Ep 261Matt Parrino, Buffalo Bills Reporter

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran catches up with Buffalo Bills beat reporter and accomplished podcaster, recurring guest Matt Parrino about a wide range of topics including how things have been over the past six months, the evolution of his podcast that’s become quite successful, the Buffalo Bills, Lebron vs Jordan, the public demise of Marc Miller and much more. Matt’s been a favorite guest of the podcast several times previously including live shows done over wings at Audubon North and Casey’s in Black Rock. However, Matt hasn’t been on the podcast since back on episode No. 210 back in early April and Patrick spends time learning how life’s been for Matt during these weird and often trying times, including a discussion of how radically different the job of being a NFL team beat reporter has changed in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic. That ranges from regular team coverage to interview as well as overall team access and Matt pulls back the curtain a little bit on what it’s been like. They also spend time talking about the Shout Buffalo Football podcast Matt has started with his “tag team” partner at NYup.com, Ryan Talbot. In less than six months the podcast has already grown by leaps and bounds especially on the video side, where their regular livestream shows often generate at least a few thousand people watching live on various platforms. Matt describes the decision that went into the podcast, the process of how it’s done and reveals a few of his favorite episodes and guests he’s had on to this point. Of course, they also spend time discussing the Buffalo Bills, including their surprisingly (mostly) dominant opening month, Josh Allen’s emergence as a legitimate early season league MVP candidate, the struggles of the defense, injuries and concerns about the team competing against the Covid infested Tennessee Titans on Tuesday night. You can follow Matt on Twitter @MattParrino and of course be sure to check out his work at NYup.com as well as subscribe to his podcast, which again is killing it. Ep 257Joe Yerdon Talks Undefeated Bills & Jack Eichel

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has as chat with sports writer and recurring guest Joe Yerdon to discuss the Buffalo Bills undefeated 3-0 start, Jack Eichel trade chatter and much more. The Bills dominated the Los Angeles Rams for two and a half quarters on Sunday before blowing a 25-point lead and needing a last minute touchdown to move to 3-0 on the season. As he’s done in all three games this season, Josh Allen played at a league MVP level. Patrick and Joe discuss Allen’s physical prowess but also his ability to stop the dominoes from all falling once he started unraveling in the second half. They also discuss how Stefon Diggs’ presence continues to have a positive impact on the entire offense, Brian Daboll’s masterclass of play calling and Devin Singletary having a big-time statement game with rookie Zack Moss out. They also discuss an ailing defense that has put together uncharacteristically mediocre performances. Injuries were an excuse in Miami but not Sunday at home. Joe has takes on his level of concern over it, including Tremaine Edmunds looking lost at times in the middle of the defense, the lack of a pass rush and examining how much slack the defense deserves because it was going against one of the league’s better offenses. They also spend some time talking Buffalo Sabres, including reaction from a series of tweets from NHL insider Bob McKenzie centered around reported Jack Eichel trade chatter and McKenzie’s statement that Eichel doesn’t want out right now but is clearly frustrated over five years of losing. Joe discusses what the Sabres can and need to do in order to help their captain and best player this season before things get to the point where he is actually does end up demanding a trade, including his take on the Eric Staal trade and what a rapidly approaching realistic offseason plan may look like. Plus, is Joe team fall is elite or team summertime is the best? All that and much more during this fun conversation. Ep 256Buffalo Bills Reality Checkcast With Joe

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a chat with highly opinionated friend, social media personality and recurring guest Joe from NYC (@BuffaloWins) on the Buffalo Bills impressive start and if it’s real or just a façade. The guys spend the first half of the episode singing the praises of the Bills and the impressive fashion in which they’ve beaten a pair of divisional foes to begin the season. Josh Allen looks like a very early NFL MVP candidate as offensive coordinator Brian Daboll is showing an abundance of confidence in putting games more on the arms and legs of his quarterback. Allen’s not doing it alone, however as Stefon Diggs has been arguably even better than anyone anticipated after joining Buffalo in a trade. Joe points out the chemistry between Allen and Diggs makes them look like they’ve played together for five years. There’s also praise for John Brown, Cole Beasley and an underrated offensive line as well as an adequate job by the defense that’s already been down three key starters through just two games. But it’s time to pump the brakes on purchasing home playoff game tickets just yet as the guys examine some holes in the Bills defense as things stand while also talking up the impressive slate of opponents the Bills face in the coming weeks. Joe offers a prediction for Sunday’s matchup with the Rams and also has takes on Tyrod Taylor and Skip Bayless. Following the segment, Patrick does his weekly Friday episode “Pat’s Picks” after going 11-4 against the spread last week and 20-9-1 through the first two weeks. Ep 255Kris Baker Talks Bills (and Sabres)

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a chat with Buffalo Sabres prospects analysis and for today, well-rounded sports media personality Kris Baker on a variety of topics involving the Sabres and the undefeated Buffalo Bills. The Bills have won both their games to begin the season with both wins coming at the expense of divisional rivals. Sunday was at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami as Buffalo was victorious behind the lights out performance for Josh Allen, who is ending debate from even the most harsh critics on whether he’s a legitimate franchise quarterback. Allen was fantastic in Miami as was the rest of the offense. The defense struggled minus key linebackers Tremaine Edmunds and Matt Milano but nonetheless made enough plays to help secure the victory. Patrick and Kris break the game down and provide plenty of insight and takes along the way. Of course, in the hockey world Buffalo made a significant trade last week, dealing forward Marcus Johansson to Minnesota in exchange for Eric Staal. Kris provides insight into the trade, how he thinks Staal will fit in and who his addition may benefit the most. The guys also look forward to the offseason coming up soon and what Kris is hoping to see the organization do. They also discuss Patrick watching high school football in Florida alongside plenty of fans and what that experience was like in this Covid-19 world, golf’s present and future, favorite TV shows and much more. Ep 253Good, Bad & Ugly — Bills Dominate The Jets

