Minisode Monday #70 | How to Control Emotional Feedback with CIRCA
Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. When something goes wrong in our lives, sometimes we fixate on its emotional impact -- how it makes us feel in the moment -- rather than what difference it will make in the long run (which may be minimal). Tinker Dabble Doodle Try: Unlock the Power of the Unfocused Mind author Dr. Srini Pillay shows us how to control this emotional feedback with the CIRCA mnemonic. Make sure to check out his entire episode: The Power of the Unfocused Mind, and his other Minisode Monday: Dabbling: Not Just for Dilettantes! The Cheat Sheet: When something goes wrong in your life, ask yourself: is this important, or just traumatic? We can gauge this by using the CIRCA mnemonic. C: Chunking. Break down the problem into its component parts; solve it over a period of time. I: Ignore mental chatter. Observe your thoughts; don't become your thoughts. R: Reality check. Remind yourself that "this too shall pass." C: Control check. Is the problem something you actually have a hand in, or is it something like weather or politics? A: Attention shift. Move your attention from the problem (the past) to the solution (the future). Here's our advice for handling them with grace and...charm. Learning to run your own business doesn't have to be a sink or swim proposition if you start it as a side hustle to your main job. How long should you give a new job a chance before deciding it's not what you signed up for and move on? Minisode Monday #69 | Why You Should Record Your Conversations with Strangers
Rob Reid (@Rob_Reid), author of After On: A Novel of Silicon Valley, will be joining us for a full episode tomorrow. But on this Minisode Monday, we share one of his exercises designed to help us cut back on some of the bad habits we have when conversing and relating with others. The Cheat Sheet: Over the next few weeks or months, record ten hours of conversations with people -- acquaintances, strangers, Lyft drivers, whoever -- using something like a voice memos app or Ecamm Call Recorder on Skype. Listen to yourself with a critical ear. It will impart priceless knowledge about how you come across to other people. We all have annoying habits we're wholly unaware of. But we also have budding conversational superpowers that we could nurture if we only knew they were lurking at the surface. Ten hours is a lot. It will make you cringe. It will also help you get rid of filler words, tics, and other unintentional habits for leaner, more powerful conversations. Get out of your comfort zone and get recording! Fan Mail Friday #130 | The Other Guy in the Glass
Time for Fan Mail Friday, where we'll be answering your questions and dropping some knowledge and feedback to help you kick the weekend off right. Let's cut to it! In this episode: When you're a young female moving to a new city, is looking for roommates on Craigslist advisable? Thanks to Jeff McCollister (@the1hatter) for giving us a proper source for The Guy in the Glass poem we talked about last week. It was written in 1934 by Peter "Dale" Wimbrow Sr., who was not a death row inmate -- in spite of what the Internet tries to tell us. Regardless, it's still very powerful. Tipping isn't just good manners -- it's good social dynamics. If you're going to change your dietary habits, make sure it's for the right reasons and not because you were swayed by an AoC Challenge critical-thinking exercise! What's wrong with being sexy? You shouldn't start a podcast unless you don't care if people listen. Documentary of the Week: Icarus Quick shoutouts to Colin and Runa Ludthard and AoC sister Lida in Sweden! Minisode Monday #68 | An Everyday Way to Renew Contact with Old Acquaintances
Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. This time around, we talk about an easy, everyday habit you can cultivate to renew contact with old acquaintances (lest they -- and you -- be forgot)! Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: Every single day, text one or two people with whom you haven't spoken in a while. If you use social media: As guest David Burkus recommended when he was on the show: use your newsfeed. Instead of merely "liking" something about which your old acquaintance is posting on social media, send a text or email. If you don't use social media, open your phone's text messaging app and scroll all the way down -- the people at the bottom are the ones you haven't spoken to in ages. Greet them with a sentence or two to let them know you're thinking of them, and make it clear a return response isn't required. Let us know how you put today's Minisode Monday into practice! Minisode Monday #67 | Dabbling: Not Just for Dilettantes
Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. Tinker Dabble Doodle Try: Unlock the Power of the Unfocused Mind author Dr. Srini Pillay rejoins us to talk about how we can benefit from the seemingly meandering path of dabbling to unlock creativity and make useful connections between disparate interests. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: If you're only looking forward and focusing on a task you've set out to tackle, your brain is only using a small portion of its resources. To access the rest, understand the power of dabbling. We need regular distractions from our primary course of action -- like hobbies. If you engage in a hobby for one hour a day, you can prolong life and protect your brain from dementia. Hobbies also trigger the brain's unfocused mode, which activates your creative circuits and helps you make connections you might otherwise miss. It was by this dabbling that Steve Jobs applied what he learned in calligraphy class to create fonts for Apple. This week, make sure to listen to Dr. Srini Pillay's full episode on harnessing the power of your unfocused mind and give some thought to how it can help you connect your own disparate interests. Minisode Monday #66 | Doing the Hard Thing Is Easy
Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. This time around, we discuss how going just a little out of your way to make someone else's day better has more mileage than any minor inconvenience you may experience in that fleeting moment. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: It's easy to ignore small tasks that someone else usually takes care of. But what happens when we take a minor detour from our own routine to help lighten someone else's load? As we soon discover, doing the hard thing isn't usually that hard. As Jocko Willink might agree, this is a form of taking ownership (though perhaps not as extreme as some of his own examples). Doing small favors takes little effort, but results in big appreciation. Find an opportunity to go above and beyond this week -- whether it's cleaning up after a clumsy pet, washing the dishes, or sweeping the neighbor's walkway -- doing the hard thing is easy. Why the content of what we worry about is far less important than the process of how worry operates. Minisode Monday #65 | The Advantages of Being an Amateur
Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. This time we examine why being an amateur sometimes works to your advantage when you're tackling a problem that all the experts say is unsolvable. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: When you're an amateur trying to solve a problem, you don't know what doesn't work. Contrast this with an expert who approaches that same problem as someone who usually has all the answers. When an expert is stumped, the problem remains unsolved. But the amateur, not knowing any better, can often approach the problem from an angle the expert never even considered. Where repetition numbs the expert, an amateur's relative incompetence begets innovation. Call it beginner's luck if you like, but no matter how new you are to the banquet, you've probably got something to bring to the table. Minisode Monday #64 | How to Make Decisions with Absolute Truths
Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. In this Minisode Monday, friend and former guest Cole Hatter of Thrive (September 29th-October 1st, 2017 in Las Vegas -- use promo code AOC at checkout for a big, big discount if you're planning on going) joins us to explain how we can ensure we're making the best decisions by using absolute truths to guide us. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: We're all the products of our decisions -- so how do we ensure we're making the right decisions that will benefit us in the long run? Create absolute truths -- core values or beliefs -- in relationships, career, health, and spirituality. These absolute truths act as compasses toward which we align our decisions. Acknowledge which of these two types of decisions we're making: inconsequential or defining moments. When you come to a defining moment, ask: a) What are my options? and b) What are the possible outcomes? Then choose the outcome most congruent with your absolute truths. Even if this process forces you to make tough choices, it should keep you from making regrettable ones. As Cole says, it helps us avoid "making a long-term decision to solve a short-term problem." Minisode Monday #63 | Are You Setting the Bar Too High?
Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. Never let it be said that The Art of Charm would discourage you from being the best you can be. But have you considered the merits of lowering the bar? Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: Setting your bar for success too high can result in the opposite of the desired effect. Rather than putting yourself in the path of a disempowering emotional state, consider the merits of lowering the bar. Focusing on goals that are far away or can only be experienced in a distant (or alternative) future means we never really experience rewards for our efforts. Instead of saying something like, "I'll be happy when I'm thin and muscular," say, "I'll be happy when I go to the gym." Immediately achievable goals set by a lower bar are far more effective in getting you to your desired target emotion than the cycle of failure triggered by a bar set too high. Minisode Monday #62 | It's All Fake News If We Pick and Choose
This Minisode Monday, we examine how even the most reliable news sources and documentary makers skew the facts or present half-truths when reporting -- often unintentionally -- we just don't notice it unless it happens to be about something with which we're already familiar. It's a reminder to always consider multiple sources if we want to be truly informed on any subject. The Cheat Sheet: We all get news from somewhere. But how do we know our sources are reputable? The truth is, even with the best of intentions, every journalist gets it wrong sometimes -- because nobody's an expert at everything. Chances are pretty good you've been aghast at poor media coverage of a subject in which you consider yourself well informed -- at least once in the entire time you've been consuming news and documentaries. Watch a media production by a news agency or a journalist about a subject in which you are an expert. Take note of the gaps in the coverage. We tend to notice such gaps when we have a good grasp on the subject itself; consider the stories about things we know very little about and understand that there are probably just as many gaps -- before getting riled up, outraged, or moved to action without weighing separate sources on the subject. Minisode Monday #61 | Acknowledging vs. Suppressing Emotions
Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. Are there any benefits to suppressing emotions vs. acknowledging them? Here's an exercise to ensure you're doing the right thing. Many thanks to recent guest and How Emotions Are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain author Lisa Feldman Barrett (hear her full show here) for helping put this one together! The Cheat Sheet: Suppressing emotions is like putting a bandage over an infected wound -- it's only putting unpleasantness out of sight, not healing it. Even if it makes you feel silly, you need to acknowledge the true set of emotions you're having in order to process and move on. One way to do this is to write down your emotions. Are you hurting? Ashamed? Jotting it all down and noting how comfortable or uncomfortable these emotions make you feel forces you to face what you might otherwise be subconsciously avoiding. Give it a try this week as a first important step to breaking the habit of suppressing emotions. It may be odd at first, but it will become more natural over time as it becomes part of your routine. Fan Mail Friday #122 | Well Played, Sugar Nuts
Time for Fan Mail Friday, where we'll be answering your questions and dropping some knowledge and feedback to help you kick the weekend off right. In this episode: As a "nice guy," how do you let go of an ex -- who attempted suicide when your relationship ended -- without feeling heartless? Listener feedback for Nouveau Tech (from FMF 119) about how to respond next time the opportunistic entrepreneur ex makes contact. Listener Sweet Cheeks weighs in on what she does when male coworkers dismiss her statements with infantilizing condescension. Sometimes even gun-toting manly men need real talk from honest friends -- boundaries be damned! When you're fresh out of college, don't be too quick to dismiss the experience you can get in your ideal field from working at a non-ideal place of employment. Listener Westbound and Down tells us how he used Reddit to ask questions of locals prior to moving to a new town. Is there a kind way to discourage stalker-like attention from a socially awkward person without crushing their ego? Can you help people get through the ordeal of being bullied without disclosing specific details surrounding your own ordeal? How does Jordan's advice in MM 57 to "treat everyone [we] meet as if [we're] going to know each other forever" apply if the person we're meeting happens to be a jerk right off the bat? Why Chase considers polygraph tests "just about as accurate as a coin toss" -- and how they're actually biased against people who tell the truth. Minisode Monday #60 | Hacking Motivation with Value Languages
Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. Vanessa Van Edwards (check out our full episode with her here) rejoins us to talk about value languages -- the motivations we have for entering into relationships with each other. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: Ever wondered how to hack motivation? It begins by understanding what people really want out of a relationship. If you think about it, all relationships are transactions in which we give and take resources. Value languages are what we hope to get out of a relationship; they can be any of the following: Information Goods Status Service Love Money Vanessa gives us ways to practice how to recognize what value languages are being used in our own relationships so we can best address the motivations behind them. Minisode Monday #59 | How to Overcome Default Friendships
Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. This week, we're taking a little friendship audit to determine if we're hanging out with people by default or if we're actually enriching each other by association. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: Personal development giant Jim Rohn famously said that we are the average of the five people with whom we spend the most time. How intentional are you about your friendships? What's the criteria for the people you choose to spend time with? Here's an exercise designed not to alienate you from your default friends, but to get you thinking about how -- and why -- you spend your time with each other. Write down your fifteen closest friends and why you're friends. Are you friends because you grew up on the same block, or are you friends because you have legitimate connections that elevate both of you by association? Reach out to the people on your list who made the cut and let them know why you like them. It may seem weird at first, but it's more appreciated and friendship affirming than you realize. Minisode Monday #58 | Chris Hadfield: Boss In Space
Commander Chris Hadfield (check out our full episode with him here) was the first Canadian to walk in space, but the experience went far from smoothly. In this Minisode Monday, he explains how he went temporarily blind but still managed to finish the task before him -- and what we on Earth might learn from his ordeal. The Cheat Sheet: Humans didn't evolve in zero gravity; you can never overtrain for life in orbit. If you can't navigate to the bathroom in the middle of the night, imagine trying to build a robot in space without being able to see. When something goes wrong, an astronaut must heed the immortal words of Douglas Adams: "Don't panic." We could all learn from what Chris Hadfield did when he found himself blind in space. What would you do if you were in his astroboots? To learn more about social dynamics and productivity hacks, take the Art of Charm Challenge by clicking here, or text CHARMED to 33444.
