[00:45] Ari Speaks About Epstein Barr Virus and His Obsession With Energy Optimization Ari has been studying health science his whole life. Unfortunately, Ari got very sick with Epstein Barr Virus and mononucleosis in his mid-twenties. He lost about thirty-five pounds in the span of a month; he couldn’t eat because the back of his throat was so swollen. Ari was left with chronic fatigue; it shifted his entire life. So, Ari started to focus on the world of energy optimization; he became obsessed with energy science. Conventional medical doctors had no information to offer Ari. After doing research, Ari found that science actually does not support the idea that adrenal fatigue is a significant cause of chronic fatigue. [08:45] The Key To Overcoming Fatigue Is Growing More Mitochondria Finding ways to grow more mitochondria and strengthen your mitochondria is a massive key to the puzzle of overcoming fatigue. The mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell. We are taught to think of mitochondria as these mindless energy generators. Something you may not know is the mitochondria have a dual role beyond energy production, which is just as important as their role in energy production. The mitochondria also help with energy regulation. Your energy levels are a function of the degree to which your mitochondria decide if you’re safe or if you’re under attack. [17:50] Hormetic Stressors Will Make Your Mitochondria Bigger and Stronger Hormetic stress is how a transient metabolic stressor works to stimulate beneficial adaptations that ultimately increase resilience and resistance in the face of a broad range of other stressors. Basically, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. By exposing yourself to moderate stressors within your body's capacity, you make your body more robust and more resistant. [01:45] Kali Opens Up About Her Story and Finding Out About Stage 4 Cancer Owen and Kali have the same type of cancer, thymoma. Kali decided to do her own research, take control of her health, and be her advocate. Kali found out about her stage 4 cancer two months after having a baby. It all started during Covid; Kali had chest pain and difficulty breathing. After going to the emergency room, the doctors found a tumor the size of an orange. The tumor had ruptured, causing immense pain. Eventually, Kali had her diaphragm removed and replaced with mesh. Plus, the doctors stripped her pleural lining and took a little bit of her right lung. [14:30] Owen Speaks About His Story and Also Getting Diagnosed With Stage 4 Cancer Owen had a grapefruit-sized tumor in his chest. He had surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. Later, Owen shrunk his tumor 30% by fasting and eating a plant-based keto diet. Through lifestyle changes, Owen was in a therapeutic process, changing his body’s chemistry to eat cancer while awake and thriving. Eventually, Owen was diagnosed with stage four cancer. The doctors told Owen that there was no hope; every single scan got worse. Owen was told he would only live two to five more years. Owen’s doctors told them there was no chance. So, why would he do what the doctors told him to do? Instead, Owen wanted to follow people who believed he could overcome his diagnosis. Instead, you should find a community of survivors, not statistics from doctors. When you surround yourself with survivors, you will be in a healthier place. Owen brought this up to his doctor; she said he wouldn’t live that long anyway. When you test fasting and keto, you have to get a scan and see what it did; you have to be strategic. Movie companies need their starlets to look a certain way. Vinnie would receive the call to get people into shape in three weeks. You can’t run off fourteen months of bad behavior. Instead, weight loss is all about diet. Vinnie knew that meat is a great way to lose weight, decrease inflammation, and feel better overall. Plus, meat is heart-healthy. Vinnie wrote the book Fitness Confidential; he didn’t want to put the word ketosis in the book. He knew the medical community would say he was trying to kill people. [06:45] Why Vinnie Never Used The Word “Keto” In 2013, Vinnie heard about net carbs. It doesn’t work! If it worked, Vinnie would tell people to do it. Vinnie gives away his information for free – he has never charged for his information. So, why would he lie to anyone? Vinnie owns the rights to NSNG (no sugars, no grains). No one is certifying the word “keto.” You can take a bowl of sugar, wrap it up, and say it’s keto-certified. In reality, it’s not keto-certified because it’s not good for you. [12:15] Why Insulin Is Important If insulin is so bad, then why do people need it to live? Insulin is a hormone that we need to live. All hormones control mechanisms in our bodies. Insulin does a lot of things. It gets released to go down and cover sugar in our liver. When you eat a piece of fruit, the sugar gets to your liver. Then, the insulin will convert sugar into glucose and stores it around your body. In order to maintain homeostasis, we only have a couple of teaspoons in our blood. Sugar can’t go anywhere. So, our body will store it as fat though long-chain triglycerides. The long-chain triglycerides take a lot of work to break it down. When we eat too many carbs, you are getting an insulin load. It makes