Minisode Monday #57 | The Way We Treat the Ones We Meet

Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. This time around, we show how making a small change in how we treat people we meet promotes a mindset shift in the way we're perceived and the way we perceive ourselves. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: Take the extra effort to treat everyone you meet as if you're going to know each other forever. Think about it: if you're in a lousy mood, you might be more dismissive about someone you think you'll never see again. But the world's smaller than you think -- act as if you might cross paths again with the people you meet, because it's always a possibility. This doesn't mean you have to approach everyone as if they're going to be your new best friend, but being mindful of the fact you may meet again will make you more conscious of how you act toward them. As we demonstrate here, just the simple act of being nice to people can make a big difference -- in how you're perceived and how you feel about yourself. Minisode Monday #56 | Success Momentum

Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. This week, we talk about success momentum: small wins that increase confidence and resilience. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: Sometimes we jump out of bed, ready to attack the day. But what do we do on days we wake up without motivation? Some people have morning rituals. But starting with even just one small win can be as simple as brushing your teeth or walking the dog. Small wins generate success momentum that builds up over time and results in bigger wins -- and a better self-image. Remember Aesop's tortoise and the hare fable? Minisode Monday #55 | Communication Between the Lines

Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. "You think you're ordering a coffee, but you're also sending non-verbal signals out the entire time. What do those signals communicate?" -Jordan Harbinger In this Minisode Monday, we talk about the messages we're sending and receiving between the lines when we communicate both verbally and non-verbally -- and how we can hone the way we send and receive for greater clarity. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet for Communication Between the Lines: Intentionally expressed or not, there's always something going on between the lines when it comes to communication -- whether it's verbal or non-verbal. This between-the-lines message may not only be unintentional -- its interpretation may be faulty on the receiving end because non-verbal communication isn't necessarily universal. How can we get a grip on the signals we send -- and ensure we're not misinterpreting the signals we're receiving? To calibrate the way we send and receive signals, we should take note of how -- for instance -- someone using quickspeech or dismissive body language makes us feel. Then, think about situations in which we might be giving off similar signals to others. We can constantly learn from these interactions to better control the signals we're sending out -- and taking in -- between the lines. Minisode Monday #54 | Treat Your Haters Like Toddlers

Ever get upset by rude comments on the Internet? In this Minisode Monday, we share an effective strategy for dealing with this that we learned from Jay Baer, author of Hug Your Haters: How to Embrace Complaints and Keep Your Customers. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: You can post anything online -- videos of puppies eating birthday cake -- and someone will eventually show up to leave a hateful or hurtful comment. If you're immune to the impact of anonymous rudeness on the Internet, you're better than most of us. But if you're not, Jay Baer recommends a simple strategy: treat your haters like toddlers. Think about it: if you're enjoying yourself at a dinner party and your host's three-year-old wanders into the room and makes fun of your pants, you probably won't care. We don't tend to give toddlers much credit for having an informed opinion about anything, nor do we rely on their sense of taste. So would we get upset at a toddler and try to "set them straight" in such a situation? Next time someone brings you down on purpose, tries to sabotage you, or makes you feel small in some way, just think of that hater as a toddler -- and treat him or her accordingly. Minisode Monday #53 | Creative Avoidance

Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. This week, Reach author Andy Molinsky rejoins us to talk about the creative ways we manage avoidance of things we don't want to do -- and what we can do to break the habit. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: Avoid the task entirely. Structuring our lives around the tasks we want to avoid. Example: staying away from networking events, even if we know we could benefit from going to them. Doing the task, but only part way. Accomplishing the part of a task that's slightly more comfortable than the rest of it. Example: Going to a networking event, but making an excuse for leaving early. Replacing the task. Convincing ourselves that doing an easier task makes up for the task we don't want to do. Example: Being active in social media because we don't want to go to networking events. Procrastinating. Putting off tasks so we can avoid doing them until later (or possibly never). Example: Not responding to networking event invitations in time to actually make the events. Passing the buck. Having someone else do the task we don't want to do. Example: Sending an assistant to the networking event we'd rather avoid. Rationalizing that the task's not important anyway. Example: Telling ourselves we don't need networking events because our own hard work will ensure success. Minisode Monday #52 | Five Tips for Remembering Names and Faces with CHARM

Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. This week, brain coach Jim Kwik rejoins us (hear his last visit here) to share his five tips for quickly remembering names and faces -- with CHARM! Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: C: Care. People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care. Showing that you care enough about someone to remember their name is a basic demonstration of this. H: Hear. People often blame retention when they don't remember names, but it's usually a problem of attention. A: Ask. When you're introduced to someone, ask them about their name. Where's it from? How is it spelled? Who were they named after? What does it mean? R: Repeat. When you meet somebody, make sure to address them by name in the ensuing discussion. Repeating the name will help you associate their name with their face. "You want to repeat it maybe three or four times in the context of the conversation," says Jim. M: Marker. Imagine someone's name scrawled across their forehead in marker. It may sound ridiculous, but it helped Franklin Roosevelt remember the names of everyone he ever met. Minisode Monday #51 | The Great Waves of Influence

Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. This week, we've got a little lesson in art history: Katsushika Hokusai's woodblock print The Great Wave and how it was influenced by -- and went on to influence -- art from around the globe in spite of its creation during Japan's most isolated period. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: Do you think you're impervious to outside ideas -- positive or negative? Consider Katsushika Hokusai's 1829 woodblock print, Under the Wave off Kanagawa (also known as The Great Wave). This famous piece was created in Japan during a period of intense isolation -- yet it prominently displays European influence from color choice to composition. In turn, The Great Wave went on to influence artists around the globe -- again, in spite of Japan's dedication to isolation at this time in history. Influence is never something we can fight, but it's something we can be aware of so it doesn't control what we do and think without our knowledge. Minisode Monday #50 | Skill Stacking for Top Performance

Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. This week, Dilbert's Scott Adams rejoins us to talk about a concept called skill stacking -- and how it can put you in the top one percent of performers in any area (or mix of areas, as the case may be). Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: It's not good enough that you're really good at one thing -- because there are probably a lot of people who are also really good at that one thing. But if you can pick up other skills that complement this one thing -- like public speaking, persuasion, communicating, and writing -- you've got an edge. You're skill stacking. According to Scott, every skill you acquire doubles your odds of success. Scott says he's not a great artist, a great writer, the funniest person in the room, or a stellar businessperson, but his skill stacking of these talents makes him a unique force in the market. Did you know that Dilbert was the first syndicated comic on the Internet? That's because Scott had an early insight into the importance of this then-new medium. A cartoonist who is only a cartoonist might have missed out. In short: you don't have to be world-class in anything to succeed. If you're in the top twenty percent in a number of skills that go well together, you end up with unique enough skill stacking that will be sought by others. Listen to this episode to learn more about how to identify your own abilities, what abilities you can't go wrong in picking up, and how you can get to skill stacking today. Minisode Monday #49 | Stop Spreading Anxiety

Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. In this one, we talk about renegotiating the unwritten rules that allow others to exploit our anxiety and explore what we can do to put a stop to spreading this anxiety to others. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet to Stop Spreading Anxiety: While it's well known that misery loves company, company doesn't tend to love misery. When you're sharing your problems with others (and vice versa), is it in hopes of finding a solution, or just venting and spreading anxiety in an unproductive way? The correlation between reality and anxiety is tenuous. So be aware that some people do it unknowingly, while others exploit our anxiety for power, attention, or money. Like a virus, anxiety is spread more easily than ever in the age of social media. How often do you find yourself falling prey to it and passing it along to others -- it happens to all of us if we're not careful. Interrupt the pattern by realizing that someone who's trying to make you anxious is doing so by navigating unwritten rules within your relationship that you've already accepted. It's never too late to renegotiate these rules and change them for the better. Justin Wren (@TheBigPygmy) is an MMA juggernaut with the body of a Viking and the heart of a Pygmy. He's also the author of Fight for the Forgotten: How a Mixed Martial Artist Stopped Fighting for Himself and Started Fighting for Others. "Charity can be great. But opportunity is always better." -Justin Wren The Cheat Sheet: Slavery may have ended just over a hundred and fifty years ago in the United States, but Pygmy tribes in the Congo are among populations still enslaved today -- in fact, there are more slaves worldwide in 2017 than at any other time in history. With land they've inhabited for generations stolen from under them, Pygmies are considered animals by the landowners and forced into a self-perpetuating cycle of slavery. Now, MMA master Justin Wren fights for the rights of these forgotten people by helping them buy their own land, source their own clean water, and become self-sufficient. How does a clinically depressed, bullied kid become a successful mixed martial artist who raises money and awareness to free the oppressed? Minisode Monday #48 | Thinking with Your Body

Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. Dilbert's Scott Adams rejoins us to talk about using the body to gauge ideas the brain thinks up during the creative process -- and sort what works from what doesn't. "You don't have anything if you haven't moved somebody's body." -Scott Adams The Cheat Sheet for Thinking with Your Body: When trying to create something, Scott uses his body as a sensor to gauge what works and what doesn't. Scott has a process where he quickly cycles through a series of ideas. A lot of them may be good, but it's the ones that elicit a physical reaction -- usually a chuckle -- that stick. "The x factor of any kind of creative effort -- any kind of art, any kind of product -- is that little thing that just makes you go, 'Ah!' Like you feel it." Scott gives the unboxing of an Apple product as an example. Every little facet of the experience is carefully designed to make the consumer feel something. When you run your latest "great" idea past a friend, pay close attention to how their body is reacting -- it may tell you a much different story from whatever encouraging words they tell you. Minisode Monday #47 | Learning Is Earning

