Integrating Theology & Psychology; Christian Existentialism (#132)
Dr. Brad Strawn (Fuller) joins me today for essentially a two-parter. First, we talk about the integration of psychology and theology broadly, including Brad’s own story of coming to that work in particular. After the break, we talk about how a Christian might also be an existentialist in some ways, a field of thought commonly associated with atheism or agnosticism. Finally, Sarey Concepcion, Communications Director for Blueprint 1543, joins me for a brief interview about some very high-quality free courses around psychology and theology that their organization is offering.Blueprint 1543's free courses: theopsych.comBrad's Author Page: https://fullerstudio.fuller.edu/contributor/brad-d-strawn/Richard Beck episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/you-have-permission/id1448000113?i=1000437315400Beck's "The Slavery of Death": https://www.amazon.com/Slavery-Death-Richard-Beck/dp/1620327775Pete Hill episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/you-have-permission/id1448000113?i=1000448442686"The Worm at the Core": https://www.amazon.com/Worm-Core-Role-Death-Life/dp/1400067472Dan's new music project Havana Swim Club on Spotify: open.spotify.com/artist/6CzaYsf8R…687fd1c987ee466eHavana Swim Club on YouTube: www.youtube.com/channel/UCkhsQydzvcAHT2d70dWZvjAAlbum Spotify pre-save: distrokid.com/hyperfollow/havana…b/havana-swim-clubFollow Dan on IG: www.instagram.com/dancoke/Or Twitter: twitter.com/DanKochFaith deconstruction resources: soyouredeconstructing.comEdited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. How Free Is Our Will? (#131)
I'm joined by absolute neuroscience all-star William Newsome (Stanford, NIH BRAIN Project) to discuss the ways in which our will is both free and constrained. What counts as free will? Are the Sam Harris types right that we have no free will? (Nope.) How do "top-down" and "bottom-up" forces affect our will? When is it the "most free"?Follow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Or Twitter: https://twitter.com/DanKochFaith deconstruction resources: soyouredeconstructing.comEdited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. Responding to "The Rise & Fall of Mars Hill" (#130)
This week, you're getting a sneak peek into the kind of exclusive episodes that patrons of this show received twice per month. Multiple-time guest Tony Jones joins me to break down and respond to the first 2 episodes of the incredible Christianity Today-produced podcast "The Rise and Fall of Mars Hill." If possible, listen to those episodes before listening to us respond (but you don't have to). Religion, Virtue & Human Thriving (#129)
I spoke with the multi-talented Dr. Pamela King (Fuller Seminary, Thrive Center for Human Development). She is a researcher in developmental psychology whose passion is human thriving. We talk about thriving, as well as how virtue connects to thriving. Before that, she sets the stage with a discussion of religion and its role in both virtue development and thriving. For Pam, a virtue is a "psychological capacity that enables us to know, feel, and do what is right and good at different times and in different places." I love that definition. We also talk about the relationship between our own evolving narrative identity and the formation of virtues.Dr. King's Thrive Center profile: https://thethrivecenter.org/about/pam-ebstyne-king/Her Twitter: https://twitter.com/drpamkingHer Amazon author's page: https://smile.amazon.com/s?i=stripbooks&rh=p_27%3APamela+Ebstyne+King&s=relevancerank&text=Pamela+Ebstyne+King&ref=dp_byline_sr_book_2Dan's new music project Havana Swim Club on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/6CzaYsf8RIrCHNDhFGSfgm?si=InuVGF2ESse9unLRXM3QJQhttps://open.spotify.com/track/6FNXLPqbXvIC9OZmHqy6cK?si=687fd1c987ee466eHavana Swim Club on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkhsQydzvcAHT2d70dWZvjAAlbum Spotify pre-save: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/havanaswimclub/havana-swim-clubFollow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Or Twitter: https://twitter.com/DanKochFaith deconstruction resources: soyouredeconstructing.comEdited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. "Christian Music": Jon Guerra (#128)
I'm joined by one of my favorite Christian recording artists, Jon Guerra. His latest album "Keeper of Days" is phenomenal, and there is so much depth lurking just behind its carefully-constructed songs. Thankfully, a nice dose of that depth comes out in this fantastic conversation! We talk growing up the child of immigrants, Christian Nationalism, the Sermon on the Mount, the CCM machine, border politics, silence/prayer in the creative life, and more. I Don't Believe in That God: Luke Barnett (#127)
