She kept seeing the same inflammatory-based conditions turning up. Terry Wahls inspired Pauline to look at nutrition at a much deeper level. Pauline loves to think about how nutrition can improve longevity and protect us against chronic disease. [07:20] Being More Preventative When It Comes To Covid We can improve our immune function and make it more robust and more reactive when it needs to be. At the start of the pandemic, there was a lot of skepticism around vitamin D and zinc. Plus, there was a lot of skepticism around supplements, food, and the impact of nutrition. Now, it seems to be much more readily accepted in the conventional medical community. [17:30] Dual-Fuel Burning: What It Means and How To Achieve It Ketones have been around for as long as we've been around as humans. We can burn two different types of fuel: ketones and glucose. It protects our body from essentially eating our muscles and ourselves to death if we go two or three days without food. Dual-fuel gives us the ability to go for long periods of time without food. We're carrying our own little refrigerator of food that we can access at any point. Dual-fuel keeps our mood stable. [21:00] It’s Incredible That We Have A Metabolically Flexible Body Our brain is designed to be able to utilize glucose or ketones. However, the brain has a preference for ketones. If we eat some sweet potatoes, we will mop up that glucose and use it immediately. If you don’t eat carbs, then you will utilize the fat stored in your body. Pauline will fast from 6 pm to lunchtime the next day. She loves to have a core level of ketones. We have a brain that's becoming increasingly insulin resistant. Ghrelin spikes very predictably around when we usually eat. Our body will produce ghrelin, very predictably, at nine o'clock, in anticipation of us having our breakfast. Your ghrelin is trained to spike. If you want to eliminate breakfast, then you should start to shift your ghrelin. Start moving your eating times 45 minutes back. That way, you're training that ghrelin spike to ease off rather than stopping altogether slowly. It will be an easier transition. Streptococcus loves glucose. Elevated proteobacteria is another sign of an unhealthy gut. There’s a study suggesting that people who drink skim milk have a statistically significant increase in Parkinson's risk. [18:30] Glyphosate: The Main Problem That Is Disrupting Your Microbiome The number one thing disrupting the gut microbiome is glyphosate. Most people do not understand how much the use of glyphosate has increased in the last thirty years. Glyphosate changes the biochemistry of the plant. Also, it changes the biochemistry of the soil, which changes the nutritional uptake of a plant. So, you need to eat as organic as possible. Also, make your legislators aware of the glyphosate problems. [23:55] Other Things You Should Avoid To Improve Your Gut Health Avoid high fructose corn syrup. Highly processed sugars will have a significant impact on your microbiome and overall health. The highest consumption of high fructose corn syrup is usually in poor populations. [01:30] When You’re Scared of Fat, You’ll Be Hungry For Processed Foods We are kept on an island of unhealthy seed oils by traumas around saturated fat and cholesterol. When you’re scared of traditional fats, then that opens you up to being hungry for whatever the processed food companies want to feed you. Processed foods always have a lot of seed oils in them. Seed oils are truly toxic. [06:50] The Differences Between Monounsaturated, Saturated, and Polyunsaturated Fats Monounsaturated is the main fatty acid in olive oil. The most common fats in seed oils are polyunsaturated. Saturated fats are the most common fat in coconut oil. It’s also the most prevalent fat in butter. The difference between these fats chemically is the stability to heat. Saturated fats are the most stable and have an antioxidant effect. Polyunsaturated fatty acids oxidize and create oxidative stress. [12:40] The Metabolic Pathway For How Dietary Linoleic Acid Omega-6 Ends Up In The Membranes and Inner Fat Cells You swallow a potato chip, and it gets broken up in your stomach a few hours later. Then it shows up in your intestinal tract where enzymes from your pancreas break apart the fats in there. Most of the fats are in the form of triglycerides. We have to use lipases in our pancreas to break it up. From there, it goes into the intestinal cells. Later, it gets picked up from your liver. The liver takes it all apart and repackages it in this thing called low-density lipoprotein. [21:50] How Seed Oils Can Stay In Your Body For Extended Periods of Time Linoleic acid in our fat cells has a long half-life. Body fat is stuck with us until we use it. If you’ve been eating seed oils your whole life, it will take a couple of years for it to be gone. If you aren’t metabolically healthy or fit, you shouldn’t do extended fasts because they're releasing so many pro-inflammatory oils all at once. [27:35] Should I Avoid Peanut Oil or Eat More Peanut Oil? Peanut oil is okay if it's unrefined. In fact, peanut oil is actually good because it’s a traditional fat. She was being prescribed Metformin, and Angela had insulin resistance. After doing research, Angela started to understand that there was a connection between PCOS and what she ate. When Angela had the surgery for PCOS, she found out about her endometriosis. After having three children, Angela realized there is a connection between