Ep 296Defending Your Life (1991)
EWhen a listener dedicates a podcast commission to his late wife, you treat it with respect. When the movie is about death and the afterlife, you add a degree of reverence. When one of your podcast hosts is dealing with a recent loss, you take the whole thing personally. And when Albert Brooks is the romantic lead, you have to throw all of that out the window. "Defending You Life" is a 1991 romantic comedy destined for a good shatting, and it treated the Shat Crew to some lively discussion of past lives, simpler times, biggest fears, and crimes against Meryl Streep. The podcast also took us to places we never imagined we'd go: highlighting the difference between Albert Brooks and Larry David, worshipping Rip Torn and earnestly drawing parallels between purgatory's legal proceedings and Franz Kafka. Ep 295Smokey and The Bandit (1977)
EShat The Movies has brought us so many dynamic pairings: Riggs and Murtaugh, Goose and Maverick, Dick Ebert and Gene Lyons. It's only fair that we reach back to 1977 for the quickest duo to deliver Coors beer from Texarkana to Atlanta: Snowman and The Bandit. "Smokey and The Bandit" triggered an explosion in trucker romanticism, CB radio fetishism and Pontiac Firebird Trans Am sales. Stuntman Hal Needham's directorial debut also gave audiences a fresh look at Jackie Gleason and convinced America (but not Gene) that Sally Field could be hot. It had everything you could ask for in a bootlegger movie: Jerry Reed songs that literally tell you what's happening on screen, '70s style, sexy cars, Burt Reynolds and inexplicable pit stops. But does "Smokey and The Bandit" hold up as a comedy with a pinch of romance? You might be surprised. Ep 294The Devil's Advocate (1997)
EEach Shat The Movies host brought unique insights to shed light on 1997's "The Devil's Advocate." Dick gifted us with his knowledge of Gainesville, Fla. Gene examined the justice system. And Ash explained scripture and social pressure. And then the conversation quickly devolved into rants about Keanu Reeves' excessive kissing, body hair, Al Pacino's sex appeal, how the Antichrist works, incest, weird boobs, Southern accents and parental controls. Big thanks to Andy in Norway for commissioning this supernatural horror that proves sometimes a quiet ending is the best ending. Ep 293Christine (1983)
EWe've seen what happens when Stephen King's novels are turned into TV miniseries. We've seen what happens when they're directed by nobodies. Now "Christine" is gonna show the Shat Crew how John Carpenter gets down. Listener Matt the Shat (UK) commissioned this 1983 horror adaptation that had Big D and Gene drooling over car porn and Ash confessing she drives Honda Pilot. The hosts were split on whether Arnie was cool or cringe, and Gene was confused about some of the schemes and injuries. Meanwhile, the movie's chief bully, Buddy Repperton, had us debating who would win Buddy Bowl. Ash just wanted to know why Christine was alive in the first place. Ep 292The Truman Show (1998)
EAll-star commissioner Bralen D. adds to Shat The Movies' Jim Carrey catalog with the 1998 film that spanned a half dozen genres and lent its name to a psychiatric disease: "The Truman Show." Reality TV expert Dick Ebert leads the Shat Crew through a tangle of topics, including: Jedi healing abilities, being watched 24/7, James and the Giant Cock, Night Owl security systems, M. Night Shyamalan's "The Village," springtime anal and HBO's "Westworld." To wrap things up, Jim Carrey fans call in about "Liar Liar," and Ash receives a dick vid from a listener. Ep 291South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999)
EWith Gene on vacation, Big D and Ash tagged-in Shat favorite, guest host, Kevin Brackett from "Reel Spoilers" to help them tackle the 1999 classic "South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut." This comedy, musical masterpiece led to many topics for our hosts to dissect. Ash argues that Terrance and Phillip give us the best movie song of all time. The trio debunk the dangers of profanity. Kevin and Ash declare that South Park may just be a brilliant tribute to Les Mis. Big D educates on how the film was used by the U.S. Army as a torture device. And the hosts answer the all important question of whether they are team Satan or team Saddam. Ep 290Unforgiven (1992)
EBig D and Gene called up the rootinest, tootinest feller they know to help review 1992's "Unforgiven," and the King Bee delivered with sage cowboy wisdom about big-booty threesomes, the pony economy and frontier law. This Academy Award-winning masterpiece led to a stampede of topics including: What constitutes a movie room? Is there honor among killers? Can the right woman save you? Would William Munny survive the final shootout? Is Morgan Freeman too dignified to die on screen? And how do you pause Instagram stories? The King Bee offers a bounty for fictional movies with epilogues, and Dick Ebert gives style safety tips as The Shat Crew laments the fact Clint Eastwood ever made "The Mule" and "Cry Macho." Ep 289The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984)
