Dead Show/podcast for 2/8/13

I've had some requests for a 90s show and I thought this would be a nice change of pace this week. This was one of my favorite outdoor venues as a show here was, for all the hassles, usually a gas. This show, from Buckeye Lake in the summer of 93, was a blast. I think the band was having fun and playing well. The Jerry tunes here are fun to hear and I'm a real fan of the Tom Thumbs if this era as well as the Masterpiece. We'll hear the interesting set two next week. Nothing beats a fine second set like this one from fall of 73.. a great mix of songs.. starts off with some great classic, rocking numbers, then a truly fine Weather Report Suite - be sure and listen to the wonderful ensemble playing at the end.. I think you'll find the Dark Star that follows to be quite memorable.. it starts off quite softly .. but it certainly explores some unexpected spaces.. the Eyes that follows is very well played as is Wharf Rat.. I know I have a weakness for this era of GD, but I think this really holds up well and shows once again, the wide variety of styles the band could play and the wide number of spaces they could take us to. Dead Show/podcast for 1/18/13

I think this is a really nice second set from the great Fall of 1980 tour.. it contains some of my favorite songs and I think that Jerry and the band do them all justice. In particular the opening 'Feel Like A Stranger' however the following 'To Lay Me Down' is just too short and too sweet... The Let It Grow is back to full throtle Dead, and flows into a short but sweet Terrapin Station.. While the rest of the set may not match the pre-Drums peak, its still certainly worth listening to and remembering what moments of beauty there were.... Grateful Dead Lakeland Civic Center Lakeland, FL 11/28/80 - Friday Set Two Feel Like A Stranger % To Lay Me Down > Let It Grow > Terrapin Station > Drums > Space > Not Fade Away > Black Peter > Sugar Magnolia % Encore U.S. Blues ; You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod011813.mp3 Thank you my friends for listening and for your support...

I've been wanting to play something from this time period for some time, and while I previously presented part of a show from a couple nights later, this recording captures quite well the bands' energy and talents during the tour from the late Fall of 1980. We'll listen to the first set this week, which features a really fine 'Little Red Rooster' as well as a superb version of 'Looks Like Rain'. The set closing 'Deal' is raging... I hope you enjoy this as much as I do, we'll listen to set 2 next week... Happy Holidays! On this Winter Solstice I bring you this the 2012 Holiday edition of the Deadpod. As is our tradition this week's Deadpod features acoustic Grateful Dead for your enjoyment. I decided to make this year's Holiday Deadpod both very classic and a bit different... First the classic - how about the very first acoustic set from the famous Fall of 1980 shows at the Warfield in San Francisco? We have the entire acoustic set from this famous show from September 25th, 1980 as well as several songs from the next evening as well.. There is really nothing better to unwind to than these classic acoustic numbers done as only Jerry Garcia and the band can do.. Grateful Dead 9/25/80 - Thursday Warfield Theatre - San Francisco, CA One: Bird Song I've Been All Around This World Dark Hollow Rosalie McFall Monkey And The Engineer It Must Have Been The Roses Jack-A-Roe Oh Babe It Ain't No Lie > Ripple 9/26/80 - Friday Warfield Theater - San Francisco CA To Lay Me Down Cassidy China Doll For the less traditional - I recently got ahold of this Jerry Moore tape of Bob Weir and friends - a show that took place back on May 29th, 1986 in New York City. I really enjoyed hearing Bob's acoustic versions of these songs and decided to include them in part 2 of this year's holiday Deadpod.. I hope you enjoy them as well.. I am blessed to have so many kind friends who enjoy the music as much as I do and I so want you to know how thankful I am for the chance to produce this show each week. I find in these sad times that this music gives me strength and hope, the light it brings me I can't find just anywhere else.. I hope it gives you all peace and joy as well... thank you my friends.. Happy Hanukkah - Merry Christmas - and a warm Winter Solstice to all of you!

This week another fabulous version of Playing In the Band from 1972... this one is a real monster - Phil and Jerry trade some really intense leads and while this is not the only reason to listen to this set (recently re-mastered by Charlie Miller) its probably the highlight.. I think its certainly worthy of a listen and hope you do as well! This week it's set 2 of 12/5/71 .. sure this one is not as crispy as many boards from this era, but this is such a fine, energetic performance that in my opinion it makes up for all the flaws in the recording.. Listen to the wonderful transitions from Dark Star into Me & My Uncle back into Dark Star and then into Sittin' On Top of the World... these are truly exquisite. This is a fine example of relatively early Grateful Dead.. I'm also a huge fan of the closing NFA->Goin' Down the Road->NFA.. and even in 71, when they do a Johnny B Goode encore, you know the boys were having a good time! Grateful Dead 12/5/71 - Sunday Felt Forum - Madison Square Garden - New York, NY Set Two: Truckin' Ramble On Rose It Hurts Me Too Sugaree Sugar Magnolia Dark Star > Me And My Uncle > Dark Star > Sittin' On Top Of The World Me And Bobby McGee Big Railroad Blues Mexicali Blues > You Win Again Not Fade Away > Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad > Not Fade Away ; E: Johnny B. Dead Show/podcast for 11/30/12

