Ep 309Casual Friday: Kickin' Bass, Covid Shots & Comedians

E

On today’s future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, it’s “Casual Friday” and Patrick is joined once again by 26 Shirts owner and BillsMafia co-founder Del Reid to discuss a variety of topics focused on Buffalo and fun pop culture stuff. The Buffalo Sabres finally ended their winless streak at 18 games, defeating the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night. Patrick discusses how he expected to meet the victory with sarcasm but genuinely felt good for the players and coaches to get the monkey off their back. He talks about how playing well over their last 21 games could help the culture with younger players and potential offseason acquisitions. Meanwhile, Del’s happy for the victory but hasn’t been watching much, admittedly in part because they’ve been so lousy. One franchise that hasn’t been lousy is the Buffalo Bills. The guys talk about a far less stressful offseason because of Josh Allen’s ascension and continue the debate on over if drafting a running back with their first pick would be a good decision. They also highlight this week’s 26 Shirts campaign, “Kickin’ Bass” to benefit an ill Shaun Sterner. This shirt was influenced and modeled by Bills kicker Tyler Bass. (You can purchase the shirt here)Before finishing up they hit their weekly segments. We learn a valuable lesson about Instagram and the historical success of the Bee Gee’s in “Today’s Years Old.” They also discuss results from a poll about former Bills stadium names and draft their “Starting Five” of all-time great comedians. You can follow Del on Twitter @DelReidand of course be sure to check out 26shirts.comfor the latest shirts for sales and campaigns it helps benefit.♦♦♦♦♦Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast Twitter: @PatMoranTweets.Facebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast YouTube:Talking Buffalo Podcast YouTube Channel♦♦♦♦♦It’s us again, this time to talk to YOU about hosting your own podcast with our distributor. Ep 308BONUS: Buffalo Bills Mock Draft (Version 2.0)

E

On this bonus episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran welcomes friend and recurring guest Aaron Quinn (Cover 1) for the second of six weekly Buffalo Bills mock draft podcast episodes every Wednesday leading up to the actual NFL draft that begins April 29.The mock drafts are done in real time, with the computer simulating picks for the other 31 teams on TheDraftNetwork.com.Before moving to this current mock the guys spend some time digesting last week’s, an exercise that saw Aaron select running back Travis Etienne in the first round and interior offensive lineman Landon Dickerson in the second. The Bills signed running back Matt Brieda last week and they discuss if that acquisition would have any impact on a Brandon Beane decision to select a running back early. They also spend a few minutes discussing getting a few players that can have an impact right away versus guys who may take longer to see the field, and Aaron concludes that a good rookie guard should be capable of unseating incumbent Jon Feliciano right away. Then the new mock starts and the guys are frustrated that several prospects they had earmarked at pick No. 30 ended up being off the board, prompting them to conclude they were prefer trading up.This ends up being an extremely defense-heavy mock draft exercise, with the first five picks all being on the defensive side of the ball. Aaron lands on a cornerback at No. 30 (Eric Stokes) that could start from day one, a defensive end in the second round (Carlos Basham) capable of being a part of the rotation early and the same defensive tackles (Tyler Shelvin) in round three that they took in the first mock draft. They also double down at defensive end, add a safety, local college running back and a receiver to round out the selections. The guys agree that trades will be on the table for the third mock draft coming next Wednesday. You can follow Aaron on Twitter @AaronQuinn716and be sure to check out the Cover 1 Buffalo Podcast♦♦♦♦♦Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast Twitter: @PatMoranTweets.Facebook: Talking Buffalo Podcast YouTube:Talking Buffalo Podcast YouTube Channel♦♦♦♦♦It's us again, this time to talk to YOU about hosting your own podcast with our distributor. Ep 307Lance Lysowski, The Buffalo News

E

Ep 305Casual Friday: Bills, Sabres & Best TV Comedies of All-Time

E

It’s Casual Friday on this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast as Patrick Moran is joined by Del Reid, owner of 26 Shirts and co-originator of BillsMafia for their weekly chat to discuss all things Buffalo and beyond. The Buffalo Bills made a few moves since the guys last spoke, signing Mitch Trubisky and Efe Obada as well as re-signing Isaiah McKenzie. Del has a few thoughts on each and Patrick asks him if he’s in cruise control/trust the process mode at this point entering the draft next month. Spoiler alert--- Del is.Meanwhile the Buffalo Sabres continue to be the laughingstock of not just the National Hockey League but all of sports at this point. The guys try to make a little sense of it. Spoiler alert---they can't.Also, Del discusses the latest 26 Shirts campaign, one very personal to him as well as well as a conversation about the emotional toll that being in this type of work can have over time. They also spend time on their regular weekly segments and Patrick admits embarrassment after getting crushed by Del Reid among poll voters over last week’s “Favorite 80’s Movies” category that saw him net less than seven percent of the vote on Twitter. This week they’re doing a Mt. Rushmore of “Favorite TV Comedies of All-Time” and also continue their weekly “Today’s Years Old” where we learn a fun fact about zip codes as well as alcohol ice cream? Plus, did Michael Keaton or Tom Hanks have a better run of 80's movies? Ep 304BONUS: Buffalo Bills Mock Draft (Version 1.0)