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, the Buffalo Bills dominated the New York Jets in their season opener and Patrick Moran is joined by recurring guest Aaron Quinn from Cover 1 Buffalo podcast to discuss the good, bad and ugly of it all. Aaron returns to the show for a second straight week and there’s plenty to discuss on the heels of Buffalo’s 27-17 victory over the Jets in a game that frankly wasn’t as close as the final score indicates. The guys spending plenty of time discussing Josh Allen, who had a career-best passing game as well as 57 yards rushing and a touchdown but wasn’t without flaws. Aaron gives an honest assessment of his performance and why it’s time to learn to accept who he is as a quarterback and that today’s NFL is trending more towards guys like him. They also discuss the instant impact Stefon Diggs provided to the offense not just for himself but also for his teammates John Brown and Cole Beasley as well as the semi-surprise of Cody Ford opening the season at right guard with Darryl Williams at right tackle. The defense was solid and Patrick highlights two players in particular who had great season debuts— Mario Addison and one of Aaron’s favorite players, Trent Murphy. Murphy, who including last year’s playoff game has seven sacks over his last seven games as is playing well enough to keep second-round rookie A.J. Epenesa inactive. Not all went perfect for Buffalo even in victory, however, and the guys talk about Allen’s two ugly turnovers and a missed opportunity for a third touchdown pass as well as the struggles of the running game and a brutal career debut for kicker Tyler Bass. They wrap by discussing what they think they’ve learned about the team after one game, a look ahead to Miami next week and a peak around some of the more notable games around the NFL this past weekend. Of course, they also spend plenty of time talking about the Buffalo Bills on the heels of NFL cut down day. E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a chat with longtime Buffalo Bills beat reporter from the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle, Sal Maiorana on a variety of topics spanning the Buffalo Bills as well as life changes during these trying times and his personal website that combines news with nostalgia. Sal recalls getting into the business all the way back in 1982 and covering the Buffalo Bills full-time for the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle beginning in 1990, the first of four consecutive Buffalo Super Bowl appearances. The guys then get into a discussion on how much things have changed today because of Covid-19 with respect to how people in his profession have to do their job. Sal reveals that after covering every game home and on the road for over 30 years, he’s only made the trek from Rochester to Buffalo for two training camp practices so far and that aside from the season opener he may not even be in the stadium for games this season. Sal also talks about the annoying if not impossible task of putting together unique content during these times because of incredibly restricted team access and in ability to talk to several people for a singular feature story. They also talk baseball as both Patrick and Sal are lifelong Yankee fans and lament the fact that the top players continue to consistently be injured, prompting Sal to conclude the Yankees get more injured than most NFL teams. Ep 244Joe Yerdon, Sports Media Personality

E

On the episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, it’s a #HireJoeYerdon Friday as Patrick Moran is joined by hockey writer/sports personality to talk about a variety of Buffalo sports topics as well as NHL playoffs. Showing he’s capable of talking about more than hockey, Joe has thoughts on the Buffalo Bills signing head coach Sean McDermott to a six-year extension, the significance of culture as well as Dion Dawkins also signing an extension and thoughts about guys playing out the final year of their contracts. They also spend some time talking baseball on the heels of two Toronto Blue Jays games in Buffalo this week in addition to a candid discussion if Western New York would be able to support a MLB franchise. Of course, hockey talk is still Joe’s go-to and Patrick tasks him with trying to sell a largely disgruntled Sabres fan base why it’s time to start being excited about the potential of the team going forward. Joe also has thoughts on the NHL playoffs so far, a Stanley Cup prediction and much more. Follow Joe on Twitter @JoeYerdon for updates on his media appearances and other updates. Ep 243Steve Mathes, Buffalo Fanatics

E

On this episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran is joined by The Bills Guys podcast co-host Steve Mathes of the Buffalo Fanatics podcasting network for a conversation focused on the Buffalo Bills and Sabres. Ed Oliver spoke to the media via a Zoom presser on Monday for the first time since originally being arrested in May and ultimately being cleared of any wrongdoing. His comments were enlightening and interesting, ranging from his mindset at the of his arrest until now and how he feels about the justice system currently. The guys play a few clips and react to comments, including Steve pointing out the frustration he’d feel if it were him and Patrick admitting that he prejudged Oliver as guilty of a few months ago without knowing all the evidence. They also discuss the possibility of the NFL potentially playing regular Saturday and perhaps even Friday nights game this season with the growing probability that they’ll be no college football this fall, with both agreeing it will be good for fans but a struggle with schematics not to mention most players probably hating the idea. They also spend some time talking Sabres, including a hyped official Sabres award series on social media that produced just three on-ice awards. One of them went to Kyle Okposo and the guys have strong takes on that and a few more awards that should’ve been handed out as well as reaction to the New York Rangers winning the NHL draft lottery on Monday night. They wrap up by spending a few minutes talking about the Toronto Blue Jays starting to play some home games at Sahlen’s field beginning this week. You can follow Steve on Twitter @JudgeMathes and be sure to check out The Bills Guys alongside co-host David Tilton on both Mondays and Thursdays. Before talking to Steve, Patrick speaks of the anxiety that’s been plaguing him personally over the potential of high school football in Florida getting cancelled and the strong possibility that in-person school won’t have sustainability anywhere. He also reveals to Steve that he’s been working on a monster-sized quiz of his favorite TV show ever, The Office. Ep 242Ten Most Irreplaceable Buffalo Bills

