All About Homeschooling (#116)

My guest is Robert Kunzman, managing Director of the International Center for Home Education Research. He is a professor at Indiana University, where he teaches courses in curriculum, pedagogy, and philosophy of education. His research explores the intersection of citizenship, religion, and education, with a particular focus on homeschooling. Listeners of YHP asked almost every question in this episode, and Robert is so concise that we are able to get through pretty much all of them! As a researcher, his angle and answers are largely empirical, so keep that in mind -- we aren't getting, for instance, an emotional memoir of one person's insane experience in a home schooling cult. For that, I recommend the book "Educated" by Tara Westover. But this is a great and detailed conversation about a topic that many listeners have intense feelings about and/or history with. Thanks to everyone who submitted questions!International Center for Home Education Research: https://www.icher.org/Dan's episode of Boys Bible Study: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/crime-of-the-age-1988-feat-dan-koch/id1492037987?i=1000519700616Follow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Or Twitter: https://twitter.com/DanKochFaith deconstruction resources: soyouredeconstructing.comEdited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. The Opposite of Spiritual Abuse (#115)

I had the immense privilege of speaking with Dr. Lisa Oakley, one of the leading researchers in the field of spiritual abuse. We talk about many aspects of SA, and then we move on to some of her newer research, focused on healthy communities in which such abuse does not thrive.World Relief Refugee petition: https://worldrelief.org/petition/Lisa’s 3 Questions:1. Worries About Progressive Christianity: Brad Jones (#114)

In the first of what I hope are many conversations with those more conservative than myself about progressive Christianity, Brad Jones shares his worries and concerns, both personal and theological. This is a very open, frank, kind, and curious conversation between two people who agree on a good chunk of things but also disagree on a lot. I really enjoyed it and found it very helpful in understanding the experience of a more conservative person dealing with the uncertainty of a growing somewhat-alien movement.Brad: instagram.com/mrbradjonesFollow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Or Twitter: https://twitter.com/DanKochFaith deconstruction resources: soyouredeconstructing.comEdited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. A Trans Christian & Her Bible (Podcast) (#113)

This is a delightful conversation with the anonymous Twitter personality and podcaster known as Trans Regret Snoopy whose podcast Trans Regret Snoopy Presents the Bible is one of the best-named religious podcasts ever to exist, in my opinion. Global Violence Against Women (#111)

A difficult (but not as difficult to listen to as you might think!) conversation with philosopher, sociologist, and theologian Elaine Storkey about the state of woman-directed violence worldwide in all its forms, including:- selective abortion and infanticide- genital mutilation- early and enforced marriage- honor killings- domestic violence- trafficking and prostitution - rape- war and sexual violence But stick with us! Republican Christianity & a Data-Fueled Center-Left Lovefest (#109)

Politics. Identity. Tribalism. Woke culture. Partisanship perceptions. Racial resentment. "Holding their nose" for Trump. Immigration Rural/urban divide. All of these are more are touched upon in this wide-ranging data-fueled conversation between myself and Ryan Burge: professor, author, data analyst and ordained American Baptist pastor. Deep Magic & Death Anxiety (#105)

Sarah Lane Ritchie joins me for our regular chat to talk through two related topics: (1) a longing for the "deep magic" that used to move our Evangelical souls in tales like the Chronicles of Narnia, and (2) our own anxiety about death and the possibility that we will simply cease to exist (even though as Christians we hope that isn't the case). Christian Nationalism: Diagnosis & Treatment (#104)

