Ep 197194: Red Dead Redemption 2, Blackout and Xbox Game Pass

E

We finally get to take a trip back to 1899 where the West was changing. Rockstar Games is back after 7 years of development on Red Dead Redemption 2. We have played several hours of it and have some very developed thoughts. The open world is vast, the characters are deep and the detail is unreal. Brett also plays the Blackout component of Call of Duty Black Ops 4 and talks about that for a little bit. Hint: it's intense. In our news, we have a ton of stories from things such as eSports and Drake, Epic Games getting a huge investment and Devil May Cry 5 releases a really expensive new edition. We also dive a bit deep into conversations such as Jade Raymond leaving EA, if GTA 6 was made in today's political climate and more. Ep 196193: Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 and RDR 2

E

Austin gets his hands on Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, the next game in the franchise from Ubisoft. In this game, we're taken to Greece where we experience the Spartans, ship battles and much more throughout the game. Does this one live up to the hype? Brett also plays some extensive Call of Duty Black Ops 4 MP. There have been a lot of changes made to the formula for the better and he shares his thoughts on whether or not this game is worth returning to. In our news, Black Ops 4 and Star Citizen rake in a ton of money. Battlefield 5 releases a trailer and the developer behind Dreadnought are laying people off. Oh and have you heard of this magical new battle royale called Spellbreak? Finally, we discuss the looming release of Red Dead Redemption 2 and the article written by Vulture on the struggles of building a game to the level of RDR. Several long nights, lots of voice actor and intensely talented people worked hard to see this game come to light, and very soon it'll be in our hands. Ep 194191: Dead by Daylight, Towerfall and Harry Potter RPG Predictions

E

We bring on a special guest for the podcast to talk about a game we've never discussed: Dead by Daylight. It's a 4v1 co-op game similar to Friday the 13th. Is it worth jumping into at this point or not? We also play Towerfall and talk about the excitement behind that game now that it's out on the Switch. This is from the creators of Celeste so we had high hopes and they delivered. In our news segment, PSX is no more, Red Dead Redemption 2 reveals more about what you can do in the world and Nintendo Switch may have a new model come out next year. Oh and Assassin's Creed Odyssey may have a microtransaction problem. Our discussion is about the leak that there may be a Harry Potter, open world RPG in the works. Footage leaked online of what looks to be a very well built Harry Potter game featuring a character creator, spells, Hogwarts and many fantastic beasts. We talk about our predictions for this game such as what we want to see and who may be developing it. Check out video clips of our news every week over at youtube.com/theinnergamer. Ep 193190 : Vermintide 2 DLC, Oculus Quest and What Happened to Telltale Games?

E

We don't play any new games this week but we did get a chance to try the DLC for Warhammer Vermintide 2: Shadows Over Bogenhafen. We talk about what it's like playing the new content and if it's worth the $9.99 price tag. Oculus announces a completely independent VR headset with similar qualities to the Oculus Rift that doesn't require a computer but does include full touch controls. Will this be the VR upgrade we want? Sony also gives in and allows crossplay for Fortnite only as of now. We hope more is to come later. Finally, our discussion topic dives deep into Telltale Games. We explore what how they formed, where they had their successes and pitfalls and what eventually lead to their downfall. We also explore what could be next for the team. Although the company itself is going away, where will these talented people go? Did you play Telltale Games? Is there anything in particular you would've liked to had seen done better over the years? Ep 192189: Telltale Games, Tomb Raider and the Switch in an Online World

E

Austin finally finishes Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Is the game worth playing through the trilogy? Will there be a sequel? Other than that we don't have any new games played this week! In the news, tons of details about locations were revealed about Red Dead Redemption 2 and it looks like we are getting RDR Online. Fortnite has hit a huge player count and Telltale Games is on the verge of shutdown. We also have a Playstation Classic in the works coming later this year. Finally, our discussion covers the Switch in an online World. The online service is here and is required to play games online. What do we think of it? What could make it better? We also discuss the game systems with the NES built in and how that functions. What do you think about the Switch online? Can it compete with the others? Ep 191188: Shadow of the Tomb Raider, COD Blackout and What's Next for Blizzard?

