Ep 346Allan Quatermain and The Lost City of Gold (1986)

E

In our first back-to-back reviews of a film and its sequel, Shat The Movies presents "Allan Quatermain and The Lost City of Gold," the 1986 flop that answers the question: "what if leftover French fries were a movie?" In the second half of listener MoonlitTear's double commission, Gene Lyons boldly declares the movie series that kicked off with "King Solomon's Mines" isn't quite as good as the "Godfather" trilogy. Dick Ebert notes that only four people were credited with the "Lost City" special effects, and both Shat hosts struggle to make sense of an economy that's overflowing with gold but still insists on using slaves. James Earl Jones did his best to rescue this movie as the anchor to the world's worst Dungeons & Dragons party, while Sharon Stone earned herself a Golden Raspberry nomination for returning to her role as Jesse Huston. Was "Lost City" a parable for apartheid or just a terribly misunderstood parody? Listen to this week's podcast and decide for yourself! Ep 345King Solomon's Mines (1985)

E

"Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny" just hit theaters, the fifth installment in the legendary Harrison Ford series. But a lesser-known archeological adventure didn't enjoy the same success. This week, it's Richard Chamberlain in "King Solomon's Mines." Is it a "Temple of Doom" knock-off? A parody? An homage? We're not sure, but "King Solomon's Mines" is a script with origins more than a century old. Shat The Movies megadonor MoonlitTear drew our attention to this quirky flick featuring a young Sharon Stone, "Indiana Jones" star John Rhys-Davies and loads of horny Germans. In this first of a two-part podcast special, the Shat Crew learned about The Canon Group, 19th century racism and just how dark Indiana Jones could have gotten. Have a listen and join us next week for the sequel: "Allan Quatermain and The Lost City of Gold." Ep 344Speed (1994)

E

We all remember the big explosions and daring stunts in "Speed," but some of the biggest risks had nothing to do with the on-screen mayhem. Hiring Ted "Theodore" Logan as an action star? Casting Jeff Daniels as a grizzled police vet? Letting Dennis Hopper anywhere near explosives? Mega-commissioner Jackson M. thought it just wasn't right for us to review "Speed 2" without covering the original, and we were more than happy to oblige. This nonstop thriller is Jan de Bont's solo directorial debut and the film that made Sandra Bullock America's mid-90s sweetheart. It's also a motion picture that displays zero concept of Los Angeles traffic and makes an excellent case for just paying off terrorists. In this edition of Shat The Movies, Dick Ebert revisits his Blockbuster Video homage to Ron Jeremy and attempts to imitate a person of color for the third episode in a row. Gene learns that Annie Porter was nearly played by Ellen DeGeneres. And Emma Ebert makes a cameo appearance. We also hear voicemail about Welsh views on "Wayne's World" and Tennessee opinions on the Goblin King's age. Ep 343Airplane! (1980)

E

"Airplane!" ranks sixth on Bravo's 100 Funniest Movies and has more laughs per minute than any other film, but none of that matters. The real question is: Did Gene Lyons like it? In this episode commissioned by listener Kiki, the Shat Crew covers a long-overdue '80s comedy classic that mixes heavy parody, genius non-verbal jokes and delightfully offensive material. Dick Ebert explains that every time he watches "Airplane!" he discovers a new punchline. And Gene applauds performances from Peter Graves, Robert Stack and Julie Hagerty. The guys also cover the infamous Otto scene, the line that keeps giving and whether Johnny was gay. If you enjoy episodes where Big D and Gene disagree, give this one a listen. Ep 342Beowulf (1999)

E

Remember when we covered "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation" and wondered why Christopher Lambert had be replaced as Raiden? This week, we got our answer: Shat The Movies' favorite Frenchman was busy filming "Beowulf." On paper, this 1999 sci-fi adaptation of the Old English epic poem sounds like a disaster. In fact, movie commissioner Emmet in Orange had never even seen "Beowulf" when he requested a review. Filmed on a $3 million budget, this Mortal Kombat-style action-adventure is loaded with anachronistic dialogue, comically odd weapons, overcomplicated gadgets, incredible cleavage and combat that mostly consists of doing flips. This movie's plot armor makes "Game of Thrones" Season 8 seem reasonable. The soundtrack and bring-your-own-costume style feel like we've slipped into a 1990s Romanian rave, and watching poor Rhona Mitra seduce Christopher Lambert hurt our souls. In this episode, we discuss the monster who could have been beaten by Kevin McCallister, the succubus who stepped right off the set of a Whitesnake video and how Big D gained 24 pounds in just four days of hanging out with Gene. Ep 341The Wraith (1986)

