For a period of weeks, in May of 2007, it appeared a serial killer may have been targeting Halifax Nova Scotia’s gay community. When a suspect was identified and arrested at the Mexican - USA border, it turned out to be something all together different. To put it plainly, Glen Race thought he was destroying vampires. To help me talk through the story, and to join in the discussion surrounding the many elements to this case, I've invited my good friend and fellow podcaster Kristi Lee (Canadian True Crime) to join me. When Clarenville RCMP Constable Jim Blackwood responded to a report of an unusual object in the sky, he expected it to be the next in a series of recent reports that all resulted in nothing more than a confused citizen describing a vague light. When he arrived to the scene he found a group of mystified witnesses viewing the still clearly visible object with binoculars. He knew then that this report was unique. The incredible events which unfolded during the roughly two hour long sighting would fuel both an international media whirlwind and a localized UFO craze. Once upon a time, I loved Tim Horton's. I drank their coffee and I ate their fresh baked goods, but those days are gone. The love affair is long over. To put it bluntly, I think they suck now. What puzzles me, is that it wasn't always this way and that's why I'm left with burning questions... When did they lose their way, why did they lose their way, and will they ever get back the magic they used to have? It wasn't until I happened upon a piece of investigative journalism in a MacLean's magazine that the full picture of this betrayal became apparent. The piece was titled "How Tim Horton's lost it's way" and as I read it the veil of marketing that had obscured the slow decline of Tim Horton’s was forcefully pulled away and Canada's dirty secret was exposed. Some of the points raised in that article will be discussed and expanded upon in this episode as in this episode, I'm joined by author and journalist Corey Mintz. In this episode, we are going to come face to face with one of most prosecuted people in Nova Scotia's storied history. Our guest is a criminal so hardened that when I asked him for an estimate on the length of his rap sheet, he simply drew a blank and giggled. But, that's probably for the better as listing the charges this man has faced would be about as interesting, and as exhausting, as reading through the Canadian Criminal Code. But, as you will soon learn, there is much more to it. when the layers of legalese are peeled back this isn't the story of a career criminal. It's the story of a man who simply wanted to hang around at tim horton's parking lot drinking coffee with his friends. The problems started when he lost his license and bought of horse as a way to get around town. If this man on horseback was a can of gasoline... the match that ignited it would be his dispute with the management of his small town Tim Horton. After several instances of his horse answering the call of nature on their property.... He was told that he, nor his chestnut quarter horse were no longer welcome on their property... a demand he refused to obey. An ex boyfriend had just been released from prison for a series of crimes against her, whereas another ex, the father of her young son, was pressuring her to rekindle the romantic relationship the pair ended years prior. Taylor Mitchell was a singer and songwriter from Toronto. After the encouraging reviews of her debut album ‘For Your Consideration’ Taylor was seen as an up and coming star. After spending a Friday night out with a friend, 22 year old Tess Richey failed to return home. After spending a Friday night out with a friend, 22 year old Tess Richey failed to return home. On March 22, 1992, Sydney Nova Scotia was expecting it’s worst snowstorm of the year. With over 30 centimeters expected to fall Doug Dupe encouraged his wife Marie to not take any chances by going in to work. 20 year old Amber Tuccaro, was last seen alive on August 18,2010. She had left her infant son in the care of her friend and planned to hitchhike into the nearby city of Edmonton for the night. The only clue in Amber’s disappearance is the recording of a telephone call she received while riding in a vehicle with an unknown male just moments after she was last seen. In the chilling recording, Amber seems to slowly realize the man is not taking her towards Edmonton but instead onto a series dirt roads… just like the ones her remains would be found on two years later. For over 50 years a revolving door of civilian and government investigators have attempted to provide an explanation for the Falcon Lake UFO Incident, yet it remains an enigma. For me, it all started on an average day in November. I woke up, poured a coffee, and swiped open my phone to see what was what in the world. Instead of finding local news and pictures of social media influencer’s breakfast, I was face to face with an agitated mob that seemed to have my email and social media accounts surrounded. Fortunately, it wasn't a lynch mob. In place of torches and pitchforks they all just had their phones out showing me a viral video taken on October 3rd by a hunter out looking for partridge with his wife and grandchild in rural Ontario. The video itself isn't much to look at, it’s little more than a still image of a treeline. It's the sound of the video that makes this special. The hunter, 39 year old Gino Meekis, started filming after being started by a howl unlike any he had never heard before. After sharing the video to Youtube people took notice. Just like Gino, No one could agree on what animal was heard in the video. But, there was one group on the fringes of