Ep 10010 The One with Jim Lukanich
On today's episode we welcome Jim Lukanich, a former AWT board member, he is a Certified Water Technologist (CWT) and the director of applied technology with U.S. Water. Jim won the Ray Balm Memorial Water Treater of the Year award in 2008. Jim describes himself as a short guy, about 59 years old, he runs, bikes and swims and just happens to be a water treater. Jim has been in the water treatment industry since 1981, he comes with a great deal of experience over the years and he has a big interest in microbiology and chemistry. Jim and his wife, alongside their nine rescue cats and two rescue dogs live in Grapevine, Texas. In this episode we're going to talk a little bit about closed loop systems, what you need to know and how they are the step child of the water treatment community. Jim Lukanich also joins us to share some need-to-know things about water treatment. Closed Loop Systems The close loop is just as important as that cooling tower loop and you know what that tower looks like when you don't feed a microbiocide, well it's a lot easier to see, of course we've got a more dynamic system with the cooling tower and sunlight might be getting in but we have things that are growing in the close loop as well. Give the closed loop the respect that it deserves and give your profession the respect that it deserves. If you are going to take care of a customer's systems, make sure that you're completely taking care of all of the customer's systems. Treat for all four areas of water treatment: scaling, corrosion, microbial fouling and taking the dirt and debris out of the system. On today's episode we're talking a little bit about finance and how we manage things that go along with that. Feed Water Tanks and the Deaerators A feed water tank and a deaerator is exactly the same thing except for one difference; the difference is pressure. The feed water tank has no pressure whereas the deaerator does. The whole purpose for the feed water tank and the deaerator tank is to drive off oxygen and they do this with heat. You can only get water so hot before it does a phase change and it changes into steam. The way you get water hotter is you put it under pressure. We want to keep it in the water state but we want to put more BTU's in it, we want to get it hotter. So how do we do that? We can put more pressure to hold the water as water and not allowing it to convert into steam. A feed water tank can only get to 212 degrees and still be water but we'll have issues with cavitation. A deaerator can take it up to 240 or 250 degrees before it starts to boil because it's under pressure. The hotter it is the more we can drive off oxygen. Key Points: Mike tells us how he works with multiple clients, giving all his clients CFO-level expertise without them having to hire and pay for a full-time CFO. You are a heat transfer efficiency manager. Everything you do is a sub product from making sure the equipment you are treating is effective discharging that heat as efficiently as it possible can. If you do your job correctly, you are making sure that it is the most cost effective way of transferring that heat on the equipment that you're treating. If you are not doing your job correctly that heat has to transfer through some sort of insulator meaning that we have to flow more water through the system, meaning that we might have to use more energy in that system and it's not being effective. Your job above all else is heat transfer efficiency management. If we're heating something we're putting heat in and we're taking it to a place where we need it. still making sure we're managing all the transfer of that heat. where we're putting it in where we need it. When we're cooling, we're removing heat. We're taking the heat out of a place where we don't want it, we're flowing it through our equipment and we're discharging it to a place where we don't care about it, normally that's the atmosphere. Bruce earned his BS in Biology from Juniata College and holds the CWT (Certified Water Technologist) designation. In this episode Bruce is sharing with us how to get involved in associations such as AWT. He's also telling us what's going on in the association, what one can expect from the association, how he got involved and where he sees AWT going in the future. We also talk about water softeners and answer some listener questions in "Pinks and Blues." Water Softeners Water softening is a technique that serves the removal of the ions that cause the water to be hard (or form scale,) in most cases calcium and magnesium ions. Iron ions may also be removed during softening. A water softener is a unit that is used to soften water, by removing the minerals that cause the water to be hard. If you've ever taken a softener apart you'll notice that it has resin beads inside. The purpose of the resin beads is to provide an exchange surface for ion. The ions we're specifically talking about is calcium and magnesium. The resin is full of sodium and we're putting it online and we're putting hard water through it. This hard water contains calcium and magnesium and it's flowing through across the resin bead. The resin bead wants the calcium and magnesium so it spits off the sodium and collects the calcium and magnesium until there's no more sodium for it to trade. Once that happens, we start passing hard water again which isn't the purpose of the water softener. Now we have to go through the process of regeneration. The resin is also acting as a filter. In order to regenerate to softener you have to follow five steps. The first step is to backwash where we reverse the flow. The next step is brining, brine travels through the salt storage area up into the resin tank. Step three is the slow rinse, where we flush hard minerals and brine from the resin tank into the drain. The fourth step is the fast rinse, the same as the slow rinse, just faster. It packs down the resin beads to make sure there's no channeling. The final step is refilling the brine tank. Now that you have a water softener you have to make sure you test properly for it. Ep 14014 The One with Mike Standish