Actor and filmmaker Luke Barnett joins me for another installment of "I Don't Believe in That God." These are conversations with people who do not identify as Christian, but they are not debates. Rather, they are attempts to understand my guest's story and perspective, with plenty of hopefully interesting rabbit trails along the way. https://twitter.com/LukeBarnettFaith Ba$ed on Prime Video: https://www.amazon.com/Faith-Based-Luke-Barnett/dp/B08KGRJJMROur previous episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/you-have-permission/id1448000113?i=1000494497232Dan's new music project Havana Swim Club on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/6CzaYsf8RIrCHNDhFGSfgm?si=InuVGF2ESse9unLRXM3QJQhttps://open.spotify.com/track/6FNXLPqbXvIC9OZmHqy6cK?si=687fd1c987ee466eHavana Swim Club on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkhsQydzvcAHT2d70dWZvjAAlbum Spotify pre-save: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/havanaswimclub/havana-swim-clubFollow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Or Twitter: https://twitter.com/DanKochFaith deconstruction resources: soyouredeconstructing.comEdited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. Celibate Gay Christian Bridget Eileen Rivera (#126)
I'm joined by Bridget Eileen Rivera, a sociologist completing her Ph.D. at the City University of New York Graduate Center. A homeschool graduate and alum of Patrick Henry College, Rivera has become a leading voice on gay celibacy in the the church. She has worked with a number of faith-based organizations, including Revoice, Christians for Social Action, and Preston Sprinkle’s Center for Faith, Sexuality, and Gender. Bridget and I differ ultimately on whether we think queer Christians are in general called by God to celibacy, but that didn't stop us from having a really great and interesting conversation about all things gender, sexuality, and faith. From Conservative Presbyterian to Episcopal Priest (#125)
Rev. Greg Farrand joins me to talk through his journey from high school burnout to PCA minister to Episcopal priest to his current gig as the executive director of Second Breath, an organization that promotes ancient Christian spiritual practice in a variety of contexts. Greg wanted an experiential faith, but found himself in a highly doctrine/reason-heavy tradition. His love for a wonderful lesbian couple and their intensely painful experience with him and his previous church also played a central role. We talk about the fruit of the spirit and how we discern truth using it as a guide.Second Breath Center: https://secondbreathcenter.com/Second Breath Open Zoom meeting Wednesdays at noon EST: https://zoom.us/j/2794690933?pwd=M3ZOUGFlb3dGbThSejhWcUlteHJMQT09SB Resources page: https://secondbreathcenter.com/resources/Dan's new music project Havana Swim Club on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/6CzaYsf8RIrCHNDhFGSfgm?si=InuVGF2ESse9unLRXM3QJQhttps://open.spotify.com/track/6FNXLPqbXvIC9OZmHqy6cK?si=687fd1c987ee466eHavana Swim Club on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkhsQydzvcAHT2d70dWZvjAAlbum Spotify pre-save: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/havanaswimclub/havana-swim-clubFollow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Or Twitter: https://twitter.com/DanKochFaith deconstruction resources: soyouredeconstructing.comEdited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. Abortion & Polyamory (#124)
A frank discussion about two highly contentious issues in one episode -- what could possibly go wrong? I'm grateful to be joined by my dear friend, theologian Sarah Lane Ritchie, a person who shares my love of nuance to discuss these really tricky issues one after the other. "Bible Truths," "Sanctified Common Sense," & "Evangelical Insta-Trust" (#123)
Today I am joined by emerging scholar Heather Griffin to talk through some language of hers that I have found *so* helpful in understanding white Evangelical culture. Terms of hers like "Bible truths," "sanctified common sense," "magic knowledge receptor," "sincerity culture," and "Evangelical insta-trust" all come up in our conversation. Perhaps most impressive, however, is the way she links all of these terms and concepts into an understandable system. To say she is both a keen observer and an empathic pastor at heart is a massive understatement on both accounts. I'm joined by PEW Research's Besheer Mohamed to discuss their recent fabulous deep-dive into the religious lives of Black Americans. We discuss why they decided on the topic, what was known previously, what they've been able to add, the role of religion in the lives of Black Americans, differences between Islam and Christianity in the Black community, the deep relationship to justice movements, and more. A Massive Evangelical Sex Survey (#120)
