Balancing Out Your Hormones The Natural Way with Kate Vazquez
In this week's episode of The Girlfriend Doctor, we had a conversation with the amazing Kate Vazquez. Kate is the co-founder and medical mastermind behind Radiant Health. She has worked as a Physician Assistant in cardiology, the emergency room, and urgent care. Today she shares the secrets to preventing estrogen dominance which can be detrimental to a woman's physical, emotional, and psychological health. In this talk, Kate gets into what estrogen dominance actually is, the 5 main telltale signs of hormone imbalance, how to develop estrogen metabolism, the importance of staying in a parasympathetic nervous system, and more. Of course, we also talk about how cleaning our gut can have tremendously significant results when starting to rebalance the hormones in our bodies. So often, we may think that depression, anxiety, and overall stress can't have many physiological effects on our bodies but that is far from the truth. Kate makes it very known that stress can be of the most exacerbating factors when it comes to hormone imbalance, so it's immensely important to find ways to manage stress, and it starts with eating clean, exercising, and other practices such as meditation or reading. Tune in to find out more key tips to overcome hormone imbalances to begin living happier and healthier! For those who want to take it a step further, be sure to pick up her book, Estrogen is a B*tch (2021), available on Amazon! "If you think about it, our hormones are constantly fluctuating and so we go through menopause. And so before that time, we have a lot of estrogen in our system before ovulation, which is in the first half of our menstrual cycle." "So we always have a lot of estrogen in our system but we need that balance with progesterone in the remedial phase to help balance that out… So the problem is when there isn't enough of that progesterone to balance out that estrogen." "What I discovered is there are 5 telltale signs of hormone imbalance. The first one is the dysfunctional period that you were talking about. And that's because we're not getting that increase and decline of the progesterone." Sunlighten Sauna - Infrared As A Foundation Of Health with Connie Zack
On this week's episode of the Girlfriend Doctor Show, I had a very special conversation with infrared light specialist, Connie Zack. Connie is the co-owner (along with her husband) of Sunlighten, the manufacturer of the first saunas to offer near, mid, and far infrared technology. Her background is in executive marketing for Procter & Gamble's pharmaceutical division, so it was very interesting to hear how she shifted from that to selling saunas. In this talk, Connie discusses what events lead to her becoming interested in infrared therapy and saunas, the many benefits that come from saunas and infrared light, how sweat can detect more toxins than blood or urine, and much more. Her products are on sale right now, and viewers of this show can receive up to $600 off her products! The infrared light that beams from the sun is so very important but not many can have the time to go outside when there's light to absorb that radiant light, so these types of products are essential to that crowd. It's great for our skin, our body, digestion, and for a healthy state of mind. Connie is truly an expert on this stuff so I highly recommend you tune in to find out how these products can serve you and your family. "There's scientific data that shows sweating releases… you can detect more toxins from sweat than you can blood and urine." "There was a study done years ago that showed people tested their bodies for mercury in their blood and urine, but then they tested their sweat and they had significantly more mercury released through sweat. And there was a lot of people who had zero mercury in blood and urine." "But if you're just new, you're getting started and detoxing is your thing, far-infrared… you need to get the highest quantity of far-infrared as possible." "That's what makes sunlight so special. You can't get more far-infrared into your body than with the sunlight and sauna… you can then start to add other wavelengths." "What I loved about the lumineer is when you travel and go places in your car, you can't always have your sauna with you… you can take with you. There's four different heads."
Food Systems on Fire - Medical Concerns from Endocrine Disruptors In The Food Chain
On this week's episode of the Girlfriend Doctor Show, we're doing things a little differently. I attended the Women in Tech Global Summit 2022 in Paris, France. Under the High Patronage of Ms. Elizabeth Moreno, French Minister for Gender Equality, Diversity, and Equal Opportunities, the theme is 'HERoes Shaping Tomorrow', which celebrates women across the world who are the Shakers, Makers, and Innovators of our new society and economy. The panel of speakers I was a part of consisted of high-caliber people and the talk revolved mainly around food supply and how the quality of our food has been gradually declining. Terri Cochran, a past guest here on the Girlfriend Doctor, emphasized how not only is the food quality decreasing, but the way in which we manage and waste it is slowly leading our manmade emissions here in our home, earth. Overall, the discussion was very fun but also essential because we need to become more aware of our actions. 70% of food is actually wasted in the home, and though it may only seem like a waste of money, wasting food is also a huge contributor to climate change. We need to come together and find solutions to the problems humanity is facing, and it starts with discussions like these. Tune in to find out how we can overcome these global issues! KEY TAKEAWAYS [10:30] Food storage and waste contributes to 35% of total manmade emissions [13:24] Diabetes and obesity in the country is growing exponentially [18:32] How Food Cloud is feeding the world [22:04] We waste a lot of food and water [22:54] Dr. Anna's take on 'Food is Everything' [32:55] Becoming more conscious of food waste in the home SPEAKERS Teri Cochrane - CEO and Longevity Expert - Beyond Nutrition John D. Bolten - Associate Program Manager - NASA Applied Sciences Program Aoibheann O'Brien - Co-founder and Director of FoodCloud MEMORABLE QUOTES "With the war in Ukraine right now with Russia, there's many economic considerations; we're seeing at our gas pumps… but more importantly… the number 1 country where we get our fertilizer ash from is Ukraine." "Food was everything to me because food was killing my son, and food has saved my son." "We need to look at the changing trajectory of our world because it is changing in an alarming rate and food systems sit in the center." "Food production storage and waste currently contributes to 35% of total manmade emissions that swarm at the transportation sector, and by the year 2050, will represent 70% of total emissions." "1 out of 4 persons in the US cannot meet the eligibility requirements for military service because of obesity alone. That's a national security crisis." "1/3 of our global food is wasted and ¼ of our global water use goes to wasted food." "Our women in STEM can help fortify this food that becomes wasted then ends up landfills. We all have an emissions aspect to this. So I think this is one of the most brilliant solutions." "In my three decades of practicing medicine, I have seen an increase in infertility, ADHD, PSOS, and cancers, at an earlier and earlier age." "It's estimated that in order to sustain support for an additional 2.2 billion people, we'll need to more than double our food production, unless we embrace the solutions that we're talking about here." "70% of food is actually wasted in the home. I know people think if I waste this, it's a waste of money but it's actually a major contribution to climate change and it's the one thing that we can take action on three times a day." How to Sustain a Healthy and Prosperous Relationship with Marla Mattenson
In this week's episode of the Girlfriend Doctor Show, we had a delightful conversation about love, hate, and all things in between with Marla Mattenson. Marla is a an award-winning author, Sex-Ed teacher, spiritual life coach, and much more. She, along with her husband Julian, are the founders Intimacy Experts, a program built to guide couples through every aspect in order to form a blissful and honest marriage and communion. Of course we branch off in many different topics but for the most part, Marla discusses the reasons for high numbers of divorce, the many layers of intimacy, being extremely transparent to prevent dishonesty and cheating, and techniques to help guide couples to break bad habits. One concept that Marla really emphasized is that happiness is not a forever feeling. One is going to be down in the dumps one way or another, at one time or another and mistakes may be made in the dumps. One makes mistakes when one is in the dumps but it should not a time to shame or judge a partner, it is a time evaluate not only the mistake but the actions that led to that mistake from both angles. Be sure to tune in to find out more about sustaining a prosperous relationship with your other half! KEY TAKEAWAYS [1:31] Reasons for high numbers of divorce [5:35] Intimacy is more than just · [8:18] Why people cheat [12:38] Share and Scribe Technique for dealing with resentment [29:09] Happiness is not a forever feeling [31:50] Getting a redo to break bad habits\ [35:00] Feeling unworthy in a relationships is the root of every single issue HOW TO CONNECT WITH OUR GUEST https://theintimacyexperts.org/ MEMORABLE QUOTES: "One of the biggest challenges in relationships and why it even gets to divorce in the first place is lack of communication. Lack of really sharing the truth on what's going on insides until it gets so bad, that the only option is to leave." "If you're thinking about cheating and haven't told your partner, now is the time to talk about it before you do something." "The idea is to open the idea of communication in a way that leads to deeper intimacy. Intimacy, as we define it … is to be simultaneously unguarded and receptive at the same time." "Intimacy is way more than just sex. And, when sex is off, it feels like 90% of the relationship. And that's why, if you're feeling uncomfortable in your physical body, it's really challenging to want to have sex." "Unless you're actively growing together, you're unintentionally growing apart." "Cheating is not a deal-breaker in a relationship. It is an opportunity to take a look at how the patterns came together between the two of you, activated in such a way that cheating was the outcome." "Cheating is never one partner is the issue problem, or the perpetrator of that experience. It had to happen because both partners are engaged in relationship in way that allowed that to move forward." "The idea of us being dishonest, all of us are dishonest. All of us are dishonest, even on a subtle level because words are never going to completely the exact experience of what you're experiencing inside." "If you haven't been using the resentment that is in your relationship as an opportunity to connect, here is a technique… The share and scribe is a technique that's meant to clear resentment before it starts, as it's building, after it's already there." "Reconciliation for something that happened in the past is definitely necessary for the person who experienced it to be able to move forward in truth." "Happiness is a human emotion that comes and goes just like every other emotion. It is an unsustainable, you can't sustain it forever. "Happiness is not the goal of a relationship. The relationship to be fully expressed, is really the goal, if you're going to have one in a relationship. Nobody has to shove it down." "If you don't feel worthy inside, you're going to receive that as if there's something is wrong with you. But if you feel worthy inside, you're going to be like understand, this is about them."
Food as Medicine for Healthy and Radiant Skin with Maria Marlowe
On this week's episode of the Girlfriend Doctor Show, I had a conversation with Maria Marlowe. Maria is an Acne Nutritionist, helping people of all different shapes and sizes achieve their acne-free skin they truly deserve. Maria approaches healthy skin through the use of healthy foods and healthy lifestyle habits. We discuss many topics in this interview but the main topics Maria emphasizes are paying attention to our body's signals, how inflammation can lead to leaky gut and gut dysbiosis, and what foods to eat that will help you diminish your acne. Once again, we are informed that the food we eat can be the main cause for our health problems. Many people talk about how refined sugars and carbs are the main causes for inflammation in the body and how it can be detrimental to our health. But not many show you exactly how to replace those foods with healthier, and sometimes tastier, options. For those who want to dive deeper on healthy foods for healthier skin, be sure to visit Maria's website, mariamarlowe.com! KEY TAKEAWAYS [4:51] Using food as medicine for clear and healthy skin [7:28] Make the connection between gut health and skin [13:42] Best foods to eat to combat inflammation [24:54] Digestive bitters for improving digestion system [26:31] Maria's famous beet brownie recipe HOW TO CONNECT WITH OUR GUEST https://mariamarlowe.com/ MEMORABLE QUOTES "It's really important to pay attention to your body and the signals your body is telling you in order to find or figure out the optimal diet for you in particular." "In acne in particular, and of course for hormone health, in general, we know that a high glycemic diet is not benefitting us and it's really important to maintain a low glycemic diet; I would say that's one of the most important things we can do for our skin." "The research is really showing that what's going on in our gut can manifest into our skin, and so people with acne or other inflammatory skin conditions tend to have gut dysbiosis." "The research now all points to, for the last twenty years, is pointing to inflammation as really the spark that lights your acne on fire, so to speak." "So that's why focusing on gut health, repairing the gut, repairing leaky gut, making sure you have a good balance of bacteria in there that's going to support reducing inflammation in the body, that's going to be key to clearing acne." "Definitely more plants. We want to consume more fiber; that's going to help keep our blood sugar stable. We want a variety of different fruits and vegetables, and depending on where you are with your digestion, you might want to tread really slowly." "Starting your day with an arugula salad is going to help your body better digest whatever comes after it."
Exploring Kenetik, the Ketone Drink that's Changing the Way We See Keto with Devon Price and Peter Bayne
On this week's episode of the Girlfriend Doctor Show, we had a conversation with the founders of Kenetik, Devon Price and Peter Bayne. On their journey of finding a sustainable diet and exercise regime, they tried the keto diet and found that ketones were the key to sustainable and healthy energy levels and mental clarity. But as we know, keto foods don't always taste the best so Devon and Peter decided to take matters into their own hands and produce this effective and tasty ketone drink! In this talk, we discuss the many benefits that come from ketones and how they can help with curbing the appetite, intermittent fasting, and how ketones can prevent and possibly reverse Alzheimer's and other serious neurological diseases and illnesses. Kenetik has now been tested by many groups of people and organizations and many have seen positive results in their daily routine, especially in their fitness regime. In this vast culture of consumerism, we consume things that are not healthy at all and actually cause harm to our bodies so a drink like Kenetik that is sugar-free, doesn't break fast, enhances our energy levels, as well as balances out our mood receptors, is a home run for me. I for one love the drink, and now, viewers of the Girlfriend Doctor can get 50% off their first purchase with the code, DRANNA50 at drinkkenetik.com! Tune in to find out more about this ketone drink that changes the way we see keto! KEY TAKEAWAYS (with timestamps): [9:05] The magic of ketones [12:56] The benefits of drinking Kenetik in the mornings and before and after a workout [19:21] How ketones can reverse and prevent Alzheimer's and other mental disabilities [32:18] What new innovations to expect from Kenetik [37:27] The effects of drinking sugary sports drinks WHERE TO FIND THE GUEST: https://drinkkenetik.com/ MEMORABLE QUOTES: "What a ketone is, is one of the questions you asked and it is when you run out of carbs and glucose in your system, you start converting and using the fat that you have stored up… that converts into a ketone called BHP." "Once that energy unit is produced, your brain absorbs it, your muscles use it, your heart uses it, it has all sorts of triggering mechanisms that help with cellular regeneration." "Drinking Kenetik before and after a workout not only helps to perform better, keeps your mind in the game, keeps your body going for longer, and also helps to recover between workouts." "As we were testing products, we're definitely reaching out to friends and family and one of the groups I reached out to do a bunch of testing was my mother and her group of friends, and all of them loved the product." "All of them talked about how much energy it gave them, and how it helped with intermittent fasting. They range in age from 55-68." "One of the things we have coming out is Kenetik concentrate, which is a concentrated version of our ready-to-drink product… it's easy to have in any existing drink you have or to pour into your favorite bubbly water flavor." "We found that body weights when you're having a ketone supplement, so some of the bigger guys like Devon and I need a bit more of a dose." "In sports drinks, there are endocrine disruptors in there so when I was introduced to your product, I said okay, this is the first one that I can really get behind, and then again, it tastes good… But thinking about those sports drinks, this can really substitute for athletes that are thinking about Gatorade." "A lot of pre-workout drinks are just loaded with caffeine too… a lot of it is a complete overdose of caffeine which is just terrible for you because it elevates your heart rate so much and just wears you out immediately."
Reversing Autoimmune Diseases Through Restorative Wellness with Margaret Floyd Barry
On this week's episode of The Girlfriend Doctor Show, we had a very special conversation with Dr. Margaret Floyd Barry. Margaret is a functional nutritionist, author, and co-owner of Restorative Wellness Solutions. But more than that, she is a master communicator, and she details how she got started on her journey in the world of functional nutrition. As someone who has studied hormonal health for quite some time, she shares her story of how she got introduced to the world of functional medicine through battling her own autoimmune disease when she was in her twenties and then again in her diagnosis during her 2nd pregnancy. Margaret emphasizes that diversity always rules, so there's not going to be a one-size-fits-all as far as cures for autoimmune diseases goes. Everybody's physiology is different and we truly need to find out what triggers are causing the most disruption in our microbiome. Margaret also details how one should start in the gut when starting their road to curing the thyroid and other hormonal disruptions. Margaret is truly a knowledgeable doctor and the jewels she drops in this episode are some you do not want to miss, so make sure to tune in! KEY TAKEAWAYS [8:25] How Margaret became involved in her journey with functional nutrition [21:11] Identifying the triggers for autoimmune disease [24:55] Digestive process is one of the most moments in our physiology [27:05] The difference between hypothyroid and hyperthyroid [32:00] Margaret got her own autoimmune diagnosis when she was pregnant with her second daughter HOW TO CONNECT WITH OUR GUEST https://restorativewellnesssolutions.com/ https://eatnakedkitchen.com/ IG: @restorativewellnesssolutions IG: @margaretfloydbarry MEMORABLE QUOTES "Diversity rules… from the stock portfolio, to you garden, to your gut, diversity rules. And this idea that one paradigm, one way of eating, can support diversity, it's just not possible." "I followed her advice, I took all the supplements (I didn't have a clue what any of it was doing), I changed my diet profoundly, and within three weeks, every spot of that eczema was gone and it has never come back." "Identifying what is constantly engaging that immune system and removing those things systematically. And ill tell you where you always want to start, and that's in the gut." "The vast majority of the immune system lives in and around the gut. Even if you're that rare person with no digestive symptoms, that doesn't mean that your digestion functioning perfectly." "If you think about it, our digestion tract, basically one big long tube, is still the outside of the body in many ways. I sort of describe ourselves as one very complicated donut, and the giant hole in the middle is our digestive tube." "With thyroid, thyroid regulates metabolism and many other things… a hypothyroid means an under-functioning thyroid; that means you do not have enough thyroid hormones to do the things it needs to do." "A hyperthyroid means it's up-regulated, so too much hormone… it can get life-threatening quickly because it can increase heart and blood pressure and things like that." "It was quite a moment because I specialized in Hashimoto's, worked with a lot of women who wanted to conceive… so this was my land and here I was pregnant, getting the diagnosis during a pregnancy, which is unusual because autoimmune sort of goes into remission during pregnancy."
