Ep 161EP 161: Kristen Ledlow, NBA TV Reporter & Anchor

E

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by 26 Shirts, Patrick Moran interviews one of the most popular NBA television personalities in the business, Kristen Ledlow from NBA TV and NBA on TNT on a variety of topics. They discuss Kristen’s life and career, including being raised in Florida and turning to athletics early on because she was much taller than most girls her age. Kristen became quite accomplished in sports, particularly basketball and volleyball and continued playing them at a high level all the way through college. It was while at Southeastern University that Kristen really turned her focus towards what’s become a great broadcasting career. She discusses what got her into broadcasting and how college helped prepare her for opportunities in broadcasting that’s defined her professionally. She also talks about how the chance to work alongside NBA legend Grant Hill for NBA Inside Stuff came about, some of her biggest sports media influences including Ernie Johnson and Doris Burke and plenty more before finishing with the traditional Mini-Lightning Round, filled with fun facts about Kristen including her first celebrity crush, go-to karaoke song, the game show she can (actually did) dominate and two people who would battle it out to be her lone Twitter follow. You can follow Kristen on Twitter @KristenLedlow as well as check out her website www.kristenledlow.com. After that Moran is joined by Jeff Boyd (@JeffBoyd716) from the 716 Sports Podcast for another installment of “The Big Boyd Theory.” Today the guys are talking the surprisingly great starts from both the Buffalo Bills and Sabres. The Bills are 4-1 and coming off their bye week as they get ready to host the hapless Miami Dolphins this Sunday. They discuss some of the early season storylines and examine the remainder of the schedule to determine there’s excellent opportunity to make the playoffs for the second time in three years, regardless of whether or not the fast start was a fluke. They also chat about the Sabres, who’ve outperformed expectations of nearly everyone through their first six games. While some stars lighting up the stat sheet isn’t surprising the steady and highly coach-praised play of an embattled fourth line certainly has been. Patrick and Jeff also talk about whether the promising beginning to Buffalo’s respective seasons feels sustainable. ♦♦♦♦♦ Make sure you subscribe to the Moran-Alytics Podcast YouTube Channel, which includes EXCLUSIVE audio content you won’t find anywhere else as well as highlight clips from current and past podcast episodes. Ep 160EP 160: BillsMafia Owns Nashville + Shelby Waddle & Chad DeDominicis

E

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, the BillsMafia takeover of Nashville last weekend is highlighted along with a chat about the Buffalo Sabres surging start to the NHL regular season. Recurring guest Chad DeDominicis, managing editor of Die by the Blade, a Sabres blog on SB Nation joins to talk Sabres, who as of this posting are off to a sizzling 3-0-1 start through their first four games. The two discuss Buffalo’s unbelievably hot power play, Jack Eichel slowly becoming the elite center fans are hoping for, Victor Olofsson’s ability to find the net, Marcus Johansson fitting right in at center, Rasmus Dahlin’s impressive point total but making plenty of mistakes, potential worries about Carter Hutton and more. Chad also evaluates the mostly impressive early play from a quartet of holdover veterans that are constantly slammed by fans and media: Johan Larsson, Zemgus Girgensons, Marco Scandella and Vladimir Sobotka. You can follow Chad on Twitter @CMDeDominicis and check out his work at Die By The Blade as well the Beyond The Blade podcast. After that we turn gears and Moran speaks with two Buffalo Bills fans individually who made the trek from Western New York to Nashville for the Bills game against the Tennessee Titans last weekend, an incredible scene that basically had BillsMafia take over the country music capital in the world. Moran talks with Charlie Callahan from the city of Buffalo and Jack Pullara from Wheatfield. Both have memorable accounts of their trips, some of the impressive sights they saw alongside fellow Bills fans in Nashville and the vibe of being in a road stadium with arguably saw more Bills than Titans fans. Both share unique experiences and evaluate if making the long drive and spending tons of money was worth it. Lastly, Moran has a chat with Shelby Waddle, wife of Buffalo Bills offensive lineman La’Adrian Waddle. Shelby was also in Nashville last weekend and talks about interacting with rabid Bills fans there, beating Tennessee and also provides an update on La’Adrain’s knee as well as important information about the Waddle Warriors Foundation herself and La’Adrain started. Ep 159EP 159: Buffalo Bills Blazing Start Continues

E

On this episode of the future award-winning Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran chats with Aaron Quinn from Cover 1 and the two dive into the Buffalo Bills 14-7 road victory at Tennessee that has the Bills off to a surprising 4-1 start. In front of a crowd with arguably as many Buffalo fans as the “home” team, the Bills went out and continued the style of play they have all season— elite defense and rely on the offense to simply not screw it up. Patrick and Aaron talk about the defensive unit that’s now without question one of, it not the best in the NFL and how there always seems to be someone different leading the way each game. This week it was defensive tackle Jordan Phillips, who had three sacks and looked more like Aaron Donald than a veteran depth guy on a one-year contract. They also discuss Tremaine Edmunds, who in year two is transforming into one of the league’s better young defenders. On the other side of the ball Josh Allen returned from a concussion and the improvement in his decision making was apparent, sans one third quarter that turned the game around at the time. Allen ended with one of his best games statistically and that was in no small part to the NFL debuting Duke Williams, who had four catches including the game-winning touchdown and a third down conversion earlier in the game that set up Buffalo’s other score. Patrick and Aaron also discuss an offensive line that continues to struggle with health and performance, particularly a rookie in Cody Ford who’s increasingly looking much better served to be playing guard than tackle. They end by discussing the bye coming at a perfect time as injuries have taken a toll and they look forward to the remainder of the season, including a bunch of winnable games that can see the Bills reach double digit wins if things continue as is. You can follow Aaron on Twitter @AaronQuinn716 and go check out Cover 1, a must-read website for Buffalo Bills fans that pumps off unique content almost daily. Ep 158EP 158: Maryalice Demler, WGRZ-TV Buffalo

E

On this episode of the Moran-Altyics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran has an extended chat with popular award-winning WGRZ-TV news anchor Maryalice Demler on a variety of topics spanning her life and career. The interview, designed to give fans a chance to learn more about Maryalice beyond just her job focuses early on about her childhood, and Maryalice remembers being raised in North Tonawanda, some of the things she was into as a child, if she thought about broadcasting while in high school and why she decided to stay local and attend Niagara University for college. They also discuss Maryalice participating in pageants after school, becoming Miss New York in 1990 and competing in Miss America the following year in 1991. There were several benefits of being successful on the circuit, including her earning more than $25,000 to help erase student debt as well as discovering the importance of public service and honing the craft of interviewing, something that’d ultimately help her launch a successful news broadcasting career. Before landing on television though, Maryalice worked as a French teacher for three years as well as a stint in hospital administration and time on radio at WJYE 96.1. They then discuss Maryalice’s storied career at WGRZ-TV, including her becoming the first and to date only Buffalo-area newsperson to win a New York State Emmy for best TV news anchor. Maryalice remains candid when recalling the tragedy that struck her hard earlier this year that resulted in her losing the love of her life to a sudden and unexpected death. She discusses the details of her and moving on-air tribute to him a few weeks later and why it served many important purposes. They finish with the traditional Mini-Lightning Round and we learn more fun facts about Maryalice, including her go-to snack, favorite city she’s visited, favorite Twitter follow, a game show she thinks she could dominate and a karaoke song she’d love to ace. Follow Maryalice Demler on Twitter @WGRZMaryAlice and check out wgrz.com as well as seeing her on air weeknights at 6 and 11pm. After that Moran is joined by his buddy Joe (@BuffaloWins) for another installment of “The Run-In With Joe.” Today the guys are discussing the Buffalo Bills, focusing on three guys taking a beating both on and off the field so far this season: Cody Ford, Zay Jones and of course Josh Allen. While prefacing he still very much believes in Allen, Moran gets fired up at fans who make up excuses for his turnovers at every turn and continue to simply chalk it up to being young. They also talk about the significance of the Bills game Sunday in Tennessee and both agree that it actually means more than the New England game the week before. They finish by giving their thoughts on a historic Wednesday night for wresting fans as AEW premiered on live television to compete head-to-head with NXT. Both shows scored favorable reviews and the guys quickly conclude AEW’s success will come down to whether they can sustain the early momentum they’re surely winning. The segment—and podcast wraps with Joe having a take on his lack of excitement for the start of the Buffalo Sabres regular season. ♦♦♦♦♦ PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SHOW SPONSORS Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 157EP 157: Lance Lsyowski, Buffalo Sabres Preview