E

Charlie Sheen scored some hits in the 1980s: "Red Dawn," "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "Young Guns," "Platoon" and "Major League." But only one movie featured him as a resurrected racer with a killer Dodge M4S Turbo Interceptor. It's "The Wraith!" Independent films in the '80s were wild, and "The Wraith" is no exception. Antifreeze-chugging punks, made-up slang and something called a "digital radio killer" didn't seem strange in a time when Randy Quaid could play an indifferent sheriff, bullies could just own girls and cars could put themselves back together with zero explanation. In this episode, Big D quizzes Gene on the names of Arizona landmarks; Gene explains how "The Wraith" killed one of its cameramen; and both Shat hosts agree the hero of the movie is a jerk. Ep 340Tango & Cash (1989)

E

"Tango & Cash" was the final major motion picture released in the 1980s. Like a fish born with legs, this 1989 action-comedy showed signs of evolution into a new age but sucked ass at swimming. Big D didn't know "Tango & Cash" was supposed to be comedy. Gene wondered why the movie failed so hard at depicting journalism and court proceedings. And both hosts were shocked at the entire prison plotline. In this episode, The Shat Crew asks A.I. to assist with new action-star pairings (Chuck Norris and Van Damme, anyone?), apologizes to Teri Hatcher, wonders if Jack Palance is OK, and braces for an HBO reboot from the makers of "True Detective." Ep 339Return to Oz (1985)

E

If you've ever wondered what went wrong with Fairuza Balk's childhood, listener David D. has the answer. That's why he commissioned the dark-ass 1985 Disney flop "Return to Oz." Don't be fooled by the made-for-TV movie poster, this sequel to 1939's "The Wizard of Oz" is loaded with terrific effects including an animatronic talking chicken and a princess who can swap out her heads. The sets are amazing, the costumes are at least interesting, and the messages about childhood and mental illness are pretty advanced for a kids' movie. In this episode, the Shat Crew weighs Oz villains against one another, asks what exactly Wheelers do, suggests design improvements for Tik-Tok, shames Auntie Em and pays respects to an overlooked movie that never got the praise it deserved. Ep 338Jaws (1975)

E

In a surprisingly educational episode, the Shaw Crew learns that sharks are playful, '70s parenting was utterly irresponsible and Richard Dreyfuss was the original hipster. It's the summer blockbuster that started it all: "Jaws!" When listener Tracy C. commissioned this Steven Spielberg masterpiece, we knew we'd be talking about Big D peeing his pants, how good the movie looks in UHD, how what you don't show can be as scary as what you reveal and why good horror movies kill children. But we didn't expect to be praying for Dick's TV to die, groaning over criminal foreshadowing or praising "Jaws" for its character development. Was the shark a dick or just hungry? Were Brody, Quint and Hooper just bad at hunting great whites? Did you catch those boobs at the beginning? Ep 337Deep Rising (1998)

E

Do you like pirate movies? How about insurance fraud thrillers? Action films with giant sea monsters? Well, one 1998 movie decided to combine them all and cast Famke Janssen as an international master thief. It's time for "Deep Rising!" In this episode, Big D imagines a world where artificial intelligence writes movie screenplays and has the common sense to keep the monster secret until the characters have been established. Gene notes how the entire cast is made of second-stringers, and the King Bee salutes Shat The Movies' first tentacle-through-a-toilet kill. The Shat Crew also discusses the M1-L1 Triple Pulse Rifle, overpowered weaponry and how the movie absolutely neglected its most promising character. The CGI was bad, the continuity was questionable, and the King Kong tie-in was a bit of a surprise, but the Sea Doo stunts might have made the whole experience worth it. Maybe all we needed was Harrison Ford. Ep 336Splash (1984)

E

What do you get the mermaid fanatic who has everything? Might we suggest Dick Ebert discussing the sex lives of cryptids and Gene drooling over Daryl Hannah? It's 1984's "Splash!" In this episode celebrating listener Stephanie Q's birthday, the Shat Crew praises one of the few '80s slow-motion scenes that works, applauds surprisingly well-developed characters, and worries about how long Tom Hanks would survive under the sea. "Splash" was Touchstone Pictures' first release, allowing Disney to flex some of its adult muscles, and we're grateful. It gave us the chance to talk about The King Bee ghosting Gene on their movie date, Eugene Levy typifying the incels of the '80s, and "The Boys" venturing into utterly unwatchable territory. Through it all, we witnessed a terrific protagonist in Allen Bauer, who had his priorities straight and dove headlong into love. Ep 335The Muppet Movie (1979)

