This week I decided to bring you a relatively unknown but very nice sounding show from the spring of 1982. This is from the University of California at Davis on Sunday, March 17th, 1982. The boys come out and Bobby announces that they forgot something last night and they proceed to play 'One More Saturday Night' as the opener. A very nice Sugaree follows, then after an Uncle->Mexicali, a very solid 'Bird Song'. The band is tight here in the first set and I really enjoy the rocking energy of this period of 1982. Ramble On Rose, Althea, and a great Let It Grow are among the highlights of this excellent first set. As you listen to this second set from March 9th, 1981 it won't take you long at all to realize that fans were treated to a special evening of music 35 years ago. The China Cat -> I Know You Rider is such a wonderful beginning to what is a special night of music. Even a casual listener will soon be captured by the wonderful jam into Rider here. The band doesn't let up either, as this is just the start of a great set of music. A snappy Samson follows here, with a great intro by the drummers and some nice keyboard work by Brent. Ship of Fools leads us into the heart of this set, the Estimated ->Uncle John's Band->Drums/space->Other One->Stella Blue. A classic combination, done most exquisitely. Treat yourself and get lost in this section of the show. They follow with a fine Good Lovin' and come back for a somewhat sloppy US Blues, but by then.. its all smiles. Let''s roll into March with a really excellent show from the Spring of 1981. This one comes to us from New York City, March 9th, 1981 Madison Square Garden. From start to finish this is a most excellent show, one of the best in the earlier Brett years. Here in the first set all the songs are tight and well-played. I particularly enjoy the 'Althea' and 'Bird Song' but we are treated to a most welcome 'Deep Elem Blues' and an unusual 'Ramble On Rose -> El Paso'.. one of those unusual combinations the band was experimenting with this year. This sweet second set from 1973 will close out the month of February 2016 for the Deadpod. Judging from the length of this set I assume this is really not the entire set, however what we have is very pleasing indeed.. Starting off with an early 'Wave That Flag' the boys move through a 'Me and My Uncle' into a well-played if short for the period 'Dark Star'. That moves into an exceptional 'Eyes of the World' .. while not unusual for the period the music excellence here makes me happy every time I hear it. China Doll follows.. enough said. The boys rock it out following that with an Around and Around, Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad and One More Saturday Night before returning for a Casey Jones encore.. Great sounding Dead here.. This week's Deadpod really comes from one of my favorite years for the band - 1973. This show comes from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana IL, from February 22nd, 1973. The first set starts out with a great rocking version of 'Promised Land' followed by a nice, bright version of 'They Love Each Other'. 'El Paso' follows - check out Phils' bass lines on this one, it too rocks.. Jerry brings out a fabulous 'Deal', with an excellent solo to follow. 'Looks Like Rain' follows a great 'Beer Barrel Polka' tuning. Jerry does an animated 'Tennesse Jed' and Phil follows that with a well done 'Box of Rain'. The 'Playin' in the Band' that follows lets the band spread their jazzy wings a bit and is very enjoyable to my ears. Happy Valentines' Day Weekend! This week's second set from Lake Placid New York, October 17th, 1983 should bring a warm smile to any lover's heart as it contains a really wonderful 'To Lay Me Down'.. one of the most romantic of all Garcia's songs. Of course I don't want to minimize the enjoyment the remainder of this set will bring you. They start off with 'Touch', then move into 'Samson and Delilah'.. then the aforesaid 'To Lay Me Down' starts a nice combination as it rolls into 'Man Smart (Woman Smarter)' and Terrapin Station pre-Drums. Following Space, we get a fine version of 'The Wheel', a rocking 'Miracle' then they 'Go Down the Road Feelin' Bad' into a set-closing 'Good Lovin' That one features some interesting improvisation by Bobby.. listen for it.. They return for an unusual 'Revolution' encore to finish their one and only trip to the Olympic Arena in Lake Placid.. Here's a request from one of our listeners.. This week's Deadpod almost falls into the history lesson category.. I had a request from a listener who noticed that the only two years of the band's history that he did not have represented in his collection of Deadpods were 1965 and 1966.. so they asked if that could be remedied. I thought that was probably long overdue so I decided to bring you this week's Deadpod.. it is made of of two different sources, the first