** Please take my Varieties of Church Experience Survey, and share with friends and family (especially more conservative ones!): https://northwestupsych.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_3r3jgp1f2oqDJNc **As someone paying some attention to the news, I was not surprised that Trump was acquitted a second time in the Senate. But back on January 6th, I was somewhat surprised to see so much Christian imagery and signage at the Capitol Hill siege. David Cassidy, a PCA pastor in Franklin, TN, wrote an incredible tweet thread recently on Evangelicals, conspiracy theories, and Christian nationalism. We disagree theologically about plenty, but I respect the hell out of what he's doing, and this was a fantastic conversation. We need more leaders like David if this largely-lost generation of Baby Boomer Evangelicals is to be saved from themselves and brought back to God. Doubting or denying one’s religious beliefs that were once held as true.2. Subtle or intense anxiety about a person’s relationship with God. 3. Increase of painful emotions, such as anger, loneliness, shame, guilt, sadness, and despair. 4. Isolation (community is massive for healing, meaning-making, and growth after trauma) and criticism (feared or realized) from members within their own family and/or religious community. 5. Existential angst concerning a person’s identity and future selfThe 5 Stations of Healing we spoke about:1. Becoming aware of and using one’s emotions2. To celebrate 100 episodes -- that is, 101 episodes -- my friends join me to talk about a subject that everyone else seems to love a lot more than I do: the Enneagram! The 5 of us, 4 short of the holy number of 9 (myself, Sarey Martin Concepcion, Myron Penner, Sarah Lane Ritchie, and Tripp Fuller), take various positions on the Enneagram and have a lively debate/discussion about its usefulness (or not) and the extent to which is accurately maps onto reality. A History of Conspiracy Theories & Evangelicals (#100)

I’m joined by Dr. Sam Perry to discuss the tangled historical web of White Evangelicals in the US and their use of and affiliation for various conspiracy theories, starting in the 1950 around “outside agitators” in the Civil Rights movement. Sam traces through lines all the way up to Donald Trump, hitting the Moral Majority, Pat Robertson, Tim LaHaye/Left Behind, Obama, and birtherism along the way. We also get some historical context for many conspiracy theories that we were taught in Evangelical households growing up: the Satanic panic, New Age denunciations, the “gay agenda,” anti-Catholic sentiment, and more. We talk about parallel institutions within Evangelicalism and their distribution role in disseminating certain conspiracy theories. It was a lot to cover, and more could be said about almost every issue that came up, but I think listeners will find it helpful (and even entertaining) nonetheless.Sam’s article on The Conversation: https://theconversation.com/amp/evangelical-leaders-like-billy-graham-and-jerry-falwell-sr-have-long-talked-of-conspiracies-against-gods-chosen-those-ideas-are-finding-resonance-today-132241Why Are Christians Succeptible to Conspiracy Theories?:https://www.abc.net.au/religion/why-are-christians-susceptible-to-conspiracy-theories/13003550The American Life "The Problem We All Live With": https://www.thisamericanlife.org/562/the-problem-we-all-live-with-part-oneRhetorics of Race and Religion on the Christian Right: https://www.amazon.com/Rhetorics-Race-Religion-Christian-Right-ebook/dp/B081LMTKFZEdited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. I Don't Believe in that God: Natalie Schepman (Joseph) (#99)

Natalie Schepman of the band Joseph joins Dan for the latest in the “I Don’t Believe In That God” series, where Dan talks with folks do not consider themselves to be theists/Christians with the aim of getting to the bottom of what precisely they do not believe (in a non-evangelistic way). Erin finds that progressive Christianity tends to sit better with many autistic Christians, including herself, and — get this — she thinks there is ample evidence that St. Paul himself was autistic.https://autismfaithnetwork.com/Erin's blog post, "The Ramblings of an Autistic Christian": http://erinburnettauthor.co.uk/ramblings-autistic-christian/Erin's dissertation: https://www.tandfonline.com/eprint/TJGEAKSI6NKPCGDHINTR/full?target=10.1080%2F1756073X.2020.1850402&fbclid=IwAR3oYRKjPO8cepnr-eoE5HJ-jJZjePASVpYt9tK025BAI6dIFBJ1yyYz8f0Follow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Or Twitter: https://twitter.com/DanKochEdited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. From Addict to Addictions Counselor (#97)

Jed Payne, host of the Church & Other Drugs Podcast, shares his story of serious lifelong drug addiction, how he ended up an addictions counselor, as well as some of the psychological tactics those counselors use to help addicts toward recovery. Specifically, “motivational interviewing” is a common approach Jed uses in his work, and Dan has recently been learning and practicing MI as part of his own psych education. This fairly practical conversation takes place in front of a theological backdrop which considers the utilization of social science and social services to be spiritually significant, taking advantages of the gifts and resources of people, institutions, and governments to make our world look more like the Kingdom of God on earth.Church & Other Drugs podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/church-other-drugs/id1191035186Follow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Or Twitter: https://twitter.com/DanKochEdited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. Spiritual Trauma & Scriptural Metaphors (#96)

