#644 - Succeeding Through Short-Term Injuries with Bridget Chamberlin
Often times we take deep dives into runner's recovery from traumatic injuries. Those are useful and inspiring but not always relevant to most runners. In this episode, we take a look at the physical, mental, and emotional recovery from a short-term injury setback. Bridget Chamberlin returns to the podcast to talk about a three week injury setback that occurred with eight weeks left in her build to the 2024 Chicago Marathon. Bridget does a wonderful job detailing all of the feelings associated with her injury as well as the "all-in" method she used to bounce back and possibly return better than before. If you want to learn more about Bridget's tremendous progression as a runner, you can listen to her feature story in episode 573. You can also follow her at www.instagram.com/bridgetchamberlinruns. #610 - Katie Arnold: The Return of a Running and Writing Legend
Katie Arnold is back on the podcast and I couldn't be more excited!!! Katie was first on the show in 2019 when we talked about her amazing book Running Home. In this episode, Katie returns to talk about her new book that is out this week, Brief Flashings in the Phenomenal World. It’s about many things—love, friendship, running, mountains, rivers—and how to how to apply timeless Zen teachings to running/endurance. Much like Running Home, Brief Flashings is not a prescriptive, how-to book but a rather personal narrative that includes wisdom and offerings that can be applied to running and life. Katie uses anecdotes from her own experiences - suffering and recovering from a devastating wilderness accident, healing, and going on to win Leadville 100 - to illustrate your unlimited potential (and resulting happiness) when you run with the mind of Zen. This is not an overtly Zen proselytizing book. You can apply these teachings even if you’re not religious (Katie's not), no matter what your spiritual tradition or where you are in the pack. Like Running Home, it goes way beyond running. You can buy Katie's new book here: www.amazon.com/dp/1952692695?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_G3DABZR2ZPA7AG39TH16. #603 - Sabrina Little: Why Good People Make Better Runners
Can running make me a more moral person? Can striving to be a better person make me a better runner? In The Examined Run, philosopher and ultramarathon runner Sabrina Little asks whether running can be a laboratory for developing our character. She looks at the key ideas in virtue ethics--virtue, vice, exemplarism, moral emotions, and competition--and brings them into conversation with her experience in training and racing. Little pushes against the frequent conversations about ethics and sport that focus on the negative--doping and other forms of cheating or on simplistic expressions like “no pain, no gain.” Sabrina argues that these ideas don't address the rich picture of how athletics inform a good life, and sport's relationship to acts of justice or courage. A good athlete is not just one who avoids cheating--rather, they perform feats of perseverance and courage, and succeed by working to develop their natural capacities. Little employs her own experiences in training, coaching, and racing in world class ultramarathons to reveal how athletics and virtue are deeply interconnected. #602 - Kallup McCoy II: To the Edge of Death and Back
Today's podcast is with one of the most inspiring people I've even met. I first met Kallup McCoy II at the Olympic Marathon Trials in Orlando and was immediately taken by his energy and passion. Little did I know that there was much more to this man than the glowing first impressions suggested. Starting at the age of 11, Kallup began his battle with drug addiction. What started as doctor prescribed cure for his migraine escalated during his teenage years in hard drugs. As Kallup entered his 20's, deep in the throws of addiction and with two children, his life continued to unravel. He overdosed six times, was brought back from edge of death on a few of those occasions, and was incarcerated. While in prison, Kallup laid the groundwork for the man he wanted to become and the shift was dramatic. In this episode, Kallup shares his remarkable story that is one of the best turnarounds we've ever chronicled. Not only has Kallup been in recovery for the last seven years, his athletic achievements during that time boggle the mind. He is also committed to lifting up the lives of other Native Americans and members of Cherokee Nation who are battling addiction. You can follow Kallup at www.instagram.com/_recoverylion86. #601 - Sofie Schunk: Leading by Example and Racing with Type 1 Diabetes
Sofie Schunk, an athlete with type 1 diabetes, shares her journey and challenges in managing her condition while pursuing her athletic goals. She discusses the support she received at the Olympic Trials - some of the loudest on the course! In fact, while Sofie was the final finisher in Orlando, few athletes were called out by name more than Sofie. While watching the race I was amazed how many people knew exactly who she was and were touched by the example she was setting. Sofie talks about her transition from elite college soccer player, to triathlon, and finally to running and the importance of setting strategic goals. She shares her experiences with injuries and the lessons she learned from races. Sofie also highlights the role of her support team, including a nutritionist, endocrinologist, and coaches, in managing her diabetes and optimizing her performance. In this conversation, Sofie also shares her recovery and training process leading up to the California International Marathon (CIM) after the McKirdy Micro Marathon and how she overcame challenges during the race. She emphasizes the importance of resilience and pushing through failures. Finally, Sofie talks about the Diabetes Sports Project, a nonprofit organization she co-founded to support people with diabetes in sports. You can follow Sofie at www.instagram.com/runswithinsulin. #600 - Roberta Groner: Road to Redemption
At the 2020 Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta, Roberta Groner was ready. She has just had completed the best running of her life, including a marathon PR and first American at the World Championships. Gone were the days of running conservatively while hoping for a negative split. In Atlanta Roberta planned on running at the front with her peers - the other top women in the field. Roberta was eager and anxious to shoot her shot. Then she stepped off the course at mile 17. It took a year and a half for Roberta to shrug off the heaviness of that day. All the expectations. All the effort. All of the sacrifices. And for what... her first DNF? In 2022, Roberta turned it all around when she joined the Central Park Track club as an athlete and coach. From that day forward she started to recapture the spontaneous joy that can come from training, racing, and communing with running friends. Over the next two years she not only embraced the love she had for the sport, she also raced with abandon. Roberta set four American masters records (8k, 10k, 10 mile, and half-marathon) and showed herself, and everyone paying attention, that she was far from done. Roberta arrived in Orlando for the 2024 Trials with redemption on her mind and in her heart. That drive was counterbalanced with joy, love, and a calm confidence. She left Orlando with a 24th place finish and the freedom that comes when a journey of redemption ends in success.
