Ep 257254: Risk of Rain 2, Warcraft 3 and Switch Games in 2020

E

We jumped into an Early Access game this week called Risk of Rain 2. Published by Gearbox Publishing, this is the sequel to a side scrolling rogue-like shooter. Now it's in full 3D and it's incredibly fun! 4 player co-op has you picking a character and fighting through hordes of bad guys as you level up all the way to HAHAHAHAHAHAHA (yes that's a level.) We also play A Fisherman's Tale in Virtual Reality. It's a really unique and innovative game within the VR space. Blizzard screwed up again and released Warcraft 3 Reforged pretty broken. The graphics weren't as good, we were missing ladders, modders give up their IP to Blizzard and more. Hear the full story here. We also talk about Atari opening video game hotels and Ninja getting $20-30 million to move from Twitch to Mixer. Our discussion topic is all about what we want to see from the Switch this year. We know Animal Crossing is coming, but what else will we see? We predict everything from Breath of the Wild 2 all the way to Wave Race returning to Nintendo. Special thanks to Crazzie Pro Gear. E

We're back with games to catch up from in 2019. We played Remnant: From the Ashes. This is a game that is a third-person shooter/melee based game similar to Dark Souls. It features dynamic boss fights, advanced gameplay and more. Assemble with Care is a mobile game from the creators of Monument Valley. In this game, you play as Maria who is a traveler who fixes antique things. You soon learn there's more than things to be fixed in this small town.In our gaming news, Ubisoft is restaffing to try and work on improving their stories. Several developers have postponed their games as well to release better products after last year's poor release cycle. We also have Playstation again skipping E3 this year. Is it the end for them? Our discussion revolves around games missing from 2020. We talked about our most anticipated games but here we want to break down games we thought we would see by now and discuss if they're still alive and kicking or will never see the light of day.Special thanks to Crazzie Pro Gear. Alienware reveals a new concept called Concept UFO. Finally, Respawn's boss takes over EA DICE LA's studio. With all that, we still have our biggest event to kick off the year: Game of the Year 2019! We have a number of categories we voted on from Best Shooter to Best Indie Game all leading up to our Game of the Year for 2019. E

Pokemon Sword and Shield has finally arrived on the Switch. This is the first mainline Pokemon game for the Switch and we have some things to say about it. Ep 247244: Call of Duty Modern Warfare, EA on Steam and Blizzcon 2019

E

Call of Duty has returned to the name Modern Warfare with a 2019 take on modern combat. With it comes a new story campaign, new game modes and co-op making for a vast departure from last year's Black Ops 4. This one is more grounded, has a solid story and feels like a return to the feeling that captured us from Modern Warfare 1 and 2. In the news this week, J. Allen Brack apologizes for Blizzard's actions last month, EA announces they're bringing their games to Steam starting with Star Wars and Playstation Vue is shutting down next January. Our discussion this week revolves around Blizzcon itself. We discuss the overall feeling of the conference and their overall better showcase this year than last year's disaster with Diablo Immortal. They unveiled Diablo 4, Overwatch 2, a new WOW expansion called Shadowlands and Hearthstone Battlegrounds. Was it enough to take away the press from their protests about their stance at last month's tournament? Special thanks to Crazzie Pro Gear. Ep 246243: The Outer Worlds, Bloody Harvest and Fallout First Failure

E

The Outer Worlds has finally arrived in our hands. Obsidian Entertainment, the original creators of Fallout, have come out with with a new IP that is a fresh return to the days of old with Fallout and even Bethesda games. It's a great game with a ton of flexibility in choice. We also played Bloody Harvest which is the new free event from Borderlands 3. It's a Halloween event with skulls, new bosses and a cool, new area.Blizzcon hints at some big things coming this next week. Will we see Diablo 4? What about another Overwatch? Starcraft 3? Ubisoft admits Breakpoint was a disaster and is extending their timelines for the future games. Shroud is the next streamer to ditch Twitch for Mixer.Bethesda decided to come out with a subscription service for a paid game: Fallout First. This will allow for private worlds, provide new gear, monthly atoms and more. It's a bit overpriced at $99/year for a few updates when things like Apple Arcade are selling for only $4.99. Why did they do this? Is this the last straw for Fallout 76? Special thanks to Crazzie Pro Gear. They provided us with some incredible pro-level backbacks for carrying our computer equipment to all our events. If you want a bag yourself, head over to their website to purchase one! Ep 245242: Creature in the Well, Riot Games' 10 Year and Quarterly Games Roundup

