A Discussion About Mindful Movement

Host and NASM Master Instructor Rick Richey is joined by a special guest Dr. Mallory Fox CPT, CES, PES, FNS, WFS. Even if we have the phones turned off, we might feel the urge to stay plugged in. Watch the video to see how we can all find some inner peace amid this stressful world we all live in. Arthritis and Osteoporosis

There are several pathologies that get in the way of living our best and most active lifestyles. Serval orthopedic issues that hinder our activities of daily living (ADLs) are arthritis and osteoporosis. There are two forms of arthritis that we discuss in the episode: rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Additionally, osteoporosis and osteopenia are discussed. What are these pathologies? How do they affect ADLs? This episode is to help NASM Certified Personal Trainers better understand these pathologies and populations, allowing for informed discussions and training applications. Ep 20Can Chickens Fly?

The human body consists of primarily two types of muscle fibers: type I and type II. Type II fibers have two subcategories: IIa and IIx. These fibers have different characteristics, capacities, and traits. Fast vs. Slow contractile speeds. Aerobic vs. anaerobic. High vs low mitochondrial density. etc. There are also color variations. With that said, the question "Can chickens fly?" may help us better remember the distinctions between the dark meat and relatively smaller muscles of the chicken legs and some other functions versus the white meat and much larger muscles of the chicken breast and how they relate back to type I and II muscle fibers in humans. Ep 19The Stabilization Endurance Training Episode

This episode discusses the Stabilization Endurance Training phase of the OPT™ Model. In this session, there is a discussion about all the components leading up to resistance training which include: flexibility (SMR and static stretching), core, balance, reactive training, and SAQ. Questions are answered like “why does NASM suggest flexibility to be done before the workout?” and “why is core done at the start instead of the end of the workout?” Then horizontal and vertical loading are discussed as we get into resistance training exercises that challenge core and/or balance. The NASM programming template that is on the downloads section of nasm.org page is used to discuss how to program a phase one program for your clients. This is an overview of the concepts and may help (aspiring) trainers better understand how to develop a base level program for clients. Important takeaways: The most unstable environment that you can safely perform an exercise while in good form is where the resistance training portion challenges the neuromuscular system. How far should someone’s ROM be? Full available pain-free range of motion without compensation. This is a good general rule – but not dogma. Sometimes limited ROM is needed for certain outcomes. Ep 19The Listener Question Episode

In this episode, Rick doesn't just focus on one topic but covers several questions that listeners have submitted over the past few months. Here are a few questions that get addressed during this episode: "Help me better understand the planes of motion?" "If a client shows knee valgus, do I have them SMR the overactive muscles before heading into the workout and before the beginning of each session?" "Do you think it is OK to have more than one niche?" "Do you guys have a podcast geared toward your other certifications yet?" "Can we get some episodes on breathing?" I hope answering multiple questions in one episode is helpful and please let us know if you have any questions you would like us to answer. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nasm-cpt/message

Ep 18Keys to a Successful Personal Training Business

Some personal trainers have an impressive list of credentials but a small client base, while others aren't as educated but are always booked. What’s the difference between them? In this episode, Rick Richey discusses how to find the balance between these two types of trainers. Ep 17The One Where We Talk HIIT and SIT

In this episode, Rick discusses the differences in Sprint Interval Training (SIT) and High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and the benefits of both including: - Time efficiency - Health and fitness benefits - Aerobic and anaerobic performance - Better fat oxidation - Lower blood pressure - Increased insulin sensitivity - Optimized hormonal responses - Weight loss - Decreased in abdominal weight - Increased EPOC That's an impressive list and by no means exhaustive. HIIT work to rest ratio is often seen as 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 Sprint interval training involves an all-out effort for shorter durations and longer rest. SIT work to rest ratio is often seen as 1:8 with some researchers indicated that rest is still too short! The following workout may be seen during SIT: •(1)30:240 (4×30 s bouts, 240 s [4 mins] recovery); •(2) 15:120 (8×15 s bouts, 120 s [2 mins] recovery); •(3) 5:40 (24×5 s bouts, 40 s recovery) (Islam et al, 2017) This episode contains quite a bit of research (thank you Dr. Brian Oddi) and shows empirically that the calories expended in HIIT and Sprint versus moderate-intensity training can provide increased weight loss from abdominal and visceral fat stores. Tune in and see what all the buzz is about with HIIT and Sprint training. Ep 16Even More Periodization and Programming

This is the final installation that overviews periodization, programming, and routines for optimizing exercise-induced outcomes and benefits. This was a high-level view of several different training programs with research discussing linear vs undulating periodization, isolated vs integrated training, and multiple different concepts of training including triphasic training, German volume training, escalated density training, split routines, and more. All provide value in their own ways and all can be added into the OPT Model to give direction to their application.