us insulin resistant. Then, we can end up type 2 diabetes. The key is to eat foods that are insulin friendly. [18:25] Can Fat Make You Fat? Yes, fat can you make you fat if you eat it in excess. However, fats aren’t going to make you eat in excess. For example, you can eat a whole bag of corn chips. Once you start eating them, you can’t stop. People who are obese can’t stop eating corn chips. While on the other hand, if you went to steakhouse, and you had a giant fatty steak. When you take the last bite and they bring you a second steak, you would bag it up and take it home. Why is that? With the Doritos, the hormones are pouring out. With the meat, you feel satiated. You are going to feel full on fatty things vs. carbs. [27:50] Drinking Too Much Heavy Cream Vinnie tells a story about one of his clients, Gabriella, who stopped losing weight. She had another thirty pounds to go. Gabriella would drink coffee with heavy cream in the morning and eggs. She explains the rest of her diet and it was all perfect. However, Gabriella was actually drinking 18 oz of heavy cream every morning. Even when you have too much fat, you may not get fat. However, it may prevent you from losing weight. The average liver cell has 2,000, kidney cells have 4,000, heart cells have 10,000, and a mature egg in a woman's body has 600,000 mitochondria. The cells that are primarily relied upon for survival have the most mitochondria. If you are not sleeping throughout the night, then do not start fasting. Instead, you need to figure out why you are not sleeping. Next, you are being too restrictive with your fasts. We need to hit our proteins, fats, and non-starchy carbohydrates. However, many people are too rigid. It would help if you believed in the value of a refeeding day. Depending on where you are in your menstrual cycle, maybe it's time to add some root vegetables or squash. Cynthia broke her fast early today because she did a heavy lift day. Lean into what your body is telling you! Lastly, many people are exercising too much. Cynthia says you need to exercise smarter, not harder. She has done over 70,000 kilometers around the earth. Lisa wasn’t built to run; instead, she decided she wanted to become a runner. In the beginning, Lisa suffered. However, she got good enough to overcome the adversity. [07:15] Lisa Was In An Abusive Relationship and Discovered Ultramarathon Running Lisa was in an abusive relationship in her 20s. Her relationship had a massive impact on her. Lisa felt hopeless because she was constantly being verbally abused. Eventually, Lisa recovered from her relationship and got into ultramarathon running. The comradeship, friendship, and positivity kept her coming back to ultramarathons. [18:10] What To Do If You’re Going Through A Traumatic Situation You need to take control of some aspect of the crisis you're going through. The amygdala is a very primitive part of the brain that does this fight or flight response. Your amygdala will takeover during something traumatic. So, you need to get control of your breath. The exhale will be critical; the exhale tells your body that it is not in danger. In fight or flight, your prefrontal cortex turns off. Next, look at what you can control. [23:35] Relentless: How A Mother and Daughter Defied The Odds Six years ago, Lisa’s mom had a massive aneurysm. When they got to the doctor, they said she only had a migraine. After six hours, Lisa’s mom got a CT scan; they found out a massive vessel had burst. At that moment, they didn’t think she would survive. An air ambulance took twelve hours to arrive. To stay calm, Lisa figured out what she could be in control of during this situation. Lisa’s mom was in and out of a coma for three weeks. Eventually, she stabilized, and she survived. The book Relentless is a mindset book; it’s the mindset that it takes to overcome massive obstacles. The book can be applied in any situation. If you're continually activating your nervous system in preparation for danger, you're not allowing your body to recover fully. The ability to bounce back is part of resilience. [09:40] How The Environment of Our Childhood Will Affect Our Resilience Primitive Gestalt patterns are how our brain develops throughout childhood based on the lessons of our childhood environment. Our brain literally forms its circuitry based on those childhood lessons. We adapt to our childhood environment. Then our adaptation gets locked in. If our childhood was dangerous, we as adults continue to think the world is just as dangerous. Resilience is about being able to think outside the box and adapt to our current environment. Many of the consequences of our childhood are not something that we're always conscious about. [14:50] Unpacking The Unconscious To Live A Happier Life The first step in unpacking the unconscious is a willingness to face complicated feelings, emotions, and issues. Next, you have to be accepting of whatever emotions you have. You can love your mother and father yet still be angry at them. Living a happier and healthier life is about a willingness to grow up. [20:50] The First Three Pillars From The Path: Mastering the Nine Pillars of Resilience and Success What is the most crucial relationship that you have? It’s the relationship with yourself. Consider these questions: Are you critical and judgmental