The One with James Adcock

With a childhood love of the beautiful game and a father who officiated in the Football League, it somehow seemed inevitable that James Adcock would find his way into refereeing. And with more than 500 matches under his belt in a career that’s taken him from the amateur level to the Premier League, it’s fair to say James has now done pretty much everything when it comes to being a ref. James also happens to be gay – and has decided that now is the right time to talk publicly about his sexuality for the first time on this special episode of the podcast, which coincides with National Coming Out Day.This is a cracker of an episode that touches on all sorts of different things – how it feels to walk out in front of 40,000 fans at places like Elland Road and Old Trafford; the highs and lows of refereeing; telling his colleagues and now, the wider world, about his sexuality; how he hopes the footballing world as a whole will react to his story; whether he’s happy to be a role model to other LGBTQ+ people in the game: his love of fitness and staying healthy; starting a new business in lockdown; and so, so much more. We’re really grateful James took the time to join us for a really memorable episode, and we think you’re going to like it.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? The One with Lor Sabourin

Lor Sabourin started rock-climbing when they were just twelve years old. They had to overcome a fear of falling to really succeed in the sport - but now, they're known for conquering some of the most intimidating ascents out there. Lor happens to be transgender - and the story of their journey in the sport is the subject of a brand-new film named 'They/Them’ which was released on Thursday and is available to view online right now. So, it's the perfect time to have Lor onto the podcast - and they're an absolutely brilliant guest. We cover all sorts of things in this episode, from overcoming a fear of falling; feeling like you belong in a sport; coming to terms with your own identity; opening themselves up to be the subject of a film – it’s all in here. The One with Raven Saunders

It was hard to watch the Olympics in Tokyo and not know who Raven Saunders is. The Team USA athlete wore a collections of masks while competing that were inspired by Marvel Comics characters like the Hulk, and twerked in celebration after completing her final throw in the shotput. After clinching a silver medal, she crossed her arms in an X on the podium to represent the ‘intersection of where all people who are oppressed meet’ – and has used her platform to talk frankly about her own experiences of poor mental health, and her pride in being a black, gay woman. So, we really were spoiled for choice when it came to this conversation, which touches on all those things and so, so much more. We really think this chat will stick with you for a long time, and we’re so grateful Raven made the time for it.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? The One with Joseph Parsons

Joseph Parsons has loved sport for as long as he can remember. From the joys of non-league football to the thrill of getting along to Ashton Gate, it's always been part of the comedian's life - but like many LGBTQ+ people, he didn't always find it easy to reconcile that with his identity as a gay man. Now, Joseph is turning his experiences of being an LGBTQ+ sports fan into a brilliant new hour of stand-up that explores issues like body image, LGBTQ+ equality in sport, and coming to terms with his own sexuality. This conversation touches on all those things and so much more besides - and it's one we think you're absolutely going to love. It's a very, very funny chat - and if you've ever wondered what it's like to bomb in front of a Premier League legend, Joseph has you covered!Plus, it's our 200th episode - so we look back at some of the brilliant guests who have joined us on the show over the past three years.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @posephjarsons josephparsons.co.ukWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Alex Baker

It’s been thirty years since Stonewall FC was founded in London as an inclusive place for people who wanted to play football.Three decades on, the club has gone from strength to strength to strength – so it only made sense for us to speak with Stonewall FC’s club chair Alex Baker for a cracking episode of the podcast. Alex has an amazing footballing story to tell in his own right – as a referee, the vice-president of IGLFA (the International Gay and Lesbian Football Association) and, as of the end of July, one of the National Game Community Reps on the FA Council with responsibility for increasing diversity and inclusion in the game. This is a cracking conversation that takes in loads of different topics – from how Alex got into football (with a little Championship Manager chat!); finding Stonewall FC and the difference the club has made in his life; becoming a referee and the challenges and joys that come with that… honestly, there’s so much to enjoy in this one.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @lexanderjbaker @stonewallFC @IGLFAWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE SHOW? @jack_murley [email protected]