E

On this bonus episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran hosts friend and recurring guest Aaron Quinn (Cover 1) for what will be the first of six weekly Buffalo Bills mock drafts every Wednesday leading up to the actual NFL draft that begins April 29.The mock drafts are done in real time, with the computer simulating picks for the other 31 teams on TheDraftNetwork.com.Before discussing the Bills and diving into draft prospects and scenarios, the guys spend some time discussing two teams in Buffalo’s division slotted to draft in the top three and if they move on from their current quarterbacks, Sam Darnold and Tua Togovailoa respectively. Patrick thinks one will be traded on or before the draft. They also spend some time discussing the Bills biggest positional needs going to the draft and where they may be looking to go with early picks if the roster essentially stands as it does now. It ultimately leads to pseudo Bills general manager Aaron Quinn selecting a running back with the 30th overall pick. The guys also land on Buffalo adding interior offensive line, defensive tackle, wide receiver, safety, defensive end and cornerback with their other picks. An interesting development during the draft leads the guys, particularly Patrick to realizing Buffalo may be well served to add a veteran defensive end over the next five weeks.Again, this is the first of six weekly Bills mock draft installments and each time the rules will be a little different. This mock featured a “no trades” policy. That may not be the case next week. E

On this episode of the future-awarding winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran welcomes back controversial social media figure, sports hot take machine and unapologetic Tom Brady hater Barry McCockiner to the podcast to discuss a variety of topics. The guys spend considerable time talking about the Buffalo Bills and Barry admits surprise to how far the team went in 2020 and particularly the play of Josh Allen. He credits the cast around him as well and discusses that for Buffalo’s winning to be sustainable it’s imperative to draft well and keep surrounding Allen with talent, something Barry points out Seattle and Green Bay haven’t done enough and a reason Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson haven’t won more rings. They also spend chatting up the AFC east and discussing if Miami and the New York Jets should move on from Tua Tagovailoa and Sam Darnold respectively to select rookies at the top of next month’s draft as well as Barry’s conclusion that Cam Newton stinks and New England won’t ever be good as long as he’s the starter.Of course, no podcast featuring Barry would be complete without a Tom Brady burial, and that’s exactly what Barry delivers---for 16 consecutive minutes. They also talk podcasting, putting together YouTube videos, why Barry thinks Cardi B is disgusting and much more.Follow Barry on Twitter @UltraWeedHater, check out his Class Act Podcast and sure to subscribe to his YouTube Channel.Don’t miss out on our latest Prize Pack Giveaway contest—an opportunity to win a a free large and 20 wings from Macy's Place Pizzeria, one of Western New York’s elite pizza and wing spots (no, seriously it is). On this episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast presented by Sonny Reds, host Patrick Moran has a conversation with Chad DeDominicis of Expected Buffalo on a variety of topics centered on the continued struggles of the Buffalo Sabres. The abbreviated 2020-21 NHL season being another lost cause for the Sabres already seems to be a foregone conclusion as Buffalo finds itself last in the Eastern division and among the fewest points in the entire league. Chad discusses several of the issues, including a growingly unhappy captain in Jack Eichel, a $9-million per year forward (Jeff Skinner) who literally can’t get on the ice, their big $8 million one-year free agent acquisition (Taylor Hall) who has one goal on the season and a defenseman expected to be a franchise cornerstone (Rasmus Dahlin) that’s looked pretty ordinary in his third season.Of course much of the Sabres woes extend off the ice and Chad has plenty of thoughts on head coach Ralph Krueger, including examining why he thinks Skinner is clearly in Kruger’s doghouse despite the coach futile attempts to deny it.Back luck has played a role in the Sabres season thus far and Chad hits on some of that too, including the unfortunate injury to Jake McCabe as he was playing the best hockey of his career and Rasmus Ristolainen still not recovered from Covid. It’s not all bad news though. Chad highlights a few of the bright spots, including the play Dylan Cozens and seemingly improvement from Casey Mittelstadt, who looked like a sure-fire bust not long ago.The guys also spend time talking the Sabres all-time draft Chad did on this podcast with Paul Hamilton, John Vogl and Kris Baker last year before getting into the rocky relationship between Sabres bloggers, podcaster and fans in general with the mainstream media. All that and plenty more.Follow Chad on Twitter @CMDeDominicis and be sure to check out Expected Buffalo, which offers incredible premium content for just $5.00 per month.Follow Patrick Moran on Twitter @PatMoranTweets. Ep 295The Josh Allen Fantasy World Tradecast