This week's Deadpod features a great show that I've meant to play for some time - the Grateful Dead's performance on December 5th, 1971 at the Felt Forum, Madison Square Garden, New York City, New York. This comes to us from a pre-fm soundboard, but the sound is a bit iffy at times and sounds a bit 'condensed'.. nevertheless the performance is really alive and Jerry is zinging with energy. The set features a wonderful Brown-Eyed Women, the only performance of 'I Washed My Hands in Muddy Water', as well as a simply fine Tennessee Jed and Comes a Time... We'll hear the second set next week but everything, from the great Bill Graham introductions of the band members (if rock and roll had a Godfather.....").. to the set closing Saturday Night is spot on and shows us the band in their full youthful glory.. Grateful Dead Date: 12/5/71 - Sunday Location: Felt Forum - Madison Square Garden - New York, NY One: Bertha Beat It On Down The Line Big Boss Man Brown Eyed Women I Washed My Hands In Muddy Water Jack Straw Mr. Charlie Tennessee Jed El Paso Deal Playing In The Band Next Time You See Me Comes A Time Casey Jones > One More Saturday Night You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod113012.mp3 I hope that as we watch November, and indeed all of 2012 go slowly behind us, that you are all well and happy.. Dead Show/;podcast for 11/23/12

This week's Deadpod features a wonderful show from 1969 - this one from December 19th, 1969 at the Fillmore in San Francisco CA. This show starts off with a rare acoustic 'set' of sorts with just Jerry and Bob, due, we hear, to Phil being late to arrive. His tardiness gives a nice treat - the first four songs are a great treat to hear, Once everyone is back in the fold, the band moves effortlessly into a great electric set, which I decided to bring to you in its entirety. To me, its a great treat to listen to listen to the boys on songs like "Mason's Children' and 'Cumberland Blues'. As with most great '69 shows Pigpen is in great form on Good Lovin' and a 30 minute long Lovelight to close out the show.. I hope you find this one a fine way to spend a couple hours during this post-Thanksgiving weekend.. Grateful Dead 12/19/69 - Friday Fillmore Auditorium - San Francisco, CA Introduction The Monkey And The Engineer Little Sadie Long Black Limousine All Around This World Mason's Children Black Peter Hard To Handle Cumberland Blues ; Casey Jones Good Lovin' > Drums > Good Lovin' ; Cryptical Envelopment > Drums > The Other One > Cryptical Envelopment > Uncle John's Band > Turn On Your Lovelight You can listen to the Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod112312.mp3 My thanks to all of you for listening to and supporting the Deadpod.. Its a joy to know that so many fine folks are enjoying these tunes and I am so grateful to be allowed the privilege of sharing the tunes. PS - I know this wasn't a true 'acoustic' show - those are fairly rare and I've played quite a few of them already. I hope those of you who love the acoustic shows aren't too disappointed. I plan on more acoustic music for my annual Christmas show...

Dead Show/podcast for 11/16/12

This week we will finish the Dead's 9/29/89 concert at Shoreline Ampitheater. As you can see below this is a fine second set. As a Terrapin fan, I would've been pretty darn happy with everything up through drums, and content when Bob broke out the Miracle that I'd gotten a full measure of the price of admission.. however that's when they broke out 'Death Don't Have No Mercy...' this was the first time since 1970 that this classic had been played. It always brings chills to my neck to hear Garcia and Weir sing this..and they'd only play it three more times........ This is a fine concert all around but that is what makes it special for me.. I do hope you enjoy this week's Deadpod........ Dead Show/podcast for 11/9/12

This week's show was the result of a request made over on the Deadpod's facebook page for a great version of Brent doing 'We Can Run'.. While this may not be the very best version of that song its plenty good.. and it is a part of a pretty good show from a great Fall tour. Highlights for me on this first set include the off-tempo Franklin's Tower, and a great Bird Song and Promised Land.. Set 2 follows next week, with a foreshadowing of the Hampton shows that came later in this tour.. Dead Show/podcast for 11/2/12

