Across cultures, these seasons are essential for accessing a different part of the self. Dr. Gertrude emphasizes the importance of balancing light and dark, like yin and yang. The darkness of the womb, ever-present in the feminine, contains potent knowledge for healing and growth. Society's overemphasis on light, or masculine, characteristics has led to imbalances. S5 Ep 146146: Balancing Career, Motherhood, and Values with Dr. Jessica Lederhausen

E

In this episode, I speak with Dr. Jessica Lederhausen, a dentist and public health advocate, about how she is rewriting her mother and grandmother codes, embodying her values, and publishing her recent book, Oral. Jessica’s journey of mothering is distinctly different from the norm. She embraces being different from what’s expected of a “normal” mom and imparts the importance of maintaining personal values to her children. Even as a grandmother, she fully embodies the role of grandmother that works for her, which isn’t the same as the stereotypical spoiling-the-grandchildren one!Jessica shares how she navigated the differing mother codes of Sweden and the U.S. We discuss what it’s like to grow up in a culture that doesn’t outwardly discuss values but picks them up by the behavior of the people around you. S5 Ep 145145: Trusting Intuition: Navigating Motherhood, Medical Decisions, and Personal Growth with Elizabeth Tuazon

E

In this episode, I welcome back Elizabeth Tuazon. We discuss her current stage of motherhood, how the universe always wants us to succeed, and her family’s upcoming transitions. With Elizabeth Tuazon’s daughter, Lyla Rose, now a year and one-month-old, I checked in with her for a motherhood update. Elizabeth shares how she celebrated her one-year anniversary of giving birth with a Montessori Walk Around the Sun. It was a beautiful time to reflect on the milestones and growth she and her family made in the last year. We then dive into the lessons learned by exercising our free will to make choices and question things, even things accepted as normal or standard, like what a pregnant woman is allowed to eat or why babies are required to have their iron tested. Elizabeth has two significant transitions ahead: an au pair and a doctoral program. Elizabeth’s willingness, grace, and curiosity with which she accepts newness and every step of motherhood never fails to amaze me. You’ll also hear about: (02:50) Motherhood update(08:15) Anniversary of giving birth(19:50) The lessons in choice(30:46) Preparing for an au pair(35:54) Beginning a doctoral programLyla Rose joins us briefly in the end, stay tuned!Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you listen to podcasts! Resources mentioned in the episode: 97. S5 Ep 144144: Honoring Vastness: Whales, Bees, and the Process of Becoming

E

In this solo episode, I discuss the importance of collective connection, working through a project's intense phases, and the wisdom shared by whales and bees. Following up on last month’s solo episode about being in the process of becoming, I’m now in the last big push of my book project, deep in the editing and writing. I share what’s felt extra challenging during this final phase, and how these lessons can apply across our lives, especially when we are new at something or close to completing a project.I return to the subject of whales in captivity as a metaphor for women within patriarchy and the lessons society is learning about why keeping whales in captivity and subjugating feminine power does not work. By rewriting the mother code, we can remember the possibilities of opening ourselves up to our vastness. I’m so grateful to be working from Ireland and share the importance of boundaries while getting through this final project stretch, especially in a new space. One special place I’ve had the opportunity to visit while here has been the bee beds. Their wisdom contains so many cosmic codes, the embodiment of feminine and masculine, and healing energies. I so genuinely hope we can get back to a place of connection, not only with whales and bees but all of life. You’ll also hear about: (03:02) Deep in the edits(07:24) Whales in captivity (14:08) Writing from Ireland (18:42) Visiting the bees(22:13) Return to connectionDon’t miss these invitations to connect more deeply to what’s in process in your life!Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you listen to podcasts! Resources mentioned in the episode: Dr. Jill Bolte TaylorFollow Dr. Gertrude Learn more on Dr. Gertrude’s websiteFollow Dr. Gertrude on InstagramStay in the loop and sign up to Dr. Gertrude’s newsletter

S5 Ep 143143: Mothering Without A Child: New Paradigms for New Moms with Emma Miele

