S4 Ep 128128: The Reality of Human Trafficking with Alexandra Ford

E

Dr. Gertrude speaks with Alexandra Ford, a former trafficking victim turned activist, who after 10 years of personal hardships, recognized her experiences were actually human trafficking.Alexandra tells Dr. Gertrude about the importance of understanding human trafficking whether or not you have children. Hollywood has muddled the public perception of what human trafficking actually is and most people think it is only some version of Taken. When it comes to teaching children about consent and trafficking, the work begins early but maybe not as you’d expect. Alexandra advises that a wider understanding and normalization of consent is crucial. Not only does no mean no, but yes also means yes and within very specific situations. Alexandra also advises closely monitoring a child’s phone usage and how they navigate the digital realm. Having strict rules around phones and actually teaching children phone safety are helpful practices for instilling lasting digital safety habits. These habits will form trust between you and them, which will better equip them to trust themselves in avoiding potentially dangerous online situations in the future. For Alexandra the early years of motherhood have been complex, more like surviving than thriving, which is something that she accepts and wishes other moms knew they are allowed to feel. Her past traumas returned in unexpected ways. Empowered by her own trafficking experience, legal education, and advocacy work, Alexandra brings awareness to the reality of trafficking and how to counter shame and stigma in victims. She co-founded the advocacy group, Uprising, in Wyoming and her personal brand, The Laughing Survivor, in British Columbia. She is passionate about educating mothers on the importance of safety for children.Episode Outline: (04:12) Human trafficking is important to understand whether or not you have children(06:52) Alexandra shares her addiction and trafficking story(18:30) Shame, victim blaming, coercion, and consent(26:08) #1 myth of how trafficking happens(27:63) Best way to protect yourself and community: talk about consent(29:01) Children’s online safety and building cell phone trust (40:19) 3 practical examples of teaching consent(48:25) What rewrite the mother code means for Alexandra (53:50) ConclusionConnect with Dr. Gertrude Learn more on Dr. Gertrude’s websiteFollow Dr. Gertrude on InstagramStay in the loop and sign up to Dr. Gertrude’s newsletterConnect with AlexandraLearn more about The Laughing SurvivorFollow Alexandra on InstagramSign up for updates on Alexandra’s memoir releaseMentioned in this episode:Learn more about the 2024 Spring Equinox Self-Mothering Retreat at https://www.drgertrudelyons.com/spring-equinox-24

S3 Ep 9898: Dorsey Standish: From Corporate Ladder to Corporate Meditation Guru

E

As the mother of a newborn, Dorsey is rewriting many codes and making decisions based on what serves her best. Her partner and she live by the philosophy that a happy mother can serve her children best. This means rewriting codes around when it is best to return to work. For Dorsey, she was ready to travel and start working relatively soon after giving birth. This is because she feels her work feeds her soul. Again, this decision was a challenging one. Tears were shed, but she felt a shift by the third time she left for work-related business. For Dorsey, rewriting the Mot(her) code means turning on the light and looking at the code, even when it’s uncomfortable, while drawing on resources of positive connection and inspiration to rewrite and reframe the codes that are our operating systems. It’s not about being perfect. The idea is to  slowly shift every day to show up as a more healed version of yourself. S3 Ep 9797: Conversations with Elizabeth Tuazon: Pregnancy and Embracing Discomfort