Detoxing from Mold Toxicity, Stress, and Stressor with Misty Williams
On this episode of the Girlfriend Doctor Show, we had a conversation with entrepreneur extraordinaire, Misty Williams. Misty is a successful businesswoman/marketing strategist. After facing many physiological hardships like hypothyroidism and premature ovarian failure, she made it her duty to heal herself from these illnesses, with the main contributors being mold toxicity and stress. Mold toxicity definitely does not get the recognition it deserves. Misty dives deep into the dangers of mold toxicity and how it can lead to other illnesses or diseases and how accessing the parasympathetic tone of our nervous system can be the key factor in restoring and repairing our body. Misty talks about undergoing many meetings with doctors only for them to tell her she needed pills or surgery. She refused to go down that path so she decided to take a holistic approach to heal and has not looked back since. Now she works with many different medical specialists and is now even hosting a summit called the Radical Healing Masterclass Summit 2022! Tune in and check out the link attached to find out more! KEY TAKEAWAYS (with timestamps): [3:01] Radical Healing Masterclass Summit 2022 [6:53] Testing for mold toxicity [9:47] Misty's treatment regimen for mold toxicity [14:44] Women are more likely to be infected with mold toxicity [21:26] When people get out of the radical detox summit WHERE TO FIND THE GUEST: https://healingrosie.com/ https://spiritualgrowthevents.com/events/radical-healing-masterclass/ MEMORABLE QUOTES: "Everything that has happened to me comes back to stress and toxicity." "Just because it's a functional medicine doctor, does not mean that they know how to properly test for toxicity and then what to do about it." "I'm really getting the message from the universe that I have to work on my parasympathetic tone and really strengthen my parasympathetic nervous system." "The parasympathetic tone is your body being able to move out of that sympathetic fight-or-flight, go-go-go, ON… So we move out of that and we're able to spend time, even when we're awake, in the sympathetic, rest-repair-restore part of our nervous system." "As women, our bodies are more sensitive to our environments than our male counterparts. We are the perpetuators of the species." "If you're working with a practitioner and you are not seeing any improvement after 3-6 months time, like nothing is getting better, we've got to find other doctors." "Mold toxins with a biofilm really you need like excavation done at the same time as you're repaving the cellular systems." "I really wanted to give people the opportunity to hear a lot of different perspectives communicated by different types of communicators." From Saving Ecosystems to Saving Immune & Hormonal Systems with Reed Davis
On this week's episode of the Girlfriend Doctor Show, we had a delightful conversation with Reed Davis. After helping thousands of plants as an Environmental Paralegal, and then thousands of people as a Certified Nutritional Therapist and Health Coach, he observed what works and what doesn't when it comes to underlying health issues. He integrated his professions to become president of Functional Diagnostic Nutrition, where he specializes in rebuilding and maintaining the stability of the hormone, immune, digestion, and detoxification systems. In this episode, we also discuss the dangers of thyroids, as well as exterior factors that may exacerbate our brain and gut health, such as toxins in the air and artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. Almost every guest we have on here always seems to circle around a topic that we discuss quite frequently on The Girlfriend Doctor, and that is the idea that we are what we consume. We have to monitor our nutrition on a daily basis in order to reverse or prevent chronic disorders and illnesses, not only for ourselves but for our children as well. Tune in and find out exactly how Reed got his start in the world of functional nutrition and how people being healed, heals him! If you're under a lot of stress, what would the body want to do? It would kind of want to hibernate." "The thyroid is just getting signals like all your organs. They get signals through the blood and through hormones that travel through the blood." "What we definitely see are the self-improvements. By giving people the diet, the rest, the exercise, the stress reduction is so huge… Your cortisol and DHA get balanced and your sex hormones seem to smooth out a little bit." "When someone has thyroid dysfunction, on the hypo-thyroid side, it can be just an adaptive response to the levels of stress you're at." "We ran a couple of tests and found the boy was eating foods that were very irritating, neurostimulators and things like that." "Talking about the six main categories behind imbalances, so hormones, immune system, digestion, detoxification, energy production, and nervous system." "Healthy mind, healthy body, and nutrition… nutrients that we need. And that goes down to the gut, the microbiome." Healing Our Inner-Child to Reverse Autoimmune Diseases with Dr. Keesha
On this episode of the Girlfriend Doctor, I had a conversation with Dr. Keesha Ewers. Dr. Keesha is an Autoimmune Wellness & Integrative Medicine Medical Provider as well as a Doctor in Sexology. She specializes in digestive and hormonal health, and in this show, she gives us the key tips to reversing and preventing autoimmune diseases, maintaining sexual health, and more! Dr. Keesha details how unexpressed emotions as a child can linger in our bodies until they are fully purged out of our system. Specific events in our childhood can have a significant amount of trauma related emotion, which can lead to several illnesses and diseases like RA (rheumatoid arthritis), an autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, one which Dr. Keesha was able to heal from, fortunately. As adults, what we think is trauma is much different from what we thought it was as children. Most kids (Dr. Keesha being one of them) have no idea what trauma even looks like, let alone how deeply it affects our bodies later on in life. Taking the time to focalize on what causes specific triggers in our lives as adults is key to healing the trauma we endured as a child. Dr. Keesha makes it immensely evident that we have to be the parent/protector that we always needed to our younger, inner self. She's a gem in the world of integrative and hormonal health, so you won't want to miss this crucial talk! KEY TAKEAWAYS (with timestamps): [4:49] How Dr. Ewers came into her love for health [10:21] Going in-depth on the road to recovery work [17:17] Bonding between mother and newborn is crucial for baby's development [24:16] Journey in healing from sexual trauma [33:07] Learning how to perceive yourself in a different light [41:29] How sexual health plays into the internal healing process WHERE TO FIND THE GUEST: https://www.drkeesha.com/ MEMORABLE QUOTES: "Auto-immune disease is undigested anger… it's so interesting. Even the thought of digesting your emotions." "One day when I was meditating, I started asking this question, oh auto-immune means I'm attacking myself. When is the first time I wanted to die? Because I don't want to die today." "My RA was gone in six months and I never took any of the medications. So it's very powerful, this mind-body connection." "I didn't bond with my mom. So I grew up insecurely attached. And then had trauma on top of that trauma. So it's no wonder, auto-immune disease, right?" "What that button consists of is the next part of it which is the meaning you make up that goes with this event." "And this is why a lot of people will do energy work and they don't get completely healed because this hasn't been tracked yet. I call this tracking your hurt." "You have to track this hurt first, that's the first thing. And then, work on healing that wounding. And so, I start by getting a calm and safe place established in each person's nervous system." "You have to become the parent you wish you had at that moment for you, and you heal that attachment internally." "MenoPAUSE is that place where we get that beautiful opportunity to pause and really take a look at the inventory of our life experiences and really digest them." "Sexual expression is going to match the flavor of whatever your belief and behavior system you set up in your childhood." The Keys to Longevity and Spirituality with Teri Cochrane
On this episode of The Girlfriend Doctor, we had a conversation with the lovely Teri Cochrane. Teri is the CEO and Founder of the Global Sustainable Health Institute. But more than that, she is a international thought leader in longevity and some would even call her a "spiritual scientist", and if you tune in, you will find out why! Teri and I discussed many important topics regarding menopause like the dangers of endocrine disruptors like DES, to the emotional and generational traumas that are passed down from mother to fetus. But one topic of discussion that was different was how important it is to do the spiritual work for the inner-body. Our bodies are literally made up energy and when we take good care of our energy, it radiates. When we radiate, we are operating at a high vibrational frequency, and Teri puts a strong emphasis on this because many of us are not conscious enough of our energy. We need to constantly be conscious of what we are consuming, not just physically but mentally as well. Everything from the food we eat, to the water we drink, to the stuff we consume through our phones and computers, everything needs to have a meter! If one really wants to take a deeper dive into the world of inner-body work you should definitely check out Teri' website and book, The Wildatarian Diet, sold everywhere books are available! KEY TAKEAWAYS (with timestamps): [6:01] Teri's secrets to longevity and biohacking [10:14] R3 PROGRAM: Repattern, Restore, Reclaim [14:14] How endocrine disruptors affects mid-life transition [21:21] Operating at a high vibrational frequency is real health [23:55] Consequences of endocrine disruptors through the decades [31:13] Our inner-body is just as important as our outer-body WHERE TO FIND THE GUEST: https://tericochrane.com/ MEMORABLE QUOTES: "We're getting to the root of what are genetic tendencies that can be sharks or minnows." "When know that when a mother-to-be is under a state of emotional trauma, the mother will steal cortisol from the fetus." "We have massive shifts in puberty and we have massive shifts in menopause. And if our liver is not clear, we can't detoxify those hormones." "Words carry frequency and what we associate those words with will bring our frequency back to us and, literally, in real time, affect our genes, affect our cellular function." "What happened during that time after millions and millions of doses were given, and then 7-8 year-old girls were showing up with vaginal cancers… boys with undescended testies." "The big endocrine disruptors, and I want to emphasize this to every listener. It is in our food supply, it is in our cosmetics, it's in our water supply, it's in the baby's plastic toys…" "90% of the corn in the United States is genetically modified. 90% of the soy is genetically modified." "We know we have the ability to raise consciousness with thought alone. We know that meditation and prayer increases the immune system by 50% up to 5 hours. This is from the University of PA." "We all have the divine within us. Even with the reluctance, it shines through." "We're here to teach. We're here to empower. We're here to inform. And we're here to listen. You know, it has to be a two-way street. We learn from one another when we listen."
The Wonders of Hormone Reset Programs with Robin Nielsen
On this week's episode of The Girlfriend Doctor, we had a conversation with my very good friend/colleague of many years, Robin Nielsen. Robin is a hormone expert, Certified Clinical Nutritionist, and Board Certified in Holistic Health. Robin has been helping women with menopausal health for many years now and she gives us her secrets to maintain a healthy and thriving life! Robin discusses the importance on not only focusing on sex hormones because they're miniscule compared to the other main hormones, which are cortisol and insulin. She explains why that these are the main hormones women should focus on because they are the main factors that either contribute or deprive our gene expression. These factors essentially control the trajectory of our success. We also talk about her different programs made to help deal with the issues that come with menopause like weight gain, mood destabilization, and more. Robin emphasizes that ladies need to not only attend the hormone reset program but maintain it after it's done. Consistency is key when it comes to repairing our molecular integrity, and our lifestyle choices are the formula. This talk is too interesting to not tune in, so listen, learn, and grow! KEY TAKEAWAYS (with timestamps): [6:32] Hormone replacement therapy [12:52] Benefits of attending health retreats [21:03] Robin does not use supplements in her hormone program [21:43] What Robin's hormone reset program consists of [27:55] Where viewers can get a hold of Robin Robins Hormone Reset: https://naturalhormonesolution.com/hormonereset/?ap_id=annacabeca WHERE TO FIND THE GUEST: https://naturalhormonesolution.com/about/.com MEMORABLE QUOTES: "What I've noticed is that we're very focused on sex hormones… those are all minor hormones, and we're focused on those numbers… we're missing the boat." "You have to focus on the biggies, which are cortisol and insulin. That's where the lifestyle factors… it's all those factors outside of you that influence your gene expression." "Well here's the deal, there is something wrong if you don't feel well. And this is where I really encourage you to figure it out." "For decades I over-exercised and I under-ate, and guess what? I always gained the weight back because I didn't have a sustainable way to take care of myself." "She said this program has done more to fix what was wrong than any doctor I've been to in the last five years. "My kids have even noticed a difference in my overall mood. I'm much more upbeat and positive. And I think that's one of the best things of Robin's Hormone Reset, is really, you know, bringing families together again." "This Robin's Reset program is very foundational and that's the kind of change that can happen without any supplementation… some pretty powerful things can happen." "It's seven days, where actually everyday, we do a hormone assessment. There are six hormones that we go over. It's progesterone and testosterone. And then it's our thyroidal hormones. And then it's insulin and cortisol."
Fasting for the Mind, Body, and Soul with Dr. David Jockers
On this week's episode of the Girlfriend Doctor Podcast, I had a wonderful conversation with Dr. David Jockers. David is a natural health doctor, functional nutritionist, author, and certified strength and conditioning specialist. We dive into many topics regarding the benefits of intermittent fasting, strategies to adapt to eating less, knowing your "Why", and much more. I'm sure that you've probably heard or seen something regarding the benefits of fasting but in this conversation, we discuss the details on how to ease into a fasting routine without causing getting burnt out too quickly. Food is just as addicting, if not more, than any substance out there, so we should be more careful on what we are ingesting into our bodies and at what time. Dr. Jockers also details how he does a 24-hour fast once a week and how blood sugar and insulin levels impact sex drive and hormones. We are literally what we consume, and if we constantly eat foods that are not good for our body, we transmute that low energy into our daily lives. We go in depth on the importance of fasting but if you would like to really go deep-sea diving into the topic, make sure to purchase Dr. Jocker's book, The Fasting Transformation. And while you're at it, purchase his other books that will help you improve your physical, mental, and emotional body! More resilient mentally, emotionally, physically, we need to be healthier. I think as a society, we're weak. We're not very resilient." "We live in a world where, unfortunately, the media is trying to divide us… trying to make good guys and bad guys, so it's very easy to be prideful." "I think we have to remind ourselves that most people out there are trying to do the best they can." "You have to remind yourself of your goals. Why are you doing this, right? Having a big "why". If you have a "why" that makes you cry." "I just realized, wow. When I'm not eating in the morning and I kind of condense my eating window, and I was eating in a 4-6 hour eating window, and I was eating a lot of food in that window, I just felt a lot better. I had more energy, I was stronger in the gym. I just felt significantly better." "All of our ancestors fasted because, you know, they didn't have refrigerators and pantries. For certain seasons of the year, they were pretty much dependent on whatever they can find that day to eat." "Our body is better at adapting to fasting than overeating… better at adapting to food scarcity than to adapting to food abundance. It is built into our blueprint."
Innercising before Exercising with Keto Guru, Ben Azadi
On this episode of the Girlfriend Doctor Podcast, we had a delightful conversation with keto guru, Ben Azadi. Ben is a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner, author, and founder of Keto Kamp. He shares his journey coming from being a depressed, obese 24-year-old to being a very healthy and extremely successful entrepreneur. Our food is slowly losing its quality and we need to be aware of this issue. We can't just get our nutrients and vitamins from our food like we could've twenty years ago, so Ben has solutions for these problems: ketogenic diet. He shares his experience being a vegan and then switching to keto and talks about how he started his course, Keto Kamp, helping people of all ages and sizes achieve physical, mental, and spiritual health. Very often, people get too fixated on following all the exercises and diet protocols but fail to fixate on the things that feed the soul like hugging and talking to family and friends, going on an adventure, and learning how to live in gratitude. Ben emphasizes the importance of these innercises as well as finding a nutrition plan that works for you individually, because we all have molecular differences in our DNA, even if they're very slim. Tune in and join to learn the secrets of finding a balance that works for you when it comes to nutrition and inner healing. "When I declared responsibility, in instantaneously became the victor of my future and I stopped being the victim of my past." "I transition from a vegan/plant-based diet to a ketogenic diet and I started to explore different avenues for that." "When we think about the 50-70 trillion cells in this amazing human body, there's pretty much two energy sources: either the cells are burning glucose and sugar, or they're burning fatty acids and using ketones." "when you force adaption through dietary changes, good cells get stronger and bad cells don't adapt." "Being in a state of gratitude, which is Vitamin G; it's the greatest, most powerful vitamin you can take." "Dr. Joe Dispenza on hundreds of participants who have gone through his courses and seminars, and he has seen, on brain imaging scans, when somebody's experiencing gratitude, there's 1200 different chemical reactions that take place in the body, that puts the body in a restorative anti-inflammatory state." "I've seen so many people do their keto macros right, their intermittent fasting right, their exercise right, but they're not doing the inner work and the body doesn't heal." "When I'm in ketosis, I feel incredible. Especially if I'm fasted and in ketosis… I think it's one of the best bio-hacks for any entrepreneur, to utilize fasting and ketosis because it'll put you into a peak state that almost feels spiritual."
The Dangers of Toxic Mold in the Body with Bridgit Danner
In this week's episode of The Girlfriend Doctor Podcast, we had Bridgit Danner. Bridgit is a certified Functional Diagnostic Practitioner and author. This conversation covered topics such as gut bacteria, immune disorders, and birth defects, and how many of these issues derive from toxic mold levels in the body. Bridgit's interest in natural health grew from an interest in protecting the environment. She's very educated on the environment, so when an environmental illness was developed at her home in Portland, Oregon, and they lost everything in their home due to toxic mold, she knew she had to get to the bottom of this serious issue. Bridgit covered many ways one can prevent and treat toxic mold levels in the body in this episode but one can truly go in-depth on the subject in her new book, The Ultimate Toxic Mold Recovery Guide. "If people are listening and this is the first time hearing about it, it's not so uncommon, unfortunately. And since this is a women's health show, it's affecting women a lot more than it's given credit for." "Most of these tests are not available, you know, going to your pcp type of thing. You may be able to use your health savings card to pay for them, if you have a card that allows for that, but a lot of people are just paying out of pocket." "There's a great movie, I think it's called Blackwater, and I highly recommend that. It's in Delaware. It's about the runoff from the company making Teflon. And so, it was creating cancers, birth defects, miscarriages, and it's just a really well-done movie." "Just like functional medicine for the body, functional medicine for the home means you find the source." "And in the body, I love lymphatic movement. That probably made the most difference to me in healing. So, I love the sauna, dry rushing, Epsom salt baths, coffee enemas, lymphatic massage, rebounding, just getting outside and getting some exercise and getting some sun. Those things really move the needle for me."