This week we get to listen to the second set from a nice performance from the fall of 1972 - 10/28/72 Cleveland Ohio.. The Dark Star is clearly the crown jewel of this performance and I encourage you to read the description of that piece given by Robert Goetz in the Grateful Dead Tapers Compendium. It is far from the only thing worthwhile in the set to be sure. While some of the sound is not pristine (my apologies for that), still I really enjoyed the rest of the set, especially the Attics.. and hope you do as well. The Dark Star should be *studied* :) Grateful Dead Cleveland Public Hall 10/28/72 - Saturday Set Two: He's Gone El Paso Don't Ease Me In Greatest Story Ever Told Brown Eyed Women Beat It On Down The Line Attics Of My Life Big River Dark Star > Sugar Magnolia Casey Jones E: Johnny B. Dead Show/podcast for 10/26/12

I know that I may have featured too many shows this year from 1972 (is that possible?) but being that its the 40th anniversary of these shows I'm naturally led to take a look at them and often I'm drawn by their quality. 1972 was a wonderful year.. this week I decided to feature this show from the weekend before Halloween due principle to the fact that I really really want to play the Dark Star from set 2.. sometimes this desire to feature a particular segment or song from a show might cause me to feature some music that might not quite measure up.. I suppose that is the completest in me that prefers to feature whole shows rather than 'parts'. This week I'm playing set 1 of this show despite some sound issues with the mix - the vocals are often too low in the mix. Nevertheless the playing is first rate, as is the typically superb song selection. I hope you'll overlook the issues with the mix as I do, in anticipation of the wonderful Dark Star that awaits next week - besides this is a first rate set... :) Grateful Dead Cleveland Public Hall 10/28/72 - Saturday SetOne: The Promised Land ; Friend Of The Devil ; Jack Straw ; China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider ; Mexicali Blues ; Box Of Rain ; Me And Bobby McGee ; Candyman ; Me And My Uncle ; Sugaree ; Playing In The Band ; I really hope that you enjoy this one, in my mind, (and I'm probably biased as I grew up near Cleveland) the band really played some fine music here... You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod102612.mp3 thank you so much for your support of the Deadpod.. I really couldn't do the show without you!!!

Dead Show/podcast for 10/12/12

This is a fine second set from the Fall of 1976 - enjoy this one along with the fine Fall weather.. I especially recommend that you savor the wonderful Slipknot.. as well as the Franklin's Tower that follows.. this is really an under appreciated gem. The Dancin'->Drums->Wheel->Ship is not only unusual but very nicely done, especially the Ship of Fool.. this one makes a truly wierd but wonderful transition back into the Dancin' reprise.. There's no point in describing the GDTRFB.. listen to it.. You'll love the rockin' end to this show.. Dead Show/podcast for 10/5/12

Fall of 1976 was an excellent period for the band and this week's show is a nod to the upcoming release of 'Dave's Picks' 4' as well as a great representation of this tour, as we travel to Indianapolis for a show that took place on October 1st, 1976. We will hear the first set this week, and while it does take a song or two for the band to really rev up, I think by the time Deal arrives we know we're in for a good show. My personal highlights include the Brown Eyed women and of course, the rare first-set Scarlet Begonias. This is a really interesting time for the group as they are moving from the slower more jazzy improvisational pieces and developing the tighter rhythmic structures that we know and love in 1977. I hope you enjoy this week's Deadpod.. Dead Show/podcast for 9/28/12

This week's Deadpod allows us to enjoy the second set of the band's wonderful performance from Sept. 18th, 1987 at the Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York. If you caught the first set last week you know the band was firing on all cylinders here and they come out with a smokin' hot Shakedown Street, followed by a nice Man Smart, Woman Smarter, then an excellent Terrapin Station.. not a bad part 1! They come out of space with a rollin' Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad, which flows into Bobby doing an early version of Watchtower. The Morning Dew that follows is for me the highlight of the show.. Jerry is ON IT.. and has everyone enthralled with this one.. Bobby follows with a nice Good Lovin' but Jerry is not through having fun and comes in with a couple verses of La Bamba! This is a real treat and we know Garcia is having a great time on this night.. Clearly this is one of the classic Dead performances and I can only wish I had been in attendance this night.. I hope you enjoy it.. 9/18/87 - Grateful Dead Madison Square Garden, New York, NY Set 2: Shakedown Street-> Man Smart, Woman Smarter-> Terrapin Station-> Drums-> Space-> GDTRFB-> All Along The Watchtower-> Morning Dew-> Good Lovin'-> La Bamba-> Good Lovin' E: Heaven's Door You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod092812.mp3 I could not bring the Deadpod to you each week without the kind support of my listeners. thank you so much! Dead Show/podcast for 9/21/12