E

Elizabeth is rewriting the Mot(her) Code to find her own path in the birthing process. She grew up with the narrative “go for the epidural” and use whatever technology is available to avoid the pain. However, confronted with her pregnancy, she is now asking more questions. Having visited a birthing center, she encountered the philosophy that women are stronger and more resilient than they have been led to believe. This statement was a revelation. It rang true to her and she knew she wanted to be a part of that mindset. Consequently, she plans on taking as little intervention as possible during birth. In general, she wants to rewrite the code that pregnancy and birth is something to overcome: as if it’s a burden or like a bad diagnosis. To Elizabeth, rewriting the Mot(her) means redefining, rediscovering, and writing her own definition of what it means to be a woman and a feminine presence in the world today. She’s looking at things with love (even critical love) while discovering what she would like to create while asking what it is that she is hungry to express, to become. Elizabeth ends the podcast episode with a beautiful lyrical performance. “I’ve always thought that women were the source of all creation.” Show highlightsThere are more birthing options available than women have been led to believePregnancy is viewed as a “problem” or “diagnosis” by the medical profession instead of viewing it as a positive choiceThe importance of making decisions for oneselfThe concept of the fourth trimester and envisioning a birthing and newborn baby phase that resonates with you Breastfeeding and everyone’s unsolicited opinion, for better or worse. The idea that a good mother “just knows how to do this”Mentioned in this episode:Learn more about the 2024 Spring Equinox Self-Mothering Retreat at https://www.drgertrudelyons.com/spring-equinox-24

Her book that focuses on a love story about our souls, taking back the magic, and getting to know the dead will be released this fall in September 2023.Motherhood is a challenging yet rewarding journey. As a form of meditation, some mothers pray the rosary to contemplate more on life and its mysteries. For today’s episode, we have Clark Strand and Perdita Finn of a community called ‘The Way of the Rose’ to enlighten us more about their community, their experiences, and everything about the rosary. A vision for a group of parents to support each other in the business of parenting through prayer25 years ago, Perdita, having two children, kept having a vision of a group that she refers to as “Mothers Without Borders” wherein parents get together to support each other in the business of parenting through prayer.Back then, she didn’t know how to make that vision happen but now, that group exists in the name of The Way of the Rose, which Clark and Perdita started 12 years ago. It is a nondenominational, fairly feral group devoted to the Earth, the lady by any name of one’s preference, and the rosary which is the group’s container.People in their group come from all different traditions and are of different ages. In fact, some grandmothers bring their grandchildren or vice versa. There are many young mothers who visit and join the group to pray the rosary together. Why is the rosary so ubiquitous? The rosary is a ubiquitous form of prayer and devotion and is popular among many religions worldwide. The rosary has a long history, dating back to the Middle Ages to count repetitions of prayers. In fact, every religion has a tradition of using beads for prayers even dating back to 120,000 years ago where bead-making was already done in Morocco. The rosary is a simple and accessible form of prayer that can be practiced by anyone, regardless of education or social status. It can be done anywhere, at any time, and only requires a set of prayer beads and the ability to recite a few prayers. Many believe that the rosary has many spiritual benefits, including strengthening one's faith, increasing devotion, and obtaining spiritual graces. It has become an integral part of religious traditions, with many families passing down the practice from generation to generation.Meditation and the hormone prolactin in the bodyAccording to Perdita, praying the rosary makes her feel better, similar to when she is nursing her child. The gesture of holding the bead is the gesture the baby makes when they’re first born and latching on to the mother’s chest. As the baby holds his or her mom’s breast, a hormone called prolactin lets down both in the mother’s body and in the child’s body to create that cocooned feeling of calm and peace. It’s similar to when birds sit on their eggs. The point of the rosary is to pray for our hearts desireMany people often pray the rosary with specific intentions and petitions in mind. Some pray as a form of meditation as the repetition of prayers and the use of prayer beads serve as a gesture of comfort and peace for them.As people recite their prayers and meditate, they tend to have a clear understanding and appreciation for life. Holding on to the rosary gives people immense hope that things are going to be better for them. For Perdita, she imagines filling her two children with prayers and that one day, they can pass that on as well. Praying the rosary, for Clark, has been a meditative practice which helps one contemplate as it was a tradition that’s been alive in the Catholic Church for centuries. The rosary is specifically designed by our medieval forebears to ease us into what some people call a liminal state – somewhere between dreaming awake in space in the middle of a visionary place where we get m
