The One on 12th Man
They say that when you're passionate about something, you'll do almost anything to make it happen. And Jack Gemmell and Caitlin Black have done exactly that to raise the money they needed to make the short-film 12th Man, which looks at what it's like to come to terms with your own sexuality within the context of an uber-masculine Scottish football team.To make it happen, the pair launched their own crowd-funder and took on an extraordinary physical challenge that took them into the heart of Scottish football - and both Jack and Caitlin are on the podcast today to talk about how it all came together. It's a cracking chat, this - looking at the origins of the film, how they made it happen, what it felt like to see filming begin, the support they had from the Scottish football scene and why they want 12th Man to be more than just a film. We really like it, and we think you will as well.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? @12thManLGBT WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE SHOW? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Emily Rudge
She's been part of the England rugby keague set up for more than a decade - the captain of the national side and part of the World Cup squad on three separate occasions. And when Emily Rudge isn't representing her country on the grandest stage of them all, she's playing for St Helen's in the domestic league, and teaching PE at her local school. We *think* it's the first time that we've had an England captain on the BBC's LGBT Sport Podcast - and Emily is an absolute cracker of the guest who really doesn't disappoint. There's so much to enjoy in this podcast - from inclusivity in rugby league, to the importance of getting kids into PE at a young age, to the huge role her Dad played in getting Emily into rugby league and helping her succeed in the sport. We really loved having Emily on and we think you’ll love this episode as well - so listen, share and enjoy! The One with Chris Mosier
It’s a landmark episode of the BBC’s LGBT Sport Podcast – as we reach 100 episodes. For a big show, you need a big guest - and that’s exactly what we’ve got with Chris Mosier. He’s someone who is used to accomplishing firsts. A Hall of Fame triathlete, Chris is also an All-American duathlete who made history as the first transgender man to represent the United States in international competition. And then, earlier this year, he made history again – when he became the first trans-man to compete in a US Olympic Trial, when he entered the race-walking event.Chris is also the first trans-man to feature in a Nike commercial and the first trans-athlete to appear in ESPN’s Body Issue – and we’re over the moon that he’s joined us to talk about all of that and more on our 100th episode. Revisited: The One on Pro Wrestling
If you’re a wrestling fan, you’ll know that this week tends to be the most exciting one of the whole calendar – where established behemoths like WWE and smaller, independent companies alike schedule some of their most important shows. And while coronavirus means this year has been different to many others that came before it, we thought we’d embrace pro-wrestling at one of its peak times by having a look back at four guests from this unique blend of sport and entertainment who have joined us on the BBC’s LGBT Sport Podcast over the years. So, over the course of this ‘Revisited’ episode, you’ll hear from:- Mike Parrow – one half of the ‘The End’ tag-team and a stalwart of Japanese wrestling, talking about his coming out. - Anthony Bowens – the pro-wrestler and model, talking about the match that got him into wrestling. - Fred Rosser – the wrestler formerly known as ‘Darren Young’, on coming out to Vince McMahon and making a little bit of history. - Brad Slayer – the British wrestler and the first out gay man to challenge for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. They all have fascinating stories to tell from their time in the wrestling business – and unique takes on what it’s like to be LGBTQ+ in it as well. If you're a cricket commentator, it doesn't get much better than hearing your name on the roster for the iconic Test Match Special programme. On one more occasion, that's something the brilliant Scott Read has been able to experience - including during last year's World Cup in England. So what's it like to join such an iconic show - and does the thrill ever leave you? Scott is a fantastic guest in an episode that details his journey from starting out in Burnley (including watching his hometown club's ascent to the Premier League) to sharing a commentary box with some legendary broadcasters - to why he feels sport is becoming more and more inclusive to the LGBTQ+ community.Plus, we have a bit of a natter about a proper commentary bugbear - when you know a big moment is coming up, but you have to hand over to your colleague to describe it! The One with Darryl Telles
We live in an age of Rainbow Laces and Pride games - in fact, it's fair to say that sport has never been more welcoming than it is now to the LGBTQ+ community. But it hasn't always been that way. Darryl Telles knows what it's like to live in an era where homophobic abuse was rife on the terraces - and in other parts of life as well. A Spurs fan who has followed football for decades, he tells us his story of experiencing discrimination and prejudice in the beautiful game; how it almost drove him away from sport for good; and how he and other LGBTQ+ fans helped lead the fight to reclaim their place in football. This is a powerful, often emotional story - and one that doesn't get told enough - and we really think it'll stick with you.WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE SHOW? [email protected] @jack_murley

The One with Zach Sullivan
