Ep 265Stargate (1994)
EIs "Stargate" as good as "Star Wars?" Maybe not. Is it every bit as fun? Possibly! Roland Emmerich's 1994 ode to Ancient Egypt boasts a surprisingly kickass musical score, some super creative costuming, and possibly the secrets to where Saddam Hussein hid his yellow cake. But it isn't without its problems. Your main villain, Ra, is utterly impractical with his security forces (what's with those helmets?), spacecraft (who flies a pyramid?), and body choice (may we suggest being Rodrigo Santoro next time?). Your heroes, despite being a hot James Spader and steely Kurt Russell, are hamstrung by terrible tactics (camping out in the open), a useless team (who cast French Stewart as a commando?), and little balls on their berets. And your main attraction, the titular Stargate, is a giant combination lock that ripped off "The Abyss" and defies any semblance of science. But none of that matters because this was the movie we all needed in 1994: fast-moving with a little action, a little romance, and a lot of half-naked children. In this episode of "Shat The Movies," we learn Big D didn't pluck his wife from the jungle, teachers are nerds, and why you should always "sleep with the gift." Ep 26412 Monkeys (1995)
E"12 Monkeys" has something for every member of the Shat Crew: An edgy, smart director for Ash, time travel for Dick Ebert, and loads of man butts for Gene. But is it the slick, mind-blowing film we remember from 1995, or does it fall flat in a post-pandemic America? As the Month of Steve continues, we dig into some tinfoil territory, questioning the nature of reality, whether the powers that be would ruin the world to stay in control, and whether Brad Pitt really deserved that Golden Globe. Is Dr. Reilly one of the worst sidekicks in movie history? Is the "12 Monkeys" score one of the most underappreciated compositions of the '90s? We answer these questions and more in this weeks Shat The Movies. Ep 263Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993)
EThe last time Shat The Movies took on a Mel Brooks movie, Big D spoiled Roger's and Gene's fun with a grumpy wipe score. Will "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" be a parody redemption, or will Dick Ebert's "Spaceballs" gloom spread to the rest of the Shat Crew? In this episode, commissioned by Hot Sauce Steve, we discuss who Mel Brooks jokes are for, the eternal hotness of Cary Elwes, why amazing songs make comedies even better, how many callbacks is too many callbacks, a young Dave Chappelle, a spicy Amy Yasbeck, an incredible Dom DeLuise, and what happened to the "Robin Hood" writing team after "Men in Tights." Ep 262It (1990)
EShat The Movies is no stranger to Stephen King movies, but we've never done a miniseries before. "It" taught us there's nothing more shat-tastic than mixing television icons like John Ritter, Harry Anderson, Richard Thomas, and Tim Reid with the horrifically bad TV production value of the '90s. But Hot Sauce Steve's commission wasn't all laughs. There were real scares: Parents not seeing the terrors unleashed upon the children of Derry; Tim Curry's unforgettable portrayal of Pennywise the clown; and of course late '80s home decor. In this episode, the Shat Crew discuss whether Bill Skarsgard's 2017 Pennywise was better, whether the golden age of communal TV viewing is over, if racial slurs are OK on network broadcasts, and what qualifies as a fat kid. Ep 261Alien (1979)
EMany '80s babies first met xenomorphs in 1986's "Aliens," but there just something special about the 1979 Ridley Scott masterpiece that started it all. It's more suspenseful, more thought-provoking, more groundbreaking. That doesn't mean we can't laugh at it. Face it: Mother is just a room of blinky lights, the ovamorphs look like lady parts, the crew of the Nostromo is hilarously reckless, and the chest-burster kinda resembles a demented Muppet. Kicking off Hot Sauce Steve's 5 weeks of Shat The Movies commissions, "Alien" inspires the Shat Crew to discuss Disneyworld's Great Movie Ride, Ripley's choice in underwear, why dogs are better that cats in space, and sexy milk people. Ep 260The Naked Gun (1988)
EWith a joke every 10 seconds, "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!" is considered by many the Gold Standard when it comes to '80s comedies. The gags are nonstop and forever burned into our brains, but is this 30-year-old movie based on a single-season TV show still funny? That depends on whether you like jokes about loud urination, tigers mauling baseball players, ballistic missiles driving into fireworks shops, and full-body condoms. We do. Other topics in this episode of Shat The Movies include the carefree vibe of the '80s, anti-montage parody montages, Ricardo Montelban's cool, Priscilla Presley's performance, what it means to let a joke breathe, and O.J. Simpson: hot or not? Ep 259An American Werewolf in London (1981)