E

Creature in the Well is a game that came out not long ago from Flight School Studio. It's a pinball, hack and slash dungeon crawler. We love the art style and enjoy the unique gameplay but found there to be some issues with navigating the world. Is it worth buying yet? We also play more Apple Arcade such as Spek and Outlanders. If you want to hear us do these Arcade reviews regularly, let us know! Finally, it's all about Apex Legends new mode with Shadowfall at King's Canyon. Our news focuses on Riot Games turning 10 years old. Fortnite launched Chapter 2 and Blizzard cancelled an event to avoid controversy surrounding the China situation. We tried a new discussion topic in which we wanted to recap the last 3 months. Ep 244241: Grindstone, Blizzard Bans Hearthstone Player and Next Gen Consoles

E

Brett continues his tour of Apple Arcade with a new game called Grindstone from Capy Games. You may know them as the developers behind Below as well as Sword and Scorcery. It's a puzzler with a ton of great mechanics all part of the $4.99/month price point on Apple Arcade. We also dive deeper into Shadowkeep for Destiny 2 talking about the dailies, the new loot and much more. Our news focuses on the controversy surrounding Blizzard's ban of the Hearthstone player for expressing his opinion on stream of what's going on in Hong Kong with the Chinese government. As a result of this action the player took, Blizzard banned him from competing and revoked his prize winnings. After much backlash from gamers, they reduced his ban and gave his money back but that didn't stop gamers from voicing their opinion towards Blizzard. We also talk about the Fortnite black hole that has the servers intentionally down. By the time this podcast drops, it may be back but we discuss what happened leading up to the eventual release of Fortnite Chapter 2 with a new map. Our discussion this week is all about next-gen consoles. Playstation officially revealed their new console to be Playstation 5 and it's coming Holiday 2020. We can now speculate what's to come with Playstation 5 vs. Project Scarlett from Xbox. We also talk about what we want them to work on to improve both systems for the future. The console wars are back. Special thanks to Crazzie Pro Gear. They provided us with some incredible pro-level backbacks for carrying our computer equipment to all our events. Ep 242239: Apple Arcade, Ghost Recon Breakpoint and Pre-Ordering Games

E

Apple Arcade is here and Brett jumps in to give it a go. We ordered it and have downloaded and played games like What the Golf, Where Cards Fall, Mini Motorways and more. It's a great platform for $4.99/month to play mobile games without all the frustrating parts. We also play Ghost Recon Breakpoint in the beta. It was free last week and Austin has some good things to say but ultimately is concerned about the final product.A lot of news game out this past week. We had the State of Play from Playstation with the release date for The Last of Us Part 2, Oculus had their connect and revealed Medal of Honor coming to VR. Apex Legends announces a new map and some frustrating things happened like 2K cracking down on game mods and Mario Kart Tour costing way too much.We finally discuss pre-ordering games. It's changed a lot over the years and after getting burned a few times we explore if it's something gamers should continue to do based on the pre-order offers that most developers provide.Special thanks to Crazzie Pro Gear. Ep 241238: Borderlands 3, Steam Changes and Destiny: Shadowkeep

E

Borderlands 3 is here and we dive deeper into it this week. There are a lot of great things going for it from the weapons, the gameplay and the co-op features. On the other hand, there are some issues with it in regards to the story pacing, world building and more. Steam has significantly changed the way their store works and some feedback has been less than positive from indie developers. Gamestop is working on retro gaming inside their stores and Epic paid a huge sum of money for Control exclusivity. Destiny Year 3 is starting soon beginning with Shadowkeep. Now that Bungie is independent, we're actually excited to see what the future holds for this game. Will we dive back into it? What else is coming to the new updates?Special thanks to Crazzie Pro Gear. They provided us with some incredible pro-level backbacks for carrying our computer equipment to all our events. Ep 240237: Greedfall, Borderlands 3 and Life Changing Games

E

Greedfall is the new game from the team Spiders. It's a cross between the colonial times and a world filled with magic, riches and wild creatures. Austin plays through it and shares his positives and some negatives. It's similar to what Bioware games used to be but does it hold up? We also briefly talk about our first impressions of Borderlands 3. More to come next week.In the news this week Gamestop is closing more stores, Nintendo has a new fitness game, and Control could be getting an Alan Wake crossover. We also talk about the unfortunate lack of depth in the upcoming dungeon creator in Link's Awakening. Our discussion topic this week is a unique one where we talk about games that have changed our lives in some way. From the toils of war to history lessons, we dive into a few of the games that have made us think differently about the world around us.Special thanks to Crazzie Pro Gear. Ep 239236: WoW Classic, Nintendo Direct and What Makes a Good Endgame

