The One with Pharrell Shaymar
If you take a look at Pharrell Shaymar’s social media feeds, you’ll see that combat sports are a huge part of his life. As a professional boxing and kickboxing coach, you’ll get tutorials on everything from throwing the perfect left hook to the importance of counter-punching.But what makes Pharrell’s story all the more remarkable is that he only really started practicing combat sports as a way to deal with the depression he was experiencing during his transition – and now, as ‘The Trans Technician’, he’s opening about his journey in the hope it’ll inspire other LGBTQ+ people to get into combat sports, and be their authentic selves. So, this is a cracking conversation with someone who has a unique story to tell – and that’s why we’re delighted to have Pharrell on the podcast. We talk about his journey when it comes to sport, his gender identity, opening up about his story, what combat sports brings to him, and so much more. It’s all part of this conversation, and we’re really grateful Pharrell took the time to join us for it. The One with David Mooney
It’s hard to find anyone more knowledgeable – or passionate – about the ins and outs of life at the Etihad than David Mooney. The broadcaster’s Blue Moon Podcast has been running since 2009, and is one of the most definitive voices on all things Manchester City - and it’s fair to say he’s had plenty to talk about over the time he’s been doing those shows! So, it was high time to get him onto our podcast to talk about his story as a broadcaster, and get some top tales from away from the mic as well.Honestly, it’s hard to know how to sum this one up – part nostalgia-fest, part podcast-geekdom, and partly an authentic and honest look at coming out – other than to say it's just a treat to listen to.Even if you don’t follow City, you will love this conversation – and we’re so grateful David took the time to join us for this. The One with Lloyd Wilson
It’s been a few weeks since Lloyd Wilson decided to share his story with the world.Alongside colleague Craig Napier, Lloyd came out as gay – and it’s fair to say life has been a bit of a whirlwind for the Scottish referee since then. Lloyd has already reffed his first few games back since sharing his story - so it really was the perfect time to get him onto the podcast to have a bit of a chat. And honestly, this is a really special episode that touches on so much.We discuss how Lloyd became comfortable with who he was, and the role his other half played in that; why football was the place he felt most comfortable being his authentic self; how he actually shared his story with the world – yeah, this one is special.Plus we talk about the pressure of refereeing, why he does it – plus a little bit of motocross and dog chat thrown in for good measure as well!WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST?: @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Georgia Elwiss
It’s shaping up to be a busy sporting summer for any number of reasons, including the second year of The Hundred competition. One of the players who’ll be hoping to take centre-stage in that is England’s Georgia Elwiss, who is representing Birmingham Phoenix in the tournament. From winning the World Cup with England in 2017 to lifting the Rachel Heyhoe-Flint Trophy with Southern Vipers, Georgia is someone who has done it all in the sport - and someone we’ve wanted to have on the podcast for a long time.So when we managed to book in this conversation, we knew it was going to be a cracker – and it doesn’t disappoint! We talk about how last year’s Hundred panned out; her love of cricket and where it came from; playing for England; why she’s willing to talk more about her sexuality now; her most memorable moments in the game – and so, so much more besides. We know you’ll love this conversation – and we’re massively grateful to Georgia for making the time to chat with us for a cracking episode of the pod. The Second One with Brad Slayer
Imagine if your job involves performing in front of a crowd of thousands, eliciting boos and cheers based on your athleticism inside a ring? And then imagine that you weren’t able to do any of that because of the pandemic. That’s exactly what British wrestler Brad Slayer – and dozens of others of UK stars – found themselves facing, so you can understand why they’re so delighted to be stepping back into the ring, in front of an audience, for a very special Pride show. It’s happening in Norwich in just a couple of weeks – and because we love wrestling on this show, we were obviously more than happy to get him onto the podcast for his second appearance on the show to tell us all about it.We talk about that pandemic era of wrestling, LGBTQ+ representation in the industry, Brad’s own journey, putting together a Pride card and so much more – and if you love wrestling, this one is a cracking chat.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? @BradSlayer @WAW_UKWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Stephen Fry
