The Rams walked into Indy with a purpose: avoiding a 1-3 record and getting back on track. They seemingly did that with ease throughout the entire first half, but the second half was a completely different story. The combination of Anthony Richardson and Shane Steichen's new offense was overwhelming for the Rams late in this game, but a few missed FG's may have led Sean McVay to be more aggressive with his play-calling down the stretch. The Rams are faced with another difficult task: a second-straight road game against an AFC opponent that is playing really good football. Under new head coach Shane Steichen, this Colts team is nearly unrecognizable. Anthony Richardson should be healthy enough to start, and their offense is full of well-designed plays and really good situational play-calling. Their defense is playing way above what people expected of them and have plenty of veteran presence to show for. The Rams lost on MNF to the 0-2 Bengals mainly because of self-inflicted wounds. They were 1-11 on 3rd down, 0-3 in the Red Zone, and became more and more one-dimensional as the game progressed. Sean McVay seemingly called a game that went against the Rams' core offseason principle: which was keeping his QB1 upright, and protected throughout the entirety of the season. Finally, the Super Bowl 56 rematch we've all been waiting for. I think if it were up to Joe Burrow, he would have this game pushed back on the schedule after re-aggravating his calf against the Baltimore Ravens late in the fourth quarter of a 27-24 loss. In parallels of Joe Burrow's calf, the new-look Rams are poised (as 2pt underdogs currently) to go into Cincinnati and come home with a win. A continuation of what we've seen on offense (a true marriage of the run/pass, legitimate/effective blocking schemes in the run game, improved pass-pro, etc.) and continuous pressure upfront should be a recipe for a win. The Rams have now lost 9 straight regular season games to the 49ers. But this one was different, as we mentioned on the preview episode. We believed that to be true because of the Rams' much improved offensive line, the unbelievable introduction Puka Nacua has made to the league, and the young, talented defensive players we have that are currently starved to stay on the field. We left this game thinking about how well the Rams' offense executed on third down, how well they protected Stafford (before the 49ers adjusted their front), and why there should be a ton of optimism amongst Rams fans for the next 3 seasons. The Rams' record against the 49ers over the last 4+ seasons doesn't tell the full story. This season, a brand-new opportunity awaits for the Rams to put their handful of regular season losses to the 49ers behind them. It's the very first time we're getting to see Brock Purdy stand back in the pocket with Aaron Donald creeping down on him, with a healthy Matthew Stafford and fully rejuvenated offensive line protecting him. The Rams seemed like they were on a legitimate mission at Lumen Field yesterday. They made the opening game vs. Seattle personal, and used all of the outside noise as motivation to prove the talking heads (and remainder of the league) wrong. Their defense absolutely dismantled Seattle in the second half, and their offense throughout the whole game progressively got more efficient. We were also able to see the relationships grow in real-time between Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua and Tutu Atwell. The Rams' second preseason game against the Raiders is in the books, and there are some key takeaways on both sides of the ball that we made sure to note within this episode. We've been identifying the players who could be contributors to the 2023 regular season, and a handful of them are starting to shine in recent joint practices/preseason games. The Rams are in a little bit of a down period right now for roughly the next three weeks as they start preparing internally for training camp. The Rams have so many difficult decisions coming up, as it pertains to the 53-man roster that has to be finalized by August 29th. While there's plenty of time, between mini-camp (happening this week), additional practice/joint sessions + pre-season, it's never too early to start determining who's not going to make the cut. The Rams have been working through their new plan and getting to know plenty of new faces over the past 2-3 weeks with OTA's beginning on the 22nd of May. It's interesting to hear their approach, how challenging it is to onboard a multitude of players, and the updates we're getting from OTA's (which are always overwhelmingly positive). From there, we wanted to look past the month of June/July and evaluate which 3 players we believe are poised for a much larger role (leadership role) in 2023. The Rams' 2023 season feels like a gamble in its own. They're going to roster a boat load of rookies/undrafted free agents and expect their players who've been in the system for 2-3 years to step up significantly. Vegas only has the Rams listed as favorites in 5 of their 17 games regular season games, and two of them are against the Cardinals. But what about the following: Rams to make the Playoffs? The Rams' 2023 schedule was released yesterday, and it's considered to be somewhat difficult after the Rams finished in 3rd place in the NFC West last season. 