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran chats with recurring guest and friend Joe (@BuffaloWins) about their list of the 10 most irreplaceable players on the Buffalo Bills. While Patrick and Joe rate them differently they agree with nine of the ten spots: Micah Hyde, Mitch Morse, Stefon Diggs, Ed Oliver, Matt Milano, Dion Dawkins, Tremaine Edmunds, Tre White and Josh Allen. The lone difference comes with Patrick explaining why he has John Brown on the list and Joe debating why Jerry Hughes made his over Brown. Things stay cordially until the subject of Tre White nearly opting out this past week comes up. At that point after a lengthy take from Joe on Buffalo Bills twitter Patrick gets angry at a condescending tweet to Bills fans from a national media member, which sets off fireworks between the guys. It’s hard hitting episode that’ll have you wondering if Patrick and Joe are really friends or if they actually hate each other. Patrick and Nate discuss some of the reasons why so many are high are on Buffalo, including examining quarterback Josh Allen being ranked among the Top 100 players in the league among his peers. Also, can Allen actually be a top five MVP candidate? The guys also spend time talking about the Stefon Diggs addition, , if the defensive line is in even better shape than last year despite losing two key sack contributors to free agency and wondering if likely not having fans in the stadium this season will have an impact on the Bills 2020 forecast. Ep 239Barry McCockiner, Content Creator

E

On this special episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has an interview with one of the biggest lightning rods in sports and social media. Barry McCockiner joins the podcast for a rare interview on several different topics ranging from history to humor with tons of sports talk along the way. Barry McCockiner is a troop lover, seven-time racism hater honoree, advocate against marijuana overdose and probably has been suspended from Twitter more times than anyone in recorded history. He’s also incredibly knowledgeable with sports, particularly with football and basketball and the guys discuss it all. Barry explains how he grew his brand and that it took years to see his following grow into the tens of thousands. They also discuss some of his best trolls, if there’s a line he’s crossed he regrets and the method in which he balances humor with substance in his persona. They also discuss Barry growing his presence through his Class Act Podcast and his YouTube channel, including the time-consuming work that goes into producing his content. Of course there’s plenty of sports talk and Buffalo Bills fans will be delighted to hear a trademark Barry McCockiner rant against the guy he considers the most overrated athlete in sports history, Tom Brady, as well as thoughts on if Buffalo will overtake New England in the AFC East this year. They finish up with some hoops talk, including Stephen Curry’s zero Finals MVPs and Kevin Durant being a coward before wrapping up with deep takes on why he thinks Lebron James and not Michael Jordan is the greatest of all-time. It’s great stuff with one of social media’s most entertaining personalities. Follow Barry on Twitter @MegaracismHater, check out his Class Act Podcast and sure to subscribe to his YouTube Channel. Ep 238The Randomcast With Joe

E

On this episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast it’s the Randomcast With Joe. Patrick Moran is joined by recurring guest and friend Joe and the guys hit on a bunch of topics primarily focused on baseball, football and arguing. Here’s a spoiler alert— Patrick and Joe pretty much disagree on everything and things get particularly heated during a discussion on the significance of the NFL preseason slate being wiped out. Tim Graham of The Athletic recently published an interview with Buddy Nix where the former Buffalo Bills general manger says that he was very high on Russell Wilson going into the 2012 NFL draft but missed out on him by a half round. The article also features claims from former QB coach David Lee that he badly wanted Dak Prescott in the 2016 draft but Doug Whaley was locked on Cardale Jones. Patrick and Joe wonder out loud how truthful Nix and Lee are being with their comments. They also talk about the social and economic windfalls of the Toronto Blue Jays playing their reduced MLB home schedule in Buffalo this summer, Ed Oliver being wrongly arrested a couple of months ago and how it’s more than just the police that are to blame in what’s pretty much a lengthy argument disguised as a podcast episode. Follow Patrick on Twittter @PatMoranTweets and follow Joe on Twitter @BuffaloWins. Ep 237Charlie Specht, WKBW-TV

E

On this episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a conversation with WKBW-TV chief investigative reporter Charlie Specht on a wide variety of topics spanning his life and award-winning career. Charlie talks about being born in South Buffalo and living there until he was 10 before moving to the suburbs and eventually going to Iroquois high school, where as an athlete he nearly won a state championship in football. Charlie would go onto college at St. Bonaventure, where he initially had dreams of becoming a sports reporter. Expanding on his early career dreams, Charlie tells the story of being a finalist for a sports writing internship at The Buffalo News but lost out on the opportunity to Tyler Dunne, who after two stints with TBN is now a highly acclaimed national reporter at The Bleacher Report. Charlie would go on to work at The News in a non-sports capacity for three and half years and reveals how a newspaper column there after he left ultimately led to him applying and getting his career launched at WKBW-TV in 2016. They discuss some of Charlie’s well documented work and the many accolades have have come has with it. Unfortunately there’s also a dark side to being an investigative reporter and they discuss a death threat made to Charlie that’s incredibly chilling and led to an arrest. The guys also spend some time talking about the Buffalo and Charlie discusses what is he loves about the city so much and of course, they finish up with the traditional Fun Fact Finale where we learn a ton of quirky things about one of the most decorated investigative reporters the Western New York community has seen in quite a while. Ep 236Rico, Buffalo Fanatics Content Creator