EIt's another Shat The Movies horror-comedy, but this time we have an '80s classic. Longtime listener Rob T. reached out from across the pod to commission the 1981 John Landis masterpiece, "An American Werewolf in London." Big D's the star this week as we get more Ebert Animal Tips for Safety, hear why he thinks the British make the best horror movie victims, marvel at what it takes to convince Dick a film is a comedy, and learn how to use apartment tours to woo women. In this episode, we also cheer the practical effects (that transformation scene ... woof), wish for a Naughty Nina spinoff, discover what Bob Dylan and Michael Jackson have in common, and uncover the secret messages about Jewish life in an Anglo world. Plus, Gene and Ash conspire to leave their giant co-host behind in the event of a wolf attack. Ep 258Masters of the Universe (1987)
ESome commissioners present Shat The Movies with films they admire, hoping for low wipe scores and eternal glory in the Pantheon of Shat. Others serve us straight from toilet, understanding their favorite films are turds and deserve a whole roll of TP. Listener Will C. is the latter. We're kicking off 2022 with "Masters of the Universe," a movie that makes "Star Wars" look like irrefutable science and makes "Conan the Barbarian" feel Oscar-worthy. This one's a real battle between our love of campy schlock and the hard truth that big budgets don't always mean good cinema. Was the Sorceress perfection or pointless? Should the movie have focused on Earth or Eternia? Was Dolph Lundgren a god or a goober? Is this Courteney Cox in her prime, and how do you pronounce Frank Langella? The Shat Crew debates all this and more while agreeing on one thing: Fuck Gwildor. Ep 257Ravenous (1999)
EJust as fans feared (or cheered) Shat The Movies slipping into a pattern of covering '90s blockbuster films, listener Ben in Japan commissioned "Ravenous" to close out the 2021 Shat calendar. This cannibal Western horror comedy set during the Mexican-American War is about as quirky as cinema gets: a soundtrack by Damon Albarn of Blur, a cartoonish mass murderer, gross-out humor mixed with slapstick giggles. But a killer cast including Guy Pearce, Robert Carlyle, David Arquette, Jeffrey Jones, Jeremy Davies, and Neal McDonough keeps "Ravenous" oddly accessible and strangely fun. In this episode, the Shat Crew discusses the sounds of bagels and blowjobs, gross goatees, flashbacks that lack mystery, the danger of knives, the incredibly opportunity of being a wendigo in the Old West, and whether "Ravenous" is actually an allegory for repressed homosexuality. Ep 256In The Army Now (1994)
EWe dedicate this Shat The Movies episode to those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces and the people who love them. Oh, and Pauly Shore fans who feel horribly underserved by our existing catalog. You might think "In The Army Now" offends veterans of the Army and Army Reserve. It's irreverent, inaccurate, and inappropriate. But at least one Shat warfighter, The Colonel, finds it surprisingly ingenious. Among the cheap gags, inexplicable plot holes, and strange takes on sexuality is a movie showcasing a young Andy Dick, a sorta hot (according to Ash) Pauly Shore, and a pre-"Tank Girl" Lori Petty. There are some smarts, like an "Of Mice and Men" allusion, and some flat-out funny scenes, like a hilarious attack on a Libyan SCUD site. How will the Shat Crew ultimately rule on this movie? The results surprised Gene Lyons. In this podcast, you'll also hear about Big D's experiences in Basic Training, Gene's regrets about not serving, and Ash's queries about the military's water filtration needs. We also cover Dear John letters, Defense Directive 1304.26, and what it means to be "barracks hot." Ep 255Titanic (1997)
EPodcast releases don't get any bigger than this: A heroic band of listeners pulled together a special commission marking the massive milestone of 3 million Shat The Movies downloads on the 24th anniversary of the most epic film to hit theaters: "Titanic." There's no denying James Cameron's grand vision of capturing the Titanic's disastrous maiden voyage through a love story was a huge risk with a huge budget that broke box office records. But is it just a ghost ship with fond memories, or does Titanic's heart still go on? Ash is moved to tears. Big D spins up a theory on why Jack's responsible for the entire wreck. And Gene's love life gets supercharged by all the feels. This episode also includes Gene's story of why he guarded "Titanic" more closely than his virginity, Big D's moist recollection of the naked sketch scene, and Ash's celebration of Kate Winslet's beauty, despite Hollywood thinking the leading lady was overweight. Listen in for all this, plus the greatest Shat musical voicemail we've ever received. You all make us feel like the king of the world. Ep 254Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993)
