Ep 147Ronin (1998)

E

Do you remember your first DVD? "Shat The Movies" listener Ken C. does. And he forked out the dollars to share it with you. "Ronin" was a throwback movie even on the day it was released, feeling more like 1968 than 1998. It was prime Robert De Niro before he started his string of comedies, and it was legendary director John Frankenheimer's final picture, an ode to all his car-chase spectaculars that came before. Reverence for a bygone era aside, the Shat Crew couldn't help but notice some bumps in the picturesque French roads of "Ronin." Abundant MacGyver tricks, rampant Michael Bayisms, questionable Irish accents, Teflon bullets, and dad-fashion euro dudes. If ever Dick Ebert sparkled on the "Shat The Movies" review, "Ronin" was it. Big D shares Army stories, breaks down the epic ambush scene, mourns Princess Di, and cringes at French police cars too small to fit his 6'7" frame. Here's to a movie that threw CGI aside, illustrated the beauty of France, and said farewell to one of the greatest car-chase directors of all time. Enjoy. Ep 146Over the Top (1987)

E

Leave it to an Aussie living in Canada to commission the most anti-intellectual American truckerfest we've ever covered on "Shat The Movies." Listener Fabian threw in his hard-earned green stamps to request "Over The Top," Sylvester Stallone's 1987 attempt to recapture the magic of "Rocky." Rotten Tomatoes shat on Stallone's attempts to make a movie about arm wrestling that reveals a deeper tale of father-son bonding. But we see the beauty in this old rig, as Roger recounts stories of his truck-driving father, Gene drops some military school knowledge, and real-life daddy Big D frets about child safety. The Shat Crew also discover what ram-raiding is, explore arm wrestling tournament rules, gasp at the gratuitous product placement, and rock out to a killer soundtrack that includes Kenny Loggins, Sammy Hagar, and synth community darling Giorgio Moroder. Plus, hear Roger Roeper's theory that grandpa Jason Cutler (Robert Loggia) actually is a drug kingpin. And get Gene Lyons' review of the questionable fashions on display as he and Roger haul cross-country for love, victory, and a void where their dads used to be. Ep 145The Santa Clause (1994)

E

"Shat The Movies" voters have spoken, and the holiday movie they most wanted to hear in 2019 is "The Santa Clause." Take a magic sleigh ride back to 1994, when Tim Allen was the king of TV and you could still fat shame in the workplace. Listen as the Shat boys discover the true meaning of Christmas, Big D laments the demise to Black Friday, Gene recalls phreaking phone sex lines as a 12-year-old, and Roger yearns for the era of bungling police in feel-good comedies. Other topics include the magic of Denny's, St. Nick's occupational hazards, elven uprisings, how Tim Allen changed our hearts, how Bill Murray passed on the role, and how Bernard the Elf grew up to direct porn. Sorta. Ep 144The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

WARNING! Shat The Movies has hit peak adorable, just in time for the holidays, with its first kid-friendly episode: "The Nightmare Before Christmas." Listener Emmett in Orange decided to reach across the globe to play Santa after hearing young listener Brody calling in from Belfast, Ireland, with one precious question: Is "The Nightmare Before Christmas" a Christmas movie or a Halloween movie? With that, Emmett gifted Brody a Shat The Movies review of the Tim Burton's stop-motion masterpiece and set in motion the most heart-warming winter miracle we've ever witnessed on the podcast. It made Roger clean up his language, made Gene watch a kids movie, and made Big D update his holiday film collection with something more recent than 1970. But this review isn't all holiday cheer. The Shat boys uncover hints of racial exclusion, questionable lyrics, underrepresented holidays, and an obvious lack of a quality screenplay. You'll also hear Dick's idea for a new Hasidionistic musical, "The 8 Days Before Mardi Gras" and find yourself asking if this movie wouldn't have been better as a Beetlejuice holiday special. Ep 143Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)

E

Christmas comes early for Gene Lyons as listener David Petsolt commissions "Bram Stoker's Dracula, the movie that changed the way we see vampires and ruined Keanu Reeves for the better part of a decade. Francis Ford Coppola's insistence on old-school practical effects, combined with Gary Oldman's intense portrayal of The Count, give this movie and undeniable creep factor, but obviously fake backdrops and silly facial hair are too much for Big D to ignore. As Roger and Gene reminisce over what the vampire orgy scene did to their pubescent bodies, Dick balks at cheesy filmmaking and weak female characters. The Shat boys discuss absinthe, 19th century fashion, werewolf sex, Tom Waits, and love. Oh, and Gene gets naked in a sleeping bag. Ep 142Magnolia (1999)

E

Shat The Movies listener Ash 'TJ' Partridge is better to us than we deserve. When we're stumped by a movie, she explains it in the context of literature and history. When we're perplexed by a TV show, she's there to save the day. Ash is a die-hard Shatter, and even made us the godparents of her child. So when she asked us to do "Magnolia" for her husband, Tom, we jumped at the chance. Even though our recording setup stopped working, and Gene caught a sinus infection, and Rog felt too dumb to understand the movie. Paul Thomas Anderson's epic tale of intersecting lives and compassion was the result of a studio being wise enough to say, "Boogie Nights was dope. Do whatever you want, and hire all the badasses in Hollywood." But does it focus too much on the woes of the privileged or rely too heavily on death as an emotional catalyst? Hear why Roger and Gene are afraid of parenthood, why the film's enigmatic rap makes little sense, why Persian moms hate long movies, why Big D thinks bad people make good movies, and how Osama Bin Laden's treachery may have led to Shat The Movies' creation. Ep 141Scarface (1983)

