On paper, "Boogie Nights" looks destined to fail: A new, 27-year-old director Paul Thomas Anderson gambling on making a period drama about porn ... starring Marky Mark and Burt Reynolds ... based on a short film about a guy named "Dirk Diggler" that Anderson made when he was 18. But instead of a campy tits-and-ass disco disaster, "Boogie Nights" turned out to be a breakout film powered by picture-perfect camerawork, a mind-blowing soundtrack, a swirl of emotions, and a dynamite cast including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Julianne Moore, Heather Graham, William H. Macy, John C. Reilly, and Don Cheadle. Seriously, all those people were in one movie that featured a prosthetic dong, crappy kung fu, and bell bottoms. "The Transformers: The Movie" put us in a very strange position. Should we view the movie as children of the '80s, as adults in a 2020 pandemic, or through the eyes of Gen Z? And that led to more questions: Why do Autobots turn into cars at the worst times? Is something creepy going on with Rodimus Prime and Daniel? Is Spike the worst dad in the galaxy? Sometimes, a movie is just meant to be fun and sell toys. Sense of scale doesn't matter. Storylines are secondary, and the deaths of beloved characters just lead to really detailed dance scenes. "The Transformers: The Movie" had everything: a puckering space butthole, dozens of named characters that basically looked the same, a kick-ass butt-rock soundtrack, Orson Welles, Leonard Nemoy, Judd Nelson, Frank Welker, Robert Stack, Scatman Crothers, and the Micro Machines Man. The 1978 "Halloween" was a hit with the Shat The Movies crew, so we were overjoyed when loyal listener Tom C. in Texas chose its sequel "Halloween 4" as this year's Spooktacular special. "The Return of Michael Myers" has everything we loved about the original, minus the spectacular boobs, plus some great '80s special effects. Michael is deadlier. The town is more violent, and Dr. Loomis is a lot more Dr. Loomisy. Perhaps the scariest part is a look back at parenting in the '80s. Why did our parents let us eat what we ate? Why did they leave us alone when we needed them most? Why did they let us wander around town in the dark on Halloween night, visiting strangers' homes and mingling with adults wearing disguises? "The Last Crusade" gave us back the Indy we love: a grave desecrating, German killing, clumsy nerd who just happens to always come out on top. But it's not without nonsense. Back in 2017, we awarded "Raiders of The Lost Ark" a perfect wipe score. The magical combination of Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg, Lawrence Kasdan, and Karen Allen was irresistible and timeless. But change the writing, change the villains, and change the lead lady, and you wind up with a very different movie in the 1984 prequel—one with xenophobia, ridiculous physics, bloated scenes, and a very different Indy. Missteps aside, "Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom" remains a classic with its action sequences, creative set design, quotable lines, lovable characters, and that ultra-fun mine cart escape. Plus, the organ removal, child slavery, and gratuitous body count basically led to the invention of PG-13 Movies. Every child of the '80s remembers "Maximum Overdrive," that cool horror movie where cars come alive and a green goblin semi-truck tries to kill Emilio Estevez. What we don't remember is how high Stephen King was when he decided to write and direct a film in which guns aim themselves, kids get run over by steamrollers, and aliens attempt to use cosmic broom against mankind. How could a movie with such rich lineage stumble so horribly out of the gate? It only took 3 years and 108 days, but long-time listener Gillian J. finally commissioned the 1991 movie that asks the question: "Is a light-hearted comedy really the best vehicle to explore the effects of childhood trauma & schizophrenia?". "The Explorers" had everything an '80s kid could want in a movie: three buddies building a spaceship from a Tilt-A-Whirl, magical computers, teenage aliens, and cool special effects from Industrial Light and Magic. What this 1985 sci-fi adventure lacked was enough time to fully develop.