Our guest today is Mike Standish, co-founder of Radical Polymers. Mike has over 28 years experience in polymer additive design and development. Prior to forming Radical Polymers, Mike served in technical and business leadership roles within global, publicly traded chemical companies and is responsible for the development and patenting of industry leading polymers for use in the water treatment, oilfield and detergent industries. In this episode Mike will be talking about what we need to know about polymers and also how we can take all of those categories and lump them into three simple categories so we know what they do based on functional groups. And we talk about Stack Temperatures on boilers. Stack Temperatures If you're concerned with your boiler system in terms of efficiency, you need to record your stack temperatures. Stack temperatures is simply the temperature of the gas, the exhaust, after the heat goes through the boiler and exhausts out. There is a thermometer located on the stack to let us know what the temperature is. You are responsible for making sure you're taking care of the entire system. That stack temperature is a look inside that boiler to see how efficient you are. If you just get one stack temperature it's not going to tell you anything, over time, if you and your customer are recording those stack temperatures you'll be able to see if those temperatures are staying the same, getting hotter or if it's getting cooler. If it's getting cooler, it tells us that we're transferring more heat from the inside of those tubes to the outside where the the water is. That's good. If it's getting hotter, it tells us that there's something on those tubes that's insulating that heat inside that tube so we can't transfer it out. That might be an indication that we're starting to scale some ion inside the system. If we ran the proper test we should be able to look back and see exactly what's going on. If you don't keep track of your stack temperatures you're never going to know what they're telling you. 015 The One with Jack Walker
Our guest today is Jack Walker, CEO of WaterTech Specialties Incorporated. Jack is also one of the founders of The Association of Water Technologies. WaterTech is a family-owned and operated business. They pride themselves on the diversity of their customer base, from small family businesses to Fortune 100 companies. Truly, they are small enough to care and large enough to make a difference. In this episode we're talking about what changes Jack has seen throughout his lifetime, what it was like for him transitioning his company to his children and what he thinks about water treatment in general. We also talk about some things to think about when the season change and answer listener questions on "Pinks and Blues." Season Changes. When seasons start to change you need to look at making changes to your programs. For instance, chiller and cooling tower cleaning. If your customer doesn't have filtration on their cooling tower, they should be cleaning their cooling tower a minimum of twice a year. It's easier to keep a clean system clean than it is to clean up a dirty system. There has to be a synergy with mechanical i.e... cleaning and chemical. Whenever there is a season change it's also recommended that legionella testing be done. Any equipment upgrades or maybe you have to change some product dosing, you need to think of all those things next time you go to service your accounts, now that you're in a different weather pattern. 021 The One with James McDonald
Our guest today is James McDonald. James has been in the water treatment industry since 1997 and is a Chemical Engineer by degree with a Master's from the University of Louisville. After college, James worked for an environmental compliance company, doing environmental assessments for the likes of the FAA and various army bases. Later James went on to work for Crown Solutions and today is also a much loved committee chair at the Association of Water Technologies (AWT). Interestingly, after many years at Crown Solutions, his next job at Chem Aqua, was discovered via a LinkedIn advertisement pop-up seeking a Corporate Engineer. Most of you out there are on LinkedIn and LinkedIn is probably dominated in the water technology community by James McDonald. James spends a lot of time on social media, specifically his LinkedIn page. But when we have so much work to do already, is social media really worth it and what are the rewards? James loves the work he does and loves sharing it with other people, so today we hear James' story, his role in the AWT, how LinkedIn has helped him connect hundreds of water treaters around the globe and why we should continue to keep learning a little bit every day and share our knowledge even more. Take a listen! We also answer questions from listeners on Pinks and Blues. This person just switched hardness