Well, hey, and welcome to the Becoming Better podcast. On this episode, Jason, Josh, and I sit down and talk through Josh's message this last Sunday. If you missed this message, then I want you to stop here and give that a listen, as it will make this conversation make more sense.

Sep 3, 2025

Message | The Danger of Quarreling (2 Timothy 2:14-19)

Paul once again specifically addresses the dangers of quarreling in the church. We all know of people who just like to argue over things that do not promote the work of God, and apparently this was a significant issue in the church in Ephesus. Yet, while we may find it annoying, Paul declares it to be deadly. He says it spreads like gangrene, leads to ungodliness, to a departure of the truth, and destroys faith.

Message | Remember the Gospel (2 Timothy 2:8-13)

This passage of scripture opens with the word “remember," and verse 14 commands Timothy to “keep reminding people of the these things.” What is it that we are to remember and remind people of? The Gospel: The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, and all that we gain from it. It is so glorious that it is worth anything that it costs us…even suffering and death.

Becoming Better | Unafraid (2 Timothy 1:6-14)

Nate is back! On this week's episode, Nate, Josh, and Corey sit down to talk about Sunday's message, the projects they've yet to complete, and what it means to suffer as a follower of Jesus.

Aug 12, 202543 min

Message | Unafraid (2 Timothy 1:6-14)

As Paul launches into the final letter he would write to Timothy, he begins with a word of encouragement. He reminds Timothy of his calling…and he reminds Timothy of his giftedness…and lastly he reminds Timothy of the Spirit that God has given him.And then Paul invites Timothy into his suffering. Suffering that is worth it because of the grace of God that was given through Jesus. Suffering isn’t something to be ashamed of because we serve a savior who suffered.Paul told Timothy not to be ashamed because Paul was in prison. And to be willing to join him in his suffering. And Timothy would suffer. Hebrews 13:23 indicates Timothy was eventually put in prison himself.

Becoming Better | Generational Faith (2 Timothy 1:1-5)

On this episode, Josh, David, and Ken sit down to talk about family, faith, and legacy.

Aug 5, 202546 min

Message | Generational Faith (2 Timothy 1:1-5)

God’s plan from the beginning was that faith was to be passed down from generation to generation. The old testament is filled with commands to share with your children the great things God has done. In Malachi 2:15, God says the reason God takes 2 and makes them 1 in marriage is so that they will produce Godly offspring. Both Paul and Timothy come from faith filled families. Paul was a Jewish man who’s ancestors served God faithfully. Timothy faith came from his mother and grandmother. His life was changed by their faithfulness.

Message | Flee sin, pursue righteousness (1 Timothy 6:11-16)

As Paul wraps up his letter to Timothy, Paul gives him a charge. To flee from the sins that entraps so many pastors, the pursuit of money. And encourages him to instead pursue righteousness, godliness and the like.It isn’t enough for us to flee something…we also have to pursue something.Paul implores him to fight the good fight of faith. Keeping faith is a fight. Apparently Paul doesn’t believe it will just happen. But it is something that must be fought for. He also places the onus on Timothy to “take hold of the eternal life” that comes with the good confession of faith. It is clear that Paul does not assume that one can just coast to the finish line of faith but you must persevere to the end.a

Becoming Better | Chasing the Dollar (1 Timothy 6:2-20)

On today's episode, Josh, Corey, and Kellan sit down and they discuss Glenn's Message that he gave this last Sunday on 1 Timothy 6:2-20. Jul 15, 2025

Message | Chasing the Dollar (1 Timothy 6:2-20)

We have all heard the verse: “for the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil." However, most don’t know the context of that verse. It is found in the middle of a conversation about those who try to leverage gospel ministry for financial gain. Paul declares that it is godliness with contentment that we should be striving for.

Jul 8, 2025

Message | A Word to Slaves AND Masters! (1 Timothy 6:1-2)

Paul ends the book of 1 Timothy by giving instructions to those who are slaves. Slavery was a common part of life in the Roman Empire and Ephesus would have been no exception. What makes this text interesting is that there are no corresponding instructions to the masters in the church (at least in 1 Timothy). However, Paul does instruct a master in the church in a letter to Philemon.

Becoming Better | A Word Concerning Elders (1 Timothy 5:17-25)

On this episode, Josh, Joe, and I sit down to discuss last Sunday's message. We also dive into what we're doing for the 4th of July. If you haven't listened to last Sunday's message, I encourage you to pause here and give it a listen, as it will help make this conversation more sense to you.