Your Life Without Glasses: Healing Your Eyesight Naturally with Dr. Anna Cabeca and Claudia Muehlenweg
Wearing glasses may not be as uncool as they used to be, but they may actually be making your vision worse as you age. Dr. Anna and Claudia Muehlenweg discuss how to heal your eyesight naturally and why wearing eyeglasses creates bad habits that can lead to dry eyes, more stress, and worse vision over time. Learn some simple techniques that you can use right now to improve your eye health and start to reclaim your natural healthy vision. [2:20] Dr. Anna has been wearing eyeglasses since she was 13 years old. Recently, she started wearing bifocals and noticed how much they get in the way of reading a good book. Claudia is a leading expert on helping people restore their vision with natural methods. [5:20] Claudia has had vision problems since she was 3, which caused her a lot of social problems when she was a child. She was determined to get rid of her glasses and managed to do that during her 20's, but they made a comeback after her divorce. [7:20] Claudia has been practicing vision improvement her whole life and she's been teaching others how to do the same since 2009. The foundation of all natural eyesight improvement is the Bates method. [8:50] Vision improvement is based on relaxation. When you're relaxed, your system can operate optimally, but that's not true when you're stressed. In times of higher stress, your vision often gets worse. [10:20] The vision system takes until the age of 15 to develop fully. When a child is nearsighted, Claudia usually finds something in their life that stressed the child and made them feel unsafe. Not every person reacts to stress in the same way. For some, it can manifest as eczema or anxiety, but the body will usually show some kind of symptom. [14:00] The change in hormones during perimenopause can affect the shape and condition of the eyes, but that time of life can also be a time of major change that can be causing eye issues as well. [15:30] What is your vision for your life? How you view aging can impact your quality of life as you age. Be excited about your life and think about a vision for yourself in your healthiest and most energetic way. [16:35] Dry eyes can be solved with something as simple as blinking. When we look at screens, we tend to blink significantly less, and if you simply blink more, you will notice a considerable improvement. [17:50] You can also close and rest your eyes more often. Simply close and cover your eyes for 30 seconds, breathe deeply, and imagine it as a mini-vacation. [20:00] If you do feel eye strain, taking a minute to calm yourself can make a big difference. [21:30] Blue-blocking glasses are great for when you're in front of screens, but Claudia prefers software that changes the light output. It's preferable to get the blue light from the sun when you're supposed to get it. [23:50] Studies have shown that when we get up and spend five minutes each hour doing some sort of activity, it increases our productivity. That's a perfect time to incorporate resting your eyes. [24:45] Notice what makes your vision worse or better. If you need glasses to read, try reading at different times of the day or with more lighting. Moving your head and eyes together as you read and giving your attention to the words can help. It's also important to take frequent breaks and look around often. [28:00] Sunglasses were originally developed for extreme conditions but they eventually became more of a fashion statement. Wearing sunglasses can become an addiction just like smoking, and they interfere with the amount of natural light you need to function properly. [29:50] Our eyes need sunlight. The practice of sunning can help improve light sensitivity while exposing you to the sunlight you require. [33:20] Your eyes adapt and your brain can improve your blurry vision. Glasses do the work for you by allowing you to strain, avoid blinking, and have bad habits while still giving clarity. If you remove your glasses, your brain will adjust and you will be able to relax into more healthy eye habits. [35:40] The goal is to do things without glasses and allow your vision to readjust to a more natural way of seeing. The ideal is to not wear more correction than you need, and ideally, you wear whatever you need to do the task safely and be relaxed. [38:05] Just like diabetes, vision impairment can be reversed. The right therapies can improve your eye health and liberate you from glasses and contacts. [41:30] When you have your health, you have a thousand wishes. When you don't have your health, you have one wish. Most of us can't imagine our life without our vision. Intermittent Fasting, Perimenopause, and Wellness As We Age with Dr. Anna Cabeca and Cynthia Thurlow
Cynthia Thurlow tells the story of how a serious health scare, complete with ruptured appendix and complications, put her on the path to functional nutrition and helping people heal through food and healthy lifestyle changes. Learn about how intermittent fasting plays into perimenopause and your menstrual cycle, when it's appropriate, and how to avoid the most common mistakes people make when fasting. [2:00] Cynthia worked as an ER nurse for 16 years before working in critical care and cardiology. Having a child with life threatening food allergies put her down the path of thinking of food as medicine with a functional nutrition program. Lifestyle medicine has become Cynthia's main focus now after waking up in 2016 and feeling like she couldn't write another prescription that doesn't treat the root cause of the issue. [4:20] Cynthia started attracting other women who felt like their needs weren't being heard. She did a lot of work around nutrition and group programs. In an effort to stretch herself, Cynthia challenged herself to do a Ted Talk about her perimenopause experience, and later on, a second one about intermittent fasting. [6:20] A ruptured appendix turned into a huge number of complications. Manifestation played a big part in Cynthia's recovery. [8:15] There is a huge amount of confusion around menopause and perimenopause. In 2015, Cynthia's life was far more stressful than she realized and it created the perfect storm for perimenopause. She was doing all the wrong things and woke up one day exhausted, gaining weight, and facing down new food sensitivities. [10:50] When Cynthia went to her OBGYN, she was offered synthetic hormones, an IUD, and even a hysterectomy. She had to reroute everything in her life to focus on healing including prioritizing sleep, reducing her training, changing her diet, and reducing her work load. [12:05] Most of us don't have to worry about stress management in our 20's and 30's, and perimenopause is a barometer to let us know if we're balancing the parasympathetic and sympathetic autonomic nervous system. [13:05] We don't give prevention enough credit in maintaining health. [15:05] For both Cynthia and Dr. Anna, their experiences are what brought them to where they are now in life and they wouldn't be doing the meaningful work they do without them. [16:25] It's important to honor the rhythm of your menstrual cycle. The ideal time to fast is the time period right after menstruation and before ovulation. Additional stress during the five to seven days preceding the cycle can be particularly disruptive. [18:40] Progesterone is often prescribed during perimenopause, but it's important to take days off during the week. Prolonged progesterone supplementation increases insulin resistance. [22:45] Cynthia has had fantastic success treating type 2 diabetes and women who are insulin resistant with intermittent fasting but it has to be treated with caution. If you've suffered from anorexia, intermittent fasting may not be a safe option. Have a conversation with your doctor or psychologist to ensure you're at an appropriate stage in your recovery to begin fasting. [25:10] If you're not sleeping through the night, don't add intermittent fasting. Adding another stressor isn't going to help. Figure out why you aren't sleeping first and once that's been addressed intermittent fasting can be the missing piece of the puzzle for your health. [26:30] As we get older, we don't manage stress levels the same way we did when we were in our 20's. It's critically important that we take care of ourselves so that we can utilize a strategy like intermittent fasting to improve our health. You'll get the best results if you can moderate the lifestyle pieces first and then integrate it into your lifestyle. [28:05] Cynthia's book came out of her successful Ted Talk and it's essentially a blueprint for successful fasting, specifically for women. [29:25] There is a difference between clean and dirty fasting. Clean fasting is all about black coffee and bitter tea, and breaking your fast in the right way at the right time. Some of the common mistakes that people make is having BCAA or protein powder during a fast in the belief that the calories are low so it doesn't count. [31:30] When you're starting out, it's important to support your body's detoxing process. Replacing the electrolytes your body is losing during a fast is crucial to sticking with it. [34:15] Extended fasting can be beneficial, but it takes some effort to work up to. There are plenty of ways to look at fasting to make it sustainable and attainable. [35:20] A teaspoon of MCT oil is okay while fasting, but more than that can push you out of your fasting window. If you're just starting out and need a fatty coffee to get you through the early days of fasting, that's okay. Upgrade your Female Brain, Mood and Memory with Dr. Anna Cabeca and Dr. Louann Brizendine
Dr. Louann Brizendine talks about why menopause is not only a period of transition for women but also an opportunity for positive transformation and more happiness than you thought possible. Learn why the female brain becomes stronger and better in the midlife, how to adapt and thrive during that time of change, and why we need to incorporate more compassion, community, and connection in our lives as we age. [0:45] There is a physiology of mental health that is often ignored. There are changes to our brain that happen as we age and we need a comprehensive approach to healing. Biology and psychology have always both been fascinating for Dr. Anna, which is why she graduated with a double major in both fields. [4:30] To thrive you must honor your physiology. There is no mind/body dichotomy, they work together and rely on each other to make up you. [6:45] The Female Brain recently became a movie. It told the story of Dr. Brizendine, played by Whitney Cummings, and her book. [11:30] Being in psychiatry, Dr. Brizendine thinks of life in chunks. The Female Brain takes you to the beginning of the transition of your brain and the developmental stages from the ages between 40 and 90. [12:30] Declining progesterone and other hormones after the age of 30 affects our mood and thoughts through our physiology. Psychosis and mood changes can happen because of this transition. [13:50] Menopause is a rewiring of our brain that is as important as puberty. Hormones cause behavior. We think we are driving our own ship, but that's not entirely true. Right around the late 30s there are some shifts in our hormones which can cause all kinds of disruptions. [16:05] These hormone disruptions can cause all sorts of behavior changes where you feel calm and cool one moment and a raging inferno the next. It's important to honor and nurture yourself during those days of the cycle and realize that you can get a handle on it. [18:30] Even with women who have had their ovaries removed, they often experience a second stage of menopause. [20:20] If you've had a total hysterectomy, you technically don't need to take progesterone. A lot of women around the age of 50 in this situation start to feel fatigued and depressed, largely due to the adrenal glands. When we're younger, our ovaries produce 90% of the testosterone in our bodies, but that switches to our adrenal glands as we get older, and as we age, we don't produce as much of the hormones we need. [23:50] Men don't typically go through andropause until the age of 60. This can cause a mismatch between women who have a low sex drive and can be treated in ways that can help. [25:00] The Bush administration canceled the Women's Health division of the FDA that was looking into those effects. There is still a lot of sexism in the medical system. Doctors have the ability to prescribe medication for off-label use, and Dr. Anna often prescribes testosterone in this way. [26:45] When you give someone too much testosterone, it can create agitation and anger as well as novelty-seeking behavior. Physicians need to be careful when recommending or prescribing these hormone supplements. [28:30] Dr. Brizendine recalls the story of a patient who was prescribed testosterone and accidentally took 10 times the normal dose. [29:50] If the couple has a good sexual relationship, they can create a schedule and framework for sex and supplementation that makes it easier to experiment and adjust. A lack of sex drive is a long conversation. [35:10] Loneliness is more prevalent than ever. We don't generally live in a commune with our extended families anymore, and are more isolated. Oxytocin is a basic human hormone created from touch, the one thing that we have minimized for the past two years. [38:20] A lot of people have had a chance to get in touch with their spiritual life as an antidote to loneliness. First, you have to become aware that you're lonely, then you have to accept it. There are a number of symptoms that afflict people that you wouldn't necessarily associate with loneliness. [40:30] Once you're aware and have accepted, the action phase starts. Research has shown that women generally need at least four human contacts per week. Humans need contact. Without it we feel like we're dying and it can lead to all kinds of negative health problems. [43:20] The 50s and 60s are wonderful decades. Research shows that we generally get happier as we age as we let go of the nonsense expectations we have and do things that are more meaningful to us. There is a lot to look forward to as you get older including more compassion, community, and connection. [47:50] Dr. Anna asks a series of rapid fire questions about Dr. Brizendine's favorite foods, supplements, and exercises. How to Take Care of Your Skin and Turn Back the Clock with Dr. Anna Cabeca and Dr. Anthony Youn
Dr. Anthony Youn is a plastic surgeon, bestselling author, and transformation expert who has become a social media sensation building an audience of millions of followers across YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. He joins the show to discuss how to take care of your skin and what you can do to turn back the clock. [7:20] Dr. Youn re-invented himself during the pandemic as he found himself having to close his office and not having patients to take care of. He started creating entertaining and educational videos on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok. [8:21] Dr. Youn likes the fact that he can treat 20 people in his office in a day, but that he can also help 500,000 people on social media. [11:03] When it comes to the fight against aging, Dr. Youn recommends eating real food, using clean skincare, and looking at actual plastic surgery only as a last resort. As far as best diets for the skin, there isn't a particular one Dr. Youn recommends following – it's about consuming what's best for your body in general. [11:31] There are a few things Dr. Youn suggests everyone does to take good care of their skin and to help turn back the clock: using Retinol or a good anti-aging cream at night, using an anti-austerity serum every morning, and using a sunscreen of at least SPF 30. [13:32] Dr. Youn and his team conducted a test that consisted of them applying simple skin care cream two minutes in the morning and two minutes at night for two months. They found that the participants of this experiment looked about five years younger. [13:54] Here's what you could do in the morning to be ahead compared to 90% of people: cleanse your skin in the morning, apply an antioxidant serum – like a vitamin C serum after that, and apply sunscreen last. A toner or a moisturizer aren't necessarily needed. [14:16] At night, it's important to cleanse your skin to get rid of the day's worth of grime, oil, makeup, and pollution. After that, you want to apply Retinol or another anti-aging cream. [14:47] Remember: moisturizers aren't truly anti-aging, they're just for comforting and hydrating your skin. [15:50] When it comes to seeking and undergoing plastic surgery, it's important to keep in mind that you have options. If you're looking at little downtime and not as much cost, for instance, there's IPL (Intense-Pulse Light). It's a great way to get rid of spots caused by the sun. Looking for an overall anti-aging treatment? Then, Microneedling is worth looking into. As Dr. Youn puts it 'You don't have to undergo surgery with an expensive laser with a 10-14 day downtime to look and feel younger – you have so many options these days.' [18:09] When it comes to the online and medical spaces, there are a couple of things that have left Dr. Youn appalled. The first one concerns people who perform surgical procedures in hotel rooms or other locations, and they do so even if they aren't doctors. Thankfully, these fake doctors, who have also caused some people to die, are being arrested and put in prison. The second phenomenon discussed by Dr. Youn are some doctors who have the tendency to add surgery after surgery, and have operations lasting eight, ten or even more hours. This is a situation that is starting to become dangerous. [19:40] In his approach, Dr. Youn has limited any operation to about five hours because, as he says, safety has to be the top priority. [20:31] There are different categories of anti-aging ingredients that are most commonly used when it comes to skin care. There are retinoids – derivatives of vitamin A – for example, and there are growth-factor based creams or peptides. [22:55] One thing that's important for you to remember is to try to identify and avoid triggers. For some people this could be heat, for others alcohol, or coffee. Everybody is different. [23:59] People can get overgrowth of bad bacteria on your skin, just like they would get it in their gut. [27:19] As far as antibiotics are concerned, Dr. Youn acknowledges that there's a challenge plastic surgeons face when it comes to their risk-benefit ratio of their operations. In some cases, antibiotics are overprescribed. But it's important to be aware of the fact that antibiotics aren't found only in the medical space. Research in the food service industry, for instance, has found that there can be antibiotics as high as 70% in food given to animals. [29:45] Some facts about Dr. Youn: fat injections, fat and back grafting are among his favorite surgical procedures. He enjoys smoothie bowls, a glass of wine here and there, and a beer once every few months. He plays tennis and is a huge fan of yoga. In his downtime, he enjoys doing creative work like writing and brainstorming video ideas. As for sex, he considers himself a traditionalist, picking missionary as his favorite sexual position. The Role of Minerals in Fatigue, Hormones, and Optimal Health with Dr. Anna Cabeca and Barton Scott
Instead of guessing, you need to test when it comes to your health. Barton Scott is on the podcast to talk about his struggle with brain fog and low energy, despite being a high level athlete in his youth and how he discovered the connection between minerals and optimal health. Find out how to improve your thyroid function, why magnesium and iodine are crucial to your hormone health, and how to get more of them into your body ASAP. [1:40] Barton started his journey because of his own experience. When he was younger, Barton was a high-level athlete and student and always pushing his body. His mother had ill health for a long time, and he could tell that she was losing her vitality as time went on. [3:35] Barton spent a lot of money on testing for him and his family, and he noticed that nothing they seemed to be doing affected the test results. He started looking at what areas of his life he could change. [4:20] As a high-level wrestler, Barton had been supplementing since the age of 12. Eventually, he realized that his lifestyle was preventing him from really benefiting from the supplements he was taking. [5:15] If we don't absorb, it doesn't matter. If you're not testing, you're guessing. As a chemical engineer, Barton was uniquely positioned to solve the issue. [6:50] Mineral supplements go a long way towards replenishing the body and have a major impact on how you show up in life. It affects your energy levels, your ability to sleep well and to focus. We need minerals to activate the building blocks of life. [8:20] We are all missing something, and that something changes over time. That's why testing is so important. [9:10] Barton has done a few extended fasts in order to accelerate the healing process of a hamstring injury. Knowing his mineral levels at the time was crucial. It can be hard to do a water fast when other people in your life aren't participating and it really makes you aware of your relationship with food. [13:30] Minerals activate all the enzyme pathways in the body. The only other way to do that is with heavy metals, but we need to take steps to protect ourselves from the accumulation of heavy metals. The safest way to detox your body from heavy metals is using minerals to fill those gaps. [15:55] Heavy metal toxicity is very common in people. Lack of appropriate minerals is a pandemic on its own. [16:40] The source of your minerals doesn't particularly matter. Your body is smart enough to be able to make use of them, whether they come from food or supplementation. [17:10] Iodine is important for a number of bodily functions. Dr. Peter McCullough recently talked to Joe Rogan about using Iodine as a nasal rinse as protection against Covid. Iodine is a vital mineral and we take in such a small amount on average that it's surprising we don't all have hypothyroidism. [19:35] Healthy populations in Japan eat 80-100 times the amount of Iodine that the typical North American eats in a day. Iodine is critical for the thyroid to be able to support your hormones as one of the foundational building blocks. [22:50] Barton's iodine formula is unique because of its ability to be absorbed into the bloodstream without having to go through the digestive system. Gut issues are incredibly common and are the main reason people aren't absorbing the minerals they need. [25:25] There are many ways to ingest the supplement and many people report that they become more vascular. It helps with cold sensitivity, which correlates to more mental energy and clarity. [26:00] It took the better part of a year for Barton to fix his iodine deficiency. For a normal healthy person, we are not consuming anywhere near enough iodine each day. If you have chlorine or fluoride in your water, they are also interfering with your ability to take in enough iodine. [28:10] Hair analysis is an important piece of information when it comes to iodine and mineral absorption. It's an easy non-invasive test that can reveal a lot about someone's condition. [33:15] If you do hair analysis quarterly, you will have a map that will serve you very well on informing you on what your body needs and what you need to adjust. [34:45] Similar to the iodine, Barton's magnesium doesn't need to be digested to be absorbed. It goes straight into the bloodstream and enables your body to produce melatonin and serotonin. [36:05] People that have had cramps have reported relief very quickly after beginning magnesium supplementation. When you're stressed, your body is leaning hard on magnesium. Cramps are a sign that your body is missing something. [38:20] Magnesium is good for collagen production and hormone production and alongside iodine, is one of the most important minerals for your health. It's almost impossible to have too high a level of magnesium. [40:40] When you get magnesium as part of your testing, ask for a red blood cell measurement. It's processed differently and more useful for what you want to know. The ideal level of red blood cell magnesium is