of yourself? Do you put yourself down? Are you loving, accepting, and compassionate toward yourself? The first pillar is all about how you treat yourself and then comparing that to the healthy or ideal way of treating yourself. You can do this by becoming consciously aware of your thoughts. It's about building muscle tissue; it handles growth and cell reproduction. Kids have a high driving mTOR because their bodies are growing fast. The same goes for pregnant women. We still want activity in the mTOR pathway, mainly because we want to maintain lean body tissue, be resilient, and be fit. Basically, mTOR helps us be strong, healthy, and preserve muscle tissue. However, when mTOR is turned on all the time, now we end up with too much inflammation. Autophagy will help you find balance because it suppresses mTOR. What Happens When Our Body Gets Rid of A Cell? When your body gets rid of a cell, it will replace it. It creates new young embryonic cells with more stress resiliency and stronger mitochondria. When we have these senescence cells that are continuing to divide, they create more copies of badly damaged cells. So instead, we want to get rid of those, or we want to repair them before they become a zombie cell. If they've already become zombies, we get rid of them and replace them with these young embryonic stem cells. Why Dr. Jockers Loves Keto Keto just allows his brain to function at its best; it's really a state of thriving. When ketones are elevated, your body becomes highly energy efficient. He feels more at peace and calmer when he is in ketosis. In ketosis, your brain can function at a higher level, and you can create at a higher level. In human history, when they didn't have food, they needed to become creative, and they needed to be resilient. If we are always well-fed, then we become lazy. Why We Don’t Want To Do Keto Forever Keto is a nutrition plan that, in a sense, mimics fasting in that it keeps insulin down. We need higher insulin for short periods to tell the body to produce certain hormones and tell the body to build and grow. We want to replenish our bodies entirely and make the hormones we need to thrive. Sex hormones, for example, and thyroid hormones, depend upon enough insulin to get the right amount of stimulation. Many people, they're already producing too much insulin. Once insulin gets down, we want to elevate it for short periods then drop it down again. She was fascinated by why some foods are considered good while others are considered bad. At one point, Risa was having fertility issues. She found out that she had a low-functioning thyroid. The doctor gave Risa medication that she was supposed to take for the rest of her life. Eventually, she was diagnosed with Hashimoto's. Risa had no idea why her thyroid was attacking itself. Plus, she has additional training to be board certified in geriatrics. Dr. Nolte would see people in their sixties who were acting like they were eighty. The care and services that Dr. Nolte would provide seemed like it was too little and too late. Insulin resistance is at the core of all the conditions that Dr. Nolte treats. The longer you hold off making those lifestyle changes, the harder it will be to get healthier. The longer we continue to make poor decisions, the easier those decisions are to maintain. [10:15] The Role of Insulin In Health and Disease Insulin is a hormone made by your pancreas. It is a good thing and a vital hormone. Insulin is an anabolic hormone, meaning its role is to build things up. Insulin’s role is to move blood sugar, or blood glucose from your bloodstream, into your cells to be either used as energy right away or to be stored in the form of muscle glycogen, liver glycogen, adipose tissue, or fat tissue. Exercise will reduce blood sugar. You shouldn’t focus on calories. Instead, you should focus on blood sugar for weight loss. When insulin continues to go up, your cells will become resistant to that insulin. Eventually, you will start to see blood sugars go up. Remember, 88% of adults have insulin resistance. If you learn how to live a low insulin lifestyle, you’ll lose weight and prevent disease. [22:50] Your Metabolism Will Slow Down With Chronic Caloric Restriction A fascinating study showed chronic caloric restriction slows your metabolism for six months to four years. When you return to your old eating habits, you’ll gain weight because your metabolism has slowed down. Many doctors don’t have the capacity and the resources to help their patients with nutrition. Overall, we need more proactive measures, and we need to take responsibility for our health. [25:40] Stop Asking This Question: “How Do I Lose Weight?” We are asking the wrong question. We shouldn’t ask, “how do I lose weight?” In reality, you should be asking, “how do I lower insulin?” The quality of the questions you are asking will determine the quality of your life. If you want to lose weight and keep it off, that takes an entirely different approach and mindset. Anyone who has been in the coaching business understands that mindset trumps everything else. If you don’t have the mindset in place, all other strategies will fall short. Bronson saw his gut hanging out and man boobs; it wasn’t how he pictured himself. At that point, Bronson started to question what he was doing. Eventually, Bronson realized