Ep 179179 Another One that Teaches Us to Communicate Better with Others

My guest today is back for part 2 of a lesson in communication. She is Temperaments expert, and I Said This, You Heard That author, Kathleen Edelman. Her mission is to help people use words that build others up. She teaches that "The words you use are a gift that you give to other people". That statement should make us want to think about our words more carefully! Today, Kathleen further explains the Four Temperaments and what to do when we experience miscommunication. If you missed part 1 of this interview, please check it out on episode 117. Nation! I cannot have a conversation with Kathleen and not learn something new about the I Said This, You Heard That study. I would consider myself a diligent student of her material for the past two years, and there is always more to learn. Learning about Temperaments is, hands down, one of the best things I have done to understand how my words sound to people as I am speaking with them. It has been a gamechanger in how I communicate with my team and my family and friends. I hope that the next time you're speaking to someone else, you choose words that are a gift from you to them. Ep 176176 The One About Tagged Polymer Technologies

As water treatment professionals, we must continue to expand on our knowledge of the industry. Learning from others in the industry is a great way to do that! One key aspect of the water treatment industry is understanding polymers. Many of us regularly use these products but have no idea how they are created and where they come from On the podcast today, we are joined again by Mike Standish, co-founder of Radical Polymers. Mike has over 28 years of experience in polymer additive design and development. Before forming Radical Polymers, Mike served in technical and business leadership roles within global, publicly-traded chemical companies. He is responsible for developing and patenting industry-leading polymers for use in the water treatment, oilfield, and detergent industries. Mike will be talking all about tagged polymers and what's new in this space over the last few years in today's episode. After Mike's presentation at the most recent AWT conference, I knew we needed to talk further and get this information to the entire industry. As James McDonald has said about Mike from him joining me on episode 14, "Mike is one of those presenters that you'd listen to even if he was reading from a phone book. He's well-spoken and always highly informative in very relatable terms. Good guest!" I hope you learn something today and enjoy hearing from my friend Mike Standish! Ep 175175 The First One of 2021

Even though most of us were ready for 2020 to be over and never speak its name again, it is essential to take the time to reflect on the past year and what we learned. This is something that I love doing every year no matter what. There were some valuable lessons and many challenges we overcame that we should all be proud of. Once we have taken the time to process the progress we made in 2020, we can turn our attention to the year ahead. In today's episode, I discuss some tips on productivity, goal setting, and being intentional with your time as we move into the new year. When we take time to be intentional instead of just reacting to the year, it can make all the difference in our success. Please enjoy today's episode and happy New Year! First of all, Merry Christmas! How about this? An episode releasing on Christmas Day. Consider it my gift to you! 2020 has been a year like no other. We have faced many challenges, but I think there are also valuable lessons for each of us to learn from 2020. My favorite thing to do at the end of every year is reflecting on what worked well and what did not work well to make the necessary changes for the next year. And of course, always celebrating how far we have come. Although much was out of our control in 2020, I believe we made the most of it and grew together as a water treatment community. In today's episode, we are doing something we have never done before. We are looking back at the top five episodes of 2020 to re-visit some of the lessons we learned together this year. How much money do you think you'd be able to save if you had better information when making daily purchases? I'd suggest that it is a lot. By having better data, we could also reduce our energy consumption and positively impact our environment (and our pocketbooks.) The truth is, we need better information so that we can make better choices. Our guest today is Ron Kamen, an expert in clean energy. He believes firmly that making a transition to clean energy is necessary for our future. In today's episode, we discuss clean energy, ways to save money and reduce our carbon footprint at the same time. Ep 167167 The One with John Fenton

Scaling UP! Nation, it's hard to run your life. Everyone expects the most from you, and you expect the most out of yourself. This leaves most of us running faster and faster until we run out of gas. We all need to take time to get gas and make sure we take care of ourselves before we take care of everything else. The problem is, we don't. Stave yourself too long without that needed gas, and you may not have the option of refueling. My lab partner in today's episode is John Fenton, the "CEO Sensei." John J Fenton is a Certified Success Principles™ Trainer, an award-winning speaker, best-selling author, and leading authority in Leadership. Following a successful 30+Year career as a Managing Partner and CPA in one of the world's largest accounting and consulting firms, John launched his business in 2013 in executive coaching and consulting to help busy executives be the best leaders they can be. Ep 158158 the One That's Virtually Live At 2020 AWT Conference

