Is experience potentially a direct pathway to the God of the universe? Or is it simply “the heart [being] deceitful above all things”? This topic was recommended by my guest Dustin Kensrue (singer/songwriter of the band Thrice, former worship director at Mars Hill Church in Seattle), and I jumped at it. Darwin’s theory of evolution by common descent is so widely agreed upon by scientists that it is either the best explanation we have for the origins of life on this planet, or else it is a massive conspiracy involving millions of people. It is also, according to some Christians, a dangerous theory that undercuts basic claims of Christianity. Sometimes these Christians, working through organizations that promote Young Earth Creationism or Intelligent Design, spread misconceptions about Darwin’s theory, either mistakenly or on purpose. Jim Stump, philosopher and Vice President of Biologos, counters these misconceptions with data and scientific explanations. Can silent meditation be prayer? Is prayer always in some sense bodily and physical, or is it only a spiritual thing? When did prayer first enter the story of humanity — millions of years ago, or only after verbal language? Did Neanderthals pray? Is it worth looking into the prayer practices of other religions, and if we do, what might we learn? Did God really command the complete slaughter of everyone living in the Promised Land (men, women and children)? One of the most divisive questions in the modern church is whether or not biological sex plays a role in who should be allowed to preach (and there are other issues wrapped up in this one, like whether women should be primary bread-winners, etc). Egalitarians say, “No, let the women preach!” Complementarians say, “Yes, men only; that is how God set things up.” In this episode, we hear from Dan’s Godmother Barb Clark, who is an elder in an Egalitarian church, but has some nagging concerns about the whole thing. Seattle's own Dr. Tina Shermer Sellers (psychologist and sex therapist) joins Dan for a fascinating conversation about what is known as Purity Culture, that near-ubiquitous set of sexual-moral claims and practices that ruled the Evangelical zeitgeist in the 80s, 90s and 00s, and is still today probably the default sexual understanding of most American Protestants. Richard Beck is a psychologist, professor, speaker and author of many books, right in what I consider to be the sweet spot: the overlap of psychology and Christian faith/theology. There is a kind of “religious humidity” in some parts of our country, such that the dominant form of Evangelicalism puts a kind of constant and uniform pressure on anyone who lives there. This affects what happens to people who leave their religious communities, either altogether or who leave to join different communities. Dr. Terry Shoemaker has done some very interesting research with some of these people, especially those who were in some way traumatized by either their original community, or through the process of leaving. This is a tricky one, especially for those who have a genuine desire to take the Bible seriously. The argument for inclusion that J. R. Daniel Kirk presents, however, is one that I find convincing, and it is the best one of the many that I have read or heard (including by Matthew Vines, Gene Robinson, and others). Richard Hay's compassionate argument against affirmation is also presented. Many podcasts on this topic tend to focus on the emotional aspect of the issue, on the increased risk of suicide among queer teens, etc. I think those have their place, but for many Christians, we simply NEED a good argument about what to do with this stubborn text -- the Bible -- that really does seem to stand against homosexual activity. John Chau was a 26 year old American missionary who managed to get himself smuggled to North Sentinel Island, an island in the Bay of Bengal, between India and Mayanmar, home of somewhere between 20 and 200 members of a completely unreached people group. He was killed back in November, by the islanders' spears thrown from a distance. His story is not unique in the history of Christian missions, but it brings important questions back to the surface of Christian worldwide dialogue. Many Christians have been taught that in order to truly submit to God's sovereignty and God's word, it is necessary to believe that God predetermines who will go to Heaven, and who will to Hell, before they are born. Dr. Don Thorsen (Azusa Pacific University) argues that this is a false dichotomy, and that in fact, most Christians over time have not held the doctrine of predestination, commonly known in Calvinist circles by it's acrostic "TULIP". Astrophysicists discover new planets almost daily; might there be intelligent life on one of these planets? Even if not, the number of planets that must exist universe-wide is probably in the billions, or higher. Given God's creativity, it seems plausible, even likely, that there are other species somewhere in the universe who can communicate with their Creator.
