Listener Steve W. decided to make things right by commissioning the 1996 golf comedy classic "Happy Gilmore." Hot on the heels of "Billy Madison," this cameo-filled gut-buster hit the ground running without wasting a minute, made us question what it means to be a winner, championed the everyman, and was endlessly quotable. The '80s gave us two major movies about shrinkage: "Honey, I Shrunk The Kids" and "Innerspace." The former was a wholesome, heartwarming, at times tragic tale of a family sticking together to survive. The latter—a sci-fi jumble of sexy Dennis Quaid, overly complicated tech, annoying Martin Short, and for some reason, a rabbit— is what we're reviewing today. "Innerspace" mixed impressive visual effects that gave us all warm fuzzies as we recalled our days at the science museum. And the chemistry between Short and Quaid led to some feel-good moments. But when Quaid was in Meg Ryan's body after being in her body, then saw his own overly developed child in her womb ... man, what the fuck? You probably haven't seen this movie. We all remember Christina Applegate as the ditzy Kelly Bundy from TV's "Married with Children," but people often forget she did '90s movies, too. Before starring in "Anchorman" and "Bad Moms," a young Applegate went dark and quirky with "Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead." Commissioner Brad N. told the Shat Crew to do its worst on this comedy, not knowing it was an Ash Schlafly favorite and just wild enough to entertain Gene. The big question: What will Big D say? There's a lot to love with this teen movie, including Bernie Sanders as a babysitter, damaged kids, horrible parenting, Scientology jokes, an adorable romance, and sexy villains. Shat The Movies is no stranger to Nicolas Cage movies and teen movies; it was only a matter of time before the two collided in the '80s classic "Valley Girl," a film that stoked our loins and crushed our hopes. It's something like "Romeo and Juliet"—in that both scripts have characters and things happen—but calling Randy and Julie star-crossed lovers is a stretch. "The Transformers: The Movie" put us in a very strange position. Should we view the movie as children of the '80s, as adults in a 2020 pandemic, or through the eyes of Gen Z? And that led to more questions: Why do Autobots turn into cars at the worst times? Is something creepy going on with Rodimus Prime and Daniel? Is Spike the worst dad in the galaxy? Sometimes, a movie is just meant to be fun and sell toys. Sense of scale doesn't matter. Storylines are secondary, and the deaths of beloved characters just lead to really detailed dance scenes. "The Transformers: The Movie" had everything: a puckering space butthole, dozens of named characters that basically looked the same, a kick-ass butt-rock soundtrack, Orson Welles, Leonard Nemoy, Judd Nelson, Frank Welker, Robert Stack, Scatman Crothers, and the Micro Machines Man. The 1978 "Halloween" was a hit with the Shat The Movies crew, so we were overjoyed when loyal listener Tom C. in Texas chose its sequel "Halloween 4" as this year's Spooktacular special. "The Return of Michael Myers" has everything we loved about the original, minus the spectacular boobs, plus some great '80s special effects. Michael is deadlier. The town is more violent, and Dr. Loomis is a lot more Dr. Loomisy. Perhaps the scariest part is a look back at parenting in the '80s. Why did our parents let us eat what we ate? Why did they leave us alone when we needed them most? Why did they let us wander around town in the dark on Halloween night, visiting strangers' homes and mingling with adults wearing disguises? Why didn't they make us wear pants? Really, it's a miracle any of us lived to see 2020. So let's celebrate life by cheering for deaths. That's the true spirit of the season. Back in 2017, we awarded "Raiders of The Lost Ark" a perfect wipe score. The magical combination of Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg, Lawrence Kasdan, and Karen Allen was irresistible and timeless. But change the writing, change the villains, and change the lead lady, and you wind up with a very different movie in the 1984 prequel—one with xenophobia, ridiculous physics, bloated scenes, and a very different Indy. Missteps aside, "Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom" remains a classic with its action sequences, creative set design, quotable lines, lovable characters, and that ultra-fun mine cart escape. "Regulators, mount up!" Few words inspire more '80s Western nostalgia, and few movies manage to mix hot young actors with dusty old history the way "Young Guns" did. How could a movie with such rich lineage stumble so horribly out of the gate? The cringe-worthy love story, impotent Jedi council, confounding battle scenes, and objectionable politics hit us out of nowhere, overshadowing a valiant performance by Liam Neeson and betraying other success stories in the Star Wars franchise.