E

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast, it’s Buffalo Sabres season preview time as Patrick Moran has a chat with Lance Lysowski Sabres beat reporter at The Buffalo News on a wide range of team topics. The two discuss some of the moves general manager Jason Botterill made over the summer and perhaps equally important, some he didn’t. Lance breaks down line combinations that look to start the season and provides insight on players ranging from intriguing youngster Victor Olofsson to a veteran hardly any fans want to see on the ice, Vladimir Sobotka. They also talk about the best defensive partner for Rasmus Dahlin, the level of surprise at Rasmus Ristolainen still being on the roster and the significance of more consistent goaltending before Lsyowski offers his take on what fans can realistically expect from the Sabres this season. They also spend a little time discussing last year’s hectic first season covering the team for Lsyowski and his relocating to Buffalo last year after the regular season already started as well as details to a Hockey Event Q&A fans can attend featuring Lance and colleague Mike Harrington. You can follow Lance on Twitter @LLsyowski and of course check out his work at The Buffalo News. Immediately following that Moran is joined by Jeff Boyd of the 716 Sports Podcast for a full recap of the Buffalo Bills heartbreaking (or encouraging, depending on your perspective) 16-10 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday. The two discuss Josh Allen at length, with Moran frustrated at fans that choose to hide exclusively beyond the youth excuse for poor decision making early in his career. They also talk Zay Jones’ irrelevancy, an offensive line that performed poorly, special teams playing a backbreaking role in the loss and a defense that proved once and for all it deserves to be called elite. Follow Jeff on Twitter @JeffBoyd716 and check out the 716 Sports Podcast, released nearly every Tuesday during Bills and Sabres season. Before ending the episode Moran has thoughts on the NFL, MLB playoffs getting underway and a historic week looming for wrestling fans. ♦♦♦♦♦ PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SHOW SPONSORS Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 156EP 156: Zack Cox, NESN

E

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran has an interview with New England Patriots beat writer Zack Cox of NESN on a variety of topics, including a preview of Sunday’s AFC East showdown between the Patriots and the Buffalo Bills. The two discuss Zack being born in New York City but raised in Wenthram, MA. Growing up loving sports, Zack played several but realized at a young age that a professional future in sports would come not playing but covering them. He elaborates why he chose the University of New Hampshire for college after spending time thinking about Syracuse University and how the opportunities that came at New Hampshire would ultimately launch his career. After spending six months post-college in New York City working for MLB.com, Zack was hired by NESN, where he previously interned with while in college. He spent a few years as an assistant editor and content producer before getting an opportunity to cover the Boston Celtics. He did that for a season and then the same with the Boston Bruins for a year before moving on to the New England Patriots, a beat he’s covered since 2016. Of course, the big news is the 3-0 Patriots traveling to Buffalo to face the 3-0 Bills on Sunday and Zack provides tons of insight from a New England perspective, including Tom Brady’s refusal to fall off that quarterback cliff, the 11-day Antonio Brown circus, Sony Michel’s early season woes, a rag tag offensive line holding things together and an elite defense that’s been utterly dominant through three games. He offers a prediction before the two finish off with the traditional mini-lightning round, where Zack becomes the first-ever guest on the podcast to get completely stumped on the final question. You can follow Zack on Twitter @ZackCoxNESN and of course check out his excellent work at NESN.com. After that Sean Chandler from the popular Sean Chandler Talks About channel on YouTube provides a movie review of Rambo: Last Blood — the filth film in the Rambo series that has Sylvester Stallone reprising his role as Vietnam War veteran John Rambo, who according to the official movie description “tries to find some semblance of peace by raising horses on a ranch in Arizona. He’s also developed a special familial bond with a woman named Maria and her teenage granddaughter Gabriela. But when a vicious Mexican cartel kidnaps Gabriela, Rambo crosses the border on a bloody and personal quest to rescue her and punish those responsible.” Chandler was a guest on the Moran-Alytics Podcast back in February and at the time he had roughly 87,000 YouTube subscribers to his channel. Today it’s over 135,000 and growing because he produces entertaining content almost daily, ranging from movie reviews to trailer reactions and franchise countdowns. Ep 155EP 155: Marcel Louis-Jacques, ESPN Buffalo Bills Reporter

E

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran talks with ESPN.com Buffalo Bills beat reporter Marcel Louis-Jacques about the experience of covering his first Bills regular season home game at New Era Field in front of a rabid hometown crowd. This is Marcel’s second time on the Moran-Alytics Podcast. In his first appearance back on Episode No. 132 in late June, Moran spoke with Marcel about his life and career literally just says after he’d been hired by ESPN to cover the Bills and was in the process of relocating from Charlotte to Western New York. Today the chat focuses on the vibe and environment Marcel found himself in as he covered a Bills regular season home game for the first time. From stopping through incognito through tailgate at Hammers Lot to taking a walk around the concourse inside the stadium to the press box area vibrating with fevered crowd noise, it was an experience he won’t soon, if ever forget. Moran also sneaks in a few questions about the validity of reporters constantly claiming they don’t care if the team they’re covering wins and Marcel’s relationship with some of the Buffalo sports media now that he’s been in town long enough to start getting to know them. You can follow Marcel on Twitter @Marcel_LJ and of course check out his written work covering the Bills at espn.com. Immediately after that Moran is joined by his buddy Tone Pucks (@TonePucks) for another edition of the recurring “Pat with Pucks.” Today the guys are breaking down the closer than it needed to be Bills 21-17 victory over Cincinnati on Sunday to improve to 3-0 on the season and set up a showdown next week with the also undefeated New England Patriots. The guys discuss good and bad Josh Allen, the beast that tight end Dawson Knox is flirting with becoming, the play calling of Brian Daboll, impact of Devin Singletary not in the lineup and a defense that was mostly dominant but suffered in the second half, at least in part due to Allen’s game-changing blunder. Game balls and taking back of game check awards are handed out before finishing up with a little Buffalo Sabres talk, where Pat and Pucks give their thoughts to the line combinations at practice on Monday about a week and a half before the start of the regular season on October 3. Tone ends with his “Puck Drop” take, this time talking about the proper way to rebuild a team. ♦♦♦♦♦ PLEASE SUPPORT OUR PODCAST SPONSORS Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 154EP 154: Melissa Jacobs, The Football Girl

