S1 Ep 282Boron!...actually never mind, not boron.
Ok, well…. Today’s episode is a bit unique…. The intention was to discuss the important benefits of a trace mineral called boron. It is an important mineral, make no mistake. But, as we started recording, we got bored. Turns out talking about boron is kind of boring! S1 Ep 279What We Don't Know About Hormones - Part 3
Genova’s Endo+ Profile is the first of its kind in hormonal health, offering the unique ability to test saliva, blood, and urine simultaneously. This flexibility lets providers create tailored hormonal profiles that reveal insights and connections between sex hormones, thyroid function, adrenal health, melatonin rhythms, and estrogen metabolism. While creating this product, we spent years scouring the research for the most up-to-date clinical information. Some of what we found, or more importantly didn’t find, calls into question what gets repeated in the echo chambers of functional medicine. Today is part 3 of our series where we challenge common doctrine in hormone testing. It’s good to be humble, take a fresh look at dogmatic concepts, and rethink what we thought we knew. S1 Ep 278Red Meat & Heart Disease [Rebroadcast]
Foods come in and out of favor all the time. Eggs are good for you… no wait, they are bad… nope, good again – let’s not even discuss butter! There are many disease correlations related to specific foods and literature continues to evolve. One such focus is on red meat and its correlation to cardiovascular disease. But why? Is all red meat bad? Can you eat red meat and not increase heart disease risk? What about it should cause concern? Interestingly, the answer lies in the microbiome’s ability to metabolize the carnitine in red meat into a metabolite called trimethylamine (TMA). What happens from there is the key! S1 Ep 274What We Don't Know About Hormones - Part 2
Genova’s new Endo+ Profile is the first of its kind in hormonal health, offering the unique ability to test saliva, blood, and urine simultaneously. Today is part 2 of our series where we challenge common doctrine in hormone testing. It’s good to be humble, take a fresh look at dogmatic concepts, and rethink what we thought we knew. Today on The Lab Report: 3:40 Reference ranges – population vs. healthy cohort 8:15 Reference ranges - comparing HRT dosages vs. actual symptoms 10:10 Making sense of urine hormone testing 12:50 Circulating hormone levels vs. tissue effects 18:15 Sex hormone binding globulin vs. free testosterone 20:15 Question of the Day What are the logistics of customizing the Endo+? S1 Ep 273What We Don't Know About Hormones
Hormones are complicated! The body makes dozens of hormones that influence each other. Fine-tuning that full hormonal symphony can lead to significant symptom improvement and well-being. Genova’s testing can help and the new Endo+ Profile is a great place to start. With this latest product upgrade, we’ve spent almost 2 years scouring the literature for the most up-to-date clinical information to help guide clinicians. However, while we were knee-deep in research and literature, we found ourselves with conflicting messaging and realized the echo chamber in personalized medicine might need to be re-examined. In today’s episode, we begin to challenge a few concepts in hormonal testing. Sometimes it’s good to be humble, take a fresh look at dogmatic concepts, and rethink what we thought we knew. Today on The Lab Report: 3:50 Endo+ Support Guide and literature diving 6:10 Salivary hormones – Why? How? S1 Ep 266Inflammation Signals - Patti & Michael Vamp on PAMPs, DAMPs, & LAMPs
The immune system works tirelessly to maintain health and well-being. This formidable defense mechanism is comprised of a vast array of cells, tissues, proteins, and molecules that work together to identify and neutralize foreign invaders. The inflammation that ensues can be recognized by redness, pain, swelling, and heat. In order for this process to take place, the body needs to be able to identify what is ‘friend or foe’. But how? There are certain molecular patterns that our immune system recognizes as part of this surveillance and recognition. Some patterns are associated with pathogens - “pathogen-associated molecular patterns” (PAMPs). Others are associated with damaged cells (DAMPs) or lifestyle choices (LAMPs). In today’s episode, we do a quick refresher on adaptive and innate immunity. We also discuss some signaling molecules that trigger the inflammatory cascade – PAMPs, DAMPs, and LAMPs. Today on The Lab Report: 3:40 Break it down – innate vs. adaptive immunity 6:40 Pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs), Pattern Recognition Receptors (PRRs) 10:25 Sterile inflammation: damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) 14:30 Lifestyle-associated molecular patterns (LAMPs) & chronic inflammation 18:25 Question of the Day How do we turn off the LAMPs? S1 Ep 264Nonpathogenic Parasites? [Rebroadcast]
The topic of intestinal parasites and their prevalence is hotly debated in functional medicine. Furthermore, the increasing trend of people performing a ‘parasite cleanse’ of the GI tract can be dangerous. Parasites are diagnosed in the stool using microscopy, direct exam, and PCR – but even then, not all parasites should be treated. Some can cause significant illness, yet others are not invasive, self-limiting, and considered nonpathogenic. S1 Ep 259Dr. Joe Feuerstein - The Incredible Cannabinoid System
When people hear the word ‘cannabinoid’, what usually comes to mind is marijuana (also known as cannabis) or CBD oil (cannabidiol). But did you know, the body creates its own natural cannabinoids using the endocannabinoid system? This endocannabinoid system is a mysterious and complex interplay of chemical messengers throughout the brain and body which in essence contributes to our body’s homeostasis. It regulates a broad array of physiological processes including pain, mood, sleep, inflammation, appetite, and more. Rather than relying on marijuana or CBD products, Dr. Joe Feuerstein teaches that there are ways to boost the endocannabinoid system naturally. As a nationally recognized and award-winning physician and researcher in the field of botanical medicine and nutrition, Dr. Joe has co-written a best-selling book on how to do just that. Today Dr. Joe Feuerstein tells us what the endocannabinoid system is and why you should care. He also outlines various herbal and natural ways to boost the endocannabinoid system for optimal health. S1 Ep 258Hunger Hormones - Patti & Michael Talk Leptin and Adipose Tissue