EGene Lyons probably will never enjoy the flattery of a biopic retelling his life, but "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension" comes pretty damn close to depicting his life as a eccentric polymath. This 1984 box-office flop was either way ahead of its time or way too much of a mess for any sane person to comprehend. In this edition of "Shat The Movies," Ash praises the spaceship designs and compares Buckaroo Banzai to Maverick. Big D points out the ridiculous dialogue; and Gene decides he's watching cinematic jazz. The Shat Crew also discusses John Lithgow, John Bigboote, and all the other Johns that make the movie great. Ep 288Liar Liar (1997)
EGene gets a crash-course in parenting in this week's group-commissioned Jim Carrey hit from 1997, "Liar Liar." Ash cautions against Disneyworld Dads and helicopter parents, while Big D makes the case that falsehoods make the world go 'round. This uber-informative episode of Shat The Movies also explores the world of lawyering, age-of-consent laws, gas safety, anesthesia protocol and when it's OK to treat kids as adults. The Shat Crew also debates Jim Carrey's use of physical comedy and learns an important lesson: Marriage is what you don't say. Ep 287Notting Hill (1999)
EAsh and Gene ditch the third wheel this week for a romantic stroll along the River Thames and up to "Notting Hill," where they sing along to '90s English ballads, discuss meeting celebrities, and rediscover the magic of Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts. Shat The Movies commissioner Will commissioned this episode for his British wife, and we sincerely apologize for ruining it by nitpicking why a bookstore owner would carry bad books, why the hair and makeup crew had to go so hard, why people don't appreciate being able to see boobs whenever they want, and why Alec Baldwin was even in this movie. Ep 286Event Horizon (1997)
EShat The Movies loves a good horror movie, and all three hosts were thrilled when listener Robert in Germany commissioned "Event Horizon." This 1997 space freak-out film combined sci-fi and infernal themes with performances from Sam Neill and Laurence Fishburne, leaving the entire Shat Crew changed. In this episode, Big D points out filmmakers were entirely too optimistic on Earthlings' space-faring timeline. Gene accuses "Event Horizon" of being an "Alien" ripoff, and Ash cheers the concept of a haunted house in space. Remember the paper-and-pencil demo of how to fold space-time? The Latin recording with the cannibal orgy? Who could forget! And the jump scares are top-notch, even if a few are a little forced. "Event Horizon" was a landmark film for so many of us '80s and '90s kids, but does it still hold its place among the spooky greats? Listen and find out. Ep 285So I Married An Axe Murderer (1993)
EAfter "Wayne's World" scored a near perfect 0.25 Wipe Score, the Shat Crew was drooling over the prospect of covering Mike Myers' follow-up flop with a knockout supporting cast: "So I Married An Axe Murderer." Ash loved it as a kid, and it inspired Gene to perform beat poetry. But Big D has always kept the movie at arm's length. In this episode, we examine the 1993 romantic black comedy and reminisce about '90s music, coffee shop culture, shabby chic home decor, handsy moms, Alan Arkin's genius, and whether Mike Myers makes Adam Sandler seem romantic. The Shat Crew also discusses trust in relationships, appropriate honeymoon destinations, whether Charlie even deserves Harriet, and whether Mike Myers can act when he isn't wearing a costume. Ep 284I'm Gonna Git You Sucka (1988)
ETwo old friends of the podcast return this week for Shat The Movies' take on "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka": Black Girl Couch commissioned the 1988 blaxploitation parody, and The King Bee is our guest host. Keenan Ivory Wayans' directorial debut led us to question the reality of the blaxploitation metaverse, declare every person's right to lampoon their own race, celebrate a knockout cast and determine that Damon is the least funny Wayans brother. In this episode, the Shat Crew also discusses a black Ryan Reynolds, whether wigs count as lying, whether Gene goes wild when Ash is gone, the comedic power of giant hats, Gene's first fart joke, suicide by soup and choosing your beating. Ep 283Needful Things (1993)
EShat The Movies is no stranger to film adaptations of Stephen King books, but this is the first one Big D has actually read. "Needful Things" combines the unexpected star power of Ed Harris and Max von Sydow with the unexpected bosom of Bonnie Bedelia to bring us a movie with a devilishly good premise and abysmal special effects. Gene felt "Needful Things" was more Muppet movie than a genuine horror flick. Ash begged all the characters to install alarm systems, and Big D pointed out the missing reveal that really would have brought the whole tale home. In the end, the Shat Crew agreed the film simply had to be intended as a horror-comedy. In this episode, we also discuss: what "needful thing" each Shat The Movies co-host would choose, how the movie did Nettie dirty, materialism, hypocrisy, the slowest cop ever, easily convinced townsfolk who all happen to be trained stunt performers, and how to properly blow up a church. Ep 282The Wedding Singer (1998)
