This week I'm doing something I don't usually do - and that is rather than play this complete show over two weeks I decided to play you the real heart of this show this week - (not saying I can't be persuaded to play the rest of this... :) partly because its Thanksgiving and I have something in mind for next week :)Be that as it may - this piece of music, from the second set of 11/17/73 is simply astounding. It represents a true pinacle of the outstanding musicianship that the band achieved during this landmark year. I challange any fan of the band to not be moved by this remarkable piece of music - clearly when they play like this I am firmly convinced that their music is for the ages...Grateful Dead11/17/73Pauley Pavillion, U.C.L.A.Los Angeles, CAFrom Set 2:Playing In The Band >Uncle John's Band >Morning Dew >Uncle John's Band >Playing In The BandStella BlueEl PasoEyes Of The World >Sugar MagnoliaYou can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod112009.mp3Our next Deadpod will be after Thanksgiving - so I want to wish you all a very very special and happy Thanksgiving. Dead show /podcast for 11/13/09

This week's Dead show is more than just a classic 1977 show - its that for sure - and its much more than the first time we get an Eyes of the World going into an Estimated Prophet - although this show is the first time that happens too.. its the kind of magical, rocking, charging life affirming and soul-baring music that makes me fall in love with the Grateful Dead over and over again..There's plenty to love in this set - the fine Samson->Cold rain starts the set perfectly.. the Playin' in the band builds and builds and then explodes into the Eyes of the World that is played at a real breakneck pace. While I'm not often a fan of Eyes played this way, Jerry's almost maniacal energy on this version can't fail but bring you up out of your feet - its almost 'hummingbird' like in the way he makes that guitar flitter and sing.. followed by a good Estimated, but then Phil drops the hammer and the band goes into a short, but intense, Other One...after drums.. the band slowly builds into an Aiko, Aiko that is surprisingly slow-paced, but the band then drops into a classic 1977 Stella Blue, then a playin' reprise to end the set..The encore tells us the band has had as much fun as we have...Grateful DeadCotterell Gym, Reid Athletic Center, Colgate UniversityHamilton, NY11-4-77Set II: "Meet The Jones Gang" [2:36] Samson & Delilah -> [7:22] Cold Rain & Snow [8:30] Playing in the Band -> [12:52] Eyes of the World -> [12:50] Estimated Prophet -> [11:40] The Other One ->[4:57] Drums -> [3:17] Iko Iko -> [10:05] Stella Blue ->[12:12] Playing in the Band [7:04]Encore: Johnny B. I must say that my listeners are simply the best ! I received an simply perfect request this week for the show we're going to start listening to this week as I was casting about in my mind trying to decide what to play... and what a show it is. This show not only shows the band in a period of transition from their slower tempo early '77 style of playing to the more uptempo arrangements of 1978 but its simply one of the best shows of the entire year. The first set which we'll listen to this week, not only blasts out of the gates with a fabulous Bertha->Good Lovin' , but keeps up a most memorable and high energy performance on every tune. Not to be missed, the set closing Let It Grow is truly outstanding, and really shows the unique ability of the band to fire off in all directions yet to find the 'one' and bring us all back into harmony and love.. whew.. a great set and the second set from next week is even better.....Grateful DeadCotterell Gym, Reid Athletic Center, Colgate UniversityHamilton, NY11-4-77Set I:Bertha -> [7:52]Good Lovin' [6:32]Brown-Eyed Women [6:07]Cassidy [5:19]It Must Have Been the Roses [7:31]Sunrise [4:34]New Minglewood Blues [5:51]Dupree's Diamond Blues [6:25]Let It Grow [14:11]You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod110609.mp3thanks for listening - and enjoy the show!

Dead Show/podcast for 10/23/09

I'm surrounded by beautiful Fall foliage here in Michigan this time of year and it brought to mind this quite remarkable period of Dead shows. I will never forget when I saw the Dead open up sitting around and playing accoustic music. I loved those shows, and unfortunately there aren't a whole lot of soundboards of complete shows from that period that are out but this is one and I hope that you enjoy hearing it as much as I do.Yes the acoustic sets may not have as much variety as we'd like - but I really doubt that you can avoid having a smile as you listen to the boys chat between tunes or sing along as you listen to Ripple.. its a real pleasure for me and I hope you enjoy it as well..Grateful DeadRadio City Music Hall10/26/80 - SundayOne : Iko, Iko Dark Hollow, It Must Have Been The Roses, On The Road Again, Jack-A-Roe, Csasidy, China Doll -> Ripple ..Electric -1 :Jack Straw -> Sugaree, Little Red Rooster, Brown-Eyed WomenYou can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod102309.mp3Be well and be kind to each other my friends..

This week we get to listen to one of the best second sets that the band produced in 1983.. Each of these songs individually is played with a verve that will bring a smile to your face, but the totality, as is often the case with the Dead, is much more than the beauty of the individual songs.I could tell you how much I enjoy this particular china->rider, or the wonderful Space into the best St. Stephen of the last three the band played, but I'd rather you simply enjoy this set and the joy that I hope it brings you...Grateful DeadHartford Civic CenterHartford, CT.October 15, 1983set 2:China Cat-> 6:17.47I Know You Rider 7:26.39Playing in the Band-> 16:03.70China Doll-> 7:55.08Drums-> 8:44.38Space-> 9:44.16Saint Stephen-> 7:52.60Throwing Stones-> 9:02.12Saturday Night 4:43.08encore:Brokedown Palace 5:53.00You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod101609.mp3thanks for picking us up - and for your support my friends.PS Happy Birthday Bobby Weir!