Sebastian Vettel is a legend of Formula 1.The four-time world champion took part in his first grand prix when he was just nineteen years old, and has topped the podium in F1 on more than fifty occasions. But recently, Vettel has made headlines due to his visibility as an LGBTQ+ ally, wearing rainbow-coloured attire at the Hungarian Grand Prix to show his support for the LGBTQ+ community in the country and around the world. The One with Cyd Zeigler

It’s no exaggeration to say Cyd Zeigler helped to change the game when it comes to telling LGBTQ+ stories in sport. As the co-founders of Outsports.com, he’s been helping to share the stories of LGBTQ+ people in sport for more than two decades – with Michael Sam, John Amaechi and Conner Mertens just a few of the big names he’s worked with. So, it only seemed right to finally have him on the show to talk about his own journey. It’s a cracking listen, touching on all aspects of Cyd’s journey – from his own personal love of sport; the founding of Outsports and its growth; when he realised it was making a difference; how the sports landscape has changed; what the future looks like for Outsports; and so, so much more. The One with Lee Mottershead

If you want to know what’s going on in horse racing, there are few better people to ask than Lee Mottershead. The Racing Post senior writer has covered all the big races during his time in the sport, and sat down for in-depth interviews with everyone from elite trainers to champion jockeys. Lee also works with both the British Horseracing Authority and the Racing with Pride network to help increase diversity and inclusion in the sport, and is a cracking guest who we’ve wanted to have on the pod for ages. This is a fascinating conversation that looks at all sorts of different things – where Lee’s passion for horse racing comes from; how he got his break in journalism and meeting his heroes; his most memorable stories; being an out gay man covering the sport; the Racing with Pride network and the work it does; and so, so much more. It’s a great episode, this – and we really think you’ll like it. The One with Mel Haslam

It was the fear of failing to pass one of the Royal Navy’s fitness tests that really got Mel Haslam into sport. She needed to meet that criteria to serve on the frontline in Afghanistan – which she ended up doing – but it also led Mel in directions she could never have dreamed of.To kick things off from a sporting point of view, there were the European and World powerlifting events that she smashed, picking up titles and setting a world record in the process.Once that was under her belt, she switched to winter sports – spending half a dozen years competing with the UK Armed Forces Skeleton Team, before switching to bobsleigh and becoming the top brakewoman in the Royal Navy. She made her international GB Bobsleigh debut in January of last year – and is an absolutely brilliant guest to have on the podcast this week. We talk about her experience in the military and her motivation to start taking fitness seriously; her powerlifting success and transitioning across to winter sports; why she’s proud to be an out woman in the Royal Navy; her goals for bobsleigh moving forward; and how she manages to switch off! This is a great conversation with a fantastic guest that we think you’re really going to enjoy. The One with Joyce Cook

By anyone’s reckoning, Joyce Cook has an extraordinary story to tell. She grew up loving football, kicking a ball around with the neighbours when she was just a child. She began a career in nursing that took her around the world, and it was only when she unexpectedly became disabled that she became an active advocate for making the beautiful game accessible to everyone. She became heavily involved with Women in Football, the FARE Network and others – and now, she champions equality as FIFA’s Chief Education and Social Responsibility Officer. So, a great guest - and plenty to get into in an absolutely fascinating conversation. We talk about Joyce’s personal story; her coming out in the workplace and the battles she had to fight there; the work she’s doing at FIFA when it comes to equality; holding the World Cup in Russia and Qatar and whether that sits well alongside FIFA’s diversity commitments; whether the rainbow is a political symbol and much, much more. It’s all in this conversation, which we think you’re really going to enjoy – and we’re grateful that Joyce took the time to join us for it. The One with Dale Scott

He’s widely recognized as one of the best umpires in baseball. With multiple World Series and All-Star Games under his belt, there’s very little Dale Scott failed to accomplish in a major league career that spanned more than three decades. And in 2014, Dale Scott did something no other umpire before him had done when he came out publicly as gay. We’ve wanted to have Dale on the podcast for a long time to talk about that and so much more, and this episode really doesn’t disappoint. There’s loads of stuff on the table here – Dale’s own journey in the sport; how he dealt with the pressure of being an elite level umpire; making it to the major leagues; concealing his sexuality, and then opening up about it; and the process of writing his book, which will be hitting stores in the not-too-distant future.Honestly, this one is a cracker – and we really think you’re going to like it!WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE SHOW? @jack_murley [email protected] PHOTO CREDIT: Dale Scott