At the end of January, Zach Sullivan put the sport of ice-hockey on the homepages of websites around the world when he came out as bisexual. His announcement coincided with the English game’s first Pride weekend – so now is Zach finding things now, now the media whirlwind has died down a bit?We met up in Manchester with Zach for a chat that we really enjoyed, and we think you will as well. There's lots on the agenda for this one, from how Zach got involved in ice hockey to the highs and lows that come with being a professional athlete; as well as how he became comfortable enough to be open and honest about his own sexuality with the wider sporting world, and whether he thinks he's brave. We're really grateful Zach took the time - especially as doing media interviews really isn't his type of thing - and we hope you enjoy his frankness as much as we did. On this wide-ranging interview, we talk about that - and so many other things, from the representation of disabled people in the media to coming out to how they switch off from the sporting world (we'll give you a clue ... it involves the X-Box!).We absolutely loved this episode and we think you will as well - in fact, it's one of our favourite ones yet!WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? The One from the National Football Museum
On Wednesday, Justin Fashanu went into the National Football Museum's Hall of Fame. It's a story that has made headlines around the world - so we thought we'd do something a little bit different and take you inside the Museum for the induction itself. This episode is a bit different to our other ones - with not just one guest but lots of them, all talking about what Justin Fashanu's induction means to them. The edits are a bit rough and ready - but the stories, as always, are powerful and surprising, and we think they'll give you a real flavour of what the event was all about.WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? The One on Justin Fashanu
Wednesday would have been the 59th birthday of Justin Fashanu. The footballer was the first black player to earn a one-million pound transfer fee – and played for twenty-two clubs in a career that spanned two decades. Fashanu was also the first male English professional to come out as gay while playing – and became the victim of constant crowd abuse as a result.Ultimately, Fashanu took his own life – but on Wednesday, he’s being posthumously inducted into the National Football Museum’s Hall of Fame for his contributions to the sport. His niece Amal will be accepting the honour on his behalf – and joins us for this powerful, poignant episode on her uncle’s legacy, as well as her memories of him as a man. There’s so much on the agenda – from visibility to inclusivity to mental health – and we think this is an interview that you won’t forget any time soon.WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH OUR GUEST? @AmalFashanu @TJFFoundationWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Richard Hearne
We’ve often heard the phrase ‘get on your bike’ – and in Manchester, one group has taken it literally!‘Pride Out’ is Manchester’s first LGBT+ cycling group – and is already going from strength to strength. Richard Hearne is the man behind it - and has joined us for a brand-new episode of the podcast to talk about everything to do with the group. From how it came about to the importance of having inclusive spaces in sport, this is a fascinating conversation - including a segment on the concept of 'self censorship' that lots of LGBTQ+ people will be able to relate to.And just one more thing - if Richard comes up to you in the supermarket, it might be a good idea to hold onto your rice. The One with Liam Claffey
Last summer, the Sheffield Eagles had arguably the biggest moment in their history when they came from behind to beat Widnes at Wembley to win the first-ever 1895 Cup.It was a huge moment for the rugby league side - and watching it all unfold was Eagles' general manager Liam Claffey. He's a man that lives and breathes the Eagles - and, as a gay man, he's certainly been in demand as the sport reacts to the signing of Izzy Folau by the Catalan Dragons. We reckon this is a cracking listen and a proper insight into what it's like to be a GM - doing everything from administration to marketing to designing the kit - and how you match professionalism with the passion you have as a fan.WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH OUR GUEST? The One with Russ Saunders
We've covered all sorts of sports since we launched the BBC's LGBT Sport Podcast back in 2018.From athletics to pro-wrestling, we've done the lot - but today, for the first time, we take a look at the world of horse-racing.Russ Saunders is one of the people behind LGBT+ Inclusive Horse Racing - a new group that's trying to make the sport more welcoming and accepting for the LGBTQ+ community. We'll be honest - we didn't know a tremendous amount about the sport before we started chatting with Russ, and he's the perfect guide to the sport of kings. This is a fascinating conversation that covers everything from how he got involved in the sport in the first place; to the steps that this syndicate is taking to help make the sport more inclusive; to what it is about horse-racing that continues to appeal to him.We loved chatting with Russ - and we think you'll find him every bit as erudite and interesting as we did.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? The One with Danny McKeown-Henshall
We all know getting out and about is good for you, from both a physical and mental health point of view. But research shows that many gay, bisexual and transgender men find it difficult to get involved in sport - because they've often experienced abuse or discrimination when they've tried in the past. That's where the charity OutdoorLads is making a difference - by offering activities for gay, bisexual and transgender men that are based around the themes of staying active.Vice-chair Danny McKeown-Henshall is the organisation's vice-chair - and has been telling us all about what the organisation does and how he got involved. The One with Ellie Mackin
