In the States, the Food and Drug Administration announced plans to ban flavored e-cigarettes. The prohibition is simultaneous with hundreds of reports of peculiar respiratory illnesses linked to vaping nicotine and cannabis products. It's been a week since Hurricane Dorian ravaged the Bahamas, and many of these poor black victims are being told returning home is an unlikely option. President Donald J. No criminal charges were filed for Garner's death. The Context of White Supremacy welcomes Dr. Jason Miller. A North Carolina State University professor of English, Dr. Miller is a White man and who studies the life and writing of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Langston Hughes. He's credited with locating an original recording of Dr. King giving a "trial run" of his "I Have a Dream Speech" that was given in North Carolina nine months before the 1963 March on Washington. Earlier this summer, Dr. Miller published a report on North Carolina freedom fighter Dorothy Cotton and her "relationship" with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the report, Dr. Miller references a number allegations about extramarital affairs and promiscuous behavior by the civil rights minister. The ban was later lifted. In Arkansas, a White Woman held four black male students at gun point and accused them of suspicious behavior. The teens were selling cards for a school fundraiser. Jerri Kelly, who happens to be the wife of a Cross County Jail Administrator, did not receive a mug shot because of supposed "medical issues." The Context of White Supremacy hosts our seventh study session on Gavin de Becker's 1997 bestseller, The Gift of Fear: Survival Signals That Protect Us from Violence. de Becker is a White man, Racist Suspect. A number of C.O.W.S. listeners suggested that we study this book to help non-white people better perceive when they may be in danger. The System of White Supremacy is designed to encourage White and non-white people to harm black people. The hope is that by reading this book, listeners will be more alert and responsive to signals that inform of us of possible danger. Interestingly, in some circles, this text is regarded as "feminist" literature. de Becker presents (White) Women as the prototypical victims of violence - while completely ignoring the omnipresent brutality against black people. Last week's segment examined the importance of giving a firm "no" when dealing with people who are "persistent." He again advocates planned ignoring as continued talking requires more contact, opportunities for negotiation and the possibility of an escalation beyond annoyance to abuse. The text also discussed children who turn violent, and included commentary on the 1978 case involving Willie Bosket.