This week, I spoke with Joanna Daigle Sawatsky and Rebecca Lindenbach about their incredible research work for the new book by Sheila Wray Gregoire (their boss) "The Great Sex Rescue." This research involved surveying over 22,000 (!!!) Evangelical women about sex, reproductive issues, gender roles, and more. We break down what they found in their survey, as well as in popular Evangelical marriage/sex resources and the wider academic research around Evangelicalism and sexuality. Purity Culture episodes are always popular on this show, and if you find that topic interesting or relevant, you should definitely listen to this conversation. The Great Sex Rescue: https://smile.amazon.com/Great-Sex-Rescue-Recover-Intended/dp/1540900827/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=great+sex+rescue&qid=1622141434&sr=8-1To Love Honor and Vacuum: https://tolovehonorandvacuum.com/Dan's new music project Havana Swim Club on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/6CzaYsf8RIrCHNDhFGSfgm?si=InuVGF2ESse9unLRXM3QJQhttps://open.spotify.com/track/6FNXLPqbXvIC9OZmHqy6cK?si=687fd1c987ee466eHavana Swim Club on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkhsQydzvcAHT2d70dWZvjAAlbum Spotify pre-save: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/havanaswimclub/havana-swim-clubFollow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Or Twitter: https://twitter.com/DanKochFaith deconstruction resources: soyouredeconstructing.comEdited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. I Don't Believe in that God: Joey Holman (Man on Man) (#118)
Another installment of one of my favorite types of episodes, where I chat with people who don't identify as Christian. Often times, I also don't believe in the God that they don't believe in. Joey Holman (ex-Cool Hand Luke) is one half of the Polyvinyl Records duo Man on Man, alongside his boyfriend Roddy Bottum (Faith No More). He grew up in a broken home outside Atlanta, found Evangelical Christianity in his teens, experienced dissonance around his gay sexuality, and eventually did some therapy and gained a lot of insight about his journey. All About Homeschooling (#116)
My guest is Robert Kunzman, managing Director of the International Center for Home Education Research. He is a professor at Indiana University, where he teaches courses in curriculum, pedagogy, and philosophy of education. His research explores the intersection of citizenship, religion, and education, with a particular focus on homeschooling. Listeners of YHP asked almost every question in this episode, and Robert is so concise that we are able to get through pretty much all of them! As a researcher, his angle and answers are largely empirical, so keep that in mind -- we aren't getting, for instance, an emotional memoir of one person's insane experience in a home schooling cult. For that, I recommend the book "Educated" by Tara Westover. The Opposite of Spiritual Abuse (#115)
I had the immense privilege of speaking with Dr. Lisa Oakley, one of the leading researchers in the field of spiritual abuse. We talk about many aspects of SA, and then we move on to some of her newer research, focused on healthy communities in which such abuse does not thrive.World Relief Refugee petition: https://worldrelief.org/petition/Lisa’s 3 Questions:1. Worries About Progressive Christianity: Brad Jones (#114)
In the first of what I hope are many conversations with those more conservative than myself about progressive Christianity, Brad Jones shares his worries and concerns, both personal and theological. This is a very open, frank, kind, and curious conversation between two people who agree on a good chunk of things but also disagree on a lot. I really enjoyed it and found it very helpful in understanding the experience of a more conservative person dealing with the uncertainty of a growing somewhat-alien movement.Brad: instagram.com/mrbradjonesFollow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Or Twitter: https://twitter.com/DanKochFaith deconstruction resources: soyouredeconstructing.comEdited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. This is a delightful conversation with the anonymous Twitter personality and podcaster known as Trans Regret Snoopy whose podcast Trans Regret Snoopy Presents the Bible is one of the best-named religious podcasts ever to exist, in my opinion. Republican Christianity & a Data-Fueled Center-Left Lovefest (#109)
Politics. Identity. Tribalism. Woke culture. Partisanship perceptions. Racial resentment. "Holding their nose" for Trump. Immigration Rural/urban divide. Christian Nationalism: Diagnosis & Treatment (#104)
** Please take my Varieties of Church Experience Survey, and share with friends and family (especially more conservative ones!): https://northwestupsych.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3r3jgp1f2oqDJNc **As someone paying some attention to the news, I was not surprised that Trump was acquitted a second time in the Senate. But back on January 6th, I was somewhat surprised to see so much Christian imagery and signage at the Capitol Hill siege. David Cassidy, a PCA pastor in Franklin, TN, wrote an incredible tweet thread recently on Evangelicals, conspiracy theories, and Christian nationalism. We disagree theologically about plenty, but I respect the hell out of what he's doing, and this was a fantastic conversation. We need more leaders like David if this largely-lost generation of Baby Boomer Evangelicals is to be saved from themselves and brought back to God. Doubting or denying one’s religious beliefs that were once held as true.2. Subtle or intense anxiety about a person’s relationship with God. 3. Increase of painful emotions, such as anger, loneliness, shame, guilt, sadness, and despair. 