The Inner Gamer Podcast

What an episode we have this week! Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, Super Mario Odyssey and Assassin's Creed: Origins dominate and we played them all. Each game is completely unique and it's probably the first time in history we've had this level of quality out in one day (not to mention Stranger Things Season 2.) In our news, we talk about the death of the Kinect, support for Gamecube controllers on the Switch, Animal Crossing for mobile and the remastering of L.A. Noire. We also talk about the length of the new Battlefront 2 campaign. It's roughly 5-7 hours. Is that too short or just what we wanted without overdoing it? Finally, it's Halloween and you know what that means? Lot's of scares. We go around the table and reminisce on our favorite horror games and why they scared us. In this episode, Charlie returns to share his impressions on the very unique and stylized game Cuphead. It looks like a 1930's cartoon, plays like Metal Slug and is incredibly hard to play. We also get our hands on South Park: The Fractured but Whole. This is the next game from the minds of Trey Parker and Matt Stone and it's 20+ hours of insanity with a heck of a lot of fart jokes. Find out why this is one you don't want to miss. During the news, we talk about Activision's patent on hidden microtransaction "sells" during matchmaking. They basically want to pair you up with players that have goodies you would be enticed to buy. We also talk about how much money Gabe Newell made last year, the Switch update and Vermintide 2 not selling loot boxes. Finally, our discussion this week is on the changing state of single player experiences. With the closing of Visceral at Electronic Arts, we wonder what triple A companies are doing with their single player games. Visceral was making an action adventure, linear story campaign in the Star Wars universe and it's getting a "pivot." That also means we won't see it until at least 2020. We review the highly anticipated sequel to Shadow of Mordor, Middle Earth Shadow of War. We discuss the loot box system, the changes the nemesis system, the story and all the new features and additions they've added since the first game. We also review the very beautiful mobile title Monument Valley 2 and talk about Iron Banner now available in Destiny 2 with all it's changes. First up, we visit the days of old with the Super Nintendo Classic Edition and talk about our hands-on experience with the new console. We also talk about the Switch-exclusive title Golf Story. It's an RPG/sports game where you improve your golf swing and your story overall with the people you meet. Austin plays Kingdom: New Lands, a tower defense game where you play as a king in a "new land" and hire your people to build and defend your bases for you. Finally we get our hands on the Call of Duty WWII Public Beta and talk about the pros and cons of the highly anticipated new game from Activision and Sledgehammer Games. We have a lot of new games to cover this week, a few older ones and some fresh ones that we still can't stop talking about. Everybody's Golf came out a few weeks ago and we've finally gotten our hands on that. It's Hot Shots Golf but better and with friends it's amazing. We also test out Divinity Original Sin 2 and share our initial impressions on how much it's like Dungeons and Dragons for video games. Rayman Legends also dropped on the Switch and we decide to visit that game and what it's like playing it on the portable Nintendo console. In our news segment, we dive into Fortnite's announcement of their Battle Royale mode and PUBG's response to it. We also talk on the Tokyo Game Show which had a good amount of release dates revealed for Sony included a January release for Monster Hunter Worlds. Our discussion topic this week is over Destiny 2. Now that we've had a few weeks with the game we wanted to talk about the changes we've seen between D1 and D2. We cover differences in story, the world, progression and the ever popular raids. This week was full of great news. Apple announced their new iPhone's which resulted in more details on ARKit such as a cool augmented reality game called The Machines. They also announced an Apple exclusive from thatgamecompany called "Sky." We also had the Nintendo Direct which revealed the name for Kirby as Kirby Star Allies. We also have Doom and Wolfenstein 2 coming to the Switch and more. In our games segment, we talk more on Destiny 2 such as strikes, adventures and more. We also get our hands on the upcoming Square Enix game, Project Octopath Traveler. It's a 2D-HD game with a unique art style. Destiny 2 is here. Is it better than the original? Did it fix the issues we had with the first one? We explore the new additions, the story missions, the crucible and more with Destiny and how it's changed from the first game. We were surprised at the quality of this game for having such a short time between announcement and launch but it's very good. We also talk about the latest DLC from Little Nightmares. What do an old school platformer, Devil May Cry and Chloe Fraser have in common? Nothing really other than they're all parts of this week's games! We review Sonic Mania on the Nintendo Switch, the latest Sonic game which melds the best of the best together into one neat little package. We also review Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. This game is from the creators of Devil May Cry and is considered a AAA indie game. It's 1 part walking simulator, 1 part fighting game and 1 part awesome. Then we have the game we've all been looking forward to...Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. In this game, we play as Chloe Fraser with our sidekick Nadine from Uncharted 4. It's still a blast of a game and we share our insight. In our news segment, we talk about Microsoft in talks with Sony on crossplay, a new game reveal, some updates for Splatoon 2 and the HTC Vive price drop. Then Bethesda dropped the price of Brink because "why not?" Our discussion this week is on two big conventions. One was in our home of Dallas/Fort Worth: Quakecon 2017. It's the biggest LAN party around and we attended to check out what games they had to offer (included Wolfenstein 2), the competitions and of course the amazing PC rigs. This week we escape prison and play tug of war! We share our impressions on The Escapists 2, the prison break 8-bit game that releases today. The Escapists 2 introduces multiplayer where you and your friends work together to escape from a variety of prison scenarios by crafting, stealing, brawling and ultimately escaping. We also review Nidhogg 2 where you and another play also brawl in a tug of war style of game. It's incredibly brutal and bloody and awesome. We also play Oceanhorn which is out now on the Nintendo Switch. It turns out its a bit of a Zelda-Lite kind of game ported from the mobile market. In our news segment, we talk about No Man's Sky actually reaching it's potential it sought after. Star Wars Battlefront 2 may also be reaching that same potential with some epic space battles. Finally, we talk a lot about what to expect from Gamescom including news from Blizzard, Sea of Thieves and Destiny. Finally, our discussion this week centers around the Xbox One X. With Crackdown 3 pushed back to 2018, the only exclusive with 4K coming to the system we know of is Forza Motorsport 7. What does that mean for the future of the console? The highly anticipated title from Epic Games has finally arrived. Fortnite is a "co-op sandbox survival game" where you build bases, fight off zombies and work together to collect massive amounts of loot. It was one of the first games announced for Unreal Engine 4 and is finally here. We break down the good and the bad. We also played through Tacoma and share our thoughts on that highly anticipated follow up to 2013's smash hit Gone Home, what many call the first "walking simulator." It's a sci-fi walking simulator where you land on a space station to discover what happened on the months leading up to today. In our news segment, we talk about a lot of new card games ironically such as one in the works from Gearbox and Valve's first game in years called Artifact. A lot of story details have emerged from Call of Duty WWII and we may actually be excited about this one! Finally, our discussion this week is all about microtransactions and loot boxes. Undertale is a very special RPG game that came out on PC last year. It's coming out on Playstation 4 August 15th and we reviewed in in preparation for that. The characters are great, the gameplay is simple and the love is in the air. We also revisit Splatoon 2 and the flaws we've encountered as of late and talk about the new update for PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. In our gaming news, we have Stardew Valley Multiplayer, a game releases 20 years after it started development and Blizzard is working on some new IP's. This week we play the highly anticipated game Pyre from Supergiant Games. Pyre is from the creators of Bastion and Transistor. In Pyre, you play through an original story in which the choices you make impact the direction and can actually take the story it totally different directions. They also created their own sport in this game...seriously. We also have a follow up to Splatoon 2 where we talk more on the other modes such as Salmon Run as well as a look at the progression system now that we've played it more. In our gaming news, we have several upcoming releases and our free games of the month for August including Just Cause 3! We talk about Niantic getting sued for their failed Fest, Nintendo Switch selling like hotcakes, Dragon Quest and a huge Super Mario 64 speed run. Aegis Defenders is an upcoming 2d metroidvania-style platformer where you take the role of two characters: a granddaughter and a grandfather. They work together to solve puzzles, defeat bosses and more. The team at GUTS Department has managed to fuse this fun gameplay with another gameplay element: tower defense. It's a fun game and we talk about how the game came to be, the struggles encountered with building a game from nothing and some fun conversations on favorite games and more. It's a cleverly designed and beautifully illustrated game about a cat named Mae who returns to her home Possum Springs and finds things are like she left them. What can be done to improve this in 2017? We run into a lot of problems with games releasing on day 1 broken, with bad multiplayer or with a lackluster port to a console or PC. It was a big week in news as we had the Consumer Electronics Show. A lot of great new tech was announced such as a three screen laptop by Razer, a projection system to expand your screen in your room called Project Ariana and some really expensive screens and laptops with 4K, 8K and lots of RAM. We also talk about Overwatch's new update, Steam is bringing controller support to all games and GTA 5's map is expanding. On the video game front we talk about our experiences with Resident Evil Remastered and Day of the Tentacle, a remake from a classic game by LucasArts. In our discussion, we explore video games in education. What can be done to make them a larger part of education? Why haven't they moved further than they have? What kinds of experiences are already out there for kids? It's a different topic but one we had a lot of fun exploring.