He’s a comedian, actor, writer and presenter – and at the start of May, Stephen Fry added another accolade to his CV when he was named as the next President of Marylebone Cricket Club. He described himself as ‘humbled’ and ‘honoured’ by the appointment – and to be honest, we're feeling the same emotions about having Stephen on the podcast today! But as you'd suspect, this episode doesn't disappoint. We chat about where his love of cricket came from; his most memorable moments as a fan; the honour of being named MCC president and his goals for his tenure in the post; being a gay man in cricket; opening the game up to everyone; and so, so much more. It’s a cracking conversation that we think you’ll love - because honestly, how could it be anything else?! - and we’re massively grateful to Stephen for making the time to join us for it.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST?: @stephenfry @homeofcricket WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST?: @jack_murley [email protected]

The Big Cricket Roundtable One
It’s a big day for the world of cricket – and one that requires a special podcast to go with it.Later tonight, Surrey take on Kent at The Oval in a T20 Blast match that’s been specifically designated as a game in support of the club’s official LGBTQ+ supporters group Proud Surrey. And over at Lords, Middlesex face Somerset in their T20 game, where LGBTQ+ team Graces will be applauding the teams out in a guard of honour, with Pride and inclusivity messaging on screens around the ground as well. And really, that was all the excuse we needed to put together a special podcast, all about being LGBTQ+ in cricket and the significance of inclusion in the sport. So, up first, we’re taking you on a trip to Taunton – where I went earlier this week during England’s Test Match with South Africa to speak with World Cup winner and England international Georgia Elwiss, Hen Cowen from the ECB, and Somerset CEO Gordon Hollins from Somerset County Cricket Club about the importance of inclusivity in the game. And then, we’re catching up on Zoom with Sam Schofield from Proud Surrey to talk about the significance of their game with Kent. So, a whopper of an episode with a whole load of great guests – talking all about cricket! The One with Dan Jervis
In the small Welsh village of Resolven where Dan Jervis grew up, it was rugby that ruled the roost. But from the moment that Dan’s grandparents took him to the local pool, it was clear that swimming was the sport for him.Dan dreamed of being an Olympian – and last year, he made that happen at the Games in Tokyo, when he finished 5th in the 1500 metres freestyle final in his debut Olympics. Throw in a pair of Commonwealth medals in Glasgow and the Gold Coast respectively, and you can see why Dan is feeling so upbeat heading into next month’s Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. But before then, Dan wanted to open up publicly for the first time about the fact he’s gay – so when he dropped us a message, asking to come on the pod for a chat, we were delighted to have him on. As always, this isn’t Dan’s ‘coming out’ story – as his friends and his family have known for a little while now. But it is the first time Dan has shared his story with the wider world – and in doing so, he hopes to be the role-model that he perhaps didn’t see growing up.And so, that’s what this conversation is all about – Dan’s journey in the pool, training in a pandemic, that first Olympics experience, understanding his own sexuality, his faith, and why now is the right time to share his story. The One with Ali Donnelly
If you know anything about women’s rugby, you’ll know who Ali Donnelly is.A player, a coach, a journalist, a campaigner and the founder of the legendary Scrum Queens website, she’s dedicated more hours than most of us have in the day to promoting the women’s game. And with a book coming out shortly, now was the perfect time to get Ali onto the podcast to talk about her remarkable sporting story. We talk about everything, from how she got into the game to the efforts she’s gone to in order to get the sport the platform it deserves – as well as the process of writing a book, finding her wife through the game, and screaming herself hoarse at the Premiership Final. It’s a cracking chat with a great guest, and we think you’ll really like it. The Second One with Anthony Bowens
It’s been more than three years since we last had Anthony Bowens on the podcast. And it’s fair to say that a lot has changed in the time since then. The professional wrestler signed with All Elite Wrestling, where he’s been competing against some of his idols on national television and, alongside partner Max Caster, has become part of one of the most popular tag-teams in the company as one half of The Acclaimed. So, it was high time to get Anthony back onto the show for a chat about the whirlwind that his life has been in the time since we last sat down together. We talk performing in a pandemic to no crowds, finding a dynamic that works as a tag-team, stepping into the ring with the person who inspired Anthony to get into wrestling, his prominence as an LGBTQ+ performer in wrestling, his goals when he returns from injury and lots, lots more.If you love wrestling, it’s a cracking episode that we think you’ll love – and we’re massively grateful for Anthony making the time.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? @Bowens_Official @AEW

The One with Priscilla, Queen of the Ring
