There was an end to Job's suffering. And the scripture says he was more blessed in the latter part of his life than before. Does that mean we, too, will experience greater earthly blessings after our suffering? No. But for those who remain faithful to Jesus, we are promised that our suffering will end one day. And we, too, will be richly blessed beyond measure. What Job got in this life…we are promised to get in the next. So don’t quit!

The only thing worse than bad things happening to good people is when good things happen to bad people. Does it ever feel like the wicked are never punished? Like everything works out in their favor? Job made the same observation. Does that mean it’s better to be bad?

As Job continues to sit in his suffering, he understands one thing for sure: God is all powerful. There is no doubt in Job's mind that God is above him and can do anything he pleases and no one can stop him. However, there is one issue that Job seems to struggle with: Is God good? Does He care for the people He created? Does He listen to their cries? Is He willing to respond to their hurts? The answer to that for Job seems to be "no." At the end of this chapter, Job seems to think the solution would be a mediator in between him and God...

Throughout the story of Job, we are given access not only to what is going on in the earthly realm, we are also given behind the scenes access to what is going on in the heavenly realms regarding Job’s suffering. In this first chapter we see Job endure some of the greatest of all suffering and respond to it in the most unexpected way...

One of the things that we often do whenever reading an account of the events in scripture is to imagine ourselves in the story. Looking for someone in the text that represents us, we can find someone that we can see ourselves in. However, if you are looking for yourself in the Easter story, you don’t have to look any further than Barabbas.

All of us wonder at times if our prayers do any good. James is convinced that the heart of God can be moved by the prayers of faithful people. Sick people can actually be made well, sinners can be forgiven, and prayer with confession can result in healing. The same God who answered Elijah’s prayer is eager to answer ours.

Life is hard, especially if you are trying to live for Jesus. Paul made it clear to the people he pastored, “We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God.” James calls us to be patient, because the coming of the Lord is near. However, it's not just about being patient, it's about perseverance, because there is no salvation without perseverance.

On your tombstone there is a birth date and a death date and the rest of your life is a dash in-between. James teaches us that dash goes fast…our life is but a midst. Our time here is short. Which means we don’t have time to waste. Which is why wasting any opportunity to do good is a sin. It doesn’t matter what you believe if that belief doesn’t impact what you do. Biblical faith is not simply attesting to a set of doctrinal truths, it is living your life in the light of the doctrinal truths. True faith is always displayed through actions. And if you have no actions, then your faith is as good as dead.

We live in a world where prejudice is rampant. From the way one speaks, to the color of one's hair, the neighborhood they live in, the shape of one's body, and to the color of one's skin. However, it should not be that way among the people of God. We have been given a very specific command from God, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Your big neighbor, your black neighbor, your rich neighbor, your ugly neighbor, your Republican neighbor, your homeless neighbor, and even your pastor neighbor. In the end, we are not going to be judge, we are going to be judged. The way we judge now will impact how we are judged then.

There are three forces that lead us into temptation: The Devil, the world, and our flesh. James clarifies that God cannot and will not tempt us, our temptations come when we "are dragged away by [our] own evil desire and enticed."

How can we consider it "pure joy" when we face trials? It's not that the trials are joyful, but rather it's what the trials produce that we should take joy in. Trials test our faith and produce perseverance. Therefore we should be joyful in the perseverance that is produced through trials, which strengthens our faith.

We've all heard of the "New Year New Me" mentality when it comes to New Year's resolutions. This year, instead of starting a diet or workout routine, becoming more productive, or other self focused improvements, maybe we should shift our focus to God and becoming more like Him. If you've already dedicated your life to the Lord, this year could be "New Year, New EVERYONE ELSE" as you focus on sharing the gospel and making more and better disciples of Jesus. Everywhere. Always.

Over the last few weeks as a church, we have been focusing on some parts of the Christmas story that often get skipped, namely the four songs recorded for us in the Christmas story in Luke chapters 1 and 2. Today we will look at a few thoughts about the least known song from the first Christmas, the song of Simeon, a guy who knows what it means to wait.

Zechariah was a priest, and the father of John the Baptist. He and his wife were very old and unable to have children. Then one day the angel Gabriel visits Zechariah to tell him that God has chosen his family to fulfill the final promise of the Old testament, that they would give birth the the "prophet of the power of Elijah" who would declare and pave the way for the Messiah. Because of his doubts, Zechariah was made mute (and possibly deaf as well) until the birth of his son. When Zechariah names him John, his tongue is released, and the response is praise and thanksgiving in the form of Zechariah's Song.

We don't know a lot about Mary, but we do know from the book of Luke that she was highly favored by God. But why was she so "highly favored?" Why did God choose her as the one to birth and raise the Messiah? What made Mary so special? The answers are found in "The Magnificat" also known as "Mary's Song of Praise" in Luke 1:46-55.
