The One with Sporting Pride

It’s a bonus weekend episode of the podcast – where we’re shining a spotlight on another grassroots group making a real difference in the world of sport. Karina Murray is from Sporting Pride – a volunteer-run community organisation working towards the goal of making Ireland’s sporting community the most inclusive in the world. And honestly, she’s a fantastic advocate for the work that the group is doing. There’s lots on the agenda in this one - how the organisation came about; how it drew inspiration and support from other groups; the role that the Gay Games played in helping it come about; the difference Sporting Pride is making; and Karina’s own sporting experiences. And as if that wasn’t enough, we’re also looking ahead to a special event they’ve got planned with Katie McCabe – the Arsenal footballer and Republic of Ireland captain – on Tuesday 23rd February at 7pm.WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH OUR GUESTS? @SportingPrideIEWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE SHOW? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with the Sydney Convicts

It’s time for a special bonus episode of the podcast – think of this as a director’s cut!Basically, we published our special episode looking at the history of the Bingham Cup, featuring the thoughts of loads of brilliant guests from right around the world. One of the guests was Tom Crotty from the Sydney Convicts (the reigning Bingham Cup champions) – and his story was so fascinating that we wanted to bring it to you in full, and shine a bit of a spotlight on the Convicts as well.So this is Tom’s story – of how he came back to rugby; of the difference that rugby has made in his life; of his experience of the first Bingham Cup and the importance of allies; and why he’s glad he came back to the game.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? https://sydneyconvicts.org/WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected] CREDIT: Sydney Convicts

The One on the Harlequins Pride Game

It’s been exactly one year since Harlequins played London Irish at the Stoop in the Premiership in professional rugby union’s first-ever Pride Game. The event also included a panel featuring LGBTQ+ people in rugby, and was a real celebration of inclusivity and diversity in the sport. So, one year on, we thought we’d speak to the driving force behind the whole day about how it all came about. James Swanson is Harlequins’ Customer Experience manager, and is a brilliant guest that takes us behind-the-scenes to learn more about how the Pride Game came together. There’s also plenty of chat about the potential for a second Pride Game later this year; how Harlequins are breaking new ground with rugby union’s first-ever LGBTQ+ supporters club; and how allies, inside and outside the club, helped to make the day such a success.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? The One with Jack Murley

It’s the 150th episode of the BBC’s LGBT Sport Podcast – and to mark the occasion, we’re switching things up a bit!Instead of asking the questions, Jack is the one answering them – as he jumps into the hot-seat for the first time to talk in-depth about his experiences of being an LGBTQ+ person in sport. The man asking the questions is award-winning sports broadcaster Ross Ellis, and there’s no topic that’s off-limits for this conversation. From getting his start in sports broadcasting to starting the podcast; from his own coming out story to dealing with social media abuse; from the art of a good commentary to what’s next for the show – it’s all covered in this conversation. After 149 episodes of asking the questions, it was about time this happened - and we hope you enjoy what you hear. And honestly, thank you so much for the support you’ve shown in getting the show to this point – we couldn’t have done it without you.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT TODAY’S GUEST INTERVIEWER? @RossEllisTweetsWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE SHOW? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One on the History of the Gay Games

It’s LGBT+ History Month – and that means some of our podcasts are going to take on a slightly different flavour in February. Instead of having just a single guest, we’re going to be putting out episodes that look at major sporting milestones, moments and themes for the LGBTQ+ community in sport. And today, we’re focusing on the remarkable story of the Gay Games – and how one doctor’s dream of an inclusive sporting event based on the model of the Olympics became a reality bigger than he could ever have dreamed of.From San Francisco to Hong Kong and everything in between, we’ll be looking at the Games’ growth; their importance; the memories of people who have taken part; and what the future holds for them. It’s a cracking episode, looking at an event which, in its own way, has helped to change the sporting world. And once you’ve listened to this, why not check out all of BBC Sport’s platforms to see some of the other amazing content that’s being put out for LGBT+ History Month.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? @GayGames @GayGamesHK2022WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE SHOW? @jack_murley [email protected] PHOTO CREDIT: Getty Images