E

In a rare trip to the 1970s, Big D and Gene examine the Jim Henson film that started it all: "The Muppet Movie." Sharing a respect for the wild characters and expert puppeteering in this 1979 road comedy, the Shat Crew digs into the surprisingly adult themes, delightfully quiet jokes and clever self-awareness. On the other hand, "The Muppet Movie" drags at times before culminating in a gorgeous ensemble ending. In this episode, the Shat Crew covers a real-life Orson Welles, songs that go on too long, "The Muppet Movie" legacy and whether Animal is overrated. Ep 334Dances With Wolves (1990)

E

We can thank Kevin Costner's "Dances With Wolves" for reinvigorating Westerns for the '90s, leading to other Shat movies like "Tombstone" and "Unforgiven." For '80s kids, it also served as a gateway to exploring American Indian culture and history. Despite questionable mustaches and a conspicuous score, "Dances With Wolves" was visually stunning, emotionally effective and, in Ash's case, occasionally terrifying. Yes, it still had some corny narration and gratuitous slow-motion. But that's the '90s, baby! In this episode, Gene applauds Costner for casting a "kinda old" lead lady. Ash hails "Dances With Wolves" as the model of using a simple story to great impact, and Big D asks how John Dunbar became fluent in Lakota. The Shat Crew also discusses the buffalo hunt, the noble savage, brain damage from repeated blows to the head and how much Americans suck. Ep 333Halloween III: Season of The Witch (1982)

E

"Great song ... great masks ... the plan sucks." That's how Dick Ebert summed up the infamous bait-and-switch horror classic "Halloween III: Season of The Witch," a movie that taught us what happens when you take the slasher out of a slasher series. Rob in Colchester commissioned this 1982 film, recorded a jingle for it and shared his mind-blowing theories on why a super-hot, grieving daughter would bang an alcoholic doctor, why TV stations would take orders from that doctor and why killer androids let him live. In this episode, Gene learns about Mr. Beast and immediate hates him. Big D teaches us how to punch dolphins, and Ash wonders what Irishness has to do with the Halloween franchise. The Shat Crew also praises the realness of Halloween III's black characters, suggests casting Jeff Goldblum instead of Tom Atkins and explores the drop-off in kids watching TV. Ep 332Stripes (1981)

E

"Stripes" surfaced some pretty great Army stories from Big D— including the joy's of kitchen duty, henpecked drill sergeants, incompetent officers and what it means to be a Five-Jump Chump—while giving us a glimpse of '80s comedy giants in their prime. Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, John Candy, Judge Reinhold, John Larroquette, Sean Young and even Bill Paxton (blink and you'll miss him) brought their youth and talent to this classic war comedy that served up boobs by the dozen. In this episode, Dick and Gene shred Chevy Chase, offer strip-club advice, champion the underrated EM-50 urban assault vehicle, compare the sex toys of the '80s to our modern arsenal and debate whether "Stripes" should have been split into two movies. The Shat Crew also fields a voicemail seeking justice for Jean-Claude Van Damme's reputation as a lover. And Big D discovers he has a writing job waiting for him at Marvel Studios. Ep 331Ninja Scroll (1993)

E

In our family-friendly, post-Pixar world, it's easy to forget kids of the '90s enjoyed some adult animation—some VERY adult animation. If you're into ultraviolence, overcomplicated plots, fingerbanging, poison kisses and superb boobs, "Ninja Scroll" is the movie for you. Listener Eric C. encouraged "Shat The Movies" to embrace all those things in the Crew's first viewing of this 1993 Japanese animation classic. And boy did we! Along the way, Ash noted the film's influence on "The Matrix," Dick Ebert felt the comic book nostalgia of his youth, and Gene Lyons asked, "Are the Japanese OK?" Other topics on this episode include: Are anime characters Asian? Are some superpowers just too much? Do women anime fans exist? And how should you let down a ninja who offers to save your life with sex? Ep 330That Thing You Do! (1996)

E

What do Spin Doctors, Dave Matthews Band, Billy Corgan and Styx have in common? They all get trashed in this episode of Shat The Movies (Cock Sparrer was spared.) It's the 1996 comedy "That Thing You Do!" Tom Hanks wrote, directed and starred in this squeaky-clean look at the 1960s, so you know it can't be terrible. But was it great? Depends on what you're looking for. "That Thing You Do!" has a catchy song, a handsome cast, Liv Tyler crying, nostalgia by the truckload, a cute epilogue and family-friendly language. It also has an abundance of foreshadowing, double magical negro and a few plot holes. In this episode, Ash joins Gene and Dick on the Old Shat Porch, Gene wishes gatekeepers would return to entertainment and Big D demands more sex, drugs and failure. Ep 329The Name of The Rose (1986)

