Incels are the online community, made up predominantly of men, who define their identity in the fact that they are involuntarily celibate. the Incel subculture, as regular listeners of Nighttime know, doesn't just wallow in misogynism, self pity, and entitlement in the internet’s dark corners.. Some self identifing Incels have seen their inability to get laid as justification to commit horrific acts of mass murder... It's a twisted, dark, and very troubling community, but it's also fascinating and I think it's worth exploring. In a prior episode we joined Craig Ferguson (Dead in Halifax) for a walk amongst the dead who lay in Halifax's Camp Hill Cemetary. In the early morning hours of July 25, 2018 a 911 call was made in Brome Lake, Qc. The caller, Riley Fairholm, reported a man in distress, carrying a handgun, and shouting to himself. When the police arrived on the scene it took only 61 seconds before a responding officer shot the young man holding the gun dead. In a confusing turn, the caller was the man with the gun. The events that led up to and followed that police interaction have received much more than 61 seconds of consideration. It started with a post to the UFOs Above Canada discussion group on facebook… “I'm wondering if there are any people living in Kingston, Ontario. Since December 3, 2020 we have been taking pictures of crafts over our house. Up to 22 craft at once. I also have pics of craft with hatches open and small orbs flying out of them. We are 2 older people who were not looking for this experience, it came to us. I am not technically savvy and need a person to help us to identify, examine and file these pictures. If there is anybody in this group who can help we would really appreciate it.” Shortly after posting, Candice and “Onagottay” appeared on Nighttime to discuss their serial encounters with unexplained aerial objects. On May 6, 2020 three year old Dylan Ehler was visiting his grandmother’s home in Truro, NS. While playing in the back yard, his grandmother turned her back to Dylan briefly to leash a dog. At some point during that moment of inattention, Dylan vanished. Despite nearly a year of searching, the only evidence located was Dylan’s two rubber boots, both found caught amongst debris in shallow brook that flows a short distance from where he was last seen. In a prior episode, Dylan’s father Jason Ehler joined us and shared the story of his missing son, including his thoughts on the level of care Dorothy provided Dylan prior to his disappearance. That discussion with Jason made me realize that Dorothy's story is crucial in understanding what may have happened to the three year old boy at the center of this story. Up until now Dorothy has largely remained silent, allowing others to tell her story. But that will change with this episode. When scrolling through the news over my morning coffee, I found myself face to face with what can only be described as the most controversial garden in St. Catharines, Ontario. When Christina and Matt designed their garden, they started by purchasing two large wooden coffins, placing them in their yard and filling them with soil. As it turned out their neighbours didn't share the same taste. A complaint to by law enforcement would begin the most interesting garden or bylaw enforcement story the town of St. Catharines Ontario has ever seen. This story is going to take us to an alleyway in Surrey, BC. On an otherwise uneventful night, in August of 2017, something horrible happened there. Despite the passage of time and tremendous efforts we still don't know what happened exactly, but when the dust settled 19 year old Tanner Krupa was dead. Tanner had only been in Surrey for a handful of days, there for a short work trip. Just a 19 year old who stepped out to grab something at a near by convenience store and somehow ends up dead in an alleyway hours later. The only evidence left behind is images on a nearby security camera showing two white vehicles fleeing the scene. The vehicles, nor their occupants, have yet to be identified. Listeners of Nighttime, consider this episode a sort of public service. This episode has the power to ease the minds of many people out there who feel they have witnessed a fleet of alien invaders in the skies above Canada. Amanda Todd was still a child when she began to share her love of singing with viewers around the world on Youtube. Perhaps she was hopeful that she would be discovered like Justin Bieber, another Canadian youtuber, recently had. Like Justin, Amanda too found a sort of fame as a result of sharing her talents. Tragically, Amanda is known around the world not for her voice or her charm but as a cautionary tale about the evils that lurk all around us. As we know now, one of the people who was moved by Amanda's performances managed to sneak into her personal life, and infiltrate her inner circle. When Amanda shared an intimate photo, the anonymous predator would begin an odyssey of sextortion, harassment, and cyber stalking that would end in Amanda's death. Since taking her own life, over 50 million people have heard Amanda's story, largely as a result of a viral video she made shortly before her death. In the video, shot on a webcam in black and white, Amanda shares the her story by flipping through a series of index cards as she visibly sobs. Tonight, in this episode of Nighttime, we are going to hear Amanda's story by someone who has stood by Amanda through it, and still to this day carries on her search for justice, and continues her legacy. In the last episode, my guest Ian Rogers spoke both about his experiences investigating the Guardian case as