Many of us think of adipose tissue as just a place to store excess fat to be used for energy. However, adipose tissue is very biologically active and secretes some important hormones and mediators called adipokines. These messengers help regulate glucose and lipid metabolism, control hunger, and affect insulin levels. That being said, ALL of our hormones work together like a symphony – cortisol, thyroid hormones, sex hormones, and don’t forget the adipokines. In today’s episode, we discuss important bioactive messengers created by our fat tissue (leptin and adiponectin), how they affect us systemically, and strategies to optimize them. Today on The Lab Report: 3:40 Adipose tissue, adipokines, and types of fat 7:40 What are adipokines? 10:25 Adiponectin does great things 13:00 How to increase adiponectin 14:20 Better Know a Biomarker – Leptin! 17:40 Obesity and leptin resistance 19:25 Treating leptin resistance 21:35 Leptin vs. ghrelin 23:15 Adiponectin/leptin ratio Subscribe, Rate, & Review The Lab Report Thanks for tuning in to this week’s episode of The Lab Report, presented by Genova Diagnostics, with your hosts Michael Chapman and Patti Devers. S1 Ep 257Microbiome Diversity [Rebroadcast]
The commensal bacteria in the gut microbiome are responsible for so many important functions. Their influence is far-reaching as it relates to overall health. Research shows us that the more diverse that community of bacteria is, the more beneficial it is to systemic health. But what does diversity mean and how do we measure it? There are many calculations used when it comes to diversity of the microbiome, and they can sometimes give differing information. It’s important to understand what’s being measured in order to clinically correlate the result. In today’s episode, we discuss the industry standard Shannon Diversity Index as measured on Genova’s brand new Microbiomix profile. S1 Ep 249Nonpathogenic Parasites?
The topic of intestinal parasites and their prevalence is hotly debated in functional medicine. Furthermore, the increasing trend of people performing a ‘parasite cleanse’ of the GI tract can be dangerous. Parasites are diagnosed in the stool using microscopy, direct exam, and PCR – but even then, not all parasites should be treated. Some can cause significant illness, yet others are not invasive, self-limiting, and considered nonpathogenic. In today's episode, we give a refresher course on gut parasites, discuss different ways to assess them, and introduce the topic of nonpathogenic parasites that don’t need to be treated. Today on The Lab Report: 3:50 Prevalence and transmission of parasites 6:45 What is a parasite? Are there nonpathogenic parasites? 8:10 3 main classes of parasites 10:20 Detecting parasites in the stool 13:10 Nonpathogenic parasites Chilomastix mesnili, Endolimax nana, Entamoeba coli, Entamoeba dispar, Entamoeba hartmanni, Entamoeba polecki, Iodamoeba buetschlii 16:50 Potentially pathogenic parasites 19:25 Question of the Day Why doesn’t Genova offer sensitivities for parasites on the GI Effects? S1 Ep 248Methane & The Microbiome
Methane is often in the news as a greenhouse gas, but guess what? Your gut microbiome also makes it. Specific organisms called methanogens are responsible for the production of methane in the GI tract. High levels of methane can locally affect gut motility and contribute to constipation. In addition to constipation, methane affects gut immunity and has some interesting systemic implications. In today's episode, we talk about the effects of methane production in the GI tract, various ways to assess it, and what you can do to treat it when levels get too high. Today on The Lab Report: 2:45 Glory and Shade 5:20 Gas and the microbiome 6:30 Archaea vs. bacteria 8:30 Cows and methane 9:15 Methanogenesis in the GI tract and disease associations 12:15 Breath testing and IMO 14:40 Methane Dysbiosis on GI Effects 18:35 Whole-genome sequencing with Microbiomix 19:40 Treating high methane 22:45. S1 Ep 244Patti & Michael Put the Chrome in Chromatography [Rebroadcast]
Here at Genova, we are incredibly proud of the high standards set by our laboratory director and the brilliant minds that work in the lab to keep things running smoothly. As clinicians, and consumers, many of us don’t give the inner workings of the lab a second thought. We take for granted that samples are sent, results are generated, and we can clinically act on those findings. Most of our profiles rely on several different laboratory methodologies to put the whole story together. One of those methods is called Chromatography – and clinicians don’t fully understand what that actually means. In today’s episode, we call on our friend Ashley Gibbon – one of the smartest minds in laboratory science – to help us understand what chromatography is and why it is so vital to Genova testing. Today on The Lab Report: · 7:10 Ashley Gibbon defines chromatography · 14:15 Organic acids and Separation science · 16:15 The instrument – columns, beads, mobile and stationary phases · 19:25 Detectors and mass spectrometry · 23:15 Liquid vs. Gas chromatography · 26:00 Maintaining the beads to preserve peaks · 28:05 Quadrupoles, Sensitivity and specificity of detectors, and quantification · 31:00 Area under the curve, inhibitors and interferents, coefficient of variance · 34:00 Question of the Day What is clinical vs. analytical sensitivity/specificity? S1 Ep 243Why Take B-Vitamins?
The importance of B-vitamins can not be overstated. They are used as cofactors in just about every biochemical pathway in the body. Overt B-vitamin deficiencies are not common, though many diet and lifestyle factors can influence levels and lead to insufficiencies. Symptoms of B-vitamin deficiencies are widely variable and not often recognized. Many people choose to take B-vitamin supplements. But why? Should we all be taking a B-complex vitamin? Is it possible to take too much? On today’s show, we do a high-level overview of B-vitamins. We talk about the importance of each B-vitamin in the body, symptoms of insufficiency, and why you might need to supplement.