4 of their first 5 matchups are against playoff teams and are only slated to play in two prime time games, which is the same amount as: Carolina, Tampa, Cleveland and Tennessee. We took the time to go through each opponent, inclusive of their performance in 2022, how they've managed so far in free agency/the 2023 draft, and their expected win/loss totals. The Rams' 2023 draft class will certainly be one to remember -- even if it's just for the fact that they made a total of 11 picks on Day 3. With a total of 14 picks after trading back four times and trading up once, the Rams came away with some really good value in later rounds, and definitely opted towards finding foundational players/building the roster inside to outside vs. risking top picks on skill players (like they have done in the past). We'll have to see how some of these players look once they're on the field with Aaron Donald, Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp, but we have a lot of confidence in their methodology for this draft specifically, and believe a handful of these players will be legitimate contributors in the very near future. Allen Robinson was traded earlier this week and the Rams will take on a majority of his salary for next year and only a 7th-round pick swap in return. It's considered to be a really bad free agent signing (OTC calls it one of the worst) and then, a day later, we find out Jalen Ramsey would've re-structured his deal with the Rams (per a deleted tweet of his). Additionally, with the 2023 NFL Draft only a week away, we dug into the big board and produced TWO mock drafts, one of which is called "Shiny Toy" (heavily focused on offensive skill players early) and the other is "Future Core", which is focused on building a sustainable roster with talent at multiple positions (moving away from the top-heavy methodology). There is absolutely nothing wrong with being overly prepared, flooding your big board with talent and drafting players that can help mold the state of your franchise for the next 4+ years. The Rams' front office has been very forthcoming of the Rams' recent transactions. Les Snead addressed the Rams' media team 3 weeks ago to lay out the blueprint for 2023-2025, and Kevin Demoff followed up over the weekend with a letter to all Rams fans, addressing the recent departures, the organizations mentality over the past 6+ years, and their willingness to fight for long-term, sustainable success after winning a Super Bowl in their home stadium. Some believe it's admirable and trust the organizations decision-making, and others are overly cautious of what's to come. Jalen Ramsey has finally been traded after 3 weeks of drama for a 3rd round pick and Hunter Long, as the Rams prepare for their roster re-model in 2024-2025. Ramsey won't be the last of their moves prior to the league year beginning -- look for players like Tyler Higbee and Allen Robinson to be either traded or released in the coming days as the Rams need to create roughly $10M in cap space before Wednesday of this week. De-funking the Matthew Stafford trade rumors with a Les Snead press conference was exactly what us Rams fans needed to hear today. Not only was Matthew Stafford the center of Michael Lombardi's discussion on the Pat McAfee show this morning, but he was claiming that the Rams themselves were reaching out to see if they could trade Stafford. While Snead proved that to be true, he mentioned there are many teams around the league calling them to see what their plan is with their roster. Allen Robinson and Leonard Floyd were given permission to seek trades, as of this morning. Leonard Floyd was also told if a trade can't be made prior to the league year, the Rams will be releasing him to save on the 2023 cap. Although the salary cap increased over the past year, the Rams have some immensely difficult decisions to make: across free agency, and across their own roster BEFORE the league year begins on March 15th. The Rams narrowed in on Nick Caley from New England, where he has 7 years of experience coaching TE's, FB's, and will act as an assistant to Sean McVay (which is similar to how Sean rose to be a top head coaching candidate). They're also looking at adding John Benton, who has coached in the NFL for over 20 years, and actually started his professional coaching career with the St. Louis Rams, coaching guys like Orlando Pace and Kyle Turley. Years later, he could be coming back to the Rams. The Rams’ coordinator search is continuing – as plenty of moves around the league are being made. We have our eyes on Raheem Morris’ next potential move, as he seems to be one of the favorites for the Colts’ HC position. Ejiro Evero is another name we’ve continued to watch, as he continues to be requested for interviews as a head coach. Outside of that, the Rams have to fill their special teams coordinator role, as well as their offensive line coach – which are two jobs that are going to matter immensely down the stretch. We also took some time to recap the AFC & NFC Championships, as we sat back and enjoyed the pain that San Francisco (and their fans) had to endure in Philadelphia. There is a ton of speculation circulating around Mike LaFleur, the former Jets offensive coordinator, potentially joining the Rams' staff. Because it seems so likely (and the perfect match overall), we dug into what our offense may look like after installing some of LaFleur & Shanahan's philosophies. On the defensive side of the ball, we explore what the world might look like if Raheem Morris becomes the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, while Ejiro Evero comes back to Los Angeles