being the Warlocks' demo from November 3rd, 1965.. obviously a studio session, I don't have alot of information about this one but its the only recordings from 1965 I have in my collection. The second source comes from a recording that I recall as the very first bootleg of the band I ever had .. that was a bootleg LP 'Vintage Dead'. This source claims to be both that source and one called 'Historic Dead' and recorded round about September 1966 at the Avalon Ballroom. I always thought this one had some excellent numbers on it particularly Pigpen's performance on Schoolgirl and Midnight Hour. All in all I think this is a fun collection to listen to, and I hope you do as well.. probably not mind-blowing.. but still fun.. I hope you enjoy it .. Here's the great second set of the band's performance in LA on January 11th, 1978. They start with a Samson and Delilah, then we get one of the last 8 or 9 performances of 'Sunrise'. The 'Terrapin Station' that follows marks the start of the meat of this set. Following a well-played Terrapin we have a quite exploratory 'Playin' In the Band'. The drums that follows is relatively short, and then Phil joins the drummers for a nice exploration that leads into a quite tasty 'Saint Stephen'. Stephen leads into a rocking 'Not Fade Away' , which they then turn back into a Playin' reprise. A rather unusual Passenger encore follows, marking the end to a quite well played and energetic show. I think this is a real barnburner.. a date in Los Angeles at the Shrine Auditorium in January of 1978. When you look at the set list and see that Minglewood is the opener you might dismiss this set, but don't.. give it a listen .. you can tell right away that Jerry is going to fire this thing up. A nice 'Dire Wolf' follows.. and then a sweet 'Looks like Rain' with nice Donna backing vocals. This matrix tape is nice and bright for the most part and really puts you there at the show.. Big River follows and goes into El Paso for one of the rarer segues - not sure if they ever did this combo in this order before or since.. This week with the start of a new year, I decided to take a look back to a truly fecund period for the band - early 1969. We have an exceptional sounding recording of a show that took place back on January 17th, 1969 in Santa Barbara, California. This recording shows how the band is ready to take off during this seminal year that saw the release of both Aoxomoxoa and Live Dead. The tape starts with a typically rousing 'Lovelight' (some have claimed to be able to tell that Pigpen was even more lit than usual here :) and then goes into a wonderful Dark Star. Saint Stephen and the Eleven follow, and you'll especially enjoy the jamming in the latter. The 'Death Don't Have No Mercy' that follows is for me one of the highlights of this performance.. slow and spooky.. just perfect. The band that rages into a 'That's It For the Other One', followed by their 3rd performance of a sloppy 'Cosmic Charlie' .. all in all a great 90 minutes of primal Dead.. I am certain that you'll enjoy this second set from the Dead's performance back on November 29th, 1980 in Gaineville, Florida. I found this a delight to listen to ,especially the transitions between songs.. those jams are full of life and fire! They start with a great Shakedown Street, which flows nicely into a Franklin's Tower.The Estimated that follows is Soooooo good, in my opinion.. and not only do they not go into Eyes, they go into an interesting He's Gone.. I think you'll find plenty creative here in the pre-drums . and the space and drums is very interesting.. the Stella Blue that follows the Other One is very powerful.. You'll enjoy the Good Lovin' and Casey Jones which ends this one.. This week we have some great fun from the second set of the Dead's performance at the Milkweg in Amsterdam, Netherlands back on October 16th, 1981. This week we get to hear the electric set of this impromptu performance, when the band played on borrowed instruments in a club environment. This set is very much a Bobby dominated set, with the boys opening with a nice Playin' in the Band. Then they pull out 'Hully Gully' for the one and only time they ever played it.. this goes into the Wheel, then Bobby takes over for a Samson and Delilah. This then goes into Gloria, and then, for the first time in over 10 years, Bobby leads the boys into a Lovelight. From there they seque into Goin' Down the Road Feelin' Bad before returning to Playin' In the Band. A nice long Black Peter follows, then the boys end the evening with a spirited Sugar Magnolia.. No encore, but from everything I've read, none was needed. A special evening from all accounts. This week's Deadpod features a fine second set from November 21st, 1985 at the Kaiser Auditorium in Oakland CA. Energetic and well-played throughout this one features a fine set list with two songs that would never