E

The final game in the Lara Croft trilogy has arrived. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the game that shows young Lara turn into the Lara we all grew up knowing. Does the game deliver? We don't know yet but we can say the game has some ups and downs we've experienced so far in our first 3-4 hours of the game. Brett tries out this new RPG, roguelike game called Bad North from a small developer out of Sweden. You play as Vikings defending your lands from attackers. Finally, the beta for Blackout, Call of Duty's take on Battle Royale, is here. We share our first impressions of this bold, new move for Treyarch. In our news, we discuss Dr. Disrespect getting a weapon fired at his house, Alan Wake is being made into a TV show, Assassin's Creed has a big DLC lineup for next year and it took 18 hours for the first players to beat the new Destiny raid called The Last Wish. Our discussion this week revolves around Blizzard. News has come out that they're hiring a ton of people at Blizzard possibly for another game from their existing properties or maybe a new game entirely. Are we going to see Diablo 4? What about a Destiny-like version of Starcraft? Will we see a brand new game altogether? Check out video clips of our news every week over at youtube.com/theinnergamer. Ep 190187: Marvel's Spider-Man, Battlefield 5 and the Next Phase of Battle Royale

E

Marvel's Spider-Man is finally here on the PS4. The wait is over and the hype is beyond real. We've played it and are happy to say the game delivers. Insomniac Games outdid themselves with this title and we can't wait to play more. Brett may even platinum it! The Battlefield 5 open beta is also here and Brett and Austin jump in to share their opinions. It's better than most people are saying and we share some of the highlights from Rotterdam and Narvik. In the news, we have a ton of new details thanks to Game Informer on Fallout 76. We talk about trolling and censorship online and discuss the new Anthem trailer around "Our World, My Story." Finally, they have a greaseproof Xbox One controller that no one really wanted! Our discussion is all about the future of Battle Royale and where it's headed. Ep 189186: Donut County, Cyberpunk 2077 and Is Battlefield V Setup for Disaster?

E

In this episode, Brett plays the game Donut County by Ben Esposito and published by Annapurna Pictures. This game has you playing as a raccoon collecting things into a hole that gets bigger as you grab things. It's a fun puzzle platformer with a clever little story. Find out Brett's final verdict in the show. In our gaming news, we talk about all the new Nindie announcements from last week, the reveal of gameplay for Cyberpunk 2077 and Pewdiepie maybe getting dethroned. We also talk about Xbox's new all access deal with a console, Game Pass and Games with Gold all in one. Finally, we dive into Battlefield V. It's coming out now in November after being delayed a month. We look through the history from announcement to current time and review whether or not it will survive based on some of the issues brought up by the community. We're still hyped about it but there is some concern about its commercial success. Check out video clips of our discussion every week over at youtube.com/theinnergamer. Ep 188185: Escape from Tarkov, Semblance and Gamescom 2018

E

In this episode, we dive into two lesser known games. Escape from Tarkov is a first person shooter from Battlestate Games currently in Beta. It's a story driven MMO with FPS and RPG elements according to the developers. We also play the game from the South African team nyamkop called "Semblance." This is a literal plat-form-er where you play a blob that can form the platforms around you in order to reach new heights. In our news, we talk Overwatch's new map, Assassin's Creed skipping 2019, a Dark Souls Trilogy and a rumor that someone pooped in line at Gamescom. Finally, our discussion is all about Gamescom because there was too much to fit into the news segment. We got some awesome gameplay trailers from World War 3, Devil May Cry 5, The Settlers, The Division, Battlefield 5, Stormdivers and much much more. In addition, Austin and Brett share their top 3 favorite announcements from the showcase. Check out video clips of our discussion every week over at youtube.com/theinnergamer. Ep 187184: Overcooked 2, Pocket City and The Cost of Being a Streamer

E

We provide our first impressions of Overcooked 2, the sequel to the awesome couch co-op from Ghost Town Games. They've added more levels, more complexity, better graphics and more zaniness to this world. It's wonderful. We also review a game that just released on the Switch called Manual Samuel from Perfectly Paranormal. It's crazy with a friend trying to control this guy. Finally we jump into Pocket City on iOS and Android and experience a gem of a game for the mobile platform. It has no microtransactions, is addicting as hell and full of progression. We highly recommend it if you're into city sims. In our news, we dive deep into many things such as the continuing controversy surrounding the IGN reviewer who plagiarized content, we talk about EA losing a key member and their Battlefield V trailer, Life is Strange 2 has a new trailer and Amazon Prime cutting some big features for gamers. Finally, our discussion is on the cost of being a streamer. Earlier this year we talked about how game designers are incorporating features to their game built with streaming in mind but this time we're coming from the streamer's perspective. We talk about the controversy with Ninja and his recent statement about not playing with women, we discuss the launch of Steam.tv and what that means for the industry plus what new tools could advance the industry forward. We also play more of Lightfall and talk about this awesome 2v2 couch competitve game we found called Mowin' and Throwin'. It's a blast and more people need to jump into this game. It's exhilarating and intense. We can't wait to have this at our events! In our news, Ninja reaches 10 million followers, a 7 year old makes a video game, Sea of Thieves releases a new expansion to expand their formula and much more! Our discussion this week is about when game developers should pivot their studio. Sometimes games start to get stale so when should they either take a risk or return to the basics? This idea came from the recent releases of God of War taking a huge risk with their new game and Octopath Traveler scrapping most of their modern day RPG tropes for more traditional turn-based combat. It's been successful for both of them but who else needs to follow suit? Check out video clips of our discussion every week over at youtube.com/theinnergamer. Ep 184181: No Man's Sky Next, Sleep Tight and Marketing a Successful Indie Game

