Dead Show/podcast for 1/27/12

I've had the jones for some early mindbending Dead for awhile.. I finally decided this week was as good a time as any to feed it.. This week's Deadpod features fragments from two shows that took place 43 years ago, February 2nd and 3rd at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland OR. It's great to hear Tom Constantin on these tapes, I especially enjoy him on the Clementine from the 2nd.. that show on the 2nd also features the last time Bobby used these early lyrics: "When I woke up this morning, my head was not in sight I would ask the walls about it, but they vanished overnight I could not think or spell my name, or fly there was no way and the heat came round and busted me for smiling on a cloudy day"The 2/3 show was supposedly one of the shows used in producing 'Anthem of the Sun'.. This features a rare 'Born Cross Eyed' and a great 'Eleven'.. Hope you lose yourself in it.. :) Grateful Dead - February 2, 1968Crystal Ballroom - Portland, OR Viola Lee Blues That's It For The Other One -> Clementine -> Good Morning Little Schoolgirl// Grateful Dead - February 3, 1968Crystal Ballroom - Portland, OR That's It For The Other One ->New Potato CabooseIt Hurts Me TooBorn Cross-EyedGood Morning Little SchoolgirlDark Star ->China Cat Sunflower ->The Eleven You can listen to this week's Deadpod herehttp://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012712.mp3">here>:http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012712.mp3">http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012712.mp3">http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012712.mp3 My thanks as always to our friends at Keeley Electronics! Dead show/podcast for 1/25/13

All the publicity this week about the release of Dave's Pick's Vol 5. gave me a good excuse to bring out another 1973 gem to play on the Deadpod.. This week's show took place about a month after the 11/17/73 show featured on Dave's Picks - this one is from 12/18/73 at the Curtis Hixon Convention Hall in Tampa FL. - yes the night before the show featured on Dick's Picks Vol 1! I know - finding these beauties that haven't been released is getting harder -but this is a wonderful show and I am sure that those of us who enjoy this stellar period in GD history will enjoy it. I'll play set 1 this week and follow it next week with set 2. This one features some fine renditions of classic tunes - the Tennessee Jed, Brown Eyed Women and Deal are wonderful.. and don't dare miss the China->Rider - that transition is GREAT! ..... and yes its simply a coincidence that i'm playing florida shows in the DEAD of winter :) Curtis Hixon Convention Hall, Tampa, FL (12/18/73) Tennessee Jed Me and My Uncle Don't Ease Me In Looks Like Rain They Love Each Other Me and Bobby McGee Brown Eyed Women Beat it on Down the Line Peggy-O El Paso Deal Jack Straw China Cat Sunflower I Know You Rider You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod012513.mp3 Thank you so much for listening and for your support... Dead Show/podcast for 1/13/12

This week's second set from May 26th, 1993 features believe it or not probably the finest version of Playin' in the late 90s era. This is a real scorcher and the drums in the middle of the sandwich is very tasty as well.. Crazy Fingers is also quite nice and I'm a fan of almost any China Dolls... I hope you'll give this one a listen I am sure you won't regret it.. Of course I don't know how it has been where you are... but the winter up here in Michigan has been pretty mild so far (now I've jinked myself :) Still.. I didn't think a little pick-me-up would be a bad idea.. this show is a request from one of my listeners and I thought a little Springtime Dead would be just the thing for the after-holidays blues.. Hope you enjoy this one.. I'm always a fan of 'Here Comes Sunshine' and actually have enjoyed Phil's renditions of 'Broken Arrow'.. I hope you enjoy this one as well.. next week's 2nd set features a wonderful Playin'.. This week's second set from December 6th, 1981 - I think any set with 'To Lay Me Down' in it is probably worth the trouble to listen to, and I think this one is quite nice, classic 81 Dead. I love the effects during space also.. (40 years after the attack on Pearl Harbor?..).Hope you enjoy this one too, thank you so much for your support. This week's Deadpod comes from a show that took place almost exactly 30 years ago - back on December 6th, 1981 once again at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago Illinois. This is a very well played show, and I really think you'll enjoy the Sugaree as well as the Look Likes Rain, among others.. This was a really nice tour for the band, and they are firing together on all cylanders.. I hope you enjoy it! Dead Show/podcast for 11/18/11

