This week's second set from 1/15/79 is a really classic show for the end of the Keith and Donna era... It starts with an unusual but very successful sequeway - from the I Need A Miracle opener into Shakedown Street.. very powerful and it works seemlessly.. I'm also a fan of the Terrapin Station->Playin' In The Band combo that follows, as I really enjoy a powerful live Terrapin.. While this may be a short second set by some standards the band is clearly on during this show and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.. Frankly I equivocated a bit on this week's show.. the show itself was a wonderful request from one of our listener's for a show from a period in the band's history that was frankly uneven, at the end of the Keith and Donna era.. Not only would I call the period itself uneven, but this show as well, with the first set clearly not matching the luminescence of the second set. Be that as it may be, I decided to include the first set this week, partly due to the fact that I am a GD 'completest' as it were, and because its still some damm nice music. While it may be true that the band really revs it up in set 2, I think its worth hearing the entire show, and for support of that argument I point to the Jack Straw and Deal that we can enjoy in this week's first set.. This was quite a week in the Dead community, some fine Furthur shows, Phil's 71st birthday, but overshadowing everything, for me, was the loss of Augustus Owsley Stanley. Owsley was of course instrumental in the formation and development of the Grateful Dead, of the 'big sound' that really defined the concert experience for the Dead, and of course, as a world renowned chemist. t's not every year that NYE falls on a Friday, so I decided I should take advantage of the occasion to play a NYE show. The Dead were of course famous for their NYE concerts and the radio broadcasts of same that often provided many of us with a joyful experience of the boys we perhaps didn't get to see as often as we would like. I recall several New Years evenings at the radio station listening to the simulcast.. ahhhhh .. I can't claim that I heard this one, but as it marks the transition from one great GD year to another, I decided it would definitely be worth playing.. I really love the energy coming out of the New Year countdown into Around and Around.. the Jack Straw is awesome and I think in general the band is in fine form... A nice fat summer show that marks its anniversary this weekend is up for this week's Deadpod.. This comes to us from Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City NJ, and took place on July 18th, 1972. Hello Friends! this week we'll listen to the second set of this fine show from the beginning of the famous Spring of 1977 tour, in Philadelphia PA. This starts with a very nice Scarlet->Fire, a very new combination at the time, and Jerry does an excellent job jamming out on this one. It's followed by a wonderful Samson & Delilah - love the way Bob phrases this one, then a personal favorite, Must have Been the Roses.