well as the route this story took to being featured on a major CBC Documentary ‘UFO Town’. the Carp, Ontario UFO case widely centers on an anonymous whistle blower using the name 'Guardian' who for a period in the early 90s sent strange packages to UFO researchers around the world claiming that world government’s were attempting to cover up the crash of an extraterrestrial craft just outside of Ottawa in Carp, Ontario. The packages included a rambling manifesto, photographs of purported aliens, and perhaps most interesting, a vhs tape containing video of what was supposed to be a flying saucer. Despite significant attempts Guardian was never identified. in fact.. they are still trying. Our guest is just the fella to walk as through this case. Ian Rogers is a present day author, but in the early 90s when the investigation into the guardian case was active, Ian was a teenage UFO investigator who managed to walk right into the middle of one of Canada's most bizarre cases. Lisa Marie Young was a 21-year-old indigenous Canadian who disappeared from Nanaimo, British Columbia on June 30, 2002. Lisa had spent her last known night at a local nightclub and several house parties, before accepting a ride to a fast food restaurant from a man she had just met. Her final communication was a series of distressing messages she sent to a friend suggesting she was being held against her will. Although Young has never been found, her disappearance is being investigated as a homicide. The Halifax Airport John Doe is an unidentified man who was found deceased in a forested area near the Halifax Stanfield International Airport in October of 2004. He was found hanging from a tree with many of his personal possessions, yet no identification. Local police do not believe foul play was involved in his death, however many believe their is much more to his story. Elisa Lam was a Canadian student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, who had disappeared under mysterious circumstances while staying at the infamous Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles. When LAPD released the last known video footage of Elisa, the often discussed elevator video, Elisa's disappearance became one of the world's highest profile cases. Toronto, Ontario is a big city... home to over two million... and a bunch of them are online approaching children with criminal intent. Fortunately, their dark fantasies are a little further out of reach thanks to a vigilante group called the Toronto Predator Poachers. Using fake online accounts and elaborate decoy work, this group helps pull Toronto's child sex predators out of the shadows and into the light. The predator, expecting to meet a child, instead comes face to face with an over 6 foot tall, 200+ lb. man, holding a camera. He's not there to arrest them or harm them physically. What he does do however is make them call their wives or parents to admit what they are up to, and if that wasn't bad enough he also posts videos of the whole thing online and reports them to police. Snow was on the ground, a chill was in the air, and Christmas was all around. I put on my boots and hat, zipped up my coat, and headed into the cold to check my mailbox. When I opened it, I found some flyers, a gift I had ordered for my mom, and a handful of Christmas cards friends and family who still hold on to the traditional way of staying connected. My grandma scribbled her name on one, my friend Craig sent me his regards along with an updated family photo, but there was one I couldn’t immediately identify that looked a little thicker than the rest. The name on the front of the envelope wasn't that legible, so I opened it still not knowing who exactly it was from. inside, was a very typical Christmas card... decorated with a little church and a stylized font wishing Christmas Blessings. overall very typical… until I opened it. Inside, I saw a card completely covered with barely legible writing, and a separate multipage letter covered with the same scribbled text. Just as I began contemplating who sent such a bizarre card I noticed the only piece of easily legible writing. For as far back as history can tell, inhabitants of Cape Breton Island have found sustenance in our fisheries, our forests, our coal, Steel, and of course tourism. These industries have brought people to Cape Breton from around the world or sent a little bit of Cape Breton to them. But, if we were considering the island’s greatest exports, well that may come as a bit of a surprise. An unassuming Cape Bretoner, with a smile much bigger than his ego, is responsible for some of the world's biggest songs by some of the world's biggest artists. It's fair to say that Gordie Sampson was able to send a taste of Cape Breton Island to more people than our natural industries ever could and he has the Grammys to show for it. After achieving success in Canada as a solo performer, Gordie found his place in writing for others. This story is hard to listen to, but equally so, it's important. We are going to be joined by someone who's personal tragedy has positioned them to become an internationally known activist and advocate against sexualized violence and cyber bullying. Her name is Leah Parsons and what she and her family have been through over the last 7 years... simply put... is horrific. The story starts with the rape of Leah's then 15 year old daughter by a group of young men and continues with a 17 month quest for justice, and odyssey to stop photos of the rape from circulating around Rehteah's school. Obviously, what will be discussing isn't for the faint of heart, but as horrible as it is, you will