E

In this episode, I speak with Emma Miele, an ICF-certified coach and Founder of The Breathing Room LLC, about choosing to be a mother, egg-freezing, and grieving old life visions to embrace new ones. The Breathing Room is not only Emma’s coaching platform but also a reminder to give ourselves breathing room to be where we naturally are in the moment and to remain curious about why we think things should be a certain way. She is a true embodiment of living what she teaches! She shares how she is approaching the choice to be a mother. We discuss social pressures, egg freezing, and the business of birth. There’s a lot of fear-based and expensive messaging in our societies about choosing to have a child, which intentionally preys on people’s vulnerabilities about making that choice. Emma shares how she is currently in a grieving process for the life she thought she was going to live, which included marriage and children, to gain more space to live the life she is actually living. A person’s value is not inherently wrapped up in their childbearing status, which our culture still deeply struggles with, and Emma shares how she is rewriting this mother code.  You’ll also hear about: (05:17) Emma’s journey from finance to coaching  (12:23) Considering motherhood(18:24) Emma’s anger towards egg freezing (23:58) Expanding the definition of mothering (29:52) Grieving old visions of life(35:00) The truth of the moment (40:07) More choices than child or no child (47:01) Expanding possibilitiesMy conversation with Emma will leave you with some possibly life-changing questions for reflection. S5 Ep 142142: Capturing Confidence: Meka Hemmons on Beauty, Power, and Purpose

In this episode, I speak with Meka Hemmons, one of my favorite portrait photographers, about her artistic journey, disrupting the beauty industry and living her purpose every day.Meka beautifully shares her life journey and the importance of learning from rock bottom moments when they come along. Following a long depression in her career, she was able to completely turn her path around by engaging with the hard questions about her life purpose that lay in her heart. These intuitive messages are now source material for an exciting upcoming digital course that she is creating. Meka discusses how knowing our purpose is only half the battle. Trusting ourselves to actually do something about it is where the magic happens. For Meka, this includes rewriting the beauty industry, including representation, how women are taught to value themselves, and their self-image. Part of rewriting these codes is the integral work of learning to believe in ourselves and our inner knowing again. From her experiences as a portrait photographer primarily capturing women, Meka shares what makes women hesitate when they look at their photos and how being photographed can be such a liberating experience. We discuss how beauty and power are interchangeable and the dire need for a mindset shift across society to realize our full human potential. You’ll also hear about: (04:37) Meka’s expansive life journey and rock bottom moments (13:40) Launching a book and digital courses(17:52) Rewriting the beauty industry(22:17) Knowledge from the mind vs the body(31:02) Photographing women(40:07) Why isn’t society further along yet?(45:02) The joy of pain(50:56) Learning to value and share our desiresMeka’s message and light are not to be missed!Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you listen to podcasts! Connect with Meka HemmonsLearn more on Meka’s websiteConnect with Meka on LinkedInFollow Dr. Gertrude Learn more on Dr. Gertrude’s websiteFollow Dr. Gertrude on InstagramStay in the loop and sign up to Dr. Gertrude’s newsletter

S5 Ep 141141: Empowered Birthing: Evidence-Based Insights with Dr. Rebecca Decker

In this episode, I speak with Rebecca Dekker, the Founder and CEO of Evidence Based Birth® (EBB), about her experiences of obstetric care and homebirth. You will learn how to navigate the obstetric system, advocate for yourself, and understand the implications of hospital policies on maternal health. After a disempowering birth experience, Rebecca sought answers to improve not only her future births but those of every woman. This research became the foundation for EBB. She shares the fascinating history of midwifery in the U.S. as well as the conscious decision to turn birthing into a business, eradicating the generations of knowledge passed between midwives, doulas, and communities of women. This is a cycle most of us are still very much inside of!Rebecca discusses how fear-based hospital practices and language around birth can unnecessarily be and what we can do about it. In parts of the world that still have midwives, the maternity care is dramatically better, making this topic more important than ever. Rebecca details specific red flags too look out for with obstetric providers, and suggests if you see one or more of them to find a new provider. S5 Ep 140140: Embracing Disruption: Icelandic Insights with Dr. Gertrude Lyons

E

Coming to you live from Iceland! In this solo episode, I share what I’ve been learning from the whales, invite you into the harvest season with me, and open the doors to play. August is truly the season of harvest, and in this episode, I invite you to really step back and consider what you are harvesting, how it aligns with your visions of the year, and how you can take an honest inventory full of compassion. I share how the harvest season is unfolding in my life, which has brought me to Iceland, and what I’ve learned from the year’s many ups and downs. I share what I’ve discovered through honoring whales alongside the Sonar Summit in Iceland and the parallels between honoring the feminine and any other group or body that has consistently had its agency taken away from it, not unlike midwives in the birthing space. I am a passionate advocate for the release of whales from captivity worldwide and hope the empathy we collectively share for animals can extend to each other. August is truly the perfect time to fearlessly check in to everything we’re in relationship with as a way of forwarding momentum and rewriting our mother codes. You’ll also hear about: (01:22) Surrendering to the energy of a new place(05:57) Invitation to a season of harvest(10:56) The wisdom of the Sonar Summit(17:41) Honoring whales and the feminine(21:58) Celebrating collective wins (27:01) Learning to relax(29:30) The August reviewBe sure to download Dr. Gertrude’s free Summer Self-Discovery Download!Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you listen to podcasts! Resources mentioned in the episode: Sonar SummitFollow Dr. Gertrude Learn more on Dr. Gertrude’s websiteFollow Dr. Gertrude on InstagramStay in the loop and sign up to Dr. Gertrude’s newsletterSign up for the Lunar Embrace: Self-Mothering RetreatSecure your spot in my exclusive VIP 1:1 Fall Equinox Immersive Experience