E

Want the Shat Crew to really invest in a movie review? Give us something to relate to! Let Roger the vaper talk about life as a sorta' Cuban. Let Big D talk about the proper use of an M16A1 grenade launcher. Let Gene explain foreign slang and immigration. Listener Dale commissioned Al Pacino's "Scarface," opening the door to lengthy discussions of naming bongs, laughable riot scenes, questionable audio quality, whitewashed Latin-American roles, and why Roger doesn't do cocaine. The boys also lament Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio's melodramatic shitshow of an acting job, talk way too much about the Synth Community, outline how "Scarface" mirrors "The Great Gatsby" and "Macbeth." Ep 140UHF (1989)

E

Listener Erika in Connecticut made Gene Lyons' dreams come true by commissioning the little movie that could: Weird Al's 1989 underground comedy "UHF." This scrappy film mixed corny plot lines with sociopathic humor to remind us all of those strange local stations we watched in our childhood. It was the final role for two very talented actors, and starred several top comedians in their prime: Victoria Jackson, Emo Philips, and Michael Richards. Find out why Gene Lyons defends UHF's blatant racial stereotypes and hear The King Bee's warning about women stealing car keys. Also discover King Bee's sandwich shop plans, who Tex Earnhardt is, and how you can make some money by identifying one-armed villains. Ep 139L.A. Story (1991)

E

Only a Californian can truly appreciate Steve Martin's 1991 labor of love, "L.A. Story." So listener Emmet from Orange, CA, did the honors of commissioning it. And in the grand tradition of Shat The Movies making romantic comedies, things get really personal. Big D recalls his carefree days and asks, "Why do we let life suck our SanDeE dry?" Roger and Gene drool over a young Sarah Jessica Parker, and Gene point out the one sex scene in all of Hollywood he wishes did happen. The Shat boys also examine Shakespeare's impact on "L.A. Story," romantic chemistry between TV weathermen and their British grandmas, Patrick Stewart's genius cameo, Richard E. Grant stealing the show, and how the movie really could be Roger's biography. Ep 138Iron Eagle (1986)

E

Wife of the year Marisa commissioned "Iron Eagle" for her husband, Greg, but really it was a gift to all of Shat Nation. This 1986 Air Force cheese fest holds a special place in the hearts of '80s kids and inspired a disturbing number of today's pilots. Who knew Top Gun's ugly cousin—filled with bad effects, a generic Middle Eastern enemy, homoerotic undertones, teenage mass murder, horrific Air Force security, ecological disasters, and the worst chase scene since "Prince of Space"—would hold its place as Louis Gossett Jr.'s most recognizable work? In this episode of "Shat the Movies," we discuss Air Force wife swaps, legendary soundtracks, cassette tape players, the '80s cinematic tradition of lonely older men grooming teen prodigies, and the phenomenon of creating black characters just to make them dance. Ep 137The Shining (1980)

E

It's the Third Annual Shat The Movies Halloween Spooktacular and the Third Annual Roger Telling About His Grandparents' Haunted House! In this episode, we cover Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining," a 1980 film staggering in its production value and terrifying in its shooting schedule. Roger Roeper really shines in this episode, as he opens a portal into the world of psychic friends, imaginary friends, and creepy voices. Big D argues that vaping is the same as farting. And Gene beats his head against the wall trying to understand this hedge maze of a movie. The Shat boys also examine Stephen King's criticism of the film, applaud the terrific sound editing, lament the rampant misogyny, ponder trusting Scatman Crothers, and reminisce about the comfort of old timey bartenders. So grab your bowl of candy, queue up the pod, and force every trick-or-treater to listen as Shat The Movies gets spoopy AF. Ep 136Army of Darkness (1992)

E

Big D just watched his first "Evil Dead" movie and is here to talk about it. That alone makes this episode of "Shat The Movies" worth the price of admission. Need more? Listener Chris Powers' "Army of Darkness" commission also triggered discussion about how useless we'd be as time travelers, what a world would look like if killing your sex partners cured the STDs they gave you and Bruce Campbell's undeniable charm. At just 82 minutes, "Army of Darkness" is the shortest movie we've reviewed, but it gave us plenty of material to cover, like Ash's mistreatment of women, when slapstick goes too far, whether campy horror movies should invest in quality special effects, and how much ammunition you should conserve when potentially trapped in the Middle Ages. Plus, Gene won't shut up about "Evil Dead: The Musical." Ep 135The Money Pit (1986)