the brain, the body, and the impact on your immune system. [06:30] Advice For Dealing With Depression The first thing you need is acceptance. In life, the only thing you can be certain of is change. Anything you can do to create peace in your life will be helpful to you. If you want to run away from yourself, how are you going to sit with yourself? Work on dealing with small moments first. [10:40] The Brain and Gut Connection: Depression Is Linked To Leaky Gut About 90% of serotonin is made in the gut. You can help your gut to create more serotonin. Aligning with your circadian rhythm will also improve your brain. Natural light from the sun will significantly improve your circadian rhythm and allow you to get more sleep at night. Women are depleted of vital nutrients, particularly things like DHA in the brain. It takes a woman two years to recover from pregnancy. [14:10] How You Can Reverse Your PCOS For Good PCOS is a syndrome and is related to insulin resistance. Carbs, stress, and not sleeping will raise your blood sugar. Some people are genetically more carb sensitive. Having protein and healthy fats are really key things that make you feel better. If you have too many carbs, you will feel quite foggy. Another thing that improves insulin sensitivity is strength training. [21:30] Sleep Is An Essential Pillar of Health Sleep is going to make everything else in your life easier. In Angela’s corporate job, people would brag about only getting three hours of sleep at night. Most people need seven or eight hours of sleep. You are compromising your health and the way you look when you get less than six hours of sleep at night. [25:35] Tips For Getting Better Sleep At Night How well you sleep tonight is going to be changed by what you did this morning. Get outside early in the morning. That way, you're really regulating the cortisol and melatonin cycle. Red light therapy is also a beneficial tool. Another tip for getting better sleep at night is limiting your exposure to blue lights. [31:10] Hormones: Know When To Dial Back Your Stressors Make sure you have a nutrient-rich diet and you are not constantly stressing your body out. [01:10] How Tara Started Unapologetically Honoring What Was Best For Her Weight has been an issue for Tara since the third grade. Being a stay-at-home mom was definitely not aligned with Tara’s personality. She felt sad and depressed as a stay-at-home mom. Tara started weightlifting because the gym by her house only had weights and treadmills. After lifting weights for eight months, Tara looked exactly the same. So, she decided to switch her nutrition – she went from 40% body fat to 11% body fat. Then, Tara found keto. She felt healthy in both her mind and her body. How you see yourself matters way more than how everyone else sees you. [17:30] Why You Need To Align With Your Truth Most people know that they need to stop exercising and sleep more. If you have hypothyroidism, you're super inflamed, your CRP is off the charts, and you're exhausted, then yes, you need to sleep more! Training is inflammatory, and if you’re already inflamed, there will be problems. You already know what you need to do; listen to your body. Trust your feelings. [21:15] Why You Don’t Want To Be In Ketosis For Your Entire Life If you love being in ketosis, you can stay in it for as long as you want. If keto doesn’t feel as good as it used to, then you may want to switch things up. Keto impacts our neurotransmitters and our mental health. When you eat a diet that is mostly fat and protein, your body will favor dopamine production. When you eat a diet that's mostly carbs and protein, you will favor serotonin production. If you're not eating carbs, you're not going to favor serotonin production as much. One of the reasons you should carb cycle is to improve your emotions and mood. [31:20] Guess What? Insulin Isn’t The Enemy! If you don’t have high blood sugar, then insulin isn’t the enemy. Insulin is an energy shuttling hormone. It takes glucose and places it in our bodies. We can store anywhere from 350 up to 800 grams of carbohydrates in our liver and muscles. Athletes can eat a lot of carbohydrates and not be obese because of the energy they are using. If you aren’t exercising, your body will store carbohydrates as fat storage. [36:00] Tara Always Trains When She Is Fasted – Here’s Why Tara always trains fasted; it’s great for your metabolism. If you are healthy, you should be able to train fasted in the morning. If you can’t train fasted, then you have some work to do with your blood sugar regulation. By the time he was 42, Dr. Tom started to have vision problems. Tom had a cataract. An asymmetrical cataract in a 42-year-old guy is unusual. After doing some research, Dr. Tom saw that lead poisoning could trigger his health issues. When Dr. Tom tested himself for lead poisoning, he had the highest levels of lead that he had ever seen. Tom grew up one block from the Ford assembly line with no government regulations for heavy metal filtration. He was sucking in a lot of lead as a kid. [11:25] You Don’t Feel Well Because You Are Eating An Unsuitable Diet Many people are attracted to a diet when they notice they feel better from it. Joe eats a low-carb and meat-based diet. Genetics has something to say about how people digest carbs. Some genes are related to how people interact with their diet. Many genes are related to how people process fats. [18:05] About The Sleep Deficit and What Problems Joe Will