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran is joined by Rico, a Buffalo Bills content creator over at Buffalo Fanatics. The guys, as Rico likes to say “chop it up” on a variety of topics including the Buffalo Bills, content creating, branding and a thoroughly heavy discussion on racism. Racial and social unjust have been at a fevered pitch in the United States lately and a series of tweets recently by a fellow Buffalo Bills content creator have led to heated feelings on social media. Patrick and Rico address the tweets and have an open and candid conversation about race, what often makes us a product of it and why environmental upbringing is no longer excusable. They also talk about holding those accountable for feelings and statements and the importance of dialogue and education, as opposed to automatically “cancelling” someone, which leads to silence and therefore no progress. Beyond that Rico dives into the Buffalo Fanatics brand, talking their history that includes starting as a Facebook group in 2013 and how the Bills sent them a cease and decease. He talks about some of the talent on the BF roster, the grind that comes with putting out content consistently and the significance of engagement with fans. They do spend a little time talking the Bills and Rico highlights three things that should have Bills fans worried about the 2020 roster as well as three things that should have fans excited. It’s a conversation that combines some traditional fun but’s also layered with topics that are sometimes uncomfortable to talk about but need to be discussed. You can follow Rico on Twitter @RealRico_BF and check out his as well as all Buffalo Fanatics content on their YouTube Channel. Ep 235Joe Yerdon, Hockey Writer

E

On today’s future award-wining Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a conversation with recurring guest Joe Yerdon on a variety of topics including Covid-19 costing him his job, the Buffalo Sabres and a fun series of brain busters revolving around boring movie descriptions. Joe covered the Buffalo Sabres for The Athletic but because the Sabres haven’t played since March and likely won’t again until at least January due to Covid-19, was recently laid off as were several writers across The Athletic brand. Joe clearly has a lot of emotions over what happens and gets some of it off his chest, sharing the process of a company-wide meeting that ultimately led to his dismissal as well as 45 other writers on the staff. Emotionally charged, Joe talks on the difficulty working in an industry that’s on such shaky ground in the foreseeable future because of the pandemic and that at least for the time being, hockey practices starting again in advance of the playoffs has him feeling down. They also spend a few minutes discussing the Sabres and Joe tells a tale of now former general manager Jason Botterill calling him after Joe got laid off, a gesture that totally resonated with him. Also, inspired by a tweet that went viral, Patrick puts Joe and the listeners through a series of cinematic brain busters. Patrick reads off a series of intentionally boring descriptions of popular flicks and Joe is tasked at trying to figure out what the movies are. You can follow Joe on Twitter @JoeYerdon. Take advantage of an opportunity to win a free large pizza AND 20 wings from Macy’s Place Pizzeria. Ep 234The RANTCAST With Joe

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, the cancel culture may not be to unify here as Patrick Moran and recurring guest & friend Joe do their best to get themselves cancelled with this pod’s first-ever Rantcast—an entire episode worth of the guys ranting and complaining about almost everything. It’s a vocal train wreck but one you can’t stop listening too. Nothing is off limits in this session. From fans and media speculating what Josh Allen’s imminent pay day will be after Patrick Mahomes signed for over $500 million to why Joe flat-out thinks is Pegula S&E going broke, today’s literally a non-stop verbal roller coaster of rants. Other topics include some media and fans coming up with stupid trade scenarios for Buffalo Sabres star Jack Eichel, NFL policy calling for 60 minutes of physical game contract but no exchanging or jerseys post-game, if there will be fans in stadiums for sports in 2020 and WWE becoming completely unwatchable. There’s several rants and discussions about meaningful life topics too— including the necessity of wearing a mask, Patrick angry about the lack of backlash from anti-Semitic comments from Desean Jackson, today’s America being about personal freedom over the welfare of your country, cancel culture, Donald Trump and much more. Patrick also complains about not receiving enough credit for Macy’s Place Pizzeria’s rising mainstream popularity and pisses off Joe because he sort of likes Barstool Sports. Meanwhile, Joe has a beef with golf and sports media members who tweet about it. Yeah…It’s that bad. Make sure you listen anyway. Ep 233Gill Byrd, Former NFL Star