E

This isn't just a podcast about '80s movies; it's a podcast about FEELINGS. Or at least three guys' ideas on cheating, romantic comedies, and home inspections. Listener Joe in Alexandria, VA, commissioned 1986's "The Money Pit," in which Tom Hanks plays the same role he played in every '80s movie and Shelly Long is 100% swappable with Shelly Duvall. In this episode of Shat The Movies, we explore: horrible '80s hair Brazilian weddings America's obsession with big houses ice cream shop chic and the ubiquity of Euro weirdos in '80s movies. Roger Roeper shares his theories on romance. Gene Lyons discusses the psychological sensitivity of his erections. Dick Ebert laments movies with self-referencing theme songs. Ep 134Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982)

E

Just when you thought we had covered all the '80s space classics: "E.T.," "The Empire Strikes Back," "The Last Starfighter," and "The Thing," listener John Clyburn takes the podcast where no Shat has gone before with "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." Star Trek II widely is considered the best "Star Trek" movie ever made, and "Shat The Movies" certainly recognizes why: a chesty Ricardo Montalban, a young Kirstie Alley, and a surprise death that came years before "Game of Thrones" decided anyone was fair game. But look closer, and you'll see a few cut corners, a few plot holes, and one totally disgusting reason to sleep with cotton balls in your ears. Why do the sets look so cheap in a post-Star Wars era? Why are the deaths to melodramatic? And why doesn't anyone at Star Fleet come up with better security protocols than sending your admiral down to check things out? If you like nerdy commentary, this is the episode for you. Ep 133E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

E

Shat The Movies listeners were asked to choose from six of Dick Eberts' favorites for this week's podcast, but their top choices already had been commissioned by other listeners. We get it: You love Dick. We've done "Demolition Man" and "The Karate Kid," so you're stuck with the film Rotten Tomatoes rated the Greatest Sci-fi movie of all time: "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial." Find out how to pronounce Reese's Pieces and how "E.T" made the candy an overnight success. Learn the Shat Crew's bloody history with animal dissections, and debate whether an alien visiting Earth is more likely to be a miracle messiah or a Typhoid Mary. Gene Lyons praises "E.T." for being secretly spooky, while Roger Roeper and Big D examine the possibly racist undertones of the 1980s Halloween costumes. We'll also cover why E.T.'s has the voice of a chain-smoking woman, whether the alien's design was brilliant artistry or cheap chupacabra, and how Steven Spielberg beat his own box office record when he made "Jurassic Park." Ep 132The Rock (1996)

E

Most "Shat The Movies" episodes are commissioned by listeners who want to hear us revisit films they love. But this one was commissioned by a podcaster who wanted to hear us cover one of Big D's favorite movies. Drew Zakmin, of "One Headlight Podcast," shelled out a few bucks and opened the gates to Michael Bay's greatest cinematic achievement, 1996's "The Rock." It's got everything we've come to expect from a Michael Bay film: explosions, rain, patriotic slow-mo, and even groups of guys in wheelchairs. "The Rock" is utterly mindless summer popcorn fun, but we're not complaining. Dick Ebert sees the beauty in side characters that gently tug on racial and sexual stereotypes. Gene Lyons takes care to praise the perfect amount of Nicholas Cage-ness while respecting the real star of this movie: the always-destined-to-die-while-wearing-a-headset Michael Biehn. And Roger Roeper explores the bizarre Goonies underbelly of Alcatraz. If you're a fan of using science to kill rogue Marines, don't like soft-ass shit, and want to see the Sexiest Man Alive in one of his most famous roles, this is the movie for you. "The Boondock Saints" went from the hottest script in Hollywood to a pathetic five-theater release, to one of the biggest cult classics of the late '90s. But does Troy Duffy's underground hit film live up to all the hype, or was it just a weird byproduct of an edgy era? Listener Jim L. from London wired some money across the pond to commission this shoot-em-up episode of Shat The Movies, exposing Big D to his first taste of The Saints in action. Did you know Duffy originally wanted Mark Wahlberg, Kenneth Branagh, and even Robert De Niro in this movie? Gene did. Did you know there's some lovely side dick? Rog did. Did you know "The Boondock Saints" paved the way for "John Wick" to be made? It's not a fact, but Gene's pretty sure of it. Also explore whether "The Boondock Saints" is loosely based on Kevin Smith's "Dogma," what constitutes telegraphing homosexuality, and Duffy's surprisingly artistic use of slow motion. Ep 130Kindergarten Cop (1990)

E

Have you ever caught yourself thinking, "I'd like some parenting advice from three male podcasters stuck in the '90s?" If you answered yes, then this is the podcast for you. Listener Stephanie commissioned "Kindergarten Cop," the ninth Arnold Schwarzenegger title featured on "Shat The Movies" and a perfect portrait of Arnold's awkward shift from action to comedy. Be there for Arnold's first passionate on-screen kiss, learn the difference between parrots and ferrets, find our why Roger Roeper doesn't want kids, and explore possible ties between "Kindergarten Cop" and the Third Reich. If that isn't enough for you, the Shat boys also surface Gene's and Big D's fighting days, advise on how to escape killer ex-husbands, and obsess over Schwarzenegger's pube-like facial hair. Ep 129The Cable Guy (1996)