Happy Association of Water Technologies 2020 Convention week! If it weren't for COVID19, we would all be together right now. However, through the magic of technology, we are virtually together. Proving once again, we can get through COVID19. We can get through anything! We are Water Treaters! Every year the Association of Water Technologies bestows an award called The Ray Baum Memorial Water Technologist of the Year Award. The Association of Water Technologies describes this award as follows: The Ray Baum Memorial Water Technologist of the Year Award, recognizing "outstanding entrepreneurial spirit and contributions to the field of water treatment," will be awarded at the Annual Reception and Awards Dinner held during the Annual Convention. The award is named after Ray Baum, one of AWT's founders. Baum viewed the association as a nurturing support network for small and medium-sized companies, to provide knowledge and activities to allow these companies to grow and compete in the worldwide marketplace. He was committed to the industry whose growth he helped build throughout his career. The recipient should exemplify these characteristics. I am humbled to be the recipient of this award for 2020. Something to celebrate in a year that hasn't had a lot of celebration! Thank you to all who nominated me, and thank you to the AWT board for selecting me as this year's recipient. I look at this award as a symbol of the effect the Scaling UP! Nation! has had on so many, including me. Thank you for being part of The Nation! and being part of something that can elevate the entire water treatment industry. This award is given every year. Who do you think will be next? Will it be someone you know? A guest of this show? Or will it be you? I urge you to look for the qualities that this award celebrates in all water treaters, including yourself. Ep 157157 Pinks and Blues When Your Pinks Don't Turn Pink

Our test kits are our greatest tool. But what happens when the tests we rely on don't do what they are supposed to do? Yes, your tests know how to lie! They also know how to have a bit of fun and not react the way you are expecting. Adds a bit more fun to our job, doesn't it? Well, the fact is our test will always react within the confines of chemistry, even if we don't understand the chemistry. The only way to truly understand your tests is to understand the chemistry that allows them to work. And there again, another thing to learn in water treatment. This is why I always say that you should learn something every day in the water treatment industry! Today, we are going to talk about understanding our tests better. I have chosen questions from the Scaling UP! mailbag about tests. What happens when our pinks don't turn pink, and our blues don't turn blue? That's what we are talking about today. Ep 156156 The One with Tricia Molloy

If there has ever been a year we need more positive things in our lives, it is 2020. I spent a good part of 2020 focused on the things I couldn't do because of COVID 19. I couldn't go to AWT's training seminar in March, and several of my other speaking and facilitating engagements got canceled. Our church stopped holding in-person services, and the two vacations we had planned got canceled. 2020 stinks, right?! Fortunately, not too long after all of my plans were getting canceled one after the other, I had a change in mindset. I decided that if I continued focusing on what I could not do, I would never be happy. So, I stopped. I decided I would focus on the things I could do and make sure I did those things to my best ability. After focusing my efforts on things that were within my control, I started to feel better about our situation and more in control. All of the canceled items I mentioned above came back in a new fashion. I was still able to do them, just not as initially planned. Some of the new plans were better than the original plans. And all of them created an opportunity that permitted me to think differently, refining the event or action for the better. If we look for misery, we are going to find it. But why choose to look for that? My guest today is Tricia Molloy, an author, speaker, and coach. She has been a featured keynote speaker for many well-known companies like Home Depot, Kimberly Clark, GE, Marriott, and The America Red Cross, to name a few. I met Tricia when I was giving my Ted Talk at Tim Fulton's Small Business Matters Conference. For those of you that haven't heard that story, please listen to episode 92. Tricia has a simple approach that she guides people through called CRAVE. You will learn how to use CRAVE to start some great new habits, all designed to make you more focused on what brings you happiness. Because after all, that is what we should be looking to find. Ep 155155 Pinks and Blues: Questions just for Trace

I have been a water Treater for over 25 years. And there is no doubt about it; I love my job. I get private tours of facilities that make products I use regularly. I have great relationships with my customers that have turned into friendships. I have met some outstanding fellow Water Treaters, some of which have become my best friends. And many other unexpected benefits for being in the Industrial Water Treatment Industry. Hands down, the most surprising is becoming the host of the podcast the serves our industry. One of the segments we do that makes the show so popular is we give our listeners a voice. Sometimes they leave questions on a form, and sometimes they use their voice. Question and answer shows receive the most comments. And that is what today's show is. I tend to answer technical questions on the show, making this so a bit different. Today, it is all about personal items people want to know about me. You asked for it, and I'm going to answer it. So here it is. Timestamps: How can we end Legionnaire's Disease? Is this possible? Ep 154154 The One With AWT President, Tom Brandvold, CWT