E

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran interviews founder and managing editor of The Football Girl, Melissa Jacobs on a variety of topics. They spend plenty of time talking her life and career, including growing up in California and becoming a fantasy football guru in high school before fantasy sports became mainstream popular. She also discusses why she decided to attend college at the University of California Berkeley with dreams of becoming a powerful sports agent. They also discuss Melissa’s time as a producer at a San Francisco radio station and at ESPN, where she was responsible for creating a talent production department. Melissa speaks candidly on the challenges associated with being a female in a predominantly male industry and talks about her The Football Girl podcast, often featuring interviews with some of the leading females in sports media before finishing with the traditional Mini-Lightning Round, where we learn among other things Melissa’s a fan of Tokyo, Bonnie Tyler and her husband. You can follow her on Twitter @TheFootballGirl, check out her written work at The Football Girl and listen to her The Football Girl podcast. Moran is then joined by Jeff Boyd of the 716 Sports Podcast for a recurring segment of “The Big Boyd Theory.” Today the guys make small talk about their meeting over podcasting and wings in Buffalo last month, the deplorable Tampa Rays fan base and potential spin-offs of The Office before diving into Buffalo Bills and Sabres talk. The Bills are 2-0 and Moran feels like Josh Allen is becoming as big a star off the field as on it, something he hasn’t seen in a Bills player since the days of Jim Kelly. They discuss Allen, a favorable salary cap situation and look forward to a potential matchup of unbeatens in Week four when the Bills host the New England Patriots, provided Buffalo gets past Cincinnati this Sunday. They also hit on Sabres talk, including feedback from the first two preseason games, the line combinations at practice, Rasmus Ristolainen’s future with the club and finish by having a little fun projecting their own forward lines. You can follow Jeff on Twitter at @JeffBoyd716 and listen to the 716 Sports Podcast, which drops on Tuesdays. ♦♦♦♦♦ PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SHOW SPONSORS Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 153EP 153: The Buffalo Bills Might Never Lose Again

E

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, the Buffalo Bills may never lose another football again. To discuss, Patrick Moran is joined by recurring guest Aaron Quinn from Cover 1. Fans and media can say it was expected as much as they want, but the Buffalo Bills going into Met Life Stadium over the first two weeks to sweep both the New York Jets and Giants over the first two weeks is pretty surprising, especially considering it’s the first time in the history of the franchise Buffalo has begun the season with a pair of wins on the road. After a shaky season opener against the Jets particularly in the first half, Josh Allen looked far more in control from the outset against the Giants after New York scored a touchdown on their opening possession. The guys discuss his continued growth and how he’s starting to turn the corner when it comes to learning to eliminate making the huge mistakes. They also talk about John Brown becoming one of the more underrated receivers in football, Devin Singletary’s mysterious early season workload, the offensive line improvement from a year ago and of course a defense that is exceedingly living up to its formidable hype. Patrick and Aaron also can’t help but look forward to the possibility of beating Cincinnati next Sunday to setup what would almost certainly be a battle of 3-0 teams the following week with the New England Patriots coming to New Era Field in Week four. They conclude by taking a spin around the league, hitting on the Carolina Panthers season quickly sinking away, the Pittsburgh Steelers also being perhaps dead in the water, the Miami Dolphins tank-a-thon and the rise of the Baltimore Ravens offense and Green Bay Packers defense. You can follow Aaron Quinn on Twitter @AaronQuinn716 and of course be sure to check out Cover 1 for some of the best Buffalo Bills content you’ll find anywhere. ♦♦♦♦♦ PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SHOW SPONSORS Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 152EP 152: Addison Agen, “The Voice” Former Finalist

E

On this unique episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran is joined by singer/songwriter and former finalist on Season 13 of The Voice, Addison Agen for a wide-ranging interview. In 2017 at just 16 years old Addison auditioned for the voice and got chair turns from both Miley Cyrus and Adam Levine. She originally went with Miley as her coach but after a loss in the battle rounds would up with Adam after both he and Jennifer Hudson used a steal on her. Choosing Adam paid off as she quickly became a show fan favorite and frontrunner, becoming the first contestant the entire season to hit the Top 10 on the iTunes charts with passionate vocals and girl-next-door personality that vaulted her all the way to the popular show’s finale, where she ultimately finished in second place. They spend plenty of time talking about Addison’s journey on the show, including her taking listeners inside the long and arduous auditioning process that few fans know about. Addison also discusses why she chose Miley initially but was thrilled to end up with Adam, dealing with nerves before hitting the stage, the relationships she developed on the show and more. Every good story starts somewhere and Patrick gets Addison to open up about her upbringing in Fort Wayne, Indiana—the daughter of a music teacher and record store opener. Addison discusses her childhood as well as a teacher who had a great influence on her deciding to audition for The Voice. They also spend a little time learning what Addison has been up to post-Voice, including new music she’s working on and opening up at some shows in Detroit for legendary iconic rock star Bob Segar before wrapping the interview with the podcast traditional Lightning Round, where we learn some Addison fun facts including her favorite non-music activity, place to visit and three musicians she’d love to have over for dinner. You can follow Addison on Twitter at @AddisonAgen and be sure to check out her website at www.addisonagen.com for news, music, shows and plenty more. After that Patrick’s joined by his buddy Joe (@buffalowins) for another installment of The Run-In With Joe. After a little small talk on what Joe’s up to while visiting his hometown of Buffalo, the guys get down to business and discuss the severe overreaction of Josh Allen supporters on Twitter before, during and after the Buffalo Bills season opening victory at the New York Jets. As usual with Allen debate his performance varied, with supporters jumping on those critical of Allen’s play early on in the game despite him being at least partially responsible for four turnovers on Buffalo’s first six possessions. The guys agree that Allen turned things around in a fantastic second half and earned praise for the victory but it doesn’t put him above being criticized for a shaky opening two quarters. Joe also has a strong take on if it’s at least plausible that injured Buffalo tight end Jason Croom is on the roster in part due to his relationship with the owners’ daughter before both offer a prediction on the Bills vs. New York Giants game this coming Sunday. As usual, the segment concludes with Joe’s final take, called “The Finisher” and this time it’s regarding the term culture as it pertains to the Bills and football in general. ♦♦♦♦♦ PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SHOW SPONSORS Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 151EP 151: Pat With Pucks, Buffalo Bills Win Opener

E

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran’s longtime friend Tone Pucks (@Tonepucks) returns for a long overdue segment of “Pat with Pucks.” The Buffalo Bills went into New Jersey on Sunday and defeated their division rival New York Jets to win their season opener, erasing a 16-point second half deficit en route to victory. The guys break down the win, including a troubling first half that saw Bills quarterback Josh Allen responsible for four turnovers yet the Bills still went into the locker room for halftime down six points. The two debate how much of the turnovers fell on the shoulders of Allen and how much was simple unfortunate luck. They also discuss the emergence of wide receiver John Brown as an immediate difference maker, the second half coming out party for rookie Devin Singletary and an extraordinary effort from the defense to stymie Sam Darnold and the Jets offense. They also hand out game awards, find the best path to the Bills winning 10 games and take a stroll around the NFL with stops in New England, Cleveland, Green Bay, Miami, Kansas City and Tampa. Tone finishes with a memorable final take/Puck Drop, where he praises the job general manager Brandon Beane has done building the franchise and lays out why he thinks Buffalo ends the season 11-5 and in the playoffs. ♦♦♦♦♦ PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SHOW SPONSORS Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 150EP 150: Joe Marino, Buffalo Bills & NFL Season Preview