and joins forces (again) with Sean McVay, but in the DC role. The Rams' re-tooling process has already begun, with general manager Les Snead addressing some of the big vacancies that the Rams will inevitably have on the staff, as well as on the actual roster. Outside of recapping all of the divisional games, we addressed the pain the Rams' players & coaches must be feeling after watching SF go back to another conference championship game, while everyone is watching from home. The Rams can find a few UFA's, re-sign a few key players, bulk-up the depth on the offensive line and be right back in the driver's seat in no time... it just has to happen. Wildcard Weekend is almost wrapped up - kicked off with a full weekend recap on the 5 games that were played across Saturday & Sunday. Then, we dug into Sean McVay and the really interesting decisions he has to make when it comes to his coaching staff, whether it pertains to current staff members like Zac Robinson and Thomas Brown, or outside candidates to fill the offensive coordinator role, like Mike LaFleur, Frank Reich, Brian Johnson, Scott Turner & others. Additionally, if Raheem Morris leaves to become a head coach, that will leave a second coordinator job up for the grabs, and a few familiar faces may be in play. After a very confusing 48 hours or so -- Rams fans were at peace when we heard the news that Sean McVay would be coming back as the Rams' head coach. He made this announcement 24 hours AFTER permitting his assistants to seek other job opportunities, and is now working to replace the members that he is (pre-emptively) going to lose. Additionally, we look into potential replacements at Offensive Coordinator with Liam Coen on the run back to Kentucky with names like Frank Reich, Mike LaFleur and Kliff Kingsbury, and replacements at Defensive Coordinator if Raheem Morris is poached by a different team to be the head coach. The Rams fell 19-16 to the Seattle Seahawks in Seattle, ending their season with a 5-12 record and a TON of questions heading into the offseason. While a lot of younger players certainly stepped up in hopes to be along for the ride next year (Quentin Lake, Russ Yeast, Ernest Brown, etc.), there are a handful of veterans who have a very uncertain future. Aaron Donald, in particular, seems to be the one player who's linked to the core that still seems very undecided about playing next year. In the coach's room, Sean McVay and the Rams have a massive decision to make about Sean's future with the team. He's dealt with adversities in his personal life along with in his career that has led to a very exhausting existence. All in all - we want to know McVay isn't completely burnt out and is capable of coming back to coach. But first, he'll take a very long and well-deserved vacation to think it all through. Rams vs. Seahawks is always a must-watch game. There always seems to be SOMETHING on the line, even if one of the two teams are completely eliminated from playoff contention. This one is particularly interesting, because the Rams can simultaneously do the following things with a victory in Seattle: keep the Seahawks OUT of the playoffs, and potentially send Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions to the playoffs IF they're able to take down the Packers in Green Bay. Eyes will be focused on players named Bobby Wagner, Jalen Ramsey, Cam Akers, Baker Mayfield, Geno Smith, Kenneth Walker, D.K. Metcalf, Tariq Woolen and a handful of others. After a short break, we're back to cover the Rams' 31-10 loss at SoFi Stadium (considered an away game for the Rams), which now brings them to 5-11 on the 2022-2023 season. It's the most losses by a defending Super Bowl champ in NFL history, while the Chargers improve to 10-6. But does it have the same feeling of a normal 5-11 season? To us, the priority at this point is putting together a legitimately competitive group, while still evaluating some of the younger players to see what they're capable of for next year. At the same time, there's still reason to be critical of the schematic side (especially defensively) - and how the Rams' final game of the season can impact the NFC playoff picture. The Rams have to travel to Lambeau Field this upcoming Monday night to play the 5-8 Packers in what's expected to be the Rams' coldest game since 1992. When weather plays a factor and both teams are trending in the wrong direction, what are some of the elements that help propel you to a victory? Smart coaching, winning at the line of scrimmage, a solid commitment to the run game and a little bit of what we saw with Jared Goff in 2017 & 2018 (schematically). Keep the gameplan simplified, capitalize on where the Packers are weak defensively, and bring them down into the depth of no postseason with us. The Rams defeated the Raiders in dramatic fashion in SoFi Stadium last night, 17-16. It wasn't only Baker Mayfield's debut... but it was his debut after getting claimed 48 hours prior by Sean McVay and the Rams. In miraculous fashion (and after only putting up 3 points in the first half) the Rams' offense began clicking halfway through the fourth quarter and the Raheem Morris' defense simultaneously decided to play the best form of complementary football possible - while only allowing 67 yards in total in the second half. In one of the more thrilling games we've seen all season, it was the Rams who came away on top - and it was equality in part due to Josh McDaniels' coaching style down the stretch.