S5 Ep 139139: Embracing Community, Body Image, and Partnership: Insights from Elizabeth Tuazon

E

I’m delighted to welcome back Elizabeth Tuazon to celebrate seven months postpartum. In this episode, we discuss returning to work, community support, and the value of shared experiences. After a full update on her daughter’s 7-month life journey, Elizabeth shares how difficult it is to prepare to go back to work, from the emotional toll to the mountain of logistics. Though Elizabeth has been hesitant to join mom groups, she has found the support of her mom friends invaluable and is considering opening up to more adult-child communities. Continuing to improve how we self-nourish is a lifelong commitment, and being open to new relationships is part of that. There are many ways to measure how healthy you are that don’t include wishing the baby weight would disappear. Elizabeth measures how much she is walking or sleeping on a daily basis over counting pounds. She shares how much, admittedly to her surprise, she enjoys witnessing the new shapes of her body as she continues along her motherhood journey. Long may it continue! She hopes her daughter escapes the body issues she navigated but also realizes it’s not up to her. Lastly, Elizabeth updates us on how she is continuing to level up the partnership with her husband, from identifying breakdowns to communication upgrades. Both as co-parents and as a couple, there’s always something to learn together. You’ll also hear about: (01:14) Welcome back, Elizabeth!(06:10) Logistics and emotions of returning to work(14:41) Mom groups, mom friends, and community(22:20) Baby weight, self-worth, and body image(28:14) Wanting better for her daughter(33:32) Forever improving partnership(40:08) Disentangling the thread of myselfThere’s so much to learn from and be grateful for in these transition moments. S5 Ep 138138: Living Through This: Kristen McGuiness on Motherhood, Gun Violence, and Creative Healing

E

In this episode, Dr. Gertrude speaks with Kristen McGuiness, author of ‘Live Through This’ and founder of Rise Writers, about being an entrepreneur mom, being honest about the parenting experience, and working with transformational healing opportunities. While Kristen wasn’t always sure she wanted to be a mother, she knew she would never sacrifice her work or parenting life. Both can exist side by side! She shares her joy with having two “really short friends she loves taking care of.” As entrepreneurs, she and her husband are able to integrate their children into their lives much more than when they worked traditional office jobs. We discuss being a good role model for your children, prioritizing fun even when life feels stressful, and deciding to have children later in life.Kristen’s experiences of fearing for her children’s future and the realities of gun violence inspired her critically acclaimed novel, ‘Live Through This.’ She speaks to how she wrote her way through the pain, anxiety, and fear with her book as a transformational healing opportunity. There’s a lot of creation energy that comes from being a mother and being a writer. S5 Ep 137137: Fearless Foundry: Crafting Meaningful Feminist Futures with Madeline Reeves

E

In this episode, I’m delighted to speak with Madeline Reeves, a mother, community builder, and the CEO and Founder of Fearless Foundry. In our conversation, Madeline reflects on her journey to rewrite her mother codes and the importance of self-prioritization for individual and collective healing. In sharing about how she got to where she is today, Madeline speaks candidly about the painful experiences she’s largely kept hidden from her outward, professional persona. As she expands her definition of mothering, she’s more comfortable owing every part of her identity and challenging assumptions made at first glance. Madeline is a deeply service-oriented leader, and like so many women, will pour into her family, business, and community before giving back to herself. We discuss how prioritizing yourself shows others that it’s not selfish, and in fact, sets an example for how to mother yourself through the transitions of girlhood to menopause. However, Madeline brings up that not everyone will cheer for you when you start to expect more for yourself. She shares what happened inside her lineage when she started to break this paradigm and navigate divorce. Her response was to make more space for the people who uplift and empower her, creating a beautiful ripple effect for the girls and women in her life. We also share recent stories of finding joy and freedom in putting ourselves out there in vulnerable ways. Madeline outlines a helpful mindset shift she leans on when she’s up against her edges, especially as it relates to posting on social media and moving her body. I’m so honored to share Madeline’s story with you and I can’t wait to have her back on for part two (and more!). You’ll also hear about: (04:59) Recovery, motherhood, and entrepreneurship(24:01) Expanding the definition of mothering (31:19) “Do it like other women are watching.”(37:30) Self-expression and authenticity on social media (51:56) Midwifery birthing research (54:41) Being the mother you wish you had (56:49) Dr. Gertrude’s wrap upDon’t miss out on Madeline inspiring story! Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you listen to podcasts! Connect with Madeline ReevesLearn more on the Fearless Foundry websiteListen to the Finding Fearless podcastFollow Madeline on InstagramFollow Dr. Gertrude Learn more on Dr. Gertrude’s websiteFollow Dr. Gertrude on InstagramStay in the loop and sign up to Dr. Gertrude’s newsletter