E

On today’s milestone 150th episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran is joined by recurring guest Joe Marino from The Draft Network/Locked on Bills podcast for an extensive Buffalo Bills and NFL season preview/prediction show. They start with the Bills and discuss the reasoning and fallout of Buffalo surprisingly releasing running back Lesean McCoy last week. How much of the load Devin Singletary is ready to handle as a rookie is examined and while not a fan of McCoy personally, Moran acknowledges that he meant a lot to the franchise and gives credit where its due for Shady playing a huge role in helping end Buffalo’s 17-year playoff drought in 2017. Meanwhile Joe offers takes on Cody Ford, the offensive line, a potentially elite defense flying under the radar and Josh Allen’s realistic ceiling as a second-year quarterback. From there they go into Bills season superlatives, with the guys offering predictions on this year’s team MVP, Rookie of the Year, breakout player, dud and how many games the team will win in 2019. The Bills portion of the podcast ends with Patrick reading off some “interesting” bold prediction takes from fans on Twitter, including Cole Beasley catching 100 passes, the Bills having six Pro Bowlers and defense and Josh Allen taking the reigns as the NFL’s leading fantasy football scorer. Uhh, sure. If you’re not a Bills fan there’s plenty of NFL talk as well. The guys discuss how Josh Rosen is being set up to fail, Jared Goff having 134 million reasons to be happy, running back holdouts becoming an annual thing and a boring Hard Knocks with the Oakland Raiders on HBO summer. To conclude, just like with the Bills segment Patrick and Joe offer several NFL predictions, including what teams will make the playoffs, conference championship games and Super Bowl picks as well as MVP, Rookie of the Year on both sides of the ball, breakout players and fantasy dud selections. Ep 148EP 148: Ryan Talbot Wraps Up The Buffalo Bills Preseason

E

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran is joined by NYup.com Buffalo Bills writer and recurring guest Ryan Talbot to discuss the Bills exciting preseason finale win over Minnesota, put a wrap on the preseason, project the 53-man roster Buffalo will take into the regular season and much more. The two discuss happenings leading to Thursday night’s preseason finale, including Zay Jones’ mother’s incredibly bizarre tweets and guard Wyatt Teller being traded to Cleveland along with a seventh-round pick for fifth and six round picks. Attention then turns to Thursday night where despite being a meaningless preseason finale the game turned into a legitimate nail biter in the fourth quarter as Buffalo scored 21 unanswered points late to finish the preseason a perfect 4-0 for the first time in franchise history. After a game recap Patrick and Ryan go through the Bills by position and project who’ll make the final 53-man roster, specifically focusing on potential tough decisions coming for the final spots at wide receiver and the offensive line. They finish by trying to figure out why the Bills over/under win total in Vegas has remained at 6.5 and Ryan gives his prediction on what Buffalo’s final record will be. You can follow Ryan on Twitter @RyanTalbotBills and check out his Bills coverage at NYup.com. After that Sean Chandler from the popular Sean Chandler Talks About channel on YouTube provides a movie review of Angel Has Fallen, the third film in the “Has Fallen” trilogy starring Gerard Butler as a secret service agent who’s framed for an assassination attempt on the President. Chandler was a guest on the Moran-Alytics Podcast back in February and at the time he had roughly 87,000 YouTube subscribers to his channel. Ep 146EP 146: Josh Barnett, The Buffalo News

E

On this episode of the Moran-Aytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran sits down with Buffalo News Executive Sports Editor Josh Barnett for a conversation recently taped in a conference room inside News’ sports department. The two discuss several topics over the course of roughly a half hour, including steadying the ship at TBN after a tumultuous 2018 that saw massive changes to the sports department. In particular they discuss the job Lance Lyswocki did in his first season covering the Buffalo Sabres beat after transforming from a MLB beat writer in Pittsburgh. They also geek out a little and talk wrestling, including thoughts on Becky Lynch, Sasha Banks, Seth Rollins, Elias and Lacey Evans, which prompts Barnett to share a few stories from his wrestling journalism background. The conversation concludes with Moran bringing up Barnett’s appearance at a recent blogger/podcaster meetup in downtown Buffalo and how Barnett’s relationship with people in sports media sails beyond just the mainstream men and women. You can follow Josh on Twitter at @ByJoshBarnett and of course continue to support local journalism by subscribing to The Buffalo News. After that Moran hooks up with Joe from NYC (@BuffaloWins) for another recurring installment of The Run-in With Joe. Today the guys dissect a Buffalo Bills Top 100 Player of All-Time list recently compiled by Sal Maiorana of the Democrat & Chronicle, highlighting areas they agree with while each compiling a list of players they feel are ranked either too high, low or not on the list at all. Joe also brings typical strong takes on how much he hates NFL preseason and oversensitive Bills fans on Twitter hurt over negative articles written about Josh Allen. ♦♦♦♦♦ PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SHOW SPONSORS Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 145EP 145: Wings With Mike Harrington

E

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran finishes his “Wings With” series by sitting down with Buffalo News veteran reporter and columnist Mike Harrington at the Amherst Pizza and Ale House for a chat on a variety of topics. After devouring pit charred Crown Royal BBQ wings on the back patio of the bar, the two had a discussion about wings including Moran’s absurd wing consumption count during his Buffalo trip while explaining how it went from a joke to at least semi-serious now that people are placing stock into his wing reviews and rankings. From there they discuss some of Mike’s summer, including a trip to Lambeau Field with sites and scenery that left him envious and longing for Buffalo to do more visually with sports presentation. They also talk about how Mike has gotten to enjoy more of the summer – a far cry from this time last year when he was essentially on an island covering the Buffalo Sabres mostly himself after an exodus of Buffalo News veteran writers that included his Sabres beat partner John Vogl. Both praise the great job Lance Lysoscki did his first season with The News covering not just the Sabres beat but hockey for his first time ever after previously covering the Pittsburgh Pirates in MLB. Of course they spend considerable time talking Sabres and as you’d expect Mike comes with strong takes on several matters—a clear must-listen for any hockey fan. They wrap with Patrick asking a series of fun random questions before ending on a serious note as Mike passionately discusses the importance of people supporting local journalism. You can follow Mike on Twitter @ByMikeHarrington and of course support local journalism by subscribing to The Buffalo News either online, print or both. Immediately after Moran’s joined by Aaron Quinn (@AaronQuinn716) of Cover 1 for the first time in over three months. They hit on several Buffalo Bills topics including the perceived progression of Josh Allen, how at least one of them may have underestimated the significance of Cole Beasley, the level of concern with offensive line injuries, Duke Williams, Tyree Jackson, Darryl Johnston and more. Make sure to check out Cover 1 for some of the premiere Buffalo Bills content you’ll find anywhere. ♦♦♦♦♦ PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SHOW SPONSORS Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 144EP 144: Wings With Jay Skurski

