Elisa Lam was a Canadian student at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, who had disappeared under mysterious circumstances while staying at the infamous Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles. When LAPD released the last known video footage of Elisa, the often discussed elevator video, Elisa's disappearance became one of the world's highest profile cases. When Elisa's body was found the case became a go-to topic for web sleuths and members of true crime discussion communities. In this episode of Nighttime, we will be joined by youtuber and podcaster John Lordan to discuss a case he has dedicated significant effort and attention to. Toronto, Ontario is a big city... home to over two million... and a bunch of them are online approaching children with criminal intent. Fortunately, their dark fantasies are a little further out of reach thanks to a vigilante group called the Toronto Predator Poachers. Using fake online accounts and elaborate decoy work, this group helps pull Toronto's child sex predators out of the shadows and into the light. The predator, expecting to meet a child, instead comes face to face with an over 6 foot tall, 200+ lb. man, holding a camera. He's not there to arrest them or harm them physically. What he does do however is make them call their wives or parents to admit what they are up to, and if that wasn't bad enough he also posts videos of the whole thing online and reports them to police. So yeah, it gets quite intense. In this episode of Nighttime we are joined by Matt (the catcher) and Soph (the decoy) and our topic is the many catches of the Toronto Predator Poachers. Snow was on the ground, a chill was in the air, and Christmas was all around. I put on my boots and hat, zipped up my coat, and headed into the cold to check my mailbox. When I opened it, I found some flyers, a gift I had ordered for my mom, and a handful of Christmas cards friends and family who still hold on to the traditional way of staying connected. My grandma scribbled her name on one, my friend Craig sent me his regards along with an updated family photo, but there was one I couldn’t immediately identify that looked a little thicker than the rest. The name on the front of the envelope wasn't that legible, so I opened it still not knowing who exactly it was from. inside, was a very typical Christmas card... decorated with a little church and a stylized font wishing Christmas Blessings. overall very typical… until I opened it. Inside, I saw a card completely covered with barely legible writing, and a separate multipage letter covered with the same scribbled text. Just as I began contemplating who sent such a bizarre card I noticed the only piece of easily legible writing. 𝘔𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘺 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘮𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢 𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘺 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘺𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘺. 𝘮𝘺 𝘊𝘩𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘮𝘢𝘴 𝘣𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴, 𝘈𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘯 𝘓𝘦𝘨𝘦𝘳𝘦 As the colour drains from my face, I realize I'm holding a Christmas card sent to me by one of the world's most horrific serial killers, the Monster of the Miramichi, and now I’m going to share it with you. In this episode of Nighttime, using his own words taken from a Christmas card he sent me. We are going to hear from Allan Legere. In all corners of our country, if you ask the right people, you’ll hear stories of ghosts or monsters that at some time in the area’s history briefly made themselves known. This episode will describe one such case. It will feature a community crippled with fear and overcome by a feeling of defenselessness. A community in which it's most vulnerable were preyed upon by a beast too frightening to be dreamt up. Like many of horror literature's greatest villains, by day this monster hid in the forest that surrounded the village and only at night, under the cover of darkness, would it enter civilization to exercise it's wickedness. But, unlike horror’s many boogeymen and boogeywomen what made this monster so terrifying is that he isn’t a work of fiction... in fact, the community knew exactly who was preying on them. Tonight, In this episode of Nightttime, We will hear the story of an infamous Canadian serial killer who, after a daring prison escape, stalked his community, murdering several elderly citizens while hiding in the dense forest surrounding the region. This is the story of Allan Legere... the Monster of the Miramichi In this episode we are joined by Rick Maclean (Editor of Miramichi leader, Author of Terror) who provides his account of the many twists and turns that unfold during this terrifying story. For as far back as history can tell, inhabitants of Cape Breton Island have found sustenance in our fisheries, our forests, our coal, Steel, and of course tourism. These industries have brought people to Cape Breton from around the world or sent a little bit of Cape Breton to them. But, if we were considering the island’s greatest exports, well that may come as a bit of a surprise. An unassuming Cape Bretoner, with a smile much bigger than his ego, is responsible for some