Message | ARE WE FOLLOWING DEMONS?

Paul declares that lies from demons will not only be taught by hypocrites, but that people will abandon the faith and follow those deceiving spirits. Paul gives specific examples of some of the things that false teachers were teaching in the first century church in Ephesus. The question we need to ask ourselves is: what are false teachers teaching that would cause people to abandon the faith in the church today?

Message | Godliness Springs from the Gospel (1 Timothy 3:14-16)

So far, the purpose of Paul's letter to Timothy has been to teach people how they are supposed to act in the Church. This letter is like a practical ministry class for Timothy. Yet, right here in the middle of it, Paul gives us an early Christian hymn or creed. This is a declaration of the Gospel, and the mystery of godliness flows from it.

Message | Who Should Lead the Church?

Paul has made it clear that woman are not to be the authority figures in the church. So who is called to lead? The obvious answer is men, but can it be just any man? Absolutely not, there is a high expectation for those who would even be considered to lead the church.

Message | What is a Woman's Role in the Church?

In this text we will address one of the most controversial issues in the modern church: a woman’s role in the church. Paul explicitly says they must be silent. Is that really what it means? Does this expectation still apply today?

Paul claims that we should pray for all people. He even goes so far as to command prayer for the Emperor himself. Imagine having a temple in your town for the man who is putting people like you to death, and you are told to pray FOR that person…not against them! That was Ephesus!

As the disciples are walking seven miles from Jerusalem to Emmaus, Jesus goes through their bible, from the books of Moses through the Prophets (what we would call the Old Testament) and explains to them what the scriptures said about himself. There is no doubt: this is the greatest sermon we have never heard.

Paul encourages Timothy to refute those who have departed from a sincere faith and have turned to meaningless talk. These people are focused on things that don’t matter, like myths, genealogies, and controversial speculations, rather than focusing on what matters most, namelyfaith.

Message | Introducing Timothy

Outside of Paul himself, no one has more Bible writing credits in the New Testament than Timothy. Paul saw leadership potential in Timothy from an early age and Paul took him along as his partner in Ministry, where he quickly became Paul's most trusted ministry partner. Eventually Paul called Timothy to pastor the church in Ephesus, where he did so faithfully for decades.

Message | Husbands and Wives

Paul, writing to a local body of believers in Ephesus writes, “submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.”This command isn’t written just to the women, or even to the wives, it is written to the church. Our general disposition toward one another should be one of submission. With that general understanding in mind, Paul moves specifically to speaking to wives and husbands. What he has to say to those in Ephesus would have been a brand new way of thinking, especially for the men.

Message | Among You...Not Even a HINT!

We live in a culture where we are surrounded by people tolerating and celebrating sin. That is not acceptable among the people of God. When someone walks among believers, there should be a palpable difference in what they see, hear, and experience. The question this text makes us ask is: does the standard of holiness among us meet the standard God sets for his people?

Message | Walking in the Way of Love

For most of us, we read texts like this as a checklist of "do’s" and "don’ts." And rightly so! These verses clearly lay out for us in very specific terms how we are to act towards one another. However, we should not see these texts as exhaustive lists of how to act. Instead, they are examples of what it looks like to live out the command of chapter 5 verse 1: following God’s example and walking in love.

Message | A New You?

When you think about your life, is there a difference between your actions and attitudes before you knew Jesus and after? Not just a change in beliefs, but a change in behaviors? As Paul is speaking to these gentile Ephesians, he implores them to turn away from the way they used to live. Paul makes it clear that to live like the “gentiles” is incongruent with following Jesus.

Message | Grow Up Church!

If you are in Christ, you have been given a spiritual gift meant to be used with and for the body of Christ. The big idea of these verses is that the body is made up of many parts, but they are designed to work together. The goal of Paul's exhortation here is that the body would be unified and mature. In the western church, we often see church as an event we attend, instead of a body to which we belong. In a body, every part is important. If one part hurts, the whole body is affected. If one part is missing, the body doesn’t function as it was designed. Do we see the church, and our role in it, with that kind of importance?

Jan 14, 2025

Message | Live Worthy

As is often the case in Paul's letters, the first half of the letter is a reminder of the gospel. It is a retelling of who we were before Christ, and who we are in Christ. As we enter into chapter 4, the letter now takes a turn. Paul begins to move from theological to practical. He shifts from reminding us of what Christ has done, to what we should do because of what Christ has done.

Message | Resolve to Love

This is a new command, as the original command to love was to love your neighbor as yourself…the golden rule. Jesus elevates that expectation for us to love each other as He has loved us! Jesus commands us to do this because it doesn’t come naturally! Romantic love or parental love tends to come naturally, but to love people with a Christ like love, does not come on its own.

Message | Mystery Solved (Ephesians 3:1-13)

In this section of text, Paul speaks of a mystery that was revealed to him for the sake of the gentiles. A mystery in the New Testament is typically something that was once hidden but has now been made known. What has been made known? The gentiles have been given the same standing as the Jews in the family of God.

In Paul's day the world was divided up in two groups, Jews and gentiles. The two did not mix, there was hostility between them. The Jews believed they were the ones who had received all the blessing of being God’s people…the gentiles had been left without hope. But God’s design from the beginning was to take the two and make them one…and he did so through the blood of Christ.
