Jesus continues to make the connection between our money and our hearts with this parable in Luke chapter 16 verses 1 to 15. The shrewd manager leverages the resources he has available to him to invest into his future home, and is commended by his master. What can the church learn from this? Jesus, in his sermon on the mount, makes it very clear that we will store up treasure somewhere. The act of storing treasure isn’t condemned, but we should pay close attention to the location in which the treasure is stored. Jesus makes a concise statement of “where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” So the question is, as Christians, where are we storing up our treasure? On earth? or in Heaven? It’s gotta be one or the other.

In a world where sex outside of marriage was expected for all men, the early Christian ethic of sex only between a husband and a wife was counter-cultural. The early disciples also saw sexuality as an equal gift and responsibility to both husbands and wives. The needs of women were never taken into consideration like this before. Early disciples saw sex, not just as a physical activity, but a spiritual one as well.

Building on the foundation laid in the Old Testament, the early Christians took seriously the call to take care of the poor and the marginalized and alien in their midst. There was an end to Job's suffering. And the scripture says he was more blessed in the latter part of his life than before. Does that mean we, too, will experience greater earthly blessings after our suffering? No. But for those who remain faithful to Jesus, we are promised that our suffering will end one day. And we, too, will be richly blessed beyond measure. What Job got in this life…we are promised to get in the next. So don’t quit!

The only thing worse than bad things happening to good people is when good things happen to bad people. Does it ever feel like the wicked are never punished? Like everything works out in their favor? Job made the same observation. Does that mean it’s better to be bad?

As Job continues to sit in his suffering, he understands one thing for sure: God is all powerful. There is no doubt in Job's mind that God is above him and can do anything he pleases and no one can stop him. However, there is one issue that Job seems to struggle with: Is God good? Does He care for the people He created? Does He listen to their cries? Is He willing to respond to their hurts? The answer to that for Job seems to be "no." At the end of this chapter, Job seems to think the solution would be a mediator in between him and God...

Throughout the story of Job, we are given access not only to what is going on in the earthly realm, we are also given behind the scenes access to what is going on in the heavenly realms regarding Job’s suffering. In this first chapter we see Job endure some of the greatest of all suffering and respond to it in the most unexpected way...

One of the things that we often do whenever reading an account of the events in scripture is to imagine ourselves in the story. Looking for someone in the text that represents us, we can find someone that we can see ourselves in. All of us wonder at times if our prayers do any good. James is convinced that the heart of God can be moved by the prayers of faithful people.