This week marks the 25th anniversary of the show I selected to play this week, and it clearly is one of the better later-day Dead shows. This comes to us from September 18th, 1987 at Madison Square Garden New York. It starts out with Weir refering to their appearance on Letterman the night before and then kicks into a great Hell In a Bucket... The Sugaree that follows is no slouch.. This first set also has a wonderful version of Candyman and When I Paint My Masterpiece. Its a short but solid set one that ends with a very nice Birdsong.. We'll listen to set 2 next week, which has some real meat to its bones, but I thought I'd close out this week's Deadpod with a cut from the newly released 'Spring 1990: So Glad You Made It' set with the Blow Away from the Cap Center in Landover MD, March 16th, 1990. If you're a fan of Brent's you'll enjoy hearing this one.. 9/18/87 - Grateful DeadMadison Square Garden, New York, NYSet 1:Hell In A Bucket > Sugaree > Walkin' Blues ; Candyman ; When I Paint My Masterpiece ; Bird Song ; from Spring 1990, So Glad You Made ItBlow Away Cap Center Landover MD 3/16/90You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod092112.mp3 Thank you so kindly for your support of the Deadpod, I could not bring this to you each week without it!

Dead Show/podcast for 9/14/12

This week's Deadpod features the 2nd set from the performance that took place on September 11th, 1990 at the Spectrum in Philladelphia PA. This was the first performance of "He's Gone" since Brent had passed, and I really feel that the emotion for both band and audience alike comes through on the music. The 'Spoonful' that follows surely was a deliberate pick and is also fairly heavy with emotion.. an interesting and unique jam follows.. after Drumz, the highlights for me are a well performed 'Black Peter' and the encore, which was 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door'.. While this show may not be of the caliber of some of the MSG shows that followed, I think it was clearly the best show the band played prior to the arrival of Bruce Hornsby later in the month.. One word of warning, this version of the show contains two different sources, an audience and the soundboard. The audience provides the source for songs and passages missing on the soundboard tape.. still I thought it was quite worth the listen, and hope you do as well. There's of course quite a lot of interest in the Grateful Dead's 1990 catalog right now with the release of the Spring 90 box set. As I reflected upon that year, and on this month, I was led to choose this show for the next Deadpod. I've always loved this performance. It took place when I was still saddened by the loss of Brent Mydland and fearful for what would happen to the band, and it reaffirmed for me the power and sway of this music in a way words won't do justice. We'll listen to the second set next week which I find especially moving.. but this is a fine first set and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. This week we have the opportunity to experience the 2nd and 3rd sets from the legendary Field Trip which took place on August 27th, 1972 in Veneta Oregon. While I inadvertently omitted the opening Playin' In the Band from last week's Deadpod - it starts us off this week as we strap in and prepare for flight! And what a ride this one is.. this is a show you should simply experience for yourself - music that is not only pleasurable but transformational. Don't overlook songs like 'Jack Straw' - you might be surprised there. The Bird Song has been called the greatest ever as has the Dark Star.. Personally I've always felt that the emotional catharsis that comes with 'Sing Me Back Home' to be moving and inspirational. My words won't and can't do this performance justice. Savor this and see if you don't also feel it is music for the ages. Dead Show/podcast for 8/24/12

This weekend marks the 40th anniversary of what some call the greatest single Grateful Dead show ever. While I might not go that far, it certainly was a remarkable occasion and one well worth reliving. While the band is firing on all cylinders as was often the case during this remarkable year, its clear that there is something special in the water this day. The 'Field Trip' as its been known is a very special afternoon and evening of remarkable improvisational psychedelic music. During this week's first set, listen as the band weaves its way from some wonderful but fairly standard versions of first set tunes until the upshift into a fantastic China Cat Sunflower.. the transition into I Know You Rider lets us know the band has stepped it up and is taking us on a special voyage. The frantic pace of the last two songs, Mexicalli and Bertha, ends set 1 and we're left wondering what will come next. I've included the first song from the remarkable second set, Playing In The Band. Truly a remarkable version, it sets the audience up for an extraordinary shared experience in set 2, which we'll hear next week. Dead Show/podcast for 8/17/12

This week, the heart of set 2 from the classic Red Rocks show performed on July 8th, 1978. There's no filler here, folks, just prime cut Dead. Dead Show/podcast for 8/10/12