Ollie Burness always dreamed of making it as a professional wrestler, but probably never imagined that he’d do it as a spandex-wearing, lip-syncing, butt-kicking drag queen. But after getting frustrated with traditional definitions of masculinity and sexuality in the industry, he came up with Priscilla – a self-proclaimed Queen of the Ring and exotic diva. And now, Priscilla is one of the driving forces behind PCW’s Pride of the Ring event in Blackpool this month, which’ll bring together a whole load of LGBTQ+ talent from the British wrestling scene for what is a UK first. So, it seemed the perfect time to get Ollie aka Priscilla onto the show to talk about his journey, inside and outside the ring. From breaking into the business to the changing portrayal of the LGBTQ+ community in the industry to this landmark event, it’s a cracking episode that we think you’ll really enjoy, even if you’re not a wrestling fan!WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? @PriscillaQOTRWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Lewis Gibson
Lewis Gibson grew up in a sporty family, but it wasn’t long before he realised that football wasn’t for him.In fact, a chance viewing of ‘Dancing on Ice’ on ITV opened up his eyes to a whole world that he hadn’t seen before, and set him off on a journey that led all the way to this year’s Winter Olympics in China. We’ve wanted to have Lewis on the podcast for a while – and we have to tell you, this episode doesn’t disappoint at all. In fact, it’s an absolute cracker! We talk about his journey in sport; his transition into ice dance; the music and routines; his partnership with Lilah Fear; his personal journey; what he nicked from the Olympic village – and so, so much more. The One about Jake Daniels
It’s been a twenty-four hour period that none of us will ever forget. After Jake Daniels’ history-making announcement on Monday, we’ve put together a special episode looking at the significance of the Blackpool striker’s decision to open up about his sexuality. We bring you the powerful reaction of LGBTQ+ fans, and take you behind-the-scenes to show how the story has played out over the past twenty-four hours - and how we've tried to cover it. It’s an open, honest and emotional episode, unlike any we’ve done over our four-year existence. We really hope you enjoy it.WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Jordan Robinson
Jordan Robinson has always had sport in his life.Whether it’s following Newcastle United as a season ticket holder, playing and coaching rugby or, in his current role, as the general manager of Newcastle Thunder, it’s been an ever-present. Jordan has also known he was gay for a long time – but it was only in lockdown that he decided that he was ready to start the process of opening up to his family and close friends about his story. And after hearing people like Super League referee James Child share their story on this podcast, he decided to get in touch to ask if he could talk about his own journey as well, in the hope it would help other people. So that’s what this episode is all about – Jordan’s love of sport, the ups-and-downs of life as a Newcastle United fan, what an average day (if there is such a thing) in the life of a general manager is like, the impact of the pandemic, his own sexuality, speaking out and being visible, and so much more besides. It’s a cracking episode, and we – as always – are massively grateful that Jordan has trusted us to tell his story for the first time.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST?: @ThunderRugby

The One with Chris Kinney
When Chris Kinney represented Team USA in the bobsled at the 2018 Winter Olympics, it was the culmination of years and years of hard work and dedication. But it also represented a turning point in his own life, where he finally felt able to publicly embrace the whole person that he was.Up until that point, he had been on a journey - not just with his sexuality, but with his wider identity and where he belonged in the world. And, as you’ll hear in this fascinating conversation, it wasn’t always an easy journey – but one that, ultimately, had the happiest of endings. We talk about all of that and more in this cracking episode – where Chris got his love of sport; making the transition from track to the bobsled; becoming an Olympian; his own journey with his sexuality; coming out; fitting in; and why he’s one of the biggest Friends fans going today!WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @kai_kun24 on InstagramWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Osian Jones
Osian Jones smashed a record that stood for more than thirty years when he broke the Welsh men’s hammer record in 2017.Throw in two Commonwealth Games – including a seventh-place finish on Australia’s Gold Coast in 2018 – and you can see why the Welshman is such a formidable competitor in the world of athletics. Osian is also a fan of the podcast – so when he reached out to us, saying he’d been listening for a while and wanted to share his own journey on the show, we were absolutely up for having him on for a chat. It’s the first time Osian has spoken publicly about his sexuality, and it always means a lot when someone trusts us to tell their story for the first time. And, as always, this is a cracking chat – as Osian shares where his love of the hammer came from, training in lockdown, his goals for the upcoming season, the journey he’s been on when it comes to understanding his own sexuality, and why he wants to the LGBTQ+ community to know he’s a part of it.We're so grateful to Osian for reaching out, and we really think you'll like this episode. The One with Matthew Mitcham
