Ep 134A Police Ride Along

Torya is excited that The Nightly Rant Best Of episodes is being released now. Mike is more excited by the fact that they now manage to release 5 episodes a week yet again like when the show launched. Torya complains Mike had other plans during the normal podcast recording time. Mike went on a ride along with the Buena Park Police Department. Mike describes what happened during his ride along. He got to discuss the city with the officers he was with. He got to find out about police procedure. Mike says the female office he rode with was exactly like Torya. Mike discusses how the police have to manage the coverage in the city. They have multiple shifts that overlap in order to maximize coverage. Torya says she believes surrounding cities help if there are big incidents. Mike recounts how there used to be 2 officers per vehicle. Mike discusses details that relate to what he learned from the police officers during the ride along. They discuss how the chief can change the entire atmosphere of the police department. As the leader, the chief sets all the rules. Mike says that the training makes many things consistent. This leads to a discussion about training. Mike continues to talk about the fun he had with the ride along. He enjoyed the female officer because she was extremely sarcastic just like he is.

Ep 132The Fostering Theory

E

They are about to get busier than they've been. Soccer season is about to begin. This makes them extremely busy. Cross-country season has also begun. Weekends will be busy until December. Mike points out that they do things for the kids. They appreciate what is done for them. He then starts talking about a video he did for the foster, Odie. He got some nice compliments. The discussion goes to whether or not it is a good idea for a foster to visit their old owner. Mike says it might not be a good idea. He thinks of a foster home as a transitional home for the animal. The discussion evolved into one about the owner of Odie and how sad she must be. Mike gets excited about doing episodes about each individual animal in the house. Torya talks about Odie trying to steal Yogi's food. Her description is outrageously funny! Mike rants about the animals and points out their neurotic tendencies.

Ep 131Being a Foster to Dogs

This episode begins with Torya literally chilling--getting cooler because it has been super hot. Mike discusses how lucky they are to be foster parents. He says that it is perfect for them because they don't have room for more animals full-time. This leads to a discussion of the foster puppy they had, Piper. Mike compares Odie to when he got Yogi. Yogi had no transition--he was bonded to Mike immediately. Odie was bonded to Mitchell, but Mitchell had to leave. This forced Odie to make a new human selection. Torya says that Odie is getting comfortable and starting to show his less favorable habits. Mike points out he's been saying the same thing in a nicer way. Mike says he sees two ways a new dog can enter the home. (1) They fight for everything; or (2) They can be timid and slowly warm up to things. Mike prefers the second way and says this is how Odie has entered the house. Torya explains the situation with the credit card scammer. She explains the entire story. MIke takes a moment (as usual) to get political. He rants about the outlawing of plastic straws in California. He discusses ways they are learning to raise money at the grassroots level. He explains the approach. The Nightly Rant

Ep 130Drug Injection Facilities: Good or Bad?

Mike begins the episode with a rant about a proposed needle exchange program. The idea is to make sure that needles stay out of parks and schools. The user will bring in their needles and exchange them for new needles and then be given an extra 20. Torya sees nothing wrong with the needle exchange at a 1 to 1 ratio, but feels the plus 20 is extreme. She says you can go in with 1 needle and come out with 21 needles, so you have no reason to keep the other 20. They then go into a discussion of a supervised injection facility that is in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. Lethbridge has 80,000 people. They opened the supervised injection facility because there was a large increase in the number of overdoses. They had 80 customers use the place 200 times in the first week and prevented 2 overdoses. It is going so well they are considering opening a second one. While there is much opposition, can you argue with providing a place where people won't die while taking their drugs? Maybe it prevents them from doing drugs in the parks where your children play? Why not give them a place to take their drugs where they don't put anyone else at risk? Torya points out that these facilities cut down on the cost of emergency services. They don't need to call 911 because they have medical professionals on site. Somehow the discussion goes to needles poking feet and toes. Both Mike and Torya relate stories about this.

Ep 128The Scammer Process

E

Mike says sometimes you have people from your past come up and have their effect on you and then they go away. Mike says that this happened so long ago he forgot he reported this guy to the Ripoff Report. This guy had hired Torya to teach him social media. He then had Torya make him a bunch of social media posts. He would approve some and not others. He would then only pay for what he approved. He then used the others (the ones he didn't approve) on his social media. Mike had researched the guy and figured out that he is a criminal. Well, today the guy posted a rebuttal. The rebuttal was nothing but a personal attack against Torya. Torya reads the rebuttal. Mike points out there were about 22 links on the side relating to the guy. He has ripped off so many people. His approach is to not pay people and if they stand up to him, he personally attacks them. They then discuss how it is impossible to apportion blame when two people have done things that are wrong. Each of them is at fault and that's all that matters to Mike. They discuss the outrage on the Teen Mom reunion. Mike sees Kailyn as a "prim and proper college student" and Brianna as a "gangster." Torya gives her opinion of both of them. Torya says they should have a show for each person to fight. They list people they think should be on that show. They segue into a hilarious conversation about Odie being MacGyver. Torya says he is destructive. Mike insists he is MacGyver. They all say Yogi is a genius, but he can't figure these things out. Odie is MacGyver and Yogi is afraid of his own shadow.

Ep 127Privacy Cocnerns--Are They Real?

Torya says the scariest place on earth is a field of bears. Mike says it is sharks...anywhere sharks are. To some people, the scariest place on earth is the internet. They discuss how weak the passwords are that people use. This leads Mike to discuss LastPass, the software that stores your passwords and can generate strong passwords. The discussion leads to privacy concerns on the internet. That discussion leads to a discussion about legal marijuana in California.

Ep 126Washington, We Have a Problem

Apparently, it is the last official day of the 21 Day Challenge. Mike wants to know who recalls the saga of the most horrendous mail carrier on earth. Torya says she remembers. Torya recounts the story for the listeners. Mike recounts the story that occurred today wherein the mail carrier had marked the package "Customer refused delivery: did not want" and also labeled it "unable to reach the door." He was nowhere near this package when it arrived. She (the mail carrier) left it with the manager of the building. Mike is clearly angry about this situation. .Apparently, the mail carrier from hell has decided she won't deliver any packages to the third floor at all. Mike says she's one of those people who know the rules so well that she uses them to get her way on everything. Mike tells us about another mail lady years ago who was just super lazy. One of the neighbors got her in trouble. What did USPS do? They transferred her to the post office behind the counter. Mike can't understand why these mail carriers are protected the way they are. They utilize the rules against the customers so they don't have to do work. They make all mail carriers look bad when they allow this stuff to happen. What organization in the world allows this other than the USPS? Torya recounts her time working as a union employee one year and a non-union employee the next year and the pay was so different. They then discuss Torya's dad and his experience with the union. They discuss how the concept of a union is good, but the execution is bad. This leads to Mike ranting about how people want to force businesses to raise their wages. He says that should not be a thing at all. Businesses should pay what they feel the job is worth and employees will decide whether or not to work there. They then discuss Moviepass and the problems it has. They give their ideas on how they should have handled it.

Ep 125Working Together

Mike discusses the strange experiences he has had since he's known Torya. He gives a shout out to Apple for fixing his watch. He then mentions they were having a conversation on the way home and the things he went through after divorce. He talks about how certain people tried to rip him off but were not smart enough to pull it off. This leads to a discussion of being courteous to others. Mike says that if everyone did their own part, nobody would need to ever do extra. It just makes sense to be courteous to others. It creates far less drama. People need to work together. That's how progress is made in society. Mike then imagines the drama that would have ensued with their apartment building Facebook group if certain past tenants were part of the group. Mike begins a discussion of Odie, the albino Chiweenie that is their current foster dog. He says Odie wants to play with all the cats. He is determined to get Pretty Girl to play with him, but she hisses at him. Odie is afraid of Pretty Girl. Mike says Odie is a super sweet dog. He loves everyone. He is eliminating all of his bad habits. Torya says he is more independent in a good way. Mike says he likes Odie more than he expected. Torya says she has become attached to Odie.

Ep 124Good Help is Hard to Find

Mike opens the show in a way he has done previously. People never disappoint him. He is never surprised by where things wind up going with people. They always manage to completely disappoint him. He talks about digital marketers who talk about their wonderful virtual assistants. He discusses his developer search and how hard it is to find qualified candidates. This leads to a discussion of virtual assistants and how they start out great only to suck later. Mike and Torya detail some past experiences with bad virtual assistants. They talk about how Upwork tracks the time and activity and how these freelancers beat that system. Mike then details their experience with their last virtual assistant who overreacted to a request to chat. Mike gives some advice to freelancers on how to survive these contract jobs. This guy marked a bunch of tasks done that were not done. Mike says this makes that guy a liar. Mike gives this guy some advice because this guy is running a service offering virtual assistants and web design. Some concepts discussed: Don't charge for work you haven't done Don't mark things complete until they are actually completed Communicate with your clients Mike wants to know why people do this. He brings up the mobile groomer they called who set up an appointment and then never showed, never called, just ghosted Mike. Mike says these people are just inconsiderate. Torya says these people need a better project management system.