E

"The Name of The Rose" is a movie that features the exact same robe worn by Obi-Wan Kenobi in "Star Wars." It's also the 1986 unholy whodunnit that reinvigorated Sean Connery's career. Blessed with an incredible set and impeccable sound, plus an all-star cast including Christian Slater, F. Murray Abraham and a very naked Valentina Vargas, this international mystery seemed to have it all—unless you're looking for attractive monks or a plot that differs from "The Phantom Menace." In this episode, Big D and Gene do their best Ron Perlman impressions and admit they'd bow down to The Inquisition. Gene learns about vagina patches. Ep 328The Craft (1996)

E

"My problem isn't with this movie: It's with you two." - Dick Ebert Everyone's favorite everyman was flummoxed this week as his co-hosts drooled over "The Craft," a movie hand-picked for them by legendary Shat The Movies listener Jen D. When Big D complained that the coven's four witches were "too hot to be outcasts," Ash explained she was a hot outcast. When Big D explained women, Ash countered that she is a woman. And when Big D questioned the friendships depicted in the film, Gene underscored the importance of Bagel Dogs in forging bonds. Was "The Craft" about female empowerment or just a revenge fantasy? Did it tackle serious topics or fail to find a tone? Can $100,000 really change a life, and what really happens at sleepovers? E

Ahead of Gene Lyons' big day, Dick and Ash share their married-life wisdom as Shat The Movies travels once again to Australia for the 1994 comedy "Muriel's Wedding." As expected, this movie led to some fierce debate between Big D, who detests Muriel's selfishness, and Ash, who simply adores pre-glow-up Toni Collette. Ep 326Near Dark (1987)

E

Until we watched "Near Dark," the Shat Crew was blissfully unaware that vampires' true supernatural power wasn't immortality: It was prudent decision-making and wise investments. In her 1987 solo directorial debut, Kathryn Bigelow changed the way we viewed bloodsuckers by giving us a dusty, trashy and (much to Big D's horror) irresponsible brood of vamps. Gene uses this episode to complain about Easter eggs for the stupid. Ash argues that the protagonist is just a crappy Louis de Pointe du Lac. Big D cringes at all the wasted blood. And Bill Paxton just makes the whole thing a lot more fun. The Shat Crew also covers Six Degrees of James Cameron, when less is more with practical effects, whether blood transfusion could cure vampirism and why you should shut your windows when vampires are creeping around your farm. Ep 325Great Expectations (1998)

E

"Shat The Movies" has seen its share of literary adaptations but never one that inspired Big D to draw, Gene to regain his teen mojo and Ash to besmirch the good name of coastal Florida. It's Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations!" This 1998 drama looks great on paper, boasting a star-studded cast including Robert De Niro, Ethan Hawke, Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Cooper, Hank Azaria and Anne Bancroft. The killer soundtrack features two original songs by Tori Amos and Pulp (remember that nude posing scene? Yow!) And yet somehow the director, Alfonso Cuaron, was disappointed in how it turned out. So we re-watched "Great Expectations" for commissioner Rachel C. and came up with our own ideas of where the movie falls short (mainly costuming) and where it really shines (sexy times). In this episode, find out why Big D hated the art, why Ash loved the sets, why Gene felt weird and how the whole movie did Joe dirty. If you love Rhode Island accents, relish period pieces that forget the period and hate Gene Lyons, our "Outside Providence" podcast is the episode for you! As Ash and Big Dildo dig into this 1999 Farrelly Brothers comedy (written, not directed), they discover the limits of Alec Baldwin's acting, question the movie's pointless inclusion of dark scenes and seriously doubt Shawn Hatosy's sexual prowess. Ash points out that "Outside Providence" marks the tail end of the Age of Prep School Movies. And Dick offers handy tips on how Ritalin can maximize your fire watch. Ep 323Rad (1986)