E

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, the summer “Wings With” series continues as Patrick Moran meets up with Jay Skurski, Buffalo Bills beat reporter for The Buffalo News at Snyder Bar & Grill in Amherst for wings and a discussion on a variety of topics. Jay’s go-to neighborhood spot for wings, Moran had never heard of Snyder before this meet up and was blown away by their wings, especially the dry rub Cajun. Moran runs down all the spots he’s hit during his Buffalo podcasting trip (20 through 16 days as they taped this) and declares Snyder’s the best of all first-time places he’s tried. For the record, Snyder didn’t sponsor this episode nor give out complimentary wings to have nice things said about them—they’re simply legitimately very good. After eats and obligatory wing talk the two settle into more prominent discussions including The Buffalo News, where Jay staunchly defends both himself and the paper when it comes to criticism with fan interactivity and a stronger presence on social media. By listening to Skurski you can tell their topics he’s passionate about and occasionally bothered by him being lumped into any perceived generality. From there they dig into Buffalo Bills talk and as always Jay’s insightful on several Bills issues, including concerns over Mitch Morse and the offensive line, a defense that should be even better than last year and Josh Allen’s ability to become a better quarterback in year two. Jay also sets a number of total touchdowns he thinks Allen needs to accumulate in order for him to have what would be a successful sophomore campaign. They wrap with some fun Bills fantasy questions, where Moran runs off five groups of three former Bills players from Buffalo’s past and asks Jay to select one from each to put on the 2019 Bills roster. You can follow Jay on Twitter @JaySkurski and of course check out his work at The Buffalo News. Special thanks to Snyder Bar & Grill for not only good wings but also turning the jukebox off so the boys could tape the podcast inside the bar. ♦♦♦♦♦ PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SHOW SPONSORS Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 143EP 143: Wings With Joe Buscaglia

E

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran continues his “Wings With” series while visiting Buffalo, this time hooking up with hugely popular Buffalo Bills beat reporter at The Athletic, Joe Buscaglia for wings and a chat about several topics. For a second straight episode Sonny Red’s in Lackawanna played gracious host and hooked Joe B, myself and his lovely girlfriend Sarah up with insanely delicious wings. After finishing up feasting, Sarah headed to the bar for a few Sangrias while Patrick and Joe hit the record button and chatted through the bar noise on several things, including running down all the spots Moran’s banged out wings during this latest Buffalo stay. Of course, the conversation turned to substance when Joe started revealing how the opportunity to join The Athletic came about and why he decided it was the right place for him, with opportunities to work on the football side with Tim Graham and Matt Fairburn chiefly among them. Buscaglia also talks about how the friendship among his coworkers is not only fun personally but also bleeds well into their professional lives, as each are willing to help each other even when their name isn’t in a byline. They also spent plenty of time talking about the Bills and as you’d suspect Joe has unmatched insight and thoughts on several key positional battles. Before calling it a day Moran drops an impromptu “Ask Joe B.” segment, where he asks Joe a handful of random questions and we get some fun replies, including learning what karaoke songs both Joe and Sarah could totally rock out. It’s a fun interview with perhaps the best Bills reporter in the industry today. You can follow Joe on Twitter as he closes in on 100K followers, @JoeBuscaglia and of course check out his work at The Athletic. Thank you yet again to Sonny Red’s for being an amazing host and even more importantly having some of the best wings in town. Seriously, if you live in the Southtowns or hell, even if you don’t the place is worth the ride for the wings alone—not to mention the nice dining and outdoor back patio. ♦♦♦♦♦ PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SHOW SPONSORS Learn more about your ad choices. Ep 142EP 142: Wings With Eric Wood

E

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran continues his “Wings With” series while still back visiting his hometown of Buffalo. This time the spot is Sonny Red’s in Lackawanna and his guest is former Buffalo Bills Pro Bowl center and current Bills game day radio color commentary as well as ACC Network analyst, Eric Wood. Before they even dive into topics Moran is blown away by how slimmed out yet chiseled Wood’s looking these days. Moran is going in the complete opposite direction, probably because this is his 15th time having wings over the last 12 days. These were among the best of the lot as they mowed down a plate full of “Joe’s Chicken Wings”, ironically labeled as “made famous by Eric Wood” on the menu. After discussing how good the wings were and mentioning other spots their fond of they discussed big changes in Wood’s professional life —getting jobs with the ACC Network as an analyst and taking over for Mark Kelso as Bills radio game day color analyst. Wood revealed how those opportunities came out, how he plans on approaching his work, what his attitude will be calling games for the team he spent his entire career with and what his travel schedule will look like now that football season is starting. They also spend plenty of time discussing the 2019 Bills as Wood breaks down the offensive line including how he feels about so many news faces in terms of continuity, what he’s hearing about Mitch Morse, why he gives Dion Dawkins a pass for 2018 and how he feels about Cody Ford playing both guard and tackle early in camp. He also has thoughts on Josh Allen going into his second year and a defense he thinks can and should be one of the best in the league. They also talk about the “What’s Next With Eric Wood” podcast, including Eric’s process of putting the episodes together and the premise of great guests from all walks of life transitioning into their next phase of life. It’s a formula that makes Wood’s podcast an entertaining and even educational listen. They wrap with a series of random questions for Eric submitted by fans from Twitter and Facebook ranging from the Bills to superstitions, karaoke jams and much more. You can follow Eric on Twitter @EWood70 and of course tune into WGR-550 for all Buffalo Bills games during the season. Special thanks again to Sonny Red’s in Lackawanna for being a great host and allowing the guys to devour some ridiculously good wings (and pizza.) Ep 141EP 141: Wings With Tim Graham

E

On the episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran is hanging out and eating wings while taping live from The Audubon North in Amherst with not one but two of his favorite guests. Tim Graham, feature writer at The Athletic and host of the Tim Graham Show on 1270 the Fan joins the show along with Jeff Boyd of the 716 Sports Podcast and also the recurring Big Boyd Theory segment on this podcast for a fun conversation covering a ton of topics. The guys hit the record button at one of Moran’s favorite spots in all of Western New York for wings and let the conversation fly, warts and all not to mention plenty of patrons eavesdropping in. The three spend a chunk of time early discussing one of Graham’s outstanding feature stories, a stunningly detailed and sometimes dark look at former professional wrestling star from Western New York, Lex Luger. Moran asks Graham to detail the process of what goes into producing a long form story like this and Tim provides a lot of insight on several factors that go into making long form stories a winner. After taking a break to bang out wings and chicken fingers, all three unanimously praise Cajun hot while agreeing the fingers are nothing to sleep on either. They then spend time talking about The Athletic and Tim details a fantastic story of being responsible for bringing together Matt Fairburn and John Vogl for a meeting last year, one that ultimately became the foundation of an all-star Buffalo media lineup to join online subscription-based publication. Unsurprisingly throughout Graham’s incredibly candid, as always when pointing out reasons he left The Buffalo News and what he perceives the big working environment difference between the two. Of course, The Athletic’s Buffalo division got even stronger recently with the addition of Joe Buscaglia and Graham reveals what makes Buscaglia a special reporter and such a good and credible fit there. The conversation turns to honest talk about Tim’s interviews with O.J. Simpson and Tim’s radio show before finishing up with some silly random questions before signing off, including karaoke songs Tim and Jeff think they could rock out too. As we’ve all come to expect, Tim pulls no punches whether the topics are fun or serious. Jeff, a former college journalism student of Graham provides excellent commentary and insight throughout the episode as well. Huge thanks again to The Audubon North for being a gracious host on what was a far busier Monday night taping than anticipated. The wings are very highly recommended so much so that both Moran and Graham put them in their top three. You can follow Tim Graham on Twitter @ByTimGraham and of course check out his incredibly entertaining work at The Athletic. This is Yerdon’s third time on the podcast but first in person. In fact, just minutes before this taping is the first time the two ever met. Once the tape started rolling Pat and Joe spent time talking Buffalo and more specifically the west side, a neighborhood Moran grew up in and Yerdon currently lives in now. They run down some of Joe’s favorite sports for chicken wings before turning their attention to The Athletic, which now has more than a half-million subscribers. The Buffalo division received a huge boost on the football side recently when Joe Buscaglia joined the staff and Yerdon offers his thoughts on Joe B’s addition. They also discuss Joe’s mindset during hockey offseason summer months before taking a break to mow down some BBQ, Jerk and Maple wings. The second half of the conversation revolves around the Sabres and Joe takes on topics such as predicting if Rasmus Ristolainen will be traded before opening night, what blue liner is best equipped to be paired with Rasmus Dahlin, who should skate on the top line with Jack Eichel and Jeff Skinner, if Tage Thompson should spend the upcoming season in Buffalo, what is going on with the goaltending situation and wrapping up the chat providing a present day forecast for the upcoming season. E

