I realize that I've been playing alot of early 70s Dead the last month or so and I plan on changing that up next week, but I just couldn't let that 1st set I played last week from 12/31/72 be orphaned - so I'm putting out the second set this week. Its distinguished not only for the fine ensemble playing characteristic of the time but by the presence of David Crosby on the 'Other One' and 'Morning Dew' - I think you'll be able to hear his playing.. I hope you enjoy this and forgive me for perhaps over-mining this period of GD history - there's of course a ton of other interesting periods to explore and we'll move to another next week... t's not every year that NYE falls on a Friday, so I decided I should take advantage of the occasion to play a NYE show. The Dead were of course famous for their NYE concerts and the radio broadcasts of same that often provided many of us with a joyful experience of the boys we perhaps didn't get to see as often as we would like. I recall several New Years evenings at the radio station listening to the simulcast.. ahhhhh .. I can't claim that I heard this one, but as it marks the transition from one great GD year to another, I decided it would definitely be worth playing.. I really love the energy coming out of the New Year countdown into Around and Around.. the Jack Straw is awesome and I think in general the band is in fine form... I'm a sucker for these wonderful 73 shows - this one was just recently released and I can't help but want to play for you here on the Deadpod.. while the 1st set is not as spectacular as set 2 (we will hear it soon, promise!), there's simply no excuse not to play every bit of this. Yes its true that I played this week's 2nd set before - but I think its worth the repeat for the chance to savor this second set from November 15th, 1972.. in particular the 30 minute + Playin' in the Band can really carry you off on a wonderful psychic ride.. I usually try not to repeat the same year too often on the Deadpod, but I'm making an exception for this tape, which I just recently acquired. This is indeed another show from 1972, but it is so good that I wouldn't think of not sharing it with you.. This week we'll listen to the first set, which features some wonderful clean playing and a real treasure trove of the Dead catalog. I"m particulary fond of the Bird Song, and the Cumberland Blues.. but there is plenty to like in this first set: Grateful Dead - November 15, 1972Oklahoma City Music Hall - Oklahoma City, OKSet 1:BerthaBeat It On Down The LineBird SongJack StrawCandymanBig RiverSugareeEl PasoBox Of RainDealCumberland BluesAround And AroundChina Cat Sunflower ->I Know You Rider You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod120310.mp3 thanks for your support.. This week's Deadpod, I think, is not to be missed.. not only does it have one of the greatest Dark Stars you'll ever hear, but the transition from Morning Dew back into Playin' *HAS TO BE HEARD* :) , then they play BROKEDOWN PALACE! I highly recommend this one.... This week's Deadpod was inspired by someone who actually posted about the show that occurred the night after this one on an internet group I belong to - but it brought this entire run to mind and I really wanted to share *this* night with you - as I find the second set in particular, to be quite extraordinary. This entire 3 show run in fact is quite good, and I enjoy this week's first set very much - in particular an outstanding 'Bird Song' and an exquisite China->;Rider.. This week we have another long Deadpod - I hope you don't mind too much but I couldn't bear to break it up.. this set is the second set from a show the Dead played at Red Rocks back in 1978, just before they left for the famous Egypt shows. I decided to share it with you this week because it contains probably the finest version ever of 'If I Had The World To Give'.... I can't say enough about this one.. don't miss it.. The rest of the set isn't too shabby either - I always enjoy a good 'Eyes of the World' and this one is no exception, but the band only played 'If I Had The World to Give' four times.. and this one is fabulous.. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.. This week not only do we have a good set to listen to - its a long one :) This of course is the conclusion of the show we started last week, September 25th, 1981 from Stabler Arena in Bethlehem PA. This is not only an interesting setlist (how many second sets started off with 'Might As Well'?), but its very well played - I'm particularly fond of the Scarlet->Fire and everything after space.... of course I'm a fan of Brent most of the time, so I enjoy his styling here as well, your mileage may vary.. This week's Deadpod comes as the result of a request from a Deadpod listener and contributor (thanks Bud!).. and I think its a very interesting show.. from 1981, one of my favorite and oft-overlooked years, this show features some above average Brett and its really quite a *long* show.. The Althea and Music Never Stops in set 1 are quite interesting.. I hope you agree.. Always is a good time for some Good Ol' Grateful Dead- well this is the definition of primal Dead I think... 