The One with Erin Walters-Williams

Today, we’re hearing from someone who has been to more tournaments than you can shake a stick at - perhaps literally, in this case! Lacrosse player Erin Walters-Williams (she/ her) is originally from Long Island, New York, but now lives in the UK.A double European silver-medallist who has represented Wales at two World Cups, she’s also heavily involved with the administration, growth and diversity of the game – as part of both European Lacrosse and World Lacrosse as well. And Erin’s story is a brilliant one to tell – open, honest and genuine. From growing up in a community where sport took centre-stage, to the pressures of collegiate sport in the USA; from bouncing back from injury, to the reality of coming out, to realising her dreams in the sport … it’s a great conversation with someone we’ve wanted to have on the show for a while! The One with Martin Stark

We’ve got a cracking episode of the podcast today where our main focus is on boxing – and a man who is determined to make his mark in more ways than one. Martin Stark is the brains and driving force behind the first-ever World Gay Boxing Championships, which are set to be held in Sydney, Australia in 2023. Some fight nights and test events are coming up in the not-too-distant future – and on the show today, we’re hearing all about how Martin has made the Championships happen. It’s a journey that has had more than its fair share of challenges – from living with illness and overcoming near-death experiences; to taking a risk and trying something new; to driving through change and trying to create something from nothing. But one thing that comes through clearly is Martin’s passion for the sport; for building inclusion; and making a lasting impression with these championships. The One with Dave Bradshaw

If you are a professional wrestling fan, you will know Dave Bradshaw’s work. He’s one of Britain’s top play-by-play commentators and has called some of the UK's biggest independent wrestling events over the past few years – as well as matches with the likes of Kenny Omega, Sami Zayn, Kurt Angle, Cody Rhodes and more. For this month’s Wrestletalk magazine, Dave has written an article looking at pro wrestling’s relationship with, and portrayal of, the LGBTQ+ community. And, for the first time, Dave has chosen to open up about his own sexuality – both in the article which is out today, and in this conversation with us.We’re chuffed to bits he’s chosen to speak with us, and there’s loads to like in this episode. Getting his break in the industry; the science of calling matches; working alongside your icons; his decision to open up about being gay; what made him hesitant to do it before, and why now is the right time; and the impact he hopes both the article and this conversation will have … honestly, we could go on and on.We love this episode - because it's an honest, genuine chat with a really decent bloke who has chosen to share his story in the hope of showing that the professional wrestling business has a place for you, no matter how you identify or who you love. And really, you can't say fairer than that! The One on Copenhagen 2021

This August, Copenhagen and Malmo will host one of the year’s most significant LGBTQ+ events in the form of Copenhagen 2021.It’s a celebration of arts, culture, LGBTQ+ history and sport – with both World Pride and EuroGames a key part of the event. And to mark the countdown to the extravaganza, we’re joined by two of the people who are helping to make it happen. Katja Moesgaard is the chair of Copenhagen 2021, and Christian Bigom is the chair of ‘Pan Idræt’ – Copenhagen’s largest inclusive sports organisation. This is a great conversation that squeezes a lot of things into it – from Katja’s work with the Danish FA to Christian’s passion for inclusivity; as well as the planning that’s gone into EuroGames; how they plan to adapt it as necessary in response to COVID; how you can get involved; and what it means for Scandinavia to host such a prestigious event. It’s a lovely chat with two great representatives of inclusive sport in Europe, and it’s great to shine a light on what should be a top event this summer.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? www.copenhagen2021.com @CPH2021WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? The One with LGBTQ+ in Sport

They often say that the most important changes in life are driven from the ground up, and the three guests we have for the podcast this week are certainly doing their bit to try and make a difference.Ed Kandel, Gurdas Singh and Katrina Kelly are all part of LGBTQ+ In Sport – a social enterprise looking to tackle discrimination, build diversity and create a sense of community in sport. And unlike lots of the organisations and groups we have on this podcast, which tend to be well established, this one is fairly new – so it’s a chance to get in at the ground level with three people who are really passionate about what they do.There’s lots in this chat - Ed and Gurdas’ experiences of being LGBTQ+ in sport, as well as Katrina’s of being an ally; how it all came about, their goals for the future; how they’ve all dealt with the pandemic … and we think you’re really going to like it.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? @LGBTQSportWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Lewis Ward and Alan Quick