See With Sleep Sleep is an art. Sleep is something that people have to be conscious of and not take for granted. There's a lot of things that could go wrong with sleep. Some problems that you could be having with your sleep: Not enough REM Not enough slow-wave Waking up in the middle of the night Having to pee Not getting a good rhythm Waking up from the light too early Light in the room at night Poor temperature Eating too late As you can see, so many things can go wrong with your sleep. If you don’t sleep well, you are not going to feel well. If you aren’t tracking your sleep, you will never know. [22:55] Light Exposure Is Great For Feeling More Productive If you don’t go outside during the day, you aren’t going to feel as good. Joe gets at least three hours of light a day. When he gets light, he notices an impact. You need at least two hours a day minimum. The more light you get each day, the better off you are going to be. Don’t wear your sunglasses! If you don’t get a lot of sun exposure, red light therapy can be the next best option. [29:30] How Unhappiness and Stress Can Affect Your Health Journey One of the main contributors affecting your longevity and health has to do with stress. The people who live longer deal with stress a lot better. Stress really is detrimental to the body in many ways. If you don't have good personal relationships, that can cause a lot of stress. People can choose to go into Chinese medicine or go into Western medicine. People who go into Chinese medicine also have to learn the whole Western medicine system. She was given 3 to 6 months to live, even with treatment. She was filled with ascites, metastatic lesions, crippled in extreme pain and nausea, had infections simmering, severe malnourishment, and muscle wasting. Her doctors told her that chemo and surgery wouldn’t help her advanced cancer. The diagnosis of terminal cancer suddenly shook her awake and asked her point-blank if she wanted to live or die. It had taken countless doctors over six months to stop making assumptions and defaulting to writing scripts from A (anxiolytics) to Z (Zithromax). Dr. Nasha was forced to explore alternative methods. The mitochondria can use oxygen for respiration. 90 plus percent of all the energy our bodies use comes from the mitochondria. However, they need oxygen to work. If the mitochondria are deprived of oxygen for too long, they will die. [21:20] What Is Homeostasis In The Human Body? What's the underlying mechanism of health and the loss of health? Basically, it comes back to homeostasis. Homeostasis is simply balanced and harmonious body chemistry. If you're looking at the blood, one of the prime indicators of homeostasis is blood sugar level. Every cell of our body is an electromagnet, and we are electrochemical, energetic organisms. Manmade electricity will interfere with and conflict with our homeostasis. Stress of any kind is going to at least temporarily upset homeostasis. If it's something that your body can adapt to, it will make your body stronger. For instance, exercise is a stress that will make your body stronger. No matter how healthy food is, if you can't digest it, then it's a poison. The most direct thing a person can do to get control back of their body and support homeostasis is to stop eating. Increase the time that you’re in homeostasis by increasing your window of fasting. [47:30] Consuming Baking Soda To Get Carbon Dioxide Production Start with half a teaspoon of baking soda. Eventually, increase it to a teaspoon. If you have diarrhea, then you did too much. Plus, Gary Taubes inspired him. Sam was really surprised to learn that that cancer was associated with diabetes, insulin resistance, obesity, and cardiovascular disease. He wanted to dig further on the connection between cancer and metabolic disease. [02:10] The Nazis Protected Warburg For His Cancer Research In 1923, Warburg makes this famous discovery called the Warburg Effect. Cancer cells take up a lot more glucose than other cells and burn it without oxygen; they ferment it, just like microorganisms do. Warburg also has made other discoveries about how cells breathe and use oxygen. He wins the Nobel Prize in 1931. In 1933, the Nazis come along. Despite having a Jewish father and being openly gay, the Nazis protected Warburg because they were interested in his cancer research. [06:50] Warburg’s Studies Started To Disappear After The War After the war, Warburg’s cancer research really starts to disappear. Australia in the 1950s famously discovered the structure of DNA. Eventually, we had a new sort of genetic understanding of cancer where we can now identify specific mutations. So, how cells take up glucose and shift their metabolism was considered irrelevant because of the study of genetics. Warburg’s studies take peoeple back to diet, and there’s a huge bias against taking diet seriously. [12:20] What Sugar Does To Promote Cancer Growth If cancer is about these metabolic shifts inside of a cell, what is it about the way we eat that affects the way a cell eats? In America, one out of three women are diagnosed with cancer within their lifetime. For men, it's about one in two. Cancer is closely linked to obesity. 