When scrolling through the news over my morning coffee, I found myself face to face with what can only be described as the most controversial garden in St. Catharines, Ontario. When Christina and Matt designed their garden, they started by purchasing two large wooden coffins, placing them in their yard and filling them with soil. As it turned out their neighbours didn't share the same taste. A complaint to by law enforcement would begin the most interesting garden or bylaw enforcement story the town of St. Catharines Ontario has ever seen. This story is going to take us to an alleyway in Surrey, BC. On an otherwise uneventful night, in August of 2017, something horrible happened there. Despite the passage of time and tremendous efforts we still don't know what happened exactly, but when the dust settled 19 year old Tanner Krupa was dead. Tanner had only been in Surrey for a handful of days, there for a short work trip. Just a 19 year old who stepped out to grab something at a near by convenience store and somehow ends up dead in an alleyway hours later. The only evidence left behind is images on a nearby security camera showing two white vehicles fleeing the scene. The vehicles, nor their occupants, have yet to be identified. Listeners of Nighttime, consider this episode a sort of public service. Amanda Todd was still a child when she began to share her love of singing with viewers around the world on Youtube. Perhaps she was hopeful that she would be discovered like Justin Bieber, another Canadian youtuber, recently had. Like Justin, Amanda too found a sort of fame as a result of sharing her talents. Tragically, Amanda is known around the world not for her voice or her charm but as a cautionary tale about the evils that lurk all around us. As we know now, one of the people who was moved by Amanda's performances managed to sneak into her personal life, and infiltrate her inner circle. When Amanda shared an intimate photo, the anonymous predator would begin an odyssey of sextortion, harassment, and cyber stalking that would end in Amanda's death. Since taking her own life, over 50 million people have heard Amanda's story, largely as a result of a viral video she made shortly before her death. In the video, shot on a webcam in black and white, Amanda shares the her story by flipping through a series of index cards as she visibly sobs. Tonight, in this episode of Nighttime, we are going to hear Amanda's story by someone who has stood by Amanda through it, and still to this day carries on her search for justice, and continues her legacy. In the last episode, my guest Ian Rogers spoke both about his experiences investigating the Guardian case as well as the route this story took to being featured on a major CBC Documentary ‘UFO Town’. When I was putting that episode together I learned that my friend, and past guest of the show, Chris Rutkowski was one of the ufo investigators who received Guardian's mailings back in the 80s and 90s. the Carp, Ontario UFO case widely centers on an anonymous whistle blower using the name 'Guardian' who for a period in the early 90s sent strange packages to UFO researchers around the world claiming that world government’s were attempting to cover up the crash of an extraterrestrial craft just outside of Ottawa in Carp, Ontario. The packages included a rambling manifesto, photographs of purported aliens, and perhaps most interesting, a vhs tape containing video of what was supposed to be a flying saucer. Despite significant attempts Guardian was never identified. in fact.. they are still trying. Our guest is just the fella to walk as through this case. Ian Rogers is a present day author, but in the early 90s when the investigation into the guardian case was active, Ian was a teenage UFO investigator who managed to walk right into the middle of one of Canada's most bizarre cases. Lisa Marie Young was a 21-year-old indigenous Canadian who disappeared from Nanaimo, British Columbia on June 30, 2002. Lisa had spent her last known night at a local nightclub and several house parties, before accepting a ride to a fast food restaurant from a man she had just met. Her final communication was a series of distressing messages she sent to a friend suggesting she was being held against her will. Although Young has never been found, her disappearance is being investigated as a homicide. The Halifax Airport John Doe is an unidentified man who was found deceased in a forested area near the Halifax Stanfield International Airport in October of 2004. He was found hanging from a tree with many of his personal possessions, yet no identification. Local police do not believe foul play was involved in his death, however many believe their is much more to his story. Elisa Lam was a Canadian student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, who had disappeared under mysterious circumstances while staying at the infamous Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles. Toronto, Ontario is a big city... home to over two million... and a bunch of them are online approaching children with criminal intent. Fortunately, their dark fantasies are a little further out of reach thanks to a vigilante group called the Toronto Predator Poachers. Using fake online accounts and elaborate decoy work, this group helps pull Toronto's child sex predators out of the shadows and into the light. The predator, expecting to meet a child, instead comes face to face with an over 6 foot tall, 200+ lb. man, holding a camera. He's not there to arrest them or harm them physically. What he does do however is make them call their wives or parents to admit what they are up to, and if that wasn't bad enough he also posts videos of the whole thing online and reports them to police. Snow was on the ground, a chill was in the air, and Christmas was all around. I put on my boots and hat, zipped up my coat, and headed into the cold to check my mailbox. When I opened it, I found some flyers, a gift I had ordered for my mom, and a handful of Christmas cards friends and family who still hold on to the traditional way of staying connected. My grandma scribbled her name on one, my friend Craig sent me his regards along with an updated family photo, but there was one I couldn’t immediately identify that looked a little thicker than the rest. The name on the front of the envelope wasn't that legible, so I opened it still not knowing who exactly it was from. inside, was a very typical Christmas card... decorated with a little church and a stylized font wishing Christmas Blessings. overall very typical… until I opened it. Inside, I saw a card completely covered with barely legible writing, and a separate multipage letter covered with the same scribbled text. Just as I began contemplating who sent such a bizarre card I noticed the only piece of easily legible writing. In all corners of our country, if you ask the right people, you’ll hear stories of ghosts or monsters that at some time in the area’s history briefly made themselves known. For as far back as history can