Ep 8181: No Excuses: Obliterating the Obstacles In Front Of You
In episode 81, Zion Clark, Athlete and Motivational Speaker, joins us. Specifically Zion will be looking at: Importance of sport Obstacles in training/competition Case study: typical training day Examples of how Sport Science helps him About Zion "Zion was born on September 29, 1997 in Columbus, OH. Due to his condition (Caudal Regression Syndrome...born with no legs), and his birth mother's inability to care for him, Zion was immediately thrust into the foster care system. Thus, his journey to find a permanent home and a someone to call "mom" began. Over the course of the next 16 years Zion moved numerous times and found himself in a variety of circumstances and environments...many of them unfavorable. Zion was introduced to the sport of wrestling while in elementary school, but initially didn't fare very well...in fact, he didn't win a match for several years. Upon entering Massillon High School, Zion met Coach Gil Donahue who recognized his passion for the sport and relentless work ethic. A wonderful friendship and bond was forged. Over the next 3 years Zion improved his wrestling technique and hit the weight room like a man possessed. An amazing transformation followed! Part of this miraculous course of events included Zion being adopted by a woman who had been praying for a son for years! In dramatic fashion, the process was completed only within days before Zion was officially scheduled to be legally aged-out (no chance of adoption). In his senior year, Zion finished the season 33-15 and was one match from qualifying for the D-I Ohio High School State Wrestling Championships. In an incredible display of heart and determination, Zion wrestled his opponent (a 20 pd. weight differential) beyond the grueling 6 minutes of regulation and 2 overtimes...only to fall 1-0 in sudden death. The fans in the packed gymnasium rose to their feet and zealously applauded Zion's courageous effort. A few months later Zion went on to capture his second high school track wheel chair racing title at the state championships. Zion's herculean efforts hadn't gone unnoticed as a Hollywood producer documented his journey during senior year. The film "Zion" garnered critical acclaim at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival (2018) and global media exposure (it's currently available on Netflix). Zion was recruited by several colleges to wrestle and chose to attend Kent State (Tuscarawas)...where he spent the following 2 years steadily improving his skills and finding success at the varsity level. With his confidence and national ranking on the rise, Zion decided to embark on his toughest mission to date...becoming the first American Athlete to compete in both the Olympic (wrestling) and Paralympic (wheelchair racing) Games in Tokyo (2020). Understanding the magnitude of this difficult challenge, Zion has surrounded himself with a very dedicated and highly supportive team...including budding friendships with Olympic/World Champion Jordan Burroughs and undefeated (133-0) 4x NCAA titlist Joey Davis. Due to his tremendous upper body strength and athleticism, Zion is also pursuing interests in power lifting (bench press), wheelchair bodybuilding, and the circus arts. In addition to his brutal training/practice regimen, Zion stays busy as a motivational speaker. The moral of Zion's inspirational story is that things don't always go smoothly in life...but in order to succeed, you must adapt to your individual circumstances. Priding himself in hard work, Zion offers that there are no excuses...or shortcuts! It's all about faith, passion, and perseverance. Zion urges others to "Be Greater Than" > ...the obstacles you face. YOU, and only YOU are in control of your destiny!" Being a sports fanatic his whole life, Teun was determined to pursue a career in professional sports. He started coaching at age 16 and studied for over 9 years in the field of sports- and human movement sciences. He had his first elite-level coaching experience at the New South Wales Institute of Sports in Sydney. It was during this period that he met Frans Bosch, who was lecturing at his university. Teun and Frans have been working together ever since. After graduating cum laude from university with a Bachelor’s – and a few years later with a Master’s degree, he started to work full time in professional sports. During the past 10 years, Teun continued his education in specializing in the field of movement analysis, injury prevention and the practical application of modern ideas of motor control and learning into training. Ep 4646: Range: The Game-Changing Truth Behind Early Specialisation
In episode 46, David Epstein, Best Selling Author, joins us. Specifically David will be looking at: What range is Why range is superior Impact of improved range How to practically get more range About David "David Epstein is the author of the #1 New York Times best seller Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World — which Bill Gates featured in his end-of-year recommendations — and of the New York Times best seller The Sports Gene, both of which have been translated in more than 20 languages. (To his surprise, the latter was purchased not only by his sister but also by President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.) He is also the host of Slate’s popular “How To!” podcast. He was previously a science and investigative reporter at ProPublica, and prior to that a senior writer at Sports Illustrated, where he co-authored the story that revealed Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez had used steroids. His writing has been honored by an array of organizations, from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, to the Society of Professional Journalists and the National Center on Disability and Journalism, and has been included in the Best American Science and Nature Writing anthology. His story “Following the Trail of Broken Hearts,” on sudden cardiac death in athletes, was chosen as one of the top 100 stories of the last 100 years by Columbia Journalism alumni. David has given talks about performance science and the uses (and misuses) of data on five continents; his TED Talks (here and here) have been viewed more than 10 million times. Three of his stories have been optioned for films: a Sports Illustrated story on the only living Olympian to have survived a concentration camp; an Atlantic/ProPublica piece detailing the DEA’s fraught pursuit of Chapo Guzman’s rivals; and a 2016 “This American Life” episode he wrote and narrated about a woman with two rare diseases who shares a mutant gene with an Olympic medalist. David has master’s degrees in environmental science and journalism, and is reasonably sure he’s the only person to have co-authored a paper in the journal of Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research while a writer at Sports Illustrated. (Like many of the characters in Range, he has benefitted from a winding career.) He has worked as an ecology researcher in the Arctic, studied geology and astronomy while residing in the Sonoran Desert, and blithely signed up to work on the D-deck of a seismic research vessel shortly after it had been attacked by pirates. David enjoys volunteering with the Pat Tillman Foundation and Classroom Champions, and, as of recently, with the National COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma Project. An avid runner, he was a Columbia University record holder and twice NCAA All-East as an 800-meter runner."
