Ep 157154: InnerSpace, Nintendo Labo and Co-op Games in 2018
EInnerSpace came out last week and we got a chance to play and share our impressions. InnerSpace is a new exploratory adventure game from PolyKnight Games. Think of it as a mix between Journey and Abzu with a touch of progression. Austin jumps back into Divinity: Original Sin 2 after our awesome interview from PAX South with the team at Larian Studios. In the news this week, Nintendo announces their new "toy-con" kits called Nintendo Labo. These are cardboard cutouts that allow you to make your Switch into a bunch of interactive toys such as a fishing rod, piano, RC car and even a robot! Fortnite is seeing huge success after the release of their Battle Royale mode, Overwatch League's Dallas team runs into some trouble with a player and Dr. Disrespect is back after a 2 week hiatus? Finally, our discussion this week is over cooperative games of 2018. This year we're seeing a big shift in developers diversifying the co-op experience and we explore how they're doing that. To our surprise, Microsoft is a huge part of that conversation. Don't forget to check our video segment on this talk Thursday at youtube.com/theinnergamer. EEnter our Episode 150 contest here: www.theinnergamer.net/ep150 We have a huge episode for you this week. The holidays are upon us and our annual holiday gift guide is back! The cast picks their favorite gear and games for the holiday season. What monitors are worth getting? What kind of console system is the best deal? What about the best games you may have missed? We even have some off the wall stuff such as books, board games and more. One of the biggest deals of last week was the release and controversy behind Star Wars Battlefront 2. Brett plays it and shares his thoughts on the campaign and the multiplayer which is much improved over the last one. However, with all the good comes some not so good. They added microtransactions and then took them away over the course of the week. We talk about what happened and why the Internet is going crazy about it. We also talk a little about about Super Mario Odyssey and how that game is still good to lighten the mood. Finally, in our gaming news segment we discuss Mario going to the big screen again, Gamestop halting their used games subscription service, and Cyberpunk 2077 adding some online components for long term success. Oh and Blizzard poked fun at EA with a comment on Twitter about how Starcraft doesn’t have microtransactions! Ep 151148: South Park Phone Destroyer, Civilization VI and Video Game Sequels
ESouth Park Phone Destroyer has arrived on phones everywhere! Is this just another mobile game or is it what South Park does best? We also have Luis back on the cast to talk about his crazy gaming escapades with Civilization VI, completing Cuphead and going old school with Turok. In the news, EA acquires Respawn Entertainment, creators of Titanfall. Telltale Games lays off a quarter of its staff as it begins to focus tighter on future games. Niantic also reveals their new Harry Potter AR game as a follow up to last year's Pokemon GO. Our discussion this week is all about video game sequels. Many franchises didn't take off until after the first game. We explore how and why this occurred with three types of games: games that actually got good after the first one, games that weren't recognized until after the first one and games that sucked until the second one released. We have an interesting list and would love to hear your feedback and any games you think we missed! ECall of Duty returns to its roots with World War 2. Does it truly deliver the boots on the ground experience they promised? Austin and Brett give their impressions on every aspect of the game from the single player campaign to zombies. Devan joins us in talking about Super Mario Odyssey and Austin shares how Assassin's Creed: Origins is his biggest surprise this year. PUBG is finally coming to Xbox and leaving Early Access on PC and Razer is making a gaming phone. Finally, Sony Playstation dropped a ton of new announcements, trailers and more at Paris Games Week. We get The Last of Us Part II with a new trailer, some moral dilemmas with Detroit: Become Human and this new tech Playstation is pushing called PlayLink. Ep 149146: Super Mario Odyssey, Wolfenstein 2, AC: Origins and Horror Games
EWhat an episode we have this week! Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus, Super Mario Odyssey and Assassin's Creed: Origins dominate and we played them all. Each game is completely unique and it's probably the first time in history we've had this level of quality out in one day (not to mention Stranger Things Season 2.) In our news, we talk about the death of the Kinect, support for Gamecube controllers on the Switch, Animal Crossing for mobile and the remastering of L.A. Noire. We also talk about the length of the new Battlefront 2 campaign. It's roughly 5-7 hours. Is that too short or just what we wanted without overdoing it? Finally, it's Halloween and you know what that means? Lot's of scares. We go around the table and reminisce on our favorite horror games and why they scared us. We have a wide spanning list that covers a lot. What games have scared you? Let us know on Facebook! Ep 148145: South Park: The Fractured but Whole, Cuphead and Single Player Games