The One with Clay Davies

It’s been just about a week since Clay Davies shared his story with the world. In a brilliant feature-length article with ‘The British Continental’ website, the elite rider from the Spirit Racing team spoke openly about his sexuality for the first time.If you haven’t read it yet, we’d really suggest you go and find the piece and give it a read. It went viral on social media and in the world of cycling – and it’s fair to say that the few days after it was published were a bit of a whirlwind for Clay. Now things have calmed down a little bit, we’re speaking to Clay about that article – and about his journey in the sport. From how he got into cycling; to how a near-death experience changed his attitude to life and convinced him to come out; to his experiences in cycling when it came to sharing his sexuality; to what he does to switch off and relax – it’s a cracking episode with a brilliant guest that we think you’re really going to like. The One on RVT Sports Day

It’s a sports day like no other, and is a vital fundraiser for one of the UK’s leading LGBTQ+ charities. And after a year off due to COVID in 2020, the RVT Sports Day returns on Monday 30th August to raise money to support the work of LGBT HERO – the UK’s national health and wellbeing charity for LGBTQ+ people, who hold the event in partnership with the Royal Vauxhall Tavern. Ian Howley is LGBT HERO’s chief executive – and the perfect person to talk to about an event that’s become iconic for many in the LGBTQ+ community. We also discuss the work being done by LGBT HERO; the importance of health and wellbeing in the LGBTQ+ community; how the pandemic has affected the work it can do; what the return of RVT Sports Day means; and loads, loads more. Some parts of the conversation are quite frank and powerful – with discussions of depression and suicide – but ultimately, the message is an uplifting one, about how the LGBTQ+ community is using sport to come together and support one another. The One on the UFC

On this day in 2013, a little bit of history was made in the UFC.Jessica Andrade squared off with Liz Carmouche in the organisation’s first-ever match between two out gay fighters – and we thought that anniversary was the perfect opportunity to hear from not one, but three LGBTQ+ competitors who have graced the Octagon.Up first, you’ll hear from Brazil’s Jessica Andrade, the former UFC Strawweight Champion and top contender in the Flyweight Division – who, speaking through an interpreter, tells us all about her experiences in the sport and why she’s proud to be a role-model. Then, we’ll take a trip back into the archives to hear from Jessica’s opponent on that day, as Liz Carmouche tells us how she got into MMA, and her own journey with her sexuality after being part of the Marine Corps during the era of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’. And any show looking at what it’s like to be an out woman in MMA has to include Molly McCann, as we revisit our chat with the pioneering English fighter and her own coming out story. The One with Laura McAllister

It’s fair to say that Laura McAllister is a Welsh sporting legend. The ex-Wales football captain played in every single one of the country’s international matches between 1994 and 2001, and is also a former chair of Sport Wales. In April, she narrowly lost her bid to win a place as UEFA’s representative for women on FIFA’s ruling council, which was the latest move from a woman who is passionate about making the beautiful game a sport where everyone feels welcome.Laura – who is also a professor of politics and sports governance – is someone we’ve wanted to have on the podcast for a little while, and this episode really doesn’t disappoint. We chat about everything from her experiences in the beautiful game; why she wants to use her platform to help make the sport more inclusive; the pride of representing your country; the people who came before her that made football more welcoming to LGBTQ+ people; and the importance of authenticity in sport and in life.We really, really enjoyed this one – and we think you will as well.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @LauraMcAllister @Cymru @FAWWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Jack Dunne