Ashley Davis Gavila does "trauma-informed life coaching & spiritual care” with clients who have often suffered religious or spiritual abuse. She is not a therapist, and her work is therefore distinct from therapy, but both her dissertation research and client work give her an interesting perspective on this issue that I am, as you now all know, so interested in. The first in a series of conversations with musicians who have had some experiences with “Christian Music,” whatever that ultimately means. Today we are celebrating the launch of Sarey Martin Concepcion and I’s web resource soyouredeconstructing.com! To do so, our entire little friend group has gathered around some microphones to tell stories from our own faith journeys, touching on various topics that tend to come up for people whose faith is changing and re-forming. I’m joined by Sarey, Sarah Lane Ritchie, Myron Penner and Tripp Fuller. Make sure to check out the sillier companion episode to this that is also airing today as on the Homebrewed Christianity Podcast feed, where Tripp, Sarey, Mason Mennenga and I compete in an Evangelical Fantasy Draft while consuming multiple beverages (and you can even vote on who has the best team!).Homebrewed SYD Launch episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/homebrewed-christianity-podcast/id276269040#episodeGuid=https%3A%2F%2Ftrippfuller.com%2F%3Fp%3D32131soyouredeconstructing.comFollow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Edited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. Church Failure, Church Future (#92)

Dan talks with Tony Jones about the failures of the Emerging Church movement, of which he was a central part, and what’s going on today with churches in America. How might they thrive in the future? Are there any signs that they will make necessary changes? What happens to churches after Covid? Why do gay-affirming people stay in non-affirming churches? What role does church actually play in people’s lives? Why didn’t the Emerging Church leaders pass the baton to the next generation? What is going on today with the “Nones” and “Spiritual but not Religious”? These and many other interesting questions are batted around, and Tony is a very fun interview. The Reverend Hunter: https://reverendhunter.com/Dan’s B4NP Episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-bible-for-normal-people/id1215420422#episodeGuid=f6f74bbc-d7b0-41f1-8a63-45a1946c18e3Resources for faith de/reconstruction: soyouredeconstructing.comFollow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Edited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. Election Special: Persecuted Christians, Mask-less Worship Gatherings & QAnon

...in which in lieu of a new YHP episode, we feature friend of the podcast Jon Ward and his *fantastic* conversation with WORLD Magazine contributors Mindy & Emily Belz. Jon's show notes are below.****Mindy Belz has been with World Magazine since its founding in 1986. It’s a publication aimed at evangelical Christians, started by her brother in law, Joel Belz. Emily Belz, Mindy’s daughter, is also at World now, and has worked at the New York Daily News and The Indianapolis Star.Mindy has spent 20 years covering the plight of Christians in Iraq and Syria. This is a story that truly did get overlooked: before the U.S. invaded Iraq in 2003, there were about 1 million Christians in Iraq, living out a version of the faith with incredibly ancient roots. Many Christians in that region still speak Aramaic, the tongue that Christ himself spoke. But 17 years later, the Christian community in Iraq has been decimated by violence and intimidation. Only about 100,000 Christians remain there. The faith there has almost become extinct in terms of sheer population size. Mindy and I discuss a little bit how much decisions made, or not made, by the Bush administration, are responsible for that. Mindy’s book on this topic, “They Say We are Infidels: On the Run from from ISIS With Persecuted Christians in the Middle East,” came out in 2015. I recommend it. The suffering of this community there, and in Syria, is tough to comprehend. I first thought of interviewing Mindy when I saw her tweet something last May. It was in response to protests against COVID restrictions. "For 6 yrs I've reported on Christians chased from their homes & churches by ISIS, seen their testimony, steadiness, care for one another. How utterly disheartening to watch the American church come apart in a 10-wk shutdown. They shall be known by their demand for their rights,” she wrote. Mindy’s bigger critique of American Christians is two fold: they have no idea what real religious persecution looks like is one part of it. But she also notes the narrowness of demanding rights to do whatever one wants while disregarding the impact of not wearing masks and distancing on those who are most vulnerable — which is not just the older but also people who are poor and on the margins, those without health insurance who are going to avoid going to the doctor or ER if they get sick until it’s too late. And she contrasts this with a vision of the common good that characterizes Middle East Christians...****Jon also brings this into conversation with the recent spate of mask-free and non-distanced worship gatherings led most prominently by Sean Feucht. The Long Game Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-long-game/id1248994688Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. The Christian Movie Industry (#86)