Here's a really fabulous show from the summer of 1978.. from a listener request, one of two *great* shows at Red Rocks that ended Summer tour that year, I picked this one mainly because the tape is of such fine quality. The boys are very energetic, you can just hear in their voices how much fun they are having. Another thing to notice is how up in the mix Bobby is here - you can really hear his distinctive sound and what he adds to the mix. This El Paso is one of my favorites! Settle back and enjoy the sounds of a summer show too long ago, but luckily still here for us to enjoy and savor! Here we are again - another year rolls by - I'm thankful we have so much of Jerry's music and spirit to move us. I decided to play this one for you this week - I was turned on to this version by a good friend of the Deadpod - its been called the last great Grateful Dead show. That's hyperbole I'm sure but I played it for the Stella Blue... its not the Stella Blue I listened to this week when I sat in the Grateful Dead movie.. here is Garcia 20 more years down the line.. 20 years of experience, wear and tear certainly, soulfulness to be sure. As always the song speaks to my soul in ways only his playing and singing can do. The rest of this set is pretty darn good too.. I hope you enjoy it and smile.. Dead Show/podcast for 7/13/12

This week I decided to play a show that I have some fond memories of - July 6th, 1990 at Cardinal Stadium in Louisville KY. I have vivid memories of the trip to this show (following the blistering 4th of July show in Kansas) as well as walking through this group of fundamentalists on my way to the venue (they were all carrying brooms and Bibles to sweep out Satan I guess).. the weather was HOT and they cut off beer sales right when the boys went on stage.. but still a great night of music.. The first set has a wonderful Sugaree .. although really all of these 1st set songs are well played.. Its just a fine show from a great tour - the Summer of 1990. Our post-July4th Deadpod features the second set from the band's performance at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs NY during the Summer tour of 1985. This second set starts out with an interesting Stranger->Eyes->GDTRFB combo.. which is very tasty.. personally I enjoy the Black Peter (not everyone's cup of tea) and the Lovelight.. the JBG encore is far from the best, but Jerry follows it up with a very nice Baby Blue to send the crowd out happy.. Ahhh... summer's here for sure and as we head out of June and on to the 4th of July my mind couldn't help but be led back to that one-of-a-kind summer tour of 1985.. this week we'll sample one of those shows from that tour, this one from Saratoga Springs, NY, that took place on June 27th, 1985. As always on this tour a very innovative setlist, highlighted for me with a *great* Stagger Lee (not a tune I would often enjoy), a first set Crazy Fingers(!)into Supplication, High TIme (we have been hearing alot of these on the Deadpod lately haven't we?) and a nicely done Hell in a Bucket. It's a fun show, and I hope you enjoy it my friends.. set 2 next week.. 6/27/85 - Grateful Dead Saratoga Performing Arts Center Set 1:TuningIn The Midnight Hour ->Bertha ->Little Red Rooster"Get Down From The Balcony"Stagger Lee ->El Paso ->Crazy Fingers -> Supplication -> High TimeHell In A Bucket -> Don't Ease Me In You can listen to this week's Deadpod herehttp://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod062912.mp3">here>:http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod062912.mp3 http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod062912.mp3">http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod062912.mp3 > thank you so much for your kind support of the Deadpod.. My mind was moved to her yesterday when someone asked my favorite "Summertime" songs - of course I thought of the one and only Janis. I get requests for this show from time to time, I did broadcast part of this back in April of '06 but that Deadpod no longer exists on the archive, so I felt it was high time to bring it out again. Pigpen and Janis on Lovelight would be enough, but there are some other killer songs on this tape - Attics for one.. Of course this is surely not the entire show, and it does cut in on the China Cat.. still listen to Jerry and Bob on Not Fade Away, and that sublime Uncle John's to end this..... and think back to a summer long ago when the world was young...... This week's second set from June 14th, 1976 is in my opinion, simply outstanding. The songs are all strong and well played. Great set list, the High Time and Music Never Stopped are very good, but from Crazy Fingers on its flat-out cranked. Dancin' is wonderful, but the 14 minute Slipknot is spine tingling. A nice contrast to last week's show from '77, this show comes to us from just one year earlier, June 14th, 1976 at the Beacon in New York. A very different, more jazzy and relaxed style for sure... but I find it quite enjoyable. This one is a Betty board too so that is always very nice to hear. I removed a few of the long tunings between songs - they were sometimes a bit too relaxed ;)My personal favorites in this first set are the (new) Lazy Lightning->Supplication as well as the very nice Playin' In The Band.. A perfect way to see in the lovely month of June, this week's second set from the Baltimore Civic Arena, May 26th, 1977, is as fine a set of Grateful Dead music as one could hope to hear. Perhaps not an alltime 'classic' but certainly a wonderful companion to any worth while activity you could hope to accomplish in this wonderful season. This set features a lovely 'High Time' - one of my favorites, as well as a Terrapin->Estimated->Eyes combo that is played wonderfully. Not Fade Away is often taken for granted..I recommend you listen to this one, and harken back, if you were so lucky to the times you were able to watch them standing in those circles of light serenading us with this wonderful rocker... The Uncle John's Band encore is of course, just exactly perfect. I trust you use this good music as a salve for your heart.. it does mine good. I know my prejudices are fairly obvious - do I love 1977 Dead shows? Guilty.. I can't seem to go through the month of May without featuring one of these gems and I decided I didn't want to spoil that record this year.. thus this week's show. This is a gem, pure and simple. Beautiful recording, beautiful playing. Check out Jerry on Sugaree, and Donna on Sunrise. Passenger, one of my favorites of this era is a swirling whirlwind of color and sound.. This week we get to listen to set 2 of the Dead's show in the Vegas desert from May 16th, 1993. All in all, a pretty darn good set, the Help->Slip->Frank features some nice improvisations by Vince. I'm a fan of Terrapin and this one does not disappoint, Jerry is in it.. The Other One and Wharf Rat are first rate, and the Throwin Stones goes into a Lovelight instead of the increasingly usual Not Fade Away.. Brokedown is always a nice way to leave a show.. This week's show, a listener request, was probably the best of the three day run in Vegas during May of '93. Garcia is fully involved and his work during Althea steps up this first set to be top rate. I really enjoy the reggae-like work on Row Jimmy as well. Cassidy is very well done and closes the set. Regrettably its a very short first set so I included the opening Samson from set 2 in this week's show. I'll play the rest of set 2, in pure soundboard form, next week. This week - the 2nd set of this incredible show from 1974 - 5/19/74 from Portland Oregon. There are so many highlights here its impossible to list them all, The Greatest Story is one of the all-time bests, ditto for the Weather Report into a wondefully Garica-jammed Wharf Rat. The Peggy-O is beautiful.. but the Phil-led Truckin' through Goin' Down the Road Feelin'Bad is simply magnificant. I love love love the mind left body jam.. Dead Show/podcast for 4/27/12