E

With Big D visiting Gene and Roger in Arizona, this week's "Shat The Movies" keyword is "friendship." And what better movie to exemplify friendship than Jim Carrey's smash '90s hit? No, not "Dumb and Dumber" (which actually won in listener voting), but "The Cable Guy," a movie Roger Roeper can quote start to finish and Gene Lyons never had seen. We called an audible this week, actually visited Medieval Times in Scottsdale, Ariz., and immediately recorded this candid review of a dark comedy largely unappreciated in its time. "The Cable Guy" really caught out attention and unearthed some hot topics, including the ethics of hiring sex workers, the dynamics of one-sided friendships, the genius of Ben Stiller and Judd Apatow, the magic of stolen cable, Big D's dream party, Jim Carrey's gigantic paycheck, multilayered gags, false accusations, and a possible darker side to Carrey's character, Chip Douglas. Oh, and we're still going to do "Dumb and Dumber." This podcast isn't a dictatorship. Ep 128Dogma (1999)

E

"Shat The Movies" celebrates 127 successful episodes of lighthearted banter about silly movies by reviewing a 1999 Kevin Smith hit that was labeled "blasphemy" by the Catholic League and bore its own warning label for offensiveness: It's "Dogma,' y'all. Listener John U. from Minnesota commissioned this controversial comedy, and really he got two movies for the price of one. In one movie, John got an all-star cast including Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, George Carlin, and Alan Rickman. In the other movie, he got pathetic attempts at acting by Chris Rock, Salma Hayek, and Smith. Roger Roeper tries to convince Gene and Big D that Smith is to comedy what Tarantino is to action dramas. Big D tells tales from anti-masturbation men's groups. Gene rails against schoolgirl outfits for strippers. And Kevin Smith tries to cram every idea he's ever had into 120 minutes of film. Ep 127The Karate Kid (1984)

E

In Part 2 of our Wondertwins co-commission, younger brother Josh dedicates "The Karate Kid" to big brother Adam. And the Shat Crew gets crazy nostalgic over this 1984 martial arts father-son romance. Gene predictably brings his three decades of martial arts experience to the table, while Roger explores the darker side of Mr. Miyagi's hermit status, Daniel's mischief, and Daniel's mom's conspicuously optimistic behavior. "The Karate Kid" stands up as a timeless classic, but we noticed a few things we missed as kids: a lackluster score from a legendary composer, hints of racism and sexism, an abundance of soccer, missed food gags, and a real question of who ultimately was the aggressor in the standoff between the bully Johnny and the rebel Daniel. Also, did you know Ralph Macchio was 22 YEARS OLD when this was filmed? Changes the whole movie. Regardless of whether you loved it or hated it, "The Karate Kid" was long overdue. Strike first. Strike hard. No Mercy. Ep 126Bad Boys (1995)

E

What do you buy your twin for his birthday? A "Shat The Movies" review! What does he buy you? The same. Because, y'know, twins. This week's commission, coming from listener Adam for his brother Josh, is Michael Bay's directorial debut and a '90s action-comedy that confused the hell out of Roger Roeper. "Bad Boys" is a little too bloody to be a pure comedy. And it's a little too farcical to be a serious cop drama. Instead, you have a movie that touched off a franchise and propelled Martin Lawrence and Will Smith to movie stardom. Big D rails at the shoddy police work and asks the Shat Crew whether they'd steal from a crime scene. Gene drools over Will Smith and hails Martin Lawrence as a comedic genius, and Rog rewrites the movie to make it darker, more violent, and more mysterious. Also in this "Shat The Movies" episode: Michael Bay's music video background Martin Lawrence's TV career and meltdown Roger's whiteness and/or inability to remember names Explosions. So many explosions. Ep 125From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)

E

Roger Roeper labeled "From Dusk Till Dawn" a tale of two movies, and he couldn't be more correct. Robert Rodriguez directing and Quentin Tarantino writing always equals something special, but is it a gritty shoot-em-up or a campy gorefest? And can a movie successfully be both? "From Dusk Till Dawn" was commissioned by listener Christian Di Leo and stars an impressive cast include George Clooney in his first starring Hollywood role, Cheech Marin in three different roles, Harvey Keitel, Juliette Lewis, Danny Trejo, Salma Hayek, and Tarantino himself. Big D quizzes Gene Lyons on vampire killing techniques. Rog connects "From Dusk Till Dawn" with "The Walking Dead," and all three explore the sexual depravity and background behind Salma Hayek's iconic snake dance. Also, PUSSY PUSSY PUSSY! Ep 124Galaxy Quest (1999)

E

This week, we bid happy retirement to a listener to got the shaft from his employer, then realized he already had enough money to retire. Rob P. has been a longtime listener of both Shat on TV and Shat The Movies, and his film commission is nothing short of stellar. Boldly going where no Shatter has gone before, Rob chose a movie released in the final week of the '90s. And though "Galaxy Quest" never broke the top 5 in the box office, it might be the greatest sci-fi parody of all time. Gene Lyons, Roger Roeper, and Dick Ebert break down the difference between Trekkies and Trekkers, celebrate Galaxy Quest's outstanding casting, and contemplate the proper approach to sex with aliens. Rog and Gene also swap tales from Comic-Con, with Gene recounting how he stole from Lou Ferrigno and Rog worshipping Alec Baldwin's blue-collar roots. And, of course, we had to imitate Thermians and talk about boobs. Because we're adults. Ep 123Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)