EWe're celebrating Hot Sauce Steve's birthday with the 1998 hit that marked Adam Sandler's transition to romantic comedies: "The Wedding Singer." In many ways, "The Wedding Singer" was a sign of things to come for Sandler: co-starring with a possibly concussed Drew Barrymore, more subdued roles, nostalgia and mom-safe jokes. But there were still flashes of the Saturday Night Live legend we saw in "Billy Madison" and "Happy Gilmore": the 90ish-minute runtime, the non-sequiturs, and the cameos. Weddings are the topic of the week in this episode, with the Shat Crew discussing pre-wedding jitters, the cost of weddings, and how much of a role the groom should play. We also discuss Adam Sandler's singing, whether Linda got a bad rap, what constitutes cheating, and how well we can spot a freak in the sheets when we seem her in the streets. To top it all off, Ving Rhames calls in to discuss "Blood In Blood Out" and Big D gets passionate about vanilla ice cream. Ep 281Krull (1983)
ECan you really call yourself a retro movies podcast without reviewing the epic '80s film flop that refuses to die? At long last, Shat The Movies is digging its glaive into "Krull." On paper, this movie should have been the next "Star Wars." It has a massive budget, plush set design, a rousing James Horner musical score, freakin' lasers, a handsome lead, a strong princess, a wise mentor, mystical powers, an impenetrable stronghold, galactic consequences, a legendary weapon and Liam Neeson. But "Krull" showed just how hard it is to bring fantasy concepts to the silver screen. In this episode, the Shat Crew discusses how the "Krull" movie posters misled Big D, how less is more when it comes to special effects, why thieves and brawlers are so eager to join perilous quests, why geography matters in movies, and whether "Krull" delivered the worst action scenes in Shat The Movies history. Ep 280Blood In Blood Out (1993)
E"Blood In Blood Out" didn't just open our eyes to an undiscovered crime epic, this 1993 drama changed the way Gene talks, the way Big D watches film, and the way Ash plots her stabbings. Whether you first saw this love letter to East Los Angeles on DVD or through a mayonnaise-smeared YouTube screen, "Blood In Blood Out" hit you hard with its graphic violence, unexpected laughs, promising cast, and surprise sexuality. The action wasn't exactly "Heat," but it sure was fun to watch. And who could forget those plot twists spanning a three-hour runtime? It was like The Chicano Godfather. In this episode, the Shat Crew discusses who would last longest in prison, how far family obligations go, and whether Damian Chapa ruined the movie or was the only man alive who could play Miklo Velka. Ep 279Nuns on the Run (1990)
When listener Kev commissioned 1990's "Nuns on the Run," we were ready for a Shat The Movies sleeper hit. Monty Python's Eric Idle and Harry Potter's Hagrid together in a comedy about the English mob and religious orders sounds like a recipe for success. But sometimes too many cooks spoil the broth. Gene expected another "Withnail and I." Ash wanted something different from "Sister Act," and Big D wanted a romantic montage that lasted longer and meant something. We didn't get any of those things. But "Nuns on the Run" had its moments: a young Robbie Coltrane explaining the Holy Trinity, a few respectable puns, and some incredible surprise '90s boobs. We also got an overused joke about eyeglasses, an onslaught of tilted cameras and close-ups, a healthy dose of white male mediocrity, an incredibly English car chase, and surprisingly little running. Ep 278Full Metal Jacket (1987)
EWhen it comes to the greatest Vietnam war movie of all time, two films come to mind: Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now" and Stanley Kubrick's "Full Metal Jacket." Longtime listener Hot Sauce Steve was kind enough to commission the latter. Everyone remembers the belly laughs and jaw-dropping surprises in "Full Metal Jacket," R. Lee Ermey's unforgettable performance, Vincent D'Onofrio's body transformation, and the wealth of dark humor. But we don't always take the time to celebrate the film's sets or dig deeper into Kubrick's themes of dehumanization, indoctrination, and whether man can withstand the unnatural conditions of war. In this episode, the Shat Crew hears Big D's Sapper School Tales, explores sex-worker inflation, outlines the economics of short-time versus long-time, debates slow-motion deaths, and plans Ash's Chaturbate career. Ep 277Jumanji (1995)
