S1 Ep 224Starch - The Good, The Bad, and The Bland
Diet and nutrition are a cornerstone of health and wellness. Small changes can have big impacts! With so much research and so many opinions, many people still struggle with what they should be eating. When looking for help, it’s difficult to wade through the various schools of thought since people become entrenched in their dietary camps: keto, carnivore, vegetarian, Mediterranean, etc. Recent trends have been leaning toward decreasing or eliminating carbohydrates in general. But, if history has taught us anything, vilifying specific food groups can have consequences. Are all carbs bad? If our industry espouses a personalized approach to health, shouldn’t that include diet? In today’s episode, we discuss the good and bad of carbohydrates – and more specifically starch. We discuss the different types of starch and the fact that not all carbs are created equally Today on The Lab Report: 2:25 Why are we vilifying carbohydrates? 5:00 Not all carbs are created equally – let’s talk starch basics 6:45 Starch digestibility and glycemic index 8:30 Slowly digestible and resistant starch 12:00 Effects on the microbiome 15:15 Starchy foods and Retrogradation 19:00 Glycoalkaloids, potato safety, corn starch 21:10 Question of the Day Is there anything nutritious in a potato? Our bodies contain an inner clock that helps to regulate hormones and biochemistry. This clock is referred to as the circadian rhythm. The fine timing of this biological rhythm requires signaling from light. With the change in seasons, many of us feel the systemic effects of less daylight in various ways, one of which is altered mood. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that correlates with seasonal patterns. In today’s episode, we discuss the biochemistry of how light regulates the circadian rhythm, the etiologies of seasonal affective disorder, and various treatment strategies which have been used to improve symptoms. S1 Ep 210Microbiome Diversity
The commensal bacteria in the gut microbiome are responsible for so many important functions. Their influence is far-reaching as it relates to overall health. Research shows us that the more diverse that community of bacteria is, the more beneficial it is to systemic health. But what does diversity mean and how do we measure it? There are many calculations used when it comes to diversity of the microbiome, and they can sometimes give differing information. It’s important to understand what’s being measured in order to clinically correlate the result. In today’s episode, we discuss the industry standard Shannon Diversity Index as measured on Genova’s brand new Microbiomix profile. Today on The Lab Report: 3:15 Better Know a Biomarker: Shannon Diversity Index 6:00 Evenness and Richness 7:30 Alpha vs. beta diversity 10:05 Who’s Claude Shannon? 13:00 Get Outta Here! 15:50 Simpson vs. Shannon Index 17:40 The numerical score 19:45 Improving the diversity score Additional Resources: GI Effects with Microbiomix Subscribe, Rate, & Review The Lab Report Thanks for tuning in to this week’s episode of The Lab Report, presented by Genova Diagnostics, with your hosts Michael Chapman and Patti Devers. In the evolving landscape of microbiome research, we are beginning to see that our gut microbiome has more control over our health than we ever knew. Genova’s Microbiomix profile uses the newest technology of whole genome sequencing which adds another layer of understanding. We now see that the microbiome is one of our most important health indicators. We know that commensal bacteria produce many metabolites with far-reaching effects. But many of us forget that these bacteria also produce vitamins. In today’s episode, we discuss vitamin production in the GI tract, its contribution to systemic levels, and the interesting interplay between microbial communities. S1 Ep 207Mast Cell Activation Syndrome & Histamine
Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) has become a hot topic in functional medicine. Mast cells are an integral part of the body’s immune system. They can be found in areas of exposure such as mucosal membranes, the lining of the GI tract, skin, and airways. Mast cells are responsible for storing important chemical mediators like histamine and others which help to instigate allergic responses. Mast cell disorders arise when there are too many mast cells, or they become hyper-reactive. That being said, these conditions are often misunderstood, and diagnoses are sometimes misused. In today’s episode, we focus on the role of mast cells and histamine in the immune response. We discuss the different mast cell activation disorders, how to diagnose them, and what you can do about it. Today on The Lab Report: 3:05 Mast Cell Activation Diseases 5:15 What is a mast cell? S1 Ep 200LPS and Gut Bacteria!
In general, we often think about the commensal bacteria as being beneficial to your health. Did you know that the bacteria in the gut microbiome can also contribute to systemic inflammation and disease? There is molecule called lipopolysaccharide (LPS) within the outer membrane of all gram-negative bacteria. LPS can be readily taken up into circulation where it acts as an inflammatory trigger (endotoxin). But not all LPS can trigger the immune system. Only LPS molecules with a structure containing at least six acyl groups are large enough to stimulate cytokine release – hexa-acylated LPS. On today’s episode, we discuss the LPS molecule, and more specifically hexa-LPS. What is it, how does it cause a problem, and more importantly, what can we do to prevent it from causing inflammation? Today on The Lab Report: 2:30 Gram-negative vs gram-positive bacteria 4:40 Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and systemic endotoxemia 7:05 Hexa-acylated LPS vs. LPS 9:55 Protecting the gut mucosal barrier 10:40 The role of dietary fat 12:15 Logical Speculation: Dietary saturated fats are not all created equally 17:15 Question of the Day? S1 Ep 199Milk? (Patti & Michael on the A1 vs A2 Debate)
Many patients are not able to tolerate milk and dairy products due to GI symptoms such as bloating or diarrhea. In functional medicine, an elimination diet or food antibody testing can help uncover if the casein in cow’s milk might be at the root of these symptoms. Patients often turn to milk alternatives such as plant and nut ‘milk’ to avoid the difficulties with cow’s milk. However, research is showing that it may be a specific type of casein that is causing the problem in milk and there is a debate on the health risks of types of casein: A1 vs. A2. Today we break down the controversy regarding A1 versus A2 milk and we discuss the pros and cons of various types of milk. S1 Ep 198Red Meat & Heart Disease
Foods come in and out of favor all the time. Eggs are good for you… no wait, they are bad… nope, good again – let’s not even discuss butter! There are many disease correlations related to specific foods and literature continues to evolve. One such focus is on red meat and its correlation to cardiovascular disease. But why? Is all red meat bad? Can you eat red meat and not increase heart disease risk? What about it should cause concern? Interestingly, the answer lies in the microbiome’s ability to metabolize the carnitine in red meat into a metabolite called trimethylamine (TMA). What happens from there is the key! But be warned, there is more to TMA than red meat and carnitine. Today we discuss TMA and how it becomes a cardiovascular risk factor (TMAO). We tell you about TMA’s many sources - besides red meat - and why you should care. Today on The Lab Report: 2:10 Food controversies 3:50 Break it Down: Trimethylamine (TMA) and trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) 6:40 TMAO, carnitine, and choline 10:00 Wait, which foods are actually the problem? 13:50 Red meat, TMAO, and cardiovascular risk 18:40 Dietary microbiome changes 20:05 Question of the Day: Which Genova profiles can help? S1 Ep 195Health Optimization Medicine with Dr. Scott Sherr
Many functional and integrative clinicians practice medicine through the construct of finding the root cause of chronic complaints and disease management. What if there was a framework in place to help clinicians navigate a focus on health optimization? Dr. Scott Sherr has the answer. Along with Dr. Ted Achacoso, he founded Health Optimization Medicine and Practice (HOMe/HOPe), a non-profit education company offering CME accredited certification and ongoing educational modules to help clinicians detect and correct root causes of health – not disease. Today we discuss this paradigm shift with Dr. Scott Sherr and learn about the HOMe/HOPe philosophy. We also dive into hyperbaric oxygen therapy, one of Dr. Scott’s many specialties.