Ellie Mackin isn't the most famous person we've had on the BBC's LGBT Sport Podcast, or the most accomplished. But I promise, she's provided us with an episode that will stick with you for a very long time - and a story that you genuinely couldn't make up. In fact, we don't want to tell you too much about Ellie, as we want you to listen and hear her remarkable tale in her own words. So, we'll let you know that she is a former champion goalball player - and that hers is a story of overcoming adversity, discovering your identity, and finding a place where you truly belong. And we think that, once you hear Ellie's story, you won't ever forget it.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @elliegoalball94WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Tadd Fujikawa
Tadd Fujikawa is used to making history. In 2006 - at the age of just fifteen - the golfer became the youngest person to ever qualify for the US Open. And then a decade or so later, he came out as gay - something no male pro had ever done before. So what has life been like for Tadd in the time since he opened up publicly about his sexuality - and what has life been like since then? We've wanted to have him on the podcast for a long time - and we've finally managed to rig up the technology between Cornwall and Hawaii to make it happen. In this episode, Tadd talks openly and frankly about his journey - from first picking up a club in Hawaii to playing at the US Open to why visibility in sport is so, so important. The One with Emma Collings-Barnes and Greg King-Limb
We've been trying to put our finger on why we enjoyed this episode so much.Emma Collings-Barnes is a former British Open Water Champion who competed at the European Championships, while Greg King-Limb has successfully coached swimmers at a county, regional and national level. They are - respectively - Director of Swimming and Assistant Director of Swimming at Mount Kelly: a school in Devon with a programme that has produced scores of international swimmers, including those who have medalled at an Olympic, Paralympic, World, Commonwealth and European level. That, on its own, is fascinating enough - but what really makes this resonate is the fact that Emma and Greg are both LGBTQ+, and feel that creating a culture of tolerance and respect with the students they coach is just as important as ensuring they get the right results in the pool. And let's be honest - how many of us could have done with seeing exactly that kind of openness and honesty when we were at school and, perhaps, coming to terms with our own sexuality or gender identity? So, listen to this one and enjoy it - because we really loved making it.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? The One with Claire Purdy
It's very hard to describe Claire Purdy without using the word 'legend' - because genuinely, that's what she is.At the end of last month, she made her 250th appearance for Wasps Ladies - and as if that mammoth achievement wasn't enough, she was part of the England side that lifted the World Cup in 2014.Few people have done more to be a servant to the game - and it's an absolute pleasure to have the chance to sit down with her for this episode of the podcast. There's plenty on the agenda for this one, including how Claire got her start in the game; whether winning the World Cup in 2014 banished the memories of losing in 2010; returning to work and reality; how Wasps is like a family; and what the next stage of her life has in store.Honestly, we loved having someone as articulate, modest and open as Claire on the podcast - and we're sure you'll love her as well!WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? The One with Carl Jackson
"We're here to play hockey, win games and drink beers..."That's the ethos of the Southern Lights Ice Hockey Club in Melbourne, Australia - and, in almost every way, they're just like all the other sides they end up playing. But in one regard, the Lights are entirely unique - as they were set up last year to be the country's first-ever inclusive hockey team. The team's creation came at the same time as the Australian LGBT Ice Hockey organisation was set up - so why are they both needed, and what difference are they making?President Carl Jackson joins us to talk all about it - including how he got into the sport; how the Lights were set up; the ethos that keeps driving it all forward; and what the goal is for the future. Oh, and we think we've committed to training with the Lights if we ever end up in Australia - so wish us well with that one!Genuinely, Carl is a lovely bloke to chat with - incredibly articulate and passionate about his sport - and we reckon he's the perfect guest to get the New Year underway!WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? https://southernlightsicehockey.com/WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE SHOW? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Nicola Adams
It’s fair to say Nicola Adams has helped to define this sporting decade.A double Olympic gold medallist, she's been one of the biggest sporting personalities in the country ever since she burst onto the national scene as one of the faces of London 2012. Add to that her achievements as a Commonwealth, World and European champion - as well as success when she turned pro - and it's no wonder she's incredibly proud of what she achieved, not only inside the ring but outside the ropes as well. We've wanted to have Nicola on the podcast since we began more than a year ago - and we're so glad we've finally managed to make it happen. There's loads going on in this episode - from making ends meet as an amateur to what comes next after Nicola's retirement - and we're privileged to have had the chance to get so much of this sporting superstar's time.Honestly, it's one of our favourite episodes yet.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @NicolaAdamsOBE www.nicola-adams.comReporter: Jack Murley.

