Despite falling short in the State Championship game this season, DJ Green was rewarded with the 3A State Tournament MVP Award as he absolutely dominated throughout the tourney. This was a season of ups and downs for the McCall-Donnelly basketball program, but Green led them to the State Tournament where they had a massive showout. Doing play-by-play broadcasting for the 3A Tournament on behalf of the NFHS Network this year, I caught the semi-final matchups and was able to call DJ's game. I was blown away at the athleticism and overall ability to play at such a high level! Then I watched him in the State Championship as they fell just short of the title! Growing up in the Gronkowski family, it was normal to be a competitor. The brothers, five of them within a ten-year window, always competed and helped elevate one another. Since they were given the go-ahead to play, Brody and the Warriors program started off the 2021 season with a bang! Their ability to win games and dominate both offensively and defensively, is due in large part to the 6'11" P/C for the Warriors. Brody can truly do it all! Our college years are filled with stress enough as it is. You have homework, deadlines, exams, etc. If you are an athlete, you have even more stress to go along with it as you have to add your training hours and GPA requirements to the mix. Now, imagine you were living with a "secret" that you hadn't told anyone. A secret about who you "truly were." Emma Gee, a former BYU Runner, became the first openly LGBTQ athlete at Brigham Young University when she came out just a few years ago. Today she shares her story of sports and courage. We hear what it was like in her position and what it was like before and after coming out. BYU is indeed a private university, owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and like many private schools, has an honor code they uphold. This is another topic of discussion for Emma and myself as I ask her about why she continued to go to school at BYU, knowing it was a private university with those guidelines set in place that didn't necessarily go in line with her lifestyle. In the Jewish religion, the Sabbath is observed from sundown Friday until Saturday evening. It's something that has been observed for thousands of years. For Tamir Goodman, this has been part of his life and he wasn't going to allow anything to change his faith and the way in which he practiced his faith. Even if it meant adjusting his basketball schedule around. During his high school days, he climbed up the rankings to being a top-25 player in the country, and he had a decision to make. He originally committed to Maryland, and ultimately made a big-time decision highly influenced by his faith and Sabbath Day observance, to change his commitment and play at Towson. His journey is super unique and inspiring. It's a story of a young man, who knew what he believed in and stood for what he believed in, in a world where this is very difficult to do. Colby Blaine has ascended through the coaching ladder quite quickly, and for good reason! As head coach at the College of Idaho, the teams he has led, have compiled a record of 62-9. He had his team ranked #1 in the NAIA Division II rankings before heading to the tournament last season, which like the rest of college athletics, ended abruptly due to the coronavirus pandemic.
