Still Christian & Way Humble About It! (#253)
Dan spoke with friend and frequent guest Sarey Martin Concepcion about the intersection of intellectual humility and our Christian faith journeys, attempting to tie this together with his recent set of “Still Christian” episodes. They discussed how Sarey was raised in a fundamentalist evangelical strain of Christianity that valued certainty and correct doctrinal beliefs above all else. This made it challenging to embrace intellectual humility -- acknowledging what one can and cannot be confident about. While appreciating the research around intellectual humility can create some real tensions within Christianity, it also provides a foundation for extending grace to ourselves and others amid disagreement and uncertainty. https://www.tidycocreative.com/ Other Intellectual Humility Episodes: Elizabeth Hall: Doubt, Intellectual Humility & Uncertainty Tolerance (#146) https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/you-have-permission/id1448000113?i=1000553166878 Joshua Hook: Intellectual Humility (#184) https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/you-have-permission/id1448000113?i=1000608179436 Daryl van Tongeren: You Are Not Your Beliefs (#195) https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/you-have-permission/id1448000113?i=1000618349369 Stephen Sandage: What Does a Healthy Spiritual Leader Even Look Like? How Do Violent & Unhealthy Men Change? (#251)
Dan's guest today is Simon Nixon, a former pastor and licensed counselor in Australia who works predominantly with domestic violence offenders in group therapy settings, helping them understand how to change their behavior and become safe partners and fathers. They discuss the challenges of such work, including the emotional difficulty and the need for a non-judgmental approach to facilitate change. Simon and Dan explore the concept of toxic and non-toxic masculinities and the importance of helping men identify and process their emotions. Simon outlines the process of working with these men, which includes identifying the kind of man they want to be, challenging unhelpful beliefs, and providing tools and strategies for managing anger and other emotions. They also touch on the evolutionary aspects of masculine traits and how some of these traits, such as protection and provision, may have been adaptive in the past but can be problematic in modern society. Dan offers a framework for re-evaluating some classically masculine traits in a more adaptive way. Trump 2024 Anxiety, Part 2 (#250)
Speaking as much to himself as to listeners, Dan continues this series by recapping Part 1, then discussing two more common thinking errors, known in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as “cognitive distortions,” that he sees in news coverage around the possibility of a Donald Trump victory in 2024. Recognizing these distortions in the media as well as our own thoughts about the election and its results can 1) reduce our anxiety and 2) align our thoughts more fully with the reality that the future is uncertain but unlikely to be as catastrophic as we often assume. More episodes should come and will focus on additional cognitive distortions, as well as acceptance work. **Watch this episode on YouTube** https://youtu.be/Ixh-be0_l5A ____________________ Follow Dan on IG: www.instagram.com/dancoke/ Or Twitter: twitter.com/DanKoch Faith deconstruction resources: www.soyouredeconstructing.com/ Edited by Josh Gilbert (joshgilbertmedia.com -- he is accepting more work!) A Pastor Walks Out of The Church and Into The Woods (#249)
Our very own Tony Jones (Generation Gap Culture Hour episodes, author, theologian, recovering youth ministry wunderkind) joins Dan for a very special conversation about the release of his brand new book, The God of Wild Places. Their conversation follows a three-act structure: Tony's early ministry days, then his escape into hunting while his marriage and life were crumbling, and finally the re-approaching and rethinking of his theology and faith in light of those experiences. Along the way, they also touch on mid-century mainline Protestantism, the spirituality and ritual of indigenous hunting practices, and the costs and benefits of organized religion versus a more "disorganized" spirituality. This is not one you'll want to miss, especially if you enjoy Tony on the GGCH episodes. In this wide-ranging conversation with Dr. Malinda Berry (Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary), Dan and Malinda cover nonviolence in the Anabaptist tradition, where Anabaptism comes from, the questionable emphasis in these traditions on martyrdom stories, our psychological instincts toward “purity,” and even exposure therapy and the idea that “time heals all wounds.” Malinda’s Faculty page: https://www.ambs.edu/employees/malinda-elizabeth-berry/ Richard Foster's Book “The Streams of Living Water: Celebrating the Great Traditions of Christian Faith”: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=streams+of+living+water+richard+foster&hvadid=587486551675&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9019667&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=1310001887124060575&hvtargid=kwd-377313966157&hydadcr=22599_13379366&tag=googhydr-20&ref=pd_sl_6v26802mcy_e ____________________ Follow Dan on IG: www.instagram.com/dancoke/ Or Twitter: twitter.com/DanKoch Faith deconstruction resources: www.soyouredeconstructing.com/ Edited by Josh Gilbert (joshgilbertmedia.com -- he is accepting more work!) Do We Need the Resurrection, the Creeds, or Miracles? (#239)