EEveryone knows about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it's time we gave the DC Animated Universe some love. "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm" marked the first time DC put an animated feature into theaters, and it changed the way we'd see Batman on screen for years to come. This 1993 release was loosely based on the graphic novel "Batman: Year One" and trade paperback "Batman: Year Two," so it had Gene's attention. And Big D watched a lot of "The Animated Series" while stoned in college. Needless to say, the Shat Crew was excited to visit a Gotham City envisioned by Bruce Timm and voiced by Mark Hamill, Kevin Conroy, Dana Delany, Stacy Keach, and Abe Vigoda. In this episode, Gene and Big D cover lawn sex, Batman's detective roots, what a weak villain The Phantasm was, a weird romance, bad boy billionaires, the real motivation behind Bruce Wayne dressing as Batman, Alfred's horrid lot in life, the secret intelligence behind the Batcomputer, and flashbacks ... so many flashbacks. Ep 253Father of the Bride (1991)
EBig D gets all the goosies while Gene and Ash beg fathers to see their daughters as adults in this review of Steve Martin's 1991 comedy "Father of the Bride." Along the way, the Shat Crew discusses wedding costs, Martin Short, Subaru commercials, jewelry boxes, Keurig vs. Nespresso, paying attention to lyrics, Brazilian swimwear, the need for post-wedding brunch, and Diane Keaton. Do you need to meet the parents before popping the question? Should you sell tickets to your wedding? When is it time for a father to let go? We tackle these questions and more in this week's episode that strangely ends in a discussion of "Top Gun: Maverick." Ep 252Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999)
EIs everyone fair game when it comes to comedy? What if the person lampooning an oppressed group is a member of that group? Does it change if it's a mockumentary? Listener Justin M. knew he was stirring up trouble when he commissioned 1999's "Drop Dead Gorgeous," a movie that looked at "Clueless" and said, "Hold my beer." Kirsten Dunst, Brittany Murphy, Denise Richards, Amy Adams, and Kirstie Alley had Ash and Big in tears with laughter. But Gene was just sad watching the film mock the poor, small-town folk, young women, the intellectually disabled, and people with eating disorders. In the debate, the Shat Crew also discussed gun culture, gross-out humor, and the original ending of "Drop Dead Gorgeous," which was much, much darker. Ep 251A League of Their Own (1992)
EWhen a longtime listener requests a movie review for her 16th birthday, Shat delivers. This week's commission is the 1992 baseball classic "A League of Their Own." And while it shines as a comedy featuring some of the '90s hottest names and future stars, there's a little dust on this old reel. The sibling rivalry is a little overblown. The social commentary is a little dated. And the real women behind the tale are overshadowed by some seriously silly storylines. But that doesn't stop Penny Marshall's $100 million hit from being funny, fun, and absolutely memorable. Reel Spoilers podcast's Kevin R. Brackett joins the Shat Crew this week to talk about our first cars, "A League of Their Own" the TV series, the debutante system, a loss of manners, prison-yard rules, baseball safety, and whether Dottie threw the World Series. We also test out movie concepts starring Ash, including a post-apocalyptic Little League drama, and debate whether Bill Pullman's character, Bob, was a war hero or just lame. Ep 250Dutch (1991)
EThanksgiving movies are difficult to find, and quality Thanksgiving movies are even more elusive. Thankfully, listener Adam R. gifted us with the underrated 1991 road trip comedy "Dutch," an experience that revealed just how different your Shat hosts are in their approaches to children. Gene argues sometimes a kid needs to get punched in the mouth. Ash believes there no reason to hit your offspring, and Big D encourages tough love but draws the line at his mother's rug beater. Along the way, the Shat Crew cheers Christopher MacDonald, appreciates Ethan Embry, and questions whether "Dutch" is a great Ed O'Neill movie or just an OK John Hughes flick. We also discuss Gene's "horny shivers," Big D's teen virility, Christmas stress, how to help people in need, and Ash's first experience with porn. Ep 249The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994)
EIn honor of listener Stephanie Q's beloved cat, Priscilla, we review an Australian film that put drag queens on the global stage and opened the door for Ash to educate Gene and Big D on "reading," "spilling tea," and "fishy queens." "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" gave cinema a visual spectacle, a new perspective on homophobia, incredible costumes, and tremendous performances by Hugo Weaving, Terence Stamp, and Guy Pearce. But it also telegraphed its big reveal, marginalized characters based on race and sex, and fell a bit flat in its finale. In this episode of Shat The Movies, Ash provides a history of drag and feminism. Gene declares that anyone doing a drag show while their bus is broken in the Outback deserves to die. And Big D goes on a pro-ABBA rampage while insisting everyone respect Gene's vagina. Ep 248Bull Durham (1986)