again be played by the band, 'She Belongs to Me' and 'Walkin' The Dog'... They open with a wonderful 'Shakedown Street' that rather oddly, goes into a great 'Crazy Fingers'.. I've read that the curtain went up behind the band to a wonderful 'Blues from Allah' mural at that point in the show.... this goes into a nicely played 'Playin' In the Band' with a great jazzy jam leading into the final GD version of 'She Belongs to Me'.. love hearing Garcia sing this.. following drums and space they go into 'The Other One' without the bombs.. Wharf Rat follows then a return to Playin' in the Band and a maniacal 'Gimme Some Lovin' flows into 'In The Midnight Hour'.. the boys return for the 'Walkin' the Dog' encore.. whew! Yikes! Friday the 13th! but not only is it Friday the 13th it is ODD day! - 11/13/15 :) I decided such an auspicious occasion deserved an unusual show and I think this one fits the bill. It features *three* songs that would never be played by the band again - one in this first set and the other two in the second set that we'll hear next week. This is from November 21st, 1985 at the Kaiser in Oakland CA. The show beings with a song that hasn't been played in over 15 years - 'Big Boy Pete'.. they then move into a fun 'Dire Wolf'.. 'Little Red Rooster' features some great Hammond organ from Brett. 'Brown-Eyed Women' follows, always a favorite and in the Uncle->Mexicali that follows Jerry does some fine pickin'.. The set closes with a Ramble on Rose->Looks Like Rain->Might As Well.. It is not a very long first set, nevertheless I hope you enjoy it! This week's Deadpod features the second set from the band's performance on November 2nd, 1979 at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY. The set starts off quite uptempo with a great 'I Need a Miracle' going into a rousing version of 'Bertha'. Bobby performs a fine rendition of 'Lost Sailor' which goes into again a nice uptempo 'Saint of Circumstance'. The highlight of the set follows, at least for myself, which is the fine Drums->Space and in particular the excellent jam which flows from that into a powerful 'Not Fade Away'. A delicate 'Stella Blue' is a perfect counterpoint here, and then the band goes into a set closing 'Sugar Magnolia'. They return for a fine 'Casey Jones' encore. This week's Deadpod features another great request from one of my listeners, this time for the Dead's performance on November 2nd, 1979 at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale N.Y. The first set starts with an amazing sequence of Mississippi Half-Step into a wonderful Franklin's Tower, marred just a bit by the fact that the first 2 minutes of the Half-Step are missing from the soundboard tape. I just love Garcia as he across the Rio Grandio.. :) These two songs along go on for a half hour! What a great opening to this show. The rest of the first set, while somewhat predictable by late 70s standards is pleasing and well-played including a very nice Lazy Lightning->Supplication by Bob and a set closing Deal. This week on the Deadpod we'll finish hearing the end of the third set of the band's performance on 10/10/80 at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco CA. This section starts with a wonderful verison of 'Big Railroad Blues' one of my favorite rockers. Then we get a nice jam that follows in 'Estimated Prophet' into 'Eyes of the World'. This is probably my personal highlight of this week's set as the boys do a great job on a personal favorite. A long drums and space follows as befits a show of this length, and leads us into Truckin' and then a haunting Black Peter. Unfortunately this is where the soundboard disappears and we are listening to the remainder of this set on a pretty decent audience recording. The band closes the night with a pair of good old time rockers, Around and Around and Promised Land, and return for a US Blues encore. All in all quite an evening, and I hope you've enjoyed hearing this show in its' entirety the last three weeks.. We'll continue this week with the Grateful Dead's performance during one of their historic performances at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco, CA on October 10th, 1980. This week we will finish listening to the first electric set and being hearing set 3. While the sound quality may not be as wonderful as that for the acoustic set, I still really enjoy hearing them on these songs. We start with a 'Beat It on Down the Line', then an excellent 'Row Jimmy', and 'New Minglewood Blues'. I think they kick things up a notch now, with an outstanding 'Althea' followed by one of the all time best 'Jack Straw's that I think you'll ever hear. It is only fitting that we go back to the famous 'acoustic' shows of 1980 for this week's Deadpod. This week's Deadpod takes us back to the second set of the Grateful Dead's performance at Madison Square Garden on Thursday September 20th, 