E

On this episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast presented by 26 Shirts, Patrick Moran is joined by recurring guest and friend Joe from Queens and they partake in a fun “fantasy world” exercise involving Josh Allen. Prefacing everything by saying neither Pat nor Joe think the Buffalo Bills would or should trade Josh Allen they go through every starting quarterback in the league and try to figure out which, if any they’d personally trade Allen for straight-up if they became general manager of the Bills right now. Again, it’s worth prefacing by saying this is an exercise for fun designed to highlight how far Josh Allen has come in his development and to compare him to other quarterbacks around the league. That said, the rules for the exercise is that everything about the quarterback would factor into a potential trade, including the player’s talent, age, what he’s done in the present, possibly in the future and of course the player’s contract. The majority of the list makes for debates shorter than the time it will take the Pro Football Hall of Fame committee to discuss the merits of a Drew Brees induction roughly five years from now. However, there’s three guys Patrick identifies as at least being on the fringe of a discussion and eight others that deserve full-on consideration. Spoiler alerts— Patrick Mahomes is an easy decision but how many of the others end up getting the nod? The guys also spend a few minutes remembering this week being the 10-year anniversary of Terry Pegula’s introductory press conference after purchasing the Buffalo Sabres, an event Patrick was in attendance for. Ep 294Tyler Dunne, Sportswriter & Podcaster

E

On this milestone three-year anniversary episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a conversation with popular sportswriter and podcaster Tyler Dunne about some of the many personal and professional changes in Dunne’s life since previously appearing on the podcast in March of 2018.Tyler discusses some of those personal changes in his life over the past few years, including getting married, having a daughter with a son on the way and moving from Orchard Park to Boston (New York). Professionally, Tyler saw his positional eliminated by Bleacher Report shortly before the start of the 2020 NFL regular season after spending over four years there. Rather than take his talent to another national publication Tyler decided to “bet on himself” and start his own venture, something he’s had in the back of his mind since college. He started a “Go Long with Tyler Dunne” which contains plenty of free content and a lot of bonus content and perks for paid subscribers. Tyler discuses what went into his decision and some of the advantages of now being his own boss. They also spend time talking about Tyler’s podcast alongside Jim Monos sharing the same name, Go Long with Tyler Dunne. In a short amount of time Tyler and Jim have had some riveting topics and guests including a handful of former Buffalo Bills that aren’t heard from often: Lee Evans, Eric Moulds and Donte Whitner. Discussing Whitner leads Moran to remember his beef with Whitner right around a decade ago and he goes over it in animated detail. Before wrapping up Patrick asks Tyler for some insight on the Bills, including if he thinks the team will retain Matt Milano and/or Darryl Williams as well as talking about a pair of Green Bay running backs Patrick thinks would be good fits for Buffalo. It’s a great conversation with one of the most likable and talented national sports writers in the country. You can follow Tyler on Twitter @TyDunne. Ep 293Ten Topic Tuesday Featuring Aaron Quinn

E

On this episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, it’s Ten Topic Tuesday as Patrick Moran is joined by recurring guest Aaron Quinn from Cover-1 Buffalo to discuss 10 topics focused primarily on the Buffalo Bills and the rest of the NFL. It’s an offseason of uncertainty for the AFC runner-up Bills, with lots of possibilities on the table and plenty of salary cap related moves to be made. One of them may be deciding which of Matt Milano or Darryl Williams is a bigger priority to re-sign, assuming the team can only sign one of the two at most. The guys discuss who they feel is more important to the present and future of the organization and also go over some current Buffalo veterans that could find themselves released or have their contracts restricted to give general manager Brandon Beane more flexibility. They also have thoughts on how realistic recently released Houston Texans star J.J. Watt ending up with the Bills is and if they’d like to see him land in Buffalo. Each of the guys select a pending unrestricted free agent they’d most like to see Buffalo target come March 15. They also spend a lot of time talking about quarterbacks around the league, including examining if Tom Brady is getting too much credit for Tampa Bay’s Super Bowl win, where Deshaun Watson will end up, if Sam Darnold ends up getting traded and trying to forecast a landing spot for several others in what’s shaping up to be the wildest offseason quarterbacking carousel in recent memory. All this plus Jesse Pegula becoming a mainstream women’s tennis star and much more on today’s episode! Jhas came to work for Channel 4 last fall after spending roughly a decade in radio. Ep 291Ryan Talbot Discusses Bills 10 Biggest Season Takeaways