that if you aren’t moving forward, you are moving backward. [05:30] How Bronson Started To Change His Lifestyle First, Bronson stopped eating french fries. He was eating three to four servings of french fries a day. It took a year for Bronson to stop thinking about fries. Plus, Bronson would eat out all of the time. So, he needed to change that habit. [14:30] How To Let Go of Something To Grow and Improve You have to live within who you think you are. If you don’t like where you’re at, you need to change your reality. Make the changes you need to be in the reality you dream about. Overall, you have to let something go in order to move forward. Take your lean mass, turn it into grams, and that’s how much protein you want as a minimum, and that’s the maximum that you should have for fat and carbs combined. [21:50] The Difference Between Animal-Based Protein and Plant-Based Protein Animal-based protein is bioavailable; your body needs to be able to use that protein. If you get protein from plants, your body has to do extra work. For example, if you’re getting most of your nutrients from plants, then you need more vitamin C because you’re not getting as much collagen. There’s a bunch of extra work you need to do when you’re getting protein from plants. [28:40] Why Bronson Is A Huge Fan of Living a Carnivore Lifestyle Bronson follows a carnivore diet, but he has butter and eggs. He eats about eight eggs a day. For Clearing Free Radicals Spirulina is an effortless way to get the nutrients you need to give you energy. The true energy that you get from spirulina is really at the cellular level. When your cells have energy, you’re getting better digestion, reduced inflammation, more free radicals, and you can think clearer. Inside the mitochondria is a second membrane where ATP production occurs. Virtually no antioxidants can make their way into that inner membrane. [17:50] How Chlorophyll Can Heal Cellular Damage Inside The Body When you have free radicals, they cause what's called oxidative stress. Oxidative stress will cause cellular damage. With cellular damage, nutrients cannot flow into the cells, and toxins cannot flow out of the cells. So, you will end up with more free radicals inside the cell, causing severe damage. Eventually, this can cause rogue cells, leading to cancer. Chlorella and spirulina are excellent at correcting that because they have the highest chlorophyll concentration in the world. Healthy fats will heal your cell walls. Chlorophyll is a fat-based pigment. [23:25] The Reasons You Should Take Algae Instead of Fish Oil Spirulina is higher in GLA and omegas than fish oil. Fish get their omegas from algae. So cut out the middle man by going straight to the algae. Algae is cleaner, and it doesn’t go any farther down the food chain. Chronic Inflammation First off, there are good and useful inflammations. Acute inflammation is where you get injured from a sprained ankle, for example, the swelling there is good; it's the first step in healing. Acute inflammation is not what we are talking about today. The enemy; is chronic, inappropriate inflammation. This inflammation is almost always caused by something in your environment getting into your body. It can be caused by something you eat, drink, or chemicals and toxins that you are exposed to in your environment. This leads to chronic inflammation in your body while it is trying to cope with the everyday insult of the toxins. [09:50] Metabolic Health: Inflammation, Obesity, And The Concerns Around Dairy Products Up until about year five, children drink milk regularly and are able to process it well. However, around the age of five, our biochemical machinery starts to shut off the ability to break down lactose. In fact, at least two-thirds of adults are lactose intolerant. This means for most adults, the bovine proteins and amino acids in dairy are inflammatory. As for cheese, some are better than others when it comes to inflammation. Berry explains that the further the cheese has been removed from liquid milk, the less inflammatory in most cases. For example, hard cheeses like parmesan have been fermented for a long time and will cause the least amount of inflammation. A dairy-free month is great to determine if your issues, such as chronic inflammation, gut issues, and trouble losing weight, come from your intake of dairy products. [18:30] Shocking! Another Inflammatory Food That May Surprise You A food that many people think is healthy, but is surprisingly inflammatory, is nuts. Even though nuts are looked at as a healthy snack, they are actually very carb-heavy and can slow down your weight loss. Cutting nuts out of your diet may seem restrictive, but not meeting your goals and being able to do whatever you want to in a day physically is really what is restrictive. A good way to eat nuts is occasionally, not every day. Eating them occasionally is probably fine because it mirrors our ancestors' behavior. [23:23] Why The Carnivore Diet Is Beneficial For Reducing Inflammation The carnivore diet, by definition, is the lowest carbohydrate diet you can eat. It is as close to zero carb as you can get. It also eliminates all the other foods that people could potentially be allergic to, such as the proteins in dairy or the phytochemicals in plants. Berry believes that meat and eggs are the