68 Dead.. Charlie Miller, what more can you want? This is a great Antham-era Dead show, and its possible that parts of this were used on that album.. I'm very fond of the Schoolgirl.. as good ol' Pigpen is in fine form.. I think this is as fine a second set as you'll hear in early 80's Dead, and I'm very happy to present it this week.. I certainly hope you agree.. This weekend is the last official weekend of Summer and I felt like I should send it out with a great show from one of the Dead's Summer tours - this show was a suggestion from one of my wonderful listeners and I thought it fit the bill. This week we get to hear the second set from the "comeback" show that the Dead played on 12/15/86 in Oakland.. I think this is quite a good show - not only is it the first time they performed "Black Muddy River" but the Playin' Sandwich - and the Terrapin in particular that is in the middle - is *very* tasty.. This week's Deadpod was a request from a brother who just lost a brother - one of his best memories of his late friend was a roadtrip to see this show, and what a show it was! This was the 'comeback' show where Jerry made his return after the coma that nearly took his life in 1986 - no one knew what was going to happen, and what a great choice for a opener in Touch of Grey! The entire show really sparkles, with a newfound energy and some great new MIDI sounds. To me, the energy of renewal present in this show fits perfectly at this time of year, besides I couldn't turn down a grieving friend.. I hope you enjoy it.... This week's show is from a listener request - this show will soon have its 25th anniversary and a very fine show it is so I decided to bring it to you starting this week. A laid-back, west coast Dead show but one where you can almost feel the sunshine and the smiles on everyone's faces.. This week I'm playing the 2nd set from the show on Feb. 21st, 1995 from the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. I find this to be an excellent second set - not only is Jerry's jams out of Truckin' interesting and fun, but the Visions of Johanna is one for the ages. Add to that a great Liberty encore and I think this show is far from depressing... but that's just my opinion.. I hope you enjoy it!! Fifteen years - man that's a long time.. too long.. but on this anniversary time I'm moved to play something from the last year - and I know Garcia was failing and the music wasn't the same and on and on.. but I remember seeing the Dead in '95 , a couple of times, and by the last time I knew it would be the last time .. and anyway, this is one really nice show, there are moments of true beauty here and that's the legacy that Garcia so freely shared with us.... This week we really hit the climax of this show from July 18th, 1972 - the Dark Star ->Comes a Time.. this is fabulous stuff, in my opinion.. and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I've read that Dylan was backstage at this show and that it was the first time he met Garcia - who knows ;) at any rate the group consciousness is clearly evident here and flows from the Star and Comes a Time into that rare 3rd set... A nice fat summer show that marks its anniversary this weekend is up for this week's Deadpod.. This comes to us from Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City NJ, and took place on July 18th, 1972. We'll listen to most of the first set this week - this is a wonderful show, and while Pigpen isn't there (he was sick we're told).. it marks one of the first big stadium shows and I think the Dead did it up right... I especially enjoy the tempo on the China Cat (a bit slower than you're used to hearing.. ) and of course the wonderful Bird Song, Sugaree and Loser.. besides we get a Stella Blue in set 1! This week we have the second set of an incredible performance from the spring of 1981, in Hampton Virginia. This is a *very* well played and energetic performance - Jerry really comes out smoking on the Stranger, and I strongly recommend his work in 'The Wheel' in particular.. I hope you enjoy the show - you'll find the entire second set here -almost 1 hour and 45 minutes of the best in live Dead... This week we have a sweet show from a year that has always been under-represented in the ranks of soundboard tapes - 1981 - This one saw the light of day earlier this year, and I'm really glad to share it with you this week. The boys are really on fire on this one - very tight and well played sets - and while most of the fireworks might come in the 2nd set we'll be listening to next week - just listen to the great transitions here in set 1 and pay particular attention to Jerry on 'Let It Grow' ---wow... This week's Deadpod results once more from a wonderful suggestion from one of our listeners - this one was for something from the Spring tour of 1983 - a great set of shows - and while this show isn't *exactly* one of the ones requested its one I quite enjoy.. it starts out with a thunderous Shakedown Street and the energy throughout is quite good. I had a request a couple weeks back to play something for the folks suffering from the horrible floods that hit Nashville TN recently - I know there are still alot of folks there who won't have their lives together for awhile and I thought about this 'partial' soundboard from a wonderful show the boys played there back in 1972 - in fact you can read all about this show and see some newspaper clippings and such about the show here: http://thevucentennialclass.blogspot.com/2008/10/we-living-still-salute-dead.htmlUnfortunately we only have part of the second set, but it is a really great part! :) I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.. Hello Friends! this week we'll listen to the second set of this fine show from the beginning of the famous Spring of 1977 tour, in Philadelphia PA. This starts with a very nice Scarlet->Fire, a very new combination at the time, and Jerry does an excellent job jamming out on this one. It's followed by a wonderful Samson & Delilah - love the way Bob phrases this one, then a personal favorite, Must have Been the Roses. An unusual Dancin->Got My Mojo Workin'->Dancin' leads into the Wheel-Terrapin combo which closes this gem. This may not be the very best show of this tour, but it is a great listen and I hope you enjoy it!4/22/77 - Grateful DeadThe Spectrum - Philadelphia, PASet 2:Scarlet Begonias ->Fire On The Mountain ->Estimated Prophet ->Eyes Of The World ->Never Trust A Woman ->Drums ->Space ->Not Fade Away ->Stella Blue ->One More Saturday NightEncore:U.S. BluesYou can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod043010.mp3Thanks for listening and of course, for your kind support of the Deadpod!