ERobin Williams has a patchy history on "Shat The Movies." He shined in "Good Will Hunting" (don't tell Gene) and flopped in "Hook." Will "Jumanji" be his redemption? Sure, the special effects are a bit dated and the rules are a bit silly, but this movie has the nostalgia of the Caledecott Medal-winning book and the staying power of the recently refreshed series. "Jumanji" also has a great villain, a solid cast, and emotional notes that other Robin Williams movies sometimes lack. In this podcast, the Shat Crew discusses whitewashing the '60s, what jungle life can do to a man, easily frightened girls, indestructible Chevrolets, and the fallout from altering history. And, of course, we tell the world how we'd be so much better at playing a board game. Ep 276Blade (1998)
E"Blade" left a mark on every '90s teen—the music, the fashion, the detailed breakdown of the vampire economy—but many forget it also kicked off Marvel's string of cinematic success. It was darker than any superhero film we'd ever seen, and it had a sense of humor. With a blazing fast origin story and immediate action, this movie had our attention from the jump, inspiring conversations about the proper way for vampires to age, Wesley Snipes' fighting style, whether vampires should have a living wage, and how an ancient temple ends up in Detroit. In this episode, Big D volunteers to get "gothed up." Ash explains her undying attraction to Stephen Dorff, and Gene details how vampires are born. The Shat Crew also ranks the four bloodsucking movies it's covered so far: "Blade," "The Lost Boys," "Interview with the Vampire," "From Dusk Till Dawn," and "Bram Stoker's Dracula." Ep 275Silverado (1985)
EWhat would happen if a random group of Hollywood actors at an '80s cocktail party decided to make a Western? We found out with listener Jim Batten's commission of "Silverado." On paper, this movie has it all. Lawrence Kasdan wrote and directed it. Kevin Costner, Danny Glover, Brian Dennehy, Rosanna Arquette, and Scott Glenn starred in it. And the soundtrack flew off shelves. But "Silverado" also includes a few interesting casting choices like Jeff Goldblum, John Cleese, Linda Hunt, and Kevin Kline. The good guys grin their way through a "Westworld"-like environment with "Game of Thrones"-level plot armor, and glass is breaking EVERYWHERE. In this episode, Big D finally gets his training montage, Ash wishes "Silverado" were a TV series, and Gene marvels at pearls of Western wisdom. Ep 274Three O'Clock High (1987)
EJust when we thought we'd covered every '80s high school movie, listener Jen treated her husband and us to "Three O'Clock High," a sleeper comedy with a lovable hero, a horny teacher, and a climactic fight. "Three O'Clock High" got it right where lots of its peers got it wrong: Friends and siblings treat each other with genuine care. Each scene delivers on its punchlines. And Tangerine Dream's soundtrack actually makes the movie better. In this episode, Big D mansplains what "short" means and wonders if Buddy Revell is the king of '80s movie bullies. Ash spreads crack-baby rumors and asks about planned fights. And Gene attacks a Karen. The Shat Crew also discusses whether it's become the "Family Guy" of podcasts and argues that Casey Siemaszko would have made a terrific Marty McFly. Ep 273Ladyhawke (1985)
EPeople are always complaining that Hollywood's run out of ideas: Everything's a remake or a sequel or a comic book movie. But in 1985, things were wild. Wanna make a movie about a guy who turns into a wolf and a chick who turns into a bird so that they can never be together? Go for it; we'll even throw in Matthew Broderick and a score by Alan Parsons. The Shat Crew's been waiting a long time to do "Ladyhawke," but it took listener Jose to stand up, raise his sword high in the air, and dedicate this medieval fantasy in the name of true love. It's a movie that taught us not to take "Game of Thrones" for granted, a movie that Ash felt needed talking animals, and a movie that made Big D ponder life's big questions, like "Can a crossbow shoot a hawk in flight?" and "How does a werewolf get his clothes back?" But most of all, "Ladyhawke" was a movie that bet on Rutger Hauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Alfred Molina being able to bring a wild-ass tale with a funky-ass soundtrack to life. How did they do? Ep 272Taps (1981)
If you thought our "Red Dawn" episode was unpredictable and juvenile, buckle up for "Taps." This military-versus-civilians, young-against-old, leaders-versus-condominiums drama from 1981 introduced the world to Sean Penn, Tom Cruise, Timothy Hutton, and the king of wacky screen deaths, Giancarlo Esposito. "Taps" also highlighted what was so great about George C. Scott's portrayal of General George S. Patton, what was so terrible about Junior ROTC, how TikTok could have saved Bunker Hill Academy, and why young Gene Lyons always had a coin up his ass. Hear Judge Ash preside over John Rambo's involuntary manslaughter trial and draw the lines between "Taps" and "Les Miserables." Witness a beloved Gene arguing that "Taps" is basically Shakespeare. And discover the secrets of the Hot Carl and the Stinky Pinky with Dick Ebert. Ep 271The Last of the Mohicans (1992)