E

Can it be true? Can No Man’s Sky finally be good? With their Next update that just released, it may have just achieved that. They’ve overhauled everything with more to do, dynamic worlds and MULTIPLAYER! Brett also plays Sleep Tight which is a tower defense game set in a kid’s bedroom. You have to set up pillow walls and toy turrets to fight off against the monsters in the closet. It’s a cute little game that leaves a little to be desired. In the news this week, London Spitfire wins the Overwatch League Finals! Nintendo Labo has a great new update with vehicles, Destiny is putting it’s lore in books and the team behind Dead Cells pays everyone the same and has no bosses. Our discussion topic is about indie game distribution. Last month we had a story about a game called “Active Shooter” that eventually got pulled because of its controversial subject matter. Soon after, Steam stated they’d no longer be policing games unless it was illegal or “trolling.” In addition to this, getting into systems such as the Xbox and Playstation is way harder so we explore the difficulties indie game developers have in such a flooded market. How do you really get discovered and make money? Check out video clips of our discussion every week over at youtube.com/theinnergamer. Ep 183180: The Banner Saga 3, Runbow and Game Length and Replayability in Gaming

E

Today is the day The Banner Saga 3 releases on PS4, Xbox One, PC and the Switch. This is the final game in the turn-based trilogy from Stoic Studio featuring devs from Bioware. Austin has been diving into this game from The Banner Saga 1 and has completed the entire game with his full review. This series was a blast and we can't wait to share it with you. We also play an up to 9 player shared screen game called Runbow. This game involves platforming in which colors change to make platforms literally disappear. It's a blast to play with friends with tons of game modes. In our news, we talk about all the money made with Fortnite and Microsoft, what happened after the PT port got cancelled and the new Spiderman trailer. We also talk about all the new changes in No Man's Sky for their next update called Next. Finally, we have a really exciting discussion topic this week on game length and replayability. Josef Feres, director of A Way Out, talked about how he's tired of people judging a game by its length. We discuss if there should be an ideal length for a game and why replayability is important in a game. With so many games out there, sometimes it's important to stick with a few. What do you think about our thoughts? Check out video clips of our discussion every week over at youtube.com/theinnergamer. E

Octopath Traveler is finally here and we carry through with our save into the game world itself. This game is long and it will be quite the journey but I think we're ready. Brett tries out the new Pokemon Go like game called The Walking Dead: Our World. It's similar in vein to Pokemon Go with a bit more time-gating. Finally, Austin is playing through The Banner Saga 2 in prep for The Banner Saga 3 at the end of July. In our news we talk about some of the major enhancements to Warframe, Shroud getting banned from PUBG for a month and the major updates to Fortnite with Season 5. Finally, our discussion has us looking back on the first half of 2018 with our top 3 games thus far. Then we look forward into the rest of 2018. Ep 181178: Pode, West of Loathing and Danny Gallagher on Video Game Writing

E

This week we run through some indie games such as Pode from the team at Henchman & Goon. We also finally play through the incredibly funny adventure RPG West of Loathing. Both of these games are now on the Switch so naturally we had to give them a go. In our gaming news, we talk about the Guild Wars 2 writer controversy, some new remakes in the business and Steam’s most played games. This week we have an exciting new interview with writer Danny Gallagher. Danny Gallagher has written for the Jackbox Party Pack series contributing to Lie Swatter, Trivia Murder Party and Bracketeering. He also recently co-wrote the latest game from Snap Finger Click called Awkward. It’s a new party game that fits the name...it’s awkward. Ep 180177: The Banner Saga, Life is Strange 2 and Streaming Video Games