EWith more than 240 movies under our belts, Shat The Movies finally feels qualified to review the greatest sports film of all time: "Bull Durham." A young Tim Robbins, a sexy Kevin Costner, and a ripe Susan Sarandon do the unthinkable in this '80s classic: They surface the joy, sensuality, intelligence, passion, drama, and hard truths about baseball, a sport that's drifted into some very dull times. In this episode, Big D tells us what he believes in. Ash tells us about trying out for Little League, and Gene finds a new role model in Crash Davis. The Shat Crew also recall our favorite minor-league baseball memories and find one tiny flaw in this otherwise perfect film. Ep 247Stand By Me (1986)
EBig D was so conflicted on his feelings toward "Stand By Me" that he took an extra 24 hours to process the Rob Reiner classic before delivering his verdict. It's not a fun movie, per se, but it generated some honest reflection from the Shat Crew. Gene was reminded of his childhood friendships, his relationship with The King Bee, and adventures along train tracks. Ash lamented Facebook's refusal to let high school acquaintances fade away, and Big D shared how seeing his first dead body changed his view on death. Also on this episode, the trio discuss whether parents have favorite children, whether Stephen King is a one-trick pony, how to remove leeches, and a theory on Ace Merrill being turned into David Powers from "The Lost Boys." And finally, Ash confronts Big D about rumors he wants her off the podcast. Ep 246The Monster Squad (1987)
EShat listeners were appalled when we gave "The Goonies" more than two wipes. When they hear our "The Monster Squad" score, they might just try casting us into a demon dimension. This '80s cult classic taught us what a pastiche was, illustrated how to explode a werewolf, and modeled perfect '80s parenting. We also enjoyed foul-mouthed kids, easy-to-remember character names, an outstanding montage, Dracula blowing up a treehouse with dynamite, and a corny thumbs-up that would make Van Damme blush. Thanks to listener Christian in Perth, Western Australia, for giving us one more monster movie to celebrate spooky season. Ep 245Goodfellas (1990)
E"Goodfellas" changed the game when it came to mob movies, taking us from the fantasy of mafia bosses to the much more mundane lives of foot soldiers. It showed how a man and a woman could be seduced by a criminal lifestyle. And it put Martin Scorsese's cinematic magic on full display. In this episode, the Shat Crew reveal their favorite scenes from the 1990 biopic and debate when exactly Henry Hill's life went from glamour to garbage. Also up for discussion are Robert De Niro's performance, when a rat isn't a rat, and whether the film's ending was rushed. And finally, we answer the question on everyone's mind: Is this movie better than "The Godfather: Part II?" Ep 244The Sure Thing (1985)
E"John Cusack is for the boys!" as Big D and Gene tackle one of Rob Reiner's lesser-known comedies: "The Sure Thing." You can imagine where the conversation goes as The Old Men of Shat cover an '80s flick that includes guaranteed hookups, dorm life, the perfect bar, missed sexual opportunities, performance anxiety, romance, and basic economics. Find out why Gene turned his living room into a drive-in theater and why Shat listeners as far as Australia tuned in to watch a 36-year-old movie through his iPhone. Then call in and let us know how much we suck without Ash. Ep 243Scream (1996)
EHalloween's coming a little early this year with a bonus Shat The Movies Spooktacular episode! "Scream" is arguably the biggest horror movie in the world, and it came at a time when slasher films were on life support. "Scream" fans Ash and Big D enthusiastically explain why the Wes Craven powerhouse is so iconic in its embrace and parody of the genre while "Scream" virgin Gene cheers the infectious invitation for audience participation. This is a movie for shatters! And while it nodded to the classics, this 1996 movie took some bold steps forward: a strong and smart Sidney, who Ash argues is the greatest Scream Queen of all; a new kind of killer for the next generation of horror fans; and a fresh set of rules for future flicks to honor. Enjoy the rawest audio we've ever released as the Shat Crew also covers the Richard Gere gerbil thing, the Underwear Rule, and whether Matthew Lillard deserves his spot among elite slasher personalities. Ep 242Rushmore (1998)
EEveryone's been waiting for Dick Ebert to review a Wes Anderson movie. Today is that day. Will Shat The Movies' everyman embrace the whimsy and sophistication of "Rushmore," or will our red-blooded podcast elder scoff at the pretentious eccentricity of a wannabe auteur? Calling Anderson the "Beck of directors," Big D questions whether he hates the "Rushmore" director or hates himself. Ash explains his distinct style of filming, and Gene argues that Jason Schwartzman's Max is a real dick. They all agree on one point: Bill Murray is absolutely wonderful in this movie. In this episode, the Shat Crew also share a vocabulary lesson, analyze Anderson's use of slow motion, listen while Gene does math, and debate whether Max's stage productions help or hurt the movie overall. Ep 241Risky Business (1983)