Love, Passion, and Oxytocin Moments with Dr. Anna Cabeca
February is the month of love, so it's time to take the opportunity and show yourself some love too! Find out how to not only live longer but improve the quality of your life, by choosing to have more oxytocin moments and by embracing and recognizing the ones you love and who love you back. [0:20] It's not just about the number of years in our lives, but our healthspan as well. We are destined for a long life and our quality of life is in our control. [0:40] Oxytocin is one of the leading factors to longevity in our lives. The love we feel in our lives is correlated to the most powerful rejuvenating hormone in our lives. Stress and cortisol is the opposite. When we don't get a break from the stresses in our life we shorten our lives unnecessarily. [2:45] February is filled with messages of love, but if we're not feeling love in our life, it can become a stressor. High stress and low oxytocin is the physiology of divorce. [4:10] Dr. Anna received an email from a listener that realized the link between pain during intercourse and being receptive to love and affection. Between using some DIY lube and Julva, she was feeling rejuvenated and found herself initiating sex for the first time in a decade. [6:10] There are over 200 different chemicals found in umbilical cord blood and many of those contribute to lifestyle diseases. [7:10] The clitoris to anus is the most important real estate of the body. Clitoral atrophy can happen, just like your muscles, if you don't take care of it. [7:50] The Davinci 50 Conference is a diverse group of physicians, healthcare entrepreneurs and business people learning from the world's leaders in cutting edge rejuvenation science. [9:20] There is magic in the times we pause and reflect. That is when we connect with ourselves and our loved ones. The oxytocin moments we experience determine the quality of our life. The more we can choose to see them, the healthier and younger we are. [11:10] The most important love organ is the heart. Identify the people and things that you love and can rekindle or reconnect with them. When it comes to children, it's important to model what self-love looks like. [12:45] Taking care of your heart is something that Dr. Anna has been aware of since being a teenager when her mother went through heart surgery at the age of 52. [14:05] The hormone connection to diabetes and women in menopause isn't shared enough. [15:00] February should be the month of love, passion, and oxytocin moments. Be aware of the people you love and show them that you value and care for them. Overcoming The Leptin Plateau with Dr. Anna Cabeca and Dr. Bindiya Gandhi
Dr. Bindiya breaks down the impact of the hormone leptin and why so many people struggle with a weight loss plateau that they can't breakthrough. Learn how dieting for too long can actually prevent you from losing weight, why the counterintuitive solution may be to eat more, why leptin might be the reason you're always craving food and stressed out all the time, and what you can do to reset your metabolism. [0:20] Leptin is a largely unknown hormone but one of which everyone should be aware. Leptin is responsible for telling your brain that you have enough fat stored to fuel your body for calories at a normal rate. When leptin levels are high, that's when you're prone to food cravings, gaining weight, anxiety, and more. [3:00] We have been told for years that we should be snacking between meals, but when we do that it increases our insulin and blood sugar levels without much benefit. You should typically eat every 4 to 6 hours, and if your leptin resistance is off you need to reset your metabolism. [5:20] Leptin doesn't impact everyone the same. It's important to identify what is optimal for you and how your leptin levels are affecting your health goals. [6:45] Everybody eventually hits a weight loss plateau. Constant diets with rapid weight loss or weight gain mess up your metabolism. When you start restricting your calories your body can go into starvation mode and this can result in a pause in weight loss, even if you're eating the same foods as before. [9:45] The majority of Dr. Bindiya's patients have hit this weight loss plateau at some point, and when that happens they usually also experience constant fatigue and low energy. Tracking leptin levels is the first step to resetting their metabolism. [11:30] One of the first things Dr. Bindiya recommends is for her patients to eat more to shock their bodies out of starvation mode. [12:45] If you are leptin resistant, you have probably been in a starvation state for a long time and your thyroid may be suffering, but this can often be missed in clinical tests. [15:30] As we get older, leptin resistance becomes more of an issue. We have to optimize our lifestyle to help with the genetics with which we are born. [19:05] Intermittent fasting is a powerful weight loss strategy, but it can go too far and trigger the body's starvation response. It's counterintuitive, but we need to eat enough during the eating window to reset our metabolism. [22:30] Dr. Bindiya works with patients by identifying what is happening with their bodies when they hit a plateau. She looks at their hormones, stress levels, and diet history. If they've been doing intermittent fasting for a while, the answer may be to ease up a bit, especially if they are stressed more than usual. [26:15] When snacking, people tend to eat more sugar, carbs, and fruit. We want to reduce our fruit consumption because it negatively impacts leptin and congests the liver. Simply eliminating fruit can have a big impact. [27:10] Stress management is an important aspect of treatment. If you're not getting quality sleep, figuring that part out is crucial. If you've been exercising too often or too intensely, you may have to switch it up and take it a bit easier. [29:30] In order to overcome a plateau faster, supplements can be very helpful. Probiotics are important for establishing gut health, as well as supplements that support your liver and blood sugar. [33:15] Practicing daily gratitude is an important habit for Dr. Bindiya that has transformed her life. She starts every day with reflecting on something for which she is grateful. MenuPause: Feel Incredible at Any Stage of Life with Dr. Anna Cabeca
Dr. Anna talks about her upcoming book MenuPause and how you can use the six-day menu plans to overhaul your hormonal balance and allow your body to detoxify and heal. Learn about the different phases of detoxification, the #1 most beneficial thing for your body no matter how old you are, and why your health always comes down to two specific factors. [0:30] Dr. Anna talks about her past book releases, and what her latest book is about. MenuPause is a collection of six-day menu plans that pause out something from your diet because something as simple as a six-day pause can make a huge change in your life. [4:35] You can reclaim the health of your life through food. Menopause can be one of the most challenging stages of your life and what you eat has a direct impact on your ability to handle and manage that time. [6:20] Detoxification symptoms can sneak in when you are pausing out certain foods. As we detox, emotions are released as well. Many different religions from around the world say similar things about how your organs hold certain emotions. As we take in nutrients and help our bodies release toxins, we consistently see a release of toxic emotions as well. [8:40] You need to empty the trash and sometimes that means having another person to hold the trash can for you so you can talk. [9:25] Phase 1 detoxification is mobilizing the toxin into a water soluble molecule and phase 2 is flushing them out. Your liver needs to function well and have the proper nutrients in order to detoxify. [10:20] Hormones are energetic molecules. We are energetic beings. Thoughts are energy. The Keto Green way is more than just a diet, it's a way of looking at life. [14:30] We go farther as a community. We need to reach out more. The most healing hormone in your body is oxytocin, also known as the feel-goodd hormone. The most beneficial thing for your body is to feel good, and that includes orgasm. [16:00] Your body is designed for pleasure, for exercise, to be nourished and cared for. Your body is the cathedral of your spirit. Be good to yourself and be good to others. [18:00] Dr. Anna details the different six-day plans found in MenuPause and which one may be right for you. [22:50] In Japan, women view menopause as their second spring and a time of renewal. Since they tend to follow a more plant-based diet their experience of menopause is very different than women in the West. [24:50] Join the Keto Green challenge group to start your transformation. Dr. Anna has seen incredible improvements in people where they have lost extra weight or got off certain medications because of changing their diet. [26:30] Dr. Anna lost her mother at a young age from health problems and complications in surgery. Life and death have taught her two things, health always comes down to inflammation and hormonal imbalance/adrenal dysfunction. The life cycles of women around the world hint at what works and what doesn't when it comes to diet and lifestyle. [28:50] Dr. Anna's father experienced health problems as well and at the age of 79 his symptoms were pretty much dismissed by his cardiologist as simply old age. Dr. Anna took on her father's treatment and in 30 days he went from almost bedridden to playing tennis with his grandchildren. It doesn't matter how old you are, you can always turn around Type 2 Diabetes but it starts with you taking control of your health. 2022: Inviting More Miracles Into Your Life This Year with Dr. Anna Cabeca and Marci Schimoff
We can't create miracles, but we can create the conditions to invite them into our lives this year. The biggest thing that each of us can do to create a better world is for each of us to live a better, happier life. Marci Schimoff talks about her Year of Miracles program and how you can learn to become open to receiving more miracles in your life, how to focus your energy and attention on love and gratitude, and why the path to peace is finding happiness that doesn't depend on your circumstances. [0:30] 2021 was a year of challenge and growth for many people, Marci included. Pivoting into her opportunities has been a real blessing. [2:20] The past year has also introduced a lot of additional stress into people's lives. Having a supportive community around you can be crucial to growth and wellbeing, and can help you avoid becoming depressed and isolated. [5:10] We can't do everything alone. We are social creatures and we get energy from connection with other people. Marci helps organize groups of women to connect with each other which has created miraculous changes in their lives. [7:30] A miracle is a surprise and welcomed event that can't be explained by science and often attributed to divine grace. We can't create miracles, but we can create the conditions for miracles to show up in our lives. [9:00] The first step to formulate for miracles is to remove the blocks that we have that prevent miracles from flowing into our lives. Miracles are everywhere, we just aren't necessarily open to them. One of the biggest blocks is not feeling worthy of them. We unconsciously block good from coming our way because we feel unworthy of it. [10:15] Somebody can only give you something to the degree you are open to receiving it. The same is true with the universe. [10:30] Ask yourself the following five questions to assess how well you receive in your life: Do you do a good job taking in compliments? Do you receive gifts easily? Are you able to ask people for help? Do you share in your wins and successes, or do you downplay everything? Do you feel okay receiving if it comes easily, or does it feel like cheating if you don't struggle or work hard? [15:05] Notice the ways you are unconsciously pushing away the good in your life. The more you can practice this, the more open to receiving you will become and more miracles will show up in your life. Focus on the energy of love and gratitude instead of brushing it off. [17:00] What we put our attention on grows, so choose where you put your energy and attention and focus on what makes you feel good. The better you feel, the more you will attract like energy. [17:50] Most people set New Year's resolutions, but only 8% of people realize their intentions by the end of the year. The difference is in setting soul-based intentions rather than ego-based intentions. When you set a resolution, notice whether you feel expanded or contracted. [21:30] Marci tells the stories of a few of the people that have gone through the Year of Miracles program. [23:45] Marci has everyone set an overarching theme for the year. This year Marci's theme is to trust in the flow and the universe. People who are happiest believe that the universe is on their side and fundamentally benevolent. Look for ways to find joy in the moment, even when things are tough. [26:45] We are all works in progress and it comes down to habits. If you can look at negative things and see what could be better instead of how bad things are, you are on the right path. [27:50] The five foundations of the Year of Miracles program spell USHER: Universe, Soul, Heart, Energy, Responsibility. Boosting Your Metabolic Health at Age 50 and Beyond with Dr. Anna Cabeca and JJ Virgin
JJ Virgin shares the key lifestyle changes that you need to make to boost your metabolism and live your best life at age 50 and beyond. Learn about the seven foods you should drop immediately from your diet, how to cross train your diet in the same way you would cross train your exercise, and the key health parameters you should be paying attention to every week to know if you're moving in the right direction. [1:45] One of the things you have to prioritize as you age is self-care and putting yourself first. Sacrificing your sleep may no longer be a worthy option. You can be in your best shape at 50, but you need to focus on what you need to be healthy. [3:30] A healthy body burns fat and holds onto muscle. If you're carrying around extra weight, it may be an indicator that you have a metabolic condition. Weight loss is a side benefit of your metabolism working well. [4:20] You need to step on the scale everyday if you want to understand how your body is functioning. The key is to position yourself as the observer instead of the judge. People who weigh in every day keep the weight off and it helps you connect the dots between what you're eating and how it's working for you. [7:00] There are seven foods that are commonly found in most people's diets that once removed often result in immediate weight loss. We're very aware of food sensitivities like shellfish and peanuts, but rarely pay attention to things like sugar and gluten. [8:50] You need to eliminate sugar and sweeteners from your diet. Sugar is doing a lot of disruption to your gut and making it more inflammatory overall. [9:45] There is a right way to do keto and a wrong way to do keto. Paying attention to your alkalinity and constant measuring is important to keeping a diet on track. [11:45] JJ is anti-diet. Dieting should be used therapeutically in the short-term, so you can learn what works for you and bring that into your daily routine. Cross train your diet like you would use your exercise. [12:40] 76% of us are overweight or obese right now, and only 12% of the population would be considered metabolically healthy. [13:40] For someone metabolically healthy, intuitive eating can work well to help you understand what food is working for you. Since most people aren't in that category, intuitive eating is pointing them in the wrong direction. [14:30] Avoid eating before sleep and avoid eating for at least an hour after waking up. Get up and get active as quickly as possible. [15:30] Any kind of toxin can get in the way of you losing weight. Mold toxicity is extremely prevalent and can cause major issues metabolically speaking. [17:15] The first meal in the morning where most people mess up. So many of the breakfast choices are simply sugar. When you break your fast it should be with clean protein, healthy fats and fiber. [19:00] A continuous glucose monitor can be a powerful tool in helping you understand the effects of food on your body. [21:25] Eating disorders are very common in the diabetic population. The trajectory of the US population is not going in a great direction. Right now, we are on track for 100% of the population to be diabetic by the year 2030. [23:15] You need to love yourself right where you are, and then dare yourself to want more. You just need a path to heal your metabolism and that's not going to happen if we don't have these conversations. [24:20] Dr. Anna goes over the baselines for metabolic health for both men and women. In addition to waist-to-hip ratio and triglycerides, we should also be paying attention to Vitamin D, blood pressure, and triglyceride to HDL ratio. If one of these factors are off, it becomes the precursor to several other factors going off the rails, and it can point you toward what you need to fix. [28:45] If your diet is dialed in but your fasting blood sugar and hemoglobin H1C is elevated, you may need to look at the stress in your life. It's important to track these numbers because they point to where in your lifestyle you need to make some shifts so that it doesn't get worse. [29:15] Focus on one change at a time, otherwise you won't stick with anything. JJ recommends starting with food and identifying your hidden food intolerances. Once you know which foods work for and which ones don't, you begin lowering your sugar impact, and that prepares you to enter ketogenic cycles without the usual pain involved with jumping into something new. [33:55] A caloric restricted diet doesn't work long-term, but cross training and cycling through diets short-term can be very effective. It's a lifestyle approach. Uric Acid Exposed: The Key to Losing Weight, Controlling Blood Sugar, and Achieving Extraordinary Health with Dr. Anna Cabeca and David Perlmutter MD