4. Isolation (community is massive for healing, meaning-making, and growth after trauma) and criticism (feared or realized) from members within their own family and/or religious community. 5. Is the Enneagram Real? (#101)
To celebrate 100 episodes -- that is, 101 episodes -- my friends join me to talk about a subject that everyone else seems to love a lot more than I do: the Enneagram! The 5 of us, 4 short of the holy number of 9 (myself, Sarey Martin Concepcion, Myron Penner, Sarah Lane Ritchie, and Tripp Fuller), take various positions on the Enneagram and have a lively debate/discussion about its usefulness (or not) and the extent to which is accurately maps onto reality. A History of Conspiracy Theories & Evangelicals (#100)
I’m joined by Dr. Sam Perry to discuss the tangled historical web of White Evangelicals in the US and their use of and affiliation for various conspiracy theories, starting in the 1950 around “outside agitators” in the Civil Rights movement. Sam traces through lines all the way up to Donald Trump, hitting the Moral Majority, Pat Robertson, Tim LaHaye/Left Behind, Obama, and birtherism along the way. We also get some historical context for many conspiracy theories that we were taught in Evangelical households growing up: the Satanic panic, New Age denunciations, the “gay agenda,” anti-Catholic sentiment, and more. We talk about parallel institutions within Evangelicalism and their distribution role in disseminating certain conspiracy theories. It was a lot to cover, and more could be said about almost every issue that came up, but I think listeners will find it helpful (and even entertaining) nonetheless.Sam’s article on The Conversation: https://theconversation.com/amp/evangelical-leaders-like-billy-graham-and-jerry-falwell-sr-have-long-talked-of-conspiracies-against-gods-chosen-those-ideas-are-finding-resonance-today-132241Why Are Christians Succeptible to Conspiracy Theories?:https://www.abc.net.au/religion/why-are-christians-susceptible-to-conspiracy-theories/13003550The American Life "The Problem We All Live With": https://www.thisamericanlife.org/562/the-problem-we-all-live-with-part-oneRhetorics of Race and Religion on the Christian Right: https://www.amazon.com/Rhetorics-Race-Religion-Christian-Right-ebook/dp/B081LMTKFZEdited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. How Do Autistic Christians Relate to God? (#98)
Budding autistic theologian Erin Burnett joins Dan to talk about her undergraduate thesis (Europe is slightly different, and Dan misspoke in the episode calling it a master’s thesis), which looked at the unique ways that autistic Christians understand and experience God. Erin finds that progressive Christianity tends to sit better with many autistic Christians, including herself, and — get this — she thinks there is ample evidence that St. Paul himself was autistic.https://autismfaithnetwork.com/Erin's blog post, "The Ramblings of an Autistic Christian": http://erinburnettauthor.co.uk/ramblings-autistic-christian/Erin's dissertation: https://www.tandfonline.com/eprint/TJGEAKSI6NKPCGDHINTR/full?target=10.1080%2F1756073X.2020.1850402&fbclid=IwAR3oYRKjPO8cepnr-eoE5HJ-jJZjePASVpYt9tK025BAI6dIFBJ1yyYz8f0Follow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Or Twitter: https://twitter.com/DanKochEdited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. From Addict to Addictions Counselor (#97)
Jed Payne, host of the Church & Other Drugs Podcast, shares his story of serious lifelong drug addiction, how he ended up an addictions counselor, as well as some of the psychological tactics those counselors use to help addicts toward recovery. Specifically, “motivational interviewing” is a common approach Jed uses in his work, and Dan has recently been learning and practicing MI as part of his own psych education. This fairly practical conversation takes place in front of a theological backdrop which considers the utilization of social science and social services to be spiritually significant, taking advantages of the gifts and resources of people, institutions, and governments to make our world look more like the Kingdom of God on earth.Church & Other Drugs podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/church-other-drugs/id1191035186Follow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Or Twitter: https://twitter.com/DanKochEdited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. Spiritual Trauma & Scriptural Metaphors (#96)