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a chat with former San Diego Chargers star and team Hall of Famer, Gill Byrd on a wide variety of topics spanning his life and career. Gill talks about growing up as a child in the San Francisco area, originally into judo as a kid in lieu of football. In fact, he didn’t even start playing football until at least 12 years and only did so to feel more involved in family conversations about the sport. He became a star running back and defensive back and Lowell High School but didn’t receive any scholarships because of his smallish size. He walked onto to San Jose State and five years later would transform himself into a first-round pick. In fact, Byrd was selected 22nd overall in the 1983 NFL draft by the Chargers, largely considered the greatest collection of first-round talent in the history of the league. Byrd was on a list of first-rounders that included Hall of Famers John Elway, Eric Dickerson, Jim Kelly, Bruce Matthews, Darrell Green and Dan Marino. Byrd talks, quite candidly about how he was verging on being a “bust” early on his NFL career, struggling while moving around the defensive backfield and how it took an injury to a teammate to really jumpstart what was becoming a mediocre career. From there he became a multi-time All-Pro and during his 10-year career finished with 42 interceptions, still to this day the most in franchise history. Byrd talks about that, picking Elway off nine times, what it was like to play with Junior Seau, and what it’s meant to him to be inducted into the Chargers Hall of Fame in 1998. Of course, many Bills fans hear the last name Byrd and immediately think of Jairus. Gill’s son was a second-round pick by the Bills in 2009 and had one of the better rookie campaigns in franchise if not league history, picking off nine passes his first year. Gill recalls his emotion as a dad seeing Jairus follow his dreams to the NFL and the success he had in Buffalo. Gill would later spend a year in the Bills organization himself as the secondary coach in 2017. He discusses that year, the season the Bills would end their 17-year playoff drought and what it felt like to be fired after one year despite coaching one of the better performing secondaries in the NFL— a unit that included a rookie in Tre White and two safeties new to the organization, Micah Hyde and Jordan Poyer. Byrd offers his thoughts on respecting Sean McDermott’s decision and his relationship with Leslie Frazier. Well beyond football, Byrd spends time talking about the importance of church, the significant difference between racism and prejudice, teamwork, inclusion and much more. As always they end with the Fun Fact Finale and we find out many random things about Byrd, including his go-to snack, his worst habit, what he thinks he would’ve done with his life had football not worked, his favorite TV game show and much more. Byrd is constantly speaking to gatherings, whether it’s motivational sports or corporate gatherings. If you’d like more information or would like to reach out to him about anything, his email is [email protected] Follow Patrick Moran on Twitter @PatMoranTweets. ♦♦♦♦♦ Make sure you subscribe to the Talking Buffalo Podcast YouTube Channel, which includes EXCLUSIVE audio content you won’t find anywhere else as well as highlight clips from current and past podcast episodes. ♦♦♦♦♦ THANKS TO OUR SHOW SUPPORTERS Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 232Joe Miller, Overreaction Sports Podcast

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, it’s “Five Topic Friday” and Patrick Moran is joined by Joe Miller, host of the Overreaction Sports Podcast on the Buffalo Fanatics podcast network. Joe’s relatively new to the podcasting game with literally zero radio experience and Patrick’s immediately blown away by his voice and presence, which quickly becomes evident that Joe has a background in music. He discusses why he started his Overreaction Sports podcast and how he hooked up with the crew at Buffalo Fanatics. They then jump into the show’s five topics and two are focused on a move within the AFC East that directly impacts the Buffalo Bills. Cam Newton signed a one-year deal with New England this week and suddenly the Patriots are the trendy pick to once again catapult ahead of the Bills as division favorites. The guys break down Netwon as a player, agreeing his physical talent makes the Patriots offense significantly more dangerous than were they rolling into the season (assuming there is one) with Jarret Stidham as the starter. That said, Patrick and Joe disagree if a healthy Cam Newton is better than the 2019 Tom Brady that led the Patriots to a 12-4 regular season record. It’s also pointed out that Newton lost his last eight starts with the Panthers and while his career record as a starting quarterback is 13 games over .500, that he’s actually only had three winning seasons. A discussion follows on whether the Patriots deserve to be favorites in the AFC East. While they still have an elite defense and arguably the best coach in NFL history, it’s a roster depleted with talent beyond just Brady (and Gronk) going to Tampa. Other topics include the Bills wide receiver room dramatically improving in less than two seasons, if former punter Brian Moorman is deserving of entering the Bills Wall of Fame and the importance of both Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane being signed to big extensions and what could happen if they were to walk in two years. They also sneak in a few other quick discussions, including a Facebook status Patrick reads off from a friend that captures the spirit of how people should act towards each other and why people need to wear a mask. Joe, a self-admitted “challenger” has a great take in response. Joe’s a guy I’m confident Bills fans are going to be hearing from a lot in the near future. He has star potential you just sense in certain people. Ep 231Stu Boyar, WGRZ-TV Sports