13 of the deadliest cancers have been solidly linked to obesity. Sam wanted to know if obesity was causing cancer or if something was driving both. Elevated levels of the hormone insulin are responsible for obesity and give microscopic cancers a chance to grow and thrive. What is it about our diet that causes insulin to rise? Sugar! The increase in sugar consumption maps pretty closely to the rise of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. [00:45] How Bitten Became An Expert on Sugar Addiction Growing up, Bitten was obsessed with sugar cubes, chocolate, and ice cream. In nursing school, Bitten learned that you suppress your appetite if you smoke. So that's why she started smoking. Then, Bitten became an alcoholic. Addiction is about the brain and how your brain reacts to substances. At age 33, Bitten fell in love with addiction medicine. Bitten knew that she was using ice cream and chocolate the same way she would use alcohol. [13:00] Addiction Is All About What Is Happening In Your Brain You can be addicted to something with just small amounts. Addiction is all about what is going on in your brain. You don’t have to eat a lot or drink a lot to be an addict. As time goes on, you will increase how much you are drinking or eating. Each drug that comes into your life, you become addicted to faster and faster. [15:10] How To Identify Whether or Not Your Addiction Is Real There’s a difference between harmful use and addiction. You need to figure out which one you have because there will be different treatments. Harmful users are emotional eaters. They eat when they are sad, happy, stressed, etc. There are all kinds of reasons why people will overeat. Ask a harmful user, “why?” There will be an answer. You can’t ask “why” to addict because it's a primary illness; it doesn't have a cause. Instead, you need to ask addicts how you can help them. [00:40] Why Dr. Ifland Was Inspired to Start A Career In Processed Food Addiction Ifland had two pregnancies back-to-back. After that, she became a yo-yo dieter. She would try only to eat 1200 calories a day. However, this was making her processed food addiction worse. There are court documents that reveal companies took the tobacco addiction model and transferred it to sugar for children. It's not normal to think about food when you're not hungry. Americans think about food obsessively. After ditching processed foods, Dr. Ifland got rid of her brain fog, bloating, and a sinus infection. Plus, she was losing two pounds a week. Over 70% of the country in the US is now overweight or obese. Americans are deeply addicted to processed foods, and they don’t even know about it. [12:25] You Need To Associate Processed Foods With The Pain You Feel Just because everyone is eating something, that doesn’t mean you should eat it too. You need to associate certain foods with the pain you feel from them. For instance, “I don’t eat that because it gives me a headache.” You want to retrain brain cells to associate foods with the pain you feel. [16:55] You Can Addict Any Human To Any Substance If You Get Them Young Enough Smoking used to be the leading cause of preventable death globally. Now, diet-related diseases are the leading cause of death in the world. Smoking and diets are based on the same business model. The business model goes like this: Advertising Availability Affordability Young age of onset Hidden addictive product formulation The younger someone is when you addict them, the harder it will be for them to overcome the addiction. [32:20] Overeating Is An Addiction Done To You By The Food Industry It takes years to go to a social situation and not be bothered by people eating processed foods. The conformance tribe is significantly activated by food and by people you know well. The better you know a person, the more likely they will be able to trigger you into eating something bad. Today, I am lucky to have here with me, a specialist in Weight Management and Bariatric Surgery for adults and adolescents, Dr. Robert Cywes. He has been doing bariatric surgery for 18 years, performing over 8,000 surgeries. This is an episode that originally aired on March 2020, and it was so good we decided to re-release it here today. Dr. Cywes’ medical training began in Cape Town, South Africa, where he received his medical degree from The University of Cape Town. In 1989, Dr. Cywes moved to North America and completed a year-long residency in Pediatric Surgery at Ohio State University’s Columbus Children’s Hospital. After completing his pediatric surgery fellowship at the University of Michigan’s C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, Dr. Cywes was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Pediatric and Fetal Surgery at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee where he did hepatic stem cell research. During this time, Dr. Cywes became increasingly interested in adolescent obesity and the impact of the liver and metabolic syndrome on young patients. Dr. Cywes’ research led to a comprehensive understanding of the toxicity of chronic excessive carbohydrate consumption as the primary cause of obesity and so-called obesity-related co-morbidities, and he became interested in developing a clinical program to treat obese patients using this knowledge. Dr. Cywes relocated to Jacksonville, Florida where he joined the Department of Pediatric Surgery at the Nemours Children’s Clinic and Wolfson Children’s Hospital. This led to a national meeting in Jacksonville where guidelines for adolescent obesity surgery were established. Dr. Cywes established JSAPA to continue his work in both adolescent and adult obesity treatment and surgery, and in 2013 opened a practice in Palm Beach County, Florida. He now works with a highly