I'm afraid that when I think of an iconic year for Grateful Dead music in the month of November that 1973 always pops into my mind. This, combined with a long-time request for this show on my request list, led to this week's show. Yes, this is only a day before the show released as Road Trips vol 4 no. 3, and that release does contain a few songs from this set 2, nevertheless, this music is far too wonderful not to be heard and treasured. In this week of Thanksgiving I can think of no better way to be grateful than to celebrate a great show like this one.. I hope you enjoy it as well my friends.. Dead Show/podcast for 11/11/11

This week I'll make good on my promise to play the second set from the Dead's performance at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago Illinois on March 11th, 1993. If you're not familiar with the spoken word work of Ken Nordine you're in for a treat here as he recites two of his wonderful word poems, "Fliberty Jib" and "The Island".. the music is quite good also.. I won't say much about 'Wave to the Wind' - I always thought it dreadful, but aside from that its a very good second set, especially from The Other One on, through 'Days Between' with a nice Liberty encore.. I think you'll enjoy it.. Sometimes we all need to be flexible, right? Well this week I hope you'll forgive a change of plans. I'm going to push back the second set of 3/11/93 for a week to bring you a show that was played 26 years ago on November 5th, 1985 at The Centrum in Worcester, MA. The entire first week of November 85 was marked by a number of wonderful shows and this one is no exception. I decided to bring you the *entire* show this week -in honor of the birthday of a friend of the Deadpod and because I hadn't done that in awhile.. This show has a wicked Shakedown Street, as well as a fabulous closing from Black Peter right through Brokedown Palace. I hope you enjoy it.. and happy birthday David... Dead Show/podcast for 10/28/11

I've had a fair number of requests for 90's Dead shows recently, and this week's shows features one of the best shows that took place back in 1993. This one is a favorite not only because the second set features an appearance by Ken Nordine, but also because I really enjoy Jerry's playing and the rest of the band puts in a solid performance. This starts with a tight Help->Slip into a nice long Franklin's Tower. Althea is always a favorite, and the Masterpiece as well as So Many Roads is quite enjoyable. Grateful Dead 3/11/93 - Thursday Rosemont Horizon Arena - Rosemont, IL One:Help On The Way > Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower ; Little Red Rooster ; Althea ; When I Paint My Masterpiece ; So Many Roads > The Music Never Stopped ; You can listen to this week's Deadpod herehttp://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod102811.mp3">here>:http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod102811.mp3">http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod102811.mp3">http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod102811.mp3 Thanks for your kind Support of the Deadpod - it keeps us rolling!

Dead Show/podcast for 10/14/11

This week's Deadpod came as the result of two requests I received this week - its not unusual to get requests but it is to get two requests for the same show, both from brothers in Europe! Its a fine show, and even though I'd played a show from this year recently I think its worth hearing this one. Besides, something in the ether is wanting me to play this so here it is :) This comes to us from Wembley Arena in London England, from October 30th, 1990. This week's first set, features a nice start to the show, as well as a fine Valley Road by Hornsby to close the set. I hope you enjoy this one.. Dead Show/podcast for 10/7/11

This week's Deadpod takes us back to some early "primal" Dead, back to the Winterland Arena in the fall of 1967. While we don't have all of this show, I think you'll enjoy how tight and well played these songs are. The band is clearly listening to each other and hitting on all cylinders. Pay attention to the lyrics used here on "The Other One". This show's a blast.. afterwards, I've included a cut from the Europe 72 vol 2 CD, the fabulous "Sing Me Back Home" from the last show of the tour.. I'm supposed to be getting some more copies of this from Rhino and plan to offer up another contest for them, I just want to have them in hand before I start to promise anything.. hope you enjoy it!!! This week as we end the month of September, we get to listen to the 2nd set of a wonderful show from the seminal Madison Square Garden run that occurred back in the fall of 1990. This second set starts out with a tight and wonderful Eyes->Estimated->Foolish Heart. We then go into quite a nice drums->space, which takes us to a nice quiet place ripped open by Phil as the band turns into the Other One.. The Wheel and Sugar Magnolia end the set. Jerry's Knockin' on Heaven's Door ends the show as everyone thoughts turned to Brent.. Dead Show/podcast for 9/23/11