EIf you hate Gene, you'll love our "The Last of the Mohicans" episode. Ash is at the helm, with Dick Ebert and guest host Kevin R. Brackett (Reel Spoilers) rounding out the crew to explore romance, frontier life, and Big D's virginity. When it comes to period dramas from the early '90s, things often get a little goofy, but "The Last of the Mohicans" stands apart by getting a lot of things right: breathtaking cinematography, animalistic attraction, a killer score, historical accuracy, the chaos of battle, and the pain of sacrifice. Are the characters a little flat? Maybe. Is Hawkeye superhuman? Debatable. Is the Shat Crew gonna talk about old-timey sex? Oh, absolutely. Ep 270Jacob's Ladder (1990)
E"Shat The Movies" fans are horror fans, so we jumped at the chance to do a scary movie outside October. When longtime listener Carmelita commissioned "Jacob's Ladder," the Shat Crew collectively squealed. This 1990 Tim Robbins banger did lots of things we'd later see in '90s movies and beyond: non-linear storytelling, the questioning of reality, faceless doctors, and that wiggly head thing from Tool music videos. But it didn't stop there: "Jacob's Ladder" flipped the horror genre on its head by actually addressing death, not just killing. In this episode, Big D crushes Gene's romanticism about '70s New York City. Ash gives a crash course on the fragility of memory, and all three hosts marvel at just how cute Macaulay Culkin was at 9 years old. What did the ending mean? We'll get into that, too. Ep 269Friday (1995)
"Friday" wasn't the easiest episode to record, but it's one of our new favorites. After Big D recovered from his Strawberry Festival-induced hospitalization, the Shat Crew convened to debate whether certified stars like Chris Tucker, John Witherspoon, Regina King, "Tiny" Lister, Bernie Mac, and Michael Clarke Duncan could elevate a Zig-Zag-thin plot to a '90s comedy classic. In this episode, we discuss how Ice Cube and DJ Pooh succeeded in their mission to show a different side of the 'hood, how weed helped Big D "make it a Blockbuster night," and why it sometimes pays to party in dangerous places. Big D implores today's youth to "live in the moment" as we also cover the bathroom habits of POC, why Ash can't shower alone, "the conditions" in Atlanta, and terrible fight scenes. Ep 268The Grifters (1990)
E"Tequila Sunrise" commissioner Rachel C. returns with another '90s movie full of sexy people doing confusing things. This week, it's "The Grifters," a 1990 neo-noir thriller that proves even John Cusack, Anjelica Huston, and Annette Bening have their off days. This movie about con people and the con people who love them led to such classy topics as discount grandmas, boob fingerprints, nostalgia trolls, and the kinds of sexual favors landlords can reasonably expect from tenants attempting to seduce them. "The Grifters," nominated for multiple Academy Awards, also brought us the most unlikely death in Shat history and possible the worst heist since "Safe Men," proving critics love anything that hearkens back to old timey movies. Ep 267White Men Can't Jump (1992)
EShat The Movies Fantasy Basketball champion Don Sauce chose a movie he'd never seen before as his prize: "White Men Can't Jump." And what he got was perhaps Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes at their best. Like other Ron Shelton sports movies, this 1992 love letter to Los Angeles blends sex, psychology, and an underlying malaise to take the audience beyond the game and into life itself. In this episode, the Shat Crew discusses the history of white basketballers, how to get on "Jeopardy!", Rosie Perez' sex appeal, the lush dialogue of '90s movies, why Comic-Con has gone downhill and how to ask for sex in Portuguese. Ep 266Vice Versa (1988)
ETom Hanks' "Big" was the '80s film that started it all for "Shat The Movies," a massive hit everyone saw growing up. But a few months before "Big" hit theaters, another child-to-man body transformation movie took a slightly different approach. "Vice Versa" took an established Judge Reinhold and a brilliant young Fred Savage and shifted the focus to the adult trapped in a child's body. Along the way, we also got a not-so-iconic music scene, some '80s Asian mysticism, very strong arguments for taking PTO, and a glimpse into a Gene Lyons' day job. Ep 265Stargate (1994)
EIs "Stargate" as good as "Star Wars?" Maybe not. Is it every bit as fun? Possibly! Roland Emmerich's 1994 ode to Ancient Egypt boasts a surprisingly kickass musical score, some super creative costuming, and possibly the secrets to where Saddam Hussein hid his yellow cake. But it isn't without its problems. Your main villain, Ra, is utterly impractical with his security forces (what's with those helmets?), spacecraft (who flies a pyramid?), and body choice (may we suggest being Rodrigo Santoro next time?). Your heroes, despite being a hot James Spader and steely Kurt Russell, are hamstrung by terrible tactics (camping out in the open), a useless team (who cast French Stewart as a commando?), and little balls on their berets. And your main attraction, the titular Stargate, is a giant combination lock that ripped off "The Abyss" and defies any semblance of science. But none of that matters because this was the movie we all needed in 1994: fast-moving with a little action, a little romance, and a lot of half-naked children. In this episode of "Shat The Movies," we learn Big D didn't pluck his wife from the jungle, teachers are nerds, and why you should always "sleep with the gift." Ep 26412 Monkeys (1995)