E

This week's Shat The Movies category is Roger's Favorite Movies, and the listeners overwhelmingly chose "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure," a film that gave us the opportunity to discuss Gene's music career, Big D's dislike of Southern California slang, and how a lack of dance moves cost Roger the most wanted job at Universal Studios. Learn about "Bill & Ted's" shoestring budget and imperiled past while the Shat Crew discovers cock rock, scoffs at time travel paradoxes, and worships George Carlin. Things get dicey when Dick recalls history reports in elementary school and Roger reveals how his family stole prime farmland in Alabama. And of course the podcast covers Napoleon, Joan of Arc, Abraham Lincoln, and all the historical figures kidnapped by Bill and Ted. Party on, dudes! Ep 122Escape from New York (1981)

E

Two dystopian American films from the '80s are huge in Norway: "Blade Runner" and "Escape from New York." We shat all over the former, so Norwegian listener Per T. commissioned the latter. If you think the Shat The Movies crew doesn't know much about covert missions into futuristic prison islands, think again. Big D brings his military experience, landmine expertise, and New York roots. Gene Lyons explains how to defeat giant wrestlers swinging baseball bats. And Roger Roeper sees his father in every Kurt Russell character. Other topics on this podcast include: Why Manhattan makes for an awful detention facility Snake Plissken's "buttrock commando" armament What Roger thought that Snake's tattoo was Wives on set Comically oversized gadgets What The Crazies live underground Godawful foley work and U.S. soccer veteran Michael Bradley's short legs Subscribe & Follow Android: http://shatthemovies.com/android Apple/iTunes: http://shatthemovies.com/itunes Social Media: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat Website: http://shatthemovies.com/ Help Support the Podcast Donate with Paypal: http://shatthemovies.com/paypal Donate With Venmo: https://venmo.com/shatpodcasts Shop Amazon With Our Affiliate Link: https://www.amazon.com/?tag=shatmovies-20 Sponsor's Listener Survey: http://shatthemovies.com/survey Leave an iTunes Review: http://shatthemovies.com/review Vote for our Next Movies: http://shatthemovies.com/vote Feeds & Social Media: http://shatthemovies.com/subscribe-and-follow Leave a Voicemail: (914) 719-SHAT - (914) 719-7428 Email: [email protected] Listen to our TV Podcasts: https://shatontv.com/shat-on-podcasts Theme Song - Die Hard by Guyz Nite: https://www.facebook.com/guyznite

Ep 121The Sandlot (1993)

E

Shat The Movies listener Valorie commissioned "The Sandlot" thinking she would get a podcast about the 1993 coming-of-age baseball classic. Instead, she got a curveball with a little mustard on it as hosts Roger Roeper and Dick Ebert retell their glorious softball history that spans from Singaporean caning to Big D's dribblers to the plate. Meanwhile, Gene Lyons goes full Social Justice Warrior as he decries Squints' devious assault on Wendy Peffercorn and laments the incomprehensibly cruel treatment of The Beast. This episode of Shat The Movies also covers when to call your stepdad "dad," whether a man should have to endure his replacement touching his dog, Major League segregation, nicotine gum pranks, and who should have been cast instead of James Earl Jones. Ep 120Videodrome (1983)

E

The story behind this week's commissioned film review could be a movie of its own: The loving wife of a northern England postman secretly saves the money to hire three misfit Americans to surprise him with a podcast about one of his favorite flicks. But what she doesn't tell them is watching "Videodrome" will cause unexpected changes in their minds and bodies! Dick Ebert immediately begins have strange nightmares. Roger Roeper begins seeing political conspiracies. And Gene Lyons feels the sudden need for sadomasochistic context to achieve an erection. What else would you expect from a David Cronenberg cult classic starring a young James Woods and a surprisingly gripping performance from Blondie vocalist Deborah Harry. Ep 119Demolition Man (1993)

E

Why would anyone pay us to review a 1993 action-comedy starring an aging Sylvester Stallone and over-the-top Wesley Snipes? Because it's incredibly easy to watch and superbly entertaining. "Demolition Man" is a '90s action movie with '80s action movie in its DNA. It might even be that last true '80s action movie, packed with one-liners and inexplicable explosions. Plus VR sex, Taco Bell, and shot after shot of Stallone slow-motion diving with guns blazing. Things get weird this week as the original Shat The Movies trio--Roger, Dick, and Gene-- dive deep into cryprison vs. regular prison, hostage raid tactics, foreplay, a world without murder, Sandra Bullock's Sandraness, and the world's worst movie soundtrack. Ep 118The Princess Bride (1987)

E

How have we gone more than 100 movies without reviewing "The Princess Bride?" It's a travesty of justice, one that Shat The Movies listener Adam R. decided to correct with his generous commission. Is it a comedy? Is it a romance? Is it an action film, or a fantasy tale? The answer is yes. "The Princess Bride" is all of these things in an infinitely quotable and absolutely unforgettable package. In this episode, we discuss whether '80s video games were better than today's, why Rob Reiner would hire an actor whose speech he couldn't understand, and how "The Princess Bride" somehow looked better than "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" on a fraction of the budget. Gene explains why the film's politeness sets it apart from other '80s greats. Dick tells the tale of how Billy Crystal and Carol Kane were robbed of even better-improvised scenes, and Roger argues that no other movie has as many stellar performances by as many brilliant actors. Ep 117Robocop (1987)