He’s 6 foot 7 inches tall, and combines his rugby career with studying theoretical physics at Trinity College, Dublin. By anyone’s reckoning, Leinster’s Jack Dunne is no ordinary rugby player.Today, he’s part of the club’s special Pride panel – alongside the likes of referee Craig Maxwell-Keys and Ireland international Lindsay Peat, as well as Richie Fagan from the Emerald Warriors inclusive rugby team and a load of other great guests. But Jack isn’t just on that panel as a representative of the club. He’s on the panel because he’s decided now is the right time to speak publicly about the fact he’s bisexual – and in the conversation you’re about to hear, which was recorded just a couple of hours before the panel took place, he’s been telling me how he came to that decision. Now, to be clear – this isn’t a ‘coming out’ story – because Jack’s sexuality is no secret at Leinster, and he’s been working with ShoutOut Ireland to deliver educational workshops to LGBTQ+ youngsters across Ireland. But this is the first time he's spoken to anyone in the media about his story, and we’re grateful he’s taken the time to join us today for it. It’s a cracking conversation about his career, the importance of visibility in sport, and of being your true self – and we really hope you like it.And once you’re done listening, make sure you visit Leinster’s YouTube and Facebook pages to see the panel in full. It’s a club with a history that dates back more than 130 years. Rainbow Blades is the club’s inclusive supporters group, and has just launched a new programme to celebrate all the ways that allies can play a role in making football everyone’s game. So, we thought that was reason enough to chat with founder James Laley and campaign lead Anna Kent about the work they’re doing, and the difference it’s making. The One with Jon Lee-Olsen

Jon Lee-Olsen has been playing ice hockey since he was a youngster.Inspired by his older brother, he took to the ice when he was around six years old – and hasn't looked back since. He turned professional, and has been living his dream as a professional player in Scandinavia for the past seven years or so.And in October 2019, he made a bit of history when he came out on live TV in Denmark. Opening up about his sexuality was a huge step for him – and he continues to use his platform to try and make sport open to everyone. The One with Andrea Dobson

The word ‘legend’ is bandied about a lot – but it’s really the only one you can use to describe Andrea Dobson. She was just sixteen years old when she made her debut for the Great Britain rugby league team.Little did anyone know at that point that Andrea would become a stalwart of the game, playing in four World Cups and captaining England at the 2017 tournament in Australia. And by the time she stepped away from the international scene, she had more England caps than anyone who had come before her. Andrea still plays in the Women's Super League for Featherstone Rovers, and has just taken up a new job as the Rugby League Development Officer for the city of Sheffield. And honestly, this is a brilliant chat with an all-round legend of the game.We talk about getting your start in the game at such a young age; balancing an international career with the trials of everyday life; some of the ignorance that was attached to being a gay woman in the sport by those on the outside of it; retirement and her plans for when that moment comes; her new role; and so, so much more. This is a cracking episode we really think you’re going to like. The One with PC Amy Tapping

PC Amy Tapping absolutely loves sport. She grew up playing hockey as a goalkeeper, and has been doing dressage with her horse since he was a youngster. But the reason Amy is on the podcast today is her role as the co-chair of the National LGBT+ Police Network – where she’s helping to make May 28th the UK’s first LGBT+ Domestic Violence Awareness Day.And given the audience we have on this show, we really wanted to give her the platform to come on and chat about an important issue that doesn’t get discussed enough. So yes, there’s plenty of chat about sport, and we find out more about Amy as a person as well – including what she made of Line of Duty! But the main part of this conversation is about highlighting the problem of domestic violence in the LGBTQ+ community, and how we can help to change it.We discuss what forms that violence can take; how you can spot it; the unique way it can impact on the LGBTQ+ community; the ways you can get help; and so much more beside. The One with Lizzie Seedhouse

Lizzie Seedhouse still remembers the day she saw an advert for her first football team. She was reading a newspaper at her grandma’s house in Sheffield – and from that moment onwards, her love of the beautiful game has been an ever-present part of her life. Lizzie played for Sheffield Wednesday Ladies, then backed herself to move to America and prove herself at a collegiate level – thanks in no small part to the film ‘Bend It Like Beckham’.Now she’s Senior Vice President at the USL (United Soccer League) – which is North America’s largest and fastest growing soccer organisation - and it’s there that Lizzie has helped the League launch its ‘Forever Proud’ Project, which focuses on making sure LGBTQ+ fans, employees and partners feel like they belong, not only in the game but in society as a whole. This is a fascinating chat with Lizzie about that initiative and so much more – her life in the States and early relationship with soccer; how sport has the ability to drive social change; why visibility is important; and what she misses about living in the UK.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? The One on the Unicorns vs Graces Match