Well Fall has officially arrived, and this season inevitably brings to my mind the fond memories of one of the greatest later-era Grateful Dead runs - Madison Square Garden in the Fall of 1990. When the band arrived in New York the jury was still out on their future following the passing of Brent Mydland. By the time they left after these shows, they had a new member, and any questions were answered as to their desire and capability to keep producing great music. The show I'm featuring the next two weeks, from September 18th, 1990 is not the most famous of the run, but it is a very fine and enjoyable show. In this first set I have to point out the magnificant 'To Lay Me Down->Promised Land' closer... Enjoy and may the fall treat you gently, my friends. This week we get to hear the second set from the Parmount Theater in Seattle Washington, September 29th, 1977. I think this is quite a nice set with an outstanding He's Gone, Stella Blue and an Uncle John's Band encore to soothe your soul... I hope you enjoy it! In other news - the Europe 72 Vol. 2 CD contest is OVER! I received a goodly number of entries and I want to thank each of you for all the kind things you had to say! I'd love to respond to each of you but I probably don't have time so I hope you don't take offense - I also wish I had enough CDs for everyone but of course I don't. Dead Show/podcast for 9/9/11

This week on the Deadpod I decided to feature a show from the fall of '77.. probably not the time of that year that usually comes to mind but this show, in my opinion, deserves some recognition.. this was performed on September 29th in Seattle WA. Not only does this show exhibit its wonderful '77 pedigree, but the last three songs really ... rock.. out. In a sense this is a show that looks forward as well as back.. and showcases where the band is going and where it has been.. I find it quite enjoyable.. (be forwarned there is some music that has been lost here.. Mississippi Half Step and Deal both cut in.. ).. but the Franklins!! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do! On this holiday weekend I decided to bring you a complete show from one of my very favorite venues - the Starlight Theater in Kansas City, MO.. This show took place 26 years ago on September 3rd, 1985. While Jerry may not have been in the best of voice that summer, I do have to give the boys props for mixing up the setlists on that tour, and this is a great example of that. I hope you enjoy the show - for me the highlights are a wonderful Eyes of the World, and I suppose I've never heard a 'Comes A Time that didn't move me... High time for some classic '68 Dead.. this week's show contains a wonderful classic Dark Star from 1968.. its from 'Betty Nelson's Organic Raspberry Farm' in Sultan WA., and took place on September 2nd, 1968. While the tape does have its share of rough spots it really is a quite spectacular record of the band as it is nearing maturity.. the incredible Pigpen vocals on 'Alligator' are another highlight.. This week's Deadpod, by listener request, is a great sounding show from Eugene Oregon, home of many fine shows. This one comes from May 7th, 1984. This week we have a fine second set from July 29th, 1988 to entertain us as we reflect on how fortunate we were to have Jerry Garcia share his talents with us. This is a great example of a late 80s second set, with an unusual China Cat->Crazy Fingers->I Know You Rider to open the set. This is followed by a Playin' in the Band which really gets out there - Barlow remarked that this one would separate the true believers from those who weren't:) I also just love the rare but wonderful 'Believe It Or Not' a song that fits the ballad position perfect and was all too rare.. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do, and while its been 16 years since we lost Jerry what he left us to enjoy is such a treasure that I can only rejoice in his life.. thanks for sharing the ride. This week's Deadpod features a show that took place 23 years ago - July 29th, 1988 at the Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey CA. This first set is quite nice - and you'll hear Brent prominently throughout. I felt this was only appropriate given the anniversary of his passing this last week. I think you'll enjoy not only the Iko Iko and Blow Away but also the wonderful Althea and Deal.. We'll play set two next week... This is really premium, classic Grateful Dead. This second set from may in Montana rolls out from an unusual US Blues, El Paso opener into a nice Row Jimmy. The Weather Report Suite that follows is quite perfect and the transition into Dark Star is impeccable. Listen to how it flows into China Doll.. my words won't add to that experience.. enjoy it and feel it fill you. Not Fade Away->Goin' Down the Road is flat out rockin'. Here's a show that caught my eye this week from the Wall of Sound era - this one is from May 14th, 1974 in Missoula Mountana.. this is probably not the finest show of the era, but nevertheless there is plenty here to like. In this first set, the band really gets cranking on the Scarlet->Roses.. what a delicious segway.. The Tennessee Jed and Mexicalli Blues are equally inspring, and all in all this is a fine first set of classic Grateful Dead. Set 2 will follow next friday.. This week's Deadpod features the second set of the show that marked the introduction of Keith Godchaux to the Grateful Dead family. This is quite an interesting second set, and really shows the band in transition from its earlier sound to the sound that would characterize it throughout 1972. In particular listen to the sound on 'That's It for the Other One'.. it leads into a heart breakingly beautiful Wharf Rat.. This week the music world lost a true star - Clarence 'Big Man' Clemons.. Aside from his pivotal role in the E. Street Band Clarence was a friend of the Grateful Dead and played with Jerry Garcia as well. In honor of his passing, a listener of the Deadpod requested this show, and it is absolutely perfect to play this week. This was the longest segment Clarence played with the Grateful Dead and occurred on Dec. 6th, 1989 at the Earthquake Benefit that took place at the Oakland Coliseum. (This also happened to be the date of the 20th anniversary of the Altamont). I thought I would bring you the second set because that's where Clarence sat in with the band on the majority of the set .. I could be persuaded to play the first set next week.. I think you'll find this a great set.. I'm personally very fond of the Standing on the Moon, but I think Clarence adds some great licks on the Ship of Fools as well... 12/6/89 - Grateful DeadOakland Coliseum - Oakland, CAEarthquake Relief Benefit Set 2:Scarlet Begonias ->Sugar Magnolia ->Ship Of Fools* ->Terrapin Station ->Drums ->Space* ->The Wheel* ->All Along The Watchtower* ->Standing On The Moon* ->Sunshine Daydream*(Encore) Black Muddy River* * With Clarence Clemons