1990. Not only is the crowd fired up by a great first set, but it quickly apparent that the boys are not about to phone in this set, as it turns into one of the strongest performances of the 90s. They come out of the gate with a strong rockin' Truckin'.. then move into a wonderful China Cat->I Know You Rider.. while Garcia's voice my be a bit scruffy, his leads are bright and glistening.. and when he leads the boys into Rider and wants to be that headlight he practically brings down the house. I may wish that Vince was a little lower, and Bruce a little higher in the mix.. but that doesn't for me detract from the joy of this one.. a bouncy and fun Man Smart, Woman Smarter leads us into.. a nice extended Drums->Space.. a perfectly played sequeway into one of the best, and longest, Dark Stars of the modern Dead era. This is a real treat, and clearly the highlight of the set, if not the run. I love Jerry's interplay with Hornsby here.. It takes us six minutes before that Star crashes... and Jerry's voice has the perfect dream like quality here.. we all want to go to that transitive nightfall .. we follow as Jerry takes us to a Playin' reprise.. but lucky for us they do not escape the pull of that Dark Star.. and we are led back.. and after the second verse to weird and special places.. entirely fitting for a dark fall evening.... the band then finishes the set with a fine Throwin' Stones and a fun Touch of Grey.. after all that they could have been excused if they did a throw away encore but on this night that wasn't to be.. they end with a rockin' Lovelight.. what a great evening it must have been to be there! Generally considered the strongest show of one of the strongest runs in the band's Post-Brent Mydland career, this week's Deadpod pays homage to the band's performance on September 20th, 1990 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, NY. I clearly remember how excited and happy I was when I first heard of, then finally got to listen to, this run of shows. There was much uncertainty about how the band would hold up after the passing of Mydland, but this run of shows showed that they were truly 'built to last'. The addition of Bruce Hornsby to the lineup provided a welcome surge of energy to Garcia, who, despite a voice that was sometimes a bit raspy, turned in an epic performance. This first set which we'll hear this week, shows a confident and rocking lineup. I'm especially fond of 'Ramble On Rose' and the 'Greatest Story Ever Told' 'US Blues' ending. This week we return to the Berkley Community Theater for the second set of the band's performance back on August 14th, 1971. The tape cuts into Truckin' in progress, luckily however the excellent jam that ends the song is preserved.. from there we go into an early set Drums, and then, suddenly if not unexpectedly, the bombs drop signalling a truly great Other One to follow. Phil really shines on this one, and it leads to a truly psychedelic jam following the first verses. There are some great themes here... see what you can identify! The band flows back into the Other One which really was a signature jam in these days. Following a lengthy tune up Bobby goes into a nice version of 'Me & Bobby McGee'.. The Sugar Magnolia that follows really pops.. they really get cooking here, eventually the move into a smoldering 'Not Fade Away'-> 'Goin' Down The Road'->'Not Fade Away'.. The boys eventually return for an excellent double encore of 'Johnny B Goode' and 'Uncle John's Band'.... I think this one surely stands out as one of the best shows of a most excellent year. A request from one of my supporters, as well as the fact that this past week marked Pigpen's 70th birthday inspired this week's Deadpod selection from the Berkeley Community Theater on August 14th, 1971. This is a great tape that showcases the early versions of many classics like 'Sugaree' and 'Playin' In the Band' as well as some outstanding Pigpen performances. This week's Deadpod continues with the second set from the band's performance on September 6th, 1980 at Lewiston Maine. Wildly praised by those in attendance, I think you'll enjoy this recording even though it has its share of flaws, and several of the songs are only from an audience recording. The set starts with one of those funky 80's Shakedown Streets.. always a great way to get the crowd on their feet and moving! A fairly standard Sailor->Saint leads into a nice Althea, but the magic starts to happen after that with a great Playin->Uncle John's->Space->Drums->Space..this recording, being a matrix, really captures the energy of the crowd when that Uncle John's starts up.. they follow with an excellent drums, then following space a really excellent NFA into the Wheel. I love how they come out of this and back into Uncle John's then into a Playin' reprise.. short but nicely done! A strong Sugar Magnolia closes the set, and the