E

On today’s episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a conversation with Stu Boyar about his life and career, one that lasted over 35-years at WGRZ-TV alone before retiring last week. Widely known as one of the nicest people to ever work in the Western New York sports media, the guys go all the way back to Stu’s humble beginnings growing up a child loving sports but not quite great at playing them in Rochester, New York. Following the realization in high school he would never play second base for the Cleveland Indians and lead them to a World Series, Stu began to set his sights on a sports broadcasting career. Stu went to Syracuse for college and worked a few jobs before the door ultimately opened to join WGRZ-TV in February of 1985, not long after quitting his previous job in Erie, PA. Since then Stu has never looked back, becoming a fixture on television sets of countless Western New Yorkers throughout the years. Stu discusses the process of getting comfortable being on live television, the environment of which he came into at WGRZ more than 35 years ago and some of the memorable things he’s gotten a chance to cover along the way. They also talk about how Covid changed the newscasting game, when Stu knew the time was coming for his retirement, what it felt like to see himself on the air for the last time and the barrage of well wishes and accolades offered from colleagues, peers and fans on social media all over following his last broadcast, including a nice tribute from Adam Benigni. They finish with the Fun Fact Finale and we learn plenty more about Stu, including his first celebrity crush, what game show he think he could do well on, his signature karaoke song, three historical dinner guests he’d love to have over and much more. You can follow Stu on Twitter @StuBoyar. Following Stu’s interview Patrick wraps up the podcast by giving his initial thoughts on Cam Newton signing with the New England Patriots and how there’s nothing “fake news” about the behavior going on in Florida, including sights he had to see with his own eyes to believe. On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast presented by 26 Shirts, Patrick Moran hosts the second half of this week’s “State of the Buffalo Bills” featuring Bills beat reporter at The Buffalo News, Jay Skurski. Today the guys focus on the defensive side of the ball along with a brief look at special teams. Whether the defensive line is better or not in 2020 remains to be seen but the unit is unquestionably deeper. Jay offers has takes on departed defensive lineman Jordan Phillips, who went to Arizona and Shaq Lawson, who cashed in with Miami before the attention turns to free agent additions Mario Addison, Quinton Jefferson and Vernon Butler. Jay breaks them down along with second-round rookie A.J. Epenesa falling into Buffalo’s lap at the draft while also advising that writing off Trent Murphy may be premature. While the line is stout with depth, the same can’t be said at linebacker. Matt Milano and Tremaine Edmunds are both stars and talked about in detail, but there’s good reason to worry about what’s behind them. Jay talks about Jordan Poyer becoming a leader and Tre White headed towards a monster pay day in the secondary before the guys debate if signing cornerback Josh Norman was a mistake. They also touch on special teams, including the brewing kicker battle between incumbent Stephen Haushka and rookie Tyler Bass. Before hitting up Bills talk the guys page homage to WGRZ-TV sportscaster Stu Boyar, who retired this week after 35-years at Channel 2. They also discuss Jay’s six-year old son Elliot, who is dominating kids his age in golf tournaments. Patrick also has thoughts on WGR 550 letting Paul Hamilton going and him being picked up by WGRZ-TV later in the week. Ep 229Jay Skurski’s State of the Bills (The Offense)

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast presented by 26 Shirts, Patrick Moran hosts part one “State of the Buffalo Bills” featuring Bills beat reporter at The Buffalo News, Jay Skurski. Today the guys focus on the offensive side of the ball. Change was plenty in the Bills defense during the offseason but continuity is the name of the game offensively. Buffalo returns 10 starters from last year as well as offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. The guy spend a lot of time talking about the most important position on the team, quarterback and Jay offers his candid takes on third-year starter Josh Allen. It’s widely agreed that if the Bills hold expectations higher than simply making the playoffs for a third time in four years that Allen needs to continue elevating his game. Jay breaks down the things that can catapult Allen to the next level as well as cautioning against parts of his game that can stunt his growth. They also debate if the team made a mistake by not taking advantage of an opportunity to upgrade the backup quarterback position. Stefon Diggs is the big new addition to the offense. Buffalo traded four picks, including their first-round pick this past April to acquire him from Minnesota. Jay talks about the trading being worth it and how Diggs fits into the offense along with returning wide receivers John Brown and Cole Beasley. Dawson Know enters his second year at tight end and could be in a line for a second year spike in production with a lot of weapons around him. Jay has opinions on both as well as running backs Devin Singletary and Zack Moss. The offensive line is entirely back after the team re-signed Quinton Spain, which likely puts second-year lineman at Cody Ford back at right tackle. Jay elaborates on why he thinks that’s a good thing but admits the offensive line is a position that worries him. The guys also spend a few minutes at the top paying homage to legendary WNY high school sports publisher Dick Gallagher, who passed away on Monday at the age of 79. Dick left a positive impact on their lives as well as countless others he touched. Ep 228Five Topic Friday (Red Tuesday Edition)

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, it’s time for “Five Topic Friday” and Patrick Moran is joined by managing editor of Sports Gamers Online, Mike Straw to discuss five different topics, all Buffalo Sabres or Bills related. In shocking fashion the Sabres sent shock waves through the organization this week by changing course and firing general manager Jason Botterill with an in-house replacement in Kevyn Adams, who’s never held an executive position prior. The guys discuss the firing of Botterill as well as several other executives, scouts and player development coaches that got canned. Of course, there’s also the incredibly uncomfortable press conference via Zoom that featured rare appearances from team owners Terry and Kim Pegula where Kim more/less doubled down on her comments suggesting that they know more than the team’s fans. Patrick and Mike both have takes on that as well as pointing out how this team is essentially yet again in rebuild mode despite the denials of both owners. There’ a pair of Buffalo Bills topics on the table too, including a discussion about the quarterback position, particularly if Josh Allen has come close to his ceiling yet and if the Bills made a huge mistake by not upgrading the backup quarterback position in a year that saw several former starters hit the open market. They finish off by discussing Sean McDermott, his quotable comparison between maintaining discipline and joining a gym as a New Year’s resolution, and how at this point Bills fans should be lucky to have him as head coach, especially in light of everything going on with the hockey team. Ep 227Steve Mathes, Buffalo Fanatics