David Perlmutter MD reveals the exciting and challenging science behind a major health risk that almost no one is talking about. Find out how uric acid is contributing to some of the biggest health risks in modern life, how the standard American diet is the perfect formula for creating dangerous levels of uric acid in your body, and how you can make changes to your diet that will help you lose weight, control your blood sugar, and live a healthier life. [1:40] As of 2022, David will be 67 years young and he's planning on traveling from Vancouver to Alaska with his wife. The world has a lot of variability and uncertainty right now so it's hard to make detailed plans for the following year, but in some ways, that's good because it forces you to focus on the present. [5:00] David's new book is called Drop Acid. It specifically deals with uric acid and how we discovered it to be a central player in regulating metabolic health. It's not only that uric acid just becomes elevated, it actually plays a causal role in conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. [7:45] Metabolic issues are the number one cause of mortality on the planet. Countries like Japan have been aggressive in intervening with people with high levels of uric acid because of its dramatic associations with death from all causes. [8:25] Risk of death due to cardiovascular disease rises by 38%, stroke by 35%, and for every point of elevation in uric acid above 7 all cause mortality increases by 8%-13%. Having a high uric acid level is associated with a 80% risk of dementia, and a 55% risk of Alzheimer's. [10:00] Testing uric acid levels is fairly routine, but what it indicated wasn't meaningfully understood until recently. David began looking at uric acid because of his interest in metabolic health and its association to Alzheimer's. The original paper linking uric acid to metabolic issues was published in 1894, and was buried until a researcher named Dr. Richard Johnson started doing studies on it. [12:15] David was listening to a podcast episode with Dr. Peter Attia doing an interview with Dr. Johnson and he was overwhelmed by the information. Every minute was a new pearl of information. David started communicating with Dr. Johnson, which became the basis of a new friendship. [14:30] The genetic mutations that cause humans to have higher uric acid than other mammals happened around 14 to 17 million years ago as an evolutionary survival mechanism. In times of food and water scarcity, uric acid allowed us to increase our blood sugar and retain water which were powerful advantages. [15:45] To this day, we have a component of our genes that want to be thrifty and pack away fat for the next period of food scarcity. Historically, the biggest threats to our survival was in finding food sources and being eaten by predators, and uric acid helped with both of those. [16:55] Certain cultures have evolved this gene and are more at risk of negative effects from it in our modern world. Fructose is the key ingredient to uric acid production in the body and the world is awash with it. The highest rates of obesity are in those genetic populations. [18:50] 50% of American adults will be obese by 2030, including children. 10% of kids between 12 and 18 are hypertensive. This is a direct manifestation of the foods we are eating, primarily fructose. Fructose is metabolized into uric acid and uric acid is doing the dirty work. [20:10] In the context of 99.9% of human habitation on this planet, this adaptation was very advantageous. It wasn't until recently, when our diets have changed so significantly, that it has become a liability. [21:15] Clearing uric acid is where the challenge is. We have lost the function to clear uric acid and with most foods we eat increasing uric acid levels, it can be difficult to keep levels low on the standard American diet. Fructose is the main culprit and average daily consumption increased by 1000% between 1970 and 1990. {24:30] Not all alcohol is associated with high levels of uric acid, but beer is one of the worst contributors. Targeting a specific enzyme called xanthine oxidase can help the body excrete uric acid. [27:20] In menopause, uric acid increases because estrogen plays a major role in the kidney's ability to excrete uric acid. Women who are on estrogen replacement therapy seem to have some protection from their uric acid rising. [28:30] One of the most important discoveries has to do with a master pathway known as AMPK. This pathway is turned on by things like exercise, berberine, and metformin, and when activated, it prevents the body's production of extra glucose and sugar. [31:45] The opposite of AMPK is triggered by two ways: fructose entering the body and uric acid in general. Uric acid is the key to the ability to hibernate, but if you don't plan on spending the four to six months sleeping, you should try to keep uric acid low to maintain your metabolic health. [33:55] For people who are working hard to lose we
The Estrogen = Cancer Myth with Dr. Anna Cabeca and Dr. Shawn Tassone
Menopause and perimenopause shouldn't be something you just power through, yet that's the way that many women deal with their hormone or energy issues. There's a better way, and it doesn't involve being afraid of estrogen and hormone therapy. Dr. Shawn Tassone answers your questions on cancer, estrogen, hormones, and health, and talks about why the narrative matters in getting to the root cause of a patient's problems. [3:05] Being a man in the arena of women's health gives him a different perspective. As the author of The Hormone Balance Bible, Shawn helps women transform their body and life during perimenopause and menopause. [4:10] Shawn found that if he could share stories of hormonal archetypes with his patients, it connects much better than just raw data. It gives women a starting point to get the information they are looking for and points them in the right direction to learn more. [5:50] Hormone issues can feel very isolating, like you're not being acknowledged. Hearing the stories of other people and how it affected them is affirming. [6:20] If 10,000 men's penises fell off tomorrow, there would be a national outrage and inquiry. But when hundreds of thousands of women are complaining of endometriosis, pelvic pain, or fibroids, they are told that it's just what happens when they get older. [8:10] The more women physicians that experience the menopausal period of life the more natural options and reception that women will get in our culture. [8:45] Speak up and share what's on your mind. There is always one next right step and the answer is never "come back next year and I'll check again." In the case of perimenopause and menopause, there is always a next right step for being healthier next year than you are now. [10:50] Half of Shawn's patients bring labs from other physicians that say everything is normal. You can't just look at the numbers. You have to look at the person and how they personally feel. The narrative part of your patient's history matters. [12:10] Shawn tells the story of a mother run ragged trying to maintain and support her family and how the narrative of the saboteur helped her understand her situation. Women have a tendency to power through painful sex or exhaustion or stress. [15:40] Shawn's mother passed away from ovarian cancer and that started his own journey to learn how hormones influenced the situation. Oncologist's jobs are to help you live longer. They aren't particularly interested in quality of life. [19:10] When it comes to cancer, it's always important to try to identify the root cause whether it was a hormone disruptor or toxic exposure. With every single patient that Dr. Anna has seen with cancer, the issue was never their own natural production of hormones. [21:10] There are a number of factors when it comes to cancer. Shawn will typically do a genetic test to identify their individual risk as well as their genetic risk. [23:50] There is a clean way to do keto and a dirty way to do keto. The keto green diet has shown to have improvements on multiple health markers as quickly as two weeks in. [24:40] For women in menopause who've had cancer and have restrictions around estrogen, the treatment is piecemeal. If the issue is vaginal dryness, the recommendation is Julva. If it's overall health, Shawn points them to a macha product or fish oils and magnesium. [28:10] It's important for healthcare providers to communicate with each other. Dr. Anna had a patient that had been treated for breast cancer and had a Vitamin D hydroxy level of 11, where the optimal number is closer to 80. This was a major failure on the part of her healthcare team since Vitamin D is a key hormone player. [31:15] Estrogen is crucial in slowing bone loss while also maintaining brain, cardiovascular, and skin health. If your quality of life is impacted negatively because you're afraid of hormones, you're putting the cart in front of the horse. [33:05] There is a study that is ongoing that looks at the effect of hormones like estrogen on rates of cancer and it looks like there is no increased risk of breast cancer. The media has demonized estrogen to the detriment of both women and men. [34:10] Vitamin D doesn't make you feel any different, but it is helpful for the long term. The silent factors like Vitamin D levels are often the most overlooked. The cancer we get from a lack of sun exposure is much worse than anything you can get from too much sun exposure. [35:30] Hormone imbalances can make you into an entirely different person. Fixing your hormones can have near immediate results where you feel considerably better over the course of a week. Add in vitamins and supplements which work over a long period of time and you have a solid protocol. [37:45] At one point, progesterone was only prescribed to protect against uterine cancer. Shawn likes and prescribes progesterone for a variety of reasons, whether or not the patient has a uterus. Mentioned in this Episode: 512-956-0296 @shawntassonemd tass
The Holiday Gift Guide with Dr. Anna Cabeca
The holiday season can be stressful, but it doesn't have to stay that way. Dr. Anna talks about the importance of reflecting on the joys in our lives and honoring our experiences without getting frustrated or depressed. She also has the ultimate holiday health gift guide for you, filled to the brim with great ideas for giving the gift of good health this holiday season. [0:45] The holiday blues are a real thing and it's not just the stress of the season. [1:50] There are four pillars of health in the Girlfriend Doctor community: Embrace, Nourish, Shine, and Awaken, and there are gifts in each area that we give this season. [2:20] Celebrate the simple joys in your life. Reflect on the joys you experience because the more you focus on something, the more it expands and is magnetized toward you. Being able to sit and embrace that feeling is a skill that will change your physiology. [4:00] Dr. Anna is giving to the House of Hope, a place that she helped to start that helps young girls who have been trafficked. The other charity she is passionate about is the House of Dawn, a home for single moms that are finishing school while providing shelter and counseling. [6:40] If you know someone who needs help, or you need help yourself, email the team at dranna.com and tell us what you need. [7:10] The holiday season is about peace, and being present in this time of our lives. When you shift from fear-based thinking to being happy with your life as it is, it's a complete gamechanger. [8:30] The things and people that you have lost in your life can be honored in a spirit of love. Sorrow is a reflection of the joy you experienced with someone. Reflect on the joy you shared and journal it. Make it a daily practice. [10:10] The holidays can be stressful, but if you can recreate the joy in your life, you shift from fear to love and that higher emotional energy compounds. [11:00] Dr. Anna's gift guide has something for every member of the family. One of her favorites is a plant based milk maker called the Almond Cow. [12:50] Another big hit is Garden Guidance Cards, created by Dr. Anna's daughter. Each card gives you great ideas for cooking and preparing different vegetables and the benefits that come with them. [15:40] Olive oil is something that Dr. Anna likes to use frequently and the Olive Oil Club is a great way to get hand-picked olive oil for yourself or someone special. [16:30] The oral health detox kit from Trina Felber and the skin care line Wellena are two more top picks. Blue light blocking glasses are another great way to give the gift of good health. [17:55] If you've been saving all year for your own health, something like a water filter or air filters are a great option to level up your healthy lifestyle. [18:35] One of Dr. Anna's favorite gadgets recently has been an infrared sauna. There are various models and a huge number of benefits that go with infrared light therapy. [20:15] Gratitude is a practice and a discipline. Pay attention to the little good things in your life and you'll be surprised at how obvious it is that you're surrounded by joy. Does Adrenal Fatigue Really Exist? with Dr. Anna Cabeca and Ari Whitten
Red light therapy is the energy hack we need to support our mitochondria and re-energize our bodies. Ari Whitten goes into the science of the Energy Blueprint system and breaks down the myths around adrenal fatigue. Learn how we can repair our cells, increase our energy, and reduce inflammation with light therapy and by working with our body's natural hormonal and circadian rhythms. [0:50] Ari Whitten has done his PhD work on energy, is the host of the Energy Blueprint Podcast, and the author of the Energy Blueprint System. He's on the cutting edge of science when it comes to energy. [2:40] Health science has been Ari's passion since the age of 12 when he was into fitness and exercise, but he differed from traditional bodybuilders in their pursuit of muscle mass at any cost. [6:15] Ari was always fit and healthy until his early 20's when he was diagnosed with Epstein-Barr Virus and was floored for over a year with chronic fatigue. That experience became the seed of his fascination with the body's energy systems, how they work, and how to optimize them. [8:50] He got so deep into natural and alternative medicine in his effort to treat his adrenal fatigue, that he became very frustrated with traditional medicine's treatment of the condition. He started his research into the condition and found that there were almost no studies on adrenal fatigue in existence. [10:20] Chronic fatigue syndrome is the wastebasket diagnosis of the conventional medical world. The condition of adrenal fatigue is relatively unknown and unexplored and a catchall term for when the root issue is unknown. [11:25] Ari spent a year researching the topic and found a number of adjacent conditions. He was hoping to find a connection between cortisol and fatigue, but the evidence was pointing in the opposite direction. This put Ari on a quest to understand what is really going on within the energy systems of the body and the proper way to optimize them. [13:55] It turns out that most people's fatigue has nothing to do with their adrenal glands. Other factors play a much bigger part. Simply being a night owl can result in dramatically different cortisol rhythms throughout the day. [18:15] Medications can cause HPA axis dysfunction, as well mood states like depression and anxiety, being overweight and sedentary, and more. When it comes to the adrenal glands, it's an issue of light. [19:30] Most people believe they are night owls, but a study done in the journal Nature revealed that simply being in a more natural environment will reset a person's biological clock. Light and our hormonal rhythms have much more to do with fatigue than most people realize. [22:20] Ari's paradigm on energy levels involves the mitochondria and the brain. We're taught that mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cell, but we're finding that they are the most sensitive organs in our body when something isn't right. [25:15] The research of Dr. Robert Naviaux has shown that the mitochondria have two modes depending on the cell danger response. The modes are mutually exclusive, and when the cell shifts into a more defensive mode it shuts down energy production. [26:50] Mitochondria can detect a number of physical and biological signals that are risks to the cell. They will react to elevated stressors in the body and issue orders to the nucleus of the cell to reduce energy production and shift to other more defensive processes. [29:30] Any source of stress in the environment can shift mitochondria out of energy production mode, and light deficiency or toxicity can have the same effect. Most people are suffering from both. [33:20] Light isn't just one thing. Like nutrition, we need many different parts of the spectrum of light for our bodies to function optimally. Your circadian clock is directly impacted by light photons hitting your eyes and different kinds of light can have both positive and negative effects. [36:40] There is both light deficiency and toxicity. Most people are deficient in blue light during the day when they need it, and overexposed to blue light at night. The differential and timing has a direct impact on your circadian clock, and most people are suffering from both too much and too little blue light. [39:15] UV light from the sun is responsible for the creation of Vitamin D in the body which is related to many different hormonal processes. If we are insufficient in Vitamin D, it prevents a number of other processes from functioning properly. [41:20] Sun exposure increases nitric oxide. Sun exposure has been shown to prevent cardiovascular disease in rats even in the absence of vitamin D. [43:10] You can't replace the benefits of sunlight exposure with a Vitamin D supplement. [44:00] Red and near-infrared light play important roles that differ from other light nutrients. Red and near-infrared light penetrate the skin and interact with cells at the cellular level. When this happens, it stimulates the mitochondria to produce more energy. [47:40] Red and n
Optimal Health Begins in the Mouth with Dr. Anna Cabeca and Trina Felber
Your oral health is the gateway to your immune system. Trina Felber talks about how your oral health is directly related to the strength of your immune system, and how poor oral health can lead to a higher risk of heart disease, dementia, erectile dysfunction, and kidney disease. Learn exactly what you can do to have a healthier mouth right now and why you should be avoiding the off-the-shelf oral care products most people use today. [1:55] Good health starts inside your mouth. If you don't have the right bacteria inside your mouth it causes a number of other issues with your overall health, and your immune system is one of those things. [3:20] People who fail to brush their teeth twice a day may be putting themselves at risk of heart disease and advanced gum disease. Both of which can raise your risk of a fatal heart attack ten fold. Other increases in risk from poor oral health include bad breath, dementia, pneumonia, erectile dysfunction, and kidney disease. [5:10] Your mouth and vaginal health are directly related to the immune system and microbiome of your baby as well. [7:15] Your mouth is your first line of defense. You can transmit over 20 million bacteria with just one kiss. The goal isn't to get rid of all bacteria, it's to have the right kinds of bacteria in your mouth. Having an alkaline environment in your mouth prevents the bad bacteria from growing as well as having less plaque and stronger teeth. [8:40] Trina tells the story of a friend who was a dentist whose client was catching gum disease just by dating a guy with poor oral health. Your oral health is directly impacted by those closest to you, so you need to get them on board as well. [10:45] Dr. Anna shares her own experience in reversing the age of her own mouth. Most dentists will tell you that you can't reverse gum recession, but that's not true. You just need to address the root cause. Most people brush too hard. Your gums are soft, and when they are bleeding they become an open door for bacteria to spread throughout your body. [14:00] Nitric oxide is a vasodilator and is crucial to heart health. If your mouth bacteria is not healthy, then nitric oxide can't be produced optimally, so your heart, brain, and sexual organs will suffer from reduced oxygen and blood flow. Your oral health determines if your body can produce nitric oxide. [18:15] Dr. Anna recommends for her patients to periodically check their salivary pH. It can vary quite a bit throughout the day, but it's a good indicator of the mind/body connection at work. Stress and cortisol will affect the acidity of your oral health. [20:20] If your saliva is unhealthy, everything else is going to suffer. Supporting your oral health will always end up with fresh breath. [23:00] Everything inside your mouth you swallow, and that ends up seeding your gut bacteria. Your mouth is your connection between your gut and the outside environment. If you're not producing enough healthy saliva, you won't be able to eliminate harmful viruses and bacteria. [24:35] Your saliva should have minerals in it. If you have leaky gut syndrome, you're not going to have enough minerals in your saliva. This is why mothers often have sensitive teeth or cavities after giving birth. [25:20] If you can heal your mouth, you can heal your gut, which will in turn reinforce and support your oral health. If you're buying oral health products off the shelf, you are probably sabotaging your oral health by creating a more acidic environment. Just making a switch to other products can improve things dramatically. [27:05] Using natural products is better, but they may not be providing everything your mouth needs to be optimally healthy. The three components for a healthy oral care product is that it's alkaline, has minerals, and detoxes your mouth. Clay is the ideal medium for optimal oral health. [32:15] There is no point where we can ignore our oral health. People are seeing HPV in their mouth and it is a growing concern among aging Americans. Tenderness and hot spots are the warning signs that you may have an issue with your oral health and is something you should talk to your dentist about. [36:40] Oral health issues are amplified by a poor immune system. Getting to know your body and the health of your immune system is very important. [37:50] Over the past two years of the pandemic, we've been unknowingly creating the right conditions to grow the bad kind of bacteria. The LED teeth whitening system not only whitens your smile, the light therapy increases blood flow, reduces inflammation, and stimulates collagen. [41:40] Blue light therapy kills bad bacteria by affecting a particular molecule typically only found in the wrong bacteria and destroying it. Peroxide should be avoided because it breaks down your enamel as it's whitening your teeth. If your teeth are looking dingy, it's probably because your enamel is thin and peroxide makes your teeth thinner and more brittle. [46:30] Trina's system is meant to be a part
Creating Mindful and Resilient Children with Dr. Anna Cabeca and Dr. Madiha Saeed