Matthew Mitcham will always have a place in sporting history. In 2008, the Australian became the first out gay man to win an Olympic gold medal when he triumphed in the diving at the Beijing Olympics – and set a new Olympic record in the process. It marked the high-point of a remarkable sporting comeback for Matthew, who had only returned to diving fifteen months before after falling out of love with a sport where he felt he couldn’t be his authentic self. That theme of authenticity is something that comes up time and time again during our chat with Matthew – which, we promise, is an absolute cracker. We talk about Matthew’s diving career; leaving the sport and returning to it (including what changed that made him want to come back); using his platform to help others; inclusivity; authenticity – and where his medal is at the moment.Matthew is someone we’ve wanted to have on the podcast from pretty much the moment it started, and we’re grateful we’ve finally made it happen. It doesn’t disappoint. The One with Riley Parks
We’re going to back to the grassroots and crossing the Atlantic today for an episode with someone who has a story that many people can relate to. A promising young athlete, Riley Parks raced at a college level – and now competes as a member of the US Navy. He does road-races for fun – and when he’s not doing that, it’s skiing that is his passion. He’s also a regular listener to the podcast – and when he reached out to ask to come on for a chat, that was something we definitely were up for.And while he may not be a known name, we definitely thought it was worthwhile hearing from a grassroots athlete about his experiences in the world of sport – and as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. So, we talk about his love of sport; his coming out story; his journey – all the usual stuff you’d expect – as well as life in the military, and whether anyone can learn how to ski. It’s a different sort of episode but one we think you’re going to like, and we’re really grateful to Riley for reaching out for a chat. Izzy Cerullo is someone with a sporting CV to envy. Born in the United States to Brazilian parents, the rugby star is a double-Olympian, a Pan-American Games bronze medallist, a five-time South American champion and the first Brazilian to become an ambassador for the Athlete Ally charity. And if you didn’t know any of that, you’ll almost certainly have seen the moment when Izzy’s now-wife Marjorie proposed to her following the Olympics in Rio. After retiring, Izzy has become an ambassador for the Gay Games, and is now a member of the Organising Committee for the Olympics and Paralympics in Los Angeles in 2028. So, this is a cracking conversation with someone we’ve wanted to have on the podcast for a long time, where we talk about all of that and more – from the pride of pulling on your country’s jersey to crowdfunding your Olympic journey, to visibility, retirement, finding a new career… and yes, that proposal! The One with Nat Sciver and Katherine Brunt
EWe’re taking you to New Zealand on the podcast today - where England are about to begin their campaign to retain the Women’s World Cup which they won in that thrilling final with India at Lords back in 2017.And if they do manage to claim back-to-back titles, two of the main reasons will be Katherine Brunt and Nat Sciver – who, in addition to being team-mates, announced their engagement in October, 2019.We’ve wanted to have them both on the podcast for a long time, so we’re delighted that we’ve managed to make it happen - and boy, does this conversation deliver. The One with Bruce Mouat
If you watched even a few minutes of the Winter Olympics in Beijing, you’ll know who Bruce Mouat is.And on the off-chance you've been living under a rock and don't know the name, then you'll certainly know the hat! The Scot skipped Team GB’s men to silver in China last month and then – just a few hours after earning Britain their first medal of the Games – was chosen to be the flag-bearer at the closing ceremony. Throw in a clutch of World and European medals, and you can see why we were so keen to get him on the podcast – and after a whirlwind return from the Olympics that's included appearances at Murrayfield and a chance encounter with Judge Rinder, we’ve managed to make it happen. This whole conversation is one you’ve been clamouring for, and it absolutely delivers – as we discuss everything from the Games to Bruce’s coming out story to being inspired by Tom Daley to be his authentic self in sport. And the hat. The One with Pride In Tennis
It seems like more and more networks are springing up in sport to support the LGBTQ+ community – and earlier this month, we got another one.At the LTA’s National Tennis Centre in Roehampton, ‘Pride in Tennis’ was launched – with the aim of making the sport a place where everyone feels welcome, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Ryan Watson founded the South London Smashers; Ian Pearson-Brown founded Pride in Tennis; and David Hardman is the Inclusion Development Manager at the LTA. They were all at the launch, and all three join us for this episode of the podcast to talk about all things tennis–related. From their own journeys in the sport, to the founding of the network, to what the sport needs to do to make people feel welcome in it - yes, this really is a cracking episode! It’s always great to mark the start of a new network, and we’re really grateful that Ryan, Ian and David were able to join us on the show this week. The One with Thomas Beattie