Ep 123Indoctrination

Mike opens the show saying he wants to talk about indoctrination and Torya sounds confused. Did they not discuss this before the show? Let's find out! Mike explains that "indoctrination" has a specific meaning. He uses the education system as a means for explaining this. He talks about the television series called Waco that shows how the government spun the story to prevent backlash. People claim the government doesn't have a lot of control in our life. Mike believes the government indoctrinates people from a young age. He notes that from his first child to his last child, there are differences in how the children are taught the topic. The agenda seems to have changed. Mike uses the war on drugs as an example. They realized that they can't stop the dealers if they don't stop the users. As a means for winning the war on drugs, they taught the kids how bad drugs are as a means to indoctrinate them. They discuss what will happen to marijuana as part of this discussion. It concerns Mike because children are taught things in school that are not really true. This creates voters who vote based on what they've been taught. Mike points out a discussion he recently had wherein the gentleman claimed Mike was wrong, yet he pointed out that the government does teach you certain things. The man thinks Mike gives the government too much power, yet he knows the government will have you believe certain things. Torya says most people have no idea what they are voting for. Mike shifts to how companies indoctrinate new employees. Mike is then triggered by indoctrination and gives various examples. He points out how society sets up norms and then forces everyone to comply with those norms. These norms change depending upon the perspective of the government. When the government changes the indoctrination, society changes its viewpoint on the issue. Mike points out that society is what should control right and wrong. If society decides something is OK, it should be OK. That can't happen right now because the government has indoctrinated us to believe a certain way. Things like abortion, gay marriage, etc. are all based upon indoctrination. As the government changes the indoctrination, society begins to believe differently. Mike uses the example of their apartment building. He says that if enough people got pissed off about the way things are and went to management, management would be forced to change their approach. They discuss how society needs to adapt and change and that indoctrination keeps that from happening. Mike says that there shouldn't be laws that control social issues. Torya suggests an expiry date on laws. That way society can be forced to revisit the laws when they are set to expire.

Ep 122Reality Television

Important Show Announcement The Nightly Rant was always intended to be a 5 day per week show. When we started it we naively jumped in and began recording and releasing episodes. After more than 120 episodes, we have learned that we need to get in front of the content release schedule. As part of our new marketing plan here at Yogi's Podcast Network, we have built up some content ahead of time and will begin scheduling that with this current episode. Episodes will be released Tuesday thru Saturday. If something happens and we can't record on a certain day, we will re-release an older episode as a reminder to listeners how amazing our podcast is. Episode 122 Mike opens the show by pointing out that some people think they are funny. This leads to a discussion of whether or not Mike, himself, is funny or not. Mike says that for every 4 people you meet, 2 people will be funny and he is one of them. Mike says they spend a lot of time during the day solving problems. He says sometimes it is nice to have a television show that you don't even have to pay attention to. He says that Floribama Shore is that show for him. Mike claims every member of the cast is drama queens. They push each other's buttons. When they go out they continually start fights with everyone. It is clear that the production crew asks them to push the envelope a bit. Mike then compares Floribama Shore with The Jersey Shore. He says the last season he watched of The Jersey Shore was the best one he has seen yet. Torya says that The Jersey Shore is dumb. Mike says Torya's approach towards The Jersey Shore is just like the Trump haters. Trump could cure cancer and they would complain he put oncologists out of business. Torya doesn't understand why people like watching people with less than half a brain make idiots of themselves on television. Mike says that many people want to do stupid stuff like these people do. He says the Floribama Shore people are like matches and gasoline together. Mike reminds Torya of the message she sent him regarding the new show they are working on. He explains that the person could be a guest, but not the host. Torya then goes back to why people watch reality television. She points out that she likes 90 Day Fiance and Married at First Sight and those people are also idiots in her opinion. She can't figure out why she likes watching those shows. They then discuss how these reality stars whine so much. Mike points out the format wherein they use tell-all episodes to break up the season. Mike says that when the Teen Mom crew started talking to the producers it started to change and ruin the show. Torya then brings up a musician from Canada that she likes who has been accused of sexual abuse and he has turned himself in. This leads her to believe he did what he's accused of. Mike asks does this change anything about the music. Torya says that hearing his music upsets her. Mike says that's a perspective and she should honor her own perspective. Torya says the music has stopped making her feel happy and just reminds her of what he did. Mike says he understands. One of his favorite bands, As I Lay Dying, had a similar situation. He said after the accusations about AILD, their music had less effect on him. They talk about how people want the government to control everything. Mike points out there are two sides: (1) the government should control everything; and (2) the government should stay out of our lives. Torya points out that she finds people who tell her how to live her life offensive. Mike brings up the Brown family who had to leave Utah because of the definition of polygamy. They defined it as living together as if you are married. Mike points out that what people do with their personal lives is their business. What if the neighbors bring home a bunch of people to have sex? Does it change their lives? No!

Ep 121Breaking Bad

E

Mike begins the show by commenting on an observation he's had about new animals entering the house. He notes that at first they are shy and complacent. That all changes. Torya mentions how Odie stole a chicken bone off the table. Mike says the funny part isn't that he stole the bone, he thinks the funny part is the wrestling match. He points out that earlier when they were on their walk, Odie was ready to bark at someone and Yogi had his back. When Mike told Yogi to stop, Yogi stopped immediately. Mike points out that the dog knew he wasn't supposed to have the chicken bone because he grabbed it and tried to run elsewhere to eat it. He doesn't do that with food he knows he is allowed to eat. Torya could not pry the bone away from Odie at first. She had quite the struggle. Mike opines that Odie survived mostly on table scraps. This is why he hates breakfast (kibble). He eats at night because he is hungry. He eats dinner out of habit and desperation. Odie is very smart and learning things quickly. He also appeared on television and it will air at some point in the near future. It is on the Home & Family show from Thursday, July 26, 2018 on the Hallmark Channel. Torya says they can be found on YouTube as well. Mike begins a discussion of Breaking Bad. He is convinced that Walter White's wife, Skyler, is a mastermind. Had she been involved from the start, they would have taken over the cartel. They discuss how Walter White was able to make the purest methamphetamine ever seen. Mike observes that Walter got more and more obsessed with money. Eventually, he told his wife what was going on. She was responsible for helping them launder their money through a legit business. She made sure the business was run like any other business so there would be no suspicions. She actually hid their money in a storage unit. Torya warns they will be presenting some Breaking Bad spoilers. Mike points out that Walter cared too much about other people. It made him a less effective drug dealer. However, he was overly careful so they would not be discovered. His partner was not quite as careful. This would raise suspicions. It seems since you are dealing with drugs you probably should be extra careful. The discussion turns to reasons to be careful and how to do that. This all leads to a discussion about how being honest means you don't have to remember crazy stories later. Mike mentions that Odie is still looking for a home. Odie gets along with everyone. He loves Yogi.

Ep 120The Overweight Albino Foster Dog

Mike begins the show by talking again about their postal carrier issue. Apparently, they ran into a supervisor today who told them (threatened them) that they should let the issue go or it would get worse. Torya says the postal carrier does her thing to "fuck" with them. Mike agrees. He says that the postal carrier gets to make up any story she wants and she is protected because she is union. The supervisor made it clear he won't do a thing about this situation. People like the mail carrier make us not trust people. She has knowledge of the rules and pushes them to their limit. Torya says they will now get very familiar with Amazon Locker. Mike points out the issues they may have when using Amazon Locker. Torya says most of the issues they will experience are with packages the postal carrier would be too lazy to deliver anyway. Mike transitions to Weiner Dude who is about to go to a new home.

Ep 118Weiner Dude

Mike opens the show letting everyone know that "Weiner Dude" (aka Piper) has just a few days left until he goes to his forever home. Torya says he won't bite her anymore. They are going to miss him. Mike says he's never seen a puppy who loves all living creatures. He loves everyone. He has no bias towards any creature...he accepts everyone as they come. He thinks chewing on people makes them happy...and most times it works. As a Daschund and a puppy, he has a major advantage. People love his look and they all want to talk to him. Mike says he will definitely miss Weiner Dude. Torya says she couldn't do a show like Married At First Sight because she couldn't make a decision in just 8 weeks. Mike points out that you don't have to commit to a lifetime after 8 weeks, just another 8 weeks at a time. You have to give the other person a chance to prove they fit with you. He uses sports tryouts as an example. He points out that everyone has at least one day where things are awful and we can't judge them based upon that one day.