"Normally, during this time of year, I am getting ready to see all of you at The Association of Water Technologies Annual Convention. But, as everything goes, this year, I figured that wouldn't be happening. " Those were my thoughts before I learned more about the virtual convention AWT is doing instead of an in-person event. Yes, I am sad that I cannot see all of the members of the Scaling UP! Nation! that attend this event every year. But there is so much the virtual option offers. So, if you are like I was and you feel bummed about not going to this in person, you are going to want to listen to this episode! You will find that there is so much going on virtually that you won't want to miss it. Our guest today is Tom Brandvold, CWT, this year's AWT President. Tom and the other AWT directors had to make hard choices this year. Tom shares what went into that decision to choose a virtual convention instead of our regular in-person meeting. Tom also shares tips, tricks, and tools that will allow you to get the most out of this virtual event. In addition to being this year's AWT President, Tom is a very accomplished water treater. I was able to ask him to share his water treater experiences and stories with us. You will not want to miss this episode. Ep 152152 The One Where We Talk More About Legionella

We are in the middle of Legionella Awareness Month. The goal of devoting a month of episodes to Legionella is to raise the bar on our water treatment knowledge when it comes to Legionella. On many shows, I ask how you are learning new things. It is effortless to become complacent with our current knowledge and not actively seek more. A day that I don't learn something new, I consider a failure. Our guest today is Greg Rankin, CEO of Hydrosense. Greg's company has developed a legionella test that reads in 20 minutes. Happy August Scaling UP! Nation! In honor of the Annual Legionella Conference at the end of every August, The Scaling UP! Nation! declared August: Legionella Awareness Month. In line with most conferences currently, The Legionella Conference is now in January 2021. But that doesn't mean we can't learn more about this bacterium. So please help me raise the bar on Legionella Awareness during August. In today's episode, we are going back to basics on the topic of Legionella. Ep 149149 The One About Some of the Lesser-Used Technologies

Scaling UP! Nation!, as a water treater, we always need to learn new things. If we ever stop learning, somebody else or the industry is going to pass you by. Staying ahead of this curve is especially important when it comes to learning new and innovative ways to treat the water treatment systems we oversee. If we are not careful, we can become overly comfortable with the same type of water treatment program. New technologies are always developing around us, but does new mean better? Friend of the show, Mark Lewis, CWT, is back with me today to talk about some of the lesser-used water treatment strategies in the water treatment world. Learning about new or lesser-known water technologies gives water treaters more options. A good water treater with possibilities is always a good thing. Ep 147147 Pinks and Blues Questions From the Nation!

Today's episode is my favorite format that we do. It is where you ask questions, and I answer them. As a water treatment professional, we should always have more questions than answers. Generating new questions means that we are thinking about everything we are doing, and we are trying to do what we do better. If you are not asking questions (even to yourself), you are not stretching your level of understanding. When you stretch yourself, you are learning. When you are learning, you are getting better. The next time you do a water treatment task, ask yourself, "why." Why does the chlorine test turn red when positive? Why do I run my tests in this sequence? Why do I always start at this account first on my route? Why take my sample from this location? I'm sure you get the idea. Please enjoy this episode of Pinks and Blues where members of the Scaling UP! Nation! ask some questions they have. Ep 146146 The One Where We Bring EOS and Sales Together

