Ep 5454. The Origins of Your Practice Overwhelm - the Drivers of the Whirlwind
Choosing to become a doctor is an honorable decision that can bring meaning, fulfillment, and joy to your life, but the reality of the profession can be overwhelming. For many physicians, burnout has become a common struggle. It can be difficult to stay motivated when you’re feeling overburdened by the demands of the organization’s business goals. You end up trying to fit your job description into someone else's.As time passes, it gets exhausting until you finally say, "I cannot bear it anymore." As a result, some doctors find themselves deciding whether they should continue their career as a physician or pursue another path. But for those who choose to stay in medicine, it’s important to remember that you are a lightworker. You chose this career because of the purpose it provides. Don't lose sight of that! “There's a difference between a job and a practice. Practice is what you want to do. Job is how it fits into your employer's business model.” - Dike Drummond MD In this episode, we talk about: The three classical symptoms of burnout Components of the whirlwind Drivers of your job description and the revenue model Reclaiming control over your practice Resources: TheHappyMD.com blog https://www.thehappymd.com/blog/the-origins-of-your-practice-overwhelm-the-drivers-of-the-whirlwind Burnout Proof MD Physician Support Ecosystem https://support.thehappymd.com/bpmd-thmd-webinar-sign-up Check out the previous episode:The Lightworker vs. the Whirlwind - 63% Burnout Means We are Losing this Battle https://physiciansonpurpose.libsyn.com/the-lightworker-vs-the-whirlwind-63-burnout-means-we-are-losing-this-battle?_ga=2.52967144.1952786816.1675681891-1798284423.1670924402 Learn more about Dr. Dike and The Happy MD:https://linktr.ee/dikedrummond We would love to hear your feedback. Ep 5353. The Lightworker vs. the Whirlwind - 63% Burnout Means We are Losing this Battle
A recent survey of physician burnout found that 63% of doctors experience at least one symptom of burnout every single day. This study is important for the US healthcare system since physician burnout is linked to poor care quality, employee retention, and diminished work effort. If you're a doctor, you know this - You get up every day and feel like there's just so much to do, from the tedious to the mundane to the life-changing. You feel like you're always spinning in circles, trying to keep up with all of it. More and more physicians experience a conflict between their calling as a healer and the whirlwind of their job. But everyone deserves a chance to win the battle against the business of medicine, so I am going to share tools and strategies to help you fight the forces of darkness in your journey as a lightworker. “This lightworker choice at the lightworker fork in the road is something that will define your career, your practice, your life, and it will be something that you have to make compromises around when you take a job.” - Dike Drummond MD In this episode, we talk about: The invisible battle between the lightworker and the whirlwind The lightworker’s fork in the road, aiming to make a difference A doctor’s life is a whirlwind of task overwhelm Two things to do to win the battle Resources: National Physician Burnout Prevalence Study: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36229269/ TheHappyMD.com blog https://www.thehappymd.com/blog/the-lightworker-vs.-the-whirlwind-63-burnout-means-we-are-losing-this-battle Burnout Proof MD Physician Support Ecosystem https://support.thehappymd.com/bpmd-thmd-webinar-sign-up Learn more about Dr. Dike and The Happy MD:https://linktr.ee/dikedrummond We would love to hear your feedback. Ep 5151. What To Do When a Patient Says Thank You
Thank yous are opportunities to tap into spiritual energy. Among the three energy accounts in a physician, this is the most powerful, and when it is filled, the physical and emotional accounts are filled as well.In order to do this, the physician must take a moment to be mindful of the patient's words, acknowledge their gratitude, and appreciate the connection between them. This will help the physician to really feel the spiritual energy infusion and embrace it, allowing them to take this energy and use it to improve their practice. In this episode, Dr. Dike teaches us a technique on how to simultaneously fill up a physician’s three energy accounts, something simple yet powerful. He also shares tips on impacting positive influence among team members just with the words ‘thank you’.Reflecting on the patient's gratefulness can be used to create a more encouraging and supportive atmosphere in the medical office that promotes healthier physician well-being and ultimately can help to improve the quality of care. “It's the thank you that makes it feel like you made the difference, that you set out to make when you first chose to be a doctor back at the light worker's fork in the road.” - Dike Drummond MD Episode Highlights: (0:46) Review of the first two training videos (3:10) An ideal patient encounter and a missed spiritual opportunity (4:56) How to respond to a patient's thanks (8:13) Leading with gratitude as a physician leader Watch this on Youtube:https://youtu.be/jOYjSmxYfxE Other episodes you'll enjoy:Training part 1: https://physiciansonpurpose.libsyn.com/ep49-burnout-is-not-about-batteries-run-downTraining part 2: https://physiciansonpurpose.libsyn.com/physicians-3-energy-accounts Learn more about Dr. Dike and The Happy MD:https://linktr.ee/dikedrummond We would love to hear your feedback. Ep 5050. Physician's 3 Energy Accounts
