#486 - Katie Asmuth: Staying Connected to Running While Injured and Learning from that Experience

One of my favorite pro runners is on the pod and I am PSYCHED! Katie Asmuth is one of the best trail and ultra runners in the country, a nurse practitioner, mother of two, and podcaster for Freetrail. I was extremely excited to talk to Katie about how she has dealt with her 2022 injury, a broken foot, as a very competitive person and professional athlete. This is a topic that affects so many runners, no matter their ability. Injury will impact every runner if we run long enough. The time away from the sport can be a challenge physically but it can be just as challenging mentally and emotionally. #483 - My Wild Experience with the Central Governor Theory

A week ago I ran the Ocean State Marathon and experienced something that I had only read about - the Central Governor theory. It was a wild experience and something I'll never forget. After cruising through the first 21 hilly miles, miles 22-24 were really tough. It took a great effort to keep running and not walk. Then, at mile 25, I experienced something entirely new to me. I'm well aware of the Central Governor model of performance but I had never put myself in the position test it out. At mile 25 my central governor let go and I felt like a new man. I finished the race with the fastest 10 minute segment I had put together all day All of that came after I was struggling to run at 11:00 pace. What and how did this happen?! I know experienced marathoners and ultra runners have gone through this but it was so new and just so amazing. In today's episode I talk all about this experience so that you may benefit from this in the future. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#481 - Canyon Woodward: Championship Trail & Ultra Runner and Force for Good

Today on the podcast we have one of the most fascinating people I have even spoken with - Canyon Woodward. Canyon is a championship level trail and ultra runner, political campaign manager, and climate activist. Canyon’s new short film, RURAL RUNNERS, is an intimate look into what it takes to show up, rain or shine, and how to balance running for yourself and running for your country. The film follows Maine State Senator Chloe Maxmin’s House & Senate runs, as well as Canyon’s demanding trail running career. It’s a unique pairing of affairs - a fun, relevant and inspiring story that humanizes the political process and extends beyond the dark state of party politics. It’s also about avoiding burnout - a common occurrence on the campaign trail - by prioritizing self-care, and bringing a bit of joy and purpose to everything we do. Canyon and Chloe also co-authored Dirt Road Revival, a fascinating book that details their work together and a path forward for important political work in rural communities. Here are some of Canyon's amazing recent race and FKT results: 10/01/22 - The Naturalist 30k // 2:15, 1st Overall // Franklin, NC 8/26/22 - Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc // 25:08, 48th Overall // Chamonix, France 7/14/22 - S.C.A.R. // 13:33, Unsupported and Overall FKT // Great Smokies National Park, NC 7/01/22 - Art Loeb Trail // 5:38, Unsupported and Overall FKT // Shining Rock Wilderness, NC 5/21/22 - Sun Mountain 50k // 4:04, 1st Overall // Winthrop, WA 8/8/21 - USATF 50K Trail Championship // 5:18, 5th Overall // Danbury, NH 5/14/21 - Cruel Jewel 100 (106mi, 30,000 ft of elevation gain) // 22:36, 1st Overall (Course Record) // Blairsville, GA 3/20/21 - Assault on Blackrock // 1:06:21, 1st Overall (Course Record) // Sylva, NC 1/18/20 - Tsali Frosty Foot 50k // 3:57, 1st Overall // Almond, NC 10/5/19 - The Naturalist 50k // 5:02, 1st Overall // Franklin, NC 4/20/19 - Hellbender 100 Miler (24,000+ ft of elevation gain) // 23:22, 3rd Overall // Asheville, NC 1/20/19 - Tsali Frosty Foot 50k // 4:10, 2nd Overall // Almond, NC You can learn more about Canyon at and watch RURAL RUNNERS at www.dirtroadorganizing.org and www.canyonwoodward.com. We all know the importance of the marathon cycle to prepare us for our 26.2 adventures. But, what if I told you that the key to improving your marathon time may not happen during your marathon cycle? But, they all one thing in common. That's exactly what this episode is all about. Have you checked out Relay yet?! #477 - Tia Stone: Dedicated Amateur Turned Elite Masters Runner