E

On this episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a conversation with Ryan Talbot, Bills beat writer and podcaster with NYup.com and the guys discuss a variety of topics centered around the biggest Buffalo Bills 2020 season takeaways. Patrick runs down a list of his 10 biggest takeaways of the Bills 2020 season, a 13-3 campaign that saw Buffalo fall one game short of going to the Super Bowl and Ryan has reaction to each. Among the topics hit on is Josh Allen having one more level of growth to reach, Gabriel Davis making John Brown more expendable this offseason and tight end remaining an annual offseason significant need for the Bills. Ryan’s insight focuses heavily on what the Bills offensive and defensive lines look like right now and what may change this offseason to address them. He also runs down a few well known veteran tight ends who could be enticed to come to Buffalo on potential one-year “prove it” deals and also sheds light on linebacker Matt Milano’s value and if he thinks the pending free agent will be back with the team. They also spend time discuss Sunday’s Super Bowl, the blueprint for beating the Kansas City Chiefs going forward and the Shout! Buffalo Bills podcast Ryan is crushing with co-host Matt Parrino. Gabrielle is born and raised in Western New York and has spent nearly her entire life there. She grew up in Lancaster and ultimately attended Buffalo State College. Once she came to grips with a music career not being feasible she turned her focus on broadcast journalism and has grown into one of the better and more likeable news reporters and personalities in the Buffalo television market. She talks about her experience at college and several interning opportunities and how it helped hone her craft, as did time spent working in both Elmira and Syracuse. She talks about how her opportunity to join WIVB-TV came about in January of 2019 and that her dream of remaining in Western New York to pursue her career became a reality. They also talk about Gabby’s insane work and sleep schedule because of her early morning shift (often waking up at 3:00am), the challenges of working through Covid in the broadcasting profession, her colleagues at Channel 4, why she loves living in Western New York, her favorite wing and pizza spots and the traditional Fun Fact Finale, where we learn several other Gabby fun facts including her first celebrity crush, worst habit, what game show she could dominate and what her signature karaoke song is. Ep 289Kris Baker, Sabres Prospects

E

Patrick Moran talks with recurring guest Kris Baker from Sabres Prospects about a variety of topics focused both on the Sabres and Buffalo Bills. The Sabres are at least staying afloat in a shortened season through their first 10 games but it hasn’t been pretty. Kris has insight as to why the team is struggling so much five on five, Carter Hutton being lousy in net, several skaters to find production and Jack Eichel not playing great despite stats that suggest otherwise. They also spend plenty of time discussing the Bills, including what’s likely to be a big dilemma on if the Bills will have the ability to re-sign Matt Milano and Darryl Williams. Both guys are prominent players important to the present and future of the organization but salary cap issues is almost sure to derail at least one of them returning. They also add a little to the Josh Allen vs Deshaun Watson “who’s better” nonsense floating around Twitter, the possibility of acquiring Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt and much ore.Follow Kris on Twitter @SabresProspects. Ep 288Brandon Beane Reactioncast With Joe

E

On this episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast presented by 26 Shirts, the Buffalo Bills season has ended and general manager Brandon Beane conducted a press conference via Zoom this week that went well over. Patrick Moran and recurring guest/friend Joe from NYC (@BuffaloWins) react to several of Beane’s talking points and much more. For the most part Beane was pretty transparent during his meeting with the media when it came to several team matters, including how he feels about re-signing Matt Milano, not being as aggressive in free agency as the past few years with re-signings being a priority, needing more from the running back position, tight ends not being a threat to defenses and the defensive line being a light this season. The guys break down all those points and more and that predictably results in disagreements, especially when it comes to Patrick’s take on running back Devin Singletary. Joe also explains why he’s adamant that the Bills should be spending the vast majority of the resources on the offensive side of the ball despite the team ranking second in the NFL in both scoring and yardage this season. They also spend time catching up as Patrick points out this is Joe’s milestone 50th time appearing on Talking Buffalo Podcast. Buffalo traveled to Kansas City for the AFC championship game and the wheels finally fell off their magical season. Patrick and Joe discuss everything that went wrong, ranging from Sean McDermott’s rare cowardice coaching decisions to Josh Allen struggling alongside an offense that gave him little help and a defense that quite frankly had an embarrassing performance. That said, the guys discuss how successful the 2020 Buffalo Bills season was in totality. They briefly examine why the franchise is set up well for the future and spend time reflecting on how this year’s success helped bring joy, bonding and hope during a time when fans need positivity in their life now more than ever. E