Mike and Torya head into the second week of the 21-Day Challenge. Torya discusses what she has learned from the challenge so far. Mike discusses how they are slowly increasing the working time on all the exercises. He relates that to increasing the weights when lifting weights. Mike relates how he hates mountain climbers. Torya is trying to cool off their bedroom. She would like to sleep in their room tonight. Mike discusses Teen Mom 2 and how dumb Javi is. Torya discusses what she's heard about the Javi situation. Torya then relates how she found Teen Mom 2. She says the past 2 seasons have been nothing but drama. Mike says the check-in shows are the main point in watching the show now. Mike points out that while he likes Teen Mom 2, he doesn't look forward to each and every episode like he does for other shows. He says he likes Girlfriend's Guide to Divorce and he likes Blue Bloods. This leads to a discussion of television shows. Mike points out how Torya barters for things. He throws it out there.

Ep 116The 21-Day Fitness Challenge

Mike and Torya entered a 21 Day fitness challenge and they've made it through 5 days as of this episode. Torya says she is super sore and Mike says he can't empathize because his body is used to exercise so he can't fathom how it feels. Mike just cannot comprehend how Torya feels because it has been a very long time since he has felt that way. This fitness challenge is good for both of them as they had promised a year ago to get healthier. This makes it a kickstart for that to happen, while it is a year late. Mike says that honesty is clearly the best policy. He discusses how honesty should work in life. This leads Torya to discuss the scammer she dealt with today. Mike says he can't imagine if a scammer was using his number to scam people. The calls would get crazy! Torya says that 714 area code numbers are used by lots of scammers. They actually use real numbers, so you can call back, but you don't get the scammer.

Ep 115Universal Basic Income

Mike is in an extremely political mood and he lets us know that in the opening. The topic tonight is Universal Basic Income. Mike explains what Universal Basic Income is all about and how it is different from minimum wage. The discussion leads to how Universal Basic Income would work. Torya points out that minimum wage would no longer be required. They begin discussing many different ways where Universal Basic Income would be a huge help to society. It would help to eliminate homelessness. It would enable everyone to survive wherever they live. Mike points out that it is a welfare system individualized to each person. Universal Basic Income is something that would help control welfare abuses. Each person would have their own account. That would mean nobody could claim their dog as a dependent. Torya uses Canadian healthcare as an example of how Universal Basic Income could be handled state by state here in the United States. Mike gives examples of how people cheat the welfare system. By tying it to the individual it would combat that completely. Torya discusses how the government typically handles broken systems. They don't fix what is broken, they band-aid it. She says they should throw it out and start over if it is broken. Mike links that to lazy programmers who throw out working code and rewrite it to add new features. Torya gives an example to support her idea--a vehicle that is in a fire. It can't be fixed. Mike presses her for a government program that is broken and should be thrown away and redone. Torya lists welfare and Medicare as systems that need to be fixed. She then brings up gun laws and drug laws. Mike wonders how people get away with welfare fraud these days because everything is computerized. He reinforces that Universal Basic Income would fix the issue permanently. Housing costs would be reduced because even landlords would have a Universal Basic Income. He explains his idea to transition people from supportive help on the public dime to supportive help in the private sector.

Ep 114Goodwill Does Not Extend to the Community

Mike opens the show saying people continue to do exactly what is expected. They go on social media and moan and groan about issues that they make it sound like they are the end of the world. They rile people up and get them to promise they will come to the City Council meeting to talk about it. Of course, nobody shows up. Torya explains this is about the Goodwill moving to a corner business on the main intersection. People are afraid of the homeless coming out in droves. She says there is no excuse for not knowing the meeting was happening since it was on the social media account for the city for weeks and weeks. Mike then discusses people who drop off animals in secluded places. Torya explains they are fostering a Daschund puppy for 2 weeks. His name is Piper. Mike points out how nice the rescue people are and how genuine their care for these animals is. Mike explains they found this rescue when they needed senior dogs fostered. He says he and Torya have a connection to older

Ep 113The 4th of July Complainers

The show opens with Mike and Torya discussing the 4th of July activities they participated in. Mike wants to discuss those people who complain about fireworks on the 4th of July. He makes a point of clarifying that he doesn't mean people who complain prior to or after the 4th of July. He says that Yogi gets scared, but he is fine dealing with that for the single day of the year. He doesn't feel he should have to deal with it before and after the 4th of July. Mike points out that the illegal fireworks are the main issue because they sound like mortar shells going off. Contrast that with safe and sane fireworks and there is so much less noise. Mike feels the police need to make a stronger effort to catch those who are using illegal fireworks. Torya points out that there were many places she could see them doing it from the main street. Mike suggests the police focus on an area of the city each year and enforces the laws around illegal fireworks. He points out that some people have a line they won't cross when it comes to lawbreaking. This goes a long way towards eliminating the problem. Mike talks about his 30 Videos in 30 Days YouTube challenge. He asks that you subscribe at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCE41TmBkF0sXlJMBIHcPGPw. Regarding the 4th of July, Torya agrees with Mike that people should find a way to deal with it for that one day per year.

Ep 112DUI Checkpoint Debate

The show opens with Mike explaining that Torya says things that really make him think. She wants to know what she said this time. He then discusses the unreasonable search and seizures and DUI checkpoints. He compares what she said about Canada and how it is handled here. He says he has learned to listen to her, identify what he doesn't understand and then discuss it. Torya says she doesn't think it is right to force the police to publish their DUI checkpoints. Mike says he can't remember the reason why (NOTE: It is because a DUI checkpoint can create an illegal detention). Mike explains that checkpoints are very invasive here versus Canada. Torya says she still thinks it is stupid. Mike explains they need cause to stop you. She asks when can you be pulled over. Mike lists a bunch of reasons and explains why those reasons exist in the first place. Torya argues that publicizing a DUI checkpoint renders it useless. She thinks it is ridiculous. Mike says Torya is just being emotional with her argument. He says it is as simple as this--are your rights being violated or not? He points out that saying "it is stupid" is an emotional argument. They then argue about whether or not Torya is actually listening. Mike points out that she can't repeat what he is saying to any level of reasonableness, therefore, she hasn't been listening. He asks what percentage of accuracy would be required to claim you're listening? Torya is feeling especially feisty today. They transition to a discussion of racist apartment neighbors. That leads to a discussion of the World Cup. Mike is amazed at how skilled the players are. Torya has noticed that the professionals are using the same system as Mitchell's team, but they are much more accurate with their kicks. Torya points out that she has noticed how much the youth team has improved over the past 2 years. Mike says that professionals at anything always make what they are doing look so much easier.

Ep 111Music is a Friend

Mike and Torya spent the evening talking to Ken and Nancy, two new people they met. Mike says they look like a Ken and a Nancy. It made Mike realize how important it is to make friends with like-minded people. There are people in your life who don't really know what is going on in your life. Mike says that being like-minded brings people together. This leads to Mike pointing out that music is one of those things that brings people together. Mike asked for the Top 5 Albums that still speak to you today. Torya says she can only mention artists, not albums. Mike says that music is like a friend--it makes you feel a different way each time you listen to it. Mike wonders if mood drives music or does music drive the mood? Torya says mood drives music for her. Mike says he listens to mostly playlists. He says that he starts out in one mood and the playlist will change his mood. Mike concludes that music changes the mood--it isn't something you can argue with. Mike complains that Spotify shuffle play doesn't work at all. He says it is ridiculous. Torya defends them by saying she sorted the playlist and then it worked. Mike points out that if she had to organize the playlist, shuffle play isn't working right. Torya points out that her iPod Nano had amazing shuffle features. Mike wonders why Spotify can't make their's work. Torya tells the listeners to use Spotify Family if they are paying for multiple Spotify accounts. Mike points out that music services are all about what people are the most used to.