test manufacturers and the softener used to be soft all the time with the old manufacturer. Now it's hard all the time. So is something wrong with the softener or with the test kit? Here at Blackmore Enterprises, we had that exact same thing happen. We were using manufacturer A and the softener was soft all the time. Then we switched to manufacturer B and it was soft some of the time, but a lot of the times we were getting that red tinge to the hardness test, and as those of you know out there in the ScalingUP! Nation, a soft sample is nice and blue and if it has a red color to it, then that indicates hardness and then we add the EDTA to it as a titrant until it grabs all that hardness and then turns it blue. So in a softener situation, as soon as we put the buffer in there and the indicator in there, we want that sucker to be nice and blue. Well, we thought that the softener was malfunctioning, and it actually was. The only reason we found that out was because the test that we then started buying with manufacturer B actually was able to test to a smaller degree, less than a ppm. The other test was only testing down to 2 or 3 ppm and we actually worked with somebody and we sent those off and actually had an independent lab measure those using a different method and we actually found that out, that one of the test manufacturers was able to get that lower. So it might be your tests are working fine, but they're only working in the limits that they are able to work in. What we did when we did that, we found out that we were actually putting hard water in when we thought we were putting soft water in with the other manufacturer, Manufacturer A, and that actually explained some of the readings that we were getting where we were losing alkalinity on occasion and things like that. The water was still clean, but everything didn't add up and then we found that when we were testing with this lower range test kit that we were actually leaking over some hardness. So I say this because the boilers, in order to be soft, need to be less - actually I think it's supposed to be less than half a ppm. So if your test kit's only testing 2 or 3 when it says it's soft, that's several times higher than half a ppm. So make sure you know what your test kit is actually doing and even in the same manufacturers, they have different ranges. So if one drop equals 10 parts, that's probably not good when you're titrating. That's probably not good enough for a softener. You probably want to figure out either how to change the sample size, or maybe change the test kit so you can get that to a really fine amount. But then also realize that your test that you're using may not go as low as you think it goes. Trace, what do you do for fun? I am a scuba dive instructor. That is my passion. I absolutely love being under water. It is the most therapeutic thing that l can think of. Underwater you can fly around like Superman. You want to go up, go up. You want to go down, go down. You can bank left, bank right, it's totally awesome. I love it so much, and you out there in the ScalingUP! Nation know that one of my passions is teaching, so I actually teach scuba diving to other people and try to get them to enjoy it as much as I do. Teaching scuba diving has made me a better instructor when it comes to water treatment, because when you're teaching somebody that they're not going to die, you learn how to deal with people at a different level. Because everybody's scared that there's no air underneath that water, and you've got to convince them that if an emergency or if a situation happens under water, you can deal with it unde

023: The One That Could Save Your Life
Our guest today is Lt. Rob Pendleton of the Snellville, GA Police Department. Snellville, GA is located about 35 miles north of Atlanta, GA. In the aftermath of the Las Vegas shootings, we are all asking ourselves what we can do. Many cannot think of a good answer to that question. It is my hope that we can take the information discussed in today's episode and keep ourselves safer and more aware. Lt. Pendleton has spent his adult life learning about how to keep others safe at his own peril. In this episode he condenses years of experiences, training and reading into real life information that we can use to keep ourselves safe and think through any emergency situations. 024 The One With All the Questions
It's been a while since it was just the two of us on an episode. To fix that, I am only answering questions from the Scaling UP! Nation, for the whole episode. No guest, no rant from the host, just your questions. Truly, the show for you, by you. LSI, RSI, PSI Can you tell us more about LSI, RSI and PSI? (1:04) LSI, RSI and PSI are all scaling indices. Each tells us whether the water is scaling or non-scaling. Not if the water is scaling or corrosion. ALL water is corrosive. In 1936, Wilfred Langelier developed a calculation for predicting the pH at which water is saturated with calcium carbonate called pHs. The "Saturation pH" is the first step in all scaling indices. Saturation pH (pHs): 12.3-(log CaH + log Malk + (0.025xC˚) - (0.011x√)

025 The One On Insurance