E

BMX bikes! "Send Me An Angel!" Lori Loughlin in a Mongoose bicycle suit! It's the Shat The Movies episode we've been waiting six months to debut: "Rad!" Listener Frank Falls commissioned this 1986 bicycle-racing stuntfest, promoted it and put thunder in all our hearts. But in today's Xtreme Games environment, can Cru Jones' speed and tricks still wow a crowd? Does the bicycle boogie still inspire romance? Will Gene Lyons ever learn to bunny hop? In this episode, Big D questions whether the bad guys really knew anything about making money, praises the town of Cochrane for being so pro-kid and tells the tale of how his dream bike was stolen while he was returning a VHS rental. Gene adds to the mix by highlighting 1980s hot dog prices, pointing out some gruesome wrecks and pleading with the Shat The Movies audience to validate Cru's race-winning spin move. If you've ever wondered how Jean-Claude Van Damme became an international action star, there's one '80s movie you need to see: "Bloodsport." This episode, commissioned by listener Adam from Texas, calls on Gene Lyons' deep martial arts expertise, Ash's opinions on muscle men and Big D's childhood dream of climbing with ninja claws. Along the way, the Shat Crew also discusses the efficacy of fighting monkey style, the utility of eight-minute cinematic flashbacks, training vs. torture, how a referee fits into a full-contact tournament, journalistic integrity in the face of sexy splits, what the Army does when an officer goes AWOL and what the hell Forest Whitaker was doing in this movie. Ep 321Teen Wolf (1985)

E

When Hot Sauce Steve won the Shat Fantasy Basketball title, he decided to give back to the Shat community by commissioning the long-overdue '80s werewolf basketball comedy "Teen Wolf." Riding hot on the coattails of "Back to The Future," this low-budget comedy timed its release just right, seizing on Michael J. Fox's superstar status (and the fact Scott Howard is basically Marty McFly). Join Dick Ebert and Gene Lyons as they discuss whether Harold was a responsible dad, whether scoring beer is as hard as the movies make it look and whether Scott's transformation into The Wolf still holds up. The boys also tackle the ins and outs of wolf sex, question if being a girl's one-and-done is really all that bad and propose streaming services should now offer a soundtrack-swap option. Ep 320Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997)

E

When listener Ryley moved out of her parents' house for the first time and needed a comfort movie, "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation" was there. We humbly offer this Shat The Movies review to the elder gods in hopes we all someday discover our inner animalities. From terrible CGI to imbalanced audio, this sequel to 1995's "Mortal Kombat" proved you can't just swap out the cast, throw in a whole bunch of new characters, rip off Sub-Zero's mask and expect video game fans to accept it. You also can't make Raiden mumble mumbo jumbo while dressed as a suburban dad or kill off Johnny Cage in the first five minutes without clarifying he's actually dead. Even Mortal Kombat's legendary soundtrack sagged under the weight of Jax's "urban" dialog and Barraka's rubber blades. And just when we thought we'd seen the worst, the dragon fight everyone had forgotten became the final battle nobody could unsee. Ep 319Flash Gordon (1980)

E

We have only ourselves to blame for this one. Well, actually, it's pretty much all Big D's fault: Shat The Movies finally found the courage (and the commissioner) to tackle the 1980 space opera "Flash Gordon." Whether you thought this horny Dino De Laurentiis fantasy was a terrific comic book adaptation or just a crappy "Star Wars" ripoff, it's certainly a film that's instantly recognizable through sight or sound. That Queen anthem, those wild colors and costumes: This is a movie best enjoyed on hallucinogens ... pantless. Gene found a new personal hero in Topol, the Hebrew Harrison Ford. Dick appreciated the female empowerment. And Ash asked, "How many times can Flash Gordon die?" In this episode, the Shat Crew also covered Max von Sydow in yellow face, faulty rocket designs, Chekov's pitot-static tube, psychological scarring from the "Wood Beast" and the tragic tale of a trilogy that died in the cradle. Ep 318Back to School (1986)

E

Dick and Gene agree "Back to School" is Rodney Dangerfield's best movie, but does it deserve mention among the greatest '80s comedies? Not if you ask Ash. This 1986 college classic, commissioned by a listener who himself is going back to school, reminded the Shat Crew that Dangerfield has crazy eyes, Robert Downey Jr. was an adorable little scamp, and Big D is oblivious to racism in film. In this episode, we pay homage to Burt Young, learn how to tell if your child is lying, debate appropriate classroom behavior, discover a new kind of jock bully and ask the crucial question: "Where did all the college bars go?" Ep 317Judgment Night (1993)