The One with Lizzie Williams
She’s one of the country’s leading wheelchair racers – with dreams of making it to the Paralympics before her career is over. But Lizzie Williams’ sporting career has been far from straightforward, with difficulties on and off the track that would have caused many other athletes to quit entirely. From fighting to get the funding she needs to continue competing to coming to terms with her own sexuality, it’s been quite a journey for the athlete. We loved chatting with Lizzie about her story - including introducing us to the phrase 'queer info-sponge' - and hearing about the role model she's become to other LGBTQ+ people in the world of sport.Plus, we drop some Chicago lyrics - so that's got to be worth a listen!WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @LizzieWheelz facebook.com/lizziewheelzgb WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Craig Maxwell-Keys
Craig Maxwell-Keys had barely stopped playing due to injury when he took charge of his first game of rugby. That was at a youth festival – and since then, his career has been on an upward trajectory. He’s refereed Premiership, Challenge Cup and international games – and was the man in the middle when 80-thousand people packed out Twickenham to watch the Army take on the Navy. Of course, if you’re a rugby fan, you probably know all of this – but what you may not know is that Maxwell-Keys is gay. He’s never spoken about his sexuality before – but for this year’s Rainbow Laces campaign, sat down with us for his first-ever podcast appearance. We're really grateful he took the time to join us - and allowed us to share his story. The One with Conor Shaw
It's fair to say that Conor Shaw lives and breathes football. As the Digital Content Manager at Wycombe Wanderers, he's one of the people responsible for engaging more and more fans with the successes that the League One club is having - and with the club flying high at the moment, it's a pretty good gig to have. He's also fairly private about his personal life - which is why we're particularly grateful that he took the time to talk so openly and honestly for this episode of the podcast about what it's like to be a gay man in the beautiful game.On the agenda today - the importance of #RainbowLaces, how football has always been part of his life - and how a person in his job manages to stop themselves from constantly checking their social media! We loved having Conor on - and we think you'll love him as well.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @ConorShaw @wwfcofficialWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Ryan Atkin
They're often the people who come in for the most abuse in football - mocked when they get decisions wrong and hardly recognised when they get the tough calls right. In fact, most referees would probably do anything to have a quiet life - so why, two years ago, did Ryan Atkin make the decision to become one of the few people in the men's game to open up about being gay? He's been speaking frankly and honestly on this brand-new episode of the podcast about why more gay men don't come out in football; about whether he'd referee in places with poor LGBTQ+ rights records; about his new work with Stonewall and the importance of representation ... and who he thinks will win the Premier League.WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH OUR GUEST? Luke Fenton is the chairman of the Caledonian Thebans – the inclusive team looking to bring the tournament to Scotland in 2022 - and joins us for a brand-new episode of the podcast. The One with Chris 'Big Bear' McNaghten
He's one of the strongest men on the island of Ireland - but Chris McNaghten says he's not always had the inner-strength to match his outer muscle. The reason was simple. In a part of the UK that has lagged behind the rest of the nation in terms of LGBTQ rights, Chris knew he was gay - and was absolutely terrified about what that could mean.So why is he so open about his sexuality now - and what does it mean to him to become a role model in his own right? This is an absolutely fascinating listen - on the life of a strongman; on what it takes to make it to the top of the game; on why Chris is now comfortable with himself - and who introduced him to the 'different' meaning of the word 'bear'!WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH OUR GUEST? The One with Sammy Walker
As a child, Sammy Walker loved playing football - and was blinking good at it as well. Scouted by Wycombe Wanderers and part of the academy at Watford FC as a teenager, the game was Sammy's life - but then, there were eight years in the wilderness, where getting back onto the pitch as a player was almost unimaginable to her. Why? Well, Sammy is transgender - and didn't think there'd be a place for her in football after she began coming to terms with her identity. But now, she's back playing regularly again - so what drew her back? This episode is so powerful, as Sammy explains exactly what it's like to be a trans person in football - from the fear of what others will think, to the importance of inclusive sides. And if that sounds a bit heavy, we also talk about FIFA vs Pro Evo -- and why the number 7 is so important to her!WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? The One with Huw Ware
For Huw Ware, getting involved in darts was a case of being in the right place at the right time -- and watching a match that got him hooked! From there, he went on to play at an international level -- but officiating was the path he ultimately ended up following. Then, he ended up forging a path of his own - when he came out and as the first openly gay man in the sport. We've wanted to have Huw on for a while - and he doesn't disappoint. Candid and funny, open and personal, Huw takes us inside the sport - giving us the lowdown on everything from the support he's had from the PDC, to some of the lower moments he's experienced since coming out.Plus, why he won't play darts to relax anymore - and how his style of announcing the scores has evolved over the years!WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH OUR GUEST? The One with Tom Carr