People Are Different And That Makes Us Anxious (#238)
Dan welcomes back Dr. Steven Sandage and Sarey Martin Concepcion to talk about the natural anxiety produced by the reality of differences between people, especially differences between entire cultures. It is possible to cultivate “cultural humility,” a respectful and curious posture necessary for proper care in many fields, including all types of healthcare. Cultural humility is labor and attention-intensive, requiring emotional reserves that can sometimes be provided through spiritual resources. Incentive structures for both individuals and institutions are often, however, set in opposite to the cultivation of such humility. Masculinity: Protecting the Vulnerable? (#237)
In this latest episode focused on masculinity and unique modern problems facing men and boys, Dan talks with moderate evangelical radio host Brant Hansen about his book from a couple years back, which focuses on an alternative vision of masculinity that is nonetheless rooted in mainstream Christian understandings of gender. They discuss bell curve distributions of traits, biological differences between statistically average members of each biological sex, and Brant’s primary thesis that masculinity is about protecting the vulnerable and cultivating goodness for individuals within one’s own sphere of influence. Looking for Meaning in "I Think You Should Leave" (#233)
Is there deep meaning to be found in absurdist comedy? Can shows like I Think You Should Leave prompt us into deep waters, or do they merely trigger shallow laughter and enjoyment? Horror, Exorcisms & the Fear of God (#232)
Does interaction with scary media "open us up to spiritual influence?" What do professional exorcists think that exorcism is actually "doing" for the possessed? Is there a legitimate role for "the fear of the Lord"? What are the benefits of telling and re-telling horrifying stories? Trump 2024 Anxiety (#231)
Speaking as much to himself as to listeners, Dan goes through three common thinking errors, known in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as “cognitive distortions,” that he sees in news coverage around the possibility of a Donald Trump victory in 2024. ___________________________________________ Follow Dan on IG: www.instagram.com/dancoke/ Or Twitter: twitter.com/DanKoch Faith deconstruction resources: www.soyouredeconstructing.com/ Edited by Josh Gilbert (joshgilbertmedia.com -- he is accepting more work!) Good News! The Bible Disagrees With Itself (#228)
As Dan has wrestled with his understanding of the Bible over the years, one issue has taken center stage in his mind: the multivocality of Scripture. In other words: if we take the Bible as we find it, it becomes clear that voices of biblical writers are in disagreement and conversation with each other, across and even within books of the Bible. And, it turns out, many listeners are also curious about this topic. So what better focus for this conversation with New Testament scholar James F. McGrath. They get fairly nerdy and deep into biblical scholarship on this one, so fair warning! Hell is a Psychological Construct (#224)
Derek Kubilus, a Methodist minister, was surprised to find so much pain around the concept of Hell among his parishioners despite serving in a progressive denomination. This led him to write the new book “Holy Hell: A Case against Eternal Damnation” and to explore the concept and history of “Hell” without the baggage it is often accompanied by in more conservative spaces. Over time, humans seem to have come up with a maximally terrifying vision of Hell that goes well beyond anything in the Bible. Why? What role does it play? What does it accomplish? GGCH: Is there a Masculinity Crisis? (Patreon Preview)
Good times were had by all at this live-at-Theology-Beer-Camp special edition of the Generation Gap Culture Hour, the recurring Patreon-feed show where Dan is joined by Tony Jones and Josh Gilbert. Organized on the fly after Jars of Clay’s Dan Haseltine failed to arrive at camp, Dan put the question to Josh and Tony: Is there a “masculinity crisis” as has been reported in some corners of the media? If so, what constitutes this crisis? The best part of the episode, all three agree, was when the audience started getting involved (much of which is only available to Patreon subscribers, sorry!). Worries About "Humanistic" Christianity (#220)
Jed Payne (Church and Other Drugs Podcast) is back to continue the series of “Worries About…” episodes, this time on Jed’s concern that progressive Christianity might be too “humanistic” and not serious enough about human depravity. As always with Jed, it’s a great and incredibly candid conversation with a lot of much-appreciated vulnerability, especially on Jed’s end. Israel & "End Times": A Full Treatment (#219)
After Dan’s solo mini episode on Israel-Hamas and the “End Times” (as conceived of by Left Behind-style premillennial dispensationalist Protestants), he wanted to go further in-depth on the background of that particular theology and reading of apocalyptic texts within the Bible. Dan Hummel (University of Wisconsin Madison) was gracious enough to join on short notice, and the two cover the history of dispensationalism, alternate readings of key texts in Revelation and Daniel, how dispensationalism became so popular, and the prediction track record of the carious popularizers of this view (spoiler alert: it’s BAD). What Even is Existentialism? (#218)
