Ep 84People Can Be So Extreme
Mike opens the show discussing the Humboldt Broncos hockey team that was involved in a tragic accident that killed 15 people. People are leaving hockey sticks on their porches as a memorial to the team. This prompts Torya to mention a friend who has been sharing everything related to this tragedy. Mike realizes that whenever there is a tragedy, there is always that person, not necessarily involved, but at some point had a close friendship with someone involved, and they are always attached to these incidents. This shows that real friendship means something to people. Apparently the driver involved in the incident did absolutely nothing illegal. The thought of what he is going through is awful. He has to live with this forever. Mike says he has a hard time relating to losing someone so important in his life. It boggles his mind. Torya agrees. Mike says he always considers this when he leaves people important to him. Mike observes that people tend to pick on those in the middle for some reason. They discuss the need to experience the emotions of your situation. The Queen of the Zoo enters at the most inopportune moment. She wants attention as usual. Mike talks about compassion and how people need to think about someone's situation and don't judge them. He also says people should not compare tragedies because they just don't know the real feelings someone is experiencing.

Ep 83Trying Does Not Exist
Mike is starting the show extremely amped. He says he loves the way the show goes when he is this way. Torya asks when it was considered OK to live with a bunch of people, create a mess and then complain about ants. Who created those ants? Mike says he might want to abstain from the discussion. He says there is no degree to this. You either do or do not, you don't try. Trying doesn't exist. Mike equates this to how disgusting people can be when they are living alone. If they can't live cleanly with others, how can they live cleanly when alone? Everyone decides how much mess they can accept, but if your standard of living causes roaches or rats, that's on you. You need to fix it, not anyone else. Nobody cares as long as you fix these things yourself. This is why Mike has the theory that apartments are treated poorly. It appears that people complain just to complain. They have no good reason. The campaign sent out an email push. Torya was surprised with how many people reply with "Please remove me from your list." They discuss how people register to vote because after seeing the voter data, Torya has questions about why people are complaining. Despite opting in to the email list, people still complain and Amazon SES acts as though they are being spammed. Mike once again (as he likes to do) talks about how the free market should handle unethical businesses. Torya brings up the "sandwich wars" and how the free market handled that situation. Apparently a local sandwich shop was publishing fake Yelp reviews of local restaurants. The owner is unethical, yet they've remained in business. Apparently the free market doesn't see it the same way or they have not heard about the issue. Both Mike and Torya prefer letting people know about problems experienced with businesses. They believe that any dishonest complaint will be exposed. Complaining about a poor experience should be allowed and anyone lying should be called out. The bottomline is people should be adults and handle their own business. Torya then discusses her irritation with people who bash millenials. She doesn't like the labels. She gets offended by the labels.

Ep 82Certain Dogs Get A Bad Rap
The show opens with a discussion of dog breeds that get a bad rap. They point out that it is the owner that is the problem. Torya describes how someone in the building is encouraging his dog (a pitbull) to lunge at one of the stray cats in the building. The owner attempts to cover it up when he is seen, but it is obvious what he is doing. Mike attributes the difficulty in finding an apartment that will take dogs to people who don't teach their dogs to act properly. The owners of these dogs use their dogs to threaten other people. They let their dogs crap wherever. They then discuss how an Instragram model beat her dog and the dog went willingly with her. He is loyal no matter what. They then discuss how Yogi was obviously abused in his life prior to being with them. Torya agrees that Mike is an extremely loyal person. He will cut you off if you cross the boundaries. Torya says his boundaries are the same for everyone and Mike agrees. Mike talks about how people want to insult religious people on purpose. Mike talks about moderating Facebook groups and the best strategy for that. Mike discusses the Libertarian page he is a moderator for and how busy it is. Torya discusses the track meet. She explains that she enjoyed the track meet because of the weird things that went on there. Mitchell ran his mile in 5:42, which was a personal record.