least inflammatory foods on the planet, not including water. Meat is also the most nutrient-dense food on the planet, especially if you add organ meat to your diet. If you want to eat breakfast, start with eggs! Cynthia is a big fan of eggs, bacon, and avocado. Also, you can eat leftovers from the night before. [08:15] Calories In, Calories Out – Does That Really Matter When It Comes To Health? Calories are a measure of energy. You should be more concerned about the choices of macronutrients that you consume. Stop counting calories; start counting your carbohydrates. Start being conscientious about your protein intake and being conscientious about the quality of fats you're consuming. Worrying about calories has done us a tremendous disservice. [11:05] Why It’s A Bad Idea To Snack Throughout The Day Many people still think that you need to eat for meal frequency to stoke your metabolism and keep your blood sugar stable. However, we are better off not evoking an insulin response throughout the day. When we're frequently eating, we are not giving our digestive system time to break down food. Meal frequency can be hugely problematic for people with imbalanced hormones. Our bodies are designed to eat less often. To really optimize our health, we need to follow along with that. [14:15] The Differences Between Brown Fat and White Fat White fat is the typical fat that you think about. There's not a lot of activity; there's a lot of inflammation, cytokines, etc. Brown fat is fat that has mitochondria. There’s a lot more energetic capacity. When you're fasting, you can actually turn white fat into this more metabolically active mitochondrial-rich tissue. We want our fat to be as metabolically active as possible in a positive direction. [16:30] The Freedom That Fasting Can Create In Your Life When you are fat-adapted, you won’t be focused on food. Plus, there is a spiritual side of fasting. Fasting is incorporated into all major religions. On so many levels, there is a lot more to fasting than people think. Fasting will give you a clean slate every day.

We know what causes other diseases or infections. Cancer is the second cause of death in America, yet we don’t know what it is. The way we think about cancer has changed significantly throughout the years. There is an enormous shift in how we see the disease, affecting how we treat the disease. There is a recognition that cancer is actually an obesity-related disease. In 2003, there was convincing evidence about the correlation between cancer and obesity. In fact, it’s a massive part of cancer. Diet turns out to be 30-35% related to cancer causation. Breast cancer and colorectal cancer are the most prominent obesity-related cancers. “Diseases of metabolism are also diseases of growth.” -Dr. Jason Fung [16:15] Every Cancer Develops From Your Own Cells The number of mutations that are required to get cancer far outstrips the rate of mutation. Why does every cancer look exactly the same? People will have identical cancers that develop independently of each other. Cancer is an evolutionary disease. You can take the tools of evolutionary biology and apply them to cancer instead. All the different mutations are not random because they all end up in the same place. It’s not a random chance mutation; it’s a guided mutation. Cancer is not part of your body; it’s foreign. The immune system will attack cancer cells. [25:00] A Seven-Day Water Fast Could Shrink Tumors The research on water fasts is preliminary. A water fast will maximize autophagy. It will put your cells into maintenance mode. When you fast, your insulin will lower as well as your mTOR. Cancer is a tough thing to study because you cannot use preventative treatments once it gets past a certain point. If you want to study prevention, then you need lots of people. [29:00] The Correlation Between Glucose and Cancer Cancer runs on glucose much better than they run on fat. If a cell is trying to grow, then it needs fuel. Some cancer cells can run on protein and fat. Glucose is the most readily available fuel, and it makes the cell run efficiently. If you starve the cell of glucose, then it can change. Before you develop cancer, nutrition can be enough to prevent it. [38:35] How Bad Fats Could Increase Our Chances of Cancer Bad fats could possibly increase our chances of cancer. However, the data isn’t there yet. Anything that increases inflammation is going to create a risk of cancer. Cancer develops from inflammation and chronic damage. Anything that causes chronic damage to the body puts pressure on the body to be in survival mode. [42:50] The Benefits of Metformin If you have type 2 diabetes, then metformin may be better for cancer prevention. Metformin will turn down excessive growth. If you are in growth mode all the time, it’s bad for longevity. You want your metabolic rate to be lower by eating less. [45:30] Getting Too Much Autophagy Too much autophagy is bad and too little autophagy is bad. You want to be somewhere in the middle. You want to maintain a middle ground of autophagy for the most part. When you eat too much, you’ll turn off autophagy. [47:40] How Fasting Can Improve Chemotherapy Chemotherapy will kill cancer cells. Fasting will turn down normal cell growth. Therefore, they will be less susceptible to chemotherapy. So, they went and got