E

Was "Judgment Night" just "The Hangover" for the '90s? Was it just "Adventures in Babysitting" but for bros? Or was this 1993 urban thriller a truly experimental film with a pioneering rap-rock soundtrack to match? Loading up a cast with Emilio Estevez, Cuba Gooding Jr., Dennis Leary, Jeremy Piven, Stephen Dorff and Everlast (yes, that guy from House of Pain) seems like a safe way to score a box-office hit, but believe us when we say this movie brought out the weirdest parts of their acting abilities. If you've ever wished your dude friends didn't get married, Waze had never been invented and Chicago's South Side never got gentrified, "Judgment Night" is the movie for you. If you're the type of person who can't keep quiet while being hunted by killers, this movie will make you feel understood. If you're a fan of beautiful hair, slasher movies and bringing a belt to a gunfight, you're in luck. Just don't forget your cowboy boots and fishbowl RV. Ep 316Caveman (1981)

E

How do you ruin a 1981 comedy featuring the talents of Dennis Quaid, Jack Gilford and Shelley Long? Make it about cavemen, and give Ringo the Starr role. Gene Lyons downed an entire six pack while recording this one, so buckle up. "Caveman" was somehow too childish to be a movie for adults and too adult to be a movie for kids. It had claymation dinosaurs but also a rape scene. It was timid in its surprise lack of surprise boobs yet startlingly evolved on topics of homosexuality and race. And, of course, this slapstick comedy commissioned by listener Kelly B. generated some unexpected rants including Big D's disappointment in the closed captioning, Gene's understanding of Jane Goodall, genetic diversity among prehistoric peoples of Southern California and Roger Roeper's indictment of Allied Forces in "Saving Private Ryan." Ep 315The Ice Pirates (1984)

E

When Big D and Roger came up with the idea for "Shat The Movies," they knew they wanted to start with all the films that defined the '80s and '90s. Movies like "Big," "Pretty Woman" and, of course, "The Ice Pirates." It took six years, but finally Pirates' ship has come in. In this episode, Gene notes how "The Ice Pirates" really forgot it was set in space. Dick applauds the movie for being consistent in its crappiness, and Ash critiques Anjelica Huston's swordfighting prowess. The Shat Crew also discusses castration via conveyor belt, the film's dramatic undertones and Big D's theory that "The Ice Pirates" inspired the Burning Man festival. Ep 314This Is Spinal Tap (1984)

E

The Christopher Guest mockumentary that started it all, "This Is Spinal Tap," blended brilliant musical parodies and absurd non-sequiturs well ahead of its time in 1984. It was so convincing that a young Gene Lyons and a drunken Ozzy Osbourne thought Spinal Tap was a real band. In this episode, Shat The Movies commissioner Scott H. in Friendswood, Texas, treats Ash to one of her favorite comedies. Consider it a Christmas gift full of amazing one-liners, cringe harmonies, jaw-dropping cameos and a strange sense of heart. We all remember "it goes to 11," but so many other gags make "This Is Spinal Tap" worth rewatching in 2022: Stonehenge, exploding drummers, flower people, Australians' nightmares and "Big Bottoms." Ep 313Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999)

E

At Shat The Movies, we believe representation matters. And it's never been more apparent than when we sat down to review "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me." Was Mustafa offensive? Ask Gene. Was Fat Bastard gross? Ask Big D. And though the Shat Crew all agreed Heather Graham achieved peak hotness in this 1999 sequel, we were divided on other issues. Ash argued workplace hookups are inevitable. Gene argued Dr. Evil's "Just The Two of Us" rap was tasteless. And Dick Ebert argued that he could fight off 20 Mini-Mes. In this episode, you'll hear the final verdict on whether Mike Myers is funny, why "The Spy Who Shagged Me" might be the most 1999 movie of all time and how Seth Green made the film funnier. Ep 312Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)

E

Guy Ritchie enters the Halls of Shat with the 1998 feature film debut that revealed an unsanitized London to hip American teens and twentysomethings: "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels." We all expected the comparisons of Ritchie to Quentin Tarantino, but none of us anticipated where the conversation would go after that: Ash's personality trait test, Big D's tips on knocking people out, and rumors of anal beads helping a chess master cheat. Is "Lock, Stock" perfect? It might lack women characters, drag at parts and have so much English slang it should be labeled sci-fi, but the Shat Crew can't deny Jason Statham, Lenny McLean and Vinny Jones made the movie a lot of fun. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of "A Few Good Men," the Shat Crew dissect the military mentality, relish Aaron Sorkin's flair for dialog and hate themselves for loving Tom Cruise. Big D argues it isn't a court drama while Ash and Gene debate whether the lawyering feels real. Along the way, your hosts cover "code reds," Demi Moore's outfits, whether Lt. Ep 310Dead Man (1995)