EEverybody knows the scene where Tom Cruise slides out in his tighty whiteys and lip-syncs Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock & Roll," but we often forget that 1983's "Risky Business" is so much more sophisticated than that. "Risky Business" is about money, growing up, acceptance, opportunity, materialism, friendship, love, and even nihilism. It treats sex workers and transgender people with respect. And it inspired a young Big D to explore his body for the first time. This one surfaces a lot of stories for a very drunk Shat Crew, including sexual exploits at Disney World, Gene's concert at his mom's house, and Big D's trip to Amsterdam. We also give advice on negotiating the price of services, the types of lovers to avoid, refractory periods, and the pressures of getting into college. Ep 240Little Giants (1994)
ESteven Spielberg famously decided to make "Little Giants" after seeing a McDonald's Super Bowl ad and exclaiming, "I want my 'Home Alone!'" He didn't quite get a blockbuster children's movie, but Spielberg might have been on to something. When you combine Rick Moranis, Ed O'Neill, and a bunch of misfit kids with football and fart jokes, parents can't help but feel squishy. But Gene Lyons isn't a parent. He also isn't a moviegoer who will tolerate easy stereotypes, inorganic relationships, dumb training montages, or sports movies with trick plays. Who will win the day in this review? Will it be Ash with her cutthroat views on child performance? Will it be Big D with his football history? Or will it be Gene hatred of storied sports franchises? It's a gridiron clash here at Shat The Movies! Ep 239Kids (1995)
EWith her third "Shat The Movies" commission, listener Lisa triggered some really dark memories and icky feelings from Ash, Big D, and Gene. To say reviewing Larry Clark's "Kids" was difficult would be an understatement. But we're glad we did because watching this landmark independent film reminded us it's just as disturbing now as it was in 1995. Chloe Sevigny, Rosario Dawson, and Leo Fitzpatrick turned our guts inside-out in their film debuts. But did Harmony Korine write the story he'd been waiting to tell all his life, or is this just a movie meant to scare suburban moms? In this episode, we discuss rolling blunts, which drugs can actually ruin your life, the '90s HIV scare, how kids actually talk, why we were pulling for Casper, and whether teen girls are victims or young adults exercising their agency. Ep 238Brewster's Millions (1985)
EListener Teddy N. noticed a Richard Pryor-shaped hole in the Shat The Movies library and decided to plug it with an underappreciated classic: "Brewster's Millions." In this episode, we remember a comedic genius in his prime with a knockout supporting cast. We also find out why Big D hates the Mets, who would play a $30 million Shat on Music Festival, and which Mortal Kombat movie is superior. Along the way, we also quote Mase, celebrate a spicy John Candy, feed Big D all the rules he can stomach, hear voicemail from Hot Sauce Steve and Don Sauce, and read an "Interview with the Vampire" letter that touched our eternally damned souls. Ep 237Rudy (1993)
EWhen people think of inspirational '90s football movies, one sticks out like a very short thumb. That's why inaugural Shat on Fantasy Football League winner Stephen "Happy Harry" Jenkins decided to commission the 1993 Sean Astin hit "Rudy." Have the years made us too cynical to appreciate the story of an underdog whose greatest achievement was simply getting on the field, or can the Jerry Goldsmith score and a few outstanding performances still tug at our heartstrings? Gene questions the casting of a creepy Jon Favreau and the decision to fast forward through Rudy's Vietnam years. Ash reveals how to decode the movie using hairstyles, and guest host Kevin Brackett points out the parallels with 1994's "Forrest Gump." The Shat Crew also discusses Astin's Samwise typecast, explosive foreshadowing, the misery of Notre Dame, and how close this sweet drama is to being a terrifying stalker film. Ep 236The Usual Suspects (1995)
EThe winner of the first Shat The Movies Fantasy Premier League season, listener Nick Cobs, chose as his prize one of the biggest "holy crap!" plot twists of the '90s: "The Usual Suspects." We all remember the iconic line-up scene and utterly addictive performances by Benicio del Toro, Kevin Spacey, Chazz Palminteri, and Stephen Baldwin (no, not you Gabriel Byrne). But will the Shat Crew hail Bryan Singer's breakthrough neo-noir flick as a smart, stylish ensemble mystery or dismiss it as the Fedora Guy of movies? Join us as we take another look at the crappy wig, silly heist, gratuitous vengeance, horrible police sketch, and questionable narrators that make "The Usual Suspects" worthy of the Shat treatment. Ep 235Interview with the Vampire (1994)