On this episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, the Buffalo Bills are in the AFC championship game against the Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Moran previews the game and much more with friend and recurring guest Aaron Quinn from Cover-1. The guys discuss many topics including what it will take for the Bills to win, what they need to do differently than the first time they played them in Orchard Park in Week six, why we shouldn’t read too much in that game and why it appears the Bills have went from NFL media darlings to near afterthought this week. The guys end with somewhat surprising predictions and trust me, Patrick takes it even a step farther by specifically elaborating on his. Ep 285David Tilton (Buffalo Fantatics) Talks Bills Going To AFC Championship

E

On this episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran is joined by David Tilton from Buffalo Fanatics and the focus is squarely on the Buffalo Bills advancing to the AFC championship game this week after defeating Baltimore last Saturday night. The Bills defense was the story Saturday night as they stifled Lamar Jackson and the Ravens offense en route to a 17-3 divisional round playoff victory, highlighted by Taron Johnson’s 101-yard interception return for a touchdown to finally break open a tight game. The guys break down everything from Saturday, including Stefon Diggs being the best player on the field for either team, Josh Allen getting it done without needing to look spectacular and a defense that looked terrible for most of one drive and then tightened up the rest of the way, including knocking Jackson out of the game with a concussion near the end of the third quarter. They also hit on some guys who had some key roles that may not have gotten enough recognition, including Levi Wallace, John Brown and the Bills offensive line. They then turn their attention towards Kansas City and start to glimpse on a conference title matchup most fans and media have been wanting to see. Counting the playoffs the Chiefs are 16-1 including a nine-point win over Buffalo earlier this season, but Kansas City has looked very beatable in a lot of games. The guys also spend a few minutes talking about David’s YouTube live show he does with co-shot Steve Mathes twice-weekly on the Buffalo Fanatics brand. Ep 284“Maniac” Zach Sheldon, Trainwreck Sports

E

On this episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran is joined by “Maniac” Zach Sheldon from Trainwreck Sports to talk about a variety of topics centered around the Buffalo Bills playoff game Saturday night against Baltimore. The Bills are set to host the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC divisional round Saturday night in Orchard Park and it becomes clear quickly that Maniac’s more confident in the Bills advancing than Patrick. He points out getting over the hump against the Colts without playing particularly well last week as a reason for his confidence while Patrick discusses the Ravens running attack as the primary biggest reason for his fears. They both agree that Josh Allen performing well on a big stage last week bodes well for Buffalo and eventually both guys settle on a game prediction Buffalo fans will enjoy hearing. They also spend a few minutes talking Sabres hockey and Maniac projects what he thinks Buffalo’s floor and ceiling is likely to be for this season. Meanwhile Patrick takes a shot at hockey analytical experts and worries that Thursday’s season opener could be the first of Jack Eichel’s final 56 games with the organization. The guys also spend time talking Trainwreck Sports and Maniac discusses some of the fantastic guests they’ve had on their show recently as well as a discussion on the city of Buffalo and what the Bills success has meant to it, particularly during these trying times with Covid-19. It wasn’t easy but the Bills held on to defeat Indianapolis in Orchard Park last weekend to win a NFL playoff game for the first time since 1995. The guys break down a game that in a lot of ways after discussing feels like Buffalo should’ve lost. Joe also chimes in on what the general vibe’s been in Western New York or late as the region has been starving for moments like this for a long time. Barring Covid-19 setbacks the Sabres are also scheduled to take the ice on Thursday for a regular season game for the first time since last March. After spending time discussing their respective Christmas trips back to hometown Buffalo, the attention is turned towards the Bills and the guys disagree over the significance of AFC East championship gear, the free agency value of Matt Milano, who they prefer the Bills to play in the first round of the playoffs starting next and end with a heated debate whether the Bills should play or rest their starters on Sunday against Miami with the second seed being clinched with a win on the line. Ep 276Josh Allen MVP Talk Is No Longer Premature