E

Is "Dead Man" the most interesting Western of the '90s, or did Jim Jarmusch just succeed at shooting a really pretty Johnny Depp in black-and-white for two hours? That depends on what you understood of the movie, and Gene didn't understand much. While Ash struggled to stay awake, an increasingly healthy Big D got really into this 1995 box office flop that sparked conversations on cannibalism, Savage X Fenty, how trains work, Chatroulette, Neil Young's musical score and the Texas Renaissance Festival. Ep 309Blue Thunder (1983)

E

Before there was "Airwolf," before there was "Fire Birds," one movie stood alone as the epitome of helicopter action: "Blue Thunder." It's the movie that inspired Big D to be a pilot, showed us how to "dust" a perp, and made JAFO a household name. It also taught a 10-year-old in the UK how to cuss. And that 10-year-old grew up to be Shat The Movies commissioner Omar, who somehow understood "Blue Thunder" was about the surveillance state and police militarization. We just thought it was about naked high-rise yoga. Starring three legitimate badasses—Roy Scheider, Warren Oates and Malcolm McDowell—"Blue Thunder" illustrated what happens when combat veterans and single moms don't reach out for help, why it's weird to sexualize machines, how to dodge a missile in a crowded urban area and why looping a helicopter isn't all that useful. Ep 308Natural Born Killers (1994)

E

Can a movie that scandalized America in 1994 continue to shock us today? Not really, but Oliver Stone's "Natural Born Killers" still has a lot going for it: a perfectly composed cast, a kickass soundtrack and incredible chemistry between Juliette Lewis and Woody Harrelson. With Quentin Tarantino's fingerprints all over it, "Natural Born Killers" spans everything from sensationalized murders to sweat lodges and somehow manages to effortlessly serve up a love story in the mix. In this episode, the Shat Crew explores the movie's haphazard use of black-and-white shots that look like they came from a rowboat, why Blockbuster Video employees hated Oliver Stone, Dick Ebert's rules for mushrooms, how artists change when they're clean and why all bald men should shave their heads. Ep 307Romper Stomper (1992)

E

Gene's comment that he didn't "enjoy Australian cinema" triggered quite a few rebuttals in the form of Shat The Movies commissions. And neo-Nazi drama "Romper Stomper" just might be the one that changed his mind. Before there was 2000's "Gladiator" or 2012's "Les Miserables," a young Russell Crowe was looking mighty fine while sporting tighty whities, engaging in some ultraviolence, and throwing in a little surprise doggystyle. But make no mistake, "Romper Stomper" was a serious film that straddled the line between zombie movie and "American History X." And it made some points that are incredibly relevant today. In this episode, the Shat Crew discusses odd editing choices, racist stereotypes, the history of Footscray and the tragic tale of Crowe's co-star Daniel Pollock. E

Shat on TV listeners begging us to cover "House of The Dragon" finally get their wish in this week's Shat The Movies feature: "Arthur." This episode commissioned by David K. also explores what to wear shoplifting and features tons of listener mail. Dudley Moore and John Gielgud aren't household names in America, but the two English legends created an 1981 comedy alongside the goddess Liza Minnelli that distilled the essence of New York. "Arthur" led the Shat Crew to conversations about Christopher Cross' theme song for the movie, being stage drunk, surprise tears, unnecessary cruelty, Russell Brand, the pressure of growing up wealthy and how Scotch led to the prevalence of roosters in '90s New Orleans kitchens. Ep 305Blue Velvet (1986)

E

Few directors have polarized the Shat Crew's wipe scores the way David Lynch has, and few David Lynch movies are as polarizing as "Blue Velvet." With odd peccadillos, unsettling violence, over-the-top symbolism and entrancing dreamlike sequences, this 1986 had Ash gushing and the boys cringing. But talk about a career-builder! "Blue Velvet" changed the way moviegoers saw Isabella Rossellini, Dennis Hopper, Laura Dern and Kyle MacLachlan. It gave us a more straightforward Lynch tale, and it recalibrated the Shat The Movies definition of surprise boobs. Whether you view it as a masterful depiction of primal human behavior hidden behind a suburban veneer or just a really weird movie with some of the worst dirty talk ever filmed, "Blue Velvet" is definitely one to watch ... but maybe not rewatch. E

"The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is, without a doubt, a Halloween movie. It's got blood, gore, murders, a creepy castle — what more do you want? And the best way to see it is in a crowd, so Big D flew 5,000 miles to experience his first viewing in a theater with props, a shadow cast and Gene Lyons. In this Shat The Movies Halloween Spooktacular commissioned by listener Jeremy, Ash joins Dick and Gene to discuss whether the "Time Warp" deserves to be the film's most famous song, whether Dr. Frank N. Ep 303First Blood (1982)