E"12 Monkeys" has something for every member of the Shat Crew: An edgy, smart director for Ash, time travel for Dick Ebert, and loads of man butts for Gene. But is it the slick, mind-blowing film we remember from 1995, or does it fall flat in a post-pandemic America? As the Month of Steve continues, we dig into some tinfoil territory, questioning the nature of reality, whether the powers that be would ruin the world to stay in control, and whether Brad Pitt really deserved that Golden Globe. Is Dr. Reilly one of the worst sidekicks in movie history? Is the "12 Monkeys" score one of the most underappreciated compositions of the '90s? We answer these questions and more in this weeks Shat The Movies. Ep 263Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993)
EThe last time Shat The Movies took on a Mel Brooks movie, Big D spoiled Roger's and Gene's fun with a grumpy wipe score. Will "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" be a parody redemption, or will Dick Ebert's "Spaceballs" gloom spread to the rest of the Shat Crew? In this episode, commissioned by Hot Sauce Steve, we discuss who Mel Brooks jokes are for, the eternal hotness of Cary Elwes, why amazing songs make comedies even better, how many callbacks is too many callbacks, a young Dave Chappelle, a spicy Amy Yasbeck, an incredible Dom DeLuise, and what happened to the "Robin Hood" writing team after "Men in Tights." Ep 262It (1990)
EShat The Movies is no stranger to Stephen King movies, but we've never done a miniseries before. "It" taught us there's nothing more shat-tastic than mixing television icons like John Ritter, Harry Anderson, Richard Thomas, and Tim Reid with the horrifically bad TV production value of the '90s. But Hot Sauce Steve's commission wasn't all laughs. There were real scares: Parents not seeing the terrors unleashed upon the children of Derry; Tim Curry's unforgettable portrayal of Pennywise the clown; and of course late '80s home decor. In this episode, the Shat Crew discuss whether Bill Skarsgard's 2017 Pennywise was better, whether the golden age of communal TV viewing is over, if racial slurs are OK on network broadcasts, and what qualifies as a fat kid. Ep 261Alien (1979)
EMany '80s babies first met xenomorphs in 1986's "Aliens," but there just something special about the 1979 Ridley Scott masterpiece that started it all. It's more suspenseful, more thought-provoking, more groundbreaking. That doesn't mean we can't laugh at it. Face it: Mother is just a room of blinky lights, the ovamorphs look like lady parts, the crew of the Nostromo is hilarously reckless, and the chest-burster kinda resembles a demented Muppet. Kicking off Hot Sauce Steve's 5 weeks of Shat The Movies commissions, "Alien" inspires the Shat Crew to discuss Disneyworld's Great Movie Ride, Ripley's choice in underwear, why dogs are better that cats in space, and sexy milk people. Ep 260The Naked Gun (1988)
EWith a joke every 10 seconds, "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!" is considered by many the Gold Standard when it comes to '80s comedies. The gags are nonstop and forever burned into our brains, but is this 30-year-old movie based on a single-season TV show still funny? That depends on whether you like jokes about loud urination, tigers mauling baseball players, ballistic missiles driving into fireworks shops, and full-body condoms. We do. Other topics in this episode of Shat The Movies include the carefree vibe of the '80s, anti-montage parody montages, Ricardo Montelban's cool, Priscilla Presley's performance, what it means to let a joke breathe, and O.J. Ep 259An American Werewolf in London (1981)
EIt's another Shat The Movies horror-comedy, but this time we have an '80s classic. Longtime listener Rob T. reached out from across the pod to commission the 1981 John Landis masterpiece, "An American Werewolf in London." Big D's the star this week as we get more Ebert Animal Tips for Safety, hear why he thinks the British make the best horror movie victims, marvel at what it takes to convince Dick a film is a comedy, and learn how to use apartment tours to woo women. In this episode, we also cheer the practical effects (that transformation scene ... woof), wish for a Naughty Nina spinoff, discover what Bob Dylan and Michael Jackson have in common, and uncover the secret messages about Jewish life in an Anglo world. Ep 258Masters of the Universe (1987)