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a conversation with Steve Mathes of Buffalo Fanatics to discuss the Buffalo Bills as well as the Buffalo Fanatics brand and popular YouTube show he co-hosts. There’s plenty of reasons to excited about the Buffalo Bills going into the 2020 season and most are warranted. The Bills are coming off a 10-6 season that saw them make the playoffs and go up 16 points on Houston in the second half of their playoff game before blowing it. With Tom Brady gone to Tampa, many pundits have pegged the Bills to win the AFC East. That said, titles aren’t won on paper in spring and summer and Patrick has Steve address five reasons to pump the brakes a little. Among those are issues at cornerback after Tre White, weak depth at linebacker, an apparent marriage with Cody Ford at tackle despite rookie struggles there, concern with Matt Barkley should Josh Allen suffer a significant injury and lastly, Allen himself and his ability to become a little more consistent and accurate. They also spend time talking about Buffalo Fanatics, their popularity on social media and YouTube, how Steve got involved and The Bills Guys podcast he does for the brand among other things. You can follow Steve on Twitter @JudgeMathes. Also be sure to check out Buffalo Fanatics for all your Bills news and interactive media, including The Bills Guys Podcast. Ep 226Madison Carter, WKBW-TV

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a conversation with WKBW-TV anchor and reporter Madison Carter on a variety of topics spanning her life and rising career. Carter’s become a breakout start at Channel 7 with her anchoring and live reporting recently, particularly in the midst of ongoing civil unrest and protesting in Buffalo. She discusses in detail what it was like reporting live when peaceful protesting turned wild a few weeks ago, marred with incidents that included a van being lit on fire, several businesses damaged, tear gas flying and rubber bullets flying from the police, a young man throwing a box of fire through a broken window and city and just total chaos around downtown Buffalo. Through it all Carter remained live on the air and thoroughly composed. Before getting to that they spend a lot of time talking about Madison’s early life. She grew up in Northern Virginia not far from Washington D.C. and was just in fifth grade when she already began to lock in on college. She went on to attend Syracuse University and graduated in just two years at the age of 20. She began her news media career at a TV station in Charlottesville, Virginia and wasn’t on the job long before she was reporting on white nationalist rallies there that became a top story in world news. During her time in Virginia she won two Associated Press awards for her work on the probation system. Her opportunity to join WKBW-TV came in the summer of 2018. Madison talks about that process and how she ultimately turned down an offer in Savannah, Georgia for more money and her parents living just two hours away in Jacksonville to take the job in Buffalo. There’s plenty of other topics discussed, including a typical day in Madison’s work life pre-Covid and protesting, her relationship with colleagues, living with Diabetes for over 20 years and being president of the Buffalo Association of Black Journalists. As usual, the interview ends with the “Fun Fact Finale” and we learn some cool stuff about Madison, including the Beyonce song she’d jam out to, her underrated chef skills, worst habit, first celebrity crush, favorite athlete, three dinner guests she’d love to have over and much more. You can follow Madison on Twitter @Madisonlcarter and course check out her incredible work at WKBW-TV. Ep 225Bruce Nolan, The Bruce Exclusive Podcast

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a chat with recurring guest Bruce Nolan, co-host of the Nick and Nolan show as well as host of his own brand new The Bruce Exclusive podcast.Today’s topic is a fun exercise that’s purely hypothetical. Pretending the NFL has closed its doors for eternity, the guys discuss and determine which players still active in the league at the end of last season would wind up in Canton, Ohio as a member of the NFL Hall of Fame. The intentionally unrealistic premise of the NFL folding is finding out what players have done enough to gain entry into the Hall of Fame with no more games left to play. Patrick took 35 candidates and broke them down into four candidate categories: locks, near locks, 50/50 guys and long shots. They disagree almost immediately with one of Patrick’s locks and its sets the tone for a pretty riveting discussion on many players. If that’s not enough, after Patrick’s list is complete Bruce runs down nine candidates never discussed. The entire segment is chock full of excellent insight and hot takes from Bruce. Through the process, Patrick realizes that one of Bruce’s candidates may be among the most underrated players in NFL history. In the end Bruce unofficially inducts 28 players to Canton, Ohio and their place in history,Bruce also spends some time talking about his new podcast premiering this week called The Bruce Exclusive, including why he decided to do it, what the content will primarily consist of, what this means for the popular Nick and Nolan show he co-hosts with Nick Bat and plenty more. You can follow Bruce on Twitter @BruceExclusive and be sure to check out his new podcast, The Bruce Exclusive on Thursdays and Friday as well as episodes of The Nick And Nolan Show, both found on the Buffalo Rumblings Podcast Network.Follow Patrick Moran on Twitter @PatMoranTweets.♦♦♦♦♦Make sure you subscribe to the Talking Buffalo Podcast YouTube Channel, which includes EXCLUSIVE audio content you won’t find anywhere else as well as highlight clips from current and past podcast episodes.♦♦♦♦♦THANKS TO OUR SHOW SUPPORTERS Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 224: Five Topic Friday (No Fun Edition)