experienced team of professionals from a variety of medical sub-specialties to better care for obese patients. He has developed the practice into an internationally recognized Center of Excellence for obesity surgery. The practice uses a cognitive behavioral therapy approach that addresses carbohydrate addiction, along with bariatric surgery, to help patients manage their obesity long term. Addicts are usually not able to see how bad it is within themselves. He moved to Canada, where he completed his general surgery residency and specialized in Minimally Invasive Surgery at the University of Toronto. Also, Dr. Cywes earned a Ph.D. in Liver Carbohydrate Metabolism and the effect of glucose metabolism on liver transplant immunology. Cywes learned that the body doesn’t need to run on sugar. In fact, it prefers a keto method of running. He also learned that fatty liver doesn’t come from the consumption of fat. It happens from infusing insulin and sugar. [10:00] About LDL LDL is a complex molecule. It’s a truck on the road transporting fat on your body. LDL will lay down fat over an injury. HDL will come along and remove the fat. LDL is not causing the injury; it’s desperately trying to heal the injury. Think of the liver like a subdivision. You have all the houses which are the different cells. Tiny roads that go to each house. Think about a bunch of garbage that blocks the road. You can’t get food and oxygen downstream to those cells. Eventually, those cells will die. As you infuse sugar into the liver, you will see that swelling. [14:15] The Difference Between Ketosis and Diabetic Ketoacidosis The difference between ketosis and diabetic ketoacidosis is 5.5 – 6 grams of sugar. It’s half to one gram difference. It’s an incredibly small difference. An apple has 25 grams of sugar in it. That’s a five-fold increase in blood sugar. Think about how resilient the body is to take sugar out of the bloodstream. [16:15] Flaws With Conventional Approaches to Diabetes Nothing fixes diabetes. Drugs just slow down the process. Once someone goes on the drugs, they are told to eat sugar. There is a misconception that the body has to have sugar. If you don’t have carbs going in, then you are not going to have the type 2 effect. If you manage your blood sugar tightly, you don’t have insulin resistance. Chronic carbohydrate consumption will cause resistance. If the body protects itself by resistance, then it

During her research, Nina came across studies pointing out the flaws in a low-fat diet. However, so many scientists at universities were terrified to talk to Nina about fat. Why? Because people in the food industry were paid to give scientists a hard time. Nina realized there was something really wrong going on here that had such enormous implications. Nutrition science from the very beginning has been heavily influenced by the food industry. For instance, the vegetable oil industry wanted to go after people for attacking vegetable oils in any way. You see the same tactics happening today on social media. [08:55] Polyunsaturated Fats vs. Saturated Fats vs. Monounsaturated Fats Fatty acids are long carbon chains. Poly means many. Polyunsaturated fats have many double bonds. Each time there's a double bond in the chain, it kinks the chain. Some examples of polyunsaturated fats: Corn oil Safflower oil Sunflower oil Canola oil Monounsaturated fats are the same carbon chain but with one double bond. If you want to use oil, it’s better to use olive oil because it only has one double bond. Saturated means that the carbon chain is statured with hydrogen, and there is no double bond. It is a flat chain, and it makes a solid like butter. Saturated fats are actually the best for cooking, and they're the healthiest for eating because they do not oxidize or cause inflammation. [17:55] What Went Wrong In The 1950s With Ancel Keys and President Eisenhower The idea that fat, cholesterol, and animal foods are bad for health began in the 1950s. The US was really in a panic over the rising tide of heart disease, which had been virtually nonexistent in the early 1900s. In the 1930s, heart disease became the number one killer. A panic started when President Eisenhower himself had a heart attack in 1955. Eisenhower’s doctor was convinced by Ancel Keys that saturated fats and dietary cholesterol cause heart disease. Plus, Ancel Keys got his ideas adopted by the American Heart Association. Ancel came out with a statement saying to avoid saturated fat and cholesterol in order to prevent heart attacks. We are still dealing with this in 2021. [23:00] Why Are Seed Oils Approved by the American Heart Association? How is it possible for the American Heart Association to continue to ignore so much scientific literature? More than 20 papers published in the field have concluded that we got it wrong on saturated fats. There is no data to justify the authorities' limits on these seed oils. Getting burnt is not good for your skin. Regular sun exposure will cause DNA damage to the skin. Plus, it can contribute to faster aging. Dr. Killen says to put sunscreen on your face. [07:50] Getting A Healthy Balance of Autophagy and mTOR Through Fasting Even with a few hours of fasting, you can start to see increased stem cell production. With longer fasts, you will have more effects systemically on stem cells. With fasting, we see an increase in autophagy and cellular cleanup. The best part of fasting is that it’s free! [12:15] Exercise For Anti-Aging: How