E

The Banner Saga released over 4 years ago but has finally been released on the Switch. Naturally, we decide to jump in and see what this franchise is all about before the release of The Banner Saga 3 this month. We also play some Fortnite and find the mysterious launch of Season 5 to catch our interest. Turns out a rocket created a rift in the sky and who knows what will come out of that. But it’s growing… This week in news, Life is Strange 2 was announced as well as a Halo TV series with Showtime. In addition, Sony is having some woes when they won’t allow crossplay like everyone else. Overwatch also revealed their new hero...a hamster? We talk about what Hammond is all about. Finally, our discussion is all about video game streaming. Not Twitch streaming, actual game streaming versus downloaded content. Xbox hinted at it, Playstation already does it and the PC is looking into it. What will we see come our way in the next few years with streaming? This week we jump into the new game from Hi-Rez Studios, Realm Royale. This is their take on the Battle Royale genre complete with abilities, forges, mounts and more. It’s an interesting take on the genre and pretty solid for an alpha! We also play Hollow Knight now that it’s on the Switch. It’s a very charming game although very challenging. In our news, we have a lot of details on Cyberpunk 2077 thanks to a 60 minute behind closed doors demo that press got to see. We also dive deep into the future of Xbox and the complaints people have with HitRecord and Beyond Good and Evil’s collaboration. Finally, in our discussion we close out with our best and worst from the PC Gaming Show and Nintendo. We also share Austin and Brett’s Top 5 Most Anticipated Games from E3 2018. Ep 177174: Totally Accurate Battlegrounds and the Best and Worst of E3 2018 Part 1

E

This week Brett gets his hands on the new parody of Battle Royale: Totally Accurate Battlegrounds. From the makers of Clustertruck and Totally Accurate Battle Simulator, comes a game that makes fun of the battle royale genre while being a bit fun to play. It's full of crazy physics mayhem, muscle cars and all kinds of wild weapons to explore. It's buggy and it's early access but it's well worth the $4.99 to try it out. We also have our news discussion with some pre-E3 reveals from Sony, Valve now allowing everything onto their store and the creators of Batallion 1944 have a little payback for one of their players who said some not nice things about the studio. Finally, we talk all about our best and worst moments from E3 2018 all the way through the Sony conference. We highlight the some of the moments from EA, Microsoft, Bethesda, Square Enix, Ubisoft and Sony all in one jam packed episode. We talk about games like Anthem, Gears 5, Halo Infinite, Cyberpunk 2077, Rage 2, Fallout 76, The Division 2, Skull and Bones, Spiderman, The Last of Us Part 2 and much more. Ep 176173: Pokemon Quest, Detroit: Become Human and Fallout 76 at E3

E

This week we dive into the free game from Game Freak, Pokemon Quest. It’s basically a mobile game built for the Switch (and it will be coming to mobile later on.) We also talk about our conclusion of Detroit: Become Human and how much choice the game really has. Finally, Mario Tennis Aces releases a demo and Brett jumps into it for a few rounds. In our news, Austin gets pissed at a lot of things such as the PUBG lawsuit, expensive DLC, Bungie’s new investment and Sea of Thieves shallow content despite their new found attempts to add more depth. At least Atari made a bunch of money on their new console but will it find a market? Finally, our discussion is over the E3 heavy hitters. Ep 175172: Detroit Become Human, Rocket League and Battlefield V

E

We experience what life would be like if androids become more human to the point where they’re nearly indistinguishable. What would our lives be like? How would react in certain situations? In Detroit: Become Human, we get to experience this from the mind of David Cage, creator of Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls. The news this week has some sad moments with a few crucial members of the gaming industry passing away and the PS4 nearing the end of its life cycle. On a good note, Fortnite gets $100 million invested by Epic Games to become an eSports game and Rocket League is bringing out a new free map with new content called “Salty Shores.” Our discussion is all about the new, game changing features of Battlefield V. It’s confirmed to be WWII telling lesser known stories of that era.We also have a new mode called Grand Operations and Combat Arms with 4 player co-op. Finally they reveal Tide of War which is an ongoing “service” that will lend itself to bringing players back for daily events to unlock new stuff. Ep 174171: Battle Chasers: Nightwar, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 and E3 2018 Predictions

E

This week Austin plays Battle Chasers: Nightwar now that it's available on the Switch. As stated on Steam, "Battle Chasers: Nightwar is an RPG inspired by the classic console greats, featuring deep dungeon diving, turn-based combat presented in a classic JRPG format, and a rich story driven by exploration of the world." In our news this week, we talk about the Call of Duty Black Ops 4 reveal. It indeed will remove a single-player campaign but adds specialists to multiplayer, brings back zombies and introduces battle royale in the form of a mode called Blackout. We also discuss No Man's Sky getting full on multiplayer alongside it's Xbox One release and more. E3 2018 is only 3 weeks away and we have our predictions episode ready for you. It's a bit of a long one but worth a listen. We talk about what we know is coming to E3 such as Death Stranding, Days Gone and The Last of Us 2. However, there are some games up in the air such as Cyberpunk 2077, the next Halo and more. Ep 173170: Light Fall, Thimbleweed Park and The Cost of Making Games