I know what you are thinking, I am crazy to have all these processes. Well, I think you are insane not to have all these processes. A process allows a standard of quality no matter who is performing the task. In episode 131, I spoke with Alicia Butler Pierre, all about processes. One of the components of the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) is processes. EOS refers to it as "the way." And companies following EOS don't have an issue creating processes until it comes to the sales department. Most sales departments have as many different ways to 'make sales' as they do salespeople. This method or lack of practice is inefficient and outdated. In episode 39, I spoke with Justin Roff-Marsh about this very topic. Justin makes a great case on why we need to bring the sales department into modern days when it comes to processes. In today's episode, we are going to talk with Adam Shapiro of Sales Reform School. Adam can help you find the right processes to achieve the highest results in the sales department. He is also an EOS speaker. We will learn about how we can take all of the items we learned in EOS into the sales department and make that department more efficient, more profitable, and more fun. Today's episode might feel a little different than usual. However, we could all use a positive mental attitude boost during these challenging times. I know you've heard me talk about my favorite book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, before on this show. Habit 1 is about being proactive. It's a choice not to react when something happens to you. Instead, we should pause and choose our response to what we should do. I wanted to share with you about the two circles that portray this habit. Looking at these two circles, if we are not careful, we will gravitate towards spending our time in the sphere of concern. In other words, we tend to focus on the things we have no influence over instead of the things we directly can affect. In turn, we are unable to gain much traction. When we choose to spend our time and energy on the things we can directly influence our circle grows larger and we find movement. Today's message from Holly Duckworth is no different. She offers a few practical tips to help you slow down, be present with those around you, and find success in a more meaningful way. Holly teaches mindful leadership to stressed-out CEOs worldwide to create profits, peace, and presence. Our world has become mindless and stressed to unhealthy levels. Thru mindfulness practices, Holly works with leaders to release beliefs that no longer serve. What is mindful leadership you ask? Well, join us today to find out precisely what mindful leadership means and how you can implement it in your career for the positive! Ep 144144 The One Where We Talk About Virtual Assistants

It is not uncommon for people to tell me they are impressed with the amount of work I can get done. This attribute has helped me get noticed over the years. As my years increased, so have my tasks. Like most of us, I had more to do, so I did more. Usually, this time came at the expense of taking personal time and time away from family activities. Eventually, when there was even less bandwidth, things were done subpar, or items were not getting done. To try to get above this scenario, I decided to be careful about what I said yes to do. But even that wasn't enough, and I realized that I needed help. This suggestion came from a friend of mine who recommended that I get a personal assistant. More specifically, a virtual assistant. Join me as I interview one of my favorite people, my virtual assistant, Lauren Vonfeldt. In this episode, you will learn some of the behind the scenes tasks that need to get accomplished producing this podcast, but more importantly, you will learn how Lauren and I work together. The top ten things a virtual assistant can help with: Research Social media Marketing and emails Tracking expenses or invoicing Calendar management Email management To-do lists Project management Events Editing documents and publications Bonus: Creating staff and client appreciation Timestamps: Lauren's background [12:02] What is a virtual assistant? 142 The One That Helps Us With Video Meetings

Who would think that all of our meetings in the 2nd quarter of 2020 would be over video conference? Not me. I would have bought a hefty amount a Zoom stock if I did. Which, by the way, was trading for about $70 back in February and will now cost you $210. Hindsight, right! For those of us that didn't make it rich buying Zoom stock, you probably use Zoom's product or something like it. Have you ever wondered what the best way to have a video conference is? As a Mastermind Group, The Rising Tide Mastermind meets weekly over Zoom. I have used it for years before the onsite of stay-at-home orders, but I could not remember ever seeing anything on video call etiquette. A member of our Mastermind asked if I could have a speaker come talk to us on this topic. The only issue was, I couldn't find one. No one wanted to disappoint, so I decided to book myself. Please join me for tips, tricks, and yes, etiquette for having your best virtual meeting ever. Trace's top tips for virtual meetings: Find a room that is comfortable, private, with good lighting and reliable wi-fi. Let your family members know that you are going to be on a video call. Find the platform that works best for you. When possible, use your computer, not your phone. Don't sit in front of a window. Think about what is in the background of your video. Prepare for the meeting by reviewing agendas, preparing to screen share, etc. Test the software ahead of time. Dress professionally. Turn your phone notifications off. When you are not the one speaking, mute yourself. Use your camera and look directly into the camera. Think about what your nonverbal cues are saying. If using Zoom, use the gallery view. Be prepared for screen sharing. If you are hosting, offer lots of breaks. If you are hosting, send out an agenda. If you are hosting, make sure that everybody is being heard. If you are hosting, always ask for feedback. If possible, don't eat during a video call. Stay focused on the call at hand. Take private conversations offline. If hosting, be the last to leave the video conference. BONUS TIP: Try right clicking your video to display the menu, then choose Hide Myself. You no longer see the video of yourself, even though others in the meeting can see you. This helps you feel like you are in person and keeps you from being distracted by your video. Key Points 7:36 – Think about the right room to take your virtual meeting in 9:25 – What can you do to minimize interruptions? 9:58 – Trace's preferred virtual meeting service 14:29 – How to prepare for the meeting 23:40 – Take advantage of the video feature 29:40 – Screen sharing 35:45 – Hosting virtual meetings 43:30 – How to stay focused during a video call 51:15 – The difference between video meetings and webinars Key Quotes "When you are in a meeting, be present in that meeting." "When we communicate, 60% or more is through nonverbal cues...make sure your cameras are on." "If you wouldn't do it in a conference room, you shouldn't do it in a video room." "Conference calls are more concentrated than regular in-person calls." "The host's job is to manage the participants." "Don't be afraid to tackle big issues in a video conference." 141 The One About Neglected Accounts