Ep 110Marijuana is the Devil's Lettuce

E

They are back at it! Mike and Torya headed to the La Palma City Council meeting wherein they were considering an ordinance to allow marijuana businesses in the city. This is done to get ahead of the curve on this issue. They would allow marijuana cultivation, marijuana testing, marijuana processing, marijuana packaging and marijuana distribution and online sales and delivery. No dispensaries were going to be allowed. Mike says what they witnessed was bat shit crazy. The social media lead up to this meeting was intense and full of crazy negative comments. The opposition advertised for an entire week to get people to come out to this meeting. Mike had suggested a good reason to approve such an ordinance, but the opposition strictly dismissed Mike's argument with no real response at all. The City of La Palma gave an unbiased presentation. They took the time to respond to the comments from social media. They responded directly to each social media post. As usual, there were a bunch of comments, but they were all about the same exact topic. Torya points out that the crowd wasn't exactly young. She points out that they are the people who say the younger generation is messing up by not reading things. There were 2 one hour long presentations and the people made it abundantly clear that they didn't listen to the presentations at all. Everything in the presentations was said at least twice. After all that education, the people were busy speaking about things that are not going to happen as per the presentations. Mike points out that a woman stood up and complained that people from other cities would be coming to La Palma to buy marijuana despite the assurances there would be no store front sales of marijuana allowed by this new ordinance. The people contended that the city only wants to pass this ordinance so it can give city staff a giant raise. Torya points out that the City Manager and her staff are the same as any other employees at any other company. They are allowed to ask for a raise. In fact, Torya is pretty sure the raise would be the same with or without the marijuana income. One man stood up and talked about his own addiction to pain killers and how medical marijuana has helped him a great deal. Mike points out that these are the same people who call people "bully" online, but they are the true bullies. They not only make negative comments online, but they go to meetings and demand that things be done their way. One guy was demanding they move on to the public comments. The mayor put him in his place. Despite the place being packed, maybe 12 people spoke total. Torya points out that people at these meetings attempt to whisper, but they are so loud everyone can hear what they are speaking about. Mike observed that the mayor knew most of the speakers, which leads Mike to believe they are regulars. Mike says the people are crazy when they demand to vote on things like this. They voted for the City Council to represent them and then when something is controversial they want to vote on their own. It can't be both ways. Mike rants about representation and how it is supposed to work. Sometimes issues are not black and white. There can be more than one "right answer" to a problem. Just because they choose an answer you don't agree with doesn't make the answer wrong. Torya recounts an interaction online with a woman who was misleading others about the meeting. This woman expected Torya to know she was speaking from information someone else gave rather than on her firsthand knowledge. They expected Torya to know this. They took the conversation to private message. In this woman's opinion, if you don't own a home, you don't get a say. Mike points out that where you live is not relevant to the discussion. Adjacent cities are always interested in what happens in neighboring cities. There are strategies to influencing a decision in a neighboring city. Marijuana distribution and growing is one of those issues. If you are in favor of such a thing in your city, it is easier to get it passed in your city if the neighboring cities have already approved the same thing. The reaction of the neighboring cities is a barometer for potential success. Mike explains his take on home ownership vs. renting. Torya says that her interaction with the woman online was apparently quite frustrating to Torya. People are afraid of things they don't understand, so Mike says maybe they should educate themselves on the topic. He compares it to Measure A in Cypress or the legalization of marijuana where people didn't bother to educate themselves on the issues and were being lead around by their noses. They discuss people who are uninformed and vote vs. people who just don't vote. They agree both are just as bad. Mike explains why he doesn't think people should vote based upon what other people tell them. People want to yell at the food the chef screwed up rather than yell at the chef. Torya feels that if people are not making informed decisions,

Ep 109Abe Abedelhadi Speaks the Bitter Truth

Today Mike and Torya welcome a special guest, Abe Abdelhadi. He asks the questions the masses find difficult. He's been a musician, comedian and put out a novel in 2015 called All Together Now. All of these endeavors have one thing in common--the desire to tell the truth. Abe brings up Antonio Sabato, Jr. and his political career. He says that any two bit actor thinks they can run for office these days. Abe then brings up Oprah and her potential run for President of the United States. He says she was for the Iraq war so that disqualifies her in his mind. Abe brings up the Jerry Springer aspect of talk shows on television. He feels we've been dumbed down a great deal. It is all about identity politics. Abe brings up Maxine Waters and her ethics violations. Apparently Antonio Sabato, Jr. Said she should be in jail. Abe discusses the Sarah Sanders situation. He uses that to show the hypocrisy. This leads Abe to rant about both sides of the aisle and their inconsistent behavior. The discussion leads to the kneeling in the NFL issue. Abe says they keep flipping the argument. He compares it to his girlfriend catching him cheating because she went through his phone, but he turns it around and says she shouldn't be going through his phone. It is gaslighting. Mike points out that they continually fight about things because the left sees everything their way and the right sees it their way. Abe lets us know how he feels about President Obama and President Bush. He says the left has allowed Trump to steal their critical thinking skills. Abe recounts his preparation with a DNC Super Delegate. He let the person know what he wanted to talk about. Abe let her know what he thought the DNC should focus on. He points out they are losing followers because of the corporate money they continually take.

Ep 108Roller Derby!

Mike and Torya begin the show discussing their visit to the roller derby. Mike says the ticketing and the setup were done very well. He says they could have done better by taking a few minutes to explain the rules and how scoring works. Torya says that would help because it was very confusing. They discuss that it was a lot of fun, but it might be a little bit expensive. It would have been more enjoyable if they had been able to understand it. Mike suggests maybe they can help the company with its marketing. Torya offers them the ability to come on the show to help clarify. Mike said he had fun because it was something different. He had never seen anything like it before. He felt it was very interesting. Mike told Alyssa that Torya should be a roller derby woman and should be called Toryasaurus. Torya says if she was a dinosaur she'd be a black dinosaur. Once again the animals interrupt the show. Mike went into his stereotypical ideas about what these roller derby women would look like. He admitted he has no real reason to have those stereotypes. Mike then compares this to going to a concert for a band you've never listened to. The music is good, but you don't totally get it. They continued to discuss the names of the roller derby competitors. There was Slayer Moon, Mother Chucker, Doom, Slammin Da Beers, and Dr. Speed.

Ep 107Mail Carrier from Hell

The show opens with Torya describing an experience they had with their mail carrier. Torya speaks of "that person who just exists in your world" who is not the most significant person in your life and then one day they lose their shit about nothing and you realize "there has been a lunatic in my life all this time". Torya doesn't understand what happened. Mike describes the encounter. They were leaving to go get Alyssa from her dance practice. As they were leaving the building, the mail carrier was finishing up the mail delivery. Mike did what he always does--showed her the key and that he can open the mailbox. They usually say "hold on a moment" and then hand you the mail. The mail carrier from hell immediately slammed the mailbox shut and yelled "That's my mailbox!" They left with their package. When they returned there was a card in the box saying they would not be receiving any mail. Mike saw that as a problem because he isn't going to the post office to get the mail. Torya reminded Mike that the mail carrier was yelling at him as he walked away. She said she was going to talk to the building manager and that she would stop mail delivery. Mike says he understands that if someone is abusive towards you, losing your cool would be normal. This was not the case in this situation. Mike even walked away when the mail carrier from hell went full savage. This is why they had to speak to the supervisor at the post office. It became quite apparent they've had trouble with the mail carrier from hell in the past. He rolled his eyes when the mail carrier from hell was mentioned. Mike even called him when he saw the note about the mail delivery being stopped. Mike says he wants an apology from the mail carrier from hell. Torya is tired of stalkers and the mail carrier from hell. She is just done with it all. Mike does not appreciate it when someone just goes off for absolutely no reason at all. The mail carrier from hell took 0.3 seconds to go from quiet to extremely nasty. Torya opines that this mail carrier from hell must have lots of people who give her trouble for how horrible she is at her job. She suspects something else is going on there. Mike says he was surprised the mail carrier from hell would abuse her authority. All because of a question that was asked. It makes no logical sense at all. He points out that this isn't the first time he has had to contact her manager. Mike uses Khole Kardashian and an incident she had with someone she dated to show that people use their own opinions and beliefs to frame a story. Mike says he doesn't care what your beliefs are as long as you are consistent. It helps him know the boundaries. It makes life much easier when you understand the boundaries. Inconsistent behavior just causes major problems.

Ep 106Don't be so judgmental

Mike opens the show talking about their recent physicals. The two then transition into a discussion of their Cirkul water bottles. Mike explains what Cirkul is all about. Mike points out they need to be more healthy. Mike then transitions to a discussion about judgment. He says we shouldn't judge others and Torya says judging is necessary to tell who is good and who is bad. Torya says that judgment is what a judge does--deciding if you are good or bad. Mike points out that judges don't always point out good and bad, sometimes they simply apply a monetary value to the case. "The ability to make considered decisions" -- the definition of judgment Mike points out that perception changes everything. Torya says "different people judge differently" and Mike points out that is a problem. He says he doesn't agree. Torya says that is OK. Mike says he isn't allowed to disagree and points out that Torya yelled at him. Torya defends herself by saying Mike told her she was wrong. Mike points out that if he disagrees with her, then in his opinion is she is wrong. He points out that had he agreed with her, he would not say she is wrong. This upsets Torya. An argument ensues and the show ends early.