the discussion who did recognize this almost human howl and they confident they knew what it was. They thought it was Bigfoot and they considered Gino's video proof that there ARE Sasquatch in Northwestern Ontario. An October phone call inviting Steve Vernon, my favorite local horror author, to appear on Nighttime has become a Halloween tradition. For several city blocks Minassian used the vehicle to target pedestrians, killing 10 and injuring 16. A very small number of Nighttime listeners have served on a jury, but many more know someone who has. Regardless which side you fall on, chances are the trial involved was fairly mundane and unremarkable... but that’s not always how it happens. Think of someone you know, perhaps a painfully innocent aunt. What happens when they get assigned to a case involving some of darkest evidence imaginable? how do they get through it? how do they cope? and who picks up the pieces after the verdict is delivered? Very few are better positioned to answer those questions then our guest Mark Farrant. In 2014, a letter arrived at Mark’s door indicating he was in a pool to serve on the jury for an upcoming murder trial, and to put it simply, he hasn't been the same man since. The trial was that of Farshad Badakshan, a man accused in the horrifically brutal killing of his girlfriend. The graphic details Mark was immersed in had left him with the crippling symptoms of PTSD and to make matters worse, laws that serve to provide jurors privacy have made it nearly impossible for mark to get treatment. This has been the fuel for one of Canada's fiercest advocates for the rights of Canadian jurors. In life Holly Bartlett was a conqueror. Born with a condition that would lead to complete vision loss, Holly refused to allow her blindness to prevent her from living life to it's fullest. She had an active social life, a career, an education, and a network of friends and family that looked to her as an inspiration. But, all the good things that were happening in Holly's life came to a screeching halt on a cold night in March of 2010. After spending a night out with friends, celebrating her upcoming graduation, Holly was found gravely injured in a nearly inaccessible area underneath a downtown Halifax bridge. the police investigation into the circumstance that would lead to her injuries, and in turn her death, was surprisingly fast. The Police believed the death was accidental, however... it seems they are about the only ones that feel that way. Holly's friends, family, and supporters have been very vocal about their dissatisfaction with the police investigation of Holly's death. An investigation many call at best, flawed and at worst, derailed by an ignorance about living with blindness. **This is a rewritten and remastered version of a 2015 episode** In 2015, When I first launched Nighttime, One of the first requests I made to listeners was for story ideas that took place in, or in some way involved, the forest. The first response I received, lead me to this episodes story. Myles MacKenzie sent me an email sharing the story of an animal encounter he and some high school friends had in the woods of Pictou County Nova Scotia. Actually, "Animal Encounter" is a bit of and understatement. Don't roll your eyes before you hear the story but, Myles and his friends, they believe they encountered the legendary Bigfoot. It happened back in 2003, when Myles and a few members of his track team were running sprints in the dense woods of the Green hill provincial park. Whatever the group encountered, it wasn't like anything they nor their coach had experienced before or since. Nor was nothing they would ever forget. When 20 year old Ryan Shtuka stepped out of his comfort zone and embarked on an adventure with a close friend their plan wasn't anything risky or dangerous.. it was quite simple. Tragically, Daniel would only get a handful of weeks to make things happen as his time in Victoria, and the dreams that brought him there, would be snuffed out by the manager of the convenience store Daniel had taken a job at. That manager, Josh Bredo, befriended Daniel and weaved an intricate web of lies that played off Daniel's kindness, generosity, and his trusting nature. The lies would finally catch up to them both when Daniel showed up what he thought was Josh's condo, in what he expected to be an orientation for a new career as a legal secretary for Josh's mothers law firm. Instead, Daniel found betrayal. There was no orientation, no job... there wasn't even a law firm. There was just the manager of the 7/11 eleven, a man Daniel thought to be a friend... but he couldn't have been more wrong. After releasing the prior episodes in this series, outlining my son's ufo event and the MUFON organization, I've heard from listeners curious if (and to what extent) the Canadian government is involved in the reporting and investigation of UFO events. When considering the next topic to cover, I turned to the UFOs Above Canada facebook group for recommendations. As I took note of the many great ideas the group members shared, something else that caught my attention. Two people from opposite corners of Canada posted details of their recent UFO sightings. The reports were different in nearly every way, but had one commonality. Each solicited help identifying the anomalous object and requested advice on where next to turn. Immediately this episode's topic, Reporting a UFO, was the obvious next step, but I never expected it to show up on my doorstep the way it did. Just as I began research for this episode, the gods of podcasting and whomever controls the strange objects in the sky saw to it that I would get a person lesson in UFO reporting.