Ep 81Can Amazon Be Beaten?
Mike talks about his free MLB Premium subscription from T-Mobile Tuesday. The app is now broken after applying the freebie. Torya discusses how she got a free magazine subscription from T-Mobile Tuesday. Mike opens up a discussion about how Trump claims Amazon is going to be paying more in postage fees. They discuss why it is probably a bad idea, but that Amazon had anticipated this move a long time ago. This is why they began their own shipping company to deliver on their own. Somehow they wind up talking about businesses failing. Mike recounts the pre-Amazon company called The Big Store. He explains they messed up by missing the cultural issues in various countries. They posted web content with colors that meant death in other countries which scared off people from shopping there. Torya states how she sees Amazon's growth as something quite natural. Both agree that Amazon bought Whole Foods to buy the distribution network. The discussion switches to whether or not Amazon could ever be beaten. The consensus is that companies can beat Amazon in certain areas, but not flat out beat them. They will have to do something special, but they can beat Amazon in specific areas. Walmart offers their savings catcher, which Mike says encourages him to shop at Walmart because he knows he will get the best price on groceries. Mike and Torya agree that increasing postage for Amazon will not hurt Amazon, but will hurt the small businesses that use Amazon as a selling platform. They then wonder why Audible isn't done like Spotify where you get everything available to you for one low price. After all, Amazon has Kindle Unlimited, which is similar to Spotify, but for books. It makes no sense that Audible is so expensive and gives you just one audio book.

Ep 80The Circus Wants a Wall Built
EWARNING: EXPLICIT LANGUAGE IS RAMPANT IN THIS EPISODE The show opens with chants of "build that wall" as heard at the Huntington Beach City Council meeting. Mike and Torya then breakdown the circus that is back in town. The last time we saw them was in Los Alamitos (Episode 74 and 75), but thi s time they are joined by a new clown. That clown's name is Dana. Mike talks about Supervisor Todd Spitzer and how his comments are leading to vigilante justice against the homeless. That's why they are not going to reveal the actual names of the circus members. At the same time, public officials can and will be named. They play the words of Congressman Dana Rohrabacher. Torya thinks it is crap that he not only went first, but got an entire extra minute to speak. Mike says they were simply trying to show him the respect his position deserves. Under Sheriff Barnes spoke after Dana. He supported the idea of opting out of the sanctuary city laws. Mike says that he is also annoyed that Dana was granted longer time than the rest of the people who spoke and that is wrong. Mission Viejo Guy is the next person they talk about. The guy allegedly rode a bike from Mission Viejo to Huntington Beach. It is a 35 minute drive with no traffic in a car and is 39 miles. Guy From the News is the next person they discuss. He goes from meeting to meeting and stirs up trouble at all the meetings he attends. He is clearly there at the behest of someone who wants to remain anonymous. Do you think he sounds a little rehearsed? Our great friend from Los Alamitos was present. She is called Smoker Lady. She is the one who argued with Mike and screamed at him at the end of the Los Alamitos City Council meeting. Torya says she is not a religious person. Her own mother asked her if she burst into flames when she entered church. She has a serious issue with the people who were giving the rabbis a hard time while they spoke. Smoker Lady brought the numbers. She probably had fake numbers, but she brought numbers nonetheless. Mike says she copped out when she said that she wasn't a math expert, easily deflecting any possibility of accepting responsibility for mistakes. Mike discusses how these people see each other as "the opposition". Mike discusses that it is more important to collaborate and not to compromise because compromise infers things were given up. Collaboration means both sides agree to the solution completely. Mike talks about how it seems people just want to win. Finally, Fake Mike Pence sat right next to Mike. They were shocked to see him. Fake Mike Pence had so much crap to say. A little old sweet grandma type told off Fake Mike Pence. To wrap it up, they discuss some positives and negatives taken away from the situation. Mike says one thing that makes the system great is that people are allowed to address their government officials. Another thing Mike sees as positive is just understanding how influential and powerful people can be if they come together around a common cause. Torya says one positive is that the people were educated on the issues. She respects people who took the time to be informed about what they were pissed off about. Mike says that a negative is that when people are empowered, the racists also become emboldened. Torya has two negatives. The first one is they let people talk who were not from Huntington Beach. She disagrees with that. She also doesn't like that people spoke over the top of those who had the floor at the time.