It’s Capaccio’s third time on the podcast but the first with Moran in person after previously being his first-ever guest and also his guest on the one-year anniversary episode. They begin with talk on Bills training camp and Capaccio breaks down how the offensive line rotation has worked, his mild surprise that Cody Ford is getting so much first team work this early, how John Brown has looked the part of a game changing through the first few days, how far long shots David Sills and Duke Williams need to go to make the team and a few players Sal wants to see step up and do more in the coming days and weeks. They then take a break to chow down some wings and here’s a spoiler alert—the Cajun medium at O’Neill’s are absurdly delicious. After spending a few talking wings, in which Sal’s convinced most wings taste the same—a take Moran considers controversial they shift to several questions for Sal submitted by fans on Twitter. The questions range from the Bills to general sports, Game of Thrones, his own former football career, what he thinks about his son possibly playing the sport and much more. You can follow Sal on Twitter at @SalSports and of course be sure to check out his work at WGR550.com. E

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran reunites with his buddy Joe from NYC for the first time in over two months for an extended installment of “The Run In With Joe” that covers numerous topics. The two spend a few minutes with a little friendly NBA and TV show banter before diving into the Buffalo Bills as we’ve now reached the one week mark from the start of training camp. Both compile a list of the 10 best players on the Bills right now and count them down, both agreeing on nine of 10 players although not necessarily the same order. They also discuss a few things they’re looking forward to at camp with Moran highlighting the offensive line and Joe (@BuffaloWins) being into defensive back depth. The topic of a potential 18-game NFL regular season schedule is discussed amid reports it could become a reality with Pat and Joe both listing the pros and cons of how it’d likely play out. From there it’s a spirited discussion over whether most reporters have any true benefit of being granted media credentials to cover a team and which outlets should and shouldn’t be sitting in professional sports press boxes. They also play a little fantasy game on the heels of a recent WGR poll as both reveal what past Bills and Buffalo Sabres player they’d add to the current roster to improve the team. They wind down with a chat about WWE, including Brock Lesnar once again being Universal Champion, the failed title reign of Seth Rollins, the emerging Kevin Owens vs. Shane McMahon and Joe angering Pat by making fun of the IIconics before each come up with a storyline they think could make WWE more entertaining. E

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran and Jeff Boyd get together for a supersized “Big Boyd Theory” segment covering the Buffalo Bills ,Buffalo Sabres and….. Seinfeld. They discuss how the Bills may distribute the percentage of snaps and carries between aging veterans Lesean McCoy and Frank Gore as well as the role rookie Devin Singletary may play. They also speculate how the offensive line may shake out over the next handful of weeks and agree that Tremaine Edmunds is set to emerge from training camp/preseason with breakout season potential oozing from the second-year linebacker. Moving onto the Sabres, they go over the Henri Jokiharju for Alex Nylander trade with Chicago, which happened just hours after Jeff spent considerable time discussing Nylander on the podcast last week. They examine what move(s) Buffalo may make on the blue line to help add to the forwards or if the team rolls with Jimmy Vesey and Marcus Johansson as the lone potential significant additions up front. They end with an extended conversation about Seinfeld on the heels of Moran binging the entire series after never seeing it when originally aired in the 1900s. Claiming he feels like he got a Christmas gift and forgot to open it for two decades, Moran highlights some of his favorite parts of the iconic show while adding a few things he wasn’t thrilled with before ending with each naming their Mt. Ep 133EP 133: Marques Sullivan, Former Buffalo Bills OL

E

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran interviews former Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Marques Sullivan on his life, Bills career, Western New York and other topics. Despite being born in Chicago, Sullivan discusses growing up a fan of the Buffalo Bills. He didn’t even start playing football until his freshmen year of high school and still by the time he was a senior he was the highest ranked offensive prospect in the country and one of the nation’s biggest recruits. Marques reveals that family was the deciding factor in choosing Illinois for college over such powerhouses as LSU and Wisconsin among others. After a good career at Illinois Sullivan talks about the process of going from college football player to NFL draft prospect, including sharing the disappointment back in 2001 that he wasn’t a first-round draft pick. He then spends time talking about his time in Buffalo, including some of the veteran players he became close with, the love the organization showed him during a difficult time, why he felt 2002 first-round pick Mike Williams was rushed into the starting lineup and the colossal frustration of a talented Bills roster that went just 6-10 in 2003. The two discuss what Sullivan is up to these days before wrapping with the traditional mini-lightning round, where we learn a myriad of Sullivan fun facts. You can follow Marquise on Twitter @SiFuSullivan. Immediately after that Jeff Boyd (@JeffBoyd716) from the 716 Sports Podcast joins for another installment of The Big Boyd Theory. Today the guys are talking about Buffalo, another hidden gem Moran had chicken wings at before settling into some Buffalo Sabres talk as Boyd analyzes the impact of Marcus Johansson, how the forward lines may play out and if the needle will move on the team if the roster remains essentially what it is now. They wrap with a chat about Seinfeld and each create their own Mt. Rushmore of TV show theme songs. Also, you can have a change to win a FREE T-Shirt Prize Pack, sponsored by Identity Ink. E

On this packed episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Identity Ink, Patrick Moran interviews Matthew Fairburn of The Athletic in addition to an installment of the “Big Boyd Theory” with Jeff Boyd. Fairburn was on the podcast a little more than a year ago and they talk about how things have changed during that time. For starters, Fairburn was at NYUp.com at the time and not long after that podcast aired joined the newly formed Buffalo division of The Athletic. He talks about the decision not being a particularly hard one to make with having the opportunity to remain living in Western New York at least playing a small role in the decision. He talks about the success of The Athletic Buffalo since launching and the professional and personal satisfaction he gets from covering the Buffalo Bills there. Speaking of personal, Fairburn talks about his upcoming wedding later this week, including answering if the final days leading up have him nervous and what wedding song was chosen for their first dance. Of course they also spend a little time talking about the Bills and Fairburn offers his analysis on their busy offseason, how the offensive line will help shape this team, the lack of leadership he’s seen from Lesean McCoy and offers a few Bills positional predictions before the season starts. You can follow Matt on Twitter at @MatthewFairburn and of course check out The Athletic, where you can currently get a subscription for 40% off. After that Moran is joined by Boyd for their recurring “The Big Boyd Theory” segment. Today the guys are discussing the Buffalo Sabres first few draft picks from this weekend, with Boyd giving his take on how long before fans can expect Dylan Cozens to be playing in Buffalo and if Ryan Johnson will unfairly be forced to carry a Ryan O’Reilly tag on him the same Tage Thompson does. They also discuss the Sabres roster and how much better it could possibly be because of incoming head coach Ralph Kruger, even with limited personnel changes and weigh in on if former Sabre great Alexander Mogilny should be included in this year’s Hall of Fame class. They wrap up by talking Seinfeld because Moran is nearly three seasons into a binge of the show, never having watched it when originally on in the 90s. Jeff talks about what made him a big fan of the show and the two pick their Mt. Rushmore’s of television shows. E