It’s time for another of our special episodes, looking at the importance of being an ally in sport – and with the Rainbow Laces campaign in full swing, we couldn’t have picked two better guests. Lewis Ward plays for Exeter City, who are currently fifth in League 2 and preparing for their Rainbow Laces match with Tranmere Rovers on Saturday. Lewis is straight – and joined us alongside Alan Quick from the Proud Grecians for another terrific conversation on the topic of allyship in sport. It’s so rare that you get to speak in-depth with a professional footballer about their take on some of the things we talk about regularly on the podcast –players coming out, what the Rainbow Laces campaign means to Lewis personally, the importance of education, and how everyone has a part to play in making sport for all. We also hear from Alan about what it means to see allies like Lewis stepping up to be involved, his friendship with Justin Fashanu, the evolution of things like the Rainbow Laces campaign, and what it’s been like to be a fan in the pandemic. This is an honest and frank conversation between two great guests, and we really think you’ll enjoy it.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? @OfficialECFC @ProudGreciansWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected] CREDITS: Exeter City Football Club

The One with Caron Morton and Peter Heather

Golf is one of those sports that manages to get under your skin - where the joy of one perfect shot tempers the frustration of a hundred bad ones that disappear into the trees, never to be seen again. Two people who know all about it are Caron Morton from the Girls in Golf Society and Peter Heather from the Irons Golf Society – two top inclusive clubs here in the UK.They’ve both joined us for a terrific episode, looking at all sorts of different things – from how it was to go without golf in lockdown, to the importance of feeling comfortable and welcomed within the sport. We also look at how each group would like to expand their membership, why role-models are important, and what it is that keeps them coming back to the course, week in and week out.And as if that weren’t enough to tempt you to listen, we also hear about the remarkable number of holes-in-one that one of our guests has had … and there’s also a special appearance by some dogs as well!WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? @GirlsInGolf @ironsgolf @EnglandGolfWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? You may not know their names - but between them, Lou Englefield and Piara Powar have spent years fighting to make football a place where everyone is welcome. Lou is the Campaign Director for Football v Homophobia, Director of Pride Sports, co-chair of Pride House International – in fact, there aren’t many hats she doesn’t wear! – while Piara is the Executive Director of the Fare network, which campaigns against discrimination and to promote social inclusion via football in more than forty countries. And as a pair, they’re two terrific guests for the latest in our special set of episodes, looking at what it means to be an ally in sport. We touch on lots of themes in this podcast – the concept of being an ally; the importance of feeling safe asking questions; how allyship can work both ways; and what can cause people to want to step up as an ally.We couldn’t have hoped for a better pairing to continue this mini-series of episodes looking at allyship, and we’re really grateful that Lou and Piara both took the time to join us for it.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? @LouEnglefield @PiaraPowar @FvHtweets @farenetWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Andrea Murray and Gemma Hunter

When we talk about sport, we tend to focus on the players and coaches who grab the headlines each week. But behind-the-scenes, there are lots of dedicated people who often don't end up in the limelight – and today on the podcast, we’re shining the spotlight on two of them.Andrea Murray works for the Rugby Football League to promote the sport in schools across the UK, and her wife Gemma Hunter is part of the set-up with England Golf, where she's Head of Handicapping and Course Rating. They’re married, and are a pair of terrific guests to join us on the podcast with some brilliant stories to tell - from their love of sport to their respective jobs to their own coming out stories. The One with Craig Maxwell-Keys and Christophe Ridley

For more than two years, we've been shining a spotlight on the stories of people in sport who just so happen to be LGBTQ+.But for the next few weeks, we’re going to be changing up our format with some special additional episodes, looking at what it means to be an ally and how everyone can play a role in making sport inclusive for all. The idea is simple – we’ll take two people from the world of sport, one who is LGBTQ+ and one who is a straight ally, and simply have a chat with them both about their experiences. We’ll hear how our straight guest offers support to the LGBTQ+ community and, in some cases, challenged their own perceptions along the way, and discuss what sort of difference their role as an ally made to our LGBTQ+ guest as well. And, as always, the conversations will (hopefully!) offer some fascinating sporting stories too. To kick us off, we’ve got two fantastic guests, as Premiership Rugby referees Craig Maxwell-Keys and Christophe Ridley join the podcast for the first of our special episodes looking at what it means to be an ally. Craig is gay, and shared his story on this podcast almost exactly a year ago, and Christophe is straight. And honestly, we couldn’t wish for two better people to kick this special set of episodes off, as there’s loads on the agenda for this chat – how the pair got to know each other; this year’s Rainbow Laces campaign and what it means to each man; what being an ally means to Christophe; how Christophe supported Craig after his appearance on this podcast; refereeing in empty stadiums and, in Craig’s case, taking charge of the Premiership final just a few weeks ago; and how each man has passed the time in lockdown. We think it’s a fascinating conversation - open, honest and genuine – and we’re really grateful both men took the time to join us for it.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? @PremRugby @EnglandRugbyWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