tell, inhabitants of Cape Breton Island have found sustenance in our fisheries, our forests, our coal, Steel, and of course tourism. These industries have brought people to Cape Breton from around the world or sent a little bit of Cape Breton to them. But, if we were considering the island’s greatest exports, well that may come as a bit of a surprise. An unassuming Cape Bretoner, with a smile much bigger than his ego, is responsible for some of the world's biggest songs by some of the world's biggest artists. It's fair to say that Gordie Sampson was able to send a taste of Cape Breton Island to more people than our natural industries ever could and he has the Grammys to show for it. This story is hard to listen to, but equally so, it's important. We are going to be joined by someone who's personal tragedy has positioned them to become an internationally known activist and advocate against sexualized violence and cyber bullying. Her name is Leah Parsons and what she and her family have been through over the last 7 years... simply put... is horrific. The story starts with the rape of Leah's then 15 year old daughter by a group of young men and continues with a 17 month quest for justice, and odyssey to stop photos of the rape from circulating around Rehteah's school. Obviously, what will be discussing isn't for the faint of heart, but as horrible as it is, you will hear some positives. The crimes against Leah's daughter highlighted significant problems with many of the institutions parents rely to keep their children safe and eventually, this story would the catalyst for change. To prevent something like this from happening again new cyber bullying laws were introduced and sweeping changes were implemented in schools, police departments, and within our mental health services. It's just a shame that Leah's daughter Rehteah had to pay for those changes with her life. I've always found Cemeteries a calming and peaceful place but not everyone is comfortable roaming their twisted paths and especially so under moonlight. When Clarenville RCMP Constable Jim Blackwood responded to a report of an unusual object in the sky, he expected it to be the next in a series of recent reports that all resulted in nothing more than a confused citizen describing a vague light. Once upon a time, I loved Tim Horton's. I drank their coffee and I ate their fresh baked goods, but those days are gone. The love affair is long over. To put it bluntly, I think they suck now. What puzzles me, is that it wasn't always this way and that's why I'm left with burning questions... When did they lose their way, why did they lose their way, and will they ever get back the magic they used to have? It wasn't until I happened upon a piece of investigative journalism in a MacLean's magazine that the full picture of this betrayal became apparent. The piece was titled "How Tim Horton's lost it's way" and as I read it the veil of marketing that had obscured the slow decline of Tim Horton’s was forcefully pulled away and Canada's dirty secret was exposed. Our guest is a criminal so hardened that when I asked him for an estimate on the length of his rap sheet, he simply drew a blank and giggled. He was told that he, nor his chestnut quarter horse were no longer welcome on their property... a demand he refused to obey. 24 year old Cortney Lake was last seen the evening of June 7, 2017 in the area of her Mount Pearl, NL home. At the time of her disappearance, Cortney’s life was in a state somewhere between transition and turmoil. An ex boyfriend had just been released from prison for a series of crimes against her, whereas another ex, the father of her young son, was pressuring her to rekindle the romantic relationship the pair ended years prior. When her whereabouts were unaccounted for, suspicions were directed towards both of these me as well as her current boyfriend. 24 year old Cortney Lake was last seen the evening of June 7, 2017 in the area of her Mount Pearl, NL home. At the time of her disappearance, Cortney’s life was in a state somewhere between transition and turmoil. An ex boyfriend had just been released from prison for a series of crimes against her, whereas another ex, the father of her young son, was pressuring her to rekindle the romantic relationship the pair ended years prior. When her whereabouts were unaccounted for, suspicions were directed towards both of these me as well as her current boyfriend. 20 year old Amber Tuccaro, was last seen alive on August 18,2010. She had left her infant son in the care of her friend and planned to hitchhike into the nearby city of Edmonton for the night. The only clue in Amber’s disappearance is the recording of a telephone call she received while riding in a vehicle with an unknown male just moments after she was last seen. For over 50 years a revolving door of civilian and government investigators have attempted to provide an explanation for the Falcon Lake UFO Incident, yet it remains an enigma. What is known is that in 1967, just months prior to the other famous Canadian UFO event in Shag Harbour, a man stumbled out of the woods in rural Manitoba disoriented, vomiting, and badly burned. This wasn't a bonfire gone wrong or anything to do with alcohol however. The story this man told, and maintained until his death in 1999, was that he encountered a UFO, and got injured in the process. For me, it all started on an average day in November. I woke up, poured a coffee, and swiped open my phone to see what was what in the world. Instead of finding local news and pictures of social media influencer’s breakfast, I was face to face with an agitated mob that seemed to have my email and social media accounts surrounded. Fortunately, it wasn't a lynch mob. In place of torches and pitchforks they all just had their phones out showing me a viral video taken on October 3rd by a hunter out looking for partridge with his wife and grandchild in rural Ontario. The video itself isn't much to look at, it’s little more than a still image of a treeline. It's the sound of the video that makes this special. The hunter, 39 year old Gino Meekis, started filming after being started by a howl unlike any he had never heard before. After sharing the video to Youtube people took notice. Just like Gino, No one could agree on what animal was heard in the video. But, there was one group on the fringes of the discussion who did recognize this almost human howl and they confident they knew what it was. They thought it was Bigfoot and they considered Gino's video proof that there ARE Sasquatch in Northwestern Ontario. Tonetta is the stage name used by a reclusive singer-songwriter and visual artist who since the early 1980s has been recording and sharing his original music and videos. In 2008, he became an international cult celebrity after starting his first YouTube channel containing music and video that often contain explicit sexual content and a unique do it yourself aesthetic. Tonetta’s detractors call his music vile filth, whereas fans call it the work of a pure outsider artist.