Often and How Intense Should Your Workouts Be? You need at least three or four days of heavy lifting. Weights are really important for creating hormones like testosterone and growth hormones. Heavy lifting exercises should be at least thirty minutes to an hour. Plus, you should do thirty minutes of aerobic activity a day. [13:20] Antiseptic Mouthwash Is Bad For You: Dr. Killen Explains The Problem Antiseptic mouthwash kills the bacteria in the mouth. When there are no bacteria in your mouth, it prevents you from making nitric oxide from food. Nitric oxide is essential for sexual health and erections. If you’re using antiseptic mouthwash and you’re taking an antacid, it can decrease your sexual function. [19:00] The Role That High Glucose Levels Can Play on Your Sexual Function Glucose will create inflammation. You want to have good blood flow to your sexual organs. If you have chronic inflammation, then you will have a lack of blood flow going to your genitalia. Hormones like testosterone will also be affected by high sugar levels. Dr Goran is a native of Glasgow, Scotland, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Manchester, UK (1986) and has previously served on the faculty of Medicine at the University of Vermont (1991 to 1994), the Department of Nutrition Sciences at UAB (1994 to 1999), and the Department of Preventive Medicine at USC (1999 to 2018) prior to joining Childrens Hospital of Los Angeles. His research has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health and other Foundations for the past 30 years and he has published over 350 professional peer-reviewed articles and reviews. He is the Editor of the “Childhood Obesity: Causes, Consequences and Intervention Approaches” published in 2017, co-editor of “Dietary Sugars and Health”published in late 2014, and currently serves as Editor-in-Chief for Pediatric Obesity. He has been the recipient of a number of scientific awards for his research and teaching, including: The Nutrition Society Medal for Research (1996), The Lilly Award for Scientific Achievement from The Obesity Society (2006), The Bar-Or Award for Excellence in Pediatric Obesity Research, from The Obesity Society (2009), the TOPS award for contributions to obesity research from The Obesity Society (2014), and the Rank Prize Lecture in Nutrition (2018). You can either exercise too little, or you can stress your body too much. People want to exercise when they're sick; however, your body’s ability to adapt to stress is very low during sickness. If you feel tired the next day, then you are doing too much exercise. You need to get your body to adapt to higher levels of stress. [16:40] Examples of Physical Hormetins That Will Create Stress These are examples of hormetins that will create stress: Heat has been shown to mimic the effects of exercise on the body. You get the most amount of deep sleep when your body is two degrees cooler. The probability of getting the deepest sleep is in that first half when it's getting cooler. 98% of your weight loss is going to happen during deep sleep. He attributed it to working out a lot and being super active. Eventually, Dr. Martone ended up in the emergency room with a herniated disc. After looking at thousands of x-rays, Dr. Martone can tell what position people sleep in. Martone realized that his back pain was a result of his sleep posture. In the spine, you’re supposed to have a curve in your neck. If you’re using a pillow in the wrong position, then it can flatten the curve. [08:00] Is It True That The Best Sleep Position Is On Your Side? The best sleeping position is on your back. There’s a study that shows side sleeping is best for lymphatic drainage. When you're horizontal, your body actually heals at night. Lymphatic drainage will detoxify the neural tissue in the body. The nervous system is the most important system of the human body; your spine protects that nervous system. So, we should be focusing on our spinal structure when sleeping. [12:45] Wolff’s Law and Davis’s Law Will Determine How Your Body Adapts If you constantly stress the tissue, the body will adapt by building more tissue. Wolff’s Law states that if you don’t use it, then you lose it. If you sit in a chair all day long, your brain will atrophy. Davis’s Law states that the tissue will remold itself based on the stresses you’re putting on it. You can mold your body based on what your tissues are exposed to. If you’re constantly in one position all day long, then you will lose the cervical curve in your neck. [15:15] These Common Symptoms Means Your Sleeping Posture Is Incorrect If your spine is damaged, it can cause serious side effects. Spine damage can alter your: Ability to lose weight Digestion Ability to take a deep breath Your sleep position can suppress your immune system, digestive system, and reproductive system. If you have autoimmune issues, breathing issues, or chronic digestion issues, then you should take a hard look at your sleeping position. [25:10] Heart Rate Variability (HRV) Has A Strong Connection To Your Sleep So your body has two systems, you have your thrive systems, and then survival systems. The thrive systems include reproductive, digestive, and immune. Your survival systems are engaged to keep you alive. These include your body temperature, your skeletal system, and your cardiovascular system. Your body is growing, healing, and nurturing at night. Your heart rate is very irregular at night. The HRV is an algorithm that