I didn’t have the best start in life. My parents were very poor. We lived in a very small house and life was a struggle. But then one day that all changed. I’m Joseph and I’m only fourteen years old but I’ve had quite a rough life so far. When I was three years old, my parents died in a plane crash and nobody else in my family wanted to take care of me. So I was sent straight into foster care. I’ve been in and out of several foster homes and I’ve never been lucky enough to get adopted. But I’m okay though. Mr. Anderson was my favourite teacher. He taught History class, and he always seemed to make the most boring subjects feel so interesting. My school used to hold loads of dances. My friends would always be on the dancefloor, surrounded by boys, but I preferred to stay on the side drinking punch. Before I was born my dad named me Eva which means “life”. See, my mother died in childbirth and although I was born prematurely, I survived. Since then, my heartbroken father took excellent care of me. The bond we shared was unlike any other. He taught me how to speak, walk, read, ride a bicycle - almost everything. He’d dress up in princess costumes when I decided we should have tea parties with my dolls and teddy bears, and he’d always read me a new story before bedtime. This happened when I was 17. It was a normal night like all the others. After a long school day and getting a ton of school work done, I was finally going to get some sleep. My family was always poor. It seemed all of our ancestors were incredibly poor. My family knew the challenges of poverty all too well. More often than not, I went to bed feeling hungry after a small meal for dinner. While my friends got all the newest toys and clothes, I was stuck with old stuff that we found at thrift stores and garage sales. Our house was tiny, with only two bedrooms. My bedroom was pretty much just a storage space, but we managed to fit a small mattress in there and a closet. There was mould on the walls where we lived, and we never had hot running water. I had a really conservative family growing up. And when I say “conservative” I mean REALLY, REALLY conservative to the point of an extreme. My parents had set out rules and restrictions, framed them, and put it up in the walls of my room, kitchen, and even the living area.The rules were about what I was supposed to do in and outside of the house and about my academics. There was literally a rule for me to get a certain grade. I would say that I was your pretty average teenager. I didn’t do anything weird or crazy, or even adventurous. I went to school, I came home, I joined a few clubs, I did my homework, I kissed a few boys, that was all. There was nothing about me that was more or less special than any other teenager in the country. There was nothing about me that stood out, or was worth writing down, beside whatever social media gossip was happening at the moment. I wasn’t under some delusion that I was particularly awesome, and my parents didn’t tell me that I was special.