A little later this month, two cricket teams will step out onto a pitch in the UK to play each other for the first time – and make a little bit of history. The match between Graces and Unicorns is the first time that two LGBTQ+ sides have ever had a game of cricket against each other. And that’s because, up until last year, Graces were the world’s only inclusive side – with the Unicorns only established in 2020. The game is happening on Sunday 23rd May at 1pm, 40 overs a side – and we thought that was the perfect excuse to get a roundtable together to talk all about inclusivity in men’s cricket.Up first, you’re going to hear from:Manish Modi and Leo Skyner from Graces. Lachlan Smith, the founder of Unicorns. Rob Evans, who will be umpiring the historic match. And then after that, you’ll hear from Henry Cowen, who is the Communications Manager for England’s Women’s Team – and has his own take on the importance of inclusivity in the game. It’s a bumper conversation, full of great chat for cricket fans – and we think you’ll really like it.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? The One with International Gay Rugby

It has more member clubs than some national governing bodies, and was set up to make sure people in the LGBTQ+ community were able to enjoy rugby as their authentic selves. But International Gay Rugby (IGR), like all major sporting bodies, has had its own challenges to overcome during in the pandemic – and that’s also true for chair Karl Ainscough-Gates.He became IGR chair in the summer of 2020 – and immediately had to deal with things like the postponement of the Bingham Cup, managing IGR’s relationship with World Rugby and more. So, now things have settled a little bit, we thought it was the perfect time to sit down with Karl to chat about both IGR and his love of rugby. That’s what this conversation is about – how he got into the sport; why inclusivity matters; how rugby has become more inclusive over the years; why allyship matters; what the plans are for a year of celebrations for IGR’s 20th anniversary; and whether he still enjoys the game as much as he used to!WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @IGRugby igrugby.org WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected] CREDIT: IGR (https://igrugby.org/photos)

The One with Justice Horn

Justice Horn grew up in a family where sport was second nature. His parents were involved in athletics; an uncle played in the NFL; a sister played volleyball - the list goes on and on.For Justice, it was wrestling where he found his love - first at high school, and then at collegiate level at Northern State University in South Dakota. As a black, gay man in a predominantly straight, Caucasian sport, Justice had to blaze his own trail - and that's just one of the fascinating things we chat about in today's episode. We also discuss what made Justice switch to rugby; why he's using his platform to help drive change; how the pandemic has impacted on his family; and how he switches off from sport. The One with Janelly Farias

Janelly Farias always knew she wanted to play football. And through hard work, determination and sheer grit, she made it happen – becoming an international star for Mexico, and plying her trade domestically for the likes of Houston Dash, LA Galaxy, and her current club of Club América Femenil in Mexico City. She’s also a TV analyst who worked as a commentator and pundit for the Women’s World Cup in 2019 – basically, she’s succeeded in making football her life. But getting to that stage was a long, hard slog – with financial and cultural obstacles that Janelly had to overcome. She also faced a battle in her personal life, when it came to getting the people she loved most to accept the fact she’s gay.At times, that part of Janelly’s story got pretty dark – but she came out the other side of it, and she’s now committed to using her platform to help others. And this conversation is part of that – as we chat with Janelly about her love of football; the inequality between the men and women’s game; how football can help to mould and change social attitudes for the better; playing in a pandemic; life after retirement; and so much more. The One with Ben Watkiss

In some ways, it’s no surprise at all that Ben Watkiss is doing what he does now.His father was a professional footballer, and Ben always wanted to have a career in the game – and that’s exactly what he’s ended up doing. At first, he thought it might be through refereeing – but when that didn’t quite work out, Ben turned to strength and conditioning work, which is what he does now with Burton Albion in League One.Ben’s story is more remarkable because, for a long time, he was worried his sexuality would stop him belonging in the beautiful game – and now, he speaks to shows like ours to try and dispel that narrative, and show that everyone has a right to belong in football. So, this is a cracking chat about all aspects of Ben’s personal and professional journey. From getting an introduction to the game at an early age to refereeing to finding a place in football where he fits, and why he wants more LGBTQ+ people with a passion for the sport to pursue a career in it – yeah, we really think you’ll like this episode.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @bwatkiss96 @burtonalbionfcWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected] PHOTO CREDIT: Burton Albion/ Ben Watkiss