A former World Number 2 with more than 100 England caps, she competed at four separate Commonwealth Games where she picked up three silver medals to add to her multiple European championships. She’s also an all-round lovely individual, and someone we’ve wanted to have on for a while – and we’re delighted we’ve finally managed to make it happen by linking up with Jenny in Australia. There’s lots of great stuff in this conversation – how Jenny got her start in the sport; her memories of her first England call-up; some of her favourite moments, including her experiences of multiple Commonwealth Games; finding love on the tour and her coming out story; and what life is like now after retiring from the sport. So we’re delighted she’s chosen to spend some time with us, and given us one of the most open, candid and honest conversation we’ve ever done. There’s a lot in this conversation – mental health, finding your own identity, overcoming adversity, discovering your internal drive to be the best, using your platform to spread social change, educating yourself about issues you care about – but most importantly, it’s a genuine conversation with someone who has chosen to share her story with us.Doing this episode was a privilege, and we really hope you come away from it feeling the same way we did as well – because we think it’s something special.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? They say that behind every great athlete, there's a great team - and in the world of British swimming, that includes Josh Rudd. He's a performance lifestyle adviser with British Swimming and the English Institute of Sport, helping some of Team GB's top swimming medal hopes get ready for the Tokyo Olympics and beyond. He’s also the brains behind Pride in Water – a new network supporting LGBTQ+ people across swimming, water polo, diving, synchro and aquatics in general. This is a cracking conversation about a whole load of different things – from Josh’s love of sport; his time refereeing football matches at a semi-pro level; the actual work of a performance lifestyle adviser and the difference it makes; the founding of Pride in Water and the difference it’s already making … and for some reason, at the end, a mini-review of Sex and the City!Like we say, it’s a wide-ranging chat with a great guest – and we really think you’re going to like it.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? The Second Anniversary Episode

On September 25th 2018, we published our first-ever episode of the BBC's LGBT Sport Podcast. We thought that, at best, we'd last for a couple of months - and that if we reached fifty episodes, we'd have done well for ourselves. So you can probably imagine how chuffed we are to be celebrating two years of the podcast, and of telling the stories of LGBTQ+ people from across the world of sport. It's been quite a ride - 133 guests across 125 weekly episodes, encompassing everyone from Olympic gold medalists to grassroots supporters clubs - and on this episode, we thought we'd look back at some of the most memorable moments of the past twelve months. This episode is a compilation of great guests you may have missed that we think show what we do best - so hopefully, you'll enjoy what you hear. And as we say every week, we wouldn't have accomplished any of this if it hadn't been for your constant support, and we can't thank you enough for it.WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? The One with Shelley Holroyd

She spent nearly two decades as one of Britain's top field athletes, competing at multiple World, Commonwealth and European championships - as well as the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. After she put down her javelin, Shelley Holroyd turned her attention to helping young athletes and para-athletes achieve their full potential as a coach – and now, she's part of the team behind the Athletics Pride Network, which supports gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in the sport. She’s a cracking guest to have on the podcast this week – and we talked about an awful lot in this episode. From the unusual way she got her start in athletics to the dramatic incident that almost ended her career for good; her experiences as an LGBTQ+ person in athletics, including some of the discrimination she faced along the way; the difference that the Athletics Pride Network would have had when she was competing; and her transition from competing to coaching … yeah, there’s an awful lot to enjoy here. We’re so lucky to have had such a brilliant guest like Shelley, and we think you’ll like her as much as we did.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @AthleticsPride1 @BritAthletics [email protected] TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Cassius

Professional wrestling is a unique form of entertainment - and to succeed in it, you need a unique set of skills.Charisma, athleticism and - you would think - a certain macho toughness. But for UK star Cassius, wrestling was actually the place where he learned to embrace his inner femininity, and accept who he really is. And now, he's using those traits to make an impact, inside and outside the ring – and over the course of this conversation, you’ll hear about how he’s making that happen, and inspiring other LGBTQ+ people in the process. This chat has everything – how Cassius got his love of pro wrestling; the development of his in-ring skills and persona; how wrestling helped him become his authentic self and the growing number of out LGBTQ+ stars making a name for themselves in the industry; and his most memorable moment inside the ring.Even if you’re not a wrestling fan, you’re going to love this conversation with an absolute fascinating young man, and we hope you give it a listen.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @NeonCassiusWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Matt Bishop