of the world's biggest songs by some of the world's biggest artists. It's fair to say that Gordie Sampson was able to send a taste of Cape Breton Island to more people than our natural industries ever could and he has the Grammys to show for it. After achieving success in Canada as a solo performer, Gordie found his place in writing for others. As it all turned out, his ability to connect clever lyrics with traditional Celtic inspired melody has made him a go to for country music's biggest stars. To name just a few, Gordie’s songs were recorded by: WIllie Nelson, Faith Hill, Keith Urban, Trisha Yearwood, Luke Bryan, Martina MacBride, Lady Antebellum, Brad Paisley, Lee Ann Rymes, Miley Cyrus, Bon Jovi, and perhaps his biggest... the Grammy award winning song by Carrie Underwood 'Jesus Take the Wheel". So needless to say, Gordie has unique insight into the music business and a hell of a lot of stories. In this episode of Nighttime, I'm proud to be joined by Cape Breton's hit maker Gordie Sampson. This story is hard to listen to, but equally so, it's important. We are going to be joined by someone who's personal tragedy has positioned them to become an internationally known activist and advocate against sexualized violence and cyber bullying. Her name is Leah Parsons and what she and her family have been through over the last 7 years... simply put... is horrific. The story starts with the rape of Leah's then 15 year old daughter by a group of young men and continues with a 17 month quest for justice, and odyssey to stop photos of the rape from circulating around Rehteah's school. Obviously, what will be discussing isn't for the faint of heart, but as horrible as it is, you will hear some positives. The crimes against Leah's daughter highlighted significant problems with many of the institutions parents rely to keep their children safe and eventually, this story would the catalyst for change. To prevent something like this from happening again new cyber bullying laws were introduced and sweeping changes were implemented in schools, police departments, and within our mental health services. It's just a shame that Leah's daughter Rehteah had to pay for those changes with her life. In this episode of Nighttime, we will be joined by Leah Parsons and our topic is the life, death, and legacy of her daughter Rehteah Parsons. In this 'Nighttime Live' episode, I am joined by the Operator (host of 911 Calls Podcast) to discuss my favorite 3 minutes of audio EVER. The origin of the audio is a bit of a mystery, but it seems to include two employees of a major Canadian telecommunications company having a very big and very ugly disagreement during an otherwise routine inter company telephone interaction. Donna (who is speaking from a call center in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia) looses her patience with Victor (speaking from a kiosk in a Brampton, Ontario mall) when he seems to be in breach of some sort of task related requirement. For a period of time in the late 1980s, Cape Breton’s Chickie Macphee became one of his island’s most famous and most beloved residents. His notoriety didn’t begin with any great feat, show of skill, or significant act of generosity. I've always found Cemeteries a calming and peaceful place but not everyone is comfortable roaming their twisted paths and especially so under moonlight. If that describes you, you may find this episode a bit uncomfortable at first as roaming around a graveyard is exactly what we are going to do. But, don’t be scared off just yet, I suspect this walk amongst the dead may change the way you view the boneyard. I've called upon Craig Ferguson, a local man who spends a considerable time amongst the dead, to take the lead. He produces a unique project that merges art, journalism, and story Telling called Dead in Halifax. His work starts with a headstone catching his eye and leads to a fact finding mission into the life and dead of the person buried in the ground below. It's like a modern history lesson for goths. In this episode of Nighttime, I'll be meeting with Craig Ferguson at the gates of the Camp Hill Cemetery in Halifax and together we are going to go for a walk amongst the Dead in Halifax. For a period of weeks, in May of 2007, it appeared a serial killer may have been targeting Halifax Nova Scotia’s gay community. When a suspect was identified and arrested at the Mexican - USA border, it turned out to be something all together different. To put it plainly, Glen Race thought he was destroying vampires. To help me talk through the story, and to join in the discussion surrounding the many elements to this case, I've invited my good friend and fellow podcaster Kristi Lee (Canadian True Crime) to join me. When Clarenville RCMP Constable Jim Blackwood responded to a report of an unusual object in the sky, he expected it to be the next in a series of recent reports that all resulted in nothing more than a confused citizen describing a vague light. When he arrived to the scene he found a group of mystified witnesses viewing the still clearly visible object with binoculars. He knew then that this report was unique. The incredible events which unfolded during the roughly two hour long sighting would fuel both an international media whirlwind and a localized UFO craze. Once upon a time, I loved Tim Horton's. I drank their coffee and I ate their fresh baked