measures the variability of the heart and can give you a score. The more variable your heartbeat is, in general, the healthier you are. You want a higher HRV. He was a California State powerlifting champion and got into Thai boxing and jujitsu pretty early on. Did you know that GMOs have nothing to offer when it comes to feeding the hungry world? GMOs do not increase average yields, and increasing yields is not necessarily the way to handle hunger. Currently, there's more food per person than at any time in human history. GMOs work against developing countries, destroys biodiversity and concentrates the power into the hands of corporations. Sadly, GMOs can devastate both the health of humans and animals. [19:50] What Is Happening To Humans When Pesticides Are Going Into Our Water Supply? One of the highest levels of Roundup is in the animal feeds. In addition to being patented as an herbicide, glyphosate was patented as an antibiotic. Glyphosate is a special type of antibiotic because it kills the beneficial bacteria in our gut, not the pathogens. So, it creates dangerous changes in our bodies. Roundup can be a cause of leaky gut, and all diseases come from a leaky gut. Glyphosate damages the sequence of the DNA and creates oxidative stress, linking it to cancer. There are also birth defects associated with it and changes in epigenetics. [37:55] How Do You Go About Finding Wine That Is Not Contaminated? Finding a wine that is not contaminated will be a heavy burden. Someone did a study on organic wines in California. All except one had traces of glyphosate. Why are there traces of glyphosate in most wines? Well, it’s because the water supply is contaminated and because the air is contaminated. Most of the time, ‘organic’ isn’t good enough. Instead, you need to know that it is non-GMO verified. [43:00] The Terms We Want To Look For When We're Shopping For Products Even if the beef says ‘grass-fed,’ it could be grain-finished. If they grain finish, it is probably corn, and that would contain GMOs. You want 100% grass-fed beef. Ideally, you want to call them and ask if the pastures contain any genetically engineered alfalfa. Remember, consumer demand drives the companies. We really want the 100% grass-fed people to say no genetically engineered alfalfa. [4

He started emotional eating, and at age 14, he was 260 pounds with a 50-inch waist. Jonathan’s doctor told him that he was killing himself. So, he decided to lose weight. After cutting fat from his diet, he lost 100 pounds. However, his hormones were out of whack. Jonathan’s binge eating tendencies built up because his ghrelin and leptin were all over the place. Eventually, Jonathan found the ketogenic diet. He went nine months without relapsing on his bulimia when Jonathan started keto. Tomorrow will be three years since his last relapse. [05:35] The Importance of Faith In Order To Have A Mental, Physical, and Overall Health Transformation Humans are powerful creatures, and most of us don't realize what we're capable of as human beings. However, we are innately broken in terms of a moral construct. It’s hard to build something on our own that is sustainable long-term. A higher power will help create a moral construct. It's absolutely huge to have faith in something bigger than yourself. [11:55] You Have To Work Inside Out When It Comes To Losing Weight and Having More Energy True change starts with identity. People have this really bad habit of thinking that the outside actions are going to change their hearts. True pure faith will produce the desire to do the right thing. First, you need to let your internal identity change. So, it’s time to create an identity where you accept and love who you are. Outward change is a temporary fallacy, and inward change is what manifests long-term growth. [15:50] The Most Common Mistakes People Make When Trying The Keto Diet The first mistake people make is fasting out of pressure and not doing it off of innate hunger signals and satiation. A lot of people develop really bad relationships with food, even if they've never had them. Many people abuse fasting. Instead, you should be listening to your body and letting your body guide you on what fasting should look like. Another mistake people make on keto is not eating enough fat. Also, you should not overconsume fat when trying keto. Eight hundred calorie coffees are not the way to go. [19:40] What Are Healthy Keto Products? Tips For Shopping At The Grocery Store Always start on the outer part of the store. Avoid everything that is white. Meats and colored vegetables are what you should stick with. You shouldn’t stroll through the aisles of the grocery store. We are marketed to want the more attractive things first. The farthest part of the store is the meat section – there’s a reason for that. Lastly, watch out for seed oils. [25:15] Are You Having Trouble Sticking With A Keto Lifestyle? Jonathan Has Advice For You First, start internally. Then, work on the external. You know when your body is off. Plus, Dr. Amie was tired, and her hair was falling off. The doctor told her to eat less and exercise more. For Dr. Amie, that wasn’t possible. Six diagnoses later, a doctor said she had hypothyroidism. [04:15] How Long Does It Take For Conventional Medicine To Diagnose A Thyroid Disorder? Doctors are looking at a standard lab range, which is huge. So, it’s challenging to know about thyroid problems with conventional medicine. Some people see between six and ten doctors