Our guest today is Mike Highum, Vice President of McGowan Insurance Group. McGowan is a trusted provider of insurance and risk management products and services across the United States. McGowan Insurance Group just received the AWT Supplier of the Year for 2016. Specialty protection includes Primary and Excess Liability, Pollution Liability, Professional/E&O, Executive Liability, Workers Compensation, Property and Fleet coverages. Complete risk analysis, loss prevention and claims management, as well as consulting services, are also provided. McGowan incorporates a collaborative approach that emphasizes client educational, along with delivering meaningful resources to equip clients with the necessary tools to manage risk. During the last few weeks I've had multiple people in the water treatment industry asking me questions about insurance, so I thought to bring in the professional. In this episode we're talking about what we should be thinking about when it comes to insurance and liability to protect not only ourselves but also our business. Why would we talk about insurance on ScalingUP? Scaling UP! is not just water treatment and chemistry. It's about all things that have to come into play for us to have a successful water treatment business. Unfortunately, there's liability out there and we cannot protect ourselves from all liability. That's why we have insurance. As a employee you will think, "If the company does well, I'll do well" or "If I know more about the company and what they have to go through then I can do better job." During this interview, think in this mindset and think how you can be a better water treater tomorrow than you are today, knowing more about your company's liability risk. Insurance is not the sexiest topic however it's something that every business needs to have and it's one of the things, as a business owner, you need to know about. Can I get continuing education points for my CWT? That's my number one question! The answer is no, however, "we're working on it" is really the right answer. Based on your interest on getting continuing education points, I did speak to the education committee. The issue is that they don't know how to track it, meaning they don't know how they prove that the listener actually listened to it? I will say that the podcast is a newer format for the education committee and they may not be totally familiar with that. I'm going to ask you to help me help you with this question and the Scaling UP! Nation! can come up with a way that the Certification Committee feels comfortable issuing these points. If you have any ideas, let me know. On an earlier show you mentioned resin cleaning, how do you do that? I believe that show was the one I did with Bruce Ketrick and in the intro I spoke on water softeners and did a very brief operational explanation and then I went into some brief trouble shooting. There's not really a simple answer to that, the simplest way to do that is to use some sort of resin cleaning product and put that into the brine tank so that you have that going into every brining cycle and that will help clean up the resin. To back up even more, what I'm talking about here is iron fouling and if I remember the episode, I was talking about the valance and that sodium has a +1 charge, calcium and magnesium have a +2 charge. The way we get the calcium magnesium off the resin with a +1 charge is that we put so much sodium in there that the resin starts getting rid of the calcium magnesium because we faked it out to think it had a higher charge. If we have iron on the resin with a +3 charge, sodium is not going to go in there and remove the iron that's in that resin hole, so how do we remove it? The resin cleaner should help promote getting some of that iron out, it won't get all of it but it will help with some. My advice is not to wait for the resin to become fouled but to start using that resin to keep that resin cleaner longer. Offline cleaning is when you put a whole bunch of cleaner in with the resin and then you have to agitate everything. So basically, you take a PVC wand and hook it up to a compressor and bubble through a very, long, tedious, boring process. You can manually clean the resin using that airline that I just described, or you can put a little bit of resin cleaner in as an ongoing basis and/or you can send the resin sample off to be analyzed. It's sometimes easier to just replace the resin rather than cleaning it. You hear a lot about people job hopping these days, especially millennials. Do you have any statistics that talk specifically about how long people stay in the water treatment industry? I want to say I don't have specific statistics that I have taken myself but I have heard Colin Frayne talk on this topic and he has said that throughout his career he has found, he's a consultant an contributor to AWT and has been in water treatment for a while, that if somebody gets into water treatment and they stay for two years, they're

Ep 26026 The One That's All About the CWT
Currently on the show we are doing a multi-episode series on getting your Certified Water Technologist (CWT) designation. The CWT is the highest professional designation in the water treatment industry and is administered by the Association of Water Technologies (AWT). A CWT exam is a rigorous, 200-question, four-hour exam that water technologists can take after five years of experience in the industry. It may sound daunting, but having a CWT is a sure way to bump up your career and demonstrate your knowledge, ethics and commitment to the industry. In this episode, we are going to be exploring all things CWT together with Angela Pike, self-proclaimed queen and Senior Service Manager at AWT. Angela works directly with the committee responsible for the CWT and has since become a guru on the entire AWT process. Together, we'll be