It is the end of the 2nd quarter! Who knew what 2020 was going to bring? Nobody thought it was going to be a pandemic. As we all learn what the "new normal" is for our day to day routines that used to be so typical, we still have to deal with accounts that were not the best before the pandemic. They certainly didn't get any better during the pandemic! My good friend Mark Lewis, CWT is our guest today. Today, Mark is talking about neglected accounts. What is a neglected account? Well, it has a bunch of ways to define it. The bottom line is it is an account that is not at its best. And it is this way for a multitude of reasons. Mark and I are going to talk about those reasons and what we can do about them. Key Points 9:30 – What is a neglected account? 25:28 – Is there a solution to bridge the gap on neglected accounts? 37:14 – What to do with a neglected account 52:20 – Taking over a new account 55:30 – What about neglect in reports? 1:03:10 – Lightning Round Questions Key Quotes "Our job is to go back and explain to the customer the condition that their equipment is in." "We should be saving the customer enough money that our water treatment invoice is not even noticeable." "You should always service the account the way that you feel it should be serviced." "Even though we are called water treaters, we are actually treating the equipment." "Our work-life balance needs to be: I enjoy what I do, and I am good at it." Ep 140140 The One That Helps Us Reopen Building Water Systems

For the last two months, our world has been very different. Who would have thought we would have stay at home orders? I know I didn't! But it did. As we reopen, everybody wants to know what they can do to get back to work. As a water treater, we have a different perspective on what it takes to get a building or facility back up and running. Most owners are thinking about all the things they can see whereas the water treater is thinking about the things we cannot see. Specifically, the things that have been growing in dormant piping while we were all at home. Bacteria and other pathogens did not take a break. Our guest today is Dr. Janet Stout. Janet has been a great friend of our podcast by offering great information about the prevention of Legionnaires Disease. This episode is from an exclusive webinar we did for the Rising Tide Mastermind. To see it go to scalinguph2o.com/janetstout. There you can see the slides that Janet is presenting on. Janet shares what has been going on in the pipes of dormant systems. She gives us best practices that we should share with our clients. Here's the bottom line; we need to help our clients understand that what they cannot see is just as important as the things they can see. We can assist our clients by giving them the information and letting them know what has been happening in their system's piping over the last two months. Ultimately, this will help save someone from suffering later. Please enjoy and share this episode. COVID affects countries. Legionella affects you. If there is a Legionella problem, it will compound your economic recovery." - Dr. Janet Stout "If you ignore Legionella's risk in an unoccupied space, you may pay an enormous price." - Dr. Janet Stout Links Mentioned: The Proactive Webinar Series Rising Tide Mastermind Special Pathogen's Lab Covid-19 Resources

Ep 138138 The One That's All About Cooling Towers - Part 2

Last week we heard from Evapco's Brett Alexander. Brett explained the inner workings of all types of cooling towers and how we can tell the differences between them. We also discussed the different metallurgies that these devices are made of. If you didn't get a chance to listen to last week's episode, please do so. It is a great baseline on cooling tower knowledge. Today, Brett is back, and he is going to continue our discussion from last week. Being a fellow water treater, Brett is going to share his knowledge of water treatment as it pertains to keeping cooling towers in their prime. Take a listen for tips and tricks Brett shares from a water treater's prospective. Ep 137137 The One That's All About Cooling Towers, Part 1