ESome commissioners present Shat The Movies with films they admire, hoping for low wipe scores and eternal glory in the Pantheon of Shat. Others serve us straight from toilet, understanding their favorite films are turds and deserve a whole roll of TP. Listener Will C. is the latter. We're kicking off 2022 with "Masters of the Universe," a movie that makes "Star Wars" look like irrefutable science and makes "Conan the Barbarian" feel Oscar-worthy. This one's a real battle between our love of campy schlock and the hard truth that big budgets don't always mean good cinema. Was the Sorceress perfection or pointless? Should the movie have focused on Earth or Eternia? Was Dolph Lundgren a god or a goober? Is this Courteney Cox in her prime, and how do you pronounce Frank Langella? The Shat Crew debates all this and more while agreeing on one thing: Fuck Gwildor. Ep 257Ravenous (1999)
EJust as fans feared (or cheered) Shat The Movies slipping into a pattern of covering '90s blockbuster films, listener Ben in Japan commissioned "Ravenous" to close out the 2021 Shat calendar. This cannibal Western horror comedy set during the Mexican-American War is about as quirky as cinema gets: a soundtrack by Damon Albarn of Blur, a cartoonish mass murderer, gross-out humor mixed with slapstick giggles. But a killer cast including Guy Pearce, Robert Carlyle, David Arquette, Jeffrey Jones, Jeremy Davies, and Neal McDonough keeps "Ravenous" oddly accessible and strangely fun. In this episode, the Shat Crew discusses the sounds of bagels and blowjobs, gross goatees, flashbacks that lack mystery, the danger of knives, the incredibly opportunity of being a wendigo in the Old West, and whether "Ravenous" is actually an allegory for repressed homosexuality. Ep 256In The Army Now (1994)
EWe dedicate this Shat The Movies episode to those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces and the people who love them. Oh, and Pauly Shore fans who feel horribly underserved by our existing catalog. You might think "In The Army Now" offends veterans of the Army and Army Reserve. It's irreverent, inaccurate, and inappropriate. But at least one Shat warfighter, The Colonel, finds it surprisingly ingenious. Among the cheap gags, inexplicable plot holes, and strange takes on sexuality is a movie showcasing a young Andy Dick, a sorta hot (according to Ash) Pauly Shore, and a pre-"Tank Girl" Lori Petty. There are some smarts, like an "Of Mice and Men" allusion, and some flat-out funny scenes, like a hilarious attack on a Libyan SCUD site. How will the Shat Crew ultimately rule on this movie? The results surprised Gene Lyons. In this podcast, you'll also hear about Big D's experiences in Basic Training, Gene's regrets about not serving, and Ash's queries about the military's water filtration needs. We also cover Dear John letters, Defense Directive 1304.26, and what it means to be "barracks hot." Ep 255Titanic (1997)
EPodcast releases don't get any bigger than this: A heroic band of listeners pulled together a special commission marking the massive milestone of 3 million Shat The Movies downloads on the 24th anniversary of the most epic film to hit theaters: "Titanic." There's no denying James Cameron's grand vision of capturing the Titanic's disastrous maiden voyage through a love story was a huge risk with a huge budget that broke box office records. But is it just a ghost ship with fond memories, or does Titanic's heart still go on? Ash is moved to tears. Big D spins up a theory on why Jack's responsible for the entire wreck. And Gene's love life gets supercharged by all the feels. This episode also includes Gene's story of why he guarded "Titanic" more closely than his virginity, Big D's moist recollection of the naked sketch scene, and Ash's celebration of Kate Winslet's beauty, despite Hollywood thinking the leading lady was overweight. Ep 254Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)
EEveryone knows about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it's time we gave the DC Animated Universe some love. "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm" marked the first time DC put an animated feature into theaters, and it changed the way we'd see Batman on screen for years to come. This 1993 release was loosely based on the graphic novel "Batman: Year One" and trade paperback "Batman: Year Two," so it had Gene's attention. And Big D watched a lot of "The Animated Series" while stoned in college. Needless to say, the Shat Crew was excited to visit a Gotham City envisioned by Bruce Timm and voiced by Mark Hamill, Kevin Conroy, Dana Delany, Stacy Keach, and Abe Vigoda. In this episode, Gene and Big D cover lawn sex, Batman's detective roots, what a weak villain The Phantasm was, a weird romance, bad boy billionaires, the real motivation behind Bruce Wayne dressing as Batman, Alfred's horrid lot in life, the secret intelligence behind the Batcomputer, and flashbacks ... so many flashbacks. Ep 252Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999)