E

The original Shat The Movies trio is back! Roger Roeper joins Dick Ebert and Gene Lyons to review the dystopian Detroit crime classic "Robocop." Like most Paul Verhoeven movies, "Robocop" has spoof commercials, gratuitous violence, and co-ed shower scenes. But this 1987 relief carries the distinct honor of being the Dutch director's most coherent blend of action and satire. And it's oh-so-quotable. If you've ever wondered what was on the X-rated version, why ED-209 was so violent, or whether Officer Lewis had the hots for Officer Murphy, this is the podcast for you. If you ever wanted to know the connection between Robocop and Abraham Lincoln, this is the podcast for you. Ep 116Point Break (1991) Encore Presentation

E

Keanu Reeves' pro-pooch, mega-violent action trilogy is complete with this week's release of "John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum," and we'd love to review it for you. But our VHS collections only go so far as 1999. What a lot of people don't know is that before there was John Wick 3, there was John Wick 2. And before that, Keanu Reeves starred a little movie called John Wick. But years before John Wick's 2014 release, we could already sense Keanu Reeves had action movies in his blood. There was "The Matrix," which we've covered. And Johnny Mnemonic, which sucked shit. And "Speed 2," which he wasn't in. None of those was worthy of our Best of Shat The Movies collection. Only one film brought together all the amazing elements of '90s action, sexy surf bodies, dead presidents, surprisingly affordable food, and the incomparable Patrick Swayze. Today, we present to you the 1991 homage to extreme sports and reckless gunplay: Point Break. Thanks so much for listening, and we can't wait to be back with you. Enjoy the show. . This week, our Best Of series takes us back in time to review one of the rare movies Roger Roeper, Dick Ebert, and I all agreed on: "Back to The Future." If you recently saw "Avengers: Endgame," you know "Back to The Future" is utter bullshit. And if you haven't seen "Back to The Future," you really should. In honor of the Battle of Winterfell, we're proud to present our recap of a movie that shows some real military tactics, including how to infiltrate a cult, how to fight a giant serpent, how to burn a witch, and how to solve the Riddle of Steel. "Conan The Barbarian" is a special moment in Shat The Movies history. It's one of Dick Ebert's shining moments and the episode that made Kerri Gross realize she loves Arnold Schwarzenegger movies. Out of more than 100 Shat The Movies episodes, this truly is among the funniest. Ep 113Road House (1989) Encore Presentation

E

"Road House" invented the good bad movie. But was it actually any good? Patrick Swayze was charming but grossly undersized. The script was quotable but largely nonsense. And did you know Road House is two words? Whether you relished Sam Elliot's smooth bass and glorious mane or cringed at the ridiculousness of tearing out throats, one thing is for sure: the boobs, butts, and bar fights were pure '80s. Ep 112Predator 2 (1990) Encore Presentation

E

Predator rocked the barrier between action and sci-fi when Arnold Schwarzenegger battled a new kind of enemy in 1987. This isn't that movie. On its face, taking the thrilling Predator formula and applying it to an urban setting makes for a good movie. Throw in big names like Danny Glover, Bill Paxton, and Gary Busey, and you should have a blockbuster. So how did 1990's Predator 2 fail? We'll tell you how! Ep 111King Ralph (1991)

E

When the royal family is accidentally killed, the heir to the throne proves to be a loutish American named Ralph Jones (John Goodman). Overnight, Ralph goes from sleazy Las Vegas lounge singer to King of England, and it's royal secretary Cedric Willingham's (Peter O'Toole) job to try to civilize him. But it's not easy weaning Ralph off of fast food, and even harder keeping him away from a kindly stripper (Camille Coduri). Meanwhile, the next would-be heir (John Hurt) plots Ralph's demise. Ep 110Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985)

E

Kerri Gross prayed for it, and listener CarmelitaValdezMcKoy answered. We're reviewing the 1985 oddity "Pee-wee's Big Adventure." This groundbreaking movie made Paul Reubens a star, put Tim Burton on the map, and was the first time Oingo Boingo's Danny Elfman worked with Burton on an irresistible film score. Gene Lyons argues "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" is the most memorable movie of all time. Who could forget Pee-wee's legendary bike, Large Marge, Dee Snyder, the singing hobo, the pet shop, or the fact Jimmy Smits was not in this movie? The Shat Crew touches on Pee-wee's adult-theater arrest, the failure of Pee-wee sequels, and whether hitch hiking is an Out West thing or a Florida thing. Kerri recalls seeing Pee-wee live while sitting between Andy Dick and Corey Feldman. Dick Ebert asks how this film is so funny when it shouldn't be. And Gene applauds Pee-wee's glorious ensemble ending. Ep 109The Natural (1984)