S5 Ep 136136: Embracing the Power of Receiving: Dr. Gertrude’s Journey

E

In this episode, Dr. Gertrude shares her journey of opening to receive and celebrating yourself. Many of the lessons came about through the birth of her book and the experience of receiving a lot of support from a community of meaningful female friendships.Receiving is an important facet of self-mothering and a space of self-nourishment that most women struggle with. Dr. Gertrude unpacks some of her own blocks for receiving love and support. Her impromptu decision to attend a celebration led by Clark Strand and Perdita Finn invited many unknowns, uncertainties, and opportunities for expansion. As she crossed this threshold while she was on the verge of turning in the final chapters of her book, her experiences brought her closer to herself, her friends, and the divine feminine than she ever would have imagined. Dr. Gertrude shares how an astrology reading at the time put words to her experience of moving through a core wound around being seen and how she integrated that information into action. She reflects on her writing journey, the editing process, and the many healing conversations along the way with gratitude and excitement. You’ll also hear about: (01:31) Dr. Gertrude’s struggles with receiving (04:30) Attending Clark’s annual celebration(09:59) Lessons of receiving while “birthing”(15:36) Continuous giving and receiving(20:02) A career-oriented birth experienceDon’t miss this invitation to widen your capacity for receivership! Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you listen to podcasts! Resources mentioned in the episode: Sign up for the Lunar Embrace Retreat November 14-16. S5 Ep 135135: Breaking the Cycle: Nina Mongendre on Healing Inherited Trauma

E

In this episode, I’m delighted to be in conversation with Nina Mongendre. She is a coach and author of the Inner Child & Beyond Oracle Deck, which I personally love to work with. We discuss Nina’s unique experience of rewriting the mother code through her work with ancestral trauma and traumatic healing, how we can learn from our mothers, and mothering’s infinite capacity to teach.Nina’s mother codes are woven through the story of her upbringing. Raised in Hong Kong, meeting Mother Theresa at 3 years old, living in France then the U.S., the geography of her childhood was dramatically shaping. She often felt cut off from her feelings and creativity. As an adult she embraced yoga, meditation, and spiritual practice. Nina vulnerably shares how she consciously decided to have children of her own and that she wanted them to have a much different childhood than hers, she also realized she was using these healing tools to spiritually bypass her own feelings. We then discuss the paths her healing journey has taken after her mother’s passing. She reminds us that our relationships with our parents are ongoing, even if they are deceased. We always hold our parents with us, and they are always available to ask for help. As a mother of two, one of the most nourishing spiritual self-care practices for Nina is finding silence and space to be alone. As women, we too often do not prioritize ourselves and uphold only permeable boundaries. Motherhood has continued to peel back the layers of healing for Nina. The lessons learned are infused in Nina’s incredible oracle deck and her current coaching offerings. Her work beautifully integrates inner child healing, inherited trauma, and emotional processing. You’ll also hear about: (03:15) Welcome Nina Mongendre (06:45) Growing up spread apart and stifled (11:35) Moving the family to France (17:45) Becoming a mother(23:18) Healing after losing a parent(26:34) Mothering through dreams (33:30) Daily practices for moms (42:06) Nina’s deck and offerings(46:24) How Nina rewrites the mother code Rate, Review, & Follow on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you listen to podcasts! Resources mentioned in the episode: Perdita FinnEdieArtConnect with Nina MongendreLearn more on Nina’s websiteFollow Nina on InstagramBuy the Inner Child & Beyond Oracle Deck hereFollow Dr. Gertrude Learn more on Dr. Gertrude’s websiteFollow Dr. Gertrude on InstagramStay in the loop and sign up to Dr. Gertrude’s newsletter