E

In this week's episode we visit some indie titles both new and old. Light Fall released by Bishop Games a few weeks ago and we played through the first few hours of these unique side scrolling platformer. In this you play a boy in a world full of darkness, creating platforms to advance further in the game. We also go back to 2017 to jump into an old-school adventure game called Thimbleweed Park. This is from the creators of Monkey Island and you find yourself solving a murder in a weird town. In the news, we talk about the new details from the Nintendo Switch online service, the real life politician running for Eve Online's in-game council and a hidden puzzle in Destiny 2 that led to treasure. This week's discussion is based on the news article that Shadow of the Tomb Raider cost around 75-100 million to make. With the cost of making games skyrocketing, how developers find ways to continue to make profit? Ep 172169: Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, Red Dead Redemption 2 and Fortnite

E

This week we play the sequel to the award-winner RPG by Obsidian Entertainment, Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire. This game changes the scenery to a series of archipelagos where you and your team follow an exciting and deep story from island to island. We also play the official release of The Forest with the help of one of our listeners Scott. He joins us to talk about why The Forest is a survival game you need to play. In our news, we focus heavily on the Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer which showcases some new story bits as well as some surprises of who and what we see from the original game. In other news, Boston Uprising is on fire in the Overwatch League and TotalBiscuit (aka the Cynical Brit) is retiring due to his health. Our discussion this week is all about the rise of Fortnite. It’s huge, there’s no doubt about that, and we dive deep into it’s slow start and rise to the top. PUBG definitely has a competitor on its hands and Fortnite shows no signs of slowing down. Ep 171168: Island Time VR, Sky and Games Becoming Movies

E

We had our big April event in Dallas where we teamed up with Flight School Studio to promote their new game Island Time VR and play some awesome favorites of our own such as Battlesloths 2025, Mario Kart 8, Brawlout and more! We also demo the upcoming game from thatgamecompany called “Sky” for iOS. Finally, Extinction released from the developers behind Killer Instinct and work on many other games and unfortunately it doesn’t quite make the mark. Our news features Apple’s leak of a VR/AR headset in the works, some hackers making cheats in PUBG, Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Nintendo’s focus at E3 this year. Our discussion is about games becoming films and whether or not we should continue to pursue them. If we do continue to make them, how can filmmakers create movies that do the game justice? With Rampage becoming a movie and things like Prince of Persia and Assassin’s Creed not doing the best, we’re not sure what to expect. Ep 170167: God of War, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 and FPS Without Single Player

E

Kratos makes an epic return with the new God of War. We didn't play anything else this week because God of War is about all we could play. It's an incredible return for the franchise for both new and old fans of the franchise. It has a 95 MetaCritic score which is incredible for a game. Listen to find out why. Our news heavily focuses on battle royale with the rumors of Black Ops 4 and Battlefield V introducing it into their games. We also talk about Campo Santo (creators of Firewatch) merging into Valve which means In the Valley of the Gods will be produced by Valve. Good news indeed. Our discussion continues the story of Black Ops 4 supposedly not having a single player campaign. We discuss the question "do FPS games need a single player anymore?" We've seen great success stories with Wolfenstein and Titanfall 2 but we can't help but wonder if it's time for them to focus on one or the other but not both. Don't forget to check our video segment on this talk Thursday at youtube.com/theinnergamer. Show Notes: 1:43 - God of War 31:15 - Gaming News 53:47 - Should FPS games keep single player? Ep 169166: Kirby Star Allies, Ni no Kuni II and Video Game Heroes

E

Kirby Star Allies is the first “first-party” Nintendo game of the year. Does it deliver strong for 2018? We talk about whether or not it is a worthwhile first party title. It features 4 player co-op and beautiful 3D platforming worlds. We also dive into Ni no Kuni II; a much-anticipated sequel to the JRPG Ni no Kuni. Brett and Austin also try out PUBG’s War Mode to see how it changes the dynamic for the battle royale game. In our news, Boss Key Productions announces their new passion project Radical Heights. It’s an 80’s inspired battle royale game show. Weird concept. Will it succeed? Sea of Thieves is getting some much needed new content, drugs were found in NES cartridges and Drake says he’ll rap about Fortnite If they make a hotline bling emote. Our discussion is submitted from a fan of the show David. He asks us the question “what makes a great video game hero?” We talk about what makes a hero and dive into whether or not a character should have a face to the name. We hope you enjoy! Ep 168165: Fan Expo Dallas, DropMix and Our Most Wanted Remastered Games