I had a request from one of my long time listeners for some primal Dead.. preferably from '67..Well I have been wanting to break this out for a while and while its not quite '67 its only a month off.. Jan of '68 .. although there has been some discussion as to the legitimacy of the date and venue of this show.. what there is no question of is that this is a helluva piece of early Dead music.. I really enjoy the Born Cross-Eyed, well and the Spanish Jam and the Dark Star.. and and : ) Seriously this piece will take several listens to fully digest ..Enjoy this sample of electric. live, Good Old Grateful Dead...Grateful DeadEagles Auditorium, Seattle WA1/22/68AlligatorThat's It For The Other One ->New Potato Caboose ->Born Cross-Eyed ->Feedback ->Spanish Jam ->Dark Star ->China Cat Sunflower ->The Eleven ->Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks) ->Feedback ->And We Bid You Good NightYou can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod091809.mp3As always my thanks for your support.. :)

This week we have the entire second set of the Dead's wonderful performance at the Orlando Arena on April 7th, 1991. A splendid example of Garcia and Hornsby, this set opens with a splendid Crazy Fingers into an always enjoyable Playin'>Uncle John's>Playin' sandwich... I especially enjoy the jamming in the Playin' reprise, which goes into a very enjoyable drumz>space segment. The set closes with a wonderful Hornsby presence on the 'Baby Blue' encore.. As I'm sure you know, this weekend marks the 40th anniversary of Woodstock..of course the Grateful Dead played there - in fact they were one of the headliners - yet they thought so little of their performance there that they never had anything good to say about it..Whether the Dead's performance was any worse than any number of shows is an open question, yet the significance of the event for the culture Zeitgeist is beyond question.. We start this week's Deadpod with a discussion with author Pete Fornatale, whose new book Back to the Garden, The Story of Woodstock presents an oral history of this amazing event..We then listen to two songs from the Dead's performance that night -High Time and Lovelight, the latter where the band is joined by a very high Ken Babbs...Hope you enjoy the show..Grateful Dead8-16-69Max Yasgur's Farm,Bethel, New YorkHigh TimeLovelightYou can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod081409.mp3Thanks for your support, my friends!

I receive quite a few requests for shows to play on the Deadpod - and unfortunately can't publish all of them, but I've had a few requests recently for some "primal" Dead. Coinciding with this request was the release of a new version of the classic show we're going to start to listen to this week, without one of the brutal cuts that plagued all earlier versions, from master collector Charlie Miller, so it seemed to me that the fates were telling me to bring this show to you.. Hello Friends - this week I decided to bring you a historic show - this marked the first time Vince Welnick played with the band. The show itself is quite well-played, the band still had the energy that marked most of the year 1990. While I know Vince isn't everyone's cup of tea, I still think there's plenty to like in this set, and hope you'll enjoy this first set this week, and the second, next week..Grateful Dead - September 7, 1990Richfield Coliseum - Richfield, OHset 1: Cold Rain & Snow ->Walkin' BluesRamble On RoseMe And My Uncle ->Big RiverAltheaWhen I Paint My MasterpieceBird SongPicasso MoonU.S. BluesYou can listen to this week's deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod040309.mp3I'm in the process of moving my family to our new home in Michigan this week (finally!!) so I hope there aren't any problems with the podcast - if there are I may not be around to fix them for a few days, so I ask for your patience in advance.. thank you :)

Time for something a little different, here's a show I've wanted to play for some time, a really solid show that features Jerry in fine voice and the band playing tightly.. I especially enjoy the Jack Straw->Sugaree opener and the West LA in the first set, Bobby announces it's Brent's birthday (which its not).. but Brent does close the set with a fine 'Far From Me'....Please note: I understand that I had a misplaced song in the original podcast - my appologies - if you downloaded the first version you may need to re-download the corrected one..Grateful Dead Boston Garden Boston, MADate 9/18/82 - SaturdayOne Jack Straw [5:03] > Sugaree [11:43] ; Mama Tried [2:31] > Mexicali Blues [4:49] ; West L.A. This week we have the pleasure of listening to the 2nd, electric set of this wonderful show from July 14th, 1970 at the Euphoria Ballroom in San Rafael CA. I always treasure a good 'Easy Wind' and the Cryptical->Other One->Cryptical is wild, young Dead at its best..then we get a Cosmic Charlie! I am relocating to Lansing Michigan this week, and so there may be a week or two sabbatical as I try to get oriented to my new surroundings. This means saying good-bye to my good friends at KOPN, 89.5 FM. While I have some hopes of continuing our relationship, I want everyone there to know how much I love them and thank them for all their support over the years! I do hope to continue broadcasting the Deadpod from Michigan, thanks to the kind support of my wonderful listeners.. thanks so much!

I'll bring you the second set next week - I hope you enjoy it.. This week's Deadpod was suggested to me by a posting on a list server I belong to that claimed this show had "the best" Peggy O ever... now I'm not a believer in that sort of thing generally - too many wonderful versions of these songs to identify, in most cases, "the best" version of any of them.. but it did get me to pull this one out and give it a listen..I was pleased and hope you will be too .. 2nd set next week.. This week we're treated to the second set of October 2nd, 1977 from Portland OR. I think you'll find this to be a a real treat - a wonderful Samson kicks it off, followed by a nearly perfect Scarlet->Fire. I think you'll love what Garcia does here - especially in the transition! The Playin' that follows becomes gloriously out there - I think you'll find Phil is really taking the lead here and in the great jams that follow - the Truckin' and Other One are really fabulous examples of this era of the Dead at its best..