EIs everyone fair game when it comes to comedy? What if the person lampooning an oppressed group is a member of that group? Does it change if it's a mockumentary? Listener Justin M. knew he was stirring up trouble when he commissioned 1999's "Drop Dead Gorgeous," a movie that looked at "Clueless" and said, "Hold my beer." Kirsten Dunst, Brittany Murphy, Denise Richards, Amy Adams, and Kirstie Alley had Ash and Big in tears with laughter. But Gene was just sad watching the film mock the poor, small-town folk, young women, the intellectually disabled, and people with eating disorders. In the debate, the Shat Crew also discussed gun culture, gross-out humor, and the original ending of "Drop Dead Gorgeous," which was much, much darker. Ep 251A League of Their Own (1992)
EWhen a longtime listener requests a movie review for her 16th birthday, Shat delivers. This week's commission is the 1992 baseball classic "A League of Their Own." And while it shines as a comedy featuring some of the '90s hottest names and future stars, there's a little dust on this old reel. The sibling rivalry is a little overblown. The social commentary is a little dated. And the real women behind the tale are overshadowed by some seriously silly storylines. But that doesn't stop Penny Marshall's $100 million hit from being funny, fun, and absolutely memorable. Reel Spoilers podcast's Kevin R. Brackett joins the Shat Crew this week to talk about our first cars, "A League of Their Own" the TV series, the debutante system, a loss of manners, prison-yard rules, baseball safety, and whether Dottie threw the World Series. We also test out movie concepts starring Ash, including a post-apocalyptic Little League drama, and debate whether Bill Pullman's character, Bob, was a war hero or just lame. Ep 250Dutch (1991)
EThanksgiving movies are difficult to find, and quality Thanksgiving movies are even more elusive. Thankfully, listener Adam R. gifted us with the underrated 1991 road trip comedy "Dutch," an experience that revealed just how different your Shat hosts are in their approaches to children. Gene argues sometimes a kid needs to get punched in the mouth. Ash believes there no reason to hit your offspring, and Big D encourages tough love but draws the line at his mother's rug beater. Along the way, the Shat Crew cheers Christopher MacDonald, appreciates Ethan Embry, and questions whether "Dutch" is a great Ed O'Neill movie or just an OK John Hughes flick. We also discuss Gene's "horny shivers," Big D's teen virility, Christmas stress, how to help people in need, and Ash's first experience with porn. Ep 249The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)
EIn honor of listener Stephanie Q's beloved cat, Priscilla, we review an Australian film that put drag queens on the global stage and opened the door for Ash to educate Gene and Big D on "reading," "spilling tea," and "fishy queens." "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" gave cinema a visual spectacle, a new perspective on homophobia, incredible costumes, and tremendous performances by Hugo Weaving, Terence Stamp, and Guy Pearce. But it also telegraphed its big reveal, marginalized characters based on race and sex, and fell a bit flat in its finale. In this episode of Shat The Movies, Ash provides a history of drag and feminism. Gene declares that anyone doing a drag show while their bus is broken in the Outback deserves to die. And Big D goes on a pro-ABBA rampage while insisting everyone respect Gene's vagina. Ep 248Bull Durham (1986)
EWith more than 240 movies under our belts, Shat The Movies finally feels qualified to review the greatest sports film of all time: "Bull Durham." A young Tim Robbins, a sexy Kevin Costner, and a ripe Susan Sarandon do the unthinkable in this '80s classic: They surface the joy, sensuality, intelligence, passion, drama, and hard truths about baseball, a sport that's drifted into some very dull times. In this episode, Big D tells us what he believes in. Ash tells us about trying out for Little League, and Gene finds a new role model in Crash Davis. The Shat Crew also recall our favorite minor-league baseball memories and find one tiny flaw in this otherwise perfect film. Ep 247Stand By Me (1986)
EBig D was so conflicted on his feelings toward "Stand By Me" that he took an extra 24 hours to process the Rob Reiner classic before delivering his verdict. It's not a fun movie, per se, but it generated some honest reflection from the Shat Crew. Gene was reminded of his childhood friendships, his relationship with The King Bee, and adventures along train tracks. Ash lamented Facebook's refusal to let high school acquaintances fade away, and Big D shared how seeing his first dead body changed his view on death. Also on this episode, the trio discuss whether parents have favorite children, whether Stephen King is a one-trick pony, how to remove leeches, and a theory on Ace Merrill being turned into David Powers from "The Lost Boys." And finally, Ash confronts Big D about rumors he wants her off the podcast.