When Josh Cavallo was thinking about coming out last year, there was one man he turned to for advice. After all, Thomas Beattie was one of just a handful of people who knew how Josh would be feeling, after sharing his own coming out story with the world a little over a year earlier. The ex-Hull City youth player had the chance to play professionally in Scotland with Kilmarnock, and ended up making it as a pro in Canada and Asia before hanging up his boots as the result of a serious head injury. He says he wants to turn the pain he felt being a gay man in football, unable to share his identity, into his purpose – and we’re delighted we’ve finally been able to get Thomas onto the podcast for a real cracker of an episode. We dot around across all sorts of topics in this episode – being scouted; his time in the game; finding himself and coming out; the support he provides to others; and why Thomas thinks it’s so important for people in the game to be open and honest about who they are. We’re delighted we’ve been able to make this one happen, and we really think you’re going to like it!WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @IamTomBeattieWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Ryan Russell
It’s no surprise that Ryan Russell was smiling when we recorded this conversation. After all, it’s Super Bowl season – and with just days to go until the Los Angeles Rams face the Cincinatti Bengals inside the cavernous SoFi Stadium, it’s one of his favourite times of year. The defensive end had spells with the Dallas Cowboys, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Buffalo Bills, lining up against the likes of Tom Brady, Eli Manning and more. And in August, 2019, he came out in an interview with ESPN as the first active NFL player to talk publicly about their bisexuality. So, since football is in the air – and since Ryan is someone we’ve wanted to have on for ages! – it made perfect sense to sit down and have this chat now, and it’s a brilliant one.We talk about how he was discovered in the sport; how it feels to be drafted; playing against all-time greats; his own personal journey; Carl Nassib; the Super Bowl; the book Russ is writing, and loads more. Kirsty Gilmour was barely out of school when she went to her first Commonwealth Games in Delhi. The Scottish badminton star first picked up a racquet at the age of four and has gone on to accomplish extraordinary things in the sport – including a silver medal at her home Commonwealth Games in the singles in 2014, and a bronze four years later on the Gold Coast in Australia.Factor in two Olympic Games in Rio and Tokyo respectively, and multiple medals at a European level as well – and you can see why Gilmour has been a fixture in the world rankings for such a long time. So, we were delighted when the Scot agreed to sit down for a chat with us about her life, career and personal journey – and this episode turned out to be an absolute joy. From getting her start in the sport to her Commonwealth Games experiences to opening up about her sexuality, this is just a lovely, lovely conversation that we think you’re going to love – and we’re so grateful Kirsty was able to take the time to join us for it.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @KirstyGilmourrWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE SHOW? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Sam Lansdale
Sam Lansdale has always had a passion for getting people into football.A director and trustee with Sevenoaks Town, he’s volunteered as a referee, played as a teenager - and spent years coaching at a youth-level as well. He really is dedicated to making the beautiful game a place where everyone feels welcome - but to do that, Sam had to first feel comfortable in himself, and be open with the footballing world about his sexuality too. So, when he reached out to us about whether we’d fancy a chat with him about his experiences as a gay man in football, the only obvious answer was ‘yes’ – and this is a fascinating, powerful and raw conversation with a really interesting guy.We talk about his journey, both on and off the pitch – and why being his authentic self was such a crucial part of his own footballing story in an episode we think you’ll love. It’s genuine, authentic and a bit longer than we’d normally go - but we make no apologies for that, and when you hear this conversation, we think you'll understand why. We’re really grateful to Sam for sharing his truth in such a powerful way – and we think you’ll love this conversation. WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @SamLansdale @SevenoaksTownFC

The One with Tammy Parlour
Tammy Parlour’s love of sport really came about when she moved to the United States. The martial art of Hapkido offered her a way to feel like she belonged in a new country – and once she tried it, she was hooked. She has forty years of experience in the discipline under her belt as a student, teacher and coach – and in 2012, in the wake of the London Olympics, she was inspired to co-found the Women’s Sport Trust. The charity – which Tammy is the CEO of - works to raise the profile and impact of women’s sport and, over the past ten years, has helped to reshape the sporting landscape. So, you can imagine how excited we were to get the chance to speak with Tammy, and this episode doesn’t disappoint. We talk about discovering Hapkido and the difference it made in her life; the different skills that are needed when it comes to teaching the martial art; the impact London 2012 had on her life; the early days and growth of the Women’s Sport Trust; her own personal journey – and so, so much more. It’s a cracking conversation with a great guest that we really loved, and we think you will as well!WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST?@Tammy_Parlour @WomenSportTrust WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Matt Cecchin