band returns for a double encore, featuring, of course, One More Saturday Night and a sweet Brokedown Palace.. This week we feature yes another show from 1980.. this one was the last show of the summer tour that year, and took place up in Lewiston Maine, at a big outdoor festival there at the State Fairgrounds on September 6th, 1980. This is a wonderful show, and while this recording does suffer some issues (this is a soundboard/audience matrix) it still captures what is a superb performance and I'm certain you'll enjoy it. The boys come out strong out of the gate, with a rocking 'Alabama Getaway' into 'Greatest Story Every Told'.. when Garcia starts out with 'Sugaree' you might think things are about to settle down, but hold on for one of the better versions of this number you are likely to hear.. this is fantastic! The band is not about to slow down however as the remainder of set one contains plenty to like, including a rare, mid-set 'Feel Like A Stranger' and a great China->Rider->Promised Land to close out set 1. While we will hear set 2 next week, with its own spectacular jamming, I hope you find this set a great way to spend a late summer day... Here is the second set of the Grateful Dead's performance at the Glen Falls Civic Center in Glen Falls New York on May 8th, 1980. This set displays the same energy as the excellent first set, starting off with an unusual 'Uncle John's Band' opener. Estimated->Eyes follows, certainly not an unusual combination, but nevertheless Garcia makes the transition worth listening to. The Truckin' into Stella Blue is also very sweet and sad.. lovely. The set ends with some of their favorite rockin' numbers, an unusual Johnny B Goode set closer (instead of an encore). I hope you enjoy this one.. This week we present the third and final portion of the Grateful Dead's performance from the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Racecourse in Watkins Glen NY on July 28th, 1973. This may not be the best show of the year, but there is certainly some fine music here to recommend itself and to fuel many a thought as you listen. This section begins with a nice Stella Blue, and when you think well there is the Jerry Ballad, they go into a stunning 'Eyes of the World'. For my money the highlight of this set, this one features some amazing jams, especially after the chorus, with hints of 'Stronger than Dirt' and even 'Help on the Way'.. I hope you dig this as much as I did. Weir brings us down to earth with a shiny happy 'Sugar Magnolia' to follow, and then they give us a wonderful 'Sing Me Back Home' (patched however from the audience source and with a nasty cut at the end).. Not Fade Away' probably comes from the same audience patch, but features some high energy Keith on piano. The Mountain Jam featuring members of the Allman Brothers and the Band sounds better from a soundboard copy, and while it is a bit sloppy at times it is still a joy to hear again. While clearly not the most structured jam ever, this is still a fine way to celebrate the Days Between by listening to Jerry on this one. When the jam finally ends, you'd think the band would be finished.. but we get a Johnny B Goode encore (with a cut and somewhat muddled vocals).. despite its flaws, I hope you enjoy this week's Deadpod.. On this Blue Moon Friday, we present the 2nd installment of the Grateful Dead's performance at Watkins Glen Speedway on July 28th, 1973. We start with the last song of the 1st set, but arguably the highlight of the show, a classic 'Playin' In the Band'. This one is in my opinion, on a par with the famous soundcheck of the previous day. It doesn't take them long to jump off on a psychedelic musical exploration here. Garcia's leads us on a fantastic voyage here, with a sound that at times I've heard described as a 'swarm of hornets', he leads us way out there. While this jam perhaps doesn't last as long as the day before, I would argue its clearly top shelf jazz improvisation. The second set starts with an 'Around and Around' patched from an audience copy, but we're back to the soundboard for a unique, funky, Loose Lucy. He's Gone develops nicely but transitions rather abruptly into Truckin'. This one suffers some audio problems but nothing to detract from the nice jam that follows the chorus.. where Jerry winds into a "Nobody's Fault' line .. the last minute or so they get a bit lost before going into .... 