Tia Stone is the quintessential Rambling Runner guest. A dedicated amateur runner who has achieved truly amazing results while living a full and jam-packed life. That is why we are re-airing this episode from last year. This was one of the most popular episodes of 2021 and ideal for anyone about to run a marathon or trying to push through a challenge in their life Tia absolutely rocked the London Marathon yesterday after doing exactly the same at the 2021 Chicago Marathon. In Chicago she finished at the 7th masters female on a day that saw many runners melt in the final miles. Not only did Tia not melt, she sped up during the final 10k! She had this remarkable day after COVID put her low for nearly two months earlier in the year. She wasn't sure what the future held for her. It was the first spring that didn't include a marathon in over a decade. Tia rebounded slowly in the spring - then kept building little by little. Then, when autumn finally arrived she had one of the best races of her life. Follow Tia at www.instagram.com/arkansasrunnermom. Dr. Jess Mena, DPT is here for our monthly collaboration and this time we are taking a deep dive recovery technology and techniques. The importance of recovery is well-known by most runners. But, for many, their knowledge of the importance of recovery is similar to their knowledge of broccoli - they know it's important but they often decide against it. #475 - Successfully Determine Your Marathon Pace (and several things not to do)

Marathon season is here and it's exciting to see everyone finish off their marathon cycle, start their taper, and get ready for race day! But, before you head to that starting line you need to make sure you have a race plan in place. The first order of business for that plan is simple yet potentially befuddling: What is your actual marathon pace/effort? In this episode, I dive head first into these murky waters to help you answer this question for yourself. I will also touch on several pacing and racing strategies that you should avoid at all costs! Finally, a compliment to this episode can be found on Relay (www.patreon.com/relay) where I am posting a written piece comparing some of the most popular marathon pacing calculators on the internet. #473 - Richard Dizon: The Power of Community

Today on the podcast we welcome Seattle runner Richard Dizon. Richard has a wonderful story to tell about the power of community, how representation can inspire action, and making the most of opportunities. Richard began running on a whim later in his high school years. He entered a local 5k after one of his teachers told his class that she'd be running. After she blew his doors off, while pushing a stroller, Richard was entranced by the sport. Running had the added benefit of being inexpensive. His parents, who had emigrated from the Philippines, where not in a position to pay for some of the more expensive sports. As Richard's passion for running grew, as did he parent's hesitancy toward him spending too much time on sport and not enough on academics. Richard shares some humorous anecdotes on this topic that he and he parents still giggle at today. Finally, we talk about Richard's amazing running progression over the last few years. He ran his first marathon this year, the Boston Marathon, and he nailed it. He ran a nearly perfectly paced race finishing just over 3:30. Over the summer he PR'd at the mile, 5k, 10k, and recently at the half-marathon. Now, he has the Chicago Marathon on tap and he's ready to crush it! Podcast graphic photo credit to David Jaewon Oh. #471 - Maryke Louw - Efficacy & Potential of Remote Physical Therapy

In this episode of the Rambling Runner Podcast we discuss a topic we've never touched on before - the efficacy and potential of remote physical therapy. Runners of all ages and paces are familiar with the services that a physical therapist can provide. We are also familiar with the how frustrating it can be to book an appointment as many PT's already have a full calendar. For this topic there is nobody better to speak with than Maryke Louw. Maryke is originally from South Africa but spent 10 years in the UK where she gained most of my experience in sports physiotherapy. She started a specialist telehealth sports injury practice in 2014 - at that point every single person Mayke told about it in the UK thought it was crazy, because they all believed "physios have to touch people." As Maryke says, "luckily I can be selectively hard of hearing," as she stuck with it, it has now turned it into a top notch specialist telehealth sports injury service for both general injuries (https://www.sports-injury-physio.com) and a specialist service for achilles injuries (https://www.treatmyachilles.com). It's through the online clinic that Maryke first met one of the co-founders of Exakt Health - a physical therapy app for treating common running injuries. Philip had just completed his first ultramarathon and in the process ended up with a hamstring injury that he just could not get the right help for in Germany. He first had to wait for several weeks to see a doctor and then, even after seeing several doctors, could not get the correct diagnosis and effective treatment plan. That made him decide to book an online appointment with Maryke. After seeing how effectively you can diagnose and treat sports injuries online, he and Lucia, a colleague from N26 (German tech start-up they were working for at the time), decided to start Exakt Health and asked Maryke to join forces with them. #466 - Rhandi Orme: Lessons Learned from a Leadville 100 DNF