E

Before Rambo was an action figure, cartoon character, and lunchbox cover, Sylvester Stallone starred in "First Blood," an action-drama that spotlights the displaced and disillusioned veterans of the Vietnam War. Big D and Gene recorded this episode live on Twitch. Of course, the Shat Crew debated the movie's biggest controversy: Did John Rambo kill Art Galt? But the conversation also took us to some unexpected places: Is this an accurate depiction of the veteran experience? What was with Rambo's POW mustache? Is Col. Sam Trautman a hero or a monster? And is the Yamaha XT250 the coolest dual sport motorcycle ever built? Thanks to some very generous Shat listeners, this recording raised $1000 for the shooting response fund. In this special live episode, the Shat Crew celebrates the 1989 love letter to Highland Park and Chicagoland as a whole: "Uncle Buck." One of John Hughes' lesser-known films, this John Candy comedy gave us Macaulay Culkin before his breakthrough role in "Home Alone." It also touched Big D's heart as a father and sexually confused a young Gene Lyons. As always, we dive into unexpected topics like fat shaming, menacing comedians, '80s montages, and missed opportunities with clowns. Ep 300Ghostbusters II (1989)

We made it to Episode 300! This "Ghostbusters II" review has it all: Ash learns about New Coke; Gene learns he might not like young Bill Murray; Big D teaches us all about "Tears in Heaven;" and a plot summary is so ridiculous we can't stop laughing. In our second discussion of the Ghostbusters franchise, the Shat Crew examines birthday packages, debates the quality of Vigo's painting, contrasts movie montages, dives deeper into the new Ghostbusters logo, weighs when it's OK to clean your host's apartment, discovers someone's been throwing out her partner's belongings and outlines the appropriate use of children in comedies. Ep 299Manhunter (1986)

E

Shat The Movies has covered "The Silence of The Lambs," but that wasn't enough for film elitists who scoff at the mainstream appeal of Sir Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecktor and Jodi Foster's Clarice Starling. They insisted we review the movie that started it all: "Manhunter." It was hard to validate this movie without comparing it to everything that came after: Buffalo Bill dancing to "Goodbye Horses," Mads Mikkelsen bringing sex appeal to the series or Frederick Chilton getting some flesh to his character. But that's OK, because those comparisons revealed some of "Manhunter's" subtle strengths. In this episode, Gene admits he doesn't understand some of Michael Mann's artsy decisions; Big D illuminates some of the guerilla filmmaking that went into "Manhunter;" and Ash gets pissed on behalf of murder victims' families. The Shat Crew also discusses Brian Cox's version of Hannibal, chuckles at William Petersen's spirited self-talk and explores whether a little romance can help elevate an '80s thriller. Ep 298Dark City (1998)

E

Big D returns from a booze cruise just in time to tackle a 1998 sci-fi sleeper that explores the nature of individuality, the impact of memories and the allure of Jennifer Connelly's mustache. Pack your bags for "Dark City!" In this episode, Gene laments the movie's opening spoiler, and Ash ties together the look and feel of pretty much every '90s goth-industrial-hacker-vampire film while drooling over Rufus Sewell. Meanwhile, Big D takes a shot at Kiefer Sutherland, and everyone agrees "Dark City" has some badass set design. Is there a difference between time travel and the mastery of telekinesis? Are Riff Raff and Mr. Hand the same person? Why wasn't this movie 10 minutes long? We raise these questions and more on behalf of longtime listener and author Ryan C. Ep 297Reservoir Dogs (1992)

E

"Reservoir Dogs" isn't the kind of movie a rookie podcaster should touch. It's an icon of the '90s, the debut of a game-changing director, perhaps even the birth of a new genre. So we waited, and we learned, and we put nearly 300 movies in the toilet before accepting the challenge laid out by listener Jody G: Question whether the 1992 heist flick holds up after 30 years. Anyone who's seen "Reservoir Dogs" remembers the nonlinear storytelling, the violence, the snappy dialogue, and the shots that would end up as T-shirts, coffee mugs, car decals. But you almost never hear movie fans talking about Tim Roth's horrible accent, the long run time or the logical flaws. In this episode, the Shat Crew discusses how Mr. Blonde inspires Gene to be better in the office, why Big D loves the "Reservoir Dogs" soundtrack, and how Quentin Tarantino saved money while blowing Ash's mind.