EThere aren’t many referees who end their career with a guard of honour. But that’s exactly what was given to Matt Cecchin after he finished his final NRL match in September – and brought the curtain down on a top-flight career that spanned more than 350 games. The Australian had officiated at the highest level since the early 2000s, refereeing at the World Cup as well as in the Four Nations, while also taking charge of four State of Origin games and three NRL Grand Finals. He also became one of the most high profile men in Australian sport to come out as gay, when he opened up publicly about his sexuality in 2012. So, a cracking guest to kick off 2022 on the podcast – and there’s so much brilliant stuff in this conversation with Matt.We talk about how he got into refereeing; getting his break at an elite level; some of his most memorable moments in the game, and dealing with pressure; coming out in his personal life and publicly; the fear he felt after sharing his story; being a role-model for the LGBTQ+ community in rugby; and decided to hang up his boots. It’s a cracking conversation with someone we’re really fortunate to have had the chance to chat to, and we’re really grateful Matt took the time to join us.WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with The Best Bits of 2021 (July-December)
It’s time to bring the curtain down on 2021 with the second part of our ‘Year in Review’ special, as we remind ourselves of some of the brilliant guests who have joined us on the podcast between July and December. There’s lots of topics on the agenda in this one – coming out in professional football; representation of the LGBTQ+ community in wrestling; winning an Olympic gold medal; standing up as an ally in Formula 1; and so, so much more. It’s all in this episode, as well as much more – as we wrap up the biggest year we’ve ever had on this podcast. And don’t worry – we’ve already got loads of cracking guests set for 2022 as well, and we can't wait to bring them to you in the new year. The One with The Best Bits of 2021 (January - June)
It’s been a bumper year on the BBC’s LGBT Sport Podcast, with more big guests than ever before. So, to wrap up 2021, we’re taking a trip down memory lane for our next two episodes to remember some of the stars who have joined us over the past twelve months – and the brilliant stories they’ve shared.Today’s guests all joined us between January and June - where we talked about everything from changing attitudes towards HIV; coming out as bisexual in rugby; making it as a professional footballer in Mexico; challenging stereotypes in surfing; finding a sport where you fit; and so much more. It’s been great to remind ourselves of the brilliant stories that our top guests have shared with us in 2021 – and don’t forget, our second ‘Best of’ episode drops next week with some of the stories that stuck with us from July through to December.WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Jake Williamson
It’s fair to say Jake Williamson has loved sport for as long as he can remember. As a kid, he tried a bit of everything – but it was skiing, running and football that really stood out from the pack.In fact, he was good enough to pursue a career at a professional level, trialling at Inverness Caledonian Thistle and travelling to Europe where he was offered a contract to play football full-time in Poland. And while that dream didn’t quite work out, he still plays at a decent level now and, as well as doing personal training, is also a season ticket holder at Chelsea. But for a long time, Jake didn’t think it was possible to be all those things – and to be gay as well. So, he pushed the feelings he had for men down, and it was only when he met his partner Paul that he realised he was ready to tell his friends and family about his sexuality. Now, he’s sharing his story with us on this podcast, in the hope that it can help others who may be in the same situation. This is a cracking conversation, it really is – on Jake’s love of the beautiful game; those experiences in Poland and Scotland; his love of staying active; how his relationship helped him gain the confidence to share his story; the importance of role-models and language; and so much more. It’s all here in an open, honest and fascinating chat that we really think you’ll like. The One with Pride of Irons