Ep 105Split Up California?

They are back after a hiatus to decompress from campaigning. Torya has a topic she wants to discuss. She wants to discuss the initiative to split California into 3 states. She points out that people will be grocery shopping in one state while living in another state or they will live in one state and work in another. Mike points out that South Bend, Indiana is on the Michigan border so people there work in Michigan and live in Indiana and vice versa. Mike's take is that it is no big deal because anyone who lives near to a border experience this same exact thing. Torya sees a problem due to the economy. Why would you want to break up a large economy and remove certain sectors from that economy? Mike says he doesn't know how this will be implemented and he hasn't really gone far with it because, to him, it is asinine. Torya feels the people who want to split up California are the very same people who want to have California secede from the United States. She feels that if it passes it will be like Brexit for Britain. The people will vote for it and immediately regret it. Torya says splitting into North and South California would make more sense. The two are quite different places. They begin discussing people who create a set of facts and then repeat them until people believe them. Mike and Torya also mention that there is a huge police presence in their building. They are busily searching an apartment in the back of the building near Mike's car. Mike feels they served a search warrant and that's why there was such a large group of officers. Torya points out that they even brought a K9 unit. Torya discusses how Pretty Girl is losing weight due to the laser pointer they bought. She plays so hard that she drops the pounds. This leads to a discussion of neighbors and how hard it is to get new neighbors. Mike says people are not as friendly at first. It takes time for them to trust you enough to speak to you.

Ep 104Liars, Liars Everywhere

Look out world! Mike is on fire tonight and ready to rant. This is a rant of epic proportions! Torya says they've encountered a lot of liars of late. Mike says that he won't address specifics, but he will be pointing out why he hates being lied about. He says he is often accused of not being able to let go of a situation. He says that it really concerned him that this latest situation with the crazy woman is something he couldn't let go. He analyzed his response and figured out that when someone accuses him of something that is so far removed from anything he would do, he feels the need to disavow himself from the situation. Torya says the more details you give a crazy person, the more lies they will come up with. Mike says being totally general is the best approach and makes it hard to make up stories. Thus, Mike has concluded that he doesn't like when someone accuses him of things that he would never do morally or ethically. He just can't seem to let that sit. They then discuss the Vegas Golden Knights and how they lost the Stanley Cup Finals in 5 games to the Washington Capitals. Mike explains that he is definitely transparent, but he keeps his circle of friends small because it causes so much less drama. They then discuss how a situation can be detailed or vague, but still be truthful and honest. Mike says that if someone accuses you of stealing money, you will vehemently defend yourself. Torya points out some past accusations and how patently false they were. Mike says this crazy person came into the discussion with their spin already painted. They then built a narrative to fit that. In other words, they defined Mike first and then crafted their argument to support the narrative they created about him. Torya describes a situation where she was called a bully and she proved she was not. Liars tend to want to keep up their lies. Torya points out that whenever they have a guest their names rhyme. They then discuss a problem they have been having with their iPhones where they cannot turn on or off caller ID. Apparently it is a system-wide problem and not isolated to their phones. The discussion leads to campaign donations and what happens with leftover money if it isn't moved to a new campaign.

Ep 103How NOT to Run a Facebook Group

The show opens and Mike and Torya discuss election day and how crazy it was for them. They introduce their guest, Gina, who is on the show to discuss how a particular admin has alienated the community with her approach to running a Facebook group for the community. People ask why there are so many community groups dedicated to Cypress, California. Gina explains that she got removed from the larger Cypress Community Group for defending someone from an attack that took place in the group. The admin didn't agree with Gina's opinion, so she kicked Gina out of the group. Gina had considered creating her own community page, but found The REAL Cypress Community Group. Mike asks if Gina had seen similar treatment to other people. Gina says it is difficult to say because the admin uses private messages to make rude comments. Gina can only go by what was said by other people. Gina did notice that any comments the admin didn't agree with would be removed. Torya points out that post approval is now turned on in that group so nobody can post without her approval. Gina says that's silly because the admin and her family go to other pages and attack people and berate them. Mike says adults should be allowed to act like adults. If people don't like what they see on social media they can keep scrolling. Anyone choosing to engage should be allowed to engage. He then comments about all the lectures he received while running for office. He says he has a right to have feelings about things and to say what he feels. Torya says that the guy trolling Mike in the Cypress Community Open Forum is not a very classy guy. Mike asks Gina what she thinks about how adults are treated on the larger community group. She says adults are treated like children. She feels as though it is kindergarten on that group. You are not allowed to have an opinion unless it coincides with the admin's opinion. If you don't agree with the admin, you get a lecture from the admin and get kicked out of the group. Mike explains how he got kicked out of the group for stating that someone who was just kicked out for not having a profile picture, actually had a profile picture. This then lead to the family of the admin making the claim he had called her Hitler. The "proof" was posted publicly and showed Mike had never said such a thing. What Mike had actually called them was "fascist dictator." 2 years later that family is still claiming they were called Hitler. Gina opines about why they never let anything go. Torya points out that she was also kicked out for saying nothing at all. Gina points out that people in multiple groups get kicked out if they talk at all about the admin. Mike points out that the admin of the Cypress Community Open Forum had booted a friend of the admin of the other group, so he has now been removed from the larger community group. Mike says this family thinks they run the city. He points out that elected officials have thanked him for being honest online. This family disputes those things and says Mike is a liar. Clearly they are out of touch with reality. Mike asks Gina how she would handle the group differently. She says that as long as there isn't profanity, people should be allowed to make comments and should be left alone. Mike points out that their group is all about real community. They believe people should be able to tell the community about poor service they have seen. Mike says you cannot have a community if you can't act as an adult. Mike makes the point that people are continually blocking those they don't agree with. He says that eventually you stop learning because you see nothing but agreeable opinions. He gives examples of people who just don't get it. Mike asks Gina her thoughts on the recently passed Measure A. Gina says she didn't know much about it, but Mike's comments helped change her to a Yes vote.

Ep 102Voting in the US and Canada

Mike and Torya discuss the differences between voting in the US and voting in Canada. Torya points out that people in jail are allowed to vote in Canada, but not here in the US. Mike suggests that one way to be able to build more prisons is to have it so all prisoners vote within the area the prison is located. This would increase the influence of that area and so people would want to have prisons in their area to get that voting power. Mike says the Canadian approach sounds like how our Congress is elected. This inspires Mike to speak about gerrymandering. Torya says they don't draw the lines like this in Canada. Torya points out that there are just 2 major parties here. This limits choices. In Canada there can be 13 or more parties to choose from when voting. It gives them more diversity and enables better representation. Torya discusses some changes that have been proposed to the Canadian election system. Mike says the changes would do away with the argument that you could waste your vote voting for a third party. This leads to another brief discussion about the extremes on either side and how that is still bad. Torya rants about the cost of her cell phone when she lived in Canada. Mike opines that the government is deciding upon a minimum number of competitors for each industry. Mike opines that you must have a minimum number of competitors for the free market to truly work. He explains why companies would buy out their competition at all costs to control the entire market. Torya says the competition is good for the consumer. She aligns this with elections and says that by having more competition it makes it easier to represent the entire population. The two party system is a big problem in the US. Mike says that people get too myopic about their voting. They pick a single issue and that's what they vote on, yet the many other issues are a bigger problem and are not considered. Torya points out that people campaign against things rather than for things. Torya says that there should be no primary election at all. There should be one election and whomever gets the most votes wins. Mike proposes that in the voter guide, the candidate should be allowed at the very least a link to a website or a Facebook page. This would solve the issue of not having enough money to put an advertisement in that book. Candidates who don't have a candidate statement tend to get hurt in the final election. This would solve it. Torya further suggests there not be a book at all, but a website that contains the information desired.

Ep 101Why is a dog's nose black?

Mike opens with a strange question. Why are dogs' noses colored? Torya claims humans have noses that are different colors from their skin. Mike completely disagrees. Torya expresses her displeasure with tank tops. Mike says they are to show off your muscles. Torya answers Mike's question by saying "maybe the skin is a different type on their nose." Mike says that the nose is in the sun the most, so it is black to avoid burning. Yogi says Mike is an idiot for thinking they are the same species (of course Mike didn't really think that). Torya tells the story of her parents' dogs that got attacked by a mountain lion and only survived by working together. She points out that Yogi would become mountain lion food. Mike explains why he is a dog person. This leads to a discussion of the personalities of the cats in the house. We learn a herd of cats is called a glaring. What an interesting word! They then discuss potential ideas for children's books. This leads to some funny discussion. They lead us into a big discussion about a giant bobcat that has been seen in the area. Mike explains how scary it would be to encounter that giant cat while on a walk. Torya explains how to survive various wild animal encounters. She says that wolves are the most dangerous because you see 1, but 3 others have surrounded you.