Ashley Davis Gavila does "trauma-informed life coaching & spiritual care” with clients who have often suffered religious or spiritual abuse. She is not a therapist, and her work is therefore distinct from therapy, but both her dissertation research and client work give her an interesting perspective on this issue that I am, as you now all know, so interested in. So how about some trauma-informed podcast content, just in time for awkward holiday family conversations?Ashley’s site: https://desertbloomhealing.com/Dissertation: https://digitalcommons.georgefox.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1293&context=dminStreams of Living Water Podcast Series: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/episode-94-streams-living-water-richard-foster-james/id917771018?i=1000391523930About the “Streams”: https://renovare.org/about/ideas/the-six-streamsFollow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Edited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. The Surprising Value of Megachurches (#95)
I know, I know, I know. Megachurches are so often panned and criticized that it is hard to consider whether or not or in what ways they might actually be good for people. But here is some serious peer-reviewed research to help burst us our of our bubbles from veteran religion researcher James K. Wellman, Jr. (University of Washington). "Christian Music": John Van Deusen (#94)
The first in a series of conversations with musicians who have had some experiences with “Christian Music,” whatever that ultimately means. John Van Deusen is one of my absolute favorite recording artists, period. Formerly leading the band The Lonely Forest, his solo work of the last few years is both phenomenal and prolific. And he has some TAKES about the Christian music industry!“Mind Reader” played from album 1: https://open.spotify.com/album/4V3EmTpSjw69h307nW9zPK?si=aGOWTrTnRyaXNX4-taOWoA“None Other” played from album 2: https://open.spotify.com/album/6UlGiLqUWdqlozYuiOihI1?si=i7MesHC-TV-6VIeu8Zq4vA“Whatever Makes You Mine” played from Album 3: https://open.spotify.com/album/601b2dRqWuGBNLQUxWkhDI?si=goqndRx3RrOWOPJ5MVHNHwLive on KEXP session: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NJAYG0Npb4Buffet: https://open.spotify.com/album/1G1ApeHhdPFlwESStrWhBa?si=_vnD3OUaQraFpUHtO3dDygFollow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Edited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. So, You're Deconstructing... (Dot Com) (#93)
Today we are celebrating the launch of Sarey Martin Concepcion and I’s web resource soyouredeconstructing.com! To do so, our entire little friend group has gathered around some microphones to tell stories from our own faith journeys, touching on various topics that tend to come up for people whose faith is changing and re-forming. I’m joined by Sarey, Sarah Lane Ritchie, Myron Penner and Tripp Fuller. Make sure to check out the sillier companion episode to this that is also airing today as on the Homebrewed Christianity Podcast feed, where Tripp, Sarey, Mason Mennenga and I compete in an Evangelical Fantasy Draft while consuming multiple beverages (and you can even vote on who has the best team!).Homebrewed SYD Launch episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/homebrewed-christianity-podcast/id276269040#episodeGuid=https%3A%2F%2Ftrippfuller.com%2F%3Fp%3D32131soyouredeconstructing.comFollow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Edited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. Church Failure, Church Future (#92)
Dan talks with Tony Jones about the failures of the Emerging Church movement, of which he was a central part, and what’s going on today with churches in America. How might they thrive in the future? Are there any signs that they will make necessary changes? What happens to churches after Covid? Why do gay-affirming people stay in non-affirming churches? What role does church actually play in people’s lives? Why didn’t the Emerging Church leaders pass the baton to the next generation? What is going on today with the “Nones” and “Spiritual but not Religious”? These and many other interesting questions are batted around, and Tony is a very fun interview. The Reverend Hunter: https://reverendhunter.com/Dan’s B4NP Episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-bible-for-normal-people/id1215420422#episodeGuid=f6f74bbc-d7b0-41f1-8a63-45a1946c18e3Resources for faith de/reconstruction: soyouredeconstructing.comFollow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Edited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. So You Want a Bible Podcast: Jared Byas & The Bible for Normal People (#91)
This is the first in a series of episodes where I interview hosts of podcasts that focus primarily on the Bible itself, since it is now clear to me that You Have Permission will never quite be one of those shows. And yet, there are many great shows that do focus on the Bible! So listen to these interviews, and see which Bible-focused podcasts resonate with you.SoYoureDeconstructing.comThe Bible for Normal People — https://peteenns.com/podcast/Genesis for Normal People: https://www.amazon.com/Genesis-Normal-People-Controversial-Misunderstood/dp/193922103XThe Bible Tells Me So: https://www.amazon.com/Bible-Tells-Me-Defending-Scripture/dp/0062272039Follow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Edited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. The Varieties of Religious & Spiritual Abuse (#90)