This week I decided to bring you a very fine show from the late period of the Grateful Dead. This one comes to us from March 21st, 1994 from the Richfield Coliseum in Richfield Ohio. I think the band usually played well here - and I think this is quite a fine show. I decided to bring you the second set - it is especially well played - right from the Picasso Moon, through the New Speedway and an excellent Victim.. The highlight of this set however is the Stella Blue - Jerry is so expressive on this one - it bring shivers to me when I listen.. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do, my friends. Another fine suggestion by a friend of the Deadpod sets the stage for this week's show - July 14th, 1984 from the Greek Theater in Berkeley CA. It seems to fit right in with the last few weeks' and the boys do not disappoint on this one.. From our correspondent's email: "The first set features really high energy versions of Jack Straw and Big Railroad Blues. I'm not normally a big fan of Little Red Rooster, but this is a truly great version" I can second that recommendation and hope you enjoy this set as much as I do.. Dead Show/podcast for 5/20/11

This week's show is the result of one of those wierd acts of synchronicity that led me to believe that it was meant to be... I had been thinking that it was about time to feature a show from 1985. I was thinking of which show to play and had seriously considered the show from Hershey PA on 6/28/85.. While this is a fun show, it has some problems - the weather was bad, the playing a bit sloppy even for 85 standards.. As I had pretty much concluded I wouldn't play this show I got a great email from a listener to the Deadpod who asked about the show that I am playing this week, from Merriweather Post Pavilion on 7/1/85. He told me about how much fun this show was and how he'd never really heard a great tape of it. While the tape I am playing tonight does suffer from a few anomalies, over all its a pretty good tape, and it captures a great time in GD history. This was the last time the band was able to play at this venue - the pressures and increasing popularity made it impossible. I think you'll enjoy this performance. The Dancin' opener is real fun, and the Dupree's is a highlight. Bobby does a fine job on the Let It Grow and admit it, its fun to hear Day Job once in awhile :) Next week we'll listen to the monster second set, but I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do.. Ah how I love the month of May! Spring has come late this year, but I still find this month to be the most delightful... and I can never help but feature one of the Grateful Dead's classic performances from this month back in 1977. Clearly one of the greatest periods in their live performance history, while this month is well-known and well-liked I still can't resist pulling out one of these classic shows to feature this week. I can't begin to say what particular performance was the best during this exceptional period, but the show I've chosen this time is no slouch. This week we'll listen to set 1 - which in my mind features one of the all time best Peggy O's you'll hear, as well as a tremendous performance by Garcia on the set closing, Music Never Stopped.. It needs no more superlatives the music will speak for itself, let it lighten your heart like the song of a spring bird... This week's second set from 1/15/79 is a really classic show for the end of the Keith and Donna era... It starts with an unusual but very successful sequeway - from the I Need A Miracle opener into Shakedown Street.. very powerful and it works seemlessly.. I'm also a fan of the Terrapin Station->Playin' In The Band combo that follows, as I really enjoy a powerful live Terrapin.. While this may be a short second set by some standards the band is clearly on during this show and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.. Frankly I equivocated a bit on this week's show.. the show itself was a wonderful request from one of our listener's for a show from a period in