Many times on this show we detail how people achieve some greatest moments in their running career. But running isn't always roses and rainbows. Sometimes it can bring us to our knees. Rhandi Orme had been dreaming of the Leadville 100 for years. After her fifth son was born 2.5 years ago she decided it was time to make that dream a reality. As an experienced marathoner, trail and ultra runner, and coach, she knew exactly how to prepare for race day. Not only that, she attended two Leadville camps to tryout the course and helped crew her husband to a Leadville 100 finish. After two decades in the sport and a great training cycle she was ready and excited for action. For 50 miles she was rocking and rolling on the legendarily brutal course. Then everything changed. In this episode Rhandi takes us through the anatomy of a DNF and the numerous lessons learned from a day that brought her to her knees, literally and metaphorically. Rhandi is a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, certified run coach and sports nutrition specialist with 17 years of experience. A three time ultra marathon champion & Sub 24 hour 100 mile finisher. #465 - Amy Haas: On a Mission for 50 Half-Marathons in 50 States

Amy Haas's ultimate goal is to run a half marathon in each state. Amy's goal grew out of a passion for running that developed after her first half marathon. She ran that race in 2013 and ran it both with purpose and with passion… She ran that race for her cousin, Scotty, who had passed away from cancer at a young age. His sister, Melissa, and Amy ran together in support of children's cancer research. Her training for half marathon #1 was less than ideal. She had to push herself to get to “running shape” from “my life-long soccer-player-only physique.” But every time she felt like quitting, Amy brought herself back to the memories of her cousin. Since the training and completion of her first race, Amy has turned to running as a way of life, as a way to be free, to find herself, a way to push herself as far as she can go, a way to count my blessings in a world where tomorrow isn’t guaranteed and today is a precious gift. In the process of Amy improved from a 1:56 all the way down to a 1:22 half marathon! #460 - Mini-Breaks in Training: Making the Best of an Unexpected Situation

For many runners mini-breaks in training can happen at any moment. They can be caused by job requirements, injury, family situations, and illness. These mini-breaks of 2-4 weeks do not complete derail training but they can cause a runner to rethink races and short-term goals. Especially if they are training for a marathon or ultramarathon. In this episode we talk about the decision matrix that stems from these break, making the most of them, and working through them in a way that leaves us excited for the future instead of regretting things that were out of our control. 10 years ago, at the age of 30, Hebah Hefzy realized she needed to make a change. Hebah graduated from high school at 16 years old and medical school at 22. Her drive and talent were elite . Her academics and career were a priority for Hebah but her physical fitness had taken a backseat. She was alarmed when she felt out of shape climbing a flight of stairs. As a doctor, Hefzy talked to patients about the importance of exercise but she was failing to walk-the-walk. Hefzy couldn’t run a mile, but decided running was something she could fit into her schedule. At the time she was married with three children and working as a vascular neurologist in Detroit, Michigan. During her lunch breaks she would change in a Starbucks bathroom, run for 10 minutes, then go bac to work. It wasn't ideal but it was a start. In the following 10 years Hebah attacked her running goals with energy and optimism, even when some of the people closest to her insisted that she stop. Now Hebah is a six time Boston Marathon qualifier, has run 26 marathons, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, and a 100 mile race finisher. When you hear Hebah you will agree that there is nothing that this incredible woman can't do. Also, we have a new segment in the intro: Coaching Shout-out. In this episode we feature Hillary Geipel. #447 - Matt Choi: College Football to Endurance Athlete Extraordinaire