I spoke with Luke Barnett and Vince Masciale, the guys behind the new indy comedy Faith Based, about a pair of misfit buddies who try and make a quick buck by directing a Christian movie and selling it to the fictitious “Christflix” streaming channel. To make their own film, they did quite a bit of market research around the Christian movie industry, so naturally I was interested to talk about that. We also get into other forms of independent faith-based art like the Christian ska and punk scene of the 90’s and 2000’s. Hell & Universalism in a Global Context (#84)

When Dr. Greg Cootsona (California State University, Chico) heard a recent episode that touched on the questions of Hell and Universal Salvation, he emailed me almost immediately and mentioned that something was lacking in our treatment of that topic: other religions and perspectives of the span of geography and time. This is especially relevant because doctrines about the afterlife tend to make a lot of claims about people outside the membership of Christianity. Naturally, I invited him back on the show to talk at length about this topic, and indeed we did talk *at length* because it is such a fascinating topic. Habit, Virtue, Prayer & Science (#83)

Bradley Wright is a Protestant professor of sociology at the University of Connecticut where he studies American Christianity, spirituality, and well-being. Sofia Corozza is a Catholic phd student at Cambridge studying child neurodevelopment. Also, she is Brad’s goddaughter, which makes for a lovely interplay between the two of them. So why care about habits and virtue? Aren’t these old fashioned notions? Well, habits are very closely linked to positive change of all sorts, and if there is one thing missing at least in our *public* life these days, virtue might top that list. Prayer seems to interact with both of these concepts regularly, and I am always asking: what is the science behind each of these? What do we know and with how much confidence?Sofia’s Blog: https://www.patheos.com/blogs/synapsesofthesoul/Bradley’s Site: http://bradleywrightphd.com/Follow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Edited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. Who Are the "Spiritual But Not Religious"? (#82)

If you spend any significant time reading or listening to scholars of religion, looking at polling of religious groups, or anything like that, then you have probably heard the term Spiritual But Not Religious thrown out there. This will usually come with a sentence or two of description, something like, people who do not identify with any particular religion, or people who are neither religious nor atheist. But I wanted to go further and better understand this group, not least because many of this show’s listeners find themselves in this category. Another fact often included when the Spiritual but not Religious are mentioned is that they are the fastest growing religious group in America; yet another reason to take a longer peek under the hood.I’m joined by returning guest Terry Shoemaker, who is a researcher and professor of religious studies at Arizona State University. About a year ago he was on the show talking about what he calls culture war Christianity, and there’s a link to that episode in the show notes today if you didn't catch it.In addition to discussing the SBNR, we also talk about the possible future effects of both the pandemic and evangelical support for Trump on American religion.Terry’s episode from last year: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/to-escape-culture-war-christianity-16/id1448000113?i=1000434412065The Myth of Disenchantment - https://www.amazon.com/Myth-Disenchantment-Magic-Modernity-Sciences-ebook/dp/B0727LKR8CLosing Our Religion - https://www.amazon.com/Losing-Our-Religion-Unaffiliated-Children-ebook/dp/B010VIKQ0E/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=losing+our+religion&qid=1600044922&s=books&sr=1-1The End of White Christian America - https://www.amazon.com/End-White-Christian-America/dp/[email protected] by Scott CangemiJoin the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. Pastors, Therapist Referrals & Mental Health in the Church (#81)

Short interviews with three pastors in different traditions (Foursquare, Episcopal, and Presbyterian-PCA) about their process of referring congregants to therapists in their area. This is a topic that it seems to me could use some more attention, not least because pastors are in a *perfect* position to help Christians of all stripes get the mental health help that they need when they need it, and most of us will need this kind of help at some point in our lives (whether or not we take that step). We talk about referral practices, finding trustworthy therapists, finding therapists who understand where Christian clients are coming from, pitfalls and possibilities within the church around mental health, a little about some of these pastors’ own therapeutic experiences, and more.Dr. Doug Bursch / Fairly Spiritual: https://www.fairlyspiritual.org/Kira Austin-Young: https://twitter.com/kmaustinyoungJon Haralson / Grace Church Seattle: https://graceseattle.org/Follow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Edited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. Somewhat opposed morally, given how they function in human/religious affairsWe also talk about the phenomena of increased “possession” in non-Western countries, culture-bound mental health syndromes, the role of expectation in experience, some (I think) helpful concepts from psychologist Richard Beck, and more.Reviving Old Scratch: https://www.amazon.com/Reviving-Old-Scratch-Doubters-Disenchanted/dp/150640135XThe Slavery of Death: https://www.amazon.com/Slavery-Death-Richard-Beck/dp/1620327775Culture-Bound Syndromes: https://sacwellness.com/culture-bound-syndromes/Myron: https://www.twu.ca/profile/myron-pennerFollow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Edited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. Short-term Missions & Amy Peterson's Story (#79)