Ep 100The 100th Episode is Here!

The 100th episode is finally here. They've recapped their Top 5 episodes for each of them and in this episode, Mike will be interviewing Torya and Torya will be interviewing Mike. This will be a short episode. Mike asks Torya "What is your favorite part of doing this podcast?" She likes laughing, sharing their insanity with the outside world. Mike asks "What is something you've learned from doing this podcast?" Torya says she has learned that Mike is more chatty at night. Mike asks "What topics should be covered in the next 100 episodes?" Torya says perhaps adding guests to the show would be a good idea. Mike asks "What is your favorite thing to do with your spare time?" Torya says she loves sleeping. Mike points out that she actually binge watches shows and plays games on her phone. Mike announces the winner of the contest is Businessbacca. They did not provide their favorite The Nightly Rant moment. Torya asks Mike "What is your absolute favorite topic to rant about?" Mike says it is uninformed people. He says these people have become his biggest pet peeve. Torya asks Mike "What is your least favorite thing to rant about?" Mike says he doesn't have anything he doesn't like to rant about. Torya says sometimes she just isn't the mood for the topic they are discussing. Mike explains the planning that goes into the show. Torya asks what Mike thinks they can do better in the next 100 episodes. Mike says he is already working on a way to improve the sound by reducing any echo from the room. From a content perspective, Mike feels they need to be more real than they are today.

Ep 99Software Support Sucks

Mike says that software support is pretty much non-existent. Torya says that ClickUp has great customer service. Mike says it is the best he's ever seen in a software company. Torya makes the mistake of mentioning Intercom. Mike rants about the Intercom sales department. Mike and Torya discuss rebranding and reselling software and how that works. Mike mentions how licensing agreements are the best way to go. Torya talks about a device she saw on Dragon's Den where they wanted to sell their product and Kevin O'Leary convinced them that a licensing deal was the way to go. Torya speaks about her Facebook frustrations. She has a client who rents out rooms and she uses Facebook for that purpose. Facebook disallowed her posts because she is "selling firearms" (though she's not). She puts in a support ticket and 3 months later her ticket has been closed 11 times and she still has not received any support. She then talks about how she tried to get Mike's Facebook candidate page to say what office he is running for. She put in a request in September 2017. She did it again in March of 2018 because Mike was now on the ballot and a month later it got closed with no action. A month later she began getting emails telling her what changes were needed, but one change at a time. She updated the things they requested. Still no love from Facebook. Mike says it bothers him when Facebook changes something and people complain about the changes. He says it is a free service, so stop complaining. However, if it was a service he paid for he feels you should be able to complain. He then says that the advertising is their model. They get businesses to spend money on advertisements. At that point, the service is no longer free and Mike feels they should be getting support. Mike says that once you give money you should expect good service. Mike complains about people who lie to get what they want. Torya says she is disgusted by people who lie to the people who trust them to get their own way. Mike says this is why people need to make up their mind about their vote on their own. If you simply listen to other people, you are giving that person an extra vote. You begin giving that person more and more power. In this case they are trying to stop the rezoning of Los Alamitos Race Track by lying. The proponent of the measure challenged the liar to show him a developer willing to pay $5 million an acre because the city has had land in that same spot since they can't get even $1 million per acre. Mike talks about the owner's goodwill gesture of donating an 8.8 acre park for free and will be paying for the maintenance of that park for 10 years. Mike refers to the wife of one of the key opposition people who misquoted the measure. It took him 30 seconds to point to the facts that show she was wrong. Mike implores everyone to check things out to find out if they are true or not. He says not to believe everything people say. Torya points to an article about Dana Rohrbacher. She said the headline didn't match the facts. Torya says that if your message is true you shouldn't need to lie to spread it.

Ep 98Why can't you decide anything?

Uh oh! The show starts with an angry sounding Mike and Torya arguing about a soundcheck. They argue about the fact that Mike has not been in the habit of saying there is a problem when there is not, yet Torya still has to push back against what Mike said. Mike seems to feel she does it on purpose and it annoys him. Mike say she wants to talk about people who it seems cannot make any decisions without help from other people. Mike makes it clear that he is talking about people who can't make any decision at all without the help of others. He isn't referring to people who don't want to pick where to eat or things of that nature. Mike brings up the Pope of All Websites again in this context because he says that guy can't make decisions on his own. He asks an expert for advice. After getting the answer he takes advantage by asking the expert to handle the problem. Torya feels people do this because they've been conditioned through their lifetime. Mike says he feels some of them are scamming people to get free work done for them. Mike says that having a process will save the day. He uses the example of Hamilton, a contractor, who eventually tried to hijack some projects, but because there was a process, Mike was able to eliminate the threat. He changes their password and their role so they cannot ever reset their own password and then cause havoc. The Number 2 Favorite Episode of The Nightly Rant Mike likes TNR76: I don't know, you pick. In this episode they discussed finding places to eat and how Mike cycles through locations. He likes that episode because of the open and honest discussion. He then points out that with their friend Debra, they seem to instinctively know the place they want to go. They never say it to each other, they just know. Torya says she likes TNR47: Money, Money, Money! She says it is self-explanatory why it is her #2 episode. Mike says this episode is also #2 on the statistics for The Nightly Rant. Mike discusses the results of his carnivore diet experiment and how successful it has been. He lost over 30 pounds, fits better in clothing and feels better overall. He is now going to change to 5 days a week of meat and carbs and then loosening up on the weekends. Mike points to his avoiding soda as a big reason he feels better.

Ep 97We want a regional park!

Mike opens the show sounding frustrated. They just returned from a community meeting regarding Measure A and the race track property. Torya says people were so dumb that she doesn't think she has any brain cells left. Mike says most of the people were respectful, but many of them were not at all polite. He mentions the development committee chairman from the other city who is busily approving extremely high density housing in his city, but feels he should come lecture their city about what they should or should not develop. Torya mentions how she told the guy to be quiet when he was sassing the speaker. Mike points out that the guy was thinking about saying something back, but he thought better of it. Torya noticed he was outside with his posse when they were leaving and she made another sassy comment. He didn't reply at all. Torya claims these people don't want more people in their city because people who are not retirement age would be able to make decisions for the city and they won't get their way and she doesn't think they can handle not getting their way. Mike agrees and even applies it further to their school district. They don't want people shaping the path of their school district. Torya believes people from other cities should not have a say in the matters that affect other cities. Mike says that if the ability to speak out exists, people should exercise that right. He says that prioritizing speaking time by those who are citizens of that city first and all others later makes sense to him. Torya agrees that those people who live in a city should have top priority at all council meetings. Others should not have the same priority as the citizens of the city do. Torya feels like the comments people make at these meetings are just repetitive. Mike interjects by saying he saw a Gavin Newsom commercial. He describes the commercial. He says Newsom is gesturing like he is God. Mike does see his charisma, but he doesn't care for Newsom at all, especially his political positions. Torya points out that the presenter and a guy at the back of the room used to be on the same side of the issue. The obnoxious guy has lame arguments that somehow people listen to. Mike points out that the presenter held his ground the last time a measure was on the ballot because he didn't think it was good for the city. Now, with some slight changes, he supports the measure because he feels the changes made are extremely positive. Torya remembers him saying the last measure was 80% good. Mike points out that this guy thinks he owns a share of the race track land because he is a tax payer. He claims it is equity owed to the public, yet this is private property. Torya supports the idea that the land is private property. The Number 3 Episode of The Nightly Rant Torya's number 3 favorite episode of The Nightly Rant is TNR54-Tide Pods are Yummy. She says she loves this one because it was iconic. She started asking people to send her rude emails and she will send them a tide pod sticker. Mike's number 3 favorite episode of The Nightly Rant is TNR73-The Return of the Pope of All Websites. He says it is his favorite because the Pope tried to be stealthy and smart, but was neither stealthy or smart. Torya guarantees that there will be more drama with the Pope of All Websites. Mike agrees. He says he sent the Pope all his files and the Pope doesn't seem to know what to do with those. Torya points out that as someone who knows nothing about websites that she could restore the sites using a Google search. Mike completely agrees. Mike once again describes how all the drama began.

Ep 96Happy Birthday, Debra!