testing, but nothing was coming back. Three months after he started having symptoms, he had a colonoscopy done, and he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. [07:40] About Homocysteine and Your Optimal Range Homocysteine is this amino acid that we all have. If you have too much, it's a problem. If you do not have enough, it's a problem. Unfortunately, the range on lab work is way too large. You should be in the six to eight range. If you’re above an eight on homocysteine, you are high. This means you have some cardiovascular damage, and it will increase your risk for dementia-related issues. [12:10] The Difference Between The Genes We're Born With and Epigenetics The genes you are born with are the cards that you are dealt. You can’t change the genes that you are born with. Epigenetics is how your environment is going to influence those chains. You can do something about pretty much every genetic situation. [16:15] The Correlation Between APOE Genes and Alzheimer’s Disease The APOE3 gene is most common. About 75% of people have that; it is considered neutral as far as Alzheimer's disease goes. If you have the APOE4 gene, you are at an increased risk for Alzheimer’s. APOE2 is pretty rare; only five percent of the population has it. APOE2 is protected against Alzheimer’s disease. [19:35] Preventing Alzheimer’s Disease: Eating Right For Your APOE4 Gene APOE4 genotypes are at an increased risk for atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis can accelerate dementia and Alzheimer's disease. If you have APOE4, you should eat a Mediterranean-type diet. Intermittent fasting is really good for people with APOE4. If you eat earlier in the day and finish eating earlier in the day, you may have better results. [23:40] The Importance of Quality Sleep When It Comes To Your Health The top priority is to fix your sleep. If you aren’t getting good sleep, then you can’t handle anything else. Everything is so much easier if you have the energy to do it. So, if you’re not sleeping through the night, that’s something you need to fix as soon as possible. Everything will be more difficult if you are not getting quality sleep. High blood pressure has something to do with the kidneys and salt. A substance called uric acid seems to be important in what causes high blood pressure. As he studied uric acid, he started to realize it was more than just high blood pressure and gout. Uric acid is actually involved in obesity, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes. Eventually, he found that fructose led to an increase in uric acid. [04:20] What Is The Connection Between High Uric Acid and Inflammation? Our body is made up of protein, carbohydrates, fat, bone, etc. Uric acid is considered a waste product. When we eat meats, drink beer, and eat sugar, these foods can generate uric acid. Uric acid is what is excreted from the body. If uric acid is built up, it can lead to inflammation and gout. 9 million people in the United States suffer from gout. A lot of people have low-grade inflammation in their blood. This inflammation can accelerate diseases like atherosclerosis and heart disease. [09:10] Why Is Your Body Producing Excess Uric Acid? If your uric acid is very high, it increases your risk for mortality. Plus, uric acid is being linked to cancer. Uric acid is involved in the process to make fat. When you eat enough fructose, it triggers uric acid. The body switches from making a lot of ATP to storing the energy in fat. Uric acid is actually important in survival. Humans are very sensitive to fructose. Fructose is in table sugar and high fructose table sugar. [24:20] Why The Keto Lifestyle Is So Powerful Our bodies can make fructose. [08:30] How Burning Sugar Is Like A Wood Fireplace Generally, we are carbohydrate or sugar burners. Carb burners are like wood-burning fireplaces. You constantly have to stuff wood in it, so it doesn’t burn out. When people have to eat every three hours, they are running out of sugar to keep their energy up. Fat-burning is like a propane tank; it can go for hours or maybe days. Every cell in the body prefers to burn fat for its fuel. [13:15] What Exactly Is Visceral Fat and What You Need To Know About It Visceral fat isn’t something you can see or pinch. Visceral fat actually fills up in the organs. This fat really gets in the liver. Visceral fat grows its own blood vessels, and it starts to secrete its own hormones. The number one goal of visceral fat is to grow larger. This type of fat will wake you up in the middle of the night and send you to the fridge to eat something. It secretes aromatase, which increases the risk for breast cancer significantly. They can become brain, skin, muscle, bone, whatever is needed. However, we can't call a cell in an adult human an embryonic cell. So we changed the name to the stem cell. The idea that the general population holds is that genes turn on and off and, in the process, control the expression of our cells. Lipton, however, found while cloning stem cells that taking genetically identical cells and putting them in different environments made the cells show an expression that fit that environment. This shows that the expression of cells is not controlled by genes but by signals from the environment. [16:54] How Energy Frequencies And Our Cell Receptors Intertwine Cell