goods, but those days are gone. The love affair is long over. To put it bluntly, I think they suck now. What puzzles me, is that it wasn't always this way and that's why I'm left with burning questions... When did they lose their way, why did they lose their way, and will they ever get back the magic they used to have? It wasn't until I happened upon a piece of investigative journalism in a MacLean's magazine that the full picture of this betrayal became apparent. The piece was titled "How Tim Horton's lost it's way" and as I read it the veil of marketing that had obscured the slow decline of Tim Horton’s was forcefully pulled away and Canada's dirty secret was exposed. Some of the points raised in that article will be discussed and expanded upon in this episode as in this episode, I'm joined by author and journalist Corey Mintz. In this episode, we are going to come face to face with one of most prosecuted people in Nova Scotia's storied history. Our guest is a criminal so hardened that when I asked him for an estimate on the length of his rap sheet, he simply drew a blank and giggled. But, that's probably for the better as listing the charges this man has faced would be about as interesting, and as exhausting, as reading through the Canadian Criminal Code. But, as you will soon learn, there is much more to it. when the layers of legalese are peeled back this isn't the story of a career criminal. It's the story of a man who simply wanted to hang around at tim horton's parking lot drinking coffee with his friends. The problems started when he lost his license and bought of horse as a way to get around town. If this man on horseback was a can of gasoline... the match that ignited it would be his dispute with the management of his small town Tim Horton. After several instances of his horse answering the call of nature on their property.... He was told that he, nor his chestnut quarter horse were no longer welcome on their property... a demand he refused to obey. Now, nearly 20 years after the events that made him and his horse international news, He is willing to tell his story. In this episode, we are going to be joined by one of the more colourful characters to ever grace Canada's music charts. Our guest is as well known for his awe-inspiring talents on the fiddle as he is for the strange stories and controversy scattered throughout his 30 year career. If you followed Canadian music in the 90s, you know Ashley Macisaac. His 1995 album 'Hi how are you today' went double platinum and in the process helped bring about a sort of renaissance for the fiddle and Celtic music. This episode however won't be about Ashley Macissac's impact on popular music and it won't be about his various public relations missteps that shocked and appalled many of his more traditional fans. Ashley MacIsaac is joining me here on Nighttime to speak publicly for the first time about something very personal and very important to him. This story centers around a famous professional wrestling entertainer, who in 2007 while at the peak of his career, brutally murdered his wife and young son. Why he did it, and what led to this tragedy, has remained the source of speculation. Then, how this was handled by his employer, WWE, is a story all in it’s own. We are going to get into all of it. In this episode of Nighttime we are joined by my good friend (and a life long wrestling fan) Aaron Corbett. Our topic is the rise and fall of the Canadian Crippler, Chris Benoit. 24 year old Cortney Lake was last seen the evening of June 7, 2017 in the area of her Mount Pearl, NL home. At the time of her disappearance, Cortney’s life was in a state somewhere between transition and turmoil. An ex boyfriend had just been released from prison for a series of crimes against her, whereas another ex, the father of her young son, was pressuring her to rekindle the romantic relationship the pair ended years prior. When her whereabouts were unaccounted for, suspicions were directed towards both of these me as well as her current boyfriend. The story that will unfold will be remembered as one of Newfoundland’s darkest crimes. In this episode of Nighttime, I will be using excerpts from a long form interview with Cortney’s mom Lisa Lake. At the time of her disappearance, 27 year old Holly Clark was pursuing her dream to be a professional musician in Hamilton, Ontario. However suddenly, and with little warning, she seemed to find herself on the brink of crisis. On the morning of January 10th, 2020 Holly phoned her parents in Calgary to request help returning home. During the call Holly would share the frightening, yet vague, details of a traumatic experience that led her to spending the prior night running for her life from either a real or imagined threat. It was obvious she needed help but shortly before her father arrived, she walked out of her apartment and into the cold air and pouring rain. In this episode of Nighttime we will again be joined by her past employer, and leader of the search team, Elle to discuss what we’ve learned in the months since Holly’s remains were found. 