Today was a special celebration of our friend Debra's birthday. We took her to Gen Korean BBQ. The food was amazing and tasty. We then took her to Kups for dessert. She loved it last year, so this year we figured a repeat was in order. Everyone seemed to enjoy the evening. Mike and Torya go on to describe what a busy day they had today. Torya complained her breakfast was a little disgusting because it was flavorless. She then describes a trip to the soccer store to pick up the uniforms ordered by the team. It was a busy day for them. When they have a busy day they have to pull together for the ability to get everything done that needs to be done. The Number 4 Episode of The Nightly Rant Torya says TNR66: Pizza From The Nightly Rant Perspective is her Number 4 favorite episode of The Nightly Rant. Mike's Number 4 favorite is TNR79: A Zoo Update. He says it was an amazing episode because it made him get even closer to the three cats. He seemed to develop a better connection with the cats by observing them for the show. Mike says he likes podcasting because it makes him think. He learns things from doing podcasts. It stretches the brain. They describe how the show works. They plan a brief topic prior to the show. They use that to launch the discussion and then follow that discussion wherever it takes them.

Ep 95Scammers, the uninformed and Our Number 5 Favorite Episode

Mike opens the show by saying this one is a special episode. Because it is the 95th episode, Mike decided that at the end of the show they will discuss their 5th favorite episode. Each of them will give a brief rant about their 5th favorite episode. Torya and Mike then have a good time teasing each other about the topic today. They promote the 100th episode contest. Just say hello to Parker the Cat in an email and tell them your favorite The Nightly Rant moment that is 2 minutes of less in length. Mike says that the thing bothering Torya also bothers him, but from a different perspective. Torya explains she gets irritated when someone lies to her. She's been looking for a virtual assistant based in the USA to off load some tasks to them. She then posted on Upwork and invited every single freelancer in the US and Canada in the correct price range. Mike says he is proud of Torya for admitting her mistake. People begin to respond and she begins to notice some red flags. One guy makes $8 an hour and lives in Downtown Los Angeles and his grammar was atrocious. How did she determine if this guy was legit or not? She created a bit.ly link to the website for The Web Scientists. When the guy clicked the link, it shows her that he is actually from Nigeria. When Torya accused him of being from Nigeria he never answered her again. She then had someone who said they were from Northern Ontario and they were really from Bangladesh. One got crazy and began begging for work. Torya explains that she has some very specific tasks that require a US IP address and smaller, cheaper VPNs don't work. Torya explained to the guy that she couldn't work with him because he'd lie. Mike then talks about how AI has improved tremendously. This has given rise to bots that can easily fool you into thinking they are real. He says that when you ask certain questions the bot gets tripped up. Torya gives a tip--if you want to find out if they are bots or not, ask two questions at the same exact time. A bot will only answer one of the questions because they are programmed to look for and answer questions. She discusses other interesting ways to defeat a bot. Mike then says that people have a signature way of speaking. Torya says Mike's weird online quirk is capitalizing words to give them emphasis. She says it is a weird quirk. Mike says he tries not to do it. This leads to a discussion about Facebook allowing bold and italics in their comments. Mike points out that Facebook has a rich text editor, yet those basic features are missing. Torya says that Facebook also needs to have private support. She wants to be able to ask questions without the entire world seeing them. Mike says they could keep it private and still use your post without your name to provide a knowledge base to other customers. Mike says he believes they keep it public because it brings other people to the forums so they can grab their data as well as registered users data. Mike transitions to the trolls of the internet and how annoying they are. He says so many people just don't know what they are talking about and then become a troll by claiming they've answered the questions when they actually avoided the question. The Number 5 Episode of The Nightly Rant MIke's favorite episode is TNR80: The Circus Wants a Wall Built. He loves that it includes their favorite cast of characters. Torya's favorite episode is TNR64: Not Everyone Wants to Live in a Parking Lot. She remembers someone declining an AirBNB offer and later claiming the "house" is just a parking lot. Mike teases Torya about her comment and she defends it by saying "there is no such thing as consensus when it comes to people." Mike opines that people come at things from a selfish angle most of the time. Mike again mentions that he doesn't like trolls. He says he used to get angry at the trolls, but now he simply ignores them. If he doesn't ignore them he posts a GIF and says they can never figure out what he means by the GIF. The rules for entering the 100th episode contest are changed slightly. Now you can enter by saying hello to anyone in The Zoo, but you must have the name right. It is OK to misspell the name.

Ep 94Get Over Your Obsession Already!

Mike and Torya agree that people never fail to disappoint. Mike says that people do change, but some people just choose to wallow in their same situation and attempt to make other people miserable. Mike also rants about the fact that people seem to think someone running for office owe the public answers on general things. Obsessed People Mike finds it both sad and funny that people waste their time trolling his campaign posts. His view is that these obsessed people will lie, make up stories and say whatever they want because they think they are important because they run a group on Facebook with close to 7,000 members. Mike discusses the fact that this group they run is very focused on what will get people removed. There are 5 different times the rules speak of getting banned. It is even in the very first sentence written by the obsessed people. Mike then discusses how following your own rules is important. Anything less is hypocritical and apparently the obsessed people are hypocritical. What frustrates him more is people commenting things like "How does a guy running for office have time for posting on Facebook?" Why is that anyone's business? Mike then opines that these trolls are just snakes who take advantage of the rules in a group. Mike points out that the obsessed people will kick people from their group when the person says something in another group they don't like. It is crazy! Mike says this is stupidity. Torya then brings up the drama queens that announce they are leaving a group. They act like people care they are leaving. Not one person cares. As usual, Mike begins to analyze the craziness of the issue. He says it is amazing that the people who act like drama queens and announce they are leaving a group are usually people who rarely participate in the group. He finds it amazing that something really stupid riles up people enough to make them leave. Mike says that some people react to things as though they are totally obsessed with an issue and get hurt by anything said about the issue. Mike cannot understand why people block those they disagree with. He says it is dangerous because it leaves people with crazy ideas unchecked. Mike tells us that the naysayers don't bother him because for every naysayer there are many more who are supporters. Supporters tend to be silent. They tend to agree in silence. Usually only naysayers speak out. This makes Mike point out how you have to focus on positive things. He feels that if he doesn't give compliments when deserved, people will not feel as motivated. This leads Mike to discuss the Love Dare book. Mike tells a story about a job he completed and it was literally perfect, yet zero compliments.

Ep 93The Lunatics are Surrounding Us!

Torya states that it seems like forever since an episode of The Nightly Rant was recorded. Mike points out that the last one was last week when he was in Austin, Texas. It has been a hectic few days, but they are back at it. People on Facebook Mike brings up people on Facebook who simply put words in people's mouths and then attempt to defeat the words they put in people's mouths. They try to tell you what you think. As an example he says "No, that has shown not to be the cause of an increase in crime." They will respond "Then you believe all homeless people are angels without any issues." Once corrected, the people continue to pivot off their original statement. Mike says that he gets angry when people do this and ignore his corrections. He doesn't like being ignored. He points out that it doesn't work to further the conversation. He says it is a lot like talking to kids. As usual,, Pretty Girl interrupts the show to get attention. People on the Radio Torya brings up the fact that people on the radio annoyed her. She mentions Debra Mark who was on the John and Ken show substituting for John. This woman saw a post on Facebook from a friend who is very proud of her teenage daughter for hunting a large animal. This woman, Debra Mark, mentioned she was actually thinking of unfriending this person. Mike points out that after 5 days back home, Yogi is still attached to his hip. It appears Yogi is making sure Mike doesn't leave again. Torya brings up the California candidate for US Senate who mentioned in his robocall that he was going to eliminate traitorous Jews. They both want to know what is wrong with the guy. Mike points out that the media is most definitely making sure this guy isn't elected by playing snippets of his robocall.

Ep 92You Never Know What You Will Get

Mike begins the show discussing the Uber rides he has had while in Austin. He describes being picked up by a Toyota Tundra pickup truck. Hilarity ensues as his partner makes the comment "It really is true that everything is bigger in Texas." The problem is the drive was extremely tall and close to 400 lbs. Mike describes being in an Uber pool ride where they picked up a couple. The lady portion of the couple practically sits on Mike's lap during the trip. Mike then describes his visit to Rainey Street in Austin. He then explains his return trip on Uber. When attempting to get home from the restaurant they entered an Uber that contained a pair of women from Wisconsin. The women invited Mike and his partner to go bar hopping with them. They, of course, declined the invite. Once those women left, the drive picked up another pair of people. These were cross-dressers! Mike explains that the final Uber driver of the day was extremely helpful and nice. He was like a tour guide. Mike observed that in Texas many of the ride share people do not have stickers on their car indicating they are from Uber or Lyft. Torya is in a fantastic mood (can you sense the sarcasm?). She says her day was boring and full of the same old stuff. Mike describes almost losing an important password. Mike tells Torya about all the dogs that he saw in downtown Austin. Torya describes her play session with Yogi. Apparently she managed to keep him entertained. Mike describes being awakened at 2 am by a phone call from a support center. Mike discusses his interview with the Orange County Register. He is excited about that.

