100 The 100th One Episode 100: Show Notes Can you believe it, I can't! This is Scaling UP! H2O's 100th episode! If you are a listener of the show, you have heard my voice 100 times. Unbelievable... Hosting this podcast has become a passion of mine. Several years ago, I didn't even know what a podcast was, now I'm celebrating 100 episodes of having a podcast. During the past 100 episodes, I have learned a great deal about several things. On this episode we are going to celebrate not only what was done over the last 100 episodes, but what we learned, like these: The importance of having community in our industry? a.) I don't think I can take credit for it, but I have seen a shift in how water treaters reach out to fellow water treaters. Before the show, I didn't think crossing company lines was a common practice. But since the show started, I have had several individuals let me know that they have befriended other water treaters and they have both benefited from the new relationship. The podcast gave creation to The Scaling UP! Nation! The Scaling UP! Nation! has become the community for industrial water treaters, and I think that is amazing. I am humbled to be the tribe leader of our Nation! Other people think there is a need for the podcast: a.) When I started on 4/4/2017, I would have been happy if my company's team would have listened to the show. To date we are over 10,000 listeners in over 64 countries and growing every day. If this show didn't fill a need, we wouldn't have numbers like that. GO Scaling UP! Nation! It's all about the guests: a.) 096 The One That Helps Introverts Episode 96: Show Notes Well, Kermit the Frog said It's not easy being green, but it's not easy being introverted either. It may be hard for the Scaling UP! Nation! To believe, but introducing myself in a crowdy room doesn't come naturally for me. Through the years I have been able to work of a few tricks that I do to help in this situation. I have also found that getting started is the hardest part for me. Once I get started, I'm OK. A family friend of mine, Donna Srader of The Texas Tech University Career Center has written a webinar series on this very issue. 089 The One That's All About Filming Amines (General) Episode 89: Show Notes This one is straight from the Scaling UP! H2O mailbag! I have received dozens of questions about filming amines after Episode 80, Filming Amines. In that episode, I shared with the Scaling UP! Nation! the paper I presented at the 2018 Association of Water Technologies Convention and Expo. In fact, after I presented this paper, several people came up to me with question about filming amines. So here is what I think is going on: We water treaters are used to doing our craft in a particular way (the way we are used to.) 077 Pinks and Blues Episode 77: Show Notes Water treaters run test. That's a fact. However, the tests should never run the water treater. How well do you know your tests? Do you know how they work? Do you know how to tell when your tests are "lying" to you? Many of you have written in asking about specific testing questions. Today's show will not only answer those questions but hopefully get you to start questioning every test that you run.

076 The One with the Consulting Client Episode 76: Show Notes Have you ever wondered what would happen if someone found out about your short comings? Maybe they could: expose you, take your business, tell your boss or even make fun of you. Or maybe they could help you overcome those short comings? Many get a frightened felling by the prospect of someone finding out we don't know something, or that we are not the best at a particular area. That's normal. The thing that makes someone get better at that area is what they do once they have that feeling. Don't let fear or pride get in the way of making yourself better. I've been in water treatment for well over 20 years. If there is one thing I can say for sure about our industry, it is people in our industry go out of their way to help others. Time and time again, I have seen competitors help a fellow competitor just because they asked. I can't say for sure, but I don't think this is true for other industries. So, the next time you are worried about not knowing something, remember this, there are people out there that want to help you better yourself and better the industry, don't let pride or fear get in the way of that. Now, you want to find out what you don't know you don't know; you have two options: 1. read about it, 2. ask someone about it. My preference has always been both. Reading about something allows me to start to know the topic better. Where working with someone allows me to use their experience to help me with my lack of experience. When you work with someone, they may charge you for their time and access to their expertise. If they do, the term we give them is a consultant, if they don't the term I give them is a mentor. 075 The One that's All About Corrosion Coupons Episode 75: Show Notes If you are an industrial water treater, most likely you have seen a corrosion coupon at some point. However, if you haven't, today's episode will teach you all about them. I remember a time when I placed an ad for my corrosion coupon lab in an industry magazine. After we created the layout for the ad, the sales rep called me to tell me I forgot the "coupon" in my graphic. The graphic I created featured 3 corrosion coupons. He wanted to know what discount (coupon) I was going to offer people who used my corrosion coupon lab. I thought that was funny. It also gave me the prospective that corrosion coupons tell you how much metal is being taken off of the system. Finding this information out quickly can save you a ton of money on your heat transfer equipment. So maybe the sales rep was on to something. Corrosion coupons are very inexpensive ways that you can measure metal lose in a system you are treating for corrosion protection. Because they are inexpensive and easy to use, you can use them to pro-activity make a change in your program based on their results. In my career, I have analyzed 1000's of corrosion coupons. Have you ever thought about what our water treatment control equipment allows us to do? Yes, it feeds our products and bleeds the system, but what it really does is allow us to go home! If we did not have something monitoring our program 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, we would have very different job. I don't know about you, but I don't want to sleep in a mechanical room! I'm willing to bet that when you think about public speaking, you get nervous or at least a bit uncomfortable. The great Google says it is one of the top fears that most of us share. And who can argue with Google? I remember the first time I gave a water treatment speech in front of some of my father's clients. It was not very good. In fact, it was downright bad. However, that was my first, not my last. To date I have spoken hundreds of times on water treatment topics. And... many actually pay me to do it (it's a good thing they didn't see that first presentation.) Don't ever make first into the last. I cannot tell you how many times I did not make a great presentation, but I can tell you that ever presentation I make is better than the one that came before it. One of my philosophies is "teach what you know." Which works out great for me because I have this podcast. I have always felt you know something better when you can teach it. As a teacher, you must be able to convey your point to who you are speaking with, anticipate their questions and make sure you increase the listening party's overall knowledge of the subject matter.
