Contrast this with an expert who approaches that same problem as someone who usually has all the answers. When an expert is stumped, the problem remains unsolved. But the amateur, not knowing any better, can often approach the problem from an angle the expert never even considered. Where repetition numbs the expert, an amateur's relative incompetence begets innovation. Call it beginner's luck if you like, but no matter how new you are to the banquet, you've probably got something to bring to the table. Acknowledge which of these two types of decisions we're making: inconsequential or defining moments. When you come to a defining moment, ask: a) What are my options? and b) What are the possible outcomes? Then choose the outcome most congruent with your absolute truths. Even if this process forces you to make tough choices, it should keep you from making regrettable ones. As Cole says, it helps us avoid "making a long-term decision to solve a short-term problem." Never let it be said that The Art of Charm would discourage you from being the best you can be. But have you considered the merits of lowering the bar? Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: Setting your bar for success too high can result in the opposite of the desired effect. Rather than putting yourself in the path of a disempowering emotional state, consider the merits of lowering the bar. Focusing on goals that are far away or can only be experienced in a distant (or alternative) future means we never really experience rewards for our efforts. Instead of saying something like, "I'll be happy when I'm thin and muscular," say, "I'll be happy when I go to the gym." Immediately achievable goals set by a lower bar are far more effective in getting you to your desired target emotion than the cycle of failure triggered by a bar set too high. This Minisode Monday, we examine how even the most reliable news sources and documentary makers skew the facts or present half-truths when reporting -- often unintentionally -- we just don't notice it unless it happens to be about something with which we're already familiar. It's a reminder to always consider multiple sources if we want to be truly informed on any subject. The Cheat Sheet: We all get news from somewhere. But how do we know our sources are reputable? The truth is, even with the best of intentions, every journalist gets it wrong sometimes -- because nobody's an expert at everything. Chances are pretty good you've been aghast at poor media coverage of a subject in which you consider yourself well informed -- at least once in the entire time you've been consuming news and documentaries. Watch a media production by a news agency or a journalist about a subject in which you are an expert. Take note of the gaps in the coverage. We tend to notice such gaps when we have a good grasp on the subject itself; consider the stories about things we know very little about and understand that there are probably just as many gaps -- before getting riled up, outraged, or moved to action without weighing separate sources on the subject. The Cheat Sheet: Suppressing emotions is like putting a bandage over an infected wound -- it's only putting unpleasantness out of sight, not healing it. Even if it makes you feel silly, you need to acknowledge the true set of emotions you're having in order to process and move on. One way to do this is to write down your emotions. Are you hurting? Ashamed? Jotting it all down and noting how comfortable or uncomfortable these emotions make you feel forces you to face what you might otherwise be subconsciously avoiding. Give it a try this week as a first important step to breaking the habit of suppressing emotions. It may be odd at first, but it will become more natural over time as it becomes part of your routine. Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. "You think you're ordering a coffee, but you're also sending non-verbal signals out the entire time. What do those signals communicate?" -Jordan Harbinger In this Minisode Monday, we talk about the messages we're sending and receiving between the lines when we communicate both verbally and non-verbally -- and how we can hone the way we send and receive for greater clarity. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet for Communication Between the Lines: Intentionally expressed or not, there's always something going on between the lines when it comes to communication -- whether it's verbal or non-verbal. This between-the-lines message may not only be unintentional -- its interpretation may be faulty on the receiving end because non-verbal communication isn't necessarily universal. How can we get a grip on the signals we send -- and ensure we're not misinterpreting the signals we're receiving? To calibrate the way we send and receive signals, we should take note of how -- for instance -- someone using quickspeech or dismissive body language makes us feel. Then, think about situations in which we might be giving off similar signals to others. We can constantly learn from these interactions to better control the signals we're sending out -- and taking in -- between the lines. Ever get upset by rude comments on the Internet? In this Minisode Monday, we share an effective strategy for dealing with this that we learned from Jay Baer, author of Hug Your Haters: How to Embrace Complaints and Keep Your Customers. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: You can post anything online -- videos of puppies eating birthday cake -- and someone will eventually show up to leave a hateful or hurtful comment. If you're immune to the impact of anonymous rudeness on the Internet, you're better than most of us. But if you're not, Jay Baer recommends a simple strategy: treat your haters like toddlers. Think about it: if you're enjoying yourself at a dinner party and your host's three-year-old wanders into the room and makes fun of your pants, you probably won't care. We don't tend to give toddlers much credit for having an informed opinion about anything, nor do we rely on their sense of taste. So would we get upset at a toddler and try to "set them straight" in such a situation? Next time someone brings you down on purpose, tries to sabotage you, or makes you feel small in some way, just think of that hater as a toddler -- and treat him or her accordingly.