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast presented by 26 Shirts, Patrick Moran chats with recurring guest and buddy Joe (@BuffaloWins) on a bunch of topics centered around the Buffalo Bills defeating San Francisco on Monday Night Football in sexy fashion. Josh Allen threw for 375 yards and four touchdowns for Buffalo on Monday night and in the process won admiration from plenty of fans and media nationally for his efforts. The guys break down his effort and determine why it’s now officially save to conclude Allen MVP talk for 2020 is no longer premature. Allen’s statistical dominance this year has brought several comparisons to teams of the past and more specifically Jim Kelly. Joe explains why he hates when fans and the media compare what Allen is doing this year to what Kelly did around three decades ago. They also talk about the significance of Stefon Diggs to Allen and this entire offense, Cole Beasley being far more than what Joe thought he’d be with the Bills, the complete lack of a running game and if it matters, the defense bending but not breaking on the road and what the team should do about Levi Wallace, if anything. Before wrapping up they take a look at the remaining month of the regular season and get into a debate whether the Bills should rest starters or play to win in Week 17 if the AFC East title or top overall seed for the playoffs isn’t on the line. Joe also explains how he got suspended for Twitter, runs down some of the names that’ve blocked him there, discusses if he has any significant Christmas plans in this Covid era and reveals that he has less than zero interest in the NHL season reportedly ready to start in January. E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast presented by 26 Shirts, Patrick Moran has a chat with recurring guest Aaron Quinn from the Cover 1 Buffalo podcast to discuss takeaways from the Buffalo Bills latest victory as well as getting in the holiday spirit with a Christmas song draft. It wasn’t easy but the Bills moved to 8-3 on the season by defeating the Los Angeles Chargers, 27-17. As Patrick states, the Bills were quite often their worst enemy but still managed to come away with a victory thanks in large part to a defense that seems to be turning the corner on the 2020 season. The guys discuss several takeaways from the game including A.J. Klein continuing a transformation into a vital starter, Josh Allen having maybe his worst game of the season in Patrick’s opinion, getting the running back going and measuring the significance of being balanced on offense going forward. The guys also hold a five-round Christmas song draft, with classics from all different eras on the table. Ep 273Jaret Patterson, UB Football Star

E

On this episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a chat with University at Buffalo star running back Jaret Patterson on a variety of topics spanning his life and football career to this point. Jaret talks about growing up as an active child along with his twin brother James in Maryland. He began playing football at seven years old and knew pretty early on that wanted to be a running back. He became a star player at St. Vincent Pallotti high school, running for over 2,000 yards as a senior but despite his talent and success Jaret wasn’t recruited like a blue-chip prospect. Jaret talks about the recruiting process and why he chose the University at Buffalo over Kent State. He also talks about the adjustment of going from Maryland to Buffalo for college and what it’s meant to do it with his twin brother, who’s been a star player himself since being a youngster. On the field Jaret Patterson made an instant impact at UB, rushing for more than 1,000 yards and winning MAC Freshman of the Year honors. In 2019 as a sophomore Patterson shattered the school record book, rushing for 1,799 yards and 23 touchdowns. He came into this season on several Heisman and Doak Walker watch lists and through three games in 2020 it’s evident why—highlighted by a school-record 301 rushing yards (along with four touchdowns) last week in a victory over Bowling Green. Jaret also discusses his experience of playing in the Bahamas last year, his team and individual goals, his dream of playing in the NFL someday, favorite wing spots in Buffalo and a Fun Fact Finale highlighting tons of Jaret’s favorite things. Ep 272Greg Tompsett (Cover 1) Talks Bills & NFL Takeaways From Bye Week

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a chat with Cover 1 Buffalo podcast co-host Greg Tompsett focused on the Buffalo Bills and a spin around the NFL slate during the Bills bye weekend, a series of results that played favorably to Buffalo. The Miami Dolphins had a great opportunity to catch the Buffalo Bills atop the AFC East, but fell at Denver to the Broncos. In that game rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was benched by head coach in favor of Ryan Fitzpatrick, who threw an interception in the end zone to seal a Denver victory. Greg has thoughts on if Miami head coach Brian Flores made the right move and what it may mean going forward. Plus, are the Dolphins sort of overrated? New England also reached life support status on their 2020 season after suffering their sixth loss on Sunday against Houston, while the New York Jets were mathematically eliminated from playoff contention after a tenth consecutive loss to start the season. They also skim through the rest of this past weekend’s slate, including Patrick Mahomes showing why he’s the game’s best player, Joey Burrow’s season coming to a horrifically painful end, the Steelers continuing their undefeated streak, the Baltimore Ravens showing signs of falling apart and much more. Patrick and Greg also take a peak into Sunday’s Buffalo game against the Los Angeles Chargers, including the incredible season Chargers rookie quarterback Justin Herbert is having. They also have a discussion about how Greg handled the bye week, his attitude towards his live podcast immediately following games and how it can often be therapeutic, his positive outlook towards living life and much more. Before the interview with Greg, Patrick opens the podcast by telling a story of what he considers the most exciting football game he’s ever seen in person last weekend, a game that ultimately involved his son’s final high school football career—a contest between two high octane offenses that resulted in well over 1,000 yards of total offense and 105 total points scored. Ep 271The Yay Or Nay Episode