Why is it crucial to recognize how burnout affects all aspects of a physician's life? Energy management is not just about getting enough sleep or taking breaks when you're tired. As a doctor, it's also about figuring out how to balance your physical, emotional, and spiritual needs so that you can be your best self at work and in life. Recap: In part 1 of this mini-training series, we discussed the common physician burnout myths and revisited healthcare’s two prime directives. Also, using the bank account model, we explained the concept of energy inside the physiology of a doctor and how they are trained to continue to perform their duties even below the empty mark. This episode is a continuation that dives deeper into the three energy accounts with their corresponding burnout symptom that occurs when each tank is in a negative balance and the strategies for refilling these tanks. Taking the time to understand this model can help physicians take action to prevent burnout and safeguard their own well-being. Ep 4949. Burnout Is Not About Batteries Run Down
Physicians, it's time to address the common misperceptions about burnout and the false ideas that it’s simply a matter of batteries being run down. In this episode, we'll talk about the common myths and provide a model of the way energy works in a doctor that is accurate. Instead of thinking of your energy as a battery, think of it as an energetic bank account so that you can feel empowered to tackle your work challenges head-on. In this series of mini trainings, Dr. Drummond will outline exactly how to approach burnout differently than trying to solve it and provide detailed solutions for maintaining a positive energy balance, so be sure to tune in to the next two episodes. “You can't give what you ain't got. You can't give energy you don't have.” - Dike Drummond MD Episode Highlights: (01:06) Common physician burnout myths (03:18) Two prime directives (04:20) Physician energy bank account (08:00) Thermodynamic law of energy in physicians Resources:Physician Burnout Energy Bank Account: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zLG8JuqAg_C6UfxUOnQq5bfBS0-Ra-Pu/view?usp=share_link Watch it on Youtube: https://youtu.be/ZKHIHFcUghA Learn more about Dr. Dike and The Happy MD:https://linktr.ee/dikedrummond We would love to hear your feedback. Ep 4848. Nisha Mehta MD - Healthy Boundaries and Saying "NO" for Physicians
The impact of physician burnout on the US healthcare system is staggering. According to a recent study, 45% of American doctors are over the age of 55, and 40% of female physicians will reduce their clinical activities or retire completely within their first six years of practice. Dr. Nisha Mehta is a radiologist, trainer, writer, coach, international keynote speaker, and community developer, who is on a mission to help physicians prevent burnout and find sustainable careers in medicine. She is the creator of two private Facebook groups with over 150,000 physicians: the Physician Side Gig and the Physician Community - which provide support and guidance for physicians. In this episode, Dr. Mehta discusses the importance for physicians to advocate for themselves and to set boundaries in order to create a more fulfilling practice. She is a strong advocate for physician wellness and career longevity. "So many people, when you talk to them, feel as though they're replaceable because they've been taught that they are replaceable. And so they don't see those numbers involved and realize, hey, actually people need us and hey, we can actually say no and we can.” Episode Highlights: (01:35) The importance of saying “no” in the context of today's medical profession. (09:47) How men and women physicians differ when it comes to quitting, retiring, and saying no. (18:33) Why physicians must come together to collectively say no during negotiations. Ep 4747. Jane Bridges MD - “Docs and Cops” Gun Safety Training for Physicians
A key component to preventing burnout in healthcare professionals is to engage in fun educational social events. It provides an excellent opportunity for older and newer physicians to interact, as well as encourage residents to stay in medicine after their residency. With her experience in physician wellness and social planning, Dr. Jane Bridges, a diabetologist at Good Samaritan, in Vincennes, Indiana, came up with a program called “Docs and Cops”. This is a yearly event that provides training on gun education, gun safety at home and in the workplace, and wound care techniques. Both doctors and police officers eagerly await this gathering, which gives them the opportunity to be out in nature, enjoy shooting, and most importantly, be informed and prepared because the number of gun violence cases is on the rise. As a gun enthusiast herself, Dr. Bridges wants to give physicians and the public a different perspective on guns, not only as a means of self-defense but also as a form of sport. “It’s just great being out in nature and shooting guns and doing something in an organized, controlled way, an educational way. The gun isn’t bad. It’s whoever is having the gun.” - Jane Bridges MD Episode Highlights: (02:15) How the program "Docs and Cops" was conceived (05:33) Gun education and gun safety at home and in the workplace (08:18) Nurses' wound care training and stopping bleeding (12:21) Using the phone app Guard911 for sending distress signal (15:18) Doctors' positive response to yearly hospital program (20:32) Training topics and promotional materials (23:31) Healthcare professional living and employment opportunities in Indiana Resources: Guard911 Phone App: https://www.guard911.com/ Burnout Proof MD Ecosystem: https://bit.ly/burnoutproof Connect with Dr. Jane Bridges:Email: [email protected] Watch it on Youtube: https://youtu.be/5GmYZYfJIrE Learn more about Dr. Dike and The Happy MD:https://linktr.ee/dikedrummond We would love to hear your feedback. 44: Malpractice and Burnout; Lessons from a Mock Trial with Dr. Heath Jolliff D.O.