Madiha Saeed is on a mission as the Holistic Mom to help children live healthier, happier, more mindful lives. Learn about the inflammation epidemic that is afflicting children today and what we as parents can do to help our children make more rational, healthy decisions by choosing nutrient-rich foods, focusing on gratitude and optimism, and creating a home environment where they can thrive. [0:40] What can we do as parents to raise mindful and resilient children with a combination of functional medicine and parenting? That's the question that Madiha's new book tries to answer. [1:25] Because of widespread chronic inflammation, children are unable to make rational decisions today which are resulting in a number of societal issues. [3:10] Madiha's mission began after seeing her newborn child struggle to simply breathe. She started her journey of self-healing and put those lessons into practice to help her children as well. [5:35] Chronic disease has quadrupled amongst children since the 1960s. Now 1 out of 2 American children has a chronic health condition. By 2025, the projection is that 80% of children will be diagnosed with a chronic health condition. ADHD has increased 167% and by current projections 1 in 4 children will be diagnosed with autism by 2033. [8:35] By understanding the why and the what, we can understand the root cause of suffering, which is that our children are living unbalanced lives. The decisions children make every day are determined by their brain, and studies have shown that inflammation reduces the connection between the prefrontal cortex and amygdala, both of which are needed to make rational decisions. [10:30] During a research study, they found that children with behavioral issues had high levels of key inflammatory markers. Inflammation can impact babies in the womb. Society lives unbalanced lives and the chronic inflammation that comes as a result is passed from mother to child. [12:30] Endocrine disruptors have been found to be closely linked to inflammation, hormone imbalances, and gender confusion that we are seeing now. Medications that were commonly prescribed to pregnant women in the past decades are being found to have multi-generational impacts and increased suffering. [16:10] There are thousands of chemicals that are released on a regular basis and we have no idea what their long-term impacts are. BPA is a common culprit that is found in most plastics, including baby bottles. [18:00] We need to be more mindful of what is going into our children's bodies and what they are wearing. As parents, we need to empower our children to make positive changes to their daily lifestyles and improve the future. [21:00] Our consumer choices matter. Science has proven that gratitude and optimism strengthen the link between the prefrontal cortex and the amygdala and improves overall health and wellbeing. [22:15] When a child has a chronic health condition, it can become hard to focus on anything else, but if you can shift the focus to the lessons they can learn and what is going right in their lives, it can help them optimize their brain, body, and health simply by reducing the overall stress level. [23:20] Devices and social media are addicting for children. We need to incorporate stress management practices like nature and physical play to balance out their daily routine. [24:55] There is a direct connection between our gut and our brain. The microbiome is vital to helping a child's brain develop fully and reduce inflammation. Nutrients regulate every single chemical reaction in a child's body. [26:25] Madiha uses a diet framework that starts with vegetables, proteins, and healthy fats. Make it easy and fun for your children to eat healthy food and teach them at a young age how it helps them keep their hormones in balance. [28:10] During the pandemic, diabetes has doubled in children. [28:55] Unfortunately, children today are deficient in a number of nutrients, and this causes a cascade of health issues. Madiha typically begins supplementing with vitamin D, fish oil, and probiotics. [32:10] The more kids can enjoy the process and participate in creating the healthy food they need, the more they will consume. [33:30] Mindfulness shows us how best to respond at many different levels at once. It allows children to have the perspective they need to live a healthy life. [35:20] The Holistic Rx is meant for anyone taking care of children who wants direction on how to live a mindful and healthy life. It centers around the child's health and diet, and how to help them recover from inflammation, insulin resistance, and more. Sexual Health Beyond Reproductive Hormones with Dr. Anna Cabeca
Understanding the seven key areas of health and sexual health are key to knowing what your next right step is and to unburden you from some of the guilt, grief, and self-sabotage in your life. Learn about the pillars of sexual health and what solutions women can access that will go beyond just dealing with their reproductive hormones to allow them to regain their sex life and enjoy sex again. [1:00] Dr. Anna has been practicing in the field of women's sexual health for years and today's episode deals with hot topics around sexual health, sexual function and dysfunction, and what you need to know to have a healthy and happy sex life. [3:25] The vagina is essential for life and it's vital to take care of your vagina as you age because our physiology drives our behaviour. [3:45] Testosterone affects our behaviour in various ways and its use has risen and fallen in favor as a therapy over time. Dr. Anna tells the story of a patient that was undergoing testosterone therapy and how high testosterone could have resulted in a major relationship issue. [5:45] Physiology affects behaviour, especially when it comes to sex. There are seven key areas of health that need to be in place to have normal sexual function. [7:45] Dr. Anna's story begins at the age of 39 when she was diagnosed with early onset menopause and infertility. She struggled with a number of health issues until she took a healing journey around the world. [9:55] PTSD reared its ugly head around the age of 48 for Dr. Anna and she experienced all the symptoms of menopause again. It takes more than hormones to fix a hormone problem. There are three additional hormones beyond the reproductive hormones that need to be brought into balance for optimal sexual health. [12:50] Dr. Anna's experience led her to try the keto diet, and she found the ketogenic lifestyle to be very powerful in treating and correcting her hormone imbalances. After adding in more alkalizing foods, Dr. Anna felt sharper and more focused than ever. [15:20] A research paper showed a direct correlation between glucose metabolism in the brain and endocrine and neurological symptoms. Glucose metabolism in the brain is an estrogen-dependent process, but the use of ketones for fuel is not hormone dependent. [16:30] The keto diet is very acidic and men tend to adapt more quickly to it due to their higher testosterone levels. Women need to address those differences, and the keto green diet works well for both genders. [18:00] On average, women in their 50's are on two or three different medications. [19:25] Hot flashes were recently linked to cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline. This is partly due to the loss of estrogen but that's not the whole picture. Insulin resistance is also linked to hot flashes. [20:50] We as women can do it all, just not at the same time. Research has shown that a large percentage of women over the age of 30 suffer from issues with arousal, vulva dryness, discomfort during or after sex, or urinary leakage. [22:50] One of the key underlying issues of sexual dysfunction are the underlying psychological causes. This dysfunction can then lead to emotional and self-confidence issues. [24:50] Only 17% of adults discuss their sex life with their doctor. [25:20] There is also medication-induced sexual dysfunction. There are a number of common medications that can have a negative impact on your sexual health. [26:15] A healthy vagina has an acidic pH. That acidity is the vagina's first line of defense and as women age the vagina tends to become more alkaline. Gut health and vaginal health are closely linked; if one is healthy, the other usually is too. [29:15] The human vagina is an underappreciated organ that is not merely a passageway for vaginal discharge, menses, sperm, and neonates, but can profoundly affect the health of a generation. [30:45] Many women power through uncomfortable sex despite being in pain. One of the most energetic and intimate things we can do is have sex, and if she isn't enjoying it, chances are he won't either. [32:10] Dr. Anna breaks down the case of a patient experiencing a variety of sexual health issues and what their treatment entailed. [34:55] Studies looking at the effects of vaginal DHEA found considerable hormonal benefits. [39:30] Estrogen replacement therapies were found in studies to not have any negative effects in cancer patients when compared to alternative therapies. [42:05] Another of Dr. Anna's clients was having trouble with orgasm. After Dr. Anna worked with her on the seven areas of sexual health and with focused therapies, she was able to regain the ability to orgasm. [43:25] About 10%-15% or women never achieve climax. Up to 75% of women never experience climax through intercourse. This emphasizes the differences between climax and orgasm and why it's important to communicate with your partner about the experience. The female sexual experience is also more complicated than a male's. [47:20] Reproductive hormones play a
Love, Oxytocin, and Contribution with Dr. Anna Cabeca
Dr. Anna shares the story of her experience struggling with PTSD and the fear of losing everything she had worked so hard to build up over the years, and how, through those struggles, she discovered the power of being willing to receive as well as contribute and give back. Learn why oxytocin is the most powerful hormone of all and how living a life of contribution is the best life you can have. [0:55] Community is healing. Being in a community increases oxytocin in the body which is the most powerful hormone responsible for the feeling of love and connection. [2:15] Our energy, thoughts, and emotions are held in certain parts of the body. We usually associate oxytocin with the heart, which is why heartbreak is a common and easily understood emotion. It's a physical as well as an emotional experience. [3:45] Dr. Anna was in California last weekend where she spent some relaxing time at a spa. While she was there she met a chiropractor who helped Dr. Anna release some tension in her back and during the treatment they did muscle energy testing to identify the source of the tension. [6:05] Dr. Anna tells the story of how her mother met her father, and how an early childhood experience of seeing her father lose his job impacted her. These memories came up during the treatment. [8:25] In the summer of 2017, Dr. Anna was struggling with PTSD after her husband suffered a traumatic brain injury. She closed her practice and rented out her house, all while struggling with being a single mom and going into perimenopause. [11:00] During that time, she had patients coming to her and asking for her help because doctors aren't comfortable with customizing hormonal therapies. She couldn't prescribe them medicine, but that was when she created Julva and brought the product to the market. [13:50] That same fear of loss must have been what Dr. Anna's mother felt after leaving the Middle East to marry her father. Sometimes we are hiding things from our children to protect them, but it can still bleed through. [16:00] Hurricane Irma hit that September which was another devastating hit to Dr. Anna's situation. The storm ruined the place she was staying with her family, and she was forced to turn to the church for support. [19:00] After some incredible effort from members of the church in cleaning up the destruction, Dr. Anna opened her home to another single mom with kids who had lost virtually everything, and they lived together for several months. [21:30] The more we contribute to others, the more good things we receive in our lives. After that period of time, Julva became a top selling product in the market. [22:50] Blessings should be paid forward. The energy of oxytocin is life giving. Through contribution and the giving of ourselves, we can let go of fear and take the next right step. How to Be Wild and Well with Dr. Anna Cabeca and Dani Williamson
If you've experienced trauma in your past, know that you're not broken, you're a survivor. Our past experiences can lead to chronic debilitating conditions but they don't have to be a life sentence. Dani Williamson suffered from a number of chronic lifestyle diseases related to her adverse childhood experiences, and now she's on a mission to help people understand how your diet can either heal you or kill you, and how you can overcome what you're suffering from with six steps to living wild and well. [1:05] Adverse experiences and the physical issues that come up from them are contributing to an explosion of depression, disorders, and suicide. Phone calls to suicide crisis headlines have gone up 800% since the beginning of the pandemic. Age 10 to 24 is the fastest growing demographic for suicide. [2:45] Dani grew up in a storm of chaos. Her grandfather died by suicide and her mother attempted to kill herself many times. Dani suffered from chronic diarrhea for years from the stress and 15 years later she was in a bad marriage, diagnosed with lupus, and was on the road to committing suicide. [4:15] Dani's kids were her reason for choosing to continue to live. She packed up and moved and decided to become a nurse practitioner. Despite the improvement in her relationships, Dani was still suffering from several conditions and it wasn't until one doctor, in particular, asked her about her diet did things start to change. [6:20] Checking her food sensitivities changed the trajectory of her career completely. Dani had seen four gastroenterologists before the age of 40 and not one of them asked Dani what she was eating. [6:45] Changing her diet turned her world around. She no longer needed to take medication for lupus or IBS, and she healed the inflammation in her body and now she's on a mission to help other people do the same. [7:35] You can reverse whatever it is that you've turned on from years of chronic dysfunction. [8:30] Adverse childhood experiences don't define us, but they do impact us. Those kinds of experiences can affect the very wiring of your brain. Dani's mother's second marriage was to a child molester who preyed on Dani when she was younger. [9:45] Dani's ACE score was 6. If you have a score of 4 or above, your risk of dying from stroke, heart attack, or suicide goes way up. In Dani's practice, she made the realization that almost all of her patients were suffering from some sort of childhood trauma. Dani now uses the ACE evaluation with every patient in her office. [11:40] Dani recently had a patient with an ACE score of 10 and at the age of 60. [12:35] Dr. Vincent Felitti was an internal medicine doctor and in 1985 noticed that 50% of the participants in his weight loss clinic were dropping out. One day he asked a patient how old they were when they first had sex, and this lead him to the realization that many of his patients had incredibly adverse childhood experiences. [15:00] Dr. Felitti started asking more related questions and developed them into the ACE test. He took the test to a number of different academies and was generally rejected until a person from the CDC recognized the importance of the test and they started one of the largest studies ever on childhood trauma. [16:45] What happens to you before the age of 18 can set you up for a lifetime of chronic lifestyle diseases, depression, suicidal thoughts. Every single chronic lifestyle disease risk is increased by a higher ACE score. [18:30] Every school missed the effect of adverse childhood experiences. Adverse childhood experiences are the single largest public health crisis in the United States and every single pediatrician should be offering this questionnaire.. [19:30] Women are 50% more likely to have an ACE score higher than 5. Your ACE score is directly linked to stress and the hormone cortisol. When cortisol is high chronically, we know that you have a much higher risk of developing an autoimmune disease. [22:50] Dani goes over the 10 ACE questions and how many people assume their experiences are the normal childhood experiences that most people have. [26:50] The ACE score is now a fundamental component of how Dani understands a patient's situation and what may contribute to their issues. [29:15] If you feel triggered right now, this could be your opportunity to recognize what has happened to you and turn things around. Your diet, sleep, and movement define the quality of your life and you can take back control. [31:15] Irregular bowel movements are a clue that you are not eating properly. You should be having a bowel movement once or twice a day, and if that's not the case you need to look at your diet. Your diet controls 90% of your health. [33:30] If your diet is mainly coming from a drive-thru window, you are creating systemic inflammation in your body. Inflammation is the root of every chronic lifestyle disease. [34:45] Many of the people with high ACE scores usually don't have a community around them, and that's a big co
Breaking Up with a Toxic Ex-Boyfriend (aka Sugar) with Dr. Anna Cabeca
Halloween is essentially the beginning of an avalanche of sugar until the end of the year for most people, but if you're not careful, you may be risking more than just rotting your teeth. Find out why sugar and stress is a deadly combination that you should definitely avoid, why the "diet" in diet soda is a cruel joke, and how you can ditch the toxic boyfriend known as sugar and start living the Keto Green lifestyle right now. [0:10] This is the season of sugar consumption and stress, and that combination leads to a lot of acidity in your system. It's time to break up with the toxic boyfriend that keeps on coming back, sugar. [1:35] Halloween is known for sugar, sugar, sugar. And right after Halloween the holiday season starts up and with it comes the temptation to eat even more sugary treats. Unfortunately, stress and glucose together can be a deadly combination that creates acidity and inflammation throughout your body. [3:25] Getting into the Keto green lifestyle is the secret to breaking up with sugar for good. [4:00] Dr. Anna's brothers were very into Halloween, and even as adults, still have Halloween parties now, but Dr. Anna is not so enthusiastic after a creepy interaction at the age of 11. Even with those differences between Dr. Anna and her brothers, their relationship with sugar has a familial factor. [5:30] Dr. Anna has diabetes on both sides of her family, so she's been extremely aware of those risks in her life. Type 2 diabetes is diet controlled and lifestyle based and it often results in Type 3 diabetes, also known as Alheimer's and Dementia. The combination of sugar and cortisol is a timebomb waiting to happen. [6:30] When Dr. Anna was on her healing journey around the world, she met a Native American shaman that recognized that she had high levels of sugar and acidity in her system and was surprised that Dr. Anna wasn't suffering from cancer already. [7:10] Keto Green is the opposite of sugar. It's ketones and alkalinity, and when you're in that state, you have the willpower to avoid sugar cravings. [7:30] Sugar is so addictive because it directly affects the dopamine in your brain, which is the hormone of addiction. 100 years ago, we consumed an average of 10-15 grams of sugar per day. Modern humans consume 10 times that amount. [8:15] Diet soda is a cruel joke. Just like sugar, artificial sweeteners trigger the same set of physiological processes. The worst thing is that artificial sweeteners will actually make you fatter. Studies on rats showed an association between consumption and incidents of metabolic syndromes like diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. [10:30] When your palate is cleansed, artificial sweeteners don't taste good. Listen to what your taste buds are telling you. [11:15] Eliminate aspartame from your diet completely. Dr. Anna helps people recover from the effects of artificial sweeteners because it's a critical part of healing from the neurological effects. [12:15] Whether you have the genetics for diabetes, you can reverse and improve your insulin response. Dr. Anna's father suffered from type 2 diabetes for years, and the symptoms gradually changed him over time. After speaking with his doctor, Dr. Anna decided to take her father's case on herself. [16:10] Dr. Anna put her father on an early version of her Keto Green diet, took away three of his medications and added a few supplements to his regime. In 30 days, her father lost 30 pounds and went from injecting 120 units of insulin per day to 20 units, and he began to feel amazing. [17:30] You are never too old to change things up in your life and your diet. Replacing sugar with healthy fats will transform your life. [19:30] Don't fall down the spiral of sugar addiction. Make strategic and healthy substitutes that taste great and empower you to avoid putting toxic sugar and artificial sweeteners in your body. [20:30] Give your kids healthy options. When they are full and satiated, they aren't going to want treats all the time. Give them reasons why the sugar isn't good for them and give them healthy options that taste great. [22:00] There is a lot going on in the world, but you can make a change by taking one step at a time. Write down what your next right step is, and then go take that step. Core Connections with Dr. Anna Cabeca and Erica Ziel