My guest is Dr. Paula Swindle, one of the only people in the world currently doing peer-reviewed research on the topic of spiritual and religious abuse. Election Special: Persecuted Christians, Mask-less Worship Gatherings & QAnon
...in which in lieu of a new YHP episode, we feature friend of the podcast Jon Ward and his *fantastic* conversation with WORLD Magazine contributors Mindy & Emily Belz. Jon's show notes are below.****Mindy Belz has been with World Magazine since its founding in 1986. It’s a publication aimed at evangelical Christians, started by her brother in law, Joel Belz. Emily Belz, Mindy’s daughter, is also at World now, and has worked at the New York Daily News and The Indianapolis Star.Mindy has spent 20 years covering the plight of Christians in Iraq and Syria. This is a story that truly did get overlooked: before the U.S. invaded Iraq in 2003, there were about 1 million Christians in Iraq, living out a version of the faith with incredibly ancient roots. Many Christians in that region still speak Aramaic, the tongue that Christ himself spoke. But 17 years later, the Christian community in Iraq has been decimated by violence and intimidation. Only about 100,000 Christians remain there. The faith there has almost become extinct in terms of sheer population size. Mindy and I discuss a little bit how much decisions made, or not made, by the Bush administration, are responsible for that. Mindy’s book on this topic, “They Say We are Infidels: On the Run from from ISIS With Persecuted Christians in the Middle East,” came out in 2015. I recommend it. The suffering of this community there, and in Syria, is tough to comprehend. I first thought of interviewing Mindy when I saw her tweet something last May. It was in response to protests against COVID restrictions. "For 6 yrs I've reported on Christians chased from their homes & churches by ISIS, seen their testimony, steadiness, care for one another. How utterly disheartening to watch the American church come apart in a 10-wk shutdown. They shall be known by their demand for their rights,” she wrote. Mindy’s bigger critique of American Christians is two fold: they have no idea what real religious persecution looks like is one part of it. But she also notes the narrowness of demanding rights to do whatever one wants while disregarding the impact of not wearing masks and distancing on those who are most vulnerable — which is not just the older but also people who are poor and on the margins, those without health insurance who are going to avoid going to the doctor or ER if they get sick until it’s too late. And she contrasts this with a vision of the common good that characterizes Middle East Christians...****Jon also brings this into conversation with the recent spate of mask-free and non-distanced worship gatherings led most prominently by Sean Feucht. The Long Game Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-long-game/id1248994688Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. Secular Therapy's Religion Blind Spot (#88)
My guest is Dr. Kirk Honda, psychologist, professor, and co-host of the fantastic Psychology in Seattle Podcast. We’ve caused a turning point in the Earth’s natural history. The Christian Movie Industry (#86)
I spoke with Luke Barnett and Vince Masciale, the guys behind the new indy comedy Faith Based, about a pair of misfit buddies who try and make a quick buck by directing a Christian movie and selling it to the fictitious “Christflix” streaming channel. To make their own film, they did quite a bit of market research around the Christian movie industry, so naturally I was interested to talk about that. We also get into other forms of independent faith-based art like the Christian ska and punk scene of the 90’s and 2000’s. This is a breezy, fun conversation by YHP standards, and I really enjoyed it.Faith Based Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hn6Lfa-EkNALuke on Twitter: https://twitter.com/LukeBarnettFollow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Edited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. Infertility, Babies & a Fresh Experience of God (#85)
Dr. Sarah Lane Ritchie joins for her inaugural regular guest spot on YHP to discuss her and Dan’s shared recent experience of having their first children. They each tell their respective stories of infertility and IVF, and various theological and psychological implications of these are discussed, including: the role of neurotransmitter’s in God’s communication to humans, CS Lewis’s idea of Joy as a “foretaste” of the Kingdom of God, Hell, wonder/awe, the multiverse, and more.Follow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Edited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast.