receptors are like antennas that receive signals. Conventional people would say that receptors only respond to physical things like pharmaceutical drugs. Lipton explains that these receptors actually pick up energy vibrations. Receptors pick up signals from the environment and adjust the body accordingly to live in that environment. [19:50] How Our Frequencies Communicate With DNA to Produce Proteins When we see something we love, our brain translates that into complementary chemistry. When we are in love, dopamine is released by the brain, goes into the blood, goes into the cells, and engages them in a pleasurable sensation. Oxytocin is also released when you are feeling love. It sends the signal to your brain to bond with whatever you are feeling love towards. These love hormones promote growth and vitality. Likewise, when we see something that scares us, chemicals are also released. But on the other hand, the chemicals released when we are scared do not promote growth; they instead use that energy to get the body ready to run away. [24:16] How Stress Hormones Steal From Your Body Stress hormones cause the body to shut down the energy used in growth and maintenance, the immune system, and the system's intelligence. The immune system uses a great deal of energy; however, when the body is introduced to stress hormones, it takes energy away from the immune system and gives that energy to get the body ready for stressful situations. When this system was designed, it was helpful because, if a tiger was chasing you, after 10 minutes and you used all of your energy and escaped, you could go back to growth and health again. In today's world, however, stress is involved in so many parts of our everyday lives that we are releasing stress hormones all day, and our body is not able to maintain itself. [33:08] Knowledge Is The Key To Reprogramming The Mind The lack of knowledge is the lack of power. Big pharmaceutical companies have systematically deprived people of knowledge. The keto cookies are made with gluten – they are causing inflammation! If you are not in ketosis some of the time, you will not live to 180. On the Bulletproof diet, people have lost 1,000,000 pounds. Not eating carbs doesn’t work 100% of the time. [04:50] Why We Need To Eat The Right Fats What are our cell membranes made of? Well, it depends where they are found in the body. Look at everything you eat from three different lenses: Is it going to be used as a building block? Is it going to be used as a fuel? What toxins does it have in it? What percentage of your body are carbs? Less than one percent. You do not need carbs as a building block. There is about a two-year half-life of fat in the body. When you eat good fats, it will take two years to make your cell membranes functioning. Saturated fats are awesome because they do not break easily, and they are stable. We have demonized saturated fats. However, 45% of our cell membrane fat is saturated fats. The only fat your body can make is saturated fat. Our brains need these saturated fats. Monounsaturated fats fill in the big building blocks. Omega-3s and omega-6s will be the lubricants. [12:45] Think About Quality Ingredients People will try and put anything in the keto category. It’s a problem. The quality of the ingredients matter. The reason grass-fed butter is such a big thing is because the fatty acid ratios are different. Animal fat is so precious – that’s why Dave raises his own animals. Part of the keto message has to be “don’t eat industrial meat.” It will WRECK your ketosis. Short-ribs from a grass-fed cow are covered in fat. It is a religious experience. Eat less meat and spend more on it if that what it takes to eat grass-fed meat. Half of your fat calories should be saturated. [18:50] Stop Overcooking Your Foods Overcooked food is rough on your liver. When you eat heavily charred meat, you’ll feel bad. It doesn’t matter if it’s delicious; it matters how you will feel when it’s done. Parts of our cells will act as incinerators. They burn our proteins and digest them. Overcooked foods will clog them up. If you keep shoveling them in there, then there is no mechanism to clean them up. Do not eat smoked foods! AND MUCH MORE! If your jaw is too small, there’s not enough room for the tongue. So, the tongue is more likely to encroach the airway. When your airway is compromised, you may get disordered breathing during sleep. A palate expander is something that can be useful to improve breathing. [16:40] The Problems That Can Develop With Chronic Mouth Breathing Yawning excessively can be a clue to mouth breathing. Whenever Patrick works with a student, he tries to switch them from mouth breathing to nose breathing as much as possible. He also works on functional breathing patterns. Light breathing helps ensure the blood chemistry is normal. You’re more likely to breathe light through your nose. By changing our breathing patterns, we can stimulate the vagus nerve. [21:55] Patrick Explains How You Should Breathe Through Your Nose Bring your attention to your breathing. Slow down your inhale, and have a slow, gentle exhalation. When you need to breathe in, take in a gentle inhalation. At the end of the inhalation, bring a feeling of relaxation to the body. When you do this correctly, you will feel air hunger. As you do this for two to