Every day for the past 20+ years I think I have seen a cooling tower either in person, a picture or just thought about one. As an industrial water treater, cooling towers are part of our day to day lives. I do remember a time before that when I did not know what a cooling tower was and having to learn about how it worked. But I must admit, later, I really didn't give them too much thought. Later in my career, I have had the opportunity to work with some of the cooling tower manufacturers, talk about a group of people that have given cooling towers a lot of thought... I soon came to realize that the generic terms that I have for cooling towers did not always translate well when speaking to someone who had such a larger extent of knowledge around cooling towers. Today's episode is focus around this experience. We are going to learn from cooling tower expert Brett Alexander of Evapco. Brett will share with us terminology and function of the device we all know and love, cooling towers. Timestamps: Brett's background [08:20] Definition of a cooling tower [16:20] Closed circuit cooler vs. evaporative condenser [21:34] Types of cooling towers with regards to air flow [24:40] Different materials of construction [28:27] Stainless steel [35:00] Importance of communication with new customers [46:40] Fiberglass [48:15] Quotes: "The startup and commissioning of a new unit is the most critical time" "We are trying to educate everyone on the importance of planning ahead" "You've got to know the materials, the construction, and the equipment that you are dealing with" Links Mentioned: White Rust Bulletin Rising Tide Mastermind

Ep 136136 The One About The Mastermind Group

Last January, I started a group called The Rising Tide Mastermind. You probably have noticed that I've mentioned it quite a few times on the podcast. The fact of the matter is, I want to get the word out about this group. I can say that it has been transformational for its members. And me too! Many of you in the Scaling UP! Nation! have asked questions about The Rising Tide Mastermind by going to our website and submitting your inquiry. The majority of questions hub around what the group does, and what you get out of it. I could easily answer these questions for you on a podcast episode, but instead of me answering them, I've enlisted some help. Today's conversation is all about what it is like to be a member of The Rising Tide Mastermind, from the perspective of four members of the group. Join me as I ask your questions to Mark Lewis, Conor Parrish, Eric Russo and Brian Fisk. Quotes: "We are fortunate to have a diversity of thought in this group." "The Rising Tide Mastermind Group is showing us that our good is good, but it can be better." "Ultimately, in The Rising Tide Mastermind Group, we have a highly functioning team who are bringing up problems, addressing them, holding themselves accountable, and developing themselves. It's a great format for any team that wants to achieve their goals." "There is a clear structure on every call. We know what to expect every week, we follow it, and it keeps us on track." "This is a genuine group of people getting together for a common goal that is not financial profit; it's self-betterment." Timestamps: What is a mastermind? Ep 135135 The One with Adam Lean