EIn this episode, Charlie returns to share his impressions on the very unique and stylized game Cuphead. It looks like a 1930's cartoon, plays like Metal Slug and is incredibly hard to play. We also get our hands on South Park: The Fractured but Whole. This is the next game from the minds of Trey Parker and Matt Stone and it's 20+ hours of insanity with a heck of a lot of fart jokes. Find out why this is one you don't want to miss. During the news, we talk about Activision's patent on hidden microtransaction "sells" during matchmaking. They basically want to pair you up with players that have goodies you would be enticed to buy. We also talk about how much money Gabe Newell made last year, the Switch update and Vermintide 2 not selling loot boxes. Finally, our discussion this week is on the changing state of single player experiences. With the closing of Visceral at Electronic Arts, we wonder what triple A companies are doing with their single player games. Visceral was making an action adventure, linear story campaign in the Star Wars universe and it's getting a "pivot." That also means we won't see it until at least 2020. What do you think about single player games today? Ep 147144: Shadow of War, Monument Valley 2 and Weak Franchise Releases
EWe review the highly anticipated sequel to Shadow of Mordor, Middle Earth Shadow of War. We discuss the loot box system, the changes the nemesis system, the story and all the new features and additions they've added since the first game. We also review the very beautiful mobile title Monument Valley 2 and talk about Iron Banner now available in Destiny 2 with all it's changes. For news this week, we have Humble Bundle getting acquired by IGN, Fortnite Battle Royale reaching 10 MILLION PLAYERS and microtransactions and DLC making the gaming industry a lot of money. Oh and John Carpenter is dedicating his life to Destiny 2. Finally, our discussion this week is all about the franchises we love. From Halo to Call of Duty, we break down those franchises that have impacted us in so many ways and what happens when they release a game that doesn't strike gold. What are some games you remember being bad titles in an otherwise successful video game franchise? Ep 146143: Star Wars Battlefront 2, Super Mario Odyssey and Video Game Difficulty
EIn this episode, we play Star Wars Battlefront 2 and discuss our first impressions with the beta. Is it the game we've all been waiting for? Devan finally gets his hands on Project Octopath Traveler and loves it. In our gaming news, we talk about the new Super Mario Odyssey trailer, Destiny 2 new updates, Stardew Valley and Master Chief. Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice is also doing a special event today, if you buy their game they'll donate the proceeds to charity for World Mental Health Day. Finally, our discussion this week is on the evolution of video game difficulty. When games first arrived, there was no tutorial or ways to change the difficulty setting. How did that evolve over time? We also explore what games should have difficulty settings and which ones should let you fail. What game has the best tutorial for you? Ep 145142.2: Game to Grow Interview
EIn a very special episode of The Inner Gamer, we have an interview with Adam Johns and Adam Davis, founders of Game to Grow. They run therapeutic social skills groups using tabletop games and video games as a medium to help kids grow socially. "Game to Grow believes that games of all kinds can improve people’s lives, and these benefits are not limited to helping youth. In the years to come Game to Grow will expand to serve these populations through providing direct services and offering support and resources to other providers so that they can use the power of intentional gaming to provide individuals in their care lasting life-enriching benefits." - Game to Grow Vision In this interview, we go over their idea for making this non-profit, the successes they've had thus far and their future plans to expand to help more people than ever before. Find them online at: www.gametogrow.org Support their IndieGoGo Campaign at: https://www.generosity.com/fundraising/don-t-just-game-game-to-grow Please share this with at least one person, I think it's important we spread their message and what they're doing to make sure we help kids game to grow. EThis week we play some really exciting and unique new and returning games. First up, we visit the days of old with the Super Nintendo Classic Edition and talk about our hands-on experience with the new console. We also talk about the Switch-exclusive title Golf Story. It's an RPG/sports game where you improve your golf swing and your story overall with the people you meet. In our news segment, we dive into Fortnite's announcement of their Battle Royale mode and PUBG's response to it. We also talk on the Tokyo Game Show which had a good amount of release dates revealed for Sony included a January release for Monster Hunter Worlds. Our discussion topic this week is over Destiny 2. Ep 141139: Destiny 2, Lawbreakers and How Games Keep Us Hooked