I can usually hold off on these until May officially rolls in, but this spring has come early, and with it, my desire to sample one of these delicious shows from Spring of 1977 - this one is also from the start of the tour, but its a beauty.. This first set starts off with that slow tempo many of these sets exhibit, but by the time we reach that Playin' which closes the first set - Zowie! - we're really in the zone..Grateful Dead4/22/77The Spectrum, Philadelphia PAOne The Promised Land [#2:01] ; Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo [10:15] ; Looks Like Rain [7:45] ; Deal [6:06] ; El Paso [4:22] ; Tennessee Jed [7:47] ; Estimated Prophet [7:38] ; Peggy-O [7:45] ; Playing In The Band [21:02]You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod042310.mp3Glad you could pick us up this week.. thanks for your support, my friends.

This week we will hear the rest of Grateful Dead's performance at the Scope in Norfolk, VA, on April 3rd, 1982. After that interesting Scarlet->Fire we heard to close last week's Deadpod, the band goes into a fairly long and jammy Estimated, then a nice Eyes into Brent's "Never Trust A Woman" - while this may not have been your favorite back in the day, I admit I really enjoy listening to Brent now.. after the drums/space, the band goes into a nice NFA->Stella Blue.. an always welcome US Blues encore rounds out an enjoyable show..Grateful Dead - April 3, 1982Scope - Norfolk, VAEyes Of The World ->Never Trust A Woman ->Drums ->Space ->Not Fade Away ->Stella Blue ->One More Saturday NightEncore:U.S. BluesYou can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod041610.mp3Thanks for listening - and if you happen to be getting some dough back from Uncle Sam, you can always share a little with the Deadpod by clicking our 'Donate' button on the top of the page ;)

This week we'll listen to the rest of set 1 of this classic Dead show from 1982, The Scope in Norfolk VA. In addition to an outstanding Peggy-O, the highlight of this week's show for me, is the outstanding Scarlet->Fire - check out Bobby who is really "ON" during the transition jam... I think its quite worthwhile...Grateful Dead - April 3, 1982Scope - Norfolk, VABig RiverPeggy-O ->C C RiderBird SongIt's All Over NowAlthea ->Let It GrowScarlet Begonias ->Fire On The MountainYou can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod040910.mp3Thanks for picking us up and as always for your kind support of the Deadpod...