E

We just got back from Fan Expo Dallas. We’re exhausted, overwhelmed and elated at all the things we got to do and people we got to see. We talk about our highlights such as hanging out with Roadhog, meeting all kinds of amazing cosplayers and picking up some cool swag. We also play the fun music card game from last year DropMix, jump into Far Cry Arcade and talk about PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds with the new event mode. In the news, April Fool’s Day was ripe with some great jokes from game developers and publishers everywhere. We’re starting to see microtransactions fade away or developers purposely pointing out they don’t have microtransactions. Then we got news that Spyro Remastered is real and is coming in September. Our discussion this week leads from the Spyro talk where Austin and Brett talk about their top 5 most wanted remastered games. We go through the list of games that haven’t been remastered but very well should be. What would you pick? Don't forget to check our video segment on this talk Thursday at youtube.com/theinnergamer. Ep 167164: Far Cry 5, Florence and Experimental Indie Games

E

We enter Hope County this week with Far Cry 5. Does this game deliver on the promises or is Ubisoft finally reaching the end of the road? Brett also plays a simple little mobile game called Florence from Annapurna Pictures. Our news this week covers Sea of Thieves being the best-selling new IP on this generation of the Xbox, new content coming from Pokemon Go and No Man’s Sky and the drop in price of the Playstation VR. Our discussion this week is on the unfortunate state of experimental indie games. Games that push the bar but can’t reach the right audience. With the recent post-mortem from Where the Water Tastes Like Wine, we talk about ways indie developers (from a gamer perspective) can better reach people with their game. Ep 166163: Sea of Thieves, Kona and the Good and Bad of Co-Op

E

Ahoy matey! The open sea, pirate simulator adventure game has arrived from the fine folks at Rare. We got our hands on it and share our initial impressions surrounding this shared world pirate game. We find buried treasure, chickens and skeletons all over. We also play the survival game Kona that we first encountered at PAX South 2017. Devan of course can’t stop playing the Switch and he also jumps into a game called The Bridge. Is it worth jumping into? Listen to find out! In our news, Nintendo had their Spring nindies announcements with games like Banner Saga 3, West of Loathing and Light Fall coming soon to the Switch. Riot, Twitch and Blizzard are also working to minimize toxic behavior in video games and Atari unveils the name of the Ataribox: Atari VCS. Our discussion this week is on all the cooperative games coming out this year. We have a slew of them coming our way and it got us thinking: is this good or bad? We’ve been wanting good co-op games for years but now that we’re getting our hands on them we’re noticing some of their pitfalls such as finding friends to play with, matching skill levels and keeping us interested for a long period of time. Ep 165162: SXSW Gaming Expo, Fortnite and Gameplay Innovations

E

We spent our weekend at South by Southwest in Austin, TX for the Gaming Expo. We met some incredible people with remarkable stories, lots of laughs and some fantastic games. We talk all about the games we got to play while on the show floor including West of Loathing, Once Upon a Coma and more. We also finally jump into Fortnite Battle Royale, afraid to escape from PUBG and find it to be much better than we anticipated. Dare we say hooked? 600,000 people tuned in this past week to watch Drake and Ninja play Fortnite so that was partially why we jumped in. In addition, Arlington, TX of all places is getting a huge eSports arena and we learn the height of Mario character’s based on Luigi’s penis size. This week, we sit down and discussion innovative gameplay mechanics. There are many things we take for granted these days such as auto-saves, destructible environments and even jumping. Can you believe we used to not be able to jump in games? We discuss all of the major gameplay mechanics and how they changed the way we play games forever. Ep 164161: Dragon Quest Builders, Super Smash Bros for Switch and The Division 2

E

This week is light on new games but heavy on games you may have missed but should keep your eye on. We finish our discussion on Owlboy for the Switch and revisit Shovel Knight Treasure Trove. Luis tries out the Dragon Quest Builders release for the Switch and how it melds Minecraft with RPG elements really well. Finally, Brett tests out the Kirby Star Allies demo ahead of it's launch next week. In our news, there is more talk on video game violence at the White House, Nintendo announces Super Smash Bros for the Switch and Valve is making games again. Will we see Half-Life 3? Call of Duty also reveals Black Ops 4 as their 2018 title. Our discussion is lengthy but in depth this week. We look back on Ubisoft's Games as a Service model starting with Rainbow Six Siege. We explore how it's evolved from that game on into For Honor, Ghost Recon Wildlands, The Crew 2, Far Cry 5 and soon to be The Division 2. Ubisoft is great at coming up with a lot of ideas but never quite delivers on making any one of them perfect. Will they pull it off with The Division 2? E