E

Austin can't stop playing WoW Classic. So much so it's becoming a problem that Brett thinks he should start another podcast just about WoW. Regardless, we have a discussion on more WoW content such as leveling, questing and getting mounts. In our news, we talk about the latest from Nintendo Direct such as Xenoblade Chronicles remaster coming to the Switch, Overwatch on the Switch, a new 4 player Kirby game, Deadly Premonition getting a sequel and much more! We also talk about Gearbox creating pre-loading for Epic Games Store, the creative director of Ghostwire: Tokyo leaving and Doom vodka. In our discussion, we dive into what makes a good endgame and what exactly is an endgame? Games with loot or leveling often have it and we talk about the good and the bad of all of these. Borderlands 3 just announced their new endgame content so we figured it was a good time to dive deeper. Special thanks to Crazzie Pro Gear. Ep 238235: Control, Cyberpunk 2077 and WOW: Classic

E

Control is the latest game from Remedy Entertainment, creators of Alan Wake, Max Payne and Quantum Break. This latest entry Brett has played several hours of and has some positive things to say. It's a nice change of pace as a true to form single player experience. In our news, Cyberpunk 2077 developers CD Projekt Red have released some new footage with further details about the game. Telltale Games is getting revived and Amazon may have leaked Overwatch for the Switch. We also have the industry's first mental health event coming in October. In our discussion, we talk about the craze that is World of Warcraft: Classic. It's back and everyone is back in the WOW obsession. Austin talks about his experiences and we go through some of the happenings of the last week. Special thanks to Crazzie Pro Gear. Ep 237234: Borderlands 2, Gamescom 2019 and The State of Games as a Service

E

We jump back in the past and play Borderlands 2 in anticipation of Borderlands 3! It feels so different from 2012...it's way harder! Fortunately, we manage to survive relatively unscathed. In the news, we talk a lot about Gamescom 2019. With new trailers from Avengers, Death Stranding and more, it's a lot of fun stuff to talk about. Apex Legends devs say some not so nice things to toxic gamers and Sony may start offering more multi-platform games. Lastly, we were sad to hear that Gamestop decided to lay off a bunch of employees including 7 key members of Game Informer. We were sad to see them go. Finally, in our discussion we jump in and talk about games as a service games. Inspired by an article in Game Informer, we visit some of the games that are live services and judge their performance over the years. How are they doing since release? No Man's Sky is doing really well and some others (Fallout 76) aren't doing as well. Special thanks to Crazzie Pro Gear. Ep 236233: Fire Emblem Three Houses, Fortnite and Apex Legends Iron Crown

E

This week Austin dives into Fire Emblem: Three Houses exclusive to the Switch. It's the next game in the Fire Emblem series in which you pick from one of three Houses and do more than just combat. There's a lot to digest in this game and we talk all about what makes this game special. It's now the best selling Fire Emblem in the franchise! In our news, we discuss Ninja's marketing scheme and the mech's now in Fortnite for all players. There are also a lot of people leaving big studios for other endevours such as Tim Willits from iD Software and the lead producer of Anthem leaving EA. In our discussion, Apex Legends launched their first special event and with it came more loot boxes. However, these boxes were expensive and the internet reacted. They went back on the high cost and adjusted some things to make it better...but is it fully better? Special thanks to Crazzie Pro Gear. Ep 235232: Shakedown Hawaii, Winds of Magic and Borderlands 3 Leaks

E

This week we talk about a fun, new game we came across called Shakedown: Hawaii. It's a 16-bit adventure game similar to the original Grand Theft Auto where you lose a lot of money in your business and have to take back what's yours by any means necessary. Austin also plays the new DLC for Warhammer Vermintide 2 called Winds of Magic. It's a super challenging take on an already difficult game. In our news, we talk yet another accusation that video games cause violence and how rage about the Epic Games Store is getting a bit out of hand. Twitch also launches their own broadcast software, Discord allows live streaming inside voice channels and more developers are making games for Oculus Rift than ever before. In our discussion, we go over a series of stories that has been circulating the web about Borderlands 3. A YouTuber SupMatto allegedly reported some leaks on BL3 and as a result had private investigators sent to his house by 2K Games to stop. They also hit him with some copyright claims which has ultimately shut his channel down for the forseeable future. Blame goes both ways but what do you think about this whole situation? Ep 234231: Divinity: Original Sin 2, LEGO Tower and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