Aaron Simmons is back! This time, we are not talking so much about Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard, but rather in more general terms about the philosophical movement he began: existentialism. Or anyway, he kicked off modern European Existentialism. Since Tripp Fuller and I are gearing up for our “Live Before You Die: Existentialism in Psychology and Theology” online class, I wanted to talk with a philosopher about the original existentialist movement(s) to give all of us some context. I love this stuff, and Aaron is always a fantastic guest. End Times Popularity: Part 2 (#78) (Re-broadcast)
Given recent events in Israel and Palestine, it is inevitable that Christians focused on the Rapture and a Left-Behind-style view of the “End Times” will begin to draw explicit connections between this war and the so-called “signs of Christ’s return.” Dan is planning at least one more episode on this topic, but in the meanwhile, these two episodes, featuring conversations with four Baby Boomers who lived through the Jesus Movement, ask the question, “Why was this End Times view so popular among this group?” Understanding their situation in the 70s and 80s can help us get a handle on the larger picture. *Re-broadcast* - End Times Popularity: Part 2 (#78) Original Description: Part 2 of a series that addresses the question, “Why was End Times/Left Behind/Rapture theology *so popular* by the time we grew up in the 90s and 2000s?” Please start with Part 1, last week’s episode. My main argument: 1. The people whose evangelizing kicked off the Jesus Movement were primarily fundamentalists and they were themselves already very focused on biblical prophecy2. In the early 70s, there was enough global chaos and uncertainty, along with one very important “fulfilled prophecy” that made it seem plausible that the world might indeed be coming to a close3. By the time Left Behind came around in the 90s, that same Jesus Movement generation held the primary places of power and influence in Evangelical circles Covered in this episode:- The Jesus Movement generation were the ones with cultural power in the Evangelical world by the time Left Behind came out- A straightforward and literal reading of the Bible is always popular, especially in America, and it plays into a few common American characteristics- Where are they now? All four interviewees relay their current beliefs about the End Times- Sally answers some of the questions the original interview subjects answered in the End Times Anxiety series. End Times Popularity: Part 1 (#77) (Re-broadcast)
*Re-broadcast* - End Times Popularity: Part 1 (#77) Original Description: Earlier this year, I released a 4-part series called End Times Anxiety, chronicling mental health and related challenges of younger folks who had been adversely affected by Left Behind and similar visions of the Rapture and end of the world within conservative Protestant theology and culture. Throughout working on that project, I found myself continually asking myself and others, “Why did they buy it in the first place? How did this thinking become *so popular*?” These two episodes are my attempt at answering that question, pulling from my own review of the available academic research as well as four interviews I conducted with Baby Boomers who had been a part of the Jesus Movement in the 1970s. My main argument is as follows:1. By the time Left Behind came around in the 90s, that same Jesus Movement generation held the primary places of power and influence in Evangelical circlesThis is not an exhaustive explanation, but it has helped me come up with a basic framework that helps me make sense of my 90s Left Behind-soaked experience. Hopefully, it might be helpful for you as well! Rediscovering Spirituality in Sobriety (#217)
Dan's old college friend and country artist Sam Outlaw (born Sam Morgan) joins to talk about the role of his faith/spirituality in recovering from alcohol use disorder. Along the way, they discuss authoritative vs. nurturant parenting styles, messages they received about alcohol growing up Evangelical, some of the benefits of that upbringing, and the awkwardness inherent in many parachurch organizations. Dan also brings in some of the peer-reviewed research on 12-step programs and the role of spirituality in abstinence from drinking. http://www.samoutlaw.com/ “Ghost Town” by Sam Outlaw: https://open.spotify.com/track/3VyaFDf706JddMz27syc2P?si=4dc0ef61630d4f45 _____________ Sign up for Tripp and Dan's class, “Live Before You Die: Existentialism in Theology & Psychology”: exploringexistentialism.com _____________ Register for Theology Beer Camp: Theologybeer.camp Use code: YHPGODPOD at checkout for $25 off! _____________ Follow Dan on IG: www.instagram.com/dancoke/ Or Twitter: twitter.com/DanKoch Faith deconstruction resources: www.soyouredeconstructing.com/ Edited by Josh Gilbert (joshgilbertmedia.com -- he is accepting more work!) Is it Deconstruction, or Running Away? (#215)
Matthias Roberts joins me again! Previously we talked about healing from sexual shame; this week, he builds a bridge from that conversation to his new book Holy Runaways. After coming to terms (more or less) with sexuality issues, Matthias found that he and many of his friends were still unsure what to do with the whole “faith” thing. Is Christianity Inherently Toxic? (#210)
Earlier this summer, some mild controversy around a video released by Pete Enns (Bible/Faith for Normal People) brought up some interesting questions. First, if someone has experienced a particularly “toxic” version of Christianity, how equipped are they to speak about the larger Christian tradition? Second, is all Christianity inherently “toxic” (and how do we define “toxic”)?