Enter the dwarves in the new game from Ghost Ship Games: Deep Rock Galactic. In this game, you and up to 3 friends venture underground to fight off aliens as you mine in the caves of a planet called Hoxxes IV. It feels like Minecraft meets Left 4 Dead. We also try out Owlboy on the Nintendo Switch and find it’s made for that system. In our gaming news, we have a leak on Battlefield 5, more news on Trump and the video game industry and Brawlhalla being purchased by Ubisoft. Our discussion this week is on the one year anniversary of the Nintendo Switch. We go through the past year and cover the highlights. We also talk about some hidden gems on the Switch worth checking out (aside from the popular titles like Zelda and Super Mario.) Ep 162159: Vicious Attack Llama Apocalypse, Burnout Paradise and Video Games as Art

E

Welcome to the last episode of February! We have some exciting games to share with you, both technically indie titles and both intense 4 player co-op games. Vicious Attack Llama Apocalypse is just like it sounds...wait. How does that even sound? This may be the first ever mass-slaughter llama game ever. It’s a rogue-like top-down twin-stick shooter where you and up to 4 friends can fight off the zombie horde of llama’s. It’s insane but a blast to play. We also try out the Warhammer: Vermintide 2 beta which comes out March 8th. This game is everything you loved from the first one but improved in every way. In our gaming news, President Trump talks about how video games have an effect on people’s mental health, we disagree but so do a lot of other people. What’s new? We also have Burnout Paradise coming back in a remastered form, Nintendo stole the show at the DICE awards and somehow played 200+ hours of Kingdom Hearts in the first island. For our discussion, one of our listeners submitted a question that we all often ask: are video games art? We dive into the question itself and explain why they are indeed art and provide a huge collection of examples. The other question is whether or not it’s gone mainstream and although it’s getting that way, we’re not there yet. All of this and more can be garnered from this fun and far reaching discussion. Ep 161158: Shadow of the Colossus, Aegis Defenders and Evolution of Game Franchises

E

What is touted as one of the greatest games of all time is back for a full remake on PS4: Shadow of the Colossus. We play through half of it and share our first and returning impressions on this game that wasn’t a huge hit, but created a cult following for years to come. Team Ico created this game after their first game, Ico. They then went on to create The Last Guardian that released last year. We also play the new indie title Aegis Defenders which combines platforming with tower defense elements. We had them on the podcast in episode 131 and we’re quite impressed with the final outcome. We also have some positive words to say after diving deeper into the story on Celeste. In the news this week, Supercell makes a bunch of money without releasing a new game, Overwatch League brings on their first female player and Atari is getting into cryptocurrency. We also talk about the possible Spyro the Dragon Remaster coming later this year and some crazy stories surrounding PlayerUnknown’s: Battlegrounds. Here's the link to our naked man conversation. Our discussion is all about evolving video game franchises. We look at games like Fortnite and Borderlands and how they evolved over time before they even launched. We also look at post-launch changes with games like Far Cry and Saint’s Row. Each one had its ups and downs but it’s interesting to explore the inner workings of a studio and why they make the decisions they make when building a game. Ep 160157: Celeste, Brawlout and Creativity vs. Cost in Games

E

Well that sure took us by surprise. Right before Valentine’s Day, we’ve fallen in love with a new game called Celeste. This is a little indie platformer where you climb a mountain in one of the most challenging, yet rewarding experiences we’ve ever played. It’s gorgeous, difficult as all hell and the story and soundtrack are wonderful. We also play Brawlout, a game similar to Super Smash Bros. exclusive to the Switch. It also has The Drifter and Juan from Guacamelee. We’re cool with that. In our news, one man spends too much time playing games, Nintendo has obsoleted itself and Destiny 2 sold really well. We also talk a lot about Kingdom Hearts 3 and it’s awesome new trailer with Mike Wazowski himself. Our discussion this week comes from our Patreon subscriber Mark Jensen. He wanted us to explore the idea of creativity versus cost in games. Where do developers draw the line in making revenue stream systems and focus on making a good game? It’s a fun discussion that goes on several tangents we didn’t expect, but we promise it’s worth the ride. Thanks again Mark for the topic. Ep 159156: Battalion 1944, Monster Hunter: World and Games for Streaming