The possibility of being sued following a medical error is a major source of anxiety for physicians. While there are numerous educational items devoted to medical malpractice risk, these are sometimes limited in scope. Moreover, medicolegal training in residency is frequently insufficient. Our special guest today is Heath Jolliff, DO, Board Certified in Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology, national speaker, educator, and certified executive coach. Over the course of his career, he has observed many physicians grappling with the stress and burnout of clinical documentation, administration overload, and the threat of malpractice. In 2020, Dr. Jolliff, along with his colleagues, conducted a mock trial, recreating an actual chest pain malpractice case and revealing insights and burnout prevention lessons for all physicians. The major purpose of this study was to provide participants with practical advice on how to enhance patient safety and documentation while also reducing their medicolegal risk. To learn more about this, the video of the Mock Trial and the Study of this learning experience is available at the links below. 43. Organizing a Resident Union with Hannah Porter MD MBA
Unions have been a significant force for change in many industries, and in recent years even in healthcare. They can implement policies - better pay, benefits, and working conditions, and push for more transparency and accountability. With unions, employees can make their voices heard and if successful, it could improve the healthcare system as a whole. In this episode, we talk to Hannah Porter MD, a 2nd-year Dermatology Resident at the University of Vermont Medical Center. She and her team organized the UVMC residents and fellows as the latest union shop for the Committee of Interns and Residents/SEIU. Her story progresses from leadership's disrespect and lack of transparency on issues as simple as PPE to the face-to-face conversation required to obtain a final tally of 209 for the union and 59 against. It even includes Union Busting Consultants making $2500/day to lobby the Residency Program Directors into threatening withdrawal of funding for attending conferences, and a cameo from none other than Senator Bernie Sanders. After a year, we'll follow up with Dr. Porter to see if they’ve successfully negotiated better pay and if work hour restrictions have been enforced. “I know that there are several ways to approach how we can fix this healthcare system, and this is one of the ways from my perspective.” Hannah Porter MD MBA Episode Highlights: (01:39) How it all started and recognizing the need for a union (7:27) Spreading the word to colleagues and Senator Bernie Sanders’ participation (12:37) The biggest benefit of having a union shop (16:48) Change in the treatment by senior leaders after being unionized (21:37) The first negotiation's top priority change (25:18) Bringing in the anti-union consultants Connect with Dr. Hannah Porter:https://www.linkedin.com/in/hannahjchang/ Resources: Article on the Union Vote https://www.sevendaysvt.com/vermont/resident-physicians-at-the-uvm-medical-center-vote-to-form-union/Content?oid=35346837 Committee of Interns and Residents/SEIU https://www.cirseiu.org/ Learn more about Dr. Dike and The Happy MD:https://linktr.ee/dikedrummond We would love to hear your feedback. 40. Now Your Firstborn Wants to Go to Medical School - with Guest Kim Lucas MD
Medicine is a wonderful profession. A physician’s role as a lightworker in healing and being of service to a lot of people is truly inspiring. However, modern burnout studies in physicians will often ask the question, “How likely are you to recommend medicine to your firstborn child as a career?” The likelihood has been very low for years, AND this is a theoretical and abstract question. This episode features Dr. Kim Lucas, an internist in Tempe, Arizona, skilled in Coaching, Executive Coaching, Healthcare, Medical Education, and Primary Care. She talks about her firstborn daughter who is contemplating medical school as a 26-year-old. What do you say? How different is the med school and residency experience now as opposed to when Kim and I were first board-certified in the 1980s? How can you teach your kids lessons you learned the hard way? “One of the things I tell a lot of people is we all end up on a hamster wheel of one kind or another… The skill is figuring out what's the best hamster wheel for you.” - Kim Lucas MD Episode Highlights: (00:56) The influence of family and the choice of medicine as a stable job (05:04) A passion for helping others and being a lightworker (08:25) A parent's first reaction when their child decides on to be a doctor (10:48) Generational differences in medical education and training (18:51) Guiding and supporting your child in their medical journey Resources: “It’s not about the nail” video: https://youtu.be/-4EDhdAHrOgBurnout Proof MD 3-Layer Physician Support Ecosystem: https://bit.ly/BurnoutProofMD Connect with Dr. Kim Lucas:Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kim-lucas-b3949235/Website: https://mountainparkhealth.org/teams/kim-lucas-md-2/ Learn more about Dr. Dike and The Happy MD: https://linktr.ee/dikedrummond We would love to hear your feedback.