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a chat with recurring guest and friend Joe From NYC and debuts a new podcast segment called “Yay or Nay.” Patrick reads off a bunch of statements involving sports, pop culture and even political (sorry folks) and for each the guys will give it a yay (agree) or nay (disagree) and explain their reasons why. Among the Buffalo sports topics covered is the shocking loss last week in Arizona, Josh Allen’s place among the NFL MVP race, ranking the Stefon Diggs deal last spring among the Bills best trades ever and the apparent redemption of both A.J. Klein and Tyler Bass. They also examine the Buffalo Sabres new retro jersey, The Shield’s place among the best stables in WWE history and if Alex Trebek is the greatest TV game show host of all time. There’s also some heated political takes in this episode, including New York governor Andrew Cuomo’s recent tone and the fear of a Presidential election being overturned. Ep 270Putting Bills First 10 Games In Perspective

E

On this championship caliber edition of Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a chat with friend and recurring guest Aaron Quinn, co-host of the Cover 1 Buffalo podcast on the Buffalo Bills heartbreaking loss in Arizona on Sunday with a focus on the big picture as Buffalo heads into their bye week sitting atop the AFC east at 7-3. Going beyond the obvious DeAndre Hopkins improbable game-winning snatch over three Bills defenders on the last offensive play of the game, Patrick and Aaron discuss several reasons why Buffalo lost on Sunday and why the game shouldn’t have come down to the final play or drive including takes on the Bills interior defensive line again struggling badly, Josh Allen having one of his “floor” games compared to most his MVP discussion worthy season, the Bills running game remaining a non-factor and a talented tight end that continues to hurt the team more than help it. Aaron shares plenty of thoughts on Ed Oliver not making impact plays but still doing his job reasonably well, Vernon Butler’s struggles and a semi-defense of Dawson Knox. The guys also spend time discussing the big picture as the bye comes at the perfect time for Buffalo, not just for giving them a chance to get the stench of this gut wrenching away from them but also a chance for several key players to heal more and get healthier. They also discuss the Miami Dolphins and how much of a factor they’ll be in the divisional race down the stretch. Patrick also shares a story about a recent experience at a Florida outdoor bar where he was called explicit words for wearing a mask to the bathroom. Ep 269Kris Baker Talks Bills, Pop Culture References, The Masters & More

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a chat with recurring guest and buddy Kris Baker revolving around the Buffalo Bills sitting at 7-2, leading to a fun exercise of pop culture references highlighting the last time the Bills were in this position back in 1993. What femme fatale was Drew Barrymore portraying the last time the Bills won seven of their first nine games? What movie starring Charlie Sheen and Keifer Sutherland reigned at the box office? What iconic sitcom was battling for the top of the Nielsen TV ratings? What great cop TV was in its infancy? What mainstream diva had two songs on the Billboard Top 10 at the same time? All these and more are discussed during this episode. They also spend some time discussing the Masters going on this week instead of April because of Covid and Tiger Woods’ incredibly promising opening round. Bonus fun fact; Kris has FORTY SIX Fan Duel golf lineups for this tournament. Before that, Patrick opens by commenting on the recent passing of iconic TV game show host Alex Trebek as well as the ongoing incredible generosity of the BillsMafia fan base when it comes to charitable actions. Ep 268Anthony Marino, Buffalo Rumblings

E

On this episode of the championship caliber Talking Buffalo Podcast presented by 26 Shirts, Patrick Moran is joined by writer and podcast host at Buffalo Rumblings, Anthony Marino to discuss a barrage of Buffalo Bills topics on the heels of their most impressive victory of the season over Seattle this past Sunday. Patrick speaks of generally trying to remain subdued and remain even keel following Bills games win or lose, but he doesn’t even try to act anything but excited about Buffalo handed Seattle a double digit loss. The guys spend a good amount of time discussing the architect of the 44 point onslaught on Seattle’s overmatched defense, Josh Allen. They conclude Allen was physically unstoppable on Sunday and more than halfway through the regular season Allen forced himself right back into the league MVP conversation. Of course, he’s not doing it by himself and the guys examine how big of an impact Stefon Diggs has been to Allen’s development as well as a closer-to-healthy John Brown, who Patrick says had the play of the game in Sunday’s victory. Patrick and Anthony also talk about how the defense seems to be back on track after a very disappointing first six weeks of the season, particularly Jerry Hughes as well as Tremaine Edmunds having easily his best game of the season. Patrick also fesses up to owing A.J. Klein a huge apology after the embattled linebacker was dominant against Seattle. They also warn that Buffalo’s journey to the finish line atop the AFC East is not likely to be the cruise it feels like right now, and they also spend some time talking about Anthony’s background, when he became a Bills fans and his Breaking Buffalo Rumblings podcast. E