The One with Rebecca Rowe

Today’s guest is arguably one of the most accomplished multi-sport athletes we’ve ever had on the show, and a woman who is preparing to do something truly extraordinary.Rebecca Rowe won numerous championships in surf-life saving at the start of her sporting career, where she also swam at a high-level as well. She then switched to rowing where she represented Great Britain - and after a back-injury put pay to her dreams of going to the Olympics, she took up rugby, where she played for Wales in the Six Nations and the Rugby World Cup.She did all this while working as a PE teacher before switching to become a firefighter - and it’s in that capacity that she, alongside four other female firefighters, is preparing to trek across Antarctica in November 2023. That’s 1,900 kilometres, pulling their own support sleds in temperatures as low as -50 degrees, as they look to eradicate gender stereotypes, get people talking about mental health, and break a world record in the process. We talk about all of that and so much more – and if you didn’t know Rebecca before, we hope this episode helps to change things and get her the recognition she deserves.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? https://antarcticfireangels.co.uk @antarctic_fire @bexrowerWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE SHOW? @jack_murley [email protected] CREDIT: Antarctic Fire Angels

The One with James Child

If you know rugby league, you’ll know James Child. The Super League referee has been taking charge of games at the top-level since 2010, including the 2017 Super League Grand Final. He’s also been a touch judge at the Challenge Cup Final (in fact, he was the youngest-ever touch judge to do it at the time) as well as at the World Cup Final – and to be honest, there’s not a lot in the sport that the Yorkshireman hasn’t done! This is a conversation about all of that and more – how James got into refereeing; why his family thought it might be a fad; the dedication it takes; and officiating behind closed doors. We also talk about life in lockdown – and yes, this is the BBC’s LGBT Sport Podcast, and this is the first time that James has spoken publicly about the fact he’s gay.To be clear, it’s not a coming out story – as his family, his friends and his colleagues have known James is gay for ages. But it is the first time he’s chosen to talk about his sexuality – and his is, arguably, the most high-profile man in rugby league to talk about the fact he’s gay.So, we’re grateful he’s taken the decision to do that with us – and as the chat goes along, you will hear more about why now was the right time for him to do that; why this was the right show for him to do it on; and the difference he thinks it might make. It’s a top conversation with a great guy – and we really think you’ll enjoy it.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? One of our guests for that show was Lord Robert Hayward – one of the founding members of the Kings Cross Steelers. For that episode, we mostly spoke about HIV in sport – but there was so much more to the chat that didn’t really fit for the theme of that show. So, we thought we’d put out a bonus episode of the podcast that’s focused entirely on Robert and his story. From the founding of the Steelers; the joys of competing at a Bingham Cup; how rugby has become more inclusive and what that’s meant, both to society and to Robert personally - it’s a conversation with a man who is committed to making rugby a sport for absolutely everyone. The One on HIV in Sport

“The conversation around living with HIV must be had”.Those are the words of Wales rugby legend Gareth Thomas, who is one of three top guests joining us for this episode of the podcast, looking at how sport can help to play a role in busting the myths and misconceptions that still exist around living with the virus. And if Gareth says this conversation is important, then it’s absolutely something we’re going to do on this show. The episode also features Matthew Hodson from NAM Aidsmap, and Lord Robert Hayward (one of the founding members of the Kings Cross Steelers) – who both share their thoughts on how HIV, sport and society have interacted over the years. From the huge advancements in treatment to why athletes have a role to play in breaking the stigma that still exists around HIV, this is a conversation that’s been inspired by ‘It’s A Sin’ – and hopefully explains why living with HIV in 2021 is nothing like it was in the 1980s.