For many people, Formula 1 offers the ultimate glamorous lifestyle.Fast cars, exotic places, exciting races - what's not to love?! For many years, Matt Bishop was right at the heart of the sport - first as a journalist reporting on the action, then as the PR chief for the McLaren team - and he was at one point, in his own words, 'the only gay in the F1 village'.Matt's now the communications director for the innovative W Series, and has just published his first novel (‘The Boy Made The Difference’) set in the time of the HIV/AIDS crisis in London in the late 1980s/early 1990s.He’s an amazing guest on the podcast this week, and we really enjoyed our conversation. It focuses on all sorts of topics – where Matt’s love of motorsport came from; his time as a journalist in the glamorous world of F1; the inspiration behind ‘The Boy Made The Difference’ and the drive that made Matt write it; and his experiences as an LGBTQ+ person in motorsports in general. It’s a powerful episode, this one, which we think will make you smile, think and laugh – and we’re really grateful Matt took the time to join us.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @TheBishF1WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE SHOW? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One on the Union Cup

From the Olympics to the European Championships, 2021 is shaping up to be a huge year for sport. And in Birmingham, fans are counting down until the end of April when the city will host the Union Cup - Europe's largest inclusive rugby tournament.Teams from across the continent will take part in the event, so it seemed appropriate to make this episode about two of the people who have helped to make it happen.Alistair Burford is the tournament director, and David Cumpston - or Fifi, as he's also known - is the chairman of the Birmingham Bulls - the club that will be hosting the tournament. This is a cracking conversation about all sorts of different things – from the founding of the Bulls to the attitude of the sides they play; the importance of inclusivity in rugby, and sport as a space where people can be themselves; the process behind bidding for the Union Cup and how COVID-19 may impact on things; and how folks in the Birmingham area can get involved in making it a success.Oh, and Eurovision also comes up, for reasons we still don't quite understand! David and Alistair are two brilliant guests, and we really think you’re going to like hearing from them. The One with Emma Wiggs

Emma Wiggs is one of those truly extraordinary athletes that come along very rarely in life. The para-canoeist is a five-time European champion, a seven-time World Champion and the reigning Paralympic champion after taking gold in Rio four years ago. She's been made an MBE for her services to the sport - and as if that wasn't impressive enough, she also represented Para GB in the sitting volleyball at London 2012.Emma wasn't born with a disability, and only began para-sports after being struck by a mystery virus while on a gap year in Australia. She's a fantastic guest who we could have spent forever chatting with. But in the time we had together, we managed to squeeze in so much - from Emma's love of sport to adapting to life with a disability; what pushed her to become a Paralympian and then change discipline; her successes in paracanoe and the postponement of the Tokyo Paralympics ... honestly, the list goes on and on.We really, really think you'll like this episode - as we certainly loved chatting with Emma.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @emwiggsy emmawiggs.comWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Zoe Saynor

You probably wouldn’t expect a former England rugby player to be leading research into the physical and mental impact of coronavirus in the UK.But then again, Zoe Saynor’s career has never really been done by the book. The Harlequins player announced her retirement this weekend, so what better time to sit down with an absolutely brilliant guest to talk about her life, on and off the pitch?Zoe is a fantastic guest, talking about getting her start in the game (which came relatively late compared to others); who helped to develop and nurture her as a player; her memories of her England call-up; her research during lockdown, and balancing her academic and sporting careers (including the pressure of achieving her PhD); her experiences of being a gay woman in rugby; and helping to break down stereotypes in the game.We feel really lucky to have had the chance to sit down with Zoe and look back at her amazing career, and we hope you like this episode as much as we do.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @Zoe_SaynorWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected] PHOTO CREDIT: Harlequins

The One on the Tour De Trans

There've been plenty of bike-rides from Lands End to John O'Groats, but this one is truly unique.Paeton McGuire and their son Callum are preparing to cycle the 1000 kilometre route later this month in what's being billed as the 'Tour De Trans' - an event designed to raise awareness of the issues facing transgender people across the UK.It’s one heck of a journey – and ‘journey’ is probably the best word to describe what Paeton has been going through over the past few weeks, months and years. In this extraordinary episode, you’ll hear Paeton talk about their love of cycling; how they qualified as a British Cycling coach; their struggle to come to terms with their own identity; the realisation and acceptance that they were non-binary just as lockdown began to hit; the inspiration behind the Tour De Trans; and what they hope it’ll achieve. This isn’t always an easy listen as Paeton describes what they’ve been through, but the message that comes through at the end is one of hope, love and acceptance. We really hope you enjoy it. WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? @TourDeTransWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