E

We have been dying to start a campaign in Divinity Original Sin 2 and over the week at QuakeCon we dived in. Since then, we've ran a few sessions that have been a ton of fun. We discuss the parallels between this game and Divinity. We also play a new tower game called LEGO Tower from nimblebit. This is the same creators as Tiny Towers with a similar concept, but better graphics and branded for LEGO. It also has a bit more microtransactions than normal :-) In our news, Ninja has quit Twitch and moved over to Mixer exclusively. EA is making a ton of money on live services unfortunately, showing they aren't stopping anytime soon and Shadows of Mordor was once a Batman game! In our discussion this week, we talk all about the multiplayer reveals for Call of Duty Modern Warfare. There are a lot of new things to talk about such as vehicles, up to 100 player combat, an intense gun customization system and much more. Special thanks to Crazzie Pro Gear. Ep 233230: Doom Eternal, QuakeCon 2019 & Mass Spending Tactics in Games

E

We went to QuakeCon 2019 this past weekend to celebrate Doom's 25th anniversary! We got to see some new details on Doom, actually play Doom Eternal and participate in BYOC! QuakeCon was great and it was nice to see all the community out there to hang out with us. This week in the news, Nintendo is fixing their joy-cons, Overwatch has a new hero, Disney talks on acquiring Activision Blizzard and Star Wars The Fallen Order is like Sekiro. Oh and some valets in GTA Online get their butts kicked, caught on fire, ran over, tortured and more. People aren't nice to these NPC's... In the discussion, we go over a video surfaced by YongYea and a few other YouTuber's about a keynote given 3 years ago at a Helsinki conference. They talk about "Going Whaling" and using what we consider malicious tactics in getting players to spend more and more money using their weaknesses. It's an interesting topic that needs discussed so hopefully we can strike some change. Special thanks this week to Crazzie Pro Gear. They provided us with some fantastic backpacks for carrying our gear to the QuakeCon event and they were a life-saver. Interested in a bag of your own? Ep 228225: Wargroove, Auto Chess and "Surprise Mechanics" from EA

E

Brett and Austin give a new indie game a try called Wargroove. It's inspired by a game from the Gameboy Advance days called Advance Wars. This one takes a different spin by adding a medieval/fantasy theme to the gameplay. Austin also plays Planet Alpha. It's a side-scrolling game with gorgeous graphics and surviving and solving puzzles in a foreign world. In our news, auto-chess is all the rage these days. Last week, Valve dropped Dota Underlords and Riot dropped Teamfight Tactics. Both are taking on the auto chess craze started by some modders in the game DOTA. EA says they're still committed to Anthem and Assassin's Creed has a story creator that has spawned several farming quests. In our discussion, naturally EA is back in the news with their legal briefing in Europe where they were being questioned about loot boxes and gambling. Their representative said loot boxes are actually "surprise mechanics" and people find them to be fun and enjoyable. She said they are doing nothing unethical. It's funny to see such a large company changing their story so often. Check out video clips of our news every week over on YouTube. E3 2019 is upon us and that means lots of news and predictions. We dive deep into each major player in the conferences and talk about what we know and what we expect to come. Ep 224221: A Plague's Tale Innocence, Human Fall Flat & Game Difficulty

E

Asobo Studio has mostly been a support studio in the past but has recently dropped a new title called A Plague's Tale Innocence. It's a game about a girl and her brother running from the Inquisition. It's creative, original and full of great gameplay. We also play an older game called Human Fall Flat. It's a physics-based game where you have to perform platforming maneuvers with a very unstable character. In the news, GOG aims to unite all our game launchers on the PC and Dauntless is the first game to offer crossplay with the PS4. The Firewatch publishers announce a new handheld device and Steam launches Steam Chat. In our discussion,we talk about difficulty in games. Some games like Sekiro don't come with a difficulty setting. It's one size fits all. That is both good and bad for the gamer. Rage 2 is here from Avalanche Studios and iD Software. It's a sequel to a game we never thought would get a sequel. Is it worth the wait or does it fail to deliver? We dive into the story, gameplay, the open-world and much more. We also finish Katana Zero and discuss how much we enjoyed that experience. In our news, Epic Games Store bombed with their sale due to broken features. Minecraft unveils Minecraft Earth, an AR game like Pokemon Go in the real world. Microsoft and Sony announced a partnership for streaming services and Call of Duty 2020 is now being made by Treyarch and Sledgehammer may be pulled off the project. Ep 222219: Mortal Kombat 11, Dark Devotion and Monetization in Games