In this Minisode Monday, we address why graduating from school into the workforce isn't a pass to stop learning. The world is constantly changing, and the true professional is a perpetual student. Understand why learning and growth should be seen as a prerequisite for success -- not a distraction. The Cheat Sheet - Learning Is Earning Entering the workforce after graduating with a diploma or certificate or degree is no excuse to stop learning. In fact, the savvy and successful know it's just the beginning. A lawyer legally needs to keep learning just to keep his or her license, but anyone who wants to be good at what they do should follow this example -- whatever their field. In short: if you want to succeed at any level, you're never "done" learning. Learning and growth should be seen as a prerequisite for success -- not a distraction. How many books did you read last year? People at the top of their field could probably rattle off a dozen. But the average for someone who thinks they're done with learning? Fewer than one. How do you invest in your own learning? Set aside some time and read (or listen to) a book in your field. Even better: do it at work with your team. You'll see measurable results. 604: AoC Toolbox | Narrative Building

The Art of Charm (@TheArtofCharm) triumvirate of Johnny, AJ, and Jordan discuss the importance of narrative building -- taking ownership of the past, being mindful of the present, and setting sights on what we hope to accomplish in the future. To build rapport with others, we have to know our own story first. [Photo by Jonathan Kos-Read] "If you don't understand your narrative, it puts you in peril." -AJ Harbinger The Cheat Sheet: The monomyth, or the hero's journey as identified by mythologist Joseph Campbell, is a pattern that shows up in stories around the world and across cultures -- from The Odyssey to Star Wars. We all have a story -- a narrative -- that informs who we've been, who we are, and who we'll be. But are we making sure we're in control of how we process this narrative? Are you on a hero's journey or a fool's errand? It all depends on who's authoring your narrative. Shouldn't it be you? Following the narrative building exercises discussed in this toolbox episode is a good place to start. Lessons learned by the narratives of others don't necessarily enrich our own narrative -- the details that propelled your grandfather's story may not have a place in your own. It's important to have a grasp on how we relate to our own narrative; when we're confused as to who we are, what we want, or what we're doing, it's difficult for us to communicate effectively and build rapport with other people. 603: Jason Silva | Origins of a Performance Philosopher

E

Jason Silva (@JasonSilva) would have been called a "performance philosopher" by counterculture icon Timothy Leary. Among many things, he's a futurist, filmmaker, creator of short video series Shots of Awe, former host of the National Geographic Channel's Brain Games and current host of Origins: The Journey of Humankind. "In the information age, you don't teach philosophy...you perform it." -Timothy Leary "Everything I do is a response against meaninglessness." -Jason Silva The Cheat Sheet: How our concepts of self are formed -- often through the eyes of others -- and how they affect our behavior. How top performers excel by shutting down the editorial parts of the human brain coined by Buddhists as the monkey mind. Why "unscripted" isn't the same as "unprepared," and how videos can be edited to elicit altered states of consciousness. How good directors help performers get out of their heads -- while bad directors do just the opposite. How is day-to-day reality edited by context, similar to the Kuleshov effect demonstrated by Alfred Hitchcock? And so much more... Want three free rides up to $10 each? Minisode Monday #46 | Self-Sabotage Cessation

Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. This time around, we talk about the factors that lead to self-sabotage, the self-perpetuating consequences, and what we can do to put a stop to the whole mess. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: Do you agonize over the limited time available to deal with your workload -- or overall lifeload? When we're overwhelmed, a lot of things get swept under the rug. We're compelled to procrastinate, and whatever's left undone begins to build up -- which leaves us even more stressed and overwhelmed. We compare ourselves with people we know who seem to have it all together -- and our self-worth suffers as we fail to live up to what we believe should be possible. Why does this cycle of self-sabotage happen and how can we identify and put a stop to it? Some suggestions: eliminate distraction, change your environment, use the pomodoro technique, and try James Clear's two-minute rule. Here are some episodes related to self-sabotage and what we gain by defeating it: Nir Eyal | Hooked on Technology (Episode 431) Cal Newport | Deep Work (Episode 515) Tim Urban | Wait But Why (Episode 522) Barbara Oakley | Learning How to Learn (Episode 440) James Clear | Mental Models (Episode 592) To learn more about social dynamics and productivity hacks, take the Art of Charm Challenge by clicking here, or text CHARMED to 33444.