delving into the reasons why you should get your CWT, how to get it, how to study for it, how to pass the exam (not test,) as well as what to do if you do not pass the exam and how to re-certify. We're going to be providing some tips and advice to help you prepare and pass the exam the first time around. By the end of this episode, you'll have a new perspective on the value of a CWT certification and how to best go about the process. Take a listen! [24:46] Take the CWT Challenge: If you are going to be in this industry, why not be the best in this industry? I challenge you to start on the journey to getting your CWT. You may not get it tomorrow and it may be 5 years from now. The point is you are on your way to getting it. You've started. And one thing is for sure, you will never finish anything you never start. On last week's episode I asked you to go to the Scaling UP! Nation's Linked IN page and let everybody know the date you will take the exam. If you haven't done that, I urge you to do so. Be sure to sign up for the 5 tips to help you with the examination. https://scalinguph2o.com/cwt. Making your job easier: The mechanical is usually a place that has horrible light. Our tests results are based on interpretation of color changes that require good light. If you don't have good light where you are, bring the good light with you. We have solved this issue with a small, portable and cost effective rechargeable LED light. It is small enough to fit in your tests kit without taking up too much space and provides good quality light (6500K.) After mentioning this light on show number 24, I have received dozens of questions about it. 029 The One with the Submarine Captain
Our guest today is Cpt. David Marquet of The United States Navy. David (now retired), was the Commander of the nuclear submarine Santa Fe – probably the most amazing job in the world! (in my opinion) In addition to commanding nuclear powered submarines, David is also the author of Turn The Ship Around, which was written in 2013 and tells the remarkable true story of how David was able to turn the lowest performing submarine into the highest performing evaluation in the history of The Navy. David was able to do this by transforming his team with what he calls a "leader-leader" mentality, rather than the pervasive "leader-follower" mentality, which is typically how The Navy had always gotten things done! In this episode, we learn more about this model of leadership and how you can transform a team by cultivating the creativity and independent thinking of its members. This is a book about how you can apply the 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People on an organizational level and why the legacy of a true leader is to bring out the leader in everyone else. 031 The One with Mark Lewis
The most requested guest in Scaling UP! History! (Mark was the one doing all the requesting) It can be lonely out there as a water treater. Having friends you can count on is a must. Mark Lewis is that kind a friend to me. After meeting Mark over 12 years ago, we have encouraged each other to be better water treaters. In this episode, we are going to learn how Mark became a water treater. We will also hear how he started volunteering with the Association of Water Technologies and all the opportunities he was able to take advantage of because of this. Mark will let us know how everyone should approach AWT's Technical Training and what the difference is between the Fundamentals and Applications Training and The Water Treatment Training. We will even talk a little about chillers. In fact, you will hear Mark answer questions I didn't even ask. This is sure to be one of your favorite episodes as we talk a bit about everything. And, since I know you will be left wanting more, I have invited Mark back for another episode. Please enjoy my interview with Mark Lewis, CWT. 036 The One That Teaches You How to Lead When You're Not In Charge
My guest today is one of the pastors of my church, Clay Scroggins. Clay wrote a book called "How to Lead When You're Not In Charge, Leveraging Influence When You Lack Authority." The book is unique in several ways, it is the story of how he began to lead when he wasn't in charge and, the reason that really caught my attention, it is a book written for all of us. Not just the leaders who are already in charge. The wisdom in this book will allow you to start taking charge of things that you may not even realize you are in charge of. It will help you stand out and grab the attention of those who are in charge. Simply put, this book will help you advance your position regardless of where you are in the organization. As Clay says so very well, "you don't have to have authority of something to be in charge of something." All of this being said, Clay is a pastor so there is some scripture in this book. He draws reference from the bible to help explain his ideas. If you don't like that part, don't let that bother you because the "nuggets of gold" you will find in this book are ones that I have never seen presented to an audience other than existing leaders. Folk's this book will help your career and your relationship with your boss! Please enjoy my interview with: Clay Scroggins. BTW, I mention a lot of books on my show. Chances are, you listen to this podcast while driving. So why not read that way? Try Audible!, It's safer. It is also the only way I can read all these books with my job demands. Ep 37037 The One That's All About White Rust