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran offers a break from sports talk by having an extended chat with Matthew Schuler, former finalist on The Voice that spans his life and career to this point. Matthew was on Season five of NBC’s Emmy award winning show and his audition resulted in the fastest four judge chair turn in the history of The Voice. It resulted in all four coaches battling for him with Schuler ultimately choosing Christina Aguilera over Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and CeeLo Green. They go all the way back to Schuler’s humble beginnings, growing up in Pennsylvania with singing and church the dominant factors in his life. Matthew talks about learning to sing, his mother being a super soprano and having artists like Michael Jackson influence him as a kid. Ep 128EP 128: Thad Brown, WROC-TV Sports Director

E

On today’s episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran has a fun chat with WROC-TV in Rochester sports director Thad Brown spanning his life and career. They go all the way back to Brown’s beginnings in Rochester, growing up an admitted stat nerd and a fan of the most unlikely combination of sports teams you’ll ever hear. Brown played football and lacrosse in high school before coming to grips that his path to professional sports would be covering rather than playing them. He went to Hofstra for college, ultimately got his job at WROC in the late 90’s and never looked back. The two discuss several sports media topics, including the mostly tight knit relationship a lot of the Western New York contingent of Buffalo Bills media enjoys, the competition among each other that’s fun but doesn’t cross the line, the biggest pros and cons of being a sports reporter, what being a sports director means to him and his take on social media, particularly Twitter. They also spend time talking about the Buffalo Bills as Brown elaborates on why he thinks Lesean McCoy still has one more big season left in him in Buffalo. He also has a take on Josh Allen working hard to become the leader of the team, offers a bold prediction that someone projected to be a starter won’t be in Week one, and reveals his realistic expectation of what it will take from the Bills to keep fans and ownership happy. As is traditional on this podcast, they end with Moran’s “Mini Lightning Round” and we learn among other things what Brown’s go-to karaoke song would be, what game should he would dominate, his favorite city to visit, his first celebrity crush and three guys he’d most love to share a beer and meal with. Born and raised in Western New York, Holmes talks about growing up in Amherst and being into musicals and dancing as a child, once dreaming of becoming a Rockette before coming to the realization she’d grow to be too tall. From there she remembers the exact moment where she decided that she could see herself becoming a news journalist and hits on many of the steps that she took to get there. They also talk about the unorthodox sleep (or lack thereof) schedule Holmes became accustomed to with being on the air so early as well as the favorite part of her job. Melissa reveals the emotional connection that comes with getting to know some of the people she does stories on and how it can be difficult but also help put her own life into perspective. Today Moran introduces Boyd to his audience and spend a few minutes getting to know him before gaging Boyd’s reaction to the Buffalo Sabres re-signing Jeff Skinner to a whopping nine-year, $81 million deal a couple of days ago. E

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran has an extensive interview with Buffalo Bills beat reporter Jay Skurski of The Buffalo News on a variety of personal and professional topics. Skurski was previously a guest on the podcast all the way back on episode five last March. When that episode aired last year it was business as usual at The Buffalo News. Not long after however, an exodus of veteran writers left the News for a variety of reasons. Ep 118EP 118: Bills Post Draft Storylines Plus Sabres, MLB & Thrones Talk

E

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran hooks up with his Pat with Pucks partner Tone Pucks for a chat on a variety of sports and pop culture topics. With the NFL Draft in the rearview mirror, Moran and Pucks (@TonePucks) sort through a list of five significant Buffalo Bills post draft team storylines with the predominant theme being competition. They discuss in detail the brewing battle between Levi Wallace, Kevin Johnson and E.J. Gaines for a starting cornerback spot, how the NFL draft was a vote for confidence for Zay Jones and Robert Foster, how the incredibly crowded Bills backfield may play out and sift through all the team’s addition on the offensive line with several scenarios on how they’ll arrive with a starting unit, of which both Pat and Pucks urge fans to not sleep on Ty Nsekhe as the starting left tackle when the smoke clears. They also spend some time collectively crapping on the Buffalo Sabres. Who will be the Sabres next head coach? Pucks suggests that if Phil Housley was truly as incompetent as it appears, Jason Botterill’s next imminent retread selection may actually matter. The two also talk a little MLB, including the surprising Minnesota Twins start and the New York Yankees staying afloat despite all the early season injuries and the Buffalo sports media news that Joe Buscaglia will be soon joining The Athletic before finishing up with several Game of Thrones takes as the epic series heads into its final two episodes. Ep 117EP 117: Elliott Yamin, Former American Idol Star

E

On this unique episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast, Patrick Moran has an extended interview with former American Idol star Elliott Yamin ranging over a wide variety topics spanning his life and career. The former top three finalist from of one of America’s most iconic shows of this century speaks of humble and diverse beginnings as a young child in Los Angeles before his family relocated to Richmond, Virginia at the age of 11. He describes the culture shock of switching coasts and some of the physical ailments that has plagued him since his early teen years— ear surgeries leaving him with 90% hearing loss in his right ear as well as being diagnosed with Diabetes. Yamin credits his friends for forcing him to audition for season five of American Idol in Boston and explains the entire process, which actually consisted of three full rounds over two months before even getting to sing for Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul. After impressing the judges in a non-televised audition, Yamin went to Hollywood, where he struggled in large part because his mother was ill back home in Virginia. After making it to the Top 24 he hit his stride during the three semi-final rounds, more-less dominating as he seemingly came out of nowhere to win America over with splendid renditions of “If You Really Love Me” and “Moody’s Mood for Love,” the former promoting Simon to say he was potentially the best male vocalist he’s ever heard on the show at the time. Moran takes Yamin on a stroll through several of the weeks after becoming a Top 12 finalist and we learn about his experiences working with Barry Manilow, being confused after nearly going home during Queen week, his thoughts on the “A Song for You” performance that had Paula in tears and Simon calling it a vocal master class before shocking show fans by stealing the show during Top 4 Elvis week a few rounds later. You can feel the emotion in Yamin’s voice when he talks about going home to Richmond for Top 3 week and being treated like a hero—what it meant to feel the love from an entire city that embraced him during his memorable run. He also speaks of clashing a little bit with music mogul Clive Davis, the one thing that left him sore about being eliminated, performing during the finale with the legendary Mary J. Blige, his post-Idol career and so much more. Ep 116EP 116: Paul Hamilton, WGR 550