Ep 79A Zoo Update
Today's episode is all about The Zoo. Mike says that Olive hasn't changed much. Torya claims Olive has gotten much sweeter. Mike says Olive still hates him. Torya reminds him that Olive trusts him and Mike says that trust and hate are different. Yogi has been trained to walk off leash. He loves his freedom. Mike says that now Yogi takes advantage of no leash by sniffing certain plants forever. Yogi still has separation anxiety. He doesn't like when anyone leaves. Pretty Girl is much more friendly. She plays with Olive. They romp around like crazy. However, her latest thing is abusing Parker. Apparently, Parker went through a phase where he would start fights with the girl cats. The phase passed, but now it is flipped and Pretty Girl is harassing Parker. She will bop him in the face with all claws out. Parker has claw caps on him because he destroys the carpet and the furniture. Mike says that Parker is extremely affectionate. He just suddenly decided he likes the people of the house. Parker makes his own spot wherever anyone is sitting. He will sit on top of you if you let him. The four guinea pigs are doing great. They are getting along. There is one fish that died and was replaced with a new fish. The hermit crabs had tragic issues. 2 of them passed away. We only replaced them with 1 more and that's only because they say hermit crabs must have a partner. The outdoor contingent now only consists of Mr. Fluffy Orange. Fluffy loves Torya. He is super smart. When Mike and Torya tried to catch him to get him adopted, he got away and he is so smart that he wont' go near anyone with bags. Poor Fluffy was a house cat who escaped while his owners were moving. While the owners left a note about the cat, they've been contacted and never returned for him. Mike discusses that he has been super busy and it has changed Yogi. Yogi has become very clingy. They then discuss how Yogi has many neurotic traits. Mike asks that you subscribe to the guinea pigs' Instagram at @FourPiggersInParadise The discussion turns to the possibility of rebranding that Instagram to a Zoo themed Instragram. Torya has requested that all listeners send pictures of their zoo as well so she can see. Send them to [email protected].

Ep 78Are we about to go extinct?
This episode opens with a discussion of extremes. In fact, Mike and Torya think possibly the extinction of the human race is near. The discussion goes to a lady who called Mike an elitist classist snob. This is a woman who lives in a $10 million home with a staff. They mention that the Austin bomber has been labelled a domestic terrorist. The discussion mentions that a terrorist can only be called that if they have some kind of political motive. That's how "terrorist" is defined. Mike explains he feels there are racial extremists. Some people are just pure racists while others go to an extreme to "prove" that they are not racist. Is it racist to say "I'm not racist because I have a black friend"? Of course! There are religious extremists as well. There are people all the way on one side who think everyone should believe like them and then there are those who are on the other end who believe all religions are completely false. Mike wonders if the kids are still enjoying the tradition of going to church on Easter. There are also sexual extremists. On one side, there are those who are going crazy sexually and others who are completely celibate. There are food extremists. Mike says that extremists could fix their issue by suggesting a change rather than insisting their way is the ONLY way. Mike concludes that most extremists (regardless of their side) are the troublemakers.

Ep 65Just follow the damned rules!
It honestly drives Mike crazy when people don't follow the rules set up by society for their behavior in public places. Torya calls him "sticklery" because he is a stickler for people following the rules. Mike recounts a situation he had while taking kids to school. Torya explains that the crossing guard assaulted Mike's vehicle. Mike is angry that the crossing guard is instructing people to violate the rules set up by the school itself. Mike then explains that he decided to make up his own rules at one point and dropped Mitchell off at the curb on the street where it says not to stop, but has a walkway leading into the school. Torya takes exception to Mike saying he was simply "steamed" as she felt it was much more than that. Mike feels that people in general try to make up their own rules. It takes someone getting towed away for apartment residents to start complying with the parking rules. Mike explains to Torya why this show is called "The Nightly Rant" and explains that maybe he should go on a rant since he hasn't done so in a long time. Mike's rant includes soccer parents who pick and choose when to get their kids to practice, why the rule setter doesn't enforce the rules, people who adjust goals just because they feel like it and for no other reason, people who ignore where the school says to pick up their kids, people who smoke in the apartment hallways, people who set expectations and fail to even come close to meeting them and a few other things. It is an epic rant of epic proportions. Mike feels that people tend to treat lack of honesty on minor things as water under the bridge. He feels like most people move past lies too easily. The discussion approaches the issue of whose fault it is when a person in authority imposes an edict on the subordinate. Torya calls it manipulation and blames the person in authority for that issue. Mike agrees and says that this is why he cannot blame a certain someone about the lies they are forced to tell. Mike says he just accepts that fact and moves on. Mike says that people are taught to follow the directions of their superiors, yet when they do that society gets upset and makes that person a scapegoat. At the same time, when someone refuses to follow the superior's orders because they feel the orders are wrong, the same people get upset that the orders were not followed. It cannot be the both ways.