E

The 11th installment in the Mortal Kombat series has arrived. With it comes a few new characters, a new story mode, Towers of Time and an elaborate tutorial. There is a lot to digest in this game we cover a few of the parts that make this great...and not so great. In our news, Fortnite has a new surprise in their latest season, Sony has their 2nd state of play with an exciting Final Fantasy announcement and Ubisoft announces Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. There were also over 150 employees who walked out of Riot Games to protest forced arbitration. In our news, we talk about the monetization strategies that still plague games today. A US senator is looking to ban loot boxes and pay to win items that prey on children. Additionally, EA is changing their strategy now that they see Anthem's development and launch strategy didn't work. Will we enter a phase of most games being forever "early access"? Ep 221218: Katana Zero, World War Z and Borderlands 3

E

Katana Zero is that indie game we've all been waiting for this year. Produced over a period of 6 years by one developer, this is a cyberpunk, neo-noir style side scrolling action game. It reminds us quickly of Celeste gameplay but the story here is so well delivered and the gameplay is incredible. We also get back into World War Z since Brett convinces Austin to finally get it. Our review covers all episodes but the Tokyo level. In our news, there is a lot of virtual reality news this week. Valve has announced their Index headset which sold out in 30 minutes, Oculus is shipping their new headsets by the end of the month and we are getting a flagship Valve game in VR by the end of the year. Epic Games is making moves and they recently just acquired Rocket League's developer Psyonix. There are also hints a Left 4 Dead 3 is in production. In our discussion,we talk about the live stream showcasing gameplay from Borderlands 3. It looks incredible and we dive into some of the new features that come with the game. We also talk about some of the controversy that Randy Pitchford can't seem to avoid with him taking offense to an article clarifying what was said during the live stream. Ep 220217: World War Z, Left 4 Dead 2 and Avengers: Endgame

E

World War Z is finally here and it has all the right formulas to be a loyal successor to Left 4 Dead 2. Does it succeed? Brett talks about his experiences so far with the horde, the co-op mechanics, the progression system and more. In order to properly compare, we dive back into Left 4 Dead 2 to see how it holds up. There's also a strong modding community around it now so we start modding the game to add a little fun. In our news segment, analysts predict PC gaming is dying again but it very well could be if Epic Games Store keeps going down the path they do with essentially blackmail of Steam. Games as a service are also taking over with Titanfall 3 delayed even further due to the success of Apex: Legends. Finally, a game is developed that can detect Alzheimer's faster than medical tests and it's fun to play! Avengers: Endgame released this past weekend and broke box office records. Last year, Marvel's Spider-Man dropped and there are rumors a Marvel Gamesverse is being created. If this happened, what kinds of games do we want to see? We predict the best types of games using all the characters from the films and comics with a few movie spoilers towards the end. Check out video clips of our news every week over on YouTube. Ep 219216: Last Day of June, Wolfenstein 2 and Writing Adventures for D&D

E

This week we go back in time a bit and play Last Day of June on the Switch. This is an indie title about a man and his wife becoming separated due to unforseen circumstances and you have to try and piece it back together and hopefully stop it from happening. We also revisit The New Colossus from 2017 to see how it's aged and if we still think it's GOTY material. Ep 218215: Beat Saber, Chasm and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

E

This week we finally find out what all the hype is about surrounding Beat Saber. It's a game available on PSVR and Oculus Rift where players control two lightsabers and slash through cubes coming at them to the beat of songs. It's incredibly fun and we talk all about it. Austin plays a game called Chasm with procedurally generated maps that may or may not help the game succeed. In our news this week, someone is trying to do a real-life battle royale. Overwatch League players are quitting due to stress and Jason West (former co-founder of Respawn Entertainment) is joining forces with Epic Games. Speaking of Respawn, we finally know what the new Star Wars game is all about coming out of EA. It's called Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and is a single player only, microtransaction-free story campaign following a Jedi during the Dark Times. Will this give EA a win or will it mean the end of EA and their license with Star Wars? Check out video clips of our news every week over on YouTube. Ep 217214: Sekiro, Orwell and Where Bioware Went Wrong