three minutes, check the saliva in your mouth. Normally, it increases. When the human body undergoes stress, the mouth goes dry. While on the other hand, when we slow down our breathing, we should have more saliva in the mouth. You Can Be Metabolically Unhealthy But Look Skinny There are two different types of fat: subcutaneous fat and visceral fat. Subcutaneous fat is the fat that we are self-conscious of at the beach. It sits between our abdominal wall and our abdominal cavity. This type of fat doesn't exactly go into our organs or infiltrate our organs; it's unsightly, and if we accumulate more of it, it puts us at risk for disease. The secondary type of fat, visceral fat, is a real sneaky bugger. It sits under the abdominal cavity. Plus, this type of fat wraps around your organs and infiltrates into your organs. You can have a lot of visceral fat and still be skinny. The scale doesn't tell us what our body is made up of. Is Insulin Bad For You? Too much of anything good for you is bad for you. Not having enough insulin, that's a problem, or having too much insulin too, is also a problem. Sadly, mainstream medicine doesn't understand the definition of too much insulin. Megan says that there is a time and a place for insulin injections for certain people. However, most people are eating a diet that's highly processed and full of refined sugars and fats. Plus, we're eating all of the time; so, we're making our body produce lots of insulin over time. For North Americans, our constant state is to produce insulin all the time. Our cells will develop resistance. Remember, absence makes the heart grow stronger. Why Megan Loves a Low Carb Approach You don't want to keep adding fuel to the fire; dietary choices are essential. When you're eating low carbs, you're not adding more fuel to the fire, and you're giving your body a chance to burn off some of that fire. When someone already has insulin resistance, insulin resistance causes the body to produce insulin. If you are constantly eating all day long, then insulin is being leaked into the body all day long. Intermittent fasting will help break the cycle of insulin resistance because you will be suffocating the fire. Overall, the body is impressive, and you have to remove the interferences. The Reason You Want Variation For Fasting You don't want to slip into this one meal-a-day pattern consistently because the body will adapt. You want to keep confusing the body and changing it up; that way, the body won't adapt. It's great to mix things up! Our primary hunger hormone is ghrelin, and when men and women both start fasting, we see a drop in ghrelin. Then men's ghrelin tends just to go up and down, and it stays relatively consistent. However, women will see an initial drop; it will continue to decline more than their male counterparts. Many women feel like they're constantly putting out this enormous fire when doing alternate daily fasting. They would instead rather get into a fast and stay there. If you want to stay in a fast, you can! However, you need to cut out the snacks and reduce problematic foods. Plus, they had a vegan doctor to argue against Dr. Paul. There was a lot of yelling, and Dr. Paul was barely given a chance to say what he needed to say. Paul invited them to his podcast to have an honest and genuine debate. None of them showed up. Eventually, Dr. Paul was getting a lot of muscle cramps, and he was getting heart palpitations at night. So, Dr. Paul started to reintroduce carbohydrates into his diet. First, he started to introduce honey into his lifestyle. After incorporating honey, Dr. Paul started to feel better. Blood sugar will spike when you include carbohydrates in your diet, especially honey. However, Dr. Paul’s blood glucose tracing was very low. [22:50] Why Dr. Paul Doesn’t Like The Term Insulin Resistance Paul doesn’t like the term insulin resistance. He thinks metabolic dysfunction is a more precise term. He doesn't like to say insulin resistance because two types of insulin resistance are often confused and conflated. The first type of insulin resistance is physiologic insulin resistance. Humans have evolved a state known as ketosis, which goes hand in hand with physiologic insulin resistance. Then, there is pathological insulin resistance. Many people who exclude carbohydrates will see improvements in their physiology. [34:50] The Importance of Decreasing The Amount of Linoleic Acid In Your Diet Many people should decrease the amount of linoleic acid in their diet. We have to understand how much linoleic acid is in the foods we eat as humans. Soybean oil has 45 to 50% linoleic acid. Butter and tallow, which has rendered animal fat from cows, will have much lower levels of linoleic acid, around 2%. The composition of our cell membranes takes a long time to change. So, breaking down the linoleic acid will take a great deal of time. A low carbohydrate approach will help lower the linoleic acid in your diet. [40:00] What Happens When We Consume Too Much Linoleic Acid When we eat more linoleic acid, we can find more oxidized LDL. The oxidation and the instability of linoleic acid is one of the problems. There could be some potentially hormonal roles for linoleic acid that are negative as well. The underlying thing to consider here is an evolutionarily appropriate diet for humans.