'El Paso'! .. like coming out of a dark room into the sunshine.. :) Our trip back to the summer of '73 closes this week with a China->Rider.. ahhh that sweet waterfall coming from Jerry's Guitar.. then that engine rolling down the track :) . see you in August! This week I'm going to start to present the Grateful Dead's performance at the famous Watkins Glen racecourse from July 28th, 1973. Not only was this the largest rock concert attendance wise ever up to this point, it of course is most famous perhaps for the soundcheck the band did the day before the actual performance which I'm going to showcase these next 3 weeks. I think that is somewhat unfair, as this is a great show, as most are from 1973, and I think it is a fine show to use to celebrate Jerry's Birthday coming up as it does on August 1st. This first part which I'm bringing you this week starts out with\ a hard charging 'Bertha' - Phil is leading the pack here, followed by a great 'Beat It On Down The Line', with some very nice keyboard work by Keith. On this week's Deadpod the band shows plenty of excitement and enthusiasm throughout a pretty great second set during their first visit to Red Rocks back in 1978. I've always been a fan of Cold Rain and Snow, and this is a great way to open the set. Garcia starts several of these songs rather slowly but they tend to build up to a great climax, and I think that is apparent especially on the Scarlet->Fire. The Dancin' in the Streets is one of the best versions ever, you'll want to move when you hear it! Not Fade Away is quite unique as well, as Jerry goes into a tease of Nobody's Fault but Mine before returning to the Not Fade Away lines.. The double encore of US Blues and Johnny B Goode is a sure sign they had a great night out in the Rockies this day! As I pondered what show to bring you this week, in the shadow of the emotion and excitement of last weekend's Fare Thee Well shows, I settled upon this show which marked the band's first visit to one of their very favorite venues, Red Rocks. This took place back on July 7th, 1978, and while I've previously played the next night's show, which is perhaps a bit more famous and of which probably better tapes circulate, I think you'll be entertained by this effort as well, which certainly displayed all of the excitement and energy present on both nights. This first set is exceptionally well played, starting out with a rousing 'Jack Straw' and containing a number of well-played favorites, including 'Candyman', ' Friend of the Devil' and 'Tennessee Jed'. The set closing 'Music Never Stopped' is of particular interest, as it has a wonderful bit of Garcia jamming both at the beginning and the end.. really superb. The source for this show is a audience/soundboard matrix, as the only circulating soundboard tape is a split mono source with some annoying omissions. I hope you enjoy it. This week i thought it appropriate to feature a set from Chicago so we will finish up with set 2 from the Auditorium Theater in Chicago Il that was played back on June 29th, 1976. Not only is this a very fine sounding recording but I am willing to bet you'll enjoy how the band sounds .. there is quite a bit of very fine jamming going on here. Jerry sounds great on the Candyman, and the Playin' in the Band has some very interesting music in it to say the least! Of course, it is a treat to hear a 'later' St. Stephen and this one is very interesting going into Not Fade Away then back to Stephen. With much excitement building for this week and next week's Fare Thee Well shows, I decided to feature a show from the windy city on this week (and next week's) Deadpod.. this one comes from the Auditorium Theater back on June 29th, 1976. The first thing you'll notice, as with any shows from this period, is the slower tempo. Some people love the more deliberate pacing, some hate it, but I enjoy hearing these shows from time to time and think its easy to appreciate how the band is reinventing themselves after their long layoff in '75. The 'Tennessee Jed' that serves as the opener here is certainly out of place to our ears, but I enjoy the way Jerry phrases his notes here. Cassidy follows, then, another much slower tempo Peggy-O.. Mama Tried follows then, a treat, the very last time the Grateful Dead played 'Mission in the Rain'.. while this was to be a standard in the Garcia Band, I'm pleased to be able to hear it here. This week, set 2 of a wonderful recording of a rockin' show from the Summer of 1980 - 6/20/80 from Anchorage Alaska. This is really a wonderful classic set of Grateful Dead music for the period, and this second set starts out with a fabulous Alabama Getaway into Greatest Story Every Told. The crowd knows they're in for a treat here as the boys rock this one out! Ship of Fools follows and then a wonderful version of Estimated Prophet - the band really lights this one up. This flows not surprisingly into 'The Other One' but the drums and space that follows is quite interesting and lead into a really funky Brent intro into a sweet 'Not Fade Away' - no throwaway set closer here. Black Peter follows , then the boys step on the pedal again to end the set with a great 'Around and Around' into 'Johnny B. Goode'. They return with a 'Don't Ease' me encore to say goodnight to their Alaskan guests.. As I sat outside on my porch last night at 9:30 PM, noticing