EIn each of our lives, there's a singular moment when you know you've got one shot to get it right: a wedding vow, a eulogy, naming your first born. For Ash and Gene, this is that moment. "Interview with the Vampire" was the film that birthed them into the Darkness, a love letter to their sacred New Orleans, and the key to their portals of lust. But fear not, mortals, Big D is here to guide you through the catacombs of this 1994 gothic horror classic, keeping the podcast grounded lest we sink into Death and never surface. Is "Interview with the Vampire" timeless and immortal in its perfection, or have the years left it disconnected from a confusingly modern world? Is Tom Cruise truly Lestat de Lioncourt or just a silly little man in a bad wig? And most importantly: Is Louis de Pointe du Lac a "bitch role," or is Brad Pitt the most gorgeously brooding creature on Earth? To explore these questions, you won't need a crucifix (we're particularly fond of looking at them), just a strong stomach, an even stronger will, and contraceptives to protect yourself from the flood of infernal sex magic coming your way. Ep 234One Crazy Summer (1986)
ESelf-proclaimed John Cusack lovers Ash and Gene were shocked when listener Scott H. commissioned "One Crazy Summer." A Cusack and Savage Steve Holland team-up we'd never seen? Yes, please! But Big D knew exactly what we were in for: 1986 was his year to shine, a year when everything was coming up Ebert, and this movie took him right back to those magical days. In this episode of Shat The Movies, we get into the director's gratuitous use of animation, how hard it is for a kid to make $3,000, a debate on Bobcat Goldthwait, the difference between love and being wanted by women, and Demi Moore's singing career. Big D points out the glaring similarities between "One Crazy Summer" and "Better Off Dead." Gene questions whether the movie is secretly linked to Tori Amos. And we all shrug at logic being thrown out the window. Ep 233National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)
EListener Tom in Crane, Texas, had one wish this summer: Give "National Lampoon's Vacation" the Shat treatment. Shat Nation heard the call and crowdfunded this 1983 road trip classic that reminded us of traveling with our families, the first time Big D saw boobs, singing in the car, and American icon Cousin Eddie. "Vacation" is full of twists, turns, and clever vignettes that inspired the Shat Crew to discuss a wide range of topics, including Dutch Bros. Coffee, how to treat servers, over-planning, desert survival, crappy funerals, and why Clark Griswold is the worst movie dad. Big D gets wine drunk on "grinot pigio." Ash defends Walter White, and we all agree that Beverly D'Angelo is an absolute MILF. Ep 232Of Mice and Men (1992)
EIt was only a matter of time before Shat The Movies was asked to provide serious commentary on a film adaptation of a John Steinbeck classic. Thanks to brothers Adam R. and Josh R., we're pitting "Of Mice and Men" against "Interview with the Vampire" in the first Shat on Literature challenge. This week, we question the wisdom of casting John Malkovich as an intellectually disabled giant, how much force it would take to crush a hand, and why commentary on racism was largely removed in the translation from book to film. Big D confesses he would not be able to resist a hottie in the barn. Gene drools over the misery of tragic foreshadowing, and Ash puts her professor skills on full display. Other topics include the artsy pigeon, Ray Walston's missing hand, and how having a budget sometimes hurts a piece of art. Parody Song FiverrTrying to make a silly video? Ep 231Hook (1991)
EWhen Steven Spielberg calls, you take the job. That explains the unbelievable cast of 1991's "Hook" and its $300 million box office take. But updating the tale of Peter Pan takes some serious thinking. Now that he's grown up, do you emphasize the nihilism and domestic horror? Or is this a silly kids movie? In this episode, Ash explains the literary themes that somehow got lost along the way. Gene posits that Dustin Hoffman is the greatest comedic pirate of all time (yes, even better than Johnny Depp), and Big D makes the case for having children. The Shat Crew also discusses Thudballing, Maggie Smith's reverse aging, Peter's womanizing, Tootles' doomed future, and how the movie did Rufio wrong. Ep 230The Fugitive (1993)
EMost Shat The Movies features can be summed up as "great ideas gone wrong," but what about a terrible idea gone right? On paper, 1993's "The Fugitive" sounds ridiculous: A vascular surgeon is sentenced to death but escapes to find his wife's one-armed killer while diving, punching, and spying his way to freedom. But sometimes charm, practical effects, a clever script, and non-stop thrills come together to make movie magic. This episode, the Shat Crew had to ask itself, "Were Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones really that good? Was the dam scene that exciting? Was Julianne Moore really in this movie?" Or were we all fooled by childhood excitement and nostalgia? Big D explores justice versus vengeance. Ash recalls the psychological scars left by the opening murder. And Gene once again asks why the movie's smart guy isn't smarter. Ep 229Red Dawn (1984)