hear some positives. The crimes against Leah's daughter highlighted significant problems with many of the institutions parents rely to keep their children safe and eventually, this story would the catalyst for change. To prevent something like this from happening again new cyber bullying laws were introduced and sweeping changes were implemented in schools, police departments, and within our mental health services. It's just a shame that Leah's daughter Rehteah had to pay for those changes with her life. Stanton T. Friedman was a nuclear physicist and professional Ufologist who resided in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. For a period of time in the late 1980s, Cape Breton’s Chickie Macphee became one of his island’s most famous and most beloved residents. His notoriety didn’t begin with any great feat, show of skill, or significant act of generosity. I've always found Cemeteries a calming and peaceful place but not everyone is comfortable roaming their twisted paths and especially so under moonlight. If that describes you, you may find this episode a bit uncomfortable at first as roaming around a graveyard is exactly what we are going to do. I've called upon Craig Ferguson, a local man who spends a considerable time amongst the dead, to take the lead. He produces a unique project that merges art, journalism, and story Telling called Dead in Halifax. His work starts with a headstone catching his eye and leads to a fact finding mission into the life and dead of the person buried in the ground below. It's like a modern history lesson for goths. For a period of weeks, in May of 2007, it appeared a serial killer may have been targeting Halifax Nova Scotia’s gay community. When a suspect was identified and arrested at the Mexican - USA border, it turned out to be something all together different. To put it plainly, Glen Race thought he was destroying vampires. When Clarenville RCMP Constable Jim Blackwood responded to a report of an unusual object in the sky, he expected it to be the next in a series of recent reports that all resulted in nothing more than a confused citizen describing a vague light. When he arrived to the scene he found a group of mystified witnesses viewing the still clearly visible object with binoculars. He knew then that this report was unique. The incredible events which unfolded during the roughly two hour long sighting would fuel both an international media whirlwind and a localized UFO craze. Once upon a time, I loved Tim Horton's. I drank their coffee and I ate their fresh baked goods, but those days are gone. The love affair is long over. To put it bluntly, I think they suck now. What puzzles me, is that it wasn't always this way and that's why I'm left with burning questions... When did they lose their way, why did they lose their way, and will they ever get back the magic they used to have? It wasn't until I happened upon a piece of investigative journalism in a MacLean's magazine that the full picture of this betrayal became apparent. The piece was titled "How Tim Horton's lost it's way" and as I read it the veil of marketing that had obscured the slow decline of Tim Horton’s was forcefully pulled away and Canada's dirty secret was exposed. Some of the points raised in that article will be discussed and expanded upon in this episode as in this episode, I'm joined by author and journalist Corey Mintz. In this episode, we are going to come face to face with one of most prosecuted people in Nova Scotia's storied history. Our guest is a criminal so hardened that when I asked him for an estimate on the length of his rap sheet, he simply drew a blank and giggled. But, that's probably for the better as listing the charges this man has faced would be about as interesting, and as exhausting, as reading through the Canadian Criminal Code. But, as you will soon learn, there is much more to it. when the layers of legalese are peeled back this isn't the story of a career criminal. It's the story of a man who simply wanted to hang around at tim horton's parking lot drinking coffee with his friends. The problems started when he lost his license and bought of horse as a way to get around town. If this man on horseback was a can of gasoline... the match that ignited it would be his dispute with the management of his small town Tim Horton. After several instances of his horse answering the call of nature on their property.... He was told that he, nor his chestnut quarter horse were no longer welcome on their property... a demand he refused to obey. 24 year old Cortney Lake was last seen the evening of June 7, 2017 in the area of her Mount Pearl, NL home. At the time of her disappearance, Cortney’s life was in a state somewhere between transition and turmoil. An ex boyfriend had just been released from prison for a series of crimes against her, whereas another ex, the father of her young son, was pressuring her to rekindle the romantic relationship the pair ended years prior. When her whereabouts were unaccounted for, suspicions were directed towards both of these me as well as her current boyfriend. However suddenly, and with little warning, she seemed to find herself on the brink of crisis. On the morning of January 10th, 2020 Holly phoned her parents in Calgary to request help returning home. During the call Holly would share the frightening, yet vague, details of a traumatic experience that led her to spending the prior night running for her life from either a real or imagined threat. It was obvious she needed help but shortly before her father arrived, she walked out of her apartment and into the cold air and pouring rain.