On this championship caliber episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran has a chat with Cover 1 Buffalo podcast and recurring guest Aaron Quinn and they hand out positional grades for the Buffalo Bills after the team has reached the midpoint of their regular season with a 6-2 record. The guys go through the team by position and Aaron offers detailed insight to each before assigning a mid-term grade. Among the more interesting discussion involves the offensive line, a banged up linebacking group and a running game that’s starting to find their way. They also spend time handing out team and individual midseason awards, including perhaps a mild surprise at Best Defensive Player and a slight disagreement between the guys on the Bills worst game so far this season. Aaron also spends time elaborating on why he’s waiting for the Bills to go out and win a game that basically no one outside of the organization and fan base is expecting them. Before the football talk the guys have a rather passionate discussion about the ramifications and impact of the presidential election this week that as of podcast release time still hasn’t been officially decided. Both guys reveal who they voted for and why, the credit Donald Trump deserves whether people like it or not, why he very likely has lost the election and what expectations for Joe Biden will be over the next four years if he wins. Ep 264Aaron Quinn Talks Bills Ending Losing Skid

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran chats with recurring guest and cohost of Cover 1 Buffalo Podcast, Aaron Quinn about a variety of topics centered around the Buffalo Bills ending a two-game losing streak with an eight point victory on the road against the New York Jets this past Sunday. Featuring an offense that for better or worse led the Bills to four wins through their first six games, getting their fifth win ultimately fell on the shoulders of the defense at Met Life Stadium. The unit answered their bell and delivered far and away their most impressive performance of the season. Patrick and Aaron discuss Jerry Hughes’ best game of the season and arguably one of the best of his career, the impact that Matt Milano’s limited snap count had, Dane Jackson’s stellar debut at cornerback and much more on the defensive side of the ball. The offense moved the ball and had plenty of success but couldn’t produce a touchdown. Instead, Tyler Bass connected on six of eight field goal attempts. The guys examine some of the things that got Buffalo’s offense stuck in mud inside the red zone, Josh Allen’s afternoon’s, the situation at running back and appreciation for Cole Beasley. They also discuss if the AFC East can be essentially decided with a Buffalo victory over New England this coming Sunday or if Miami becomes the bigger threat and much more. Ep 263Joe Miller, Overreaction Sports Podcast

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast presented by 26 Shirts, Patrick Moran has a chat with Overreaction Sports Podcast host Joe Miller on a variety of topics centered around the Buffalo Bills uninspiring Monday evening football loss at home to the Kansas City Chiefs. There’s no more debating whether the Bills defense has taken a decisive turn for the worse in 2020. Patrick and Joe try to figure out exactly why. One game after Ryan Tannehill lit the Bills up through the air, the Chiefs punished a physically dominated Buffalo defense to the tune of nearly 250 yards rushing on the ground. The guys have thoughts on Leslie Frazier’s schemes, lack of production from supposed young emerging stars like Tremaine Edmunds and Ed Oliver, mental meltdowns from leaders like Tre White and Jordan Poyer and a defensive line almost completely void of any pass rush over the last month. It’s not all roses and candy on the other side of the ball either. The guys discuss Josh Allen’s second consecutive subpar performance after a MVP worthy first month as well as Patrick thinking Devin Singletary’s days as the Bills featured back being numbered, the offensive line showing signs of regression, the tight end position being barely extinct and John Brown’s health becoming a significant concern. They also look at the big picture from both positive and negative perspectives and chime in on what the fortunes of the organization may look like going forward. They also spend time talking about podcasting, live shows, Buffalo during the fall and much more. Ep 262Ghost of Rex Ryan Has Infiltrated The Bills Defense

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick is joined by friend and recurring guest Joe from NYC for a discussion littered with strong takes on the heels of the Buffalo Bills first loss of the season this past Tuesday night in Tennessee to the undefeated Titans. Uncertainty surrounded the game happening from last week all the way through up to game day Tuesday as Covid ran rampant through the Titans organization over the past two weeks. However, despite the Titans practicing just twice over the past two weeks it was the Bills who often looked completely out of sorts. Patrick and Joe try to make sense of exactly why as the Titans clearly dominated in all three phases of the game as well as coaching and preparation. The guys spend a bunch of time bewildered about the Bills defense continuing to falter through five weeks of the 2020 season. They discuss Tremaine Edmunds doing what Patrick considers a pretty lousy job at middle linebacker and how much his injury or who’s playing in front of him is factoring in. They also discuss the ineffectiveness of the defensive line at generating sacks and pressure on quarterbacks, particularly Jerry Hughes, who is sackless and has just one tackle for a loss through five games.