the band's history that was frankly uneven, at the end of the Keith and Donna era.. Not only would I call the period itself uneven, but this show as well, with the first set clearly not matching the luminescence of the second set. Be that as it may be, I decided to include the first set this week, partly due to the fact that I am a GD 'completest' as it were, and because its still some damm nice music. While it may be true that the band really revs it up in set 2, I think its worth hearing the entire show, and for support of that argument I point to the Jack Straw and Deal that we can enjoy in this week's first set.. I hope you enjoy, and thanks for listening! Grateful DeadJanuary 15, 1979Springfield Civic CenterSpringfield, MA Set 1:1. tuning2. Jack Straw3. Jack A Roe4. Cassidy5. Row Jimmy6. On the heels of an acclaimed tour of east and south, Furthur has just announced dates for their summer tour. It seemed to me to be only fitting to feature the band this week for those of you who may not have been fortunate enough to catch them so far this year, as well as those of you lucky enough to have seen them. This week I'm going to feature music from two of their recent shows, first from a show in Pittsburgh, then from Phil Lesh's birthday show in New York City. No April Fools here - just great Jerry! This week another great request from one of our listeners - this one for a great show from 1976 - this one comes from a venue we've featured before, but I went back and couldn't believe it had been so long since I'd played a show from 1976.. Anyway, its a good year - sometimes the tempo is a bit slower than other years, but the band is listening and growing and while the 2nd set of this show is probably more out-there than this first set, I think this is quite enjoyable- especially the wonderful Scarlet that closes set 1.. This was quite a week in the Dead community, some fine Furthur shows, Phil's 71st birthday, but overshadowing everything, for me, was the loss of Augustus Owsley Stanley. Owsley was of course instrumental in the formation and development of the Grateful Dead, of the 'big sound' that really defined the concert experience for the Dead, and of course, as a world renowned chemist. This week, thanks to the efforts of Jamie over at Lossless Legs, I'm playing one of Bear's recordings, from the famous Winterland run of October 74. Fare thee well, Bear - give Jerry our love... Dead Show/podcast for 2/25/11

Again, this week we have the pleasure of listening to truly classic Grateful Dead, this time the second set from February 18th, 1971 at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester N.Y. While this second set does not contain the transcendent beauty of the jam between Wharf Rat and the Dark Star reprise, it does contain the very first 'Playin' in the Band' as well as a superbly played Saint Stephen->Not Fade Away->Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad->Not Fade Away combo that really can't be beat.. Put this together with last week's pod for one of the greatest shows in the Dead genre.. Today is the 40th anniversary of this classic Grateful Dead show - just imagine that you were at this show. This show saw the first 'Bertha', the first 'Greatest Story Ever Told', the first 'Johnny B. Goode', the first 'Loser', the first 'Playin' in the Band' and the first 'Wharf Rat'!!!Not only did this show mark the debut of all these classic Dead shows but also one of the most beautiful, creative and spontaneous jams - the one from Wharf Rat into Dark Star... this one is well worth playing today especially in this newly released splendid soundboard.. Dead Show/podcast for 2/11/11

This week we'll hear set 2 of the Grateful Dead's performance on May 9th, 1987 at the Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey California. While I would agree that its not the most unique setlist, its still quite enjoyable - I'm especially fond of the He's Gone->Drumz->Space segment of this one, as well as the Iko encore.. I hope you enjoy it ... see you here next week!!