20 year old Amber Tuccaro, was last seen alive on August 18,2010. She had left her infant son in the care of her friend and planned to hitchhike into the nearby city of Edmonton for the night. The only clue in Amber’s disappearance is the recording of a telephone call she received while riding in a vehicle with an unknown male just moments after she was last seen. In the chilling recording, Amber seems to slowly realize the man is not taking her towards Edmonton but instead onto a series dirt roads… just like the ones her remains would be found on two years later. Our story centers around two Canadians who met on the front lines of the race war militant white supremacists hope to start. On one side, we have a journalist with the Winnipeg Free press named Ryan Thorpe and on the other side, we have Patrik Mathews, a Manitoban who moonlights as a recruiter for a secretive neo-nazi hate group. I say “moonlit” as when not conspiring to overthrow the government and create a white ethnostate, He was known as Master Corporal Patrick Mathews… a combat engineer in the Canadian Military. At least, he was before Ryan Thorpe's investigative journalism outed him. Buckle up for this one. For over 50 years a revolving door of civilian and government investigators have attempted to provide an explanation for the Falcon Lake UFO Incident, yet it remains an enigma. What is known is that in 1967, just months prior to the other famous Canadian UFO event in Shag Harbour, a man stumbled out of the woods in rural Manitoba disoriented, vomiting, and badly burned. This wasn't a bonfire gone wrong or anything to do with alcohol however. The story this man told, and maintained until his death in 1999, was that he encountered a UFO, and got injured in the process. In this episode of Nighttime, Canadian UFO researcher Chris Rutkowksi shares details of the Falcon Lake event and in doing so explains why this event has remained such a major part of Canada's UFO story. For me, it all started on an average day in November. I woke up, poured a coffee, and swiped open my phone to see what was what in the world. Instead of finding local news and pictures of social media influencer’s breakfast, I was face to face with an agitated mob that seemed to have my email and social media accounts surrounded. Fortunately, it wasn't a lynch mob. In place of torches and pitchforks they all just had their phones out showing me a viral video taken on October 3rd by a hunter out looking for partridge with his wife and grandchild in rural Ontario. The video itself isn't much to look at, it’s little more than a still image of a treeline. It's the sound of the video that makes this special. The hunter, 39 year old Gino Meekis, started filming after being started by a howl unlike any he had never heard before. After sharing the video to Youtube people took notice. Just like Gino, No one could agree on what animal was heard in the video. But, there was one group on the fringes of the discussion who did recognize this almost human howl and they confident they knew what it was. They thought it was Bigfoot and they considered Gino's video proof that there ARE Sasquatch in Northwestern Ontario. Tonetta is the stage name used by a reclusive singer-songwriter and visual artist who since the early 1980s has been recording and sharing his original music and videos. In 2008, he became an international cult celebrity after starting his first YouTube channel containing music and video that often contain explicit sexual content and a unique do it yourself aesthetic. Tonetta’s detractors call his music vile filth, whereas fans call it the work of a pure outsider artist. Tonetta is the stage name used by a reclusive singer-songwriter and visual artist who since the early 1980s has been recording and sharing his original music and videos (originally on VHS and cassette). In 2008, he became an international cult celebrity after starting his first YouTube channel containing music and video that often contain explicit sexual content and a unique do it yourself aesthetic. Tonetta’s detractors call his music vile filth whereas fans call it the work of a pure outsider artist. In this episode of Nighttime, I’m joined by my good friend and band mate Aaron Corbett for a discussion surrounding an artist unlike any you've ever heard of. Our Topic is the Toronto based cult musician and artist known around the world as Tonetta. An October phone call inviting Steve Vernon, my favorite local horror author, to appear on Nighttime has become a Halloween tradition. For the fourth year in a row, He agreed to share his tales of terror and bloodshed. The plan we came up with was similar to prior years, but with a few twists. I got the idea during a recent walk through a nearby forest, while lost in both my headphones and the twisting trails, I happened upon an abandoned and long overgrown hunting type shack that I thought would be a perfect spot to drag Steve and my mobile studio to. To take full advantage of the ambiance of an old growth forest, I asked Steve he he would pull some stories from a prior story collection he released called Wicked Woods; Ghost stories from Old New Brunswick. Steve Vernon did not disappointment. In this episode, you will hear two chilling tales from haunted New Brunswick written and read by my friend and my favorite Horror Author, Steve Vernon. Sandy Cove, Nova Scotia, 1863 As far back as recorded history can take us, we see the inhabitants of the land presently called Nova Scotia maintaining a strong connection to the waters that surround them. Forestry, Fishing, Tourism, and recreation. The Atlantic’s waves crash against all aspects of our lives. it’s not a surprise that