E

We have a special guest return to the podcast this week! He joins us to talk about Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice so we can determine how it compares to the Souls series. Brett also plays Orwell: Ignorance is Strength, a game from 2018 where you play as big brother amidst a world of unrest. In the news, Borderlands 3 has a release date and is a 6 month Epic Games Store exclusive. Gamestop reports a lot of losses yet again and Square Enix is threatened in Japan. April Fools Day came and went and had a ton of reveals about funny new technology and updates that are hilariously accurate. Our discussion revolves around the Kotaku article from Jason Schreier about what went wrong with Bioware. We share our opinions on the Anthem launch debacle, the leadership struggles and the problematic game engine for an RPG. You can read the full article on Kotaku. Ep 216213: The Gardens Between, Firestorm and New Switch Consoles

E

The Gardens Between is a clever puzzle game from The Voxel Agents. In this game, two friends are in a dream-like series of islands and you manipulate time to get them to their destination. Brett was definitely sold. We also play Firestorm, Battlefield's take on Battle Royale. Is it worth the playthrough? In our news this week, Borderlands 3 was finally revealed and it looks incredible. Apple announced a subscription service called Apple Arcade, PS4 had their first Nintendo Direct-like State of Play event and Valve teases a new VR headset called Index. Our discussion is all about what we expect from the new consoles Nintendo is announcing this year. It's rumored to be two consoles: one for the lower price tier and another for more hardcore gamers. We talk about what else we expect them to do to the console to take it a step above. Check out video clips of our news every week over on YouTube. We also talk about all the news such as Playstation bringing Nintendo Nindie style showcases to the game space, the new Oculus untethered Rift and the success of Apex Legends continuing forward. Ep 214211: SXSW Gaming Expo, Halo and Early Access Content

E

We took a trip to Austin for the SXSW Gaming Expo this past weekend and it was a blast! We played a ton of awesome indie games both released and unreleased, met some awesome people and got to see some cool parties. Some of our highlights included Astroneer, The Gardens Between, Zarvot and Joggernauts. In our news, Halo Master Chief Collection was announced for PC and 343 Studios got a bunch of pizza. Brendan Greene is starting a new internal division at PUBG Corp and Ninja was paid around 1 million to stream Apex Legends on launch day. Our discussion this week involves premium, early access content. Many games have special editions priced higher than 59.99 that include not only bonus in-game items but also early access to play the game or early access to DLC. This opens a wider conversation about whether or not we're overspending on content or access and if it's fair to the broader community as a whole. Ep 213210: Devil May Cry 5, Ape Out and The Changing Face of Battle Royale

E

Capcom returns with the next installment in their Devil May Cry series with Devil May Cry 5. We return with Dante but introduce a few new experiences, namely the playable character V. This is an action-packed, combo-heavy game and Austin shares his first 5-6 hours of time with the game. Brett also gets his hands on a new game from Devolver Digital called Ape Out. You're an ape locked up in a jail cell and you have to break out and escape through more and more challenging levels. It has a great art style with a simplistic, yet challenging design. In our news, remote play is here for PS4 and the Nintendo Switch launches virtual reality with the Labo kits. EA announces they're doing EA Play still at E3 this year but will not have a press conference. Finally, Artifact, the new card game from Valve, is going through some struggles. Will it survive? Finally, we talk about the changing face of Battle Royale. With Apex Legends blasting onto the scene and far beating numbers set by Fortnite, we speculate on where the future is headed. Ep 212209: The Division 2, Pokemon Sword and What's Next for Borderlands?

E

Ubisoft returns with The Division 2. We dive into the beta to see what's changed with this iteration set in Washington D.C. Will it keep fans engaged long-term with all their new features? Brett literally jumps into Anthem to test out the intro and see if the long loading times are a reality (hint: they are.) We also talk about our awesome Super Smash Bros. tournament we held last week. Shoutout to ice and TROL for getting #1 and #2 and winning the big prizes! What's more exciting is The Pokemon Company has officially unveiled Pokemon Sword and Shield coming later this year! Set in Galar, you embark on a journey in what appears to be a take on Great Britain. We can't wait! Meanwhile, some CEO's for big companies are way overpaid, Fortnite is considering respawning and someone leaked the Apex Legends map a year ago and no one really cared. Oh and did we mention Xbox Game Pass may come to Switch? That'll be interesting. Our discussion is on Gearbox Software this week. They revealed they have some big announcements coming to Pax East 2019 at the end of the month. We assume it's Borderlands 3 and we speculate what would make the next Borderlands something we'd get hyped about. We also talk about some lesser known franchises from Gearbox and discuss how they'd fair in today's market. Check out video clips of our news every week over at youtube.com/theinnergamer. Ep 211208: Metro Exodus, Tetris 99 and Google's Secret Gaming Project