This week's Deadpod came about, as they often do, due to several synchronistic events, a listener request, the immanent release of Dave's Picks Vol 2, and of course my own partiality for shows of this era. This week's show comes from the City of Roses, Portland Oregon and took place on May 19th, 1974. One of the early wall of sound shows, I think this is a wonderful representation of the band at this time of their history. This first set features some great Garcia riffs on these first set classic songs, as well as a very rare 'Money Money' (one of only three times they played the tune. The highlight for me of this set comes with the closing China->Rider. Listen to Kreutzmann's drumming especially on this transition.. its really wonderful. Dead Show/podcast for 4/20/12

This week I reached back to find a show befitting the 4/20 occasion and decided that despite its flaws only April 20th, 1969 would do. This one has been on the request list for some time, but it is a gas. This is of course a great example of 'good ol' Grateful Dead' with Pigpen featured prominently on Good Morning Little Schoolgirl and Lovelight, but it also includes a mind-bending Dark Star, a wonderful St. Stephen and a pair of wonderful encores - Dupree's Diamond Blues and Mountains of the Moon... not to mention the always powerful 'Death Don't Have No Mercy'.. Granted the recording suffers from some hiss in spots and doesn't have quite the headroom I would like, but if you let yerself explore where this wild band of outlaws takes you on this evening 43 years ago I'm sure you'll smile............. Dead Show/podcast for 4/19/13