ENo '80s movie library would be complete without "Red Dawn," the surprisingly violent movie that pitted American high school kids against a communist invasion, debuted the PG-13 rating, and turned Shat The Movies into a warzone. While Ash and Gene blast the laughably serious performances and meandering plot, Big D valiantly mounts a counterassault based mostly on Cold War hysteria and a cast that includes Patrick Swayze, Charlie Sheen, Jennifer Grey, Lea Thompson, Harry Dean Stanton, Powers Boothe (minus the mustache), C. Thomas Howell, and Ron O'Neal. Along the way, the Shat Crew battles over child abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and audience abuse. They also discuss re-education camp security, a deleted "love scene," mystery supplies, and whether "Red Dawn" was a call to arms or an anti-war movie disguised so well as a pro-war movie that it just made American kids want to go to war. Stay tuned for the wipe scores at the end. Things get bloody. Ep 228Robot Jox (1990)
EFew sci-fi movies are so shat-tacular that people accuse them of sinking the studios that made them, but "Robot Jox" isn't your average movie. Described by it's co-writer as, "a child who started out well and then sustained brain damage," this 1990 cult classic nevertheless won the hearts of a few rabid fans, including Shat The Movies mega-donor Jon M. If you like towering mechs doing battle, "Robot Jox" got it. If you like post-apocalyptic worlds, this is the movie for you. Odd wardrobe choices? You bet. Faithful adaptations of Greek epics? Might wanna check with Ash on that one. From chauvinism to chainsaw wieners to referees who make FIFA look fair, "Robot Jox" really has something for everyone. Plus you get to see the worst use of a stunt double in any major motion picture. Crash and burn! Ep 227If Looks Could Kill (1991)
EI've you've ever wondered why Richard Grieco never made it on the big screen, this 1991 box office flop might be to blame. But was "If Looks Could Kill" really all that bad? The supporting cast is fantastic, the parody of James Bond films is a lot of fun, the sex appeal is there, and the memorable one-liners keep you smiling. But this movie is far from perfect. Grieco's face looks rubbery, he's in his mid-20s, and the plot really doesn't make sense. Who sends their kid to France for failing French? Hear why Ash thinks Tom Cruise is the last true action star, why Gene shaved his arms, and why Big D made a trip to the public library in this edition of "Shat The Movies." Ep 226The Seventh Sign (1988)
EShat The Movies super-supporter Emmett is back with a rare genre of film: apocalyptic religious horror pregnancy porn. "The Seventh Sign" features a young Demi Moore playing the most active mom-to-be in cinematic history, Jurgen Prochnow from "Das Boot" playing (spoiler alert) Jesus, and Michael Biehn from "The Terminator," "Aliens," and "Tombstone" once again refused the hero's role. Big D takes a crash course in Biblical interpretation. Gene begs for a remake. And Ash cringes at the Hall of Souls. Along the way, we also discuss hot fish, why movie doctors don't try very hard, how easy it is to infiltrate an execution, renting rooms to strangers, and how tough the Seven Seals of God should be. Ep 225Platoon (1986)
EOliver Stone gave the '80s and '90s some of their greatest films, so it's about time Shat The Movie dove into his catalog. And what better introductory film than "Platoon," a movie that combined Stone's artistry and military experience in a brilliant reflection on the Vietnam War. In this episode, Big D and Ash review the movie and the war through personal tales and family history. Gene digs into the social and racial aspects of the conflict, and the Shat Crew celebrates a knockout cast at its best. Other topics include the definition of masculinity, how to tell combat veterans from glory thieves, and why "Forrest Gump" is overrated. Ep 224The Great Outdoors (1988)
ESummer vacations, cabin trips, lakeside living, nature walks, and spending time with family are enough to make the most cynical Shat The Movies listener nostalgic. On this Fathers Day recording, we visit John Candy's "The Great Outdoors," a classic '80s comedy that holds a dear place in many a heart. Brothers Adam, Josh, and John R. commissioned "The Great Outdoors" in honor of their late father and the childhood memories they built with him. Big D related to being a dad. Ash contrasted the idyllic mood of the movie with her own childhood vacations. And Gene was taken back to his summer fantasies of meeting a mean girl in a denim jacket. Of course, the Shat Crew also covers The 96er, the endless animal gags, Dan Aykroyd's oddly enjoyable performance, and bear dumps. But the real meat of this movie is laughing at jokes and situations that work BECAUSE we've seen them—and lived them— so many times. Ep 223Back to the Future Part III (1990)