EDestiny 2 is here. Is it better than the original? Did it fix the issues we had with the first one? We explore the new additions, the story missions, the crucible and more with Destiny and how it's changed from the first game. We also have some news with Lawbreakers, Blizzard building an eSports arena in Los Angeles and South Park's difficulty slider. Apparently Nintendo also decided Mario isn't a plumber anymore. Our discussion this week is on how games keep us hooked. A rising concept is "games as a service" in which a game has you purchase it, but offers additional content later on for added fees or with microtransactions. We see it most commonly with MMO's but it's also in games like Overwatch, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and more. What do you think about games as a service? What should be made into one? Ep 140138: Mario + Rabbids, Destiny 2 and Environmental Storytelling
EThis week we have Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle as our main focus. This is a deep game and as such we have a lot to talk about. We were surprised at the quality of this game for having such a short time between announcement and launch but it's very good. We also talk about the latest DLC from Little Nightmares. In our news, we have the free games for Xbox One and Playstation 4 for September. There are some good ones including Oxenfree and Infamous Second Son. We also discuss the Nintendo Switch Nindie lineup, 343 Industries working on VR/AR tech, Destiny 2 and more. In our discussion, we break down environmental storytelling and how powerful it is for a game. We use examples from games like What Remains of Edith Finch, Bloodbourne and even Overwatch to delve into how game developers tell a story in a unique way via narrative, investigative and atmospheric. Ep 139137: Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Sonic Mania and Gamescom 2017
EWhat do an old school platformer, Devil May Cry and Chloe Fraser have in common? Nothing really other than they're all parts of this week's games! We review Sonic Mania on the Nintendo Switch, the latest Sonic game which melds the best of the best together into one neat little package. We also review Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. This game is from the creators of Devil May Cry and is considered a AAA indie game. It's 1 part walking simulator, 1 part fighting game and 1 part awesome. Then we have the game we've all been looking forward to...Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. In this game, we play as Chloe Fraser with our sidekick Nadine from Uncharted 4. It's still a blast of a game and we share our insight. In our news segment, we talk about Microsoft in talks with Sony on crossplay, a new game reveal, some updates for Splatoon 2 and the HTC Vive price drop. Then Bethesda dropped the price of Brink because "why not?" Our discussion this week is on two big conventions. One was in our home of Dallas/Fort Worth: Quakecon 2017. It's the biggest LAN party around and we attended to check out what games they had to offer (included Wolfenstein 2), the competitions and of course the amazing PC rigs. Then we go over all the news and events from Gamescom 2017. It's quite a bit and we break it down the best we can. There's a lot of good stuff in there so you don't want to miss it! In our news segment, we talk about No Man's Sky actually reaching it's potential it sought after. Star Wars Battlefront 2 may also be reaching that same potential with some epic space battles. Finally, we talk a lot about what to expect from Gamescom including news from Blizzard, Sea of Thieves and Destiny. Finally, our discussion this week centers around the Xbox One X. Ep 112Episode 111: For Honor, Nintendo Switch Leak and Video Game Launches
EWe've played a ton of For Honor and have a lot to say about it. It's a brand new game with knights, samurais and vikings and it's quite a change from previous Ubisoft titles. With our news, we talk about the Nintendo Switch leak showing off the UI and much more. Valve has lost a key writer and Pokemon GO releases 80 new Pokemon! We also talk about Call of Duty going back to its roots and what that means for the franchise. Our discussion is all about the frustrating state of day 1 purchases. What can be done to improve this in 2017? We run into a lot of problems with games releasing on day 1 broken, with bad multiplayer or with a lackluster port to a console or PC. We talk about what developers and publishers can do to make this a better experience for the player. Don't forget we have our contest! Share our Solar Flare comic post on Facebook and get the entire series signed by the writer himself! Deadline is February 25th.