Today on the show, we welcome Chris Nagle. Chris has a background in water treatment and today works at Evapco, one of the largest cooling tower manufacturers in the world. Have you ever heard the term white rust? It is a problem that many water treaters face and is the topic of this episode today. In a nutshell, white rust is the galvanizing coming off of a cooling tower. Galvanizing is a coating of zinc over the steal surface, which is done so that the zinc corrodes instead of the steel below it. White rust is the premature corroding of that zinc and this is a serious problem, one that it often blamed on the water treater. Evapco have been doing an amazing job at teaming up to gather and share information on white rust and how we can help solve this issue in new ways, together. Chris has a unique perspective and a wealth of insight on the topic of white rust and today, he explains the process of galvanizing and passivation and the challenges white rust has placed on the industry today. Chris shares some of the fascinating things Evapco are doing to help solve this issue and provides some great advice for water treaters on how to prevent and manage white rust. 038 The One That Shows Us How to Run Our Business w/ Mark Winters
Being a water treater, that's easy… Well, maybe not. However, I have found it easier than running my own business. As with everything, you don't know what you don't know. So, when I learn something, that I didn't know, and it works, I want to share it with you. About 3 years ago, we started using a program at my company called EOS, The Entrepreneur Operating System. This system was introduced in a book called Traction by Gino Wickman. Gino explains that EOS is like an operating system you would use for you computer, like Windows. Your company is the program that will run on that operating system, like Word (yes, I am a PC guy.) The EOS system has five books within the series. On today's show, we have the author of the second book in the series "Rocket Fuel," Mark Winters. Mark is one of the best facilitators of the EOS system out there! He explains EOS and how different people in our company have different talents. By properly utilizing these talents we can energize our company with "Rocket Fuel" to get to the next level and beyond. 039 The One That Will Change Your Sales Department
Today on the show we welcome Justin Roff-Marsh, Founder of Ballistix and author of The Machine: A Radical Approach to the Design of the Sales Function. When was the last time you thought about sales? About how it is managed and who does what job? And whether the method you're using is really the best method? As water treater's, our job is to go out there and sell what it is that we do. But if you really look at the way we do sales and the systems in which we do sales, it hasn't changed all that much since the dawn of time! Yet everything else has... Justin is someone who has re-designed the sales process by taking a whole new approach to the way in which companies sell. In his book, he delves deep into the world of sales functions; looking at how and why we've been approaching sales in the same way for so long and how you can break these models a part and improve them to benefit of your own sales practice today. In this episode, we chat to Justin about the key concepts in his book, about some of the things we take for granted in sales and what we can do better in this field. 041 The One with Your Nerdy Best Friend
I don't have time to do the things I need to do! Ever heard this? I'm sure you've not just heard it, you've said it! And you probably heard someone tell you to work smarter not harder. This advice sounds great, but how do you do it? What is "working smarter? I say working smarter is letting someone or something do your work for you. Think of how long calculations used to take in the dawn of the space program. Now how long do they take? The equations are solved almost instantly because of technology. So, our question is how do we let technology work for us thereby making us smarter workers? Well, that is today's show, we are going to learn how to find repeatable tasks that technology can do for us; freeing us up to do other things. Pretty smart, huh? Our guest today is my Nerdy Best Friend, Beth Ziesenis. Beth makes a career out of finding technology such as apps to do the work we shouldn't be doing. Beth was a speaker at the Association of Water Technologies 2017 Convention. She has also written several books and appeared on other podcasts and programs. 042 The One That Helps Us Understand Our Test Kits
The topic that surrounds most of the question I receive are about tests kits and testing in general. Ever since I shared with the Scaling UP! Nation what was in my personal test kit, these types of questions keep coming. So, I thought rather than me answer these questions, I will ask a guest to answer them for us. Our guest today is Harland Pond of AquaPheonix Scientific. Harland manufactures the test kits now, but he once used them in the field as a fellow water treater. This gives Harland a great perspective on how we actually use our test kits. I am sure you are going to get many tips and ideas from this interview with Harland Pond. Harland's career passions have always centered on the junction of technology and business, using customer insights to find creative innovations for organizations, markets and products. Currently he is the VP of sales, marketing and business development for AquaPhoenix Scientific, providing custom product and service solutions in the water testing and science education space. Previously he worked for Grundfos Pumps in a variety of roles in Business Development, product management and most recently as VP of Industry for the Americas. He began his career at Ashland, as a water treater and market manager. Harland holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from BYU and an MBA from Lehigh University - focused on corporate entrepreneurship. He dedicates his time for adventures and exploration with his wife Amy, and three children, Abby, Grace and James. Any remaining free time is spent in broad spectrum of too many hobbies and interests, but always focused on learning something new. Timestamps How to send in questions to Trace [0:01:03] Coming Soon! 043 The One with the WaterCycle Guy