E

On this episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, it’s “Five Topic Friday” and Patrick Moran is joined by recurring guest Joe from NYC to discuss in detail a minimum of five different topics in the world of sports and pop culture. The topics begin with news that the NFL is making teams stay at their facilities for training camp, meaning the Buffalo Bills are one of nine teams that won’t be able to travel to camp, which means no St. John’s Fisher college in Rochester for the first time in 20 years. The guys both have thoughts on that, piggybacking off head coach Sean McDermott feeling being away gives his team several advantages.A few Buffalo Sabres topics are discussed, including a discussion of Jack Eichel’s growing frustration that was talked about by Mike Harrington on Tuesday’s show as well as the Pegula’s continuing to try and rehab their image, this time by paying Arena employees for the six cancelled home games directly instead of in a myriad of ways, as originally discussed in March. The two briefly also share takes on their feelings about the NBA, NHL returning soon and possibly MLB as well. But the meat and potatoes of this episode revolves around Drew Brees’ comments. Patrick and Joe have a very candid and spirited conversation about what they feel is going on in the world today, including reaction from an older text exposed as Bills rookie quarterback Jake Fromme literally as the guys were finishing the segment. Ep 223Mike Harrington, The Buffalo News

E

On this episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a chat with longtime Buffalo Sabres beat reporter and columnist for the Buffalo News, recurring guest Mike Harrington on topics ranging from the Sabres being a disaster both on and off the ice to a more important non-sports topics taking its toll on all our lives. The guys talk Sabres, but before dig a little bit into what’s been happening over the past few months. Patrick recalls the last time the guys physically got together last summer for some wings and to tape a podcast before discussing how much the world has changed in just the past few months. From normalcy to quarantine and even curfew, it’s been an insane time in the United States.Mike talks about the job the Buffalo News and other media have done covering recent events and his feelings towards having political and non-sports fueled commentary on his social media, explaining the slippery slope it can be.Eventually the conversation turns to the Sabres and as always, Mike isn’t one to mince words. He has strong takes on Jason Botterill returning for a fourth season as Sabres general manager, Jack Eichel being the worst loser on the team in a complimentary way, Rasmus Ristolainen’s over usage, Rasmus Dahlin’s critical development and the job Ralph Krueger did in his first season as head coach.Mike explains how despite missing a 24-playoff to extend the postseason drought to nine years, the Sabres may not be as far off from being good as some people may think. Patrick at one point also tasks Mike with playing salesperson to sell fans on this organization. Also included is Mike discussing the challenges of trying to cover a team’s beat in today’s Covid-19 society, thoughts on The Last Dance documentary series that recently aired, whether he likes covering hockey or basketball more and finishes by listing of Mt. Rushmore of Sabres players that he’s personally covered, including a bonus story about another player who took heavy interest in Mike’s work.Follow Mike Harrington on Twitter @ByMHarrington and of course support local journalism, which needs your support now more than ever by subscribing to The Buffalo News.Follow Patrick Moran on Twitter @PatMoranTweets.♦♦♦♦♦Make sure you subscribe to the Talking Buffalo Podcast YouTube Channel, which includes EXCLUSIVE audio content you won’t find anywhere else as well as highlight clips from current and past podcast episodes.♦♦♦♦♦THANKS TO OUR SHOW SUPPORTERS Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 220Five Topic Friday

E

On this episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast it’s a Five Topic Friday and Patrick is joined by recurring guest and friend Joe from NYC for a handful of discussions, five to be exact.Today the guys are talking a handful of things Buffalo Bills, including young defensive tackle Ed Oliver getting himself arrested last weekend in Houston on DWI and unlawful weapon charges. How much of this is worrisome for his future and can it simply be chalked up to being young and dumb? They also hit on former Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly appearing on CBS Sports Radio and saying that there’s a problem with the Bills if they don’t overtake the New England Patriots in the AFC East this year as well as an assessment of the blueprint that Brandon Beane has made for the team recently highlighted on the Pat McAfee show. The Buffalo Sabres are poised to miss the playoffs for a ninth straight season, even when/if the NHL returns and goes to a 24-team playoff. Equally bad is the disintegrating relationship between the organization and the fans. Is it now at an all-time low and Patrick concludes that he actually hates the team. Also, some non-Buffalo sports stuff is discussed, including a pair of documentaries that recently finished airing that crushed it both commercially and critically; The Last Dance, a 10-part series on ESPN and season two of The Dark Side of the Ring. On this episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran is joined by recurring guest, co-host of the Nick & Nolan show Bruce Nolan to recap and discuss the NFL draft from both a Buffalo Bills and league-wide perspective. After spending a little time talking about pre-draft preparation and ESPN’s production of the draft, the guys dive into all the Bills draft picks and Bruce offers his insight into each of Buffalo’s seven picks.Among those discussions is why Bruce felt the majority were practical picks, although he admits he wouldn’t have taken at least two of the picks in their draft spots were he running the Bills. They also go over some Bills personnel winners and losers from the draft before discussing the rest of the league, going over which teams they think helped and hurt themselves the most over these past handful of days. Bruce is really high on a team that perennial does well in the draft while coming down hard on a Super Bowl contender that made many questionable decisions. The guys wrap by determining if the Bills deserve to be the betting favorites in the AFC East this year and the threat of Miami quickly becoming a contender before Bruce ends by offering insight into the creative process coming up on the Nick & Nolan Show this summer during NFL down time. You can follow Bruce on Twitter @BruceExclusive and be sure to check out the Nick & Nolan Show on both Thursdays and Fridays on the Buffalo Rumblings Podcasting Network.Follow Patrick on Twitter @PatMoranTweets.♦♦♦♦♦Make sure you subscribe to the Talking Buffalo Podcast YouTube Channel, which includes EXCLUSIVE audio content you won’t find anywhere else as well as highlight clips from current and past podcast episodes.♦♦♦♦♦THANKS TO OUR SHOW SUPPORTERS Learn more about your ad choices.