E

"The Natural" belongs in any debate over the best sports movie ever. It has Robert Redford in his prime, a stunning Kim Basinger, huffy Wilford Brimley, sly Robert Duvall, powerful Glenn Close, and even a young Michael Madsen. They're all delivering top-notch performances on a picture-perfect backdrop that feels really real for an '80s movie. Shat The Movies listener Vince commissioned this baseball classic just as hosts Dick Ebert and Drew Zakmin are gearing up for Opening Day. It's full of iconic scenes that bring us all back to our playing days, when we imagined each of us could swing his own Wonderboy bat and be the greatest that ever played the game. Everything ages, and "The Natural" aged surprisingly well, but not everything was a home run. Redford is 46 and playing a 19-year-old. His character, Roy Hobbs, seems to leave a trail of death wherever he goes. And the final inning is cornier than a Nebraska farm. In this episode, you'll also hear our list of the worst sports-movie actors of all time, find out how a young Big D would get pumped up for high school games, and learn why your mom got a care package from Derek Jeter. Ep 108Total Recall (1990)

E

The most expensive film of its day, "Total Recall" took Arnold Schwarzenegger's career to new heights by adding star power like Sharon Stone, technological wonders like full body scanners, and philosophical questions about the nature of reality. This 1990 sci-fi rollercoaster didn't sacrifice any of the Schwarzenegger charm. We still get the punchlines, the over-the-top action, the gratuitous use of meat shields, and the "Conan The Barbarian" theme song. No, seriously, check it out. That shit is stolen. The Shat Crew has the expected debate over whether Quaid's adventures are all implanted memories or a rude awakening. Big D reveals he'd trade a virtual vacation for a virtual babysitter. Kerri Gross just wants virtual sleep. And guest host Drew Zakmin admits to forgetting the names of his friends' children. Do the three hosts recall Kuato and the three-boobed woman? Totally. Ep 107Toy Story (1995)

E

"Toy Story" won the Best of Disney category, and it's easy to see why this Pixar powerhouse spawned an entire franchise. The characters are unforgettable, the attention to detail is unrivaled, and the voice talent is unbeatable. This episode is all about Dick Ebert. One second he's perving out over The Little Mermaid, the next he's impersonating Randy Newman. Big D even brought a special guest along for this '90s movie review: Drew Zakmin, of the One Headlight podcast. Gene Lyons joins them to discuss their favorite childhood toys, the dark side of Woody the Cowboy, Ram Man, Fisto, and parallels between "Toy Story" and its less-popular contemporary "The Christmas Story." Warning: Do not look directly at Baby Molly's face at any point during "Toy Story." It's like a less terrifying Momo. Ep 106Dune (1984)

E

No '80s movie podcast featuring Kerri Gross would be complete without covering David Lynch's sci-fi epic "Dune." But after more than 100 episodes, Shat The Movies couldn't seem to make it happen. In walked listener Greg R. Last year, he wowed us all by commissioning "Rounders" for a Shat review. This time, Greg thought it would be hilarious to saddle us with a movie he simply doesn't get. We knew Kerri would love it. We knew Gene would groan. And we knew Big D would stumble over every name in the film. What we'd forgotten in the years since watching "Dune" was the breathtaking outfits, the inventive technology, and the sheer magnitude of the sand worms. And those were overshadowed by the ridiculously bad combat, the utterly incomprehensible plot, and the persistent whispering of obvious internal monologue. Dune takes itself very seriously, which makes it even more hilarious. In the midst of galactic warfare between Houses, Gene cheers for Baron Harkonnen. Big D sees sex slaves everywhere, and Kerri Gross connects the dots between "Dune" and Iraq while finding her inner Muad'Dib. We're all milking cats in the top floor of the Crazy Town Penthouse. So yank your heart plug and fire up your Weirding Module, Arrakis, here we come! Ep 105Crimson Tide (1995)

E

When an Army veteran and a nurse who knows nothing about the military review a '90s submarine movie, you know it's going to be crazy. Throw in Roger Roeper's tales of babysitting in an alligator costume, and it's full-on insane. Listener Rod Phillips paid Shat The Movies good money to cover "Crimson Tide" as a birthday gift to himself. And his choice wound up being one of the funniest podcasts we've ever done. Kerri wonders how missiles work, Big D dabbles in sailorspeak, and Roger examines which is creepier: magicians or clowns. The Shat Crew celebrates the stellar cast of Denzel Washington, Gene Hackman, Viggo Mortensen, James Gandolfini, Steve Zahn, Ryan Phillippe, and ... Richy Schroder? Kerri bemoans low standards in the military and medical fields. Big D steals the show by explaining the horrors of dying in a sinking sub, shaming fat sailors, and demonstrating he's downright ruthless when it comes to the Trolley Dilemma. And nuke-spooked Roger wishes he were watching "Top Gun." Ep 104Back to The Future Part II (1989)