E

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran interviews longtime WGR550 Buffalo Sabres reporter Paul Hamilton on a wide variety of topics spanning his life and career. A radio veteran at WGR since 1994, Hamilton talks about discovering the sport of hockey at a very young age in Amherst. While his adult career has been focused on covering the sport in Hamilton’s younger years he excelled at playing it, going to Iowa State to play college hockey and eventually earning school Hall of Fame honors. He also was invited to the 1980 U.S. Olympic team tryouts and recounts that story, including spending time playing on a line with future Olympic hero Mark Johnson. Hamilton also discusses what led to his opportunity at WGR nearly 25 years ago and how it quickly transitioned from part time board operator to Sabres reporter—a position he’s held ever since. The two spend considerable time on deep topics, including Hamilton losing his wife to cancer and how the support of others helped him move forward as well as a major lifestyle change and procedure a few years ago that very likely saved his life. They also talk a little Buffalo Sabres hockey as Hamilton gives his take on who he’d like to see as the next Sabres head coach, how trading Ryan O’Reilly last summer was absolutely the right move for them to the make, and what the organization needs to realistically do this summer to improve and wipe off the stench for falling off in historical fashion this past season. Along with some lively conversation on the pitfalls of Twitter the two wrap up with the Mini-Lightning Round, where we learn among other things Paul wishes he could rock out some Led Zepplin at karaoke, is a big Lance Allworth fan and would love to have an intimate conversation with people involved with Pearl Harbor. E

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran has a full of review of the Buffalo Bills 2019 draft with CBS Sports NFL Draft Writer Chris Trapasso. After spending some time giving listeners a chance to know Chris, a Western New York native, the two deep dive into all eight of the Bills selections from the draft. Chris breaks down each pick, reveals how he had the prospects graded and explains how he thinks each fit into the organization. They spends considerable time talking about Buffalo’s most surprising pick, running back Devin Singletary in the third round, why Singletary was Trapasso’s highest rated running back in the draft and what it may mean going forward for Lesean McCoy. Chris also explains what he didn’t like about the Dawson Knox pick, how surprised he was to see Ed Oliver on the board at nine, solid roster depth on the back end of the draft and much more. You can follow Chris on Twitter at @ChrisTrapasso and be sure to check out his work at CBSsports.com. After that Moran is joined by his buddy Joe (@BuffaloWins) for an atypical Tuesday edition of “The Run-In With Joe” on the heels of the epic Game of Thrones episode from Sunday night. Ep 114EP 114: Ryan Talbot Breaks Down The Buffalo Bills Draft

E

On this special overnight Friday/Saturday episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast presented by Pulse Cellular, Patrick Moran chats with NYup.com Buffalo Bills writer Ryan Talbot about the first three rounds of the NFL draft and more specifically how the Bills have fared. Talbot, a recurring guest on the podcast is armed with tons of information and insight on the first four players selected by Buffalo; defensive end Ed Oliver, offensive lineman Cody Ford, running back Devin Montgomery and tight end Dawson Knox. While mocked to Buffalo and several mock drafts in the months leading up to this week, there were numerous reports indicating Oliver would go within the first three to five picks, making his falling into the Bills lap at nine a pleasant surprise. Talbot offers his take on Oliver as a player and fit for Buffalo while the two discuss what scenario probably would’ve played out had Oliver not been on the board. In the second round the Bills moved up two spots to select Ford. The two dicsuss Ford and the entirely revamped Buffalo offensive line, which now has seven new players from last season’s historically bad unit. Where will Ford fit ? Who’s likely to be on the outside looking in? Of course, the big surprise of the draft came in round three when Brandon Beane chose Devin Singletary other prospects at tight end, wide receiver and defensive end—positions most thought they’d address before running back. Singletary’s arrival almost certainly means a veteran will be on his way out. Will it be Lesean McCoy? Before Friday ended the Bills traded away both their fourths to Washington to move back into the late third and select tight end Dawson Knox. He’s a project with very little college production but Talbot raves about his physical talents. Moran ends the segment by having beef with McCoy for spoiling the ending of one of the most anticipated movies of the decade less than 24 hours before it theaters. Ep 113EP 113: Greg Gabriel Plus Final Bills Four Round Mock Draft

E

This episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast, presented by Pulse Cellular is (almost) entirely about the NFL Draft, which begins on Thursday. First, Patrick Moran interviews Greg Gabriel, a three-decade veteran of NFL scouting as the two talk several prospects and positions, mostly as it pertains the Buffalo Bills. Gabriel isn’t as high on Ed Oliver as many Bills fans and ultimately predicts the Bills’ selection at nine will come down to tight end T.J. Hockenson and offensive tackle Jonah Williams. Gabriel also discusses the improvement of Josh Allen over his first year at quarterback in Buffalo and confesses some details missed when first evaluating him as a NFL draft prospect last year. You can follow Greg on Twitter @GregGabe. Sandwiched between Gabriel’s interview is Moran getting together with Aaron Quinn (@AaronQuinn716) from Cover 1. They spend the first half of their segment discussing both the best and worst case draft scenarios for the Bills when the first round begins on Thursday night, including an incredible realistic scenario where Oliver, Hockenson and Williams are all gone before the Bills are on the clock. They also talk about a potential trade for a defensive end and have thoughts on the signing of running back T.J. Yeldon. Later they conduct their fourth and final four round Bills Mock Draft, done in real time with the computer simulating the other 31 teams. The guys are faced with a tough decision at nine with both Oliver and Williams on the board. They also have to change course when tight end Irv Smith Jr. is gone in the second round before taking a defensive end in the third along with a wide receiver and safety in the fourth, both of whom have picked in their previous mocks. They end the segment talking a little Game of Thrones with at least a slight disagreement on the second episode before looking forward to what should be a historic Battle of Winterfell coming on Sunday. Ep 112EP 112: Matt Bowen, ESPN

E

On this episode of the Moran-Alytics Podcast, Patrick Moran has a lengthy interview with former NFL player and current ESPN writer/analyst Matt Bowen on a variety of topics covering Bowen’s life and career. They circle back to Bowen’s beginning, where he describes growing up near Chicago a fan of the Bears, particularly the legendary 1985 Super Bowl team that helped inspired him to start playing in fourth grade. A star quarterback running a veer offense as well as defensive back in high school, Bowen was recruited by several colleges as a quarterback and ultimately chose Iowa over Northwestern. He’d eventually move to the defensive side of the ball in college and became a two-year starter for Iowa. Bowen gives details of his NFL draft process that began after his college career ended and culminated with being a sixth-round pick of the St. Louis Rams in 2000. He gives insight and perspective to what it’s been like being the guy picked exactly one spot before the New England Patriots took Tom Brady. He also discusses his seven-year playing career, including a season in Buffalo where he speaks fondly of former Bills head coach Dick Jauron in addition to several teammates. The conversation shifts to Bowen’s post career and he talks about going back to school to get his Master’s and becoming a fixture in the sports journalism field, writing for numerous print and web publications before eventually landing his current job at ESPN. He talks about that process including getting comfortable being on camera. They conclude by spending time talking several potential Buffalo Bills draft targets with Bowen also offering his thoughts on Josh Allen and the Bills organization going forward. If that’s not enough, Bowen’s also a coach on a high school football team that has won three straight high school state championships. He talks about the pride, teaching and competitiveness that comes with coaching. You can follow Matt on Twitter at @MattBowen41 and follow his work on ESPN. After that Moran is joined by Joe from NYC (@BuffaloWins) for another installment of “The Run-In With Joe.” Today the guys are discussing the release of the Buffalo Bills 2019 schedule, with Moran a big fan of how it played out while Joe being considerably more indifferent. They also give their takes on the WWE Superstar Shakeup this week and conclude with Game of Thrones talk, both having thoughts on the premiere, looking forward to the next episode and each offering predictions of three characters who will ultimately die before the series ends.