Natalie Washington can still remember how it felt to score her first goal back on the pitch after around two years away from the beautiful game.It was a special moment for her - not least because the last time Natalie was playing, it was in the men's leagues. She's a fascinating guest on the podcast this week, as she shares her story of what it's like to be a trans-woman in football and so much more besides. There’s loads to chat about – from where Natalie’s love of sport came from; her transition and what inspired her to come back to the beautiful game; her views on the portrayal of the trans community in sport; and what pivotal event rekindled her love of football. The One with Sue Day

You could call Sue Day a trailblazer - but honestly, that'd hardly do her justice. The rugby player captained England in both the fifteens and sevens form of the game, winning three Grand Slams and playing in three separate World Cups in the process.Away from the pitch, she's been just as impressive - becoming the first female president of Wasps, and in her current role as the Chief Financial Officer of the RFU, is one of the most senior people in the governance of the English game. She’s a brilliant guest and there’s so much to enjoy in this conversation – from the unusual way Sue got her start in rugby; the highs of her international career; the evolution of women’s sport (in terms of funding and support); her experiences of being LGBTQ+ in rugby and what the game does right; and how she manages to switch off away from rugby. There's bucketloads of stuff to enjoy in this episode - from how he got his start in the sport to bouncing back from injury; from claiming an historic bronze medal at the European Championships to helping the sport gain a bigger profile; and what impact, if any, his sexuality has had on his progress in the sport. The One on Jamie Johnson

It's one of the most popular programmes on CBBC - the BBC's dedicated channel for kids aged anywhere between 6 and 16.Jamie Johnson focuses on life for a group of young players hoping to make it into the competitive world of pro-football - and this week, it's been making more waves than usual after one of the main characters came out as gay. It's something that's been tackled before on-screen in grown-up films like The Pass and Mario, but it's the first time a children's television drama has taken a look at a subject like this. And on the podcast this week, we've got two of the key people that helped bring this storyline to life. Patrick Ward plays Dillon - the character the storyline focuses on - while Shaun Duggan is the BAFTA-nominated writer of the programme. They're both brilliant talkers who offer different perspectives on this story. Patrick gives us an actor’s take on receiving the storyline; playing the role convincingly and credibly; and the responsibility he felt to get it right. And Shaun, for his part, looks at the process of coming up with this journey for Dillon’s character; the importance of visibility on-screen for LGBTQ+ characters; and his experiences as a gay writer in the industry. They’re both fantastic talkers, and we really think you’ll like this episode!WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? @JamieJohnsonFCWANT TO WATCH THE JAMIE JOHNSON EPISODE? https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000kbsy WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? How good is sport at tackling homophobia when it occurs? Have things improved over the past few years? If so, how, and if they haven’t, why not? They're big questions - and ones that Dr Rachael Bullingham spends plenty of time looking at in her role as a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Gloucestershire. She’s a brilliant guest and someone we’ve wanted to have on the podcast for a little while, bringing us an academic perspective on the topics we usually discuss that we’ve not really had before. Tom's been talking to us about that; about what he's been doing during lockdown; about where things stand in terms of LGBTQ+ visibility in sport and whether things have changed since he came out; and about his wedding plans as well. We're really grateful to Tom, who was one of the first people to talk to us when we were just finding our feet - and we think you'll like him as much as we do.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @TomBosworthWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Lewis Nicholls

It's fair to say pro-wrestling is one of the more unique forms of sports entertainment out there. The villains pride themselves on being hated, the heroes do their best to get the crowd behind them - and even though the outcomes of the matches are pre-determined, they still involved real physical skill and strength from everyone involved. It's something Lewis Nicholls has loved from a young age – and now he makes his living from it, both as the on-screen general manager for the UK’s Evolution Wrestling and as an interviewer with his own social media channel, carrying out in-depth conversations with people from inside the industry. There’s loads to enjoy in this conversation – from how wrestling has welcomed him with open arms; how it has evolved to become one of the more inclusive forms of sports entertainment; what it takes to be a good ‘bad guy’ in wrestling; interviewing your heroes; and what makes a brilliant wrestling match/ moment. So, even if wrestling isn’t your thing, we recommend you stick with this one – because we think you’ll find it really, really interesting, and we’re massively grateful Lewis took the time to join us for it.