E"Back to the Future Part III" is a master class in how to make a time-travel comedy. It's a love letter to Old Hollywood Westerns. And it's the final note in a legendary trilogy. Guest host Kevin Brackett (Reel Spoilers podcast) joins Ash and Gene this week to discuss the countless callbacks, outstanding action, and brilliant performances that elevated what some consider the weakest of the Back to the Future series. We get into Christopher Lloyd's puppy-dog brown eyes, the Back to the Future theme park ride, elaborate dioramas, the movie's "Gilligan's Island" tendencies, Gene's Two-DeLorean Conundrum, and a hotly debated ending that involves a small child pointing at his genitals. Ep 222Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man (1991)
EBefore Tom Sizemore and Mickey Rourke made flops of their careers, they starred in one of the most epic box office failures of the '90s: "Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man." Was the world just not ready for an action comedy that played out like a comic book, or is this movie truly rushed and sloppy? The Shat Crew was fully divided on this forgotten film, but not in the ways you might expect. A few things we did agree on: Don Johnson is a charming S.O.B., Harley-Davidsons are garbage motorcycles, Daniel Baldwin was cheated by the gene pool, and sometimes you need to just let a movie end. Listener Lachlan H. commissioned this cinematic collection of life advice from all the way down in Australia, reminding us "it's better to be dead and cool than alive and uncool." Ep 221Student Bodies (1981)
EBefore there was "Scream" or "Scary Movie, a little movie called "Student Bodies" pioneered the slasher-film spoof. But was it too far ahead of its time, with too few movies to parody? In Dick Ebert's estimation, "two out of eight jokes" are funny in this 1981 trailblazer that made him laugh as a boy. Gene and Ash think that's generous as the Shat Crew discusses The Breather, jokes about the differently abled, and the magic of Malvert. Film commissioner Dan in Park Ridge, IL, makes Shat history with this episode, and we discover the racially charged background of the eggplant. Ep 220Internal Affairs (1990)
EMost '80s and '90s cop movies are cheesy, unfunny, offensive, unintelligent, or a combination of the four. But 1990's "Internal Affairs" joins "L.A. Confidential" as a rare police drama that delivers on quality and thrills. Sporting the worst haircuts of their careers, Andy Garcia and Richard Gere spent two hours trading lethal glares, filthy innuendo, mind games, and silky fabrics. Of course, "Internal Affairs" had the typical '90s slow-mo shots and hideous sets, but all that was balanced by a buffet of beautiful butts and some forward-thinking filmmaking. Care to guess the wipe score before listening? We think you'll be surprised. Ep 219Johnny Dangerously (1984)
EAn '80s movie doesn't have to be the funniest, the most dramatic, or the most action-packed film we've ever seen to be important. It doesn't even need to be popular. Sometimes, a movie just needs to bring families together, give us a few chuckles, and bridge the gap between the young mind of a child and the memories of a parent. "Johnny Dangerously" isn't Michael Keaton's best-known film. And it isn't the pinnacle of Amy Heckerling's skills as a director. But it's definitely worth watching. In the edition, the Shat Crew discusses premarital sex, running gags, eyeliner, John Stamos versus Christian Slater, "Gung Ho" versus "Mr. Mom," and whether crime actually pays. Ep 218The Color of Money (1986)
ESome say Paul Newman is the greatest actor of all time. Some say Martin Scorsese is the greatest director of all time. And some say "The Color of Money" is his greatest film. We are not those people. But the Shat Crew is mature enough to appreciate a film with sets you can smell, jaw-dropping performances, and the magic of a young Tom Cruise. In this edition, we discuss how "The Color of Money" influenced other gambling movies ("Rounders," anyone?) and brought out Dick Ebert's inner detective. Ash explores the art of the hustle, and Gene defines the line between games and sports. Throw in one of the '80s weirdest montages, an unexpected ending, and the ultimate question of money versus pride, and you'll see why this Academy Award-winning film can be both outstanding and outdated. Ep 217Back to The Beach (1987)
EBust out your surfboards and Stunned Mullets, we're going "Back to The Beach" with Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello! This 1987 parody of '60s movies packed in appearances from OJ Simpson, PeeWee Herman, the casts of "Leave It to Beaver" and "Gilligan's Island," Dick Dale, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and the "two dollars" kid from "Better Off Dead." This edition of Shat The Movies explores the importance of following through on threats, deal breakers in dating, Big D's mall walking, and East Coast vs West Coast beaches. Ash and Big D crush Gene's ideas on parenthood while revealing a fear of losing their identities as they age. Dick body-shames beachgoers and Gene explains why you should seek a partner you fear. Note: Gene survived a car accident 30 minutes before recording this podcast, then proceeded to down a double whiskey.