This is a wonderful and wide-ranging conversation with the author of one of my favorite books I’ve read in a long time. We talk about Amy Peterson’s missionary story and the Christian soil in which she was raised before turning our gaze to the topic of short-term missions more broadly.Dangerous Territory: https://smile.amazon.com/Dangerous-Territory-Misguided-Quest-World-ebook/dp/B01MRCB54Y/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=amy+peterson+books&qid=1598121703&sr=8-4Where Goodness Still Grows: https://smile.amazon.com/Where-Goodness-Still-Grows-Reclaiming/dp/0785225668/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=amy+peterson+books&qid=1598121703&sr=8-1Follow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Edited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. End Times Popularity: Part 2 (#78)

End Times Popularity: Part 2 (#78) Part 2 of a series that addresses the question “Why was End Times/Left Behind/Rapture theology *so popular* by the time we grew up in the 90s and 2000s?” Please start with Part 1, last week’s episode. My main argument:1. The people whose evangelizing kicked off the Jesus Movement were primarily fundamentalists and they were themselves already very focused on biblical prophecy2. In the early 70s, there was enough global chaos and uncertainty, along with one very important “fulfilled prophecy” that made it seem plausible that the world might indeed be coming to a close3. By the time Left Behind came around in the 90s, that same Jesus Movement generation held the primary places of power and influence in Evangelical circlesCovered in this episode:- The Jesus Movement generation were the ones with cultural power in the Evangelical world by the time Left Behind came out- A straightforward and literal reading of the Bible is always popular, especially in America, and it plays into a few common American characteristics- Where are they now? All four interviewees relay their current beliefs about the End Times- Sally answers some of the questions the original interview subjects answered in the End Times Anxiety series Learn more about your ad choices. End Times Popularity: Part 1 (#77)

Earlier this year, I released a 4-part series called End Times Anxiety, chronicling mental health and related challenges of younger folks who had been adversely affected by Left Behind and similar visions of the Rapture and end of the world within conservative Protestant theology and culture. Throughout working on that project, I found myself continually asking myself and others, “Why did they buy it in the first place? How did this thinking become *so popular*?” These two episodes are my attempt at answering that question, pulling from my own review of the available academic research as well as four interviews I conducted with Baby Boomers who had been a part of the Jesus Movement in the 1970s. My main argument is as follows:1. By the time Left Behind came around in the 90s, that same Jesus Movement generation held the primary places of power and influence in Evangelical circlesThis is not an exhaustive explanation, but it has helped me come up with a basic framework that helps me make sense of my 90s Left Behind-soaked experience. When Spiritual Heroes are Sexual Predators (Jean Vanier) (#76)

Many of you heard the news about Jean Vanier, founder of L’Arche International and one of my own lifetime spiritual heroes, when it came to light in February that he had sexually abused multiple women under his care as their spiritual director. This was not like Harvey Weinstein -- Vanier was a world-renowned spiritual leader and thinker; he was on his way to sainthood. Jennifer Kelly (former director of L’Arche Seattle, local assistant to Vanier) and my friend Chris Hoke (Underground Ministries) help me unpack this complicated situation.L’Arche International findings article: https://www.larche.org/news/-/asset_publisher/mQsRZspJMdBy/content/inquiry-statement-test?_101_INSTANCE_mQsRZspJMdBy_redirect=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.larche.org%2Fnews%3Fp_p_id%3D101_INSTANCE_mQsRZspJMdBy%26p_p_lifecycle%3D0%26p_p_state%3Dnormal%26p_p_mode%3Dview%26p_p_col_id%3Dcolumn-1%26p_p_col_count%3D1Principles of Discernment - http://blog.adw.org/2018/01/six-principles-discernment/Jesuit Restorative Justice Initiative - http://www.jrji.org/index.htmlUnderground Ministries - https://undergroundministries.org/Edited by Scott CangemiJoin the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. I Don't Believe in that God: Hawk Nelson's Jon Steingard (#75)