Jul 1, 2025

Message | A Word Concerning Elders (1 Timothy 5:17-25)

The letter of 1 Timothy was written by the Apostle Paul to a young pastor named Timothy to help him understand how the church would operate. It makes perfect sense that Paul would address the expectations that come with being a pastor (also known as an elder, shepherd, and overseer). There are some benefits, such as being paid for your work: Paul makes it clear that the one who’s job is preaching and teaching should be compensated. Accusations against the pastor are to be corroborated before they are to be believed. However, when a pastor is found to have sinned, he is to be reproved in public.

Becoming Better | What about young widows?

On this episode, Josh, David, and Nate talk through Grant's message on the young widows and what the church is called to do for them. If you haven't listened to last Sunday's message, then I want to encourage you to stop here and give that a listen, as it will help make this conversation make more sense to you. We hope you enjoy this conversation.

Jun 24, 2025

Message | What about young widows?

In a world were the life expectancy at birth was 25-30 years, and making it to 40-50-60 was less than 30%, it isn’t surprising that Paul felt the need to address younger widows. It is like that there were many young woman who lost their husbands at a relatively young age. But, as we saw in the text last week, not all widows are equal. There are different expectations for widows depending on their circumstances. So what does Paul have to say about the younger widows?

Jun 23, 2025

Becoming Better | A word about widows

Well, hey, and welcome to the Become Better podcast. My name is Nate, and I am so glad you are here. On today's episode, Josh David and I talk about the widows in the church and what we are called to do. We also answer a few questions. We hope you enjoy this conversation.

Jun 17, 2025

Message | A word about widows

In our text, Paul reinforces the idea of church family by telling Timothy to treat those in the church as fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters. Paul then goes into great detail establishing the responsibility of the church in helping the widows among the people of God.

Becoming Better | Train Yourself! (1 Timothy 4:6-10)

Well, hey, and welcome to the Becoming Better Podcast. On today's episode, Ken, Josh, and I sit down and talk about last Sunday's message. If you haven't listened to last Sunday's episode, then I want to encourage you to stop here and listen to that, as it will help make this conversation make more sense to you. We hope you enjoy this conversation.Discipleship group questions to ask this week.“What do you suppose people might think we are ‘training for’ just by watching our life this week?”“Paul uses the language of sweat and struggle: ‘we labor and strive.’ We often think of that as a call for all believers—but what are some quiet, behind-the-scenes ways that pastors in our church labor and strive that many of us might not even see?”“If we had eyes to really see the weight our pastors carry, how might we respond differently? What are some simple, meaningful ways the rest of us can help lift that load?”

Jun 3, 2025

Message | Train Yourself! (1 Timothy 4:6-10)

Paul lays down an expectation for Timothy that applies to us all, we are to train ourselves to be Godly. What does training for Godliness look like? What specifically are we supposed to do?

Well, we hope you enjoy this conversation.

May 28, 2025

Message | ARE WE FOLLOWING DEMONS?

Paul declares that lies from demons will not only be taught by hypocrites, but that people will abandon the faith and follow those deceiving spirits. Paul gives specific examples of some of the things that false teachers were teaching in the first century church in Ephesus. The question we need to ask ourselves is: what are false teachers teaching that would cause people to abandon the faith in the church today?

May 20, 2025

Message | Godliness Springs from the Gospel (1 Timothy 3:14-16)

So far, the purpose of Paul's letter to Timothy has been to teach people how they are supposed to act in the Church. This letter is like a practical ministry class for Timothy. Yet, right here in the middle of it, Paul gives us an early Christian hymn or creed. This is a declaration of the Gospel, and the mystery of godliness flows from it.

Paul has made it clear that woman are not to be the authority figures in the church. So who is called to lead? The obvious answer is men, but can it be just any man? Absolutely not, there is a high expectation for those who would even be considered to lead the church.

Paul claims that we should pray for all people. He even goes so far as to command prayer for the Emperor himself. Imagine having a temple in your town for the man who is putting people like you to death, and you are told to pray FOR that person…not against them! That was Ephesus!

Paul saw leadership potential in Timothy from an early age and Paul took him along as his partner in Ministry, where he quickly became Paul's most trusted ministry partner. Eventually Paul called Timothy to pastor the church in Ephesus, where he did so faithfully for decades.