"Spring hasn't sprung, until the Dead play the Frost" or so goes the saying I used to hear.. and in an attempt to conjure up a more lasting Spring I decided to bring one of their magical concerts from this classic venue to our Deadpod this week. This concert comes from the Spring of 1985, surely a year that doesn't always get much respect, but nonetheless the place for some amazing shows back in the day, and I think you'll agree that this particular event was one of those.. The famous bass line welcomes us to a wonderful Dancin' and we know we're on our way to a fabulous time with the boys. Bertha doesn't give anyone a chance to sit down as Jerry rocks it at a breakneck pace.. a lazy Little Red Rooster follows.. but don't despair.. a great Brown Eyed Women is up next followed by 'My Brother Esau'.. every time I hear that song I'm reminded of a show I saw back in the early 90s where someone just kept yelling .... "Bobby.. are you still boxing with the apocalypse?" Ramble on Rose is a keeper I think.. well played and Jerry sounds into it and it has that unique 'electic dixieland' sound as David Crosby so well described it.. It is also wonderful that Jerry is in full and fine voice here and throughout this show.. Phil's 'Tom Thumb' is pleasant and goes into a very fine Cold Rain and Snow.. The set ends with a well developed Music Never Stopped.. the jaming hints at whats coming next week in set 2.. This week's Deadpod features the second set from the band's performance on April 21st, 1978 at Rupp Arena on the University of Kentucky campus in Lexington, Kentucky. While the reports I've read on this show indicate that it was not nearly full, the band puts out a top-notch effort and delivers a fun and well-played second set. Highlights for me include the outstanding Stella Blue (this is the version included on 'So Many Roads', the 'Staying Alive' jam out of drums, the Playin' in the Band (and the reprise) and of course, Werewolves of London.. As I listened again to last week's 'pod I decided that it was time to change things up for this week - (frankly I was less happy with the audio quality on that show than I wanted to be) so I'm bringing you a show with a nod to the University of Kentucky -this year's Men's NCAA Basketball Champions. This show took place back in the spring of 1978 - on April 21st, 1978. I think its strong throughout - aside from the loss of a bit of Dire Wolf - and of excellent sonic quality. Jerry is on his game this night and I am sure that this set will put a smile on your face. There were quite a few outstanding shows that took place in early Spring throughout the history of the GD, so picking one for this week's show wasn't that easy. I think this is however a good show from an outstanding tour, Spring of 1987. The band roars out of the gate on Jack Straw, then goes into an outstanding Franklin's Tower, in honor of Philadelphia I presume.. The first set is full of sparkling playing and high energy. I'm personally fond of the Candyman, however, in the more soulful vein..I'm even willing to give them a pass on the perfunctory 'Don't Ease' which closes the set... the second set next week is very good as well.. The sound quality is not pristine but quite listenable, I think. I hope you enjoy it, and that your Spring is busting out all over too. 3/31/87 - Grateful Dead The Spectrum - Philadelphia, PA Set One:Jack Straw ->Franklin's Tower C C RiderRamble On RoseTons Of SteelMama Tried ->Big RiverCandymanDesolation Row ->Don't Ease Me In You can listen to this week's Deadpod herehttp://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod033012.mp3">here>:http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod033012.mp3">http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod033012.mp3">http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod033012.mp3 The Deadpod exists only through your support.. thank you my friends..... The Man Smart, Woman Smarter that follows has a unique sound as does the sweet jam leading into Space.. I'm not as big a fan of the intro into 'The Other One' this time.. Some folks dislike the Stella Blue that follows - its just too slow for some peoples' tastes. I'll let you judge that for yourself. I think this is a fine show that is representative of a fine period of the GD history. I hope you enjoy it as well.. Dead Show/podcast for 3/9/12

March winds will blow.. all my troubles away..... Well I can hope right? I thought for this March Deadpod that I'd bring you a show from the Spring of 1990, this one occurred the day following the show released as "Terrapin Station' .. on March 16th, 1990. I think this is quite an interested show as well and well worth a listen. Of particular interest in this first set is the first performance of 'Black Throated Wind' since October 19th, 1974.. with some alternate lyrics to boot.. (I've posted these alternative lyrics below).. I think the band was on a roll during this tour and personally I enjoy their sound.. I hope you do as well! Grateful Dead 3/16/90 - Friday Capital Centre - Landover , MD Set One: Good Times ; Touch Of Grey ; New Minglewood Blues ; Peggy-O ; Queen Jane Approximately ; Loser ; Black Throated Wind ; Bird Song ; Blow Away ; You can listen to this week's Deadpod herehttp://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod030912.mp3">here>:http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod030912.mp3">http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod030912.mp3">http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod030912.mp3 Thanks to everyone who has supported the Deadpod! Here are the alternate Black Throated Wind lyrics, used briefly in 1990: Verse 2Well, it's me and the road, yeah, we're lacking the codeThat will lead us to some as yet unforseen barAlone with the rush of the drivers who won't pick me upThe highway, the moon, the clouds and the stars But I'm here by the road, yeah, unravelling the codeThat will lead us to some as yet unforseen bar Verse 3The black-throated wind keeps on pouring inLike a siren it promises everything newAh, Mother American Night, invisible lightOhhh, I'm flying in you The black-throated wind keeps on pouring inWith its words of a life where everything's new Verse 4I left St Louis, the City of BluesOn a screaming blue bender I'd rather forgetWith no scars that show, the keys to the roadA couple of tens and some stale cigarettes Verse 5But I can't deny that times have gone byNothing is left but thoughts of regretWhen I was a man, with so much in handThat a bird in the bush would be singing there yet But I can't deny that times have gone byWhen being with her was as good as it gets Verse 6The black-throated wind, whispering sinAnd speaking of life that passes like dewIt's led me to see if you want to be freeHave your way with each day as its granted to you Verse 7What's to be found, racing aroundYou carry your blues to the edge of the skyThink a coyote could care about birds in the air?Think a raven thinks coyotes should learn how to fly? We drew lines all around us when I was downSo now mine turns out to go right to the sky Verse 8So I give you my eyes, they were just a disguiseAnyway where I'm going it's too dark to seeYes, and toss me to Chance and watch me danceChoreography certain as bats on the breeze So I leave you my eyes ... Verse 9The black-throated wind keeps on pouring inWith it's words of a lie I think just might be trueOh, Mother American Night, here comes the lightI'm going right on ahead, that's what I'm gonna do The black-throated wind keeps on pouring inThe prophet that promises everything newAh, Mother American Night, come wrong or come rightI will always go onward in you