This week we get to listen to the final part of the Dead's performance on April 27th, 1971 at the Fillmore East, NYC., NY. Goode Sing Me Back Home Uncle John's Band Turn On Your Lovelight In addition, because this didn't seem quite enough for a Deadpod , I decided to begin a set suggested by one of my wonderful listeners, 4/3/82 from Norfolk VA - we'll only get to hear the first part of set 1, but I think this is a unique show, and its fun to hear this early 80s Dead sound.. I hope you agree! Sometimes events happen that push me to pick out a show for the Deadpod that I hadn't been thinking about at all.. such happened this week - first the newest "Road Trips" Release - Nov. 15, 1971 from Austin Texas arrived in my mailbox - I don't often gush over these but this is a good one! At about the same time a series of new releases on the tape collecting scene from legendary collector Charlie Miller - including this beauty from a legendary night at the Fillmore East in New York City, April 27th 1971. While this night is best known for the second set we'll hear next week (when the boys are joined on stage by the Beach Boys) - this first set has some mighty fine playing on it - including what is arguably the best "Hard To Handle" you'll find..Grateful DeadApril 27, 1971Fillmore East, New York City, NYset 1:1. This week's Deadpod features a wonderful show that happened on this date 38 years ago.. March 5, 1972 at Winterland in San Franscisco CA. While there are a few tape splices on this overall I think while this is not a pristine recording that's its quite listenable and the band is in fine fine form. Keith is new to the lineup and a great addition at this point (and listen for Wavy Gravy at the start of China Cat).. and of course its great to listen to Pigpen as well..We'll play the second set next week........ This week's Deadpod features the second set of this classic show from the Spring of 1990, appropriately enough I suppose, from Canada, given the Olympics and all :)Brent really shines on this set, as is very apparent in the Scarlet->Fire transition and in the soulful Hey Jude... Jerry favors us with the very last version of 'Believe It Or Not'.. all in all a wonderful set of music...Grateful Dead 3/22/90Copps Coliseum, Hamilton, Ontario CanadaSet2Scarlet Begonias >>Fire On The MountainSamson & DelilahBelieve It Or NotTruckin' >>Drums >>Space/Jam >>The Other One >>Hey Jude >>Sugar MagnoliaEncoreIt's All Over Now, Baby BlueYou can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod021910.mp3My sincere thanks for your support my friends, be well.

This week I'm going to bring you the entire second set from this legendary show that took place on December 6th, 1973 in Cleveland Ohio. My first show, I had no idea what I was witnessing - but of course I'm sure it permanently altered my DNA :) This second set features one of the greatest versions of 'Here Come Sunshine' and of course, a legendary Dark Star. The length of this Deadpod is substantially longer than usual, but the music is so substantial that I know its well worth the investment ...Grateful Dead - December 6, 1973Public Hall - Cleveland, OHset 2:Ramble On RoseMe And My UncleHere Comes SunshineBig RiverDark Star ->Eyes Of The World ->Stella BlueSugar MagnoliaI hope that you find this music as magical as I do, I think it represents the band at one of the apexes of their history....You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod020510.mp3Thank you for your support, my friends..