Erica Ziel, deep core exercise specialist, talks about the deep connections throughout the body and how your fascia and muscles impact everything from your toes to the top of your head. Learn about how Erica helps her students heal and release their fascia from inherited patterns of movement that cause dysfunction, and how to properly train your core to support your body and move without pain. [0:30] As a child, Erica had daily knee pains that only got worse as the years went on. After finally seeing a specialist about the pain, she was told the solution was to simply strengthen her legs. This put her on the path to learn about exercise science and the body. She began developing her own methodologies through her experience, especially when it comes to pre and post-natal women. [2:30] The pelvic floor and the fascia is a very important area of the body but people don't talk about it or how to address pelvic floor pain. The quality of your life depends a lot on the health of your pelvic floor. [4:00] So many women are told that healing isn't possible and that they just have to live with the pain and discomfort. [4:40] One common mistake that women make is drawing their belly toward their spine during exercise. This restricts breathing and blood flow to the pelvic floor. Tucking in your pelvis is another mistake that's come out of the fitness industry. You need to stop focusing solely on your glutes and think about your pelvic position. [6:15] Constantly rolling your shoulders is also an issue as the forceful movement shuts down your core. The more forceful you are in trying to force your body to do something, the more it rebels. [7:15] Be aware of how you are holding your body throughout the day. Try to stand more during your day and sit on a flat surface so you sit up taller. How you sit directly impacts your pelvic floor and lower back. Let your shoulders relax and use your mid back for support. [9:05] If you're standing, be aware of your knees. If you are locking your knees, it puts a lot of pressure on your lower back. [9:50] Dr. Anna has been experiencing more soas pain since the beginning of the pandemic. Any negative innervation in the connective tissues of our body is not good. As we age that tissue becomes more stiff and less flexible, which is why Dr. Anna advocates for an anti-inflammatory lifestyle. [11:25] Fascia is connected from head to toe and fascia release is an important part of healing the body. A strong core is critical to the healthy function of the pelvic floor. [12:50] Our inner line that begins at the big toe and goes up the inner thighs, pelvis, and hips has a direct impact on pelvic floor health. Many women experience back pain or pelvic floor issues without realizing it may be related. Many times, where you feel pain and dysfunction isn't the root cause. It's just the weak link that gave way first. [14:25] Fascia goes through and around all of our muscles, organs and nerves. Fascia informs the way that we move, some of which is hereditary. It's possible that you may have been walking wrong your whole life because of how you learned when you were a child. [16:10] The way that we have been moving in our life makes our fascia stronger for that movement pattern. As we walk we should be creating an oppositional spiral throughout our core, but many women are stiff and stuck when they walk. The spiral motion patterns allow the fascia to work throughout the body. [18:35] It's hard to relearn how to move. You have to trust your body's ability to move and change and improve. We can create new fascia and learn how to become strong in all movements by integrating the entire body as much as possible. [20:30] Functional exercise that incorporates moving the whole body is game-changing. Doing exercises correctly versus incorrectly makes all the difference in the world. Muscle is the organ of longevity, and women need to exercise to stay flexible, supple, and healthy. [23:00] Emotions are stored in the muscles of the body, with movement we can release these stuck emotions in the body. Our fascia system is so integrated, that when we start to increase the range of motion we can unlock a lot of feedback, especially when it comes to the pelvic floor. [26:00] Be ready to let go of the pain and dysfunction that is holding you back. It's a big piece of our healing journey to let go of the emotions related to the pain. [26:50] During Dr. Anna's healing journey, she learned from several spiritual healers that the breast holds relationships, the kidneys hold fear, the liver holds anger, the pancreas holds guilt, and the bladder holds the fear of letting go. In Eastern medicine, focusing on the emotional and spiritual aspects of healing is crucial and is something that Western medicine misses out on. [31:05] Your thoughts matter. Being grateful for the good things in your life will have a direct impact on your quality of life. Retrain your mind to focus on the positive instead of the negative and it will ch
Food Alchemy and Energy Work with Dr. Anna Cabeca and Serena Poon
Food is medicine and food is energy. The energy you bring to your food matters almost as much as the physical ingredients you combine in the recipe. Chef Serena Poon talks about how to bring love and positivity to your culinary creations and a simple technique to shift your energy state, practice gratitude, and show up as the most empowered version of yourself. [1:00] Serena's journey started with her parents, who both contracted cancer when they were in their 40's. Her father was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer and after he died, her mother was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer. The passion that drives Serena is rooted in that experience and what led to her learning about holistic nutrition. [3:30] The kitchen is the heart of the house. Serena went on to school to study food as medicine and to help people understand its power in their life. [4:45] Because her mother's cancer was so aggressive and she had lost so much weight during the ordeal with her father, they discovered the tumor during an exam. It highlighted what stress can do to our bodies, but Serena's mom was lucky that they were able to diagnose her early and operate on her. [6:40] Since Serena didn't have the same level of awareness that she does now, she had to have damaged tissue of her own operated on, and from that operation, she developed a deadly staph infection. That became her journey for the next eight years. It was during that journey that she discovered the power of energy and healing work. [8:30] Serena started working with an energy healer who helped her understand and release the energy she was holding within her body. Serena began experimenting with eating certain foods to complement the work she was doing with her energy healing. [11:40] What she learned became part of Serena's practice as a chef and is where the idea of food alchemy came from. She decided to study reiki as well and use that learning to understand energy flow and how to amplify what people can do when it's combined with food as medicine. [13:50] Reiki is an energy assessment and healing practice. Dr. Anna had her own healing journey and during her period of exploration after losing her son, she connected with a Reiki master who managed her practice and helped open her eyes to what was possible. [17:45] Reiki can enhance and elevate what you are already doing. Nutrition and using food as medicine can function in much the same way. [19:20] If you're making a recipe that was handed down to you by your grandmother but it doesn't taste quite the same, it's because it was being prepared by her unique love and energy that she brought to the effort. [20:35] Serena starts her gratitude practice at the beginning of the day. Pick one thing or person that you love, focus your love and attention on how it makes you feel until you have an almost physiological response to that thought. Now that you know how that feels, take that energy into the kitchen and with intention send that energy into the food that you're making. [23:05] This shifts your body from a sympathetic state to a parasympathetic state. Whatever you put into your body will be received differently as well. [24:20] You have opportunities each day to practice this technique and sit for a moment to connect with the energy of gratitude. If you can do that it will change your life. [25:00] Serena tells the story of a client in the entertainment industry that worked themselves to the point of being quite ill. Serena made some changes to their diet, but the main progress came from introducing meditation and sitting with a feeling of love and gratitude in an intentional way. [28:30] Dr. Anna's experience with her mother and her natural intuition is what made her realize that we are more than just what we see. We are energetic beings and we are in control of how we feel. [29:15] When you're stressed, you're in a negative energy spiral. All the little triggers of gratitude and thoughtfulness are how you can escape the spiral. [30:45] We are powerful beings, we just forget our power. We are obsessed with our devices and technology and forget that our bodies are some of the most powerful and complex machines on the planet. [32:15] Affirmations and mantras are another extremely easy way to practice gratitude. When you are brushing your teeth or taking your morning shower, instead of thinking about all the things you need to do that day, think empowering thoughts. That's how you start your day from a place of power and love. You don't need to go searching for that energy, you just need to reconnect with the source. [34:50] Bad things happen to us, we can't dismiss that. But we can shift our energy towards love so we can be fully in our purpose and connected. Every step in our lives has contributed to who we are. [37:30] When you are in a painful situation, it can be easy to ask why and focus on the negative. Serena believes that every part of our journey is meant for us, and is an opportunity to learn and then t
The Secrets of the Thermogenic State with Dr. Anna Cabeca and Dr. Stu Schaefer
Feel like you're hitting a plateau with your weight loss? Dr. Stu Schaeffer has been in the fitness industry for years and he's on a mission to help people lose weight easier and faster than they thought possible by unlocking the power of the body and the thermogenic state. Find out about the food quadrant that gets your body burning fat like a furnace and the three biggest mistakes that people make that sabotage their fat loss efforts. [1:25] Dr. Stu discovered the thermogenic state in 2009 after working with a woman who came to him to lose weight. He was still a relatively new trainer so he thought the solution was simply to have her reduce calories but after five weeks she hadn't lost a single pound. [3:00] Dr. Stu decided to offer his services for free until he figured out what was happening and dove into a two-week research process. He learned about repressed metabolic syndrome, where if you diet too long or exercise too often the body will basically prevent fat loss completely. He put his client on the counter intuitive "eat more, exercise less" plan and after 12 weeks she lost over 37 pounds of fat. [5:30] Dr. Stu began testing the plan out on other clients and they saw similar results. Because they were eating more, their cravings vanished, they had more energy, and their mental clarity increased. [6:20] Dr. Stu uses a tool called the food quadrant for his clients. There are four components to nutrition: what foods to eat, how much you eat, when to eat certain foods during the day, and when not to. When you combine the right foods in each meal you can enter a thermogenic state and start burning fat like a furnace. [8:20] Dr. Stu recalls a client who swore her hormones were off because she had 15 pounds to lose that just wouldn't budge. Dr. Stu got her to her goal in 8 weeks after 7 years of her trying to do it on her own. [10:05] When you get to eat a lot it's easy to maintain because you don't feel the same cravings that you do on a restrictive diet. [12:10] The first mistake that a lot of people make when they are trying to lose weight is they believe they are eating healthy but actually aren't. When you eat fruit by itself, it has the same impact on your body as eating a cookie. Fruit has the same insulin response as sugar. [13:55] Mistake #2 is eating carbs at dinner. In the evening, your body is getting ready to sleep and your metabolism starts slowing down around 4pm. Eating carbohydrates at dinner is like pumping raw energy into your body, and since it can't be used, it gets stored as fat. [15:30] You become more insulin-resistant towards the end of the day. This is why you need to eat different foods in the morning than you do in the afternoon or evening. [15:50] The third mistake that many people make, especially women, is not eating a complete protein in every meal. Different foods have different types of proteins, which is why a lot of vegetarians and vegans struggle to get enough complete proteins in their diet. [18:30] Getting into the thermogenic state is very enjoyable because it gives you a lot of flexibility in what you can eat. In the thermogenic state, you literally become warmer. The main components of getting into this state are nutrition, weight training, and cardio. [20:20] A study done in 1997 looked at what the optimum amount of exercise was for health and fat loss. They found that three days of weight training for 30 minutes each day was the peak, and when you exercised more frequently it actually worked against you. Simple straight forward exercises yielded the best results. [22:05] When you weight train and do cardio for a total of 3 hours a week and combine that with the four quadrants of nutrition, your body goes into a thermogenic state and your body starts burning fat and preserving muscle. [22:40] A lot of women say they don't want muscle and just want to look toned and tight, but that's exactly what weight training accomplishes. [26:15] For most people, a simple approach is best. To keep things fresh, it can be as subtle as changing the order of the exercises you do or the style. The body also tends to acclimatize to eating the same foods all the time, so try eating a different kind of fish or switch from chicken to turkey. You don't have to make huge changes to see results. [29:40] A good coach will look at you and customize a plan for you. There are three elements that need to be part of that plan for it to work: will it work, do you like it, and does it fit your lifestyle? Without those three, either you are not going to get great results or you won't be able to maintain your results. [32:00] One of Dr. Stu's clients was eating one meal a day, not feeling hungry, but couldn't lose weight despite trying for 8 years. The plan was to ease into eating more, and exercising lightly because they were suffering from extreme repressed metabolic syndrome. Once the body starts functioning the way it's supposed to, everything starts normalizing. [34:25] The most common mista
Dealing With and Healing Unresolved Stress with Dr. Anna Cabeca and Dr. Nicole Huffman
Have you felt more tired recently? Maybe more pain, brain fog, memory loss, trouble sleeping, or maybe all of the above? These are all symptoms of stress, whether that's the everyday variety or unresolved stress hidden deep within your body. Dealing with your stress can unlock a new way to live your life. Dr. Nicole Huffman is on the podcast to talk about the emotional arm of your health and how you can release the stress from your body that's preventing you from living your life to its fullest. [0:50] Dr. Nicole has lived in many different places, but after falling in love with horseback riding a couple of years ago, they were looking for a new home and found a place that came with a horse and two donkeys. It became the obvious choice. [3:00] Horses teach you about the energy that you bring into a room. If there is something going on with you, the horse is going to feel it. This plays into the idea that our physical health has an energetic component. Other people may put up with your energy but a horse will let you know right away. [5:50] Dr. Nicole's practice is in-person one day a week at Dr. Jill Carnahan's clinic and the rest of the week is spent in remote consultations. [7:30] Dr. Nicole uses muscle testing to communicate with a patient's nervous system. Whether an arm is strong or weak can tell you a lot about what is going on with the rest of the body. [7:55] Dr. Nicole looks at the body three ways. Is there something structurally wrong, chemically absent, or are there emotional issues? Unresolved stress has physical impacts on the body and dealing with that stress often results in the physical symptoms disappearing. [10:00] Dr. Anna went through a period of post-traumatic stress which resulted in early menopause and infertility. This put her on a journey to learn about stress and understand its impacts on the human body and how it can be reversed. [11:35] There are multiple forms of stress. It can come from your emotions, your food, or the electrochemical environment you are in. When you feel emotional stress that you can't control, addressing your diet and removing those sources of stress can make your emotions easier to manage. [12:45] Dr. Anna recommends to her patients to write down their stressors and controls on a piece of paper. Pair each thing that stresses you with something you can control to minimize issues. [14:25] Unresolved stress is often deeply rooted in the body and the most common way of dealing with it is ignoring it (aka. Not dealing with it). If you are responding to a situation like a six year old, it's probably due to an unresolved stress from when you were younger. [16:20] There are different techniques and treatments that can help deal with this kind of stress, you just have to test and experiment to find the one that's right for you. [17:25] Adverse childhood experiences deeply affect us throughout life, but especially during periods like menopause where there is a drop in progesterone. Anytime cortisol levels are higher it's going to ignite stresses that haven't been resolved. [19:05] Dr. Nicole sees many women with low hormones living under the thumb of cortisol. The pandemic has only exacerbated the stress issues. [20:05] People with excessive stress experience low energy, irregular period cycles, and interrupted sleep. When you're overwhelmed with stress, little things can really set you off. [22:30] Weddings are extra complicated and stressful right now. Dr. Nicole uses muscle testing tests to identify and clear emotions around the things they can and can't control. Often, when past traumatic events do come up you will feel tired and exhausted for the following few days. [25:05] There are a few techniques that you can do at home to run a muscle test but you're best off being in an objective and clear space to get accurate results. Muscle testing is like a physical manifestation of your intuition. [28:45] Don't let unresolved issues affect your physiology. You have to shed your old self and unresolved stresses. [30:45] When someone comes into Dr. Nicole's practice, it starts with talking about their history and going deep on their life and what stresses them oute. Then she starts muscle testing to see what the body wants to deal with first. [31:45] When you work with the highest priority issue, everything else will fall into line. You may not need 10 supplements if you deal with unresolved stress or the primary cause of your problems. [32:10] Health is not the absence of symptoms, it's feeling truly amazing. Bipolar or Hormonal? with Dr. Anna Cabeca
Are you feeling crazy? It may just be your hormones talking. Dr. Anna explains how your hormones have a direct impact on your emotions and moods, and when things fall out of balance, you can feel like you've been swept up in a storm of anxiety, depression, rage, and everything in between. Learn how to rebalance your hormones with the Keto Green diet and supplements, and by doing the things that make you smile. [2:10] There are two days of the year where Dr. Anna allows herself some space, her son's birthday and angel day. The day her son passed away is an important day for celebrating his life. [3:20] The loss of her son in 2006 took her on a journey, spiritually, mentally, physically, and emotionally. It was a journey that took her around the world looking for answers in trying to understand how to live after such grief. [5:00] Dr. Anna was a researcher before she went to medical school, but all the schooling she had didn't prepare her for living the experience. Our hormones can play havoc with our moods and physiology drives behaviors. Unhealthy choices can destroy our physiology. [6:15] There are many times in a woman's life where these hormonal fluctuations occur, including pre menstruation and the hormonal transition into menopause. When you have had post traumatic stress or adverse childhood experiences, it generally translates to more challenges in menopause. [7:05] If you consider the hormonal milieu like a pressure cooker, progesterone acts as a lid to the pot. When you add in stress it increases the pressure, and in menopause when progesterone declines, it's like taking the lid off the pot. [8:30] In December 2018, there was an article published that explored the second peak of age where women suffer from psychosis. [9:45] There are certain things you should not say to your significant other regarding their hormones. Behaviors that don't normally bother you will suddenly cause you serious stress during certain periods. Our hormones are integrally related to our neural transmitters and have a serious impact on our emotions. [12:25] Progesterone is the main hormone that all other hormones are derived from. In times of stress our reproductive hormones are sacrificed to create cortisol. Gaba is a feel-good hormone that helps us relax, and it's directly affected by the downstream direction of progesterone production. [14:20] During Dr. Anna's second menopausal transition, she experienced severe hormonal disruption. It was a very difficult time before she made the decision to do things that increased oxytocin and supported production of progesterone. [15:55] Oxytocin is the most powerful hormone in our body. Doing things that we find fun and make us smile is crucial to a happy life. Supporting progesterone with supplements also helps with overdrive and burnout. [17:55] When you are experiencing mood swings, it's a function of your hormones. Estrogen is essentially for the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Most of our serotonin is produced in the GI tract, which is why the microbiome is so important. [19:00] When estrogen and serotonin dip during perimenopause, it affects the amount of glucose produced in the brain which results in brain fog. [20:55] During PMS, women are often prescribed SSRIs. These might deal with some of the symptoms, but you aren't increasing your natural production of serotonin, which usually results in progressively higher doses. This is why functional medicine focuses first on repairing the gut. [22:45] Dopamine is the other neurotransmitter to think about. It's responsible for seeking novelty and to have healthy levels of dopamine. You also need healthy levels of testosterone which will increase dopamine, and in turn, can increase the desire for new experiences. [26:30] As our testosterone depletes we feel like we have lost our edge. It can lead to a loss of desire in doing most things. [27:10] We have to address our hormones in a holistic way. When your hormones shift, it's your body sending out a cry for help. Avoid just powering through until "it gets better" because there is no telling what casualties will be left in your path from that approach. [29:00] There are over 200 symptoms associated with PMS and menopause. If you only hate your husband for two weeks out of the month, it's not your husband, it's your hormones. [30:45] Have a good night's sleep (7-9 hours) whenever possible. A relaxing night time ritual is critical. Avoid blue light generated from computer screens. Stretch before bed and do things that help you relax. [32:25] Supplement with progesterone. There are a number of different supplements on the market that you can use that will help balance your hormones overall. [36:20] The dietary changes that we make can improve our willpower and physiology. Break up with sugar and embrace the Keto Green lifestyle. [37:20] Indulge in dark chocolate. Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidants and can help with PMS at the time of your period. [38:10] Don't forget