the Atlantic Ocean also plays a role in many of Nova Scotia's most enduring mysteries. In this this episode, our story involves mysterious strangers arriving to Nova Scotia’s shores by way of the Atlantic Ocean, but in this case they didn't crash land in a UFO, and they seem to bury any treasure. All they did was desert a speechless, legless man on a beach in the Digby area of Nova Scotia. Who he was, why his legs were cut off, and how exactly he came to arrive on the beach... are all questions that have gone unanswered in the 150+ years since his sudden arrival. Tonight, in this episode of Nighttime, we will be joined by author Fraser Mooney Jr. Our topic is Jerome, the mystery man of Sandy Cove. Although Canada is no stranger to murder, madness and mayhem, we have been very fortunate to have largely avoided the type of mass murders and shootings that have become common fixtures in other countries with similar cultures to our own. On April 23, 2018, Younge Street in Downtown Toronto was the setting of an event that many Canadians had taken comfort in thinking could never happen here. 25 year old Alek Minassian hit the gas and jerked the wheel of the rented cube van he was driving forcing the vehicle onto a busy sidewalk. For several city blocks Minassian used the vehicle to target pedestrians, killing 10 and injuring 16. In this episode of Nighttime, I am again joined by my best friend Scott to continue our discussion of the Toronto Van Attack. For the third part in this series, our focus is on the judge's decision in the case against Minassian. **This episode was original released April 29, 2018** Although Canada is no stranger to murder, madness and mayhem, we have been very fortunate to have largely avoided the type of mass murders and shootings that have become common fixtures in other countries with similar values and cultures to our own. Sadly, just days prior to recording this episode Younge Street in Downtown Toronto was the setting of an event that many Canadians take comfort in thinking could never happen here. In this episode, I'll be joined by my best friend Scott to discuss the April 2018 Toronto Van Attack. Our discussion includes the event, the arrest, what is known of the man driving the van, his rumored ideological motivation, and sadly… we will discuss the innocent people killed during this horrible event. The Nightcap after show episodes are typically only available on the premium feed When one imagines the setting for a story involving experimental weapons, international espionage, unexplained aerial anomalies, and cold war anxieties... they probably aren’t picturing a tranquil island in Newfoundland. But, there is no imagining about it, Bell island, Newfoundland, is just that. This all stems from a still unexplained aerial explosion that rocked the skies about the island, and set in motion a series of bizarre events that seemed pulled from the pages of a science fiction novel. The entire ordeal still leaves those who lived through it scratching their heads, but one thing is without question, for a moment in 1978, Canadian and American defense satellites detected more light reflecting from this island than what was seen during the bombing of Hiroshima and we aren’t certain why. In this episode of Nighttime, we are joined by an eye witness to the Bell Island Boom, and the current owner of the Bickford home that was considered to be ground zero, Cynthia Bickford Links: Access the premium feed: https://www.patreon.com/nighttimepodcast 1978 CBC documentary on the event The Invisible Machine (2004 documentary on the Event) William Shatner hosted syfy channel documentary Contact: Website: https://www.nighttimepodcast.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/NightTimePod Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NightTimePod Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nighttimepod Email: [email protected] Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/nighttimepodcast Premium Feed: https://www.patreon.com/Nighttimepodcast Learn more about your ad choices. A very small number of Nighttime listeners have served on a jury, but many more know someone who has. Regardless which side you fall on, chances are the trial involved was fairly mundane and unremarkable... but that’s not always how it happens. Think of someone you know, perhaps a painfully innocent aunt. What happens when they get assigned to a case involving some of darkest evidence imaginable? how do they get through it? how do they cope? and who picks up the pieces after the verdict is delivered? Very few are better positioned to answer those questions then our guest Mark Farrant. In 2014, a letter arrived at Mark’s door indicating he was in a pool to serve on the jury for an upcoming murder trial, and to put it simply, he hasn't been the same man since. The trial was that of Farshad Badakshan, a man accused in the horrifically brutal killing of his girlfriend. The graphic details Mark was immersed in had left him with the crippling symptoms of PTSD and to make matters worse, laws that serve to provide jurors privacy have made it nearly impossible for mark to get treatment. This has been the fuel for one of Canada's fiercest advocates for the rights of Canadian jurors. In this episode, Mark will share both his experiences with the dark side of Jury duty and his efforts to make things better for future jurors.