that it was still light, I thought that it might be time to bring you a show from the land of the midnight sun, Alaska. This week I'm playing a great show from the Dead's only visit to our largest state, back in 1980. This is from the middle of a three night run in a high school auditorium, on June 20th, 1980. I think you'll agree this is a particularly fine first set, starting out with a nice Jack Straw going into a great and bouncing, Franklin's Tower. The Mana Tried->Mexicali duo is well played and full of spunk as well. Weir infused the Let it Grow with just the right imagery and the Althea that follows is a treat to hear. The boys don't stop there, however, as they might on a lesser day, but go on to add four more ditties to this first set including a fine Deal to close it. I think you'll enjoy this first set if you aren't already a fan, and if you are, hopefully you'll enjoy revisiting this fine show from 35 years ago. Here is a second set from a show recently requested from one of my listeners, I happen to think this is one of the better shows of this year, June 19th, 1994 from Autzen Stadium in Eugene Oregon. While I didn't think the first set warranted publishing it, I did think this second set would bring a smile to many peoples' faces as they recalled some of the shows they saw in the 90s. This Sunday afternoon set starts off with a nice Scarlet ->Fire, the transition jam and the jam in Fire in particular is unique and interesting and I think you'll enjoy even Vince's contributions here and in this set. They follow with Samson and Delilah (it was a Sunday after all), then into Way To Go Home, and this one is surprisingly good, in my opinion, although it was never anyone's favorite. Then comes the heart of this set, a very good Playin' In the Band into Uncle John's Band. Billy and Mickey do a great Drumz and Space. The Other One that follows is decent if predictable, but I always enjoyed the 90's Wharf Rats and this is a quite good one. Bobby ends the set with a good reading of Good Lovin' .. then the boys come out and do a sweet 'Knockin' as the encore. This is a decently sized second set, especially for the era, and I hope you'll enjoy it as I thought I should mix it up a little this week on the Deadpod. This week the Deadpod takes you way back to the spring of 1970 when the Dead made their very first trip across the ocean to England.. this show took place on May 24th, 1970 I decided to publish the entire show as it was not broken into sets, and while the sound leaves alot to be desired it is quite listenable for the most part, and as a historical document of the day I am hoping that you'll get into it as I did. The band once described the crowd at this show as the coldest they ever encountered, and its clear that they work very hard at getting them juiced up as their energy in this set is pretty full tilt. The Casey Jones starts out with very degraded sound but it gets better as Bear dials it in.. the China->Rider is quite good and contains a unique transitional jam. Hard To Handle is classic Pigpen, and you'll hear that he is in fine form throughout this set. The Cryptical->Other One->Cryptical->Attics is a treat, as it is a very early version of Attics.. The Dark Star is excellent, and displays the qualities of the early primal Dark Stars. The Lovelight is over the top, and while sadly again suffering from some sonic degradation, it is still great to hear Pigpen in such fine form. As we turn the corner this weekend into the unofficial start of summer, we have a smokin' hot set of Dead music to serve as the soundtrack. This is set 3 of the band's performance on May 26th, 1973 at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco. The boys open with a straight ahead rockin' version of 'Mississippi Half Step'.. some beautiful Garcia licks there in the closing.. then 'Me & My Uncle', then we get into the heart of the matter.. a nice, stretched out 'He's Gone'.. including some great Phil bass and baritone vocals.. then we go into a wonderful stretch of music, one of the best of a very good year as the band dissolves He's Gone into Truckin'.. then we go into a great Other One intro and jam, then a beautiful Eyes of the World->China Doll.. what a day! Keith is on the money here and Billy is as always, outstanding. As I sit back and enjoy this I marvel at the band's energy here after already having played two smoking' sets. Is it one of the best of that very good year? prehaps.. but it is not worth the argument, it is a pleasure to behold.. This week's Deadpod featu res a great set of music, from the second of three sets that took place back on May 26th, 1973 at the old Kezar Stadium in San Francisco CA. As I understand it this was an unusually warm and sunny day in San Francisco and the band's performance matched the weather. The Here Comes Sunshine that opens this second set is in my opinion, one of the better ones the band every played. El Paso follows, then a Loser that is notable for the wonderful interplay between Jerry and Bob.. Beat It on Down the Line is always a crowd pleaser, then Donna Jean sings 'You Ain't Woman Enough....'