This week's Deadpod features, yes, another show from 1973.. but speaking of *this* show as 'another show from 73' strikes me as a sacrilege simply because not only was this show, my baptism to the Grateful Dead, its one of their all-time classics, in my opinion. While its true that your brains won't be melted until the Dark Star in the second set, the first set which we will play this week, features plenty of 'Good Old' Grateful Dead to get your blood flowin' during these cold Winter days....Grateful Dead - December 6, 1973Public Hall - Cleveland, OHSet 1: Bertha Mexicali Blues Loser Black Throated Wind They Love Each Other Beat It On Down The Line Deal El Paso Row Jimmy Greatest Story Ever Told China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider Around And AroundYou can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod012910.mp3I hope you enjoy it as much as I always have!! thanks for picking us up, and for your support..

Happy New Year!I hope you have a wonderful New Year!!!Today I decided that I would finish playing the excellent 2nd set from 3/24/86 that I started 2 weeks ago, rather than bring you a New Year's Eve show - in my opinion this is a fine second set that I'm sure you will enjoy!! It contains the very last Lost Sailor->Saint of Circumstance, and an outstanding Morning Dew - I know, there's no Sugar Magnolia, but the Midnight Hour Encore is a keeper!Grateful Dead March 24, 1986 The Spectrum, Philadelphia, PAMississippi Half Step>Women Are SmarterHigh Time*Lost Sailor >Saint Of Circumstance>Drumz>Space>Morning DewCrowd and TuningEncore: Midnight HourYou can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod010110.mp3Thanks for picking us up this week and for your kind support during 2009 - I'm hoping we can keep on rolling in 2010!
Dead Show/podcast for 12/18/09
This week's Deadpod has two unusual occurances - first a show from 1986 - a year I usually find quite depressing and an audience tape to boot! I think when you give this show a listen you'll understand why I decided to ignore my prejudices and post this classic show! This one starts with a smokin' Alabama Getaway into Greatest Story.. there's a *fine* Dire Wolf and I was always a fan of Brother Esau.. the rest of the set is very well played as well, and closes with the second Box of Rain in a week after having not been played since '73.. the crowd goes predictably wild.. :)I hope you enjoy the performance..Grateful Deadthe Spectrum, Philadelphia PA3/24/86 MondayAlabama Getaway [4:33] > Greatest Story Ever Told [4:00] ; Dire Wolf [3:06] ; Little Red Rooster [7:57] ; Brown Eyed Women [4:57] ; My Brother Esau [4:36] ; Ramble On Rose [6:52] ; El Paso [5:11] ; Box Of Rain [4:59]You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod121809.mp3Have a great week - as always many thanks for your kind support !

This week's Deadpod starts with one of my all-time favorite Shakedown Streets - this one really blows the doors off the place then seques into a fine Samson & Delilah..After a sweet Ship of Fools we're treated to a great ride on the Terrapin Express!! This set seems a real precursor of the fine shows to follow in 1980 and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.. the double encore, Alabama Getaway into Promised Land, shows me the band had a great time this night as well!Grateful Dead - December 11, 1979Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall - Kansas City, KSSet 2:TuningShakedown Street ->Samson & DelilahShip of FoolsTerrapin Station ->Lost SailorSaint Jam ->Saint Of Circumstance ->Estimated Jam ->Drums ->Not Fade Away ->Black Peter ->Sugar MagnoliaEncore:Alabama Getaway ->The Promised LandYou can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod121109.mp3

This week's Deadpod features a show that I've always enjoyed, although the recordings that were previously available of it were all flawed in various ways (off pitch, and Jerry was always low in the mix).. this new release from Charlie Miller fixes many of these problems and I think you'll really enjoy the energy the band shows throughout the show....Grateful Dead - December 11, 1979Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall - Kansas City, KSTuningJack StrawLoserMe & My Uncle ->Big RiverAltheaEasy to Love You ->Minglewood BluesChina Cat Sunflower ->I Know You RiderYou can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod120409.mp3I just found out that my good friend - Brian Heath - "the Captain" lost his battle with cancer this week..