It seems odd for the founder of West Ham’s LGBTQ+ supporters group to come from family containing plenty of Spurs fans – but that’s exactly what happened with Jim Dolan. In fact, that seems to be a running theme amongst the folks at Pride Of Irons – because Jim’s co-chair Jo Bailey also has a smattering of Spurs fans in her family (although as you’ll hear from the recording, not the huge amount I may have implied!). Either way, both Jim and Jo ended up as passionate West Ham fans – and this is an absolutely cracking episode that we think you're going to love about their respective journeys in football, and the growth of Pride of Irons. There’s so much good stuff on tap for this one – the passion and highs-and-lows of following your team; visibility in football; why Jim started tweeting about being an LGBTQ+ West Ham fan and how that led to Pride of Irons; how Jo discovered it and what it mean to her; being embraced by your club; West Ham’s season so far and so much more. It’s honestly a brilliant chat that we really think you’ll like it – and we’re hugely grateful to Jim and Jo for taking the time. The One on the Commonwealth Sport Pride Network
‘The network is just the start’.That’s the message from Katie Sadleir – the former Commonwealth Games swimmer and current CEO of the Commonwealth Games Federation – on the day that the Federation launches the Commonwealth Sport Pride Network. The group will champion LGBTQ+ inclusion across the Commonwealth sport movement, and aims to bring together LGBTQ+ athletes, coaches, organisers and allies to promote visibility and awareness. But how easy is that to achieve – especially when LGBTQ+ people are still criminalised or marginalised in scores of countries that will be part of the Games in Birmingham next year? We’re delighted that Katie is here on the podcast to tell us more about it – and she’s not here alone either, as Jamaican swimming star Michael Gunning returns to the podcast to tell us about his involvement in helping the network to come about. It’s a fascinating, newsworthy conversation with two great guests – and we’re grateful they both took the time to join us for it.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? @KSadleir @MichaelGunning1 @TheCGF

The One with Cameron Kirton
If you’ve enjoyed any of the content that Manchester City has put out over the past few years, there’s a good chance that Cameron Kirton is behind it in some way. He’s a video producer with the club – so has a hand in creating bucketloads of the content that you’ll have seen everywhere from the club’s website to its YouTube channels.Basically, he helps take us to the places where we just aren’t able to go – and it’s fair to say he absolutely loves his job! So, it’s brilliant to be able to get Cameron onto the podcast to talk about his life and his story – including how he found himself in a role that so many people will be very, very jealous of.This is a fascinating conversation – as Cameron talks about the unlikely way he was introduced to football; taking a punt on himself to pursue something he loves; adapting to the ever-changing media landscape; being a gay man in professional football; becoming a father and so much more. This is a cracking episode that we think you’re going to love – and we’re really grateful Cameron took the time to join us. The One with Sarah-Jane Perry
As a child, Sarah-Jane Perry played pretty much every sport going.Rounders, tennis, athletics, hockey – they were all part of her life, but it was squash that she really fell in love with. In 2011, just before finishing university, Sarah-Jane decided to turn professional – and what a decade it’s been in the ten years since then!Ranked Number 6 in the world, she’s one of the world’s leading squash players – with a Commonwealth Games silver medal and a 2014 World Team Championship gold amongst her many, many accolades. So, you can see why we were so delighted to have Sarah-Jane on the podcast – and this episode really delivers. There’s all sorts of things that come up in this cracking conversation – how Sarah-Jane became a professional and the road to taking that decision; some of her remarkable sporting highs; her own personal journey and being inspired by the likes of Billie Jean King; why visibility is so important; and her aims for next year’s Commonwealth Games, which happen to be right on her doorstep! We really loved this episode – and we think you will as well.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @SJPerry15WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Ian Pearson-Brown
Ian Pearson-Brown was brought up with Newcastle United in his blood. He was there for the club’s remarkable rise up through the leagues - and has followed them, home and away, from the heyday of Kevin Keegan’s time in charge to the turbulence of the Mike Ashley era. Like many LGBTQ+ people, he struggled with his sexuality – and in his own words, he became ‘the most homophobic gay man you’d ever meet’, as he hid the fact he was gay while sometimes even joining in with discriminatory chants on the terraces. So, to say that a young Ian would have been surprised to see himself as co-chair of United with Pride – Newcastle United’s LGBTQ+ supporters group – would be a massive understatement! And speaking of understatements, it's fair to say that neither Ian nor United with Pride have had the easiest of times since the Saudi Arabia-backed takeover of Newcastle United was confirmed last month. So, there’s plenty for us to get into in this episode – from United with Pride’s decision to welcome and work with the new owners; what might make them reconsider that decision; the social media abuse they’ve received over the past few weeks; Ian’s own love of Newcastle United; his own personal journey; some of his most memorable moments as a fan; and so much more. It’s all in an episode that's sure to get people talking – and we’re grateful that Ian has taken the time to join us for it.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? @ianpearsonsinrg @utdwithprideWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with the European Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation
It was founded in 1989 by a group of clubs in Germany and the Netherlands. And in the three decades that have passed since then, the European Gay and Lesbian Sport Federation has grown into a body that represents more than 22,000 members from right across the continent. The goal is simple – to represent all athletes in Europe, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, and to help administer the EuroGames event as well. Sarah Townsend and Hugh Torrance are the co-presidents of the EGLSF, and are two cracking guests to have on the show to tell us all about the Federation's work. We chat about their respective journeys in sport; how they got involved with the EGLSF ; running EuroGames; keeping going during COVID; the work being done by EGLSF; and so much more. Two brilliant guests on one superb episode – and we think you’re really going to like it.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? @EGLSFWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Helen and Kate Richardson-Walsh
Helen and Kate Richardson-Walsh are British sporting superstars. They're both double Olympic medal-winning hockey players, taking bronze at London 2012 and then gold in a penalty shootout with the Netherlands at the 2016 Olympics in Rio in one of the most iconic moments of the Games. Kate captained the side for thirteen years – and we really don’t have the space to fully document two careers that spanned four Olympic Games, alongside bundles of medals at both a European and Commonwealth level as well! Now, they’ve written a fascinating book called ‘Winning Together’, which gives the inside story of what it takes to build high-performing teams. The book, and this conversation, is a fascinating insight into the drive, sacrifice and effort that it takes to win an Olympic gold medal – and is gritty, frank and, at times, very emotional. We also talk about the importance of LGBTQ+ visibility, their own personal journeys – and the awkwardness of trying your hand at stand-up comedy! This is a fascinating chat with two bona fide British sporting legends – and we’re grateful to Helen and Kate for making the time to join us. WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? The One with Max Lindsay
EMax Lindsay went to his first Southampton game when he was just three years old.It was at The Dell – and he missed Saints’ last-minute equaliser because he needed the loo!But in spite of that, the experience got Max hooked on football – and now, he’s one of the co-founders of the club’s ‘Rainbow Saints’ inclusive supporters group. It started earlier this year – and, since Max’s day-job happened to put him in Cornwall, we thought it was only right to get us in the podcast to talk about how it all came about. This is a brilliant conversation, looking at everything from developing a love of football to handling abuse on the terraces to taking a leap and starting something new – and we really think you’re going to like it.WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUESTS? @Rainbow_Saints @maxlindsay @wftjm89 (Will Morgan) https://rainbow-saints.mailchimpsites.comWANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]

The One with Helen Hardy
Helen Hardy’s obsession with football started at the same time as Euro ’96 – and continued throughout her childhood, as she’d go along to St James’ Park to watch Newcastle United in action. She played at primary school and intended to keep going until – as for so many girls – the game was taken away from her at secondary school, and just staying involved with football became so much harder, for no reason whatsoever. Her determination to get back into football – and to allow other women to do the same – is what led Helen to found Manchester Laces – the city’s first-ever inclusive women’s and non-binary football club. And honestly, this conversation is an absolute joy with someone who lives and breathes the beautiful game. From Helen’s own experiences growing up to the ethos behind the Laces, just sit back and listen to a fantastic guest with a brilliant, brilliant story to tell. The One with David Gough
It’s hard to remember a time when football wasn’t in David Gough’s life. We’re talking GAA – which David first started playing when he was just a child in Ireland. Soon, he got into refereeing – and since then, he hasn’t looked back.As one of the top officials in Gaelic football, he’s done everything there is to do in the sport – and he also made headlines when he opened up about the fact he’s gay. We’ve wanted to have David on the podcast for a long time – and this episode really delivers with a truly brilliant guest. There’s so much we talk about – finding sport as a youngster; David’s refereeing journey; the pressures that come with elite officiating; deciding to open up about his sexuality and what happened afterwards; and how he switches off. Honestly, this is a cracker – and we’re so glad David took the time to join us. WANT TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT OUR GUEST? @goughd4WANT TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PODCAST? @jack_murley [email protected]