Ep 91Is There Really Nothing Free in Life?

Mike asks if the saying "Nothing in life is free" is really true. Torya says she agrees with the comment. Mike uses the example that there are Buy 1, Get 1 free offers. He says he got something for free. He emphasizes that the saying says "nothing" is free. Torya says the saying is implying that you have to buy something to get something. Mike points to his free car wash and points out that it was truly free. Thus, he concludes the saying should be "Some things in life are free." He points out he didn't have to give anything in order to get the free car wash. Torya explains that she got a free bow tie for Yogi from T-Mobile. Mike discusses what he calls "The Pink Movement" with companies using pink as their main color on advertising materials. Mike describes his experience at Netsuite training. He explains part of the process he has been taught. He recounts how he and his friend were offended by some of the stances taken during the training. He explains that the training was helpful, but there was lots of wasted time. Mike explains what he learned. He says that all projects should be managed this way. Torya explains that her one client teaches a very similar process to what Mike learned in Texas. Mike describes a group think process that he uses when solving problems with a team. He also describes the amazing wealth of resources that were given to him during his training. Mike then recounts an interesting experience he had at a restaurant. He went to a place that actually hunts the meat it sells! They had Wild Boar on the menu for $84! Needless to say, he didn't eat there. Torya describes a place in Banff that has wild meat on the menu. Mike reminds listeners of the 100th episode contest.

Ep 90Austin, Texas!

Mike is in Austin, Texas while Torya is at home. This is the first time they've ever done the show from separate locations. Shout out to Ringr for their awesome technology in allowing the show to be recorded from separate places. Mike describes arriving to the airport and the people who crowded the small Long Beach Airport. He explains that he sat on the end of a row waiting for boarding time. He had to get a seat assignment, so he got up and left his stuff and got his seat assignment. He comes back and someone is sitting in his seat. Mike then describes the bottleneck trying to get on the plane because people with child seats were blocking the row as they struggled with their luggage. Torya then proceeds to discuss a woman she encountered at Alyssa's awards ceremony. Torya was sitting in the bleachers that were 50% full. A woman sat in the row in front of her and sat back, using Torya's legs as her chair back. A discussion ensues about this topic. The NHL playoffs then become the topic of discussion. Mike let's Torya know that only 3 teams have ever made it to the conference finals in their initial year of existence. He also notes that each time it has happened there has been a 50 year gap. Discussion turns to Yogi and how depressed he has been since Mike left town.

Ep 89The Hotness Scale of Opinions

Mike claims they pick topics at random. Torya says it isn't because all they have encountered is Honky McHonkerson--people who overuse their horn. Torya mentions a guy they saw in a blue car who almost T-boned another car and then honked at them for being there. Mike says it is all about entitlement. Torya makes Mike wait to rant about entitlement. She mentions people in the junior high parking lot who think honking makes you disappear. She rants about their stupidity. Mike then goes on a rant about entitlement. Rules don't apply to most people in their mind. Society has segments. There are people who believe anything anyone tells them. They base their opinion on who looks the best. Torya says to email the show and she will send you Mitchell's joke. Mike gets back to talking about people who pick their opinion on the hotness scale. He admits to losing that battle. Mike talks about people who continually tell you they are entitled to their opinion. He is confused because they make it very clear they are allowed to express their opinion, but as soon as Mike expresses his opinion he is called a troll. Mike then mentions parents who are drunk at sand soccer and yell and scream at everyone for any reason. Mike mentions how he has rethought so many things and yet still sees things mostly the same way. He mentions his former lack of empathy in the past. Mike and Torya believe people should be allowed to drink at the beach and if they drown that's their fault. They believe adults should be treated as adults. It isn't the government's job to protect you from yourself. The morality of situations like this is simple--adults should be treated as adults. Torya talks about drinking age and mentions marijuana in that same vein. Mike says he would rather his kids wait until they are full developed before smoking marijuana. Survival of the fittest--that's why adults need to be treated as adults.

Ep 88I will not pay more money!

People should be forthcoming with their strengths and weaknesses. Mike discusses a shotgun microphone he bought for use with his video camera. He was excited because it was going to improve the audio quality. His complaint: it won't work. After some research, Mike discovered the microphone needs a AA battery to work properly! They talk about why Google skills are so important. Mike was able to find the answer in minutes. They then discuss the formation of the new chapter of the Libertarian Party in Huntington Beach. The approach is so democratic and non-forceful. It is a pleasant experience for everyone. Mike doesn't understand why people don't understand certain things if the message is short. It appears they simply don't pay attention. Mike talks about how elected officials come to a decision. He says that they should be voting for what is best for their constituents and not what they personally believe. Torya points out that Yogi is fast asleep and Mike points out that Yog Dog spends a lot of time sleeping. Torya has a laughing fit.

Ep 87Dirty Clothes Really Stink!

Stating the obvious, dirty clothes are no fun! Mike discusses home dry cleaning solutions and how well they actually work. Just a little bit of product in a bag and 20 minutes in the dryer and it is clean. Shout out to Dryel! Apparently this works really well! Mike talks about Scotch Guard and how it has protected their new couch. He says that it has kept all stains off the couch. Torya mentions her turbi twist that is for her hair. Mike discusses the Keurig and how it has made making coffee so much easier. The flexi leash is another great invention. Torya says that the Roku box is something she feels makes life easier. Since they've switched to streaming services they've found the Roku even more helpful. They discuss the track meet. Alyssa got a PR in her mile. Apparently they went to a new restaurant that is like a Chinese Chipotle. You pick a base, protein and toppings along with sauces. It was very delicious. Mitchell is looking for Rit to dye his shoes. Apparently it is available at Walmart. Yogi came to the meet. He was scared of the starter's pistol sounds. He was shivering. He can't come to track meets anymore.

Ep 86The Circus Has Returned

E

The show opens with a discussion of "the gun chanter people." These were the pro-SB54 side of the discussion and they were surrounding some of the anti-SB54 side of the discussion. When the police moved in to make sure nothing happened they began to chant "Hands up! Don't shoot!" Torya feels the protestors were very off topic. One officer was so concerned something was about to happen that he had his hand on his gun. Mike, once again, praises the police for their measured response. They did a wonderful job. Torya explains she went around asking questions. She got some very nice and reasonable responses. There was one woman from Arizona who got in Torya's face for asking why so many people from Arizona were at the protest. The woman didn't care to find out Torya's position, but went off on her anyway. Torya says more people need to approach these things by first asking a simple question in a calm manner. Mike reveals podcast gold--an interview with Fake Mike Pence! Fake Mike Pence tells Mike why he comes to these protests. He explains his position on the issues and how he wants to see the issues fixed. Mike says Fake Mike Pence is very passionate about his issues. Mike reflects upon releasing his pent up anger on Facebook. He admits to being mean. However, the one time someone didn't deserve it, Mike made it a point of apologizing to that person face to face. Mike explains that he likes that people are honest with him. It gives him a feeling of trust towards those people. Torya points out that Fake Mike Pence has these arguments so much that he doesn't realize he's met Mike and Torya in the past. Mike says he sees nothing wrong with being a paid protester if you agree with the cause. Mike sees the difference between him and Fake Mike Pence as the fact that he (Mike) is willing to change his mind while Fake Mike Pence is there like it is a job. Mike points out that it is very important for the Judicial Branch of the government to be unbiased. He uses the same sex marriage decision as an example.

Ep 85Zuckerberg Testifies!

Mike and Torya talk about Mark Zuckerberg testifying in front of the US Senate. They chuckle about the stupidity of the lawmakers who asked questions that made it clear they have no clue how technology works. Mike asks Torya what is one thing that every eCommerce site has on it. He lets her know it is Google Analytics and explains that is how Google knows everything you do. It is why they have Google accounts that let you use various services. Torya points out that iPhones log into Facebook at the settings level. Mike talks about a guy he heard who used Tinder and liked every woman he saw. He got hundreds of messages by doing this. Mike rants about how many apps use the swipe technique Tinder made popular. He also complains that he was one of the first "suckers" to fall for Google's data collecting scheme. They then discuss why one worries about this and the other does not. Mike suggests they give hockey updates. Torya doesn't seem so thrilled about it. He gives Torya trouble about NOT having a favorite team. He then updates everyone on the score. Winnipeg Jets, Pittsburgh Penguins and the Vegas Golden Knights all won. Mitchell wants Mike to do a soccer update as well. Fake Mike Pence was in the Orange County Register.