How do you know how well you are doing if you don't measure it? Ok, how about this... How would you know who was winning if they dint keep score? Now try this: How do you know how you are doing if you aren't keeping score? And the better question is: how do you get better if you don't know to get better? I am talking about metrics. Metrics is how we can keep score on everything we do. If it has and input and an output, you can measure it. But the thing is, most of us don't measure anything. How long does it take you to service and account, run a test, write a report, or sale a new customer? Peter Drucker said "What get's measured get's improved." So, if we aren't measuring, we don't have the structure to improve. One of the things we need to measure in business is our business. The is a limitless supply of items we can measure in business. But measuring them is only step one. Know what to do with that data and then how to know you are improvement is what is needed. I'm guessing you are like me and you use a handful of metrics. But what about the ones you don't know to use because you've never heard of them. Those could be the ones that solve that problem you are dealing with. IF you don't know what they are, you cannot benefit from them. That's why I partner with people that know more than I do. Napoleon Hill in Think and Grow Rich mentioned how Henry Ford admitted under oath that he didn't know everything he needed to know about business. But he had access to those people he needed to help him fill in the gaps. What are your gaps? How will you fill them in? Having a partner like Mr. Ford alluded to is key. Today I talk with one of those partners,Adam Lean of The CFO Project. Adam lets us know what we should be thinking about when it comes to tracking how we are doing in business. Many have asked me about how they can find someone to help them in particular areas like: Financial (CFO) Technical Virtual assistance Insurance And the list goes on... I and the Scaling UP! H2O team have partnered with individuals and companies we trust and can help you with your questions. Remember, Henry Ford didn't know everything, he just knew who had the information he needed when he needed it. Isn't it time you started thinking like Mr. Ford? Go to scalinguph2o.com/ta to find a trusted advisor to help you today. Timestamps: Hear more about Adam's background [08:48] At what point does a business need a CFO? [29:30] Important metrics for businesses to track [41:10] Where to start learning more about your financials [45:11] Lightning round questions [47:40] Quotes: "More often than not accounting is just looking at what happened, not how to be proactive to make something happen." - Adam Lean "Fifty percent of all small businesses will fail within the first five years. It's because they did not focus on the right things that matter to have a profitable business." - Adam Lean "Most business owners are very busy and are focused on the day to day operations because that is what they enjoy doing. In order to stay in business you've got to focus on the most important things needed to have a profitable business which turns into cash flow." - Adam Lean "Imagine going to a baseball game and you don't know what the score is. So many people run their businesses that way and they simply don't realize how much that information can lead to better decisions" - Adam Lean Connect with Adam Lean: LinkedIn: in/adamlean Schedule a time to talk to Adam! I am always looking for ways to find out what I don't know I don't know. The problem with that is you don't know what you don't know, you know... For this reason, I try to put myself in situations to force what I don't know to become apparent to me. Some of the ways I do this is: Reading Going to events Listening to podcasts Participating in mastermind groups (like The Rising Tide Mastermind) Working with a personal coach Having others hold me accountable And the list goes on. Again, you don't know what you don't know, so you have to put yourself in places that help bring the unknown to light. As the host of Scaling UP! H2O, I am very aware that there is a lot to know about running a podcast. And, there is a plethora of stuff I don't know. So, in following my advice I do all of the above. About a year ago, I was at a podcasting event called Podcast Movement. It was a convention about podcasting. And boy, did I learn that I didn't know a lot of things! During one of the breakout sessions I went to attend a session on promoting your podcast through social media. It should have been named how to use LinkedIn better. Because it was all about LinkedIn. I'm not sure I would have attended it if it was called that. During that session, the presenter shared some fantastic tips about social media but specifically LinkedIn. Today's show is all about that session I attended and have been practicing from that time. Here are the tips he gave during the session: Many in the Scaling UP! Nation have asked me how to expand their network of contacts. I believe that today's episode will not only answer that question, but it will also help you polish your online presence. 132 Pinks and Blues 12 Week Year

132 Pinks and Blues: 12 Week Year Episode 132: Show Notes As you know, I love to make goals. I love achieving those goals even more. At a very early age, I learned how to stretch myself to accomplish things I wanted to do. However, it wasn't until later in life that I learned tools to help me be more efficient at reaching those goals. Last January, I started a Mastermind Group called The Rising Tide Mastermind. I am pleased to report it is a huge success. We have two full groups and a waiting list for another two groups. If you are interested in learning if this is the right fit for you, click here. In the Rising Tide Mastermind, we expand our knowledge and help each other achieve our goals more efficiently. We use each other's past experiences to give advice. We act as a sounding board to help vet out ideas. We hold each other accountable to do what we say we are going to do. We read topical books to help expand our minds and make us better. One of these books was the 12-Week Year written by Brian Moran. It not only teaches you how to create your goals, but it also teaches you how to plan and execute those goals. I was introduced to this book about two years ago when my business coach Tim Fulton recommended it as a part of our one to ones. A one to one is where you get together with a coach and solve issues. This is something I offer as a part of the Rising Tide Mastermind. The book does a great job of giving you a complete process around your goals. Here are the eight elements of the book: Vision: A compelling vision creates a clear picture of the future. Planning: An effective plan clarifies and focuses on the top priority initiatives and actions needed to achieve the vision. Process control: A set of tools and events that align your daily actions with the critical actions in your plan. Measurement: Lead and lag indicators that provide comprehensive feedback necessary for informed decision-making. Time use: Using your time with clear intention is a must. Accountability: Accountability is ultimately ownership. It is a character trait, a life stance, a willingness to own actions and results, regardless of the circumstances. Commitment: Keeping your promises to others, build strong relationships, and keeping promises to yourself builds character, esteem, and success. Greatness in the moment: The results are not the attainment of greatness, but simply confirmation of it." Join me as a try my best to give you the in's and out's of this "game-changer" book when it comes to goals. If you would like a copy of this book, please go to http://scalinguph2o.com/12weekyear .