043 The One with the WaterCycle Guy Episode 43: Show Notes Did you know we all have something in common? Well, I'm willing to bet that we have many things in common but the one I want to focus in on is we all start something new as someone new to starting that something. I know that is not very profound, but it's true. In my career I have been concerned about how someone would view my presentation or recommendation because I was: too new, too young, too... I absolutely love hearing from the Scaling UP! Nation about how this show has inspired people to: try something new, change up the status quo and ask why. When we know why something does what it does, we change our role from a task doing to a tool master. When we have command over the tools that we use, we become exceptional water treaters. If you have listened to Scaling UP! before, you know I believe it takes the gift of others investing in you that will lead you to a successful future. Today I interview someone who has really shape the water treatment industry. Most likely, he has had a hand in all of the products you use. If you use a controller, he has had a hand in creating some of the algorithms the controller uses. He has authored many papers and spoken at many venues. But here's the thing, when he started he was: too new, too young, too... After knowing all these accolades, you are ready to listen to him, right? My guest today is Rob Ferguson, of French Creek Software. Rob founded French Creek Software where he developed several programs. The one you are most likely familiar with is WaterCyle. WaterCycle is a modeling software that allows you to theoretically test your product in a simulated environment. Rob was new when he started as water treater. He was new when he started WaterCylce. If there is one thing I hope you get out of this episode is that we all start at the same place and we never get where we are going alone. Rob explains how many have helped him become what he is today. Join me as I interview Rob Ferguson. More about Rob Ferguson? Rob Ferguson began modeling corrosion, mineral scale solubility, scale formation, and scale and corrosion control in 1974 and continues to be a major contributor to the practical application of physical chemistry to identifying and solving industrial water treatment challenges. Major career accomplishments include: developing the first successful ultra-low dosage treatment approaches for scale control in high volume utility once through cooling systems (1974). designing and implementing the first real-time microprocessor controlled scale inhibitor controller (1984). making advanced physical chemistry and laboratory study results to water treatment professionals through software available in a user friendly, visual format. Developing a user friendly system for evaluating scale formation and control under extreme conditions. Rob wrote much of the software in use today for cooling water, reverse osmosis, and oil field chemistry. He co-founded French Creek Software in 1989 and has presented and published papers at AWT, NACE, the IWC, CTI, ACS, AWWA, AMTA and in many trade journals. His motto is "Physical Chemistry for Fun and Profit." He opened a scale and corrosion laboratory in 2014 to develop and refine inhibitor performance data and other work not being published by the major service companies and inhibitor synthesizers. Rob began advocating for change in the approach to evaluating and resolving lead and copper contamination of potable water in 1995 with the release of a municipal water modelling systems, though technology publications, and through editorials such as the UltraPure Water guest editorial "Paradigm Change Could Drive Pb and Cu Crisis Resolution." Rob was educated at the US Naval Academy and University of Minnesota and received a BS in Biochemistry and Microbiology in 1971. Rob worked in research, marketing, and software development for several major water treatment service companies prior to cofounding French Creek Software in 1989, Rob received the Association of Water Technologies Ray Baum Water Technologist of the Year award in 2017 for technology contributions to the industry and the association. French Creek was proud to be honored as the AWT Supplier of the Year in 2011. 044 The One With The Chick Fil A Guy