At first glance Matt Choi's evolution from college athlete to 3:05 marathoner and ultramarathoner doesn't seem remarkable. However, the more you dig into his athletic history the more remarkable it is. Matt Choi is an absolute beast and an amazingly energetic person. Matt played football at Monmouth University and worked his tail off to get to that level. As an Asian-American, Matt didn't have anybody to model his game after. He learned to set his own path and made the most of his opportunities. After college Matt was unsure what to do next but he knew that sport would play a major role. Then COVID hit. Matt made a decision that would change his life. He decided to pursue endurance events with 100% effort and document the journey. Three years later Matt has completed a 100 miler and is knocking on the door of breaking 3:00 in the marathon. All while continuing to lift hard and be a well-rounded athlete. Following him on Instagram and TikTok at mattchoi_6 is always entertaining, informative, and complete with tons of inspiration. Sponsor: As Jason Fitzgerald loves to say: Stronger runners are faster runners. Strength train explosively and you’ll soon be able to run explosively. Other than delaying fatigue or preventing injuries, the other big benefit to strength training is that you’ll be able to sprint faster at the end of a race. You don’t need hours every week. You’re not a bodybuilder and you don’t need to hit the gym 4-5 times every week. All that’s needed to dramatically improve your strength, athleticism, injury resilience, power, and speed are two 30-60 minute sessions per week (that you can do at home). That’s it. #441 - Andy Wacker: Evolution of one of the U.S.'s Top Trail Runners

Andy Wacker is on the show today and it was an honor to talk to one of America's best runners. Andy's resume speaks for itself (his 2021 accolades are listed below and they career's worth of achievements) and easily puts him in the top tier of the country’s best trail runners. Andy wasn't always the top of his class, however, He was a walk-on at University of Colorado during some of the school’s prime running years. His time in Boulder had some high points but also some struggles. During those down periods he learned to head to the trails. Those forays away from the team would lead to a paradigm shift as a runner that continues to serve him well today. 2021 was an encapsulation of that journey. Here is how Andy wrote about it in an end of the year post on his Instagram feed: "2021 has been “A JOURNEY”. If I have learned anything, it is to be grateful for the good days. Be optimistic. Positive thinking can take you so far! BELIEVE. You can and will get through even the darkest days. And after all, 2021 was another great year of running! I represented USA and placed 2nd in the XTERRA Trail World Championships. I placed third at Birkie Trail Half, Broken Arrow 26k and the Golden Gate Trail Classic. I raced some of the best downhills of my life. Ran my first cirque series race. Doubled at GoPro games and won a race at 10,000ft. I ran one of my fastest times for 15k (45:25) on a windy day. 🏃 I set 14 FKTs: Murphey Loop, Syncline Loop, North Table Mountain, Guana Loop, Marin Headlands, Ralston Creek Trail (out and back), Plymouth Mountain, Mt Audubon, Peak 1, Mount Baldy, Bergen Peak (up and down), Needles Grand Tour. I ran 28 miles in 6:00 pace at 5,500ft elevation! But, It hasn’t been all sunshine & rainbows. I also dealt with pain, injury, frustration, balancing work, race cancellations, sickness and more. I spent four months without running. I found new joy biking up mountain roads in Colorado. So, take nothing for granted. Never give up." Learn more about your ad choices. #439 - Shayla Manitowabi-Huebner: When Running is About More Than Running

Shayla Manitowabi-Huebner is on the show and she's got a great story to tell. Last month at the Boston Marathon, Shayla ran 26.2 miles in prayer. She only had eight weeks to prepare her body and spirit for this distance after she was selected to run the race to represent Native Women Running. She carried sacred medicine and prayed for healing—for all of her relations. Shayla placed cedar in my shoes and prepared asemaa (a tobacco tie) that she carried on her left shoulder. The prayer and medicine was powerful. Going into the race, she knew it was going to be a lot more than physical.