Dead Show/podcast for 3/2/12

This week's featured show on the Deadpod comes from a request from one of my listeners who has recently been digging on shows from 1970 - a truly great year - I only wish there were more recordings of the band from this year. This week's comes from February 23rd in Austin Texas. While this is obviously not a complete show, it still provides so much high energy Dead that I'm sure you'll enjoy it. For me beyond the obvious pleasures of the acoustic 'set' is the wonderful Not Fade Away which is topnotch. Grateful DeadThe Auditorium, Austin TX02/23/70 Electric SET101. Laissez les bon temps rouler! OK, I'm a few days late: ) still the Mardi Gras run is a great occasion to commemorate and the Dead did it up right many years - this one I think was one of those.. this week we have the second set from February 11th, 1986 with the Neville Brothers. It starts with a nice jamming drums into a groovy Iko.. the Eyes that follows won't make anyone's top 10 list, but the drums and space are jamming! For me the jamming is the highlight of this set, along with Jerry's rockin' out on the encore as he goes into 'Hey Bo Diddley!'... classic.. Hope you enjoy this one and that the end of February finds you well and warm with Spring right around the corner... ;) Grateful Dead - February 11, 1986Henry J. Hard to believe but it almost LENT already! And that of course means its Mardi Gras time! This next show up on our plate is from Mardi Gras 1986 - a request from a great friend of the Deadpod - from February 11th, 1986. This is one of those great Oakland Mardi Gras runs where the Neville Brothers opened for the boys (and we'll hear them on the second set next week). This week's first set, although ragged at times, and with Jerry's voice not exactly perfect, is still marked by alot of enthusiasm and good vibes. My favorites from this first set include a raging Minglewood, and a nice set closing Bird Song->Music Never Stopped->Might As Well.. next week in honor of Fat Tuesday a great Iko :) Grateful Dead - February 11, 1986Henry J. Inspired - that's the word that comes to mind when I think of this performance.. this is a wonderful piece of work - surely one of the better shows of 1976, and this nearly 2 hour second set features some real gems. Lazy Lightin'>Supplication>Let It Grow.. the slow and beautiful St. Stephen, and the Stella Blue, of course.. oh that Stella Blue.. the end of which will surely melt your heart. This week's Deadpod comes from another great request - this for a show that while widely traded back in the day, often had less than stellar sound. I think this copy is quite good however and am happy to be able to share with you this fantastic show from 1976. Both sets are very well played, and I enjoy the sound of Phil throughout.. Jerry's vocals are also spot on, especially in the second set as you'll see next week. Originally broadcast on KSAN, but this remix really moderates most of the disagreeable aspects of earlier versions. Hope you enjoy it.. Dead Show/podcast for 1/27/12

I've had the jones for some early mindbending Dead for awhile.. I finally decided this week was as good a time as any to feed it.. This week's Deadpod features fragments from two shows that took place 43 years ago, February 2nd and 3rd at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland OR. It's great to hear Tom Constantin on these tapes, I especially enjoy him on the Clementine from the 2nd.. that show on the 2nd also features the last time Bobby used these early lyrics: "When I woke up this morning, my head was not in sight I would ask the walls about it, but they vanished overnight I could not think or spell my name, or fly there was no way and the heat came round and busted me for smiling on a cloudy day"The 2/3 show was supposedly one of the shows used in producing 'Anthem of the Sun'.. This features a rare 'Born Cross Eyed' and a great 'Eleven'.. Hope you lose yourself in it.. :) Grateful Dead - February 2, 1968Crystal Ballroom - Portland, OR Viola Lee Blues That's It For The Other One -> Clementine -> Good Morning Little Schoolgirl// Grateful Dead - February 3, 1968Crystal Ballroom - Portland, OR That's It For The Other One ->New Potato CabooseIt Hurts Me TooBorn Cross-EyedGood Morning Little SchoolgirlDark Star ->China Cat Sunflower ->The Eleven You can listen to this week's Deadpod herehttp://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012712.mp3">here>:http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012712.mp3">http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012712.mp3">http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012712.mp3 My thanks as always to our friends at Keeley Electronics!