before learning about hypothyroidism. Amie knows someone who saw forty doctors before she was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. It’s different for everyone. However, if you know something is wrong with your body, then you can’t stop searching for answers. [05:05] The Symptoms To Pay Attention To For Thyroid Disorders You may have a thyroid disorder if you are gaining weight with proper diet and exercise. There are other symptoms of thyroid disorders: Hair loss Fatigue Constipation Hypo is low and slow. Your mood will be depressed, your energy will be down, and your ability to burn fat will be down. [11:55] The Role Insulin Resistance Plays With An Underactive Thyroid “I see insulin resistance in about 99% of my thyroid patients.” -Dr. Amie The thyroid gland is the ultimate master gland of all of your trickle-down hormones. If we are living a lifestyle of high carbs and high sugar, we are actually causing insulin resistance. This type of lifestyle does produce a ton of inflammation. High insulin levels will inflame the thyroid and cause the thyroid to not produce enough hormones. Inflammation is beating up the thyroid gland. [14:00] True or False: You Cannot Do Keto With An Underactive Thyroid False! Keto is by far the best way of eating for hypothyroid patients. When there is inflammation, keto can be a total game-changer. Keto will improve inflammation. Therefore, you can improve your thyroid production. [20:30] Is Long-Term Ketosis A Good Idea For People With An Underactive Thyroid? Being in ketosis for years without a break can lower your 3T3 levels. Usually, it’s not a huge issue because it only lowers those levels a little bit. Instead, Dr. Amie says to come out of ketosis everyone once in a while. He attained both his Doctorate of Chiropractic and Masters in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine from the University of Western States in Portland, OR. He is a health coach, speaker, and the author of two books on health; The Health Evolution: Why Understanding Evolution is the Key to Vibrant Health and The Heart: Our Most Medically Misunderstood Organ. Dr. Hussey guides clients from around the world back to health by using the latest research and health attaining strategies. In his down time he likes to be outdoors, playing sports, reading, writing, and spending time with his wife and their pets. In this episode, Dr. Hussey opens the show by explaining why he wrote a book about the heart. After doing some research, Dr. Hussey realized that many things people told him about the heart growing up were utterly wrong. In college, Dr. Hussey had a good relationship with his pediatric endocrinologist. In fact, he inspired Dr. Hussey to be some sort of medical practitioner. During his studies, Dr. Hussey realized that his lifestyle would impact his inflammatory conditions. No doctors told him to change his lifestyle. Instead, they said to eat whatever he wants and take more insulin when he needs it. [04:00] Why Dr. Hussey Decided To Write A Book All About The Heart Growing up, Dr. Hussey would see posters that said, “diabetics have two to four times increased risk of heart disease.” Whenever Dr. Hussey would ask someone why that was, they would say it was because of higher blood sugar over time. So, Dr. Hussey tried to learn as much as he could about heart disease. After doing his own research, Dr. Hussey realized a lot of things he was told were completely wrong. [10:30] Why Your Organs Prefer To Burn Fatty Acids and Ketones Most organs in general in the body seem to have this preference for burning fatty acids and ketones for fuel. Even in the presence of glucose, the heart still chooses to burn ketones and fatty acids. There are mechanisms in place that give the heart first dibs on fatty acids. Your body needs to be generating the most ATP possible because you get way more ATP burning fatty acids and ketones than you do glucose. [13:20] Why The Red Meat Study Doesn’t Make A Lot of Sense The China Study uses all associations, so they can't really tell us much of anything anyways. You can’t say one thing caused another when doing these types of studies. In The China Study, they found that people who ate more red meat had higher incidences of heart disease. When you look at the data, the people who ate more red meat were people who lived in cities. The study cannot flesh out the differences between someone who lives in a city and lives in a rural area. In cities, there are more toxin exposures and more stressful lifestyles. Plus, there are more processed foods in cities. All these differences cannot be flushed out in a study. [15:30] What Eating Red Meat Does To Your Body Red meat is one of the best foods for human beings. It’s a food that is nutrient-dense and bioavailable. Our population is extremely undernourished and overfed. Red meat will be important for people to consume. Getting rid of animal farming is not an option for the health and future of humans. Humans have been eating red meat since the beginning of humans. It makes no sense that it would be killing us. There are certain nutrients that come almost exclusively from our meat and red meat. Why would a food that has so many beneficial nutrients to the heart also be killing the heart? [27:20] Does LDL Mean Anything When It Comes To All-Cause Mortality? Doctors say that LDL should be lower than 100. However, they started it at 250. So, we really don’t know what it’s supposed to be. The levels of LD