A Long, Healthy Life with Dr. Anna Cabeca
Nourish your body from the inside out to live a long, happy, and healthy life. Dr. Anna breaks down the science behind longevity and explores the key supplements to promote health and reduce inflammation, how to reduce and avoid the toxins and endocrine disruptors we face everyday in our lives, and why love is the best medicine of all. [0:15] Longevity begins in the womb. What we do for our health matters for generations. In the past episode Dr. Anna talked about a number of different treatments that were meant to help maintain a pregnancy, but instead resulted in a plethora of negative effects generations down the line. [1:05] There are age reversal techniques that everyone can do that can have tremendous genetic and generational positive benefits. [1:40] The healthier we are as a community and with our relationships the longer we live with a high quality of life. Love, laugh, and give is a great mindset to start your day and end your life with. [3:50] Treatments can have generational effects. Endocrine disruptors like Diethylstilbestrol (DES) were touted as a wonderful, universal drug for pregnant mothers but resulted in numerous negative effects. [4:50] Dr. Anna recently attended the Da Vinci 50 conference and Dr. Gregory Church recommended that the FDA should require third generational animal studies before releasing a medication out to the public. Most medications today do not meet that standard. [6:30] Protect yourself from toxic overload and hormone disruptors. In many places, disruptors can even be found in tap water. [7:30] Another key area that affects our longevity is our epigenetics. If you don't have your 23andMe health yet, it can be a good idea to get it. Knowing how well you methylate will determine the best types of supplementation for you. [8:40] You also need to pay attention to toxin exposure. Things like fireproof treated fabric can be absorbed through the skin, and particular GMOs can cause issues. [10:05] Anything with PCBs is considered highly toxic. Dioxin, a byproduct from chloride containment processes, can linger in the environment for years and diminishes the production of thyroid hormones. [10:50] A recent patient came to Dr. Anna with low testosterone. Before dealing with the symptom, it's important to address the cause of the problem. Her approach was to do an endocrine toxicity screen and address the thyroid issues. [12:40] If you're suffering from low testosterone, we have to ask where the testosterone is going. Is it being converted to estrogen? Is it becoming dihydrotestosterone? These could result in either man boobs or hair loss, so it's important to understand what is going on. [13:55] Most of us haven't been aware of the potent complication of endocrine disruptors. We are seeing an overall increase of infertility, early menopause, and early andropause. [14:20] Phthalates are very common in the plastic drinking bottles we use. Avoiding BPAs is also important, which are found in plastics as well as metal food containers. The rule of thumb is to reduce our exposure to toxins as much as possible. [17:30] Off-Gassing of chemicals can also occur in your shower curtain and dry cleaning bag. Switching to a natural fiber shower curtain is an easy, quick fix. [18:00] Even something as innocuous as the receipts you get at the store have BPAs on them. Cashiers should think seriously about using gloves while handling receipts all day. [19:10] Seek out products that have the FDA-certified Organic label. The reverse should be the norm, where foods are labeled as grown with pesticides, but that's the reality we live in. [20:55] Heavy metals are major endocrine disruptors. Mercury from fish, and lead in air pollution, all impact fertility and cause complications in pregnancy. Dr. Anna often tests patients for heavy metals and recommends natural chelators. Vitamin C and certain foods like garlic, ginger, broccoli sprouts, and more help reduce toxic heavy metals in the body. [27:00] Chromosome maintenance and repair will improve all the downstream symptoms. Telomere erosion and genetic errors age us rapidly. Natural aging can be accelerated through life and environmental stresses like smoking, high blood sugar, high blood pressure, and inflammation. [27:50] Inflammation accelerates aging universally, from your hair to your skin to your brain cells. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cell, and when they are functioning poorly for a number of different reasons, it leads to rapidly declining energy and fatigue. [29:15] Anyone with autoimmune issues is affected by rapid aging. The lower your basal metabolic rate, the more unhealthy you are. [30:30] Glucose regulation is the number one recommendation from experts in longevity. Keeping your glucose levels steady throughout the day with a diet like Keto Green will certainly help. Especially for women going through menopause, a stable blood sugar and a habit of fasting can drastically improve the quality of your life. [34:10] Sticking with
First - Do No Harm! with Dr. Anna Cabeca
It's important to be empowered regarding your health and any intervention you are considering, especially if you are pregnant. Dr. Anna discusses two cases from recent history of medical interventions that were once approved for use with pregnant women, but turned out to have serious side effects, and explains why it's important to make your own decisions regarding your health. [0:05] Do no harm is part of the Hippocratic Oath that doctors take which essentially means that doctors are students of harm, and deeply understand the risks and benefits of medicines and procedures. [0:45] There have been a couple of interventions done in the past that were approved until we better understood the long-term consequences, but the initial push back on an intervention is often met with ridicule. [2:00] Dr. Anna recently published a Facebook post saying that pharmaceutical companies should be held liable for vaccine injuries which was met with not one, but two people shaming her for her viewpoint. [3:30] DES was initiated in 1941 and was originally meant to reduce the risk of miscarriage. It wasn't until 1971 did the FDA pull the drug from the market. It was found that not only did the drug not have the intended effect, it increased the risk of a clear cell adenocarcinoma of the vagina in girls as young as 8 among other side effects like increased risk of breast cancer and infertility. [5:35] There is an ongoing study of people exposed to DES in utero going into the 2nd and 3rd generations. [7:10] Dr. Anna looks at a study published in 2018 looking at the genetics of grandchildren of people exposed to DES as well as advertisements used to promote the intervention at the time. The advertisements essentially guaranteed a live birth, which was definitely not the case. [8:45] For sons of women who took DES while pregnant, they had a higher percentage of epididymal cysts and smaller testes. If your partner has experienced these symptoms, it's important to check out the medical records and find out if their grandmother may have taken DES in the past. [10:05] In any case, it's always better to diagnose cancer sooner rather than later. Research is showing that the third generation of men have an increased risk of hypospadias. [10:35] Gender orientation studies showed a slightly higher percentage of men reporting being gay or bisexual as a result of being exposed to DES in utero. [11:40] More recent studies have revealed a correlation between early exposure to DES and cancer, cardiovascular disease, myocardial infarction, depression, earlier menopause, and infertility. [12:50] We need to look at the studies and consider the risks of any intervention. We should be accountable for the effects that may happen to not just us, but in additional generations. [13:25] We are what we eat, ate. What our food has been injected with and treated with has an impact on us, especially hormone disruptors which have been shown to have a history of genetic effects. [14:25] We need full transparency of the risks and benefits of any intervention, especially in pregnancy. [15:10] Thalidomide was also FDA approved for pregnant women in the United States in the past and was first thought to help with morning sickness. It was removed from the market in Europe in 1961 because of an incredibly high number of birth defects linked to the intervention. [17:05] Thalidomide can also be transferred through a man's semen, which can expose their partner to an increased risk of blood clots and autoimmune issues. [17:40] Many drug reps have approached Dr. Anna with some fantastic-sounding treatments, but they often end up having unintended consequences. [18:20] Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis was the first to recognize that children born in midwifery centers did better than children born in a medical center. He showed that by simply having the doctor wash their hands before handling the baby they could reduce childbirth fever to below 1%. For his efforts, he was ridiculed, stripped of his medical license, and had a nervous breakdown. [19:50] It wasn't until the work for Louis Pasteur confirmed the germ theory did people understand what Dr. Semmelweis was saying. [20:25] Practice medicine that makes sense. Use the best information we have at the time and empower the individual in physical, mental, and spiritual health. We can support our immune system with good nutrition. We can support our minds with gratitude practices. [21:30] Empower your health, regardless of what you may have been exposed to in utero. Treat your body like a temple and do what's right for you. Don't be afraid to ask questions about a treatment. [23:05] Empower oxytocin to be the leading hormone in your body. Every decision you make will lean towards fear or love. Choose love. Looking Back At What I've Learned Over The Past 55 Years with Dr. Anna Cabeca
Dr. Anna talks about turning 55 and the lessons she's learned along the way. She reflects on how her body has changed and the wisdom she learned from her role models growing up, including a couple powerful insights from her mother, and the unique challenge that is going through menopause while raising daughters going through puberty. [0:25] Dr. Cabeca recently celebrated her 55th birthday on July 28th and managed to do it with her friends and family around her. This experience really emphasized the gift of life to Dr. Anna and made her realize how much you should avoid taking things for granted. [1:30] Aging is inevitable, along with the grey hair and wrinkles that come along with it. The interesting thing is that, despite her age, Dr. Anna has more energy now than she did over a decade ago and is in the best relationships of her life. [2:25] Being 55 is a time of reflection. She has to pace herself and sleep more than before, but after reinventing herself personally and professionally in her 40's, she is able to have the independence and freedom in her 50's that she never thought she would. [3:10] The hardest job she's ever had has been being a single mom, but it's been a wonderful experience being a part of her daughter's lives as they grow. Going through menopause at the same time as a daughter going through puberty has been uniquely challenging though. [4:15] What were your dreams as a child? Tapping into that vision can have a powerful influence on your future and the rest of your life. Dr. Anna is not living the life she expected, but one that's even better. [4:50] Having the time to be there for her daughters has been a big improvement, which wasn't possible when she was a busy OBGYN being run off her feet. [5:20] Dr. Anna had a number of role models growing up, each of them strong, powerful women. She witnessed her mother in life and death give love everyday of her life and the lessons she learned from her shaped Dr. Anna deeply. [6:05] Your education is something that no one can take away from you and you won't put your hand out to anyone. Travel is your best form of education. Learn from the languages people speak and the way they greet you. That's how you get to know culture and understand people better. [6:40] What are you teaching to your children? What will your legacy be? [7:00] Keeping a vision for the future is a powerful gift. At 55, Dr. Anna is able to appreciate the smallest things and understands that she often needs to do less instead of pushing for more. The Energy Formula with Dr. Anna Cabeca and Shawn Wells
Shawn Wells is on the Girlfriend Show to talk about why purpose and intention, when combined with exercise and nutrition, is the foundation for a healthy long life. Learn how to detox your body and your life with the ENERGY formula, how to biohack your body with powerful natural supplements, and the secrets to making the most of the ketogenic diet. [1:25] Writing a book is a major undertaking. Shawn recently spent the last year and a half of his life working 30-40 hours each week, getting all of the pieces together for his latest book. [3:05] The ENERGY acronym stands for Experiment, Nutrition, Exercise, Routines, Growth, and Your Tribe. For the last 20 years, Shawn has been accumulating and amassing all of this knowledge and the book was his attempt to put it all into one easy-to-consume format. [5:35] What does biohacking mean? There are shortcuts to improving your vitality and biological function, like bulletproof coffee, sun gazing, cold plunges, and red light saunas. It's the mashup term for hacking your biology. [7:10] Hacktivism is the use of hacking for the greater good and Shawn used this idea for the basis of the book. The more you are energized and alive, the more you can connect with the world around you. [8:00] Before going to medical school, Dr. Anna worked with the military training deep sea divers. This experience came into play in Dr. Anna's own journey of being stressed and depressed after going through early menopause and living a difficult, fast paced life. [10:00] The less mitochondrial function you have, the less energy you have. Not having sufficient cellular energy will lead to more inflammation and stress the mitochondria even further. [11:20] There is a psychological component at play. You can be your own placebo by shifting your mindset and reframing a situation in a positive light. The trouble is that most people reframe things negatively by default. [13:40] There is a positive or negative charge to your thoughts and those thoughts can affect the smallest physiological processes in your body. [16:10] Exercise snacks are a unique idea that's floating around where small bursts of movement spread out throughout the day are more impactful than one hour of concentrated activity. So many of our physical issues are a result of the typical sedentary lifestyle as our bodies adapt. It's important to keep our bodies in motion, whether that's planks or squats for a few minutes each hour. [20:30] 88% of the population is in a state of metabolic dysfunction and heading toward insulin resistance. This resistance will exacerbate the energy gap and the fastest way to solve this issue is having an alternate source of energy in ketones. This is where the keto diet comes in. [22:45] Insulin resistance is the hallmark of all biological aging. Around 1% of disease is genetic; the 99% is metabolic and driven by being insulin resistant. The standard American diet and lifestyle is mainly to blame for why so many people in the West are getting sick and tired. [26:10] When Dr. Anna shifted to a ketogenic diet, she saw a major shift in her energy level and focus. Getting into ketosis is incredibly powerful for healthy brain function. [27:10] If you're not getting the results you want from your keto diet, you are probably not eating enough fat. You have to shift away from the idea that "you are what you eat," to "you burn what you eat." If fat is the number one macronutrient in your diet, your body will optimize to become a fat burning machine. [28:40] The latest keto snacks and treats may also be a source of problems. Trying to eat a ketogenic version of the traditional Western diet may put you in the awkward state of not being optimized for either mode. It's also very easy to go overboard on these types of products. [30:15] Your energy level is your best indication that you're succeeding on the ketogenic diet, not your level of ketones. If you're not testing your ketones, you're guessing. [32:40] Don't worry too much about your glucose levels going up after eating food; the important thing to watch is how quickly it comes back down. Feast days are good for making sure you don't become metabolically inflexible. [34:05] Snacks destroy men's and women's metabolisms. The idea of balancing your blood sugar by snacking all day has not worked out well for people. [35:50] The number one place to start is to dump ultra processed food, move your body, stop snacking, and stop thinking you need dessert after every meal. Eliminating the snacks before you adopt a ketogenic diet will only make it more effective once you do. [37:55] Nootropics are substances that grow your mind and enhance brain function. One of the reasons that keto is so effective for most people is that it turns the lights back on in your mind so they don't have to compensate with caffeine and sugar. [38:40] Healing your metabolism and allowing it to properly use glucose is going to enhance your energetic states and grant better brain function. [41:30]

Getting a Shingles Wake Up Call with Dr. Anna Cabeca
Dr. Anna tells the story of how she got a big wake up call about her life and health after she got shingles during a recent vacation. Find out why Dr. Anna felt betrayed by her body at first but then came to realize that the shingles were a sign that she needed to slow down and reconnect with what her body needed to thrive and what you need to do to do the same. [0:55] We often get wake up calls in life that tell us there is something better we need to be doing for our health. [1:55] Dr. Anna recently had an experience with shingles after traveling and working across several states. While shooting a documentary with Dr. Trevor Cates in Park City, Utah. she woke up with a lesion on her back. The next day, the number of lesions increased to four. [4:10] Her first response was to be angry at her body and frustrated that, despite eating healthy foods and living a healthy lifestyle, her body still became infected with an uncomfortable disease. But was she really as healthy as she believed? [4:50] Shingles is a disease caused by the chickenpox virus and often ends up buried and dormant in a particular nerve dermatome. Shingles tend to wrap around and stay limited to one half of your body, and often causes a lot of pain, including long-term neuropathic pain after the disease is gone. [7:05] Roughly 1 in 1000 people will experience shingles in their lifetime and the number of adults over the age of 30 getting it has been increasing since 1998. We have to look at what is compromising the immune system of young adults and causing this increase. [7:50] When we are stressed, our body is producing cortisol which is a natural anti-inflammatory hormone. If there is inflammation in your system and you go on vacation, underlying infections can flare up. This is the likely scenario with Dr. Anna's shingles infection. [10:05] As soon as she realized that the infection was shingles, she immediately started antiviral therapy and increased the immune boosting supplements she was taking. [10:40] Eventually, she was no longer angry at her body for "failing" her but, instead was thankful for her body showing her that she needs to slow things down and take the rest her body was asking her for. [11:40] Between the treatment and rest, Dr. Anna was able to beat the shingles within the week. [11:55] Dr. Anna's Immune Protocol was crucial to her success in treating the shingles in addition to the power of alkalizing superfoods and higher vitamin intake. [12:50] When it comes to shingles, vitamin D3 is especially powerful as a treatment. [14:25] Vitamin C is our immune champion. It's necessary on a regular basis because it supports so many vital functions of our bodies. Added together with the other elements of the Immune Bundle, you have a powerful support system for your health and immune system. [17:10] There is a shingles vaccine that you can get if you're in the US called Shingrex. If you're over the age of 50 and may have a weaker immune system, it may be a good option for you. [18:15] You need to be thinking about how you are treating your body. Are you taking time to destress? Are you nourishing your body with healthy foods that support a strong immune system? Get ahead of shingles before it becomes a major issue for you.