.. I always get a kick out of that.. Phil follows with a nice Box of Rain, then the highlight of this set, the China->Rider. Not to denigrate either song, but catch the really kewl transition between these two.. its unique and not the ordinary way the band blends these two together.. You'd think that would be enough, but not on this day.. the boys follow with Big River, and excellent Bertha and an Around and Around to keep the crowd dancin'.. then they'll be back for set THREE next week here on the Deadpod.. This week's Deadpod comes as a result of a request from a longtime supporter of the 'pod.. an excellent choice from 1973.. this is quite a famous show and there have been great tapes around but I'm quite certain you'll enjoy it, and don't believe I've ever featured it on the Deadpod .. This is from Kezar Stadium in San Francisco CA back on May 26th, 1973. The gig featured both Waylon Jennings and the New Riders of the Purple Sage as opening acts and from all reports they both put on fine sets so the crowd was well warmed up by the time the Dead took the stage around 2 in the afternoon. We will hear the first set this week which consists for the most part, of well played classic first set Dead tunes. While most of the surprises and jamming will come in what follows, I think you'll enjoy this fine recording.. I know I find myself dreaming of sitting out in the sunshine when I heard the opening notes of 'Jack Straw'.. I hope you'll forgive me for consecutive weeks that include 'The Race Is On' but it's always fun to hear... They Love Each Other is one of the bounciest versions ever! It's hard not to imagine Garcia smiling on this one.. The Playin' in the Band that closes the set is tight and jazzy and gives a hint as to the what is to come.. Here we are in the beautiful month of May - Kentucky Derby weekend no less - so I wanted to bring you a set that of course included the band's wonderful rendition of George Jones' 'The Race Is On'.. In addition, this pick comes from the fabulous Frost Amphitheater back in the fine year of 1989.. This week's show from May 6th, 1989, happened to be a Rex benefit as well, and I think it is a fine example of the band's work during this period which was always easy to listen to and enjoy. While the setlist is perhaps not extraordinary, aside from the Race Is On's inclusion, the songs are all quite up tempo (with the exception of Walkin' Blues and a perhaps not the best-played version of West LA.. ) and I'm sure the crowd was enjoying itself in the California sunshine. I just love the energy on this tape.. the opening Other One on this tape just crackles with it.. The Dark Star is full of Pigpen's funky organ in that characteristic early opening.. The Eleven is one of my favorite versions ever.. and there's really no words to describe the Alligator->Caution.. this is the highlight of an incredible show.. dig it. Spring is finally arriving around here and my thoughts turned to the great Spring tour of Europe 72. Since that tour is completely released on the box set I am going to share with you this week a wonderful set from the fall of 1972. This show took place on October 27th, 1972 in Columbus Ohio. I don't have, nor do I believe there exists, a copy of the first set that matches the quality of the audience recording of set 2 that I've chosen for this week's Deadpod. This is said to be Bear's recording and I would not doubt that from the quality - I do think you'll enjoy it. Beyond that the performance is first rate. Especially from Truckin' through The Other One, to a Mississipi Half-Step(!) the band is on fire. I'm a huge fan fo the Uncle John's encore as well.. a great set from a great year.. I hope you enjoy this one! This week we will listen to the second set from the Dead's performance that took place on April 15th, 1983 in Rochester NY. This is a very long, sometimes meandering set, that clocks in at over one hour and 47 minutes. Despite its length, it seems a bit void of Garcia vocals. The set starts out well enough with a Feel Like A Stranger and Samson and Delilah to get the crowd moving. Brent follows with 'Maybe You Know' a tune I always enjoyed until he stopped performing it in '86. After that we get a very soulful 'He's Gone' which leads into one of only three performances of a little ditty that has been called 'Bob Star' or 'Little Star' .. this leads into a long and quite space drums and space. Five songs follow post space, all pretty well played and ending with a 'Johnny B Goode'. Jerry comes out for the encore with a 'It's All Over Now, Baby Blue' which was done quite often in that slot during this period.