E

This week we try the next attempt for "boots on the ground" gameplay with Battalion 1944. It's an indie game published by Square Enix attempting to bring back the magic of WWII shooters from the early 2000's. Does it succeed? We also revisit Monster Hunter: World because that game is so good. We can't get enough of it. We're also learning how deep the systems go in this game. In our news, we talk about all the announcements from Electronic Arts such as the delay of Anthem, a Battlefield confirmed for 2018 and more. Nintendo reveals a lot such as a Mario Kart mobile game, the expansiveness of their Nintendo Labo Kit and the September launch of the online service. We also got a sudden announcement of PUBG meets Twisted Metal. Greatest idea ever or biggest flop? Our discussion this week is how streaming is affecting video game design. With games like S.O.S. being built around a streaming audience, what does that mean for the future of video game design? Will we see more developers consciously making design decisions to satisfy the needs of audiences? Don't forget to check our video segment on this talk Thursday at youtube.com/theinnergamer. Ep 158155: Monster Hunter World, Dragonball FighterZ and eSports

E

The games are starting to arrive for 2018 and we sure start off with a bang. Monster Hunter is back and this time with an open world and available on the Playstation 4, Xbox and PC. Monster Hunter: World is absolutely incredible and more accessible than ever before. That’s not to say it isn’t challenging, because it is. Capcom is off to a great start this year and we don’t even have Mega Man 11 yet. We also play Dragonball FighterZ, the highly anticipated fighter game in the Dragonball universe. We don’t spend a lot of time on it but it definitely hits home for us. Devan returns to the Darkest Dungeon with the release on the Nintendo Switch complete with all the DLC. In our gaming news, we talk a lot about streaming such as Facebook entering the game and Snoop Dogg pretending to play. With the closed beta for Sea of Thieves, some new secrets are revealed about the game that could be coming in the future. In the bad news, Paragon shuts down in April. Finally, our discussion this week is on the rise of eSports. With the success of the Overwatch League we talk about what this means for the sport in general and how it’s growth has been over the years. We also talk about the maturity in the industry and how gamers have a chance to make this sport unlike the others since it’s still in its infancy. Ep 157154: InnerSpace, Nintendo Labo and Co-op Games in 2018

E

InnerSpace came out last week and we got a chance to play and share our impressions. InnerSpace is a new exploratory adventure game from PolyKnight Games. Think of it as a mix between Journey and Abzu with a touch of progression. Austin jumps back into Divinity: Original Sin 2 after our awesome interview from PAX South with the team at Larian Studios. In the news this week, Nintendo announces their new "toy-con" kits called Nintendo Labo. These are cardboard cutouts that allow you to make your Switch into a bunch of interactive toys such as a fishing rod, piano, RC car and even a robot! Fortnite is seeing huge success after the release of their Battle Royale mode, Overwatch League's Dallas team runs into some trouble with a player and Dr. Disrespect is back after a 2 week hiatus? Finally, our discussion this week is over cooperative games of 2018. This year we're seeing a big shift in developers diversifying the co-op experience and we explore how they're doing that. To our surprise, Microsoft is a huge part of that conversation. Don't forget to check our video segment on this talk Thursday at youtube.com/theinnergamer. Enter our Episode 150 contest here: www.theinnergamer.net/ep150 We have a huge episode for you this week. The holidays are upon us and our annual holiday gift guide is back! We even have some off the wall stuff such as books, board games and more. One of the biggest deals of last week was the release and controversy behind Star Wars Battlefront 2. Brett plays it and shares his thoughts on the campaign and the multiplayer which is much improved over the last one. However, with all the good comes some not so good. They added microtransactions and then took them away over the course of the week. We talk about what happened and why the Internet is going crazy about it. We also talk a little about about Super Mario Odyssey and how that game is still good to lighten the mood. Finally, in our gaming news segment we discuss Mario going to the big screen again, Gamestop halting their used games subscription service, and Cyberpunk 2077 adding some online components for long term success. Ep 151148: South Park Phone Destroyer, Civilization VI and Video Game Sequels

E

South Park Phone Destroyer has arrived on phones everywhere! Is this just another mobile game or is it what South Park does best? We also have Luis back on the cast to talk about his crazy gaming escapades with Civilization VI, completing Cuphead and going old school with Turok. In the news, EA acquires Respawn Entertainment, creators of Titanfall. Telltale Games lays off a quarter of its staff as it begins to focus tighter on future games. Niantic also reveals their new Harry Potter AR game as a follow up to last year's Pokemon GO. Our discussion this week is all about video game sequels. Many franchises didn't take off until after the first game. We explore how and why this occurred with three types of games: games that actually got good after the first one, games that weren't recognized until after the first one and games that sucked until the second one released. We have an interesting list and would love to hear your feedback and any games you think we missed!