If you've listened to the show for any length of time, you know I love business! Due my love of business, I study businesses in how they conduct regular transactions and issues. This can sometimes get on my wife's nerves since I'm always turning every customer service experience into a learning opportunity, just ask her... In my observations, I have noticed that successful businesses seem to rally around a core set of values that you can see throughout their entire company. I've also noticed the opposite is true when companies lack a set of values that are followed by all. Just think back to when you had an issue with something at a place of business, it's impossible not to see how core values are applied if you look for it. Observing this is one of my favorite things to do. One of my best examples of this came from my service manager, Chris. He took his father-in-law out for dinner and his father-in-law wanted to order a meatloaf sandwich. The waiter told him NO, he could not order that because it wasn't on the menu. However, meatloaf and bread were on the menu, just not together. This was an example of enforcing rules that did not give the customer want he wanted. And the kicker is putting meatloaf between two pieces of bread would not have cost the company anything. In this situation, what do you think the company's core values were? If they had anything to do with the customer, they weren't followed. If they did, they weren't trained or at the very least followed by all. I'm not going to tell you the company that owned the meatloaf saga, but I will use the story to introduce a company that I think gets core values right, each and every time. That company is Chik Fil A. If you have ever been into a Chick Fil A I know you were greeted properly and told that it was their pleasure for them to serve you. I also know you got the best chicken sandwich put on this earth! In case you didn't know, I'm am a fan of Chick Fil A. They are a staple here in the south. In fact, they have built much of the Atlanta landscape. And truth be told, I eat there probably more than I should. But when I'm there I'm conducting research, at least that's what I tell my wife... My guest today is Daniel Perry, Owner of the Lawrenceville/316 Chick Fil A. His store is practically in walking distance from my office and we have become friends over the years. During this time, I have seen him, and his team demonstrate how much they care about their guests, handle complaints and reach out to the community. Simply put, I have seen them LIVE their core values in everything they do. It's my hope you will be inspired to work on your core values from this episode. Ep 46046 The One About Phosphate Testing
If you have ever listened to my show, you know I am totally dependent on your suggestions on what I should be talking about. Today's show is straight from the "Scaling UP! Mailbag!" You ask for it, so here it is… Phosphate… (Tap...Tap) Is this thing on? Yes, I said Phosphate. Believe it or not, questions around phosphate top my list of the most asked questions from the Scaling UP! Nation! So, who am I to argue. Phosphate it is... I have also taken this opportunity to play "Mythbuster" Scaling UP! Style. A few months ago, several blogs and listservs started talking about using a particular device used for digestion in phosphate testing. The device is called the SteriPen and it was developed for outdoor lovers to sterilize their drinking water. Many water treaters have found that it could be used as the ultra violet source in the phosphate digestion process (azole too.) The aforementioned post alluded that the SteriPens would not work for this purpose. Join me as I take the Nation! though how I explored these questions myself. You will hear how I take my own advice of, "Trust but verify" (I think Ronald Reagan said that) when you get water treatment opinions. I also get a little help from my friends (John Lennon said this one) by interviewing people that have been using the SteriPen and who developed the SteriPen. 047 The One with the Guy Who Writes About Water
I think it is safe to say that the majority of the Scaling UP! Nation! is on one or more social media platforms. I try to post news about my upcoming podcast on social media, mainly LinkedIn. Social Media is how we stay connected in today's world. In fact, many of you found out about the Scaling UP! podcast from LinkedIn. In an effort to stay sharp for the Scaling UP! Nation!, I try to read as much as I can. From books to articles, you just never know what fodder is out there that you can turn into a good episode. During my assimilation of this data, I ran across Jim Lauria on LinkedIn. Jim wrote a very intriguing article about Leonardo DaVinci and water. It was fascinating. I enjoyed not only the article but the way that in which Jim wrote it. This led me to start reading other articles written by Jim. If you are connected with me on LinkedIn, you have seen me share many of them. Since connecting on LinkedIn, Jim and I have shared several insights and conversations. Jim is a renaissance man when it comes to water, in his own right. On today's episode Jim shares with us not only his passion for writing about water but also some tips about promoting yourself on LinkedIn. We even sneak in a few words on "Mind Mapping." Do you even know what that is? I though I was the only one… Jim Lauria is Vice President of Sales & Marketing for Mazzei Injector, a fluid design company that manufactures mixing and contacting systems. He is a leader in the water treatment field with a proven track record of revenue growth, profit improvement and new business development. Since graduating with a Bachelor of Chemical Engineering degree from Manhattan College, Jim has traveled the world benchmarking the best water management practices. He lives in San Francisco with his wife Laurie Lauria, who fills his life with love, laughter, and alliteration.