Jon Steingard, singer of Contemporary Christian rock band Hawk Nelson, made quite a splash in some Christian circles a couple months back when he announced that he was no longer a Christian and did not believe in God. I was able to talk at least with Jon about his own process, as well as where the two of us actually agree, and where we ultimately differ on God’s existence and attributes. We got into inerrancy, certainty, open theism and the problem of evil and suffering, along with plenty more.BadChristian Interview with John: http://www.badchristian.com/bc_podcast/hawk-nelsons-no-longer-believes-in-god/Karen Armstrong’s A History of God: https://smile.amazon.com/History-God-000-Year-Judaism-Christianity/dp/0345384563/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=a+history+of+god&qid=1595800422&sr=8-1Steingard Creative: http://www.steingardcreative.com/Follow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Edited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. Conspiracy Theories, Evangelicals, Media & More (#74)

This week, we have a pretty wide-ranging conversation with Yahoo News reporter Jon Ward. Eventually, we get around to my initial goal of talking about conspiracy theories and Evangelical subculture, but along the way we also talk about:- vaccines and anti-vax movement- confederate monuments- voter suppression- free speech- partisan media- public discourse- political psychology- his charismatic Protestant upbringing- and more! Jon is one of my favorite journalists working today. His podcast The Long Game has focused on the role of institutions in our public life, and recently he has focused more on conspiracy theories and free speech. The Long Game Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-long-game/id1248994688Jon’s Yahoo! profile: https://www.yahoo.com/author/jon-ward/D.L. Testimonies (#73)

We hear four stories of white Christians coming to see the reality of systemic racial injustice in American society: a Republican corporate attorney and member of the Federalist Society, a pastor’s kid whose sisters work with refugees (one of whom married an African man), a nurse confronting disparities in medical care, and a mother thinking through her own history and wanting to give her daughter something better. To acknowledge the problem of systemic racial injustice is not the same as to endorse some particular lens through which to view it (like Critical Race Theory) nor some particular policy over another (like reparations, affirmative action, or implicit bias training). This episode is about the process of coming to an awareness of these injustices.Follow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Edited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast. LGBTQ, Hell, Science & Scripture in Youth Work (#71)

What are the big questions that high schoolers and young adults are asking in their faith communities? I asked Josh Patterson, co-host of the (Re)Thinking Faith Podcast, about his own experience as a youth and young adult pastor at the uniquely multi-cultural and theologically centrist Seneca Creek Community Church in Gaithersburg, MD. LGBTQ issues, Hell, Science, Scriptural questions, the problem of evil and more are discussed. The Quagmire of Modern Missions (#70)

I interview Jim and Breanna Randall, missionaries (if you want to call them that) in Myanmar. What Comes After a Racial Awakening? (#69)

One thing that I am really encouraged by amidst all the protest and civil unrest is how many white people seem to have genuinely woken up to the presence of systemic racism in American society. But what comes AFTER that moment, specifically from a faith perspective? In terms of theology, prayer, church, and seeing ourselves as part of God’s story more broadly, what might be some next steps, ripple effects, etc? I’m joined by Jason Davison and Sarah Lane Ritchie to think and talk through this question.Jason Davison “The Father’s Plea”: http://www.rainieravenuechurch.org/sermons/the-fathers-plea/Jason Davison “Once For All” (sermon starts around 40 minutes in): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Kdf43NcPi4Follow Dan on IG: https://www.instagram.com/dancoke/Edited by Josh Gilbert ([email protected] -- he is accepting more work!)Join the Patreon for exclusive episodes (and more) every month: patreon.com/dankochEmail about the "sliding scale" for the Patreon: [email protected] Patron-only FB group: https://tinyurl.com/ycvbbf98Website: youhavepermissionpod.comJoin Dan's email list: dankochwords.comArtwork by http://sprungle.co/ Hosted on Acast.