If you encountered homophobia on the terraces, would you turn round and tackle it?That's the type of question that - sadly - is all too common for LGBTQ+ football fans, and one that Tom Carr is familiar with. The journalist set up the Argyle Pride supporters group for LGBTQ+ fans of Plymouth Argyle, and has been speaking to us for a brand-new episode of the podcast. On the agenda - reconciling his identity as an LGBTQ+ person with his love of football; what could be preventing a male professional footballer from coming out in the British game; confronting homophobia when it happens in person; and getting started in journalism. He gives the most eloquent description of what it's like to hear homophobia at a game that we've had in a long time - and we hope you enjoy hearing from him as much as we did.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @ItsMeTomCWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE SHOW? @jack_murley [email protected]

It's fair to say the Kings Cross Steelers have been on quite a journey over the past twenty-five years.Last month, they were named Men's Team of the Year at the National Rugby Awards - but when they were founded back in 1995, they sometimes struggled to find opponents to play against. Why? The One with Luke Tuffs
Sometimes, we speak with guests who have such a passion for their sport that they find it hard to contain. It literally spills out of them - and fires up everyone around them as well! Luke Tuffs is one of those people - the manager of Knaphill FC, and a man who has loved football for as long as he can remember. He's someone we've wanted to have on the podcast for a long time - and he doesn't disappointed. On the agenda in this episode - learning to get the respect of a squad; the pressure he puts on himself; his experiences of being LGBT in the amateur game versus the league structure; and who he'd like to match up against as a manager if *every* option was on the table. It was cracking to have him on the show - and we really think you'll enjoy hearing from Luke as much as we did.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? When she's not on the course, she's encouraging others to get involved in the game, doing her own podcast -- and playing VERY competitive games of table tennis with her wife.On the agenda with her - coming through the American collegiate system; the hole-in-one that changed her life; and getting stuck in a diamond bracelet!WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @BethAllenGolf http://www.bethallengolf.com/WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE SHOW? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Vicki Carter
She describes herself as 'an average pool swimmer' at best - but it's probably fair to say that Vicki Carter is selling herself short. She's competed at numerous Gay Games - and last month, she became the latest person to conquer the English Channel. Why? Well, partly to prove something to herself - but also to raise the money necessary to host the UK's first awards shows celebrating LGBTQ+ people in sport. She's been speaking about her training; the mantra that kept her going; why it was something she wanted to do - and why she's so passionate about getting more LGBTQ+ individuals active.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @out_for_sport @outtoswimWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE SHOW @jack_murley [email protected]

The One on Homophobia and Transphobia in Sport
For one episode, we've decided to do something different. To focus not on the training schedules and achievements of one amazing LGBTQ+ sportsperson – but on the reality of what it's like to experience homophobia and transphobia in sport. After all, at a time when Kick It Out is reporting increased discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in football, and where reported transgender hate crimes in England, Scotland and Wales have increased by more than 80 percent, how could we not? So, this compilation episode is seven of our previous guests, giving us seven different takes on the homophobia and transphobia that they've experienced. We won't lie. It's pretty heavy -- but we felt it was important to do. And we promise, normal service will be resumed next time.THE LIST OF VOICES YOU HEARD: 1) Jack Murley - presenter of the BBC's LGBT Sport Podcast. 2) Verity Smith - transgender rugby player. 3) Liz Carmouche - MMA fighter and UFC history-maker. 4) Ryan Mather - the founder of the Proud Terriers supporters group. 5) John Dickinson-Lilley - the former British and European skiing champion. 6) Aslie Pitter - Stonewall FC founder member. 7) Di Cunningham - chair of Pride in Football. The One with Alan Baser
Imagine having the final say on whether someone wins a gold medal -- or goes home with absolutely nothing? That's the sort of pressure that falls on Alan Baser's shoulders as one of the most respected judges in the world of sailing. It's a vocation that's taken him across the globe, from World Championships to Olympic Games -- and it all began with a bit of messing around on a river in Plymouth. He's been telling us about the life of a judge; about getting decisions right and not taking the work home with you; about how even he feels 'imposter syndrome'; and how singing in a choir helps him relax! He's a brilliant guest - and we think you'll like him as much as we do.
