If you made a mashup of Shat The Movies films, "The Blood of Heroes" might be the result. It has a dose of "Mad Max," a pinch of "Blade Runner," two tablespoons of "Robot Jox" and just a hint of "The Sandlot." Definitely an acquired taste. More than 50 years ago, a Francis Ford Coppola epic changed the way America viewed organized crime and set a new standard for storytelling. This is "The Godfather." And who better to commission this film about family than an Italian-American listener from New Jersey with fond memories of sharing mob movies with his dad? This 1992 thriller doesn't have flashy graphics, funky fashions or a techno soundtrack—but it does have Ben Kingsley, Sidney Poitier, Dan Aykroyd and Robert Redford. In loafers. With its playful tone, low barrier to entry and established cast, this gateway thriller appeals to the familiar to explain the cutting-edge. And Big D likes that. "Sneakers" also has unexpected jokes, serious schemes and nostalgic tech. And Gene Lyons likes that. But the movie isn't perfect. Among its flaws are a cavalier treatment of a superweapon, potential abuse of a blind character, unimaginative demands and a smidge too much predictability. We know what you're thinking: "How did it take you 348 episodes to get to Police Academy?" The truth is we just needed one brave citizen to step up against that crime and commission this 1984 comedy giant. Shat The Movie legend Adam R. answered the call. With the six film sequels and the animated series that followed this movie," it's easy to assume the original "Police Academy" stands strong on its own. Steve Guttenberg is at his hunky Jew best. Kim Cattrall brings some spice to the mix. And G.W. Bailey is hilariously hateable as Lt. Thaddeus Harris. But this movie has some problems. The Motormouth joke gets old pretty fast. The cadet roster is unnecessarily overloaded. Many of the jokes are tired and predictable. And Big D really didn't care for the ending. What surprised us most in this 2023 viewing was how progressive "Police Academy" was, how anti-establishment it was for a police movie and how many boobs came out at the bonfire party. Remember when we covered "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation" and wondered why Christopher Lambert had be replaced as Raiden? This week, we got our answer: Shat The Movies' favorite Frenchman was busy filming "Beowulf." On paper, this 1999 sci-fi adaptation of the Old English epic poem sounds like a disaster. In fact, movie commissioner Emmet in Orange had never even seen "Beowulf" when he requested a review. Filmed on a $3 million budget, this Mortal Kombat-style action-adventure is loaded with anachronistic dialogue, comically odd weapons, overcomplicated gadgets, incredible cleavage and combat that mostly consists of doing flips. This movie's plot armor makes "Game of Thrones" Season 8 seem reasonable. The soundtrack and bring-your-own-costume style feel like we've slipped into a 1990s Romanian rave, and watching poor Rhona Mitra seduce Christopher Lambert hurt our souls. We can thank Kevin Costner's "Dances With Wolves" for reinvigorating Westerns for the '90s, leading to other Shat movies like "Tombstone" and "Unforgiven." Until we watched "Near Dark," the Shat Crew was blissfully unaware that vampires' true supernatural power wasn't immortality: It was prudent decision-making and wise investments. "Shat The Movies" has seen its share of literary adaptations but never one that inspired Big D to draw, Gene to regain his teen mojo and Ash to besmirch the good name of coastal Florida. It's Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations!" When listener Ryley moved out of her parents' house for the first time and needed a comfort movie, "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation" was there. We humbly offer this Shat The Movies review to the elder gods in hopes we all someday discover our inner animalities. From terrible CGI to imbalanced audio, this sequel to 1995's "Mortal Kombat" proved you can't just swap out the cast, throw in a whole bunch of new characters, rip off Sub-Zero's mask and expect video game fans to accept it. You also can't make Raiden mumble mumbo jumbo while dressed as a suburban dad or kill off Johnny Cage in the first five minutes without clarifying he's actually dead. Even Mortal Kombat's legendary soundtrack sagged under the weight of Jax's "urban" dialog and Barraka's rubber blades. And just when we thought we'd seen the worst, the dragon fight everyone had forgotten became the final battle nobody could unsee.