E

Metro Exodus is here. It's the game from 4A Games and a series that doesn't get near enough recognition. Is it worth the playthrough? How does it feel to exit the tunnels and come out into the world? Austin talks all about his 8+ hours in the game. Brett also jumps into Tetris 99, the free game for subscribers of Nintendo Online. It's 99 players versus you in a battle royale of Tetris. Surprisingly, it's quite good and a lot of fun. In our news this week, Reggie has announced his retirement from Nintendo of America and he is to be replaced by Bowser (no seriously.) Fortnite had a festival but not really, it wasn't official and wasn't very good so the creators are getting sued. Finally, EA is paying reviewers as part of their partnership program and may be having people remove the watermark if they say bad things about a game. Ethical? Let's find out. Google has announced they're revealing a new gaming project at GDC this year in March. Last year they announced Assassin's Creed Odyssey was playable in the Chrome Browser which played surprisingly well. We talk about what this could mean if Google enters the gaming space and what they could be developing for the future. Who's their market? Let's find out. Ep 210207: Kingdom Hearts, Apex Legends & Professional eSports with Justin Varghese

E

We have a special guest this week! Justin Varghese joins us to discuss gaming and rising up in the professional eSports scene. We dive into Kingdom Hearts and how it changed from the early days to today. We also talk a lot about our love for Apex Legends as the new battle royale that's taken over the world by storm. In our news, Activision Blizzard laid off a ton of employees and we share our thoughts. Ubisoft on the other hand doesn't fire people but reports strong profits. Nintendo had a direct revealing Super Mario Maker 2, Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening being remade and many more great looking games. Bioware also says they're not done with the Mass Effect series. Our discussion has us digging into Justin's experience as an eSports commentator in several leagues around the country. He eventually found himself with a full-time position at Dreamhack as the Marketing Manager for North America. Now he's working on bringing people to what may be their largest Dreamhack yet: Dreamhack Dallas. It's right here in our backyard and it sounds amazing! Ep 209206: Apex Legends, Death Stranding & Creative Marketing in Games

E

Respawn Entertainment dropped a bombshell on everyone with the surprise reveal of Apex Legends. It's a free-to-play Battle Royale game that goes up against Fortnite, PUBG and even Overwatch. We played a ton of it and have a lot to see about how this game brings some new quality of life changes that help evolve the genre forward. In our news, a film director calls Death Stranding a "miracle." Xbox Live is coming to the Switch, Android and iOS for some reason and we speculate why. Meanwhile, Pennsylvania politicians want to tax violent video games as if that would solve the problem. Our discussion is stemmed from Apex Legends and how they had no lead up marketing for this game and how successful it was. How can this concept be replicated in other games? What about Cyberpunk 2077 being quiet then releasing a 45 min gameplay trailer before going quiet again? How about when P.T. came out of nowhere promoting Silent Hills? There are many different creative ways developers have marketed games. We explore all of these and how they can be applied to future games to put more focus on the game itself rather than the marketing campaign. Ep 208205: Catastronauts, Kingdom Hearts 3 and Social Experiences in Gaming

E

We hosted our first event of 2019 and featured the 4 player couch co-op game called Catastronauts. Think of it as Overcooked meets FTL...all in space. We also play a good amount of the Anthem demo to get a feel for what kind of game that will become and we play the initial parts of Kingdom Hearts 3 from a newcomers perspective. In our news, Sony is focusing first party efforts on the PS5, the devs at Overkill's The Walking Dead knew it was doomed and Overwatch's new map has a piano. We also have a discussion on Epic Games convincing Metro Exodus to pull from the Steam store and become exclusive to the Epic Games store for a year. Some people aren't happy about this switch. Finally, Fortnite hosted their first ever live concert featuring Marshmello. It was about 10-15 minutes long and was full of lights and effects to keep people interested and engaged.