E

Most sequels give us more of the same. "Back to The Future Part II" changed the game by giving us a world we'd never seen: hoverboards, Pac-Fax, VistaGlide, and filming two sequels back-to-back with cross-promotion embedded in the movie. But bigger isn't always better. Losing "Back to the Future" stars Crispin Glover and Claudia Wells made some scenes awkward and (with the help of prosthetics) borderline creepy. And why does every 40-year-old in this movie sound like she's 70? The time travel gets a little sloppy, but we learn a lot about the Shat The Movies crew when it comes to bending the laws of physics. Big D fears losing his daughter to the Butterfly Effect. Roger Roeper believes he'd become Batman, and Kerri Gross just needs some help with her taxes and investments. Also in this episode: The dark alternate ending where Lorraine kills Biff Roger drools over "Rick and Morty" A soundtrack surprise the Great Hoverboard Hoax Thomas F. Wilson is the real hero of the franchise Doc Brown is a massive hypocrite How the DeLorean was refurbished after years of theft The Shat The Movies crew give their 18-year-old selves life advice. Ep 103License to Drive (1988)

E

How much Corey is too much Corey? Between Corey Haim's mouth breathing and Corey Feldman's avalanche of bombing jokes, we'd say "License to Drive" answers that question emphatically. The Shat Crew expected corny '80s jokes, cheese car stunts, and loads of questionable fashion. But we had no idea "License to Drive" would lead us to tales of severed feet, an Nabokovian hot Heather Graham, and an alternate universe where Gene Lyons laughs at on-screen burps, Roger Roeper mistakenly believe The Fresh Prince's Uncle Phil died of AIDS, and Dick Ebert wishes death upon young and old alike. Ep 102Safe Men (1998)

E

When "Shat The Movies" listener Lucas discovered we wouldn't be doing a Best of Jewish Mob Movies category, he took matters into his own hands. Equipped with $300 and a brilliantly composed email, Lucas convinced Big D we needed to cover the 1998 sleeper "Safe Men." We were amazed to discover one of the strangest films we've witnessed. The cast is good: Sam Rockwell, Steve Zahn, Paul Giamatti, Mark Ruffalo, Harvey Fierstein, Peter Dinklage. The script is reasonable. But there's just something odd about this movie that created a rollercoaster of a conversation among Dick Ebert, Roger Roeper, and Kerri Gross. Learn what each of your Shat The Movies hosts like to do while drunk at 2 a.m., what it's like to hang at the VFW hall while elderly women wait to devour your Marine father's wedding potluck, and how Big D talked Roger out of pursuing a career as a professional event DJ. It's our 100th movie review! And we've been saving one very special movie for this massive milestone. Tear off your shirt, flex your freedom, and GET TO THE CHOPPAH! It's "Predator" time. Let's go back to 1987, when Schwarzenegger was Apex Arnold, military tactics meant nothing in movies, on-set cocaine binges were an daily occurrence, and Jesse Ventura yelled things no governor would dream of saying. Discover Gene Lyons' obsession with WWE wrestling, Roger Roeper's obsession with telling everyone they just said what he was about to say, and Billy Duke's obsession with sweating a lot. Did you know Jean-Claude Van Damme was the original alien in "Predator"? Big D tells about how the Muscles for Brussels tried to turn the Predator into a kickboxer from out of space and why Van Damme told film executives to kiss his balls. Find out what a 2003 Pizza Hut promotion had to do with this 1989 comedy and how much mustaches confuse Kerri. We also cover Big D's Caribbean party life, how hot New York actually gets, and what actually happens to a body after death. Roger lies about lying to get laid. Big D explains the aphrodesiacal properties of boats. And Kerri reveals that nurses like to play a little game called How Would You Kill Somebody And Not Get Caught? Ep 99The Burbs (1989)

E

Big D thought we should do a Best of Rick Ducommun, and you're probably wondering who that is. You're not alone. Ducommun was in "Spaceballs," "The Last Boy Scout," "Die Hard," "Groundhog Day," and dozens of other '80s and '90s classics. You might say he's Mr. Shat The Movies, and Big D is a big fan. So it's only fitting that Dick Ebert pop his Shat The Movies hosting cherry by guiding us through the 1989 classic "The Burbs," best known for another actor you might have heard of: Tom Hanks. Kerri Gross and The King Bee join Big D in discussing nipple hunting on cable TV, "The Burbs" connection to "The Silence of The Lambs," what the hell Corey Feldman is doing in this movie, Tom Hanks' disagreeable side, and how to be an awful neighbor. Also, learn what Kerri wears when she prowls her block as the Goth Avenger. And Big D pulls off another uncanny celebrity impersonation. Ep 98The Crow (1994)

E

"The Crow" isn't the greatest movie of the '90s. It's not even the best movie of 1994. But for a lot of thirty-somethings, this movie was a huge part of adolescence. But Shat The Movies has passed it over again and again. Well, listener Joshua decided that's some bullshit and decided to FIRE IT UP. Shat The Movies resident goths Gene Lyons and Kerri Gross join misanthrope King Bee to examine Brandon Lee's mysterious death, a cursed movie set, the difference between a crow and a raven, and the miracles of rent in downtown Detroit. The King Bee asks whether Frank Miller's "Sin City" influenced the hypersaturated, gritty look and feel "The Crow." Kerri evaluates costuming and mysticism. And, in the course of it all, Gene somehow turns into a Crow apologist. This one goes out to Joshua and his wife. If